In my absence from the internet Google Reader decided to throw in the towel so make sure to follow me on Bloglovin' and I know there hasn't been lots of new content on this blog in a long time but you're in luck because I have several new blog posts in the works that will not only feature summer fashion but also a red, white and blue combo only befitting everyone's favorite July 4th holiday and there might even be sparklers and beach views so make sure to follow me on Bloglovin' so you don't miss out on this and maybe future posts. Phew.

Also, I do the Instagram thing.

Apparently Google decided to do some Spring cleaning and jettison that good ol' Google Reader. If you want to keep following my goings-on, hop over to Bloglovin'. (Like hey, I cut off all my hairs--10 inches to be exact. And, I'm finishing my graduate degree in about six weeks, so back to regular posting finally.) You can see my silly photos on Instagram, too.

The last few weeks have been quite the whirlwind. I began the last semester of my graduate school career. For me, heading back to school in the Fall of 2011 brought so many welcome changes. I've made a new home and friends in Chicago, extended my professional circle, made exciting trips to visit friends in Seattle, Minneapolis, and Madison, spent this past summer in New York City doing my dream museum internship, and adopted two of the best kittens out there (my little Whiskey and Moonshine). I hope only that 2013 and the upcoming end of my school days can deliver the great things I was fortunate to experience in 2011 and 2012. Here are some of my favorite Instagram photos of my 2013 beginnings.
My winter break was full of homemade cocktails, South Asian food, and meandering about Madison, Wisconsin with a special someone. These photos capture just some of the fun times to be had. Perhaps best were 2 am "Pool Dart Sandwiches!" Delicious. What did you do over the winter holidays?

Phew, it has been a while! With the semester finally over I can breathe (slightly). I enjoyed Christmas with my family in Virginia where I finally joined the rest of the world and acquired my first smart phone. They are pretty addictive! Here is a sample of Instagram photos I've shot since I got my phone last week. It's been such a pleasure to play with the different apps and add another "camera" to my knapsack. Sadly, this blog has been neglected since I've been back in school, but I hope with my gadget I'll be able to post more on this blog with the ease of photo-taking these fancy phones offer. You can check out my Instagram adventures here or follow me on your own phone; my username is annie_cullen. I'd love to follow you back.

New Years was a joy this year. It was my second NYE holiday spent in Chicago and I enjoyed some shenanigans (and yes, Instragram-photo-snapping) with friends including drinking too much champagne and dancing to Macklemore's Thrift Shop. I celebrated a 2012 full of wonderful adventures in Chicago, Minneapolis and New York City and toasted to 2013. I hope your evening was also full of enjoyment and bubbly. Happy New Year!

My little kittens are now 5 months old and doing such big things! Playing in tunnels, helping me write graduate school papers... The list just goes on. They're inseparable as the first photo illustrates so well. My babies!

For my second Halloween event of the season I decided to mix things up and try out a new costume and I'm quite pleased with the results! I have this blue dress with ruffly sleeves that I've never found the occasion to wear. Light bulb! A French, Pierrot clown. A little bit of white face make-up later and I'm loving my Halloween costume.

A last minute costume idea. Though I didn't have khaki trousers or a floppy black hat (a black beret and skinny jeans had to suffice), I think I still pulled off a modern incarnation of Annie Hall. And, yes, it confused quite a few folks when I had to explain my name is Annie and my costume is Annie Hall.

Totally out of focus kitten photo that I sort of love. 16 weeks old! (I think you're become a real pet parent when you start referring to your kitten's age in weekly incrementals rather than the more obvious monthly break-down. Soon I'll just start going by days, or seconds!)

While my few months in New York were pretty great, I have had fun summer adventures elsewhere, wrapping up my summer with camping, sailing, and spending time with the family, and all sorts of Chicago shenanigans. (But don't worry, I still have so many New York photos to share. It might take my the entire school year before I get them all up on this blog!)

My odd obsession has yet to cease. On the subway this summer a young gentleman had the most beautiful black and white full sleeve tattoo I have ever seen. I wanted to ask him if I could take a photograph of it, but thought that might seem odd/rude/creepy so I opted not to. I still kind of wish I had.

My birthday is upcoming. I don't think there's any more cliche moment to get your first tat, so that's probably when I should just do it, right? What do we think? (Hi, Dad.)

Also, I've noticed a few things whilst perusing Tumblr for tattoo inspiration:

1. There appears to be a very specific genre of photography most likely called "attractive tattooed-male cuddling kitten."
2. Every third person has a tattoo of a (the exact same) dream catcher.
3. Every fourth person has a tattoo of a bird.
4. Every fifth person has a tattoo of an infinity symbol.

It seems I've recently lost my mind. If my busy graduate school life (full class load, graduate assistantship, internship, side project assisting a faculty member with a community oral history project, and trying to maintain a social life) wasn't enough, I decided to throw in kitty play time, vet visits, and too many hours spent perusing petsmart.com (who knew it could be so much fun?).

When I returned to Chicago from New York mid-August, I realized how badly I wanted a critter companion. With my 20-something lifestyle I knew a dog would be too much, so a kitten felt appropriate. The night before I was set to adopt, I kept myself awake daydreaming of the best cat names and "whiskey" instantly came to mind. When I arrived at the local shelter the next day to find these two rambunctious siblings, one of which was named "Princess Moonshine," I knew it was meant to be. Whiskey and Moonshine? Yes. Both of them had to be mine. I also couldn't bear to break up this brother/sister pair. Now two kitties? Oops.

Though my apartment smells like kitty litter, my plants have taken a beating, and I can't stand cat footprints on my sink basin, the good moments far outweigh the bad. Having friends visit for play time, finding Whiskey trapped inside the kitchen trash bin after having not-so-wisely jumped in, cuddly naps, seeing kittens lounging in the most unlikely of places (e.g. decorative bowls), and all the other trips and falls for which kittens are so well-known/loved make me a proud kitten mama to Whiskey and Moonshine. You can probably expect to see a flood of gratuitous cat photos on TEFD in the future. Just figured I'd warn you now.

Long time no post. I'm sure we've all got our necessary "I went camping this summer" post to ring in the end to the season, so here's mine. I know I'm jumping around a bit (I still have so many photos of New York to share. They're coming!) but thought I'd show you a bit of what I've been up to since arriving safely back in Chicago mid-August. My heart is missing New York wildly but it was lovely to drive out to Wisconsin for a couple days of camping fun with old college friends.

I decided to spare $40 on a SuperSampler this summer, as the first photo shows. I definitely like what it can do, though perhaps don't care for the film I used (a bit too de-saturated for my tastes). Many more of those to follow, too. Where did you camp this summer?

The last of my recent batch of Diana photographs, this time taking us back in time to the May Day holiday I spent in Minneapolis in early May. Read more about my May Day adventures by clicking here.

Some outtakes of my New York adventures. The last was another image I snapped during my East River Ferry adventures. I'm a little bummed it turned out so overexposed, but the skyline and colors sort of remind me of a Monet. And, no, I'm not claiming to be any type of brilliant artist!

I keep my lomography cameras with me at all times in case I feel the itch to snap a photo. Here are some photos in Brooklyn taken throughout my summer. I have really enjoyed being in this uber-hip borough despite the fact that my more affordable location is sometimes not the most convenient for hitting up Greenpoint, Williamsburg, or Bushwick. C'est la vie. I have less than a month left in this fair city, so I hope to get my cameras out as often as possible. The end of my stay here is bittersweet. Being in New York has, at times, made me homesick for Chicago (both for my apartment and my friends). On the other hand, there's so much to see and do and I know I'll miss that and working on the Lower East Side which is definitely my Manhattan neighborhood of choice. Then again, I suppose I'm biased considering I work at an amazing history museum right on Orchard Street. I have photos of the LES to share soon, too!

I managed to snap these photos aboard that bumpy East River Ferry with my Diana Mini. The first, the result of an upside-down double exposure, is by far my favorite. It's the New York skyline. To see more of my East River Ferry adventures click here.

I finally developed my latest roll of Diana film today and here's just one result of the bunch. While I'm bummed several family photos didn't turn out, there are certainly many others I like and plan to share this week. This is my first try with color slide film. Thoughts?

My friend Peter visited me in New York to celebrate his 27th birthday. Though both of us have visited the city numerous times (and I've been here for a month and a half now), we decided to indulge in a bit (well, a LOT and totally exhausting amount of) of sight-seeing during his time here. One of the things we did? Ride the East River Ferry. It provides such an amazing view of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and other parts of New York City unbeknownst to me. But beware! My only other ferry trips have been in Seattle and the San Juan Islands. Over in the Pacific Northwest, they know how to do their ferries right. A nice, gentle stroll to allow maximum time for photo-op opportunities. In New York, perhaps perfectly in sync with the pace of the city, it's a whole other story. That damn ferry is going to get you to your destination STAT. It's true that at times I was afraid the mix of speed, heavy winds, and bumpy surf might toss me into that dirty 'ol river, but we made it to DUMBO alive and well. I snapped a bunch of images with my Diana and SuperSampler film cameras and look forward to sharing those photos once the rolls have been developed. Plus, more photos of my sight-seeing adventures to come.

These photos were snapped with Peter's Canon and 50mm. To visit his blog, click here.

I can't believe it's Independence Day already. I was pleasantly surprised when I realized I have the day off from work! I hope you also enjoy July 4th. I may or may not be ending up BBQ-ing foods on an NYC rooftop. I hope to snap some photos! In the meantime, here's an image I double-exposed from my July 4th festivities in Minneapolis last summer. Sparklers, the Mississippi River, illegal bonfires and all.
