Hatem Ben Arfa today became Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew's first signing after his season-long loan move became permanent.

The 23-year-old Frenchman has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal after the Magpies agreed an undisclosed fee with Marseille.

Ben Arfa has been out of action since suffering a double leg fracture in a challenge with Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong in October, but showed enough in his four appearances for the club before that to persuade them of his ability.

He said: "I am absolutely delighted to be signing for Newcastle United on a permanent basis. During my short time at the club, I thoroughly enjoyed playing for the team and for the supporters too. This is a great club and I am very happy to be committing my future to them.

"I am getting back to fitness as quickly as I can and am really looking forward to getting back to St James' Park, seeing the lads again and working with Alan Pardew and his staff.

"During my time out, I have been inundated with messages of support from fans and I want to repay them all with good performances on the pitch later this season."

The publication of the UEFA EURO 2012 match schedule was labelled a major step forward, with fans now knowing that the tournament will kick off in Warsaw and finish in Kyiv.

A total of 31 games will be played to decide the next winners of the Henri Delaunay Cup in two years' time – and the Executive Committee's rubber-stamping of the fixture list at its meeting in Minsk, Belarus, today confirmed which cities will stage which matches.
The opening game of UEFA EURO 2012 will take place in the Polish capital Warsaw on Friday 8 June, while Ukraine's leading city Kyiv will be the setting for the final on Sunday 1 July.
Warsaw will also have the honour of hosting a semi-final – on Wednesday 27 June – with Donetsk in Ukraine holding the other last-four encounter the following day.
Warsaw, Gdansk, Donetsk and Kyiv are the chosen venues for the quarter-finals which will run across four days from Thursday 21 June to Sunday 24 June.
Meanwhile, fans of the two host nations will note that Poland play their first two group matches in Warsaw and their third in Wroclaw, while Ukraine kick off in Kyiv before two further group games in Donetsk.
UEFA president Michel Platini welcomed this next step towards the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, telling a news conference in Minsk: "Although a lot of hard work still has to be done, the major decisions ahead of EURO 2012 have now been taken with the approval of this match schedule.

"Practically two years before the final round we are reassured by the work being undertaken in Poland and Ukraine."
Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) president Grigoriy Surkis hailed the ratification of the schedule, saying: "The UEFA Executive Committee has shown patience and tolerance, and these virtues have helped us move a step forward and establish our match calendar.

"The decision taken today shows once again that we have risen to the occasion, and that we are drawing near to the kick-off."
The EURO is being staged in eight cities in the co-host nations - Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw, Wroclaw in Poland, and Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Lviv in Ukraine.

With the host cities now confirmed – Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk in Poland; Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and Donetsk in Ukraine – all eight are taking the opportunity to celebrate in the wake of the unveiling of the tournament's logo, visual identity and slogan in Kyiv on Monday.

Light spectacles
While concerts and firework displays are among the other events planned as each city stages a two-day celebration, the keynote spectacle is the illumination of some of their most famous buildings, under the guidance of Swiss artist Gerry Hofstetter. Hofstetter's previous works included illuminating Antarctic icebergs in support of the United Nations International Year of Water 2003, and a 2006 project in Egypt where he lit up the likes of the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx as a contribution to the UN International Year of the Desert and Desertification.

The new 41,000-capacity Metalist Stadium has opened its doors to hometown club FC Metalist Kharkiv, making it the second arena in Ukraine to be primed for UEFA EURO 2012™ action.

Metalist owner Olexander Yaroslavskiy, who will also co-ordinate Kharkiv's preparations for the tournament, was the chief benefactor behind the refurbishment which has included the installation of a new pitch, an under-soil heating system, an LED scoreboards and an improved roof structure. Metalist have continued to play at the venue during the construction work, the completion of which was marked by the grand opening on 5 December.

'Consolidated effort'
President of the Football Federation of Ukraine, Grigoriy Surkis, was in attendance along with fellow dignitaries such as Ukraine President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. "Kharkiv is second after Donetsk in Ukraine to get an arena which will be hosting EURO 2012 matches," said Surkis. "Thanks to consolidated effort from local business and authorities, Kharkiv citizens will see EURO 2012 matches live."
