Although we, as humans, tend to think of blessings as positive or good, many times God's blessings are disguised as other than "good" in our eyes. Nevertheless, these blessings I once heard referred to as little kisses from God. Soli Deo Gloria!

Graduation Sentiments and a Senior Board Idea

Our 2nd daughter just graduated from high school. It's a special time but it also comes with a bittersweet feeling that this season of life has come to an end for her. But a new season is about to begin. It seems that's what God has in store for us in this life...new seasons!

We had a senior board to complete before she graduated, but unfortunately, I suffer from a long line of procrastinators. So we waited until the day before to get it done. God was good as He provided ideas we had not even considered before. Since we were excited about the way it turned out, I decided to share a photo.

It's a little different from most senior boards we've seen before, and I think it turned out nicely despite our procrastination.

Here is a photo of most of our family. We were so glad they were able to travel to be with us on this special day.

The senior gal is in the back (to the right) by the tall guy who is known as Dad to our daughters.

Blessings!

Also, I have a friend who knows the Lee Family (Tom and Sherry) of Ashville, Alabama. Here's a link that tells more about their loss. Mr. Lee died when he hovered over his family in protection of them as the tornado ripped through their home on Wednesday.

Please pray for these families and others who have lost so much in Alabama (where I was born, raised, and lived until late last year) and the surrounding states. Thanks for your prayers during this time of loss and pain for so many!

Blessings!

In this chapter of Voices of the True Woman Movement, Joni discusses how God hammers and chisels away at our own selfishness to mold us more into the likeness of his son, Jesus. She states that suffering is the "textbook" that God uses to show us who we truly are, which is not always a pretty sight. Many times, during our suffering and struggles, we respond unbiblically. This is how we able to see what we're made of and know the truth about ourselves.

We do, however, have a part to play in the sanctification process, which takes so much time. Yet resisting what God is trying to accomplish in our hearts by becoming hardened and ignoring the work he is doing in our lives only "prolongs the process." Our Heavenly Father does know what he's doing when he allows pain and suffering to come into our lives. He knows what we need so much more than we do and is "bent on conforming us to the image of His Son." She states, "God cares most, not about making us comfortable, but about teaching us to hate our transgression and to grow up spiritually - to love Him." I think she'd be someone who knows this better than most people would considering the pain and suffering she's endured. Our part to play in this - we can't just read God's Word, we must obey it, starting with the small things in our lives. Changes will come through obedience in the small things.

Joni mentions that we should be thankful for God's sovereignty even when we don't understand why he has allowed certain things to happen in our lives. She goes on to say, "For if He weren't in control, evil would come barreling at us uncontrolled." This is something I had never given much thought to - that evil would completely overtake us if it wasn't for God controlling it.

I'll close with several statements from the end of the chapter. "The simple formula for all of this is found in I John 2:5, where the Scripture says, 'Whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him.' This is how we receive our assurance of being 'in Christ' - by watching what happens when God, the Master jeweler, draws up obedience from the souls of women who otherwise would kick back, rebel, and exert independence. The fruit of the submitted heart is the proof that God is working - and working for our good. He is committed to do good towards you. Just remember that His idea of good is to make you more like Jesus. Both believers and unbelievers deal with ample does of pain, and disappointment. Why not make certain that these ordeals you must face are fraught with meaning and purpose? Why not cooperate with what God is doing in your life - preparing you through difficulty and hardship for His beauty to come shining through? You are being fashioned into a jewel for the crown of your King."

I'm trusting you're recognizing God's little kisses to you today. Even the ones that are hard to swallow, the painful ones that God has allowed to come into our lives, should be seen as blessings. I know that's not always the way I see those things, but if Romans 8:28 is true, I should see them that way. Be encouraged - God has only good things in store for those who love Him and walk in His ways!

Choosing Faith in Seasons of Change

by Karen Loritts

In this chapter of the book, Karen Loritts sheds light on how fear cripples us. When fear is sweeping through our minds, it also brings along its "evil companions" to draw us away from the Lord even more and push us further into despair. When fear is central in our minds, we are unable to focus on the Lord.

Karen discusses how to confront fear biblically. She suggests saturating our minds with God's truths so that we won't be overcome by fear. She mentions focusing on all the great things our Lord has done for His people and knowing He is fully capable of rescuing us from or working out our current situation.

Here are six things Karen recommends doing when fear strikes:

Submit (surrender) to God.

Resist the devil (and he will flee from you).

Draw near to God (through His Word and prayer).

Cleanse your hands.

Purify your heart.

Humble yourself.

Karen's final statement in this chapter: "Let God be God, and fear will eventually bow down to its Conqueror." All we need to do for that to happen is put our focus on God, not our current circumstances.

Blessings to you!

Chapter 5 - A Woman After God's Own Heart

by Janet Parshall

One question Janet Parshall poses to us as Christian women in this chapter is this: "Can you accept His will for your life right now, even if it's not what you want?" I don't know about you but that's a hard question for me to honestly sit and ponder. It's a struggle to answer, knowing my answer is less than godly. Yet Hannah, Samuel's mother in the Bible, had a different answer.

This chapter caused me to see Hannah in a totally different light than I'd seen her in before. I never really stopped to think about the huge sacrifice Hannah made. The courage Hannah had was not of her own human conjuring. For me, the giving up of any of my children would mean immense pain. I'm sure Hannah experienced pain but she had the courage to follow through with the commitment she'd made to the Lord before Samuel was even conceived.

A few quotes from the last portion of this chapter:

Hannah's story teaches us what it means to be a true woman of God. She let go of her own plans. She knew that God was in charge, not her. She believed Him enough to say yes even when desperation had caused her to go out of her comfort zone and ask for the unthinkable.

Motherhood is actually one of God's refining fires. The reality of motherhood is that it's a place to learn surrender, letting go, trusting and believing that God is God.

True women, like Hannah, trust God enough to believe He has great things planned for the babies He has given us - babies we give back to Him for His use, His kingdom, His glory.

These are convicting thoughts which made me consider how God's glory is being shown through my own life. Although Hannah had no idea that her story would last this many generations, she was faithful anyway. We can learn a lot from her courageous acts.

Trusting you're recognizing God's little kisses to you today!

What are my parenting goals as a Christian? To bring up godly girls who love the Lord with all their hearts, souls, minds and strength, not hotties so that all eyes will be on them! Hope this article challenges you to think about all the many choices that are facing us today as parent! May we, as Christian moms, have the courage to make the right decisions for our children, not the popular decisions.

Blessings!
Because of our recent move, I haven't spent much time posting lately but the reason I decided to post this information is because I wanted to share with others what I've discovered about rising early.

Let me back up a minute. I'm not an early riser nor have I ever been. Yet I have desired to be that person who is able to get out of bed, without much trouble, at a time that most would consider early (or at least a reasonable time to wake up) in the morning. I have always been a night owl as is my entire family. Once I go to sleep, I sleep like a baby. Staying up late, however, usually doesn't produce an early riser, which is my goal. Obviously, staying up late and sleeping late isn't always a good thing when it comes to living a productive life. I seem to be learning this the hard way.

At any rate, I began in December looking for online help about sleep patterns, rising early, etc. Although I can't recommend the website as a whole (because I don't know much about this person and his beliefs), what I found here has truly helped me - http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/05/how-to-become-an-early-riser/. Steve Pavlina also has additional links, including Part 2 of that particular post, listed below each post. I read several of his articles on sleep but these two were the most helpful to me.

Many of you may be saying, "What's the big deal? Why do you have such a problem waking up in the morning? Just do it." Well, I began to ponder the same thing myself which is why I began searching for answers. It's not the easiest task for some of us to wake up early, especially if you're a late night person and just can't seem to make yourself (due to a lack of self-discipline) go to bed at a reasonable hour. It's easier said than done! Since I'm one of those people, I needed help. Most articles you find on sleep will tell you to go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time every day. While that may sound easy to some of you, it's not easy for me to go to sleep if I'm not sleepy. So I would stay up until I was sleepy and sleep until I had to get out of bed.

Incredibly eye-opening for me, the information in the article linked above stated this - get up at the same time every day (yes, even on Saturdays and Sundays) but only go to bed when you're sleepy. I had never tried that before so I decided to see how it would work for me. So far, so good. For me, this appears to be working. Steve mentions that if you can stick to this pattern for 30 days, you'll have a good habit formed. Your body will get used to waking up at that set time every day and your internal clock will begin to awaken you at that time each morning.

The proof's in the pudding. For me, I had been doing this for only 4 days and on the fifth day, I woke up 2 minutes before my alarm clock went off. I was in shock! This morning, 22 minutes before the alarm sounded, my internal clock sent me a message that it's time to wake up. I haven't even been doing this for 30 days yet but I can say that it's working for me.

I haven't posted much lately on my blog because we recently moved so life has been chaotic as you can imagine. After being in a new place for a little over a month now, reading this chapter really hit home for me. As you can imagine, based on the title of the chapter - For Such a Time as This, this chapter is about Queen Esther and the time period in which God had placed her. He, being the Sovereign God that He is, had Esther living right at that exact time in history and in that exact place to accomplish His plans and His purposes. Of course, He didn't need her to do that. God could have had someone else accomplish His plans. Yet Esther submitted to what God had in store for her and she was immensely blessed and her people also.

One of the main things that I took away from this chapter is there are always two stories going on when all we see is one. I've never thought about that before but the two separate but integrated stories are:

that which we see happening in this world, which Nancy refers to as the kingdom of man, and

that which we don't see, which Nancy refers to as the view from the Kingdom of God

I found this information very insightful knowing that, being in the world, we have a limited view of what we see happening but God sees all. Nancy goes on to say that there is a "behind the scenes" plot in each story. This would be God's plan underneath what we see going on in the world.

I want to give you a few quotes from this chapter hopefully to encourage you to read the book for yourself.

Whether it was Esther then or you today, only God knows - and only time will tell - why He has sovereignly placed you where you are right now, at this moment in history. (p. 79-80)

Esther, in taking her bold measure of faith, was willing to leave the palace, risking her life in order to save her people. The Lord Jesus, by comparison, actually did leave His heavenly palace, giving up His life in order to save His people. In this way, Esther's story foreshadows the gospel message, even as our lives are intended to point people to the redeeming heart and work of Christ. (p. 81)

You too are a tool in the hand of God, being applied to situations that may just feel like "everyday life" to you but are actually backlit stages where the purposes of God are being put on display from your street address. (p. 81)

Nothing in this world can abort His eternal plan. (p. 83)

Never underestimate the significance and influence of your faith, your prayers, your faithfulness, and your obedience. (p. 83)

Let me finish by reiterating something that Nancy wrote that encouraged me immensely - "The entire story, from first to final chapter, was written by God in eternity past; it is being unfolded in our present day, waiting for its ultimate outworking in eternity future." If we can keep that perspective in the forefronts of our minds, we will be better prepared to carry out God's plans for our lives while on this earth. After all, it's all about Him, not us.

I haven't had much time lately to post on here. We're in the process of moving and have been packing like crazy maniacs to get it all done. I keep asking myself why I/we have collected so much stuff since we moved into this home 11 years ago. Of course, some of it we came here with. And I keep wondering...what is it that makes me want to hang on to all this stuff, especially the stuff that has no sentimental value attached to it? The Bible says that one day it's all going to burn up with the rest of the earth. Also, Jesus told us in Matthew 6:19-21 - "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Pretty convicting stuff! I'm realizing that many times whatever we own actually owns us.

While this is a hectic time for us as a family, God is still good and He's teaching me in and through this process. I'm trying to see the little kisses from God during this process and just making a feeble attempt to trust Him with it all!

A new school year...a new core curriculum. This will be our 7th year to homeschool and I wanted to share a new curriculum I've found. The first year I homeschooled, I began by using only one curriculum for every single subject. That curriculum was great for us when we started out because everything was scheduled. I loved that our school days were scheduled. I didn't have to worry about how to figure everything out by myself. But as children grew older and I ended up with 3 in the mix, I realized I needed to find another curriculum that fit our family's changing needs, my changing ideals about education and provided what I think God has led me to see as a more well-rounded learning experience. Of course, you creative moms out there would probably do this on your own but my brain doesn't work that way. I need help figuring out all the fun and interesting ways to learn.

With our new core curriculum, we'll be integrating several subjects for more continuity of learning. Over the years, I've realized that eclectic, Charlottle Mason homeschooling is what we really enjoy. My thoughts on learning have evolved drastically since day one of homeschooling. Now we use an eclectic mix of resources. I'll try to list what we're using for this school year on my side bar soon. I'm as excited about homeschooling now as I ever have been.
So, the new curriculum we're using is through Heart of Dakota. You can click here, http://www.heartofdakota.com/index.php, to go to the home page. What I love about Heart of Dakota more than anything is the Biblical worldview that's interspersed throughout each program they offer. I'm really looking forward to starting the Creation to Christ program.

If you'd like to read what other homeschooling moms have to say about Heart of Dakota, an HOD blog roll has been started. Click on this link to go there: http://www.rubyslippersschool.com/2010/08/this-could-be-start-of-beautiful.html.

Trusting you're seeing God's little kisses today!

Thanks to Theresa at Being Refined as Silver for sending me the Versatile Blogger Award. You can visit her blog at http://beingrefinedassilver.blogspot.com/. You'll definitely be encouraged!

The rules are easy:

1. Thank the person who gave the award to you.

2. Share 7 random things about yourself.

3: Pass it on.

So here are 7 random things about me - it's a mini bio:

1. I've always lived in Alabama and will be happy to stay here for the rest of my life if that's God's plan.

2. My handsome, gregarious, larger-than-life, fun-loving husband and I only knew each other for 2 months when we got engaged. Six months later we were married.

3. This Saturday will be our 17th anniversary. Happy Anniversary David!

4. We have 3 children, totally by God's hand, yet I was told by a fertility specialist that I would never get pregnant without undergoing in-vitro fertilization.

5. I thought I was saved at the age of 7 but realized when I began seriously reading through the Bible at age 33 that I wasn't truly a Christian. I owe everything to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

6. My family never thought I'd have one child, much less three.

7. Imagine their shock when I decided to homeschool! That was six years ago and we're still plugging along.

*Bonus trivia: I've always been a dog person, not a cat person yet we have two cats now plus almost one dog. She only weighs 3 lbs. I actually do think cats are sweet now. One of our cats, Scout, was the catalyst God used to prompt me to start this blog. You can find that story here, http://littlekissesfromgod.blogspot.com/2010/03/amazing-true-animal-adventure.html , if you're interested.

Of course, Theresa's blog, Being Refined as Silver, has been so encouraging to me. Here are a few more of my favorites:

As I have been pondering over the words I read this morning during my time with the Lord, I felt compelled to share my thoughts. I am currently reading through the Bible chronologically. At the beginning of this year, I made a conscious choice to read the Bible through chronologically so that the bits and pieces of the Bible would fall together in the order that they occurred. For me, that means getting a clearer overall picture of the Bible. If you're interested in reading the Bible through chronologically, there's a chart at this link: http://www.esv.org/assets/pdfs/rp.chronological.pdf.

My friend, Mandie, shared with me recently what God has been impressing upon her heart. We should not meet with the Lord expecting nothing. We should be expectant when we meet with God - expecting Him to do great things in us through the reading of His Word, expecting Him to use His Word for the transformation of our hearts, and expecting Him to bless us through the verses we're reading. We should look for God to show up during our quiet times and anticipate that He will accomplish great things when we read and meditate on His Holy Word. Another thing my sweet friend mentioned is writing down the passages that God is really impressing upon her heart during her quiet time. Later she can go back and be reminded of how the Lord blessed her during that particular meeting with Him.

So this morning, I decided to implement my friend's ideas during my own quiet time. I cannot tell you how blessed I was during this time spent with the Lord. I had 90 minutes alone with God. It was just Him and me and the chirping birds. I felt like I'd received a breath of fresh air once I was finished. I was genuinely renewed in my spirit. To start with, I prayed and asked the Lord to show Himself to me through His Word. He did. Then, I expected to have some special verses revealed to me by the Lord. They were. I wrote down three passages in II Chronicles that really spoke to my heart this morning and I want to share them with you below.

II Chronicles 30:9 - If you return to the Lord, then your brothers and your children will be shown compassion by their captors and will come back to this land, for the Lord your God is gracious and compassionate. He will not turn his face from you if you return to him.

II Chronicles 30:18b-20 - But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, "May the Lord, who is good, pardon everyone who sets his heart on seeking God - the Lord, the God of his fathers - even if he is not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary." And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people.

II Chronicles 31:21 - In everything that he (Hezekiah) undertook in the service of God's temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered.

What did I hear God saying to me this morning? Basically this - He is faithful! Although reading these verses in context would give you a much better picture of how they worked to penetrate my heart, I trust you will be blessed by God's faithfulness which is shown in these passages. The verse that really hits the nail on the head is Hebrews 10:23 - Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. How awesome that Biblical truth is!

I was truly encouraged by my friend sharing with me and so grateful that she did. What a blessing this little bit of information has been to my soul! Thanks, Mandie! Yes, Biblical truths and godly friendships...more blessings to be thankful to the Lord for.

Continuing to look for and recognize little kisses from God every day!

While I desire to give thanks to the Lord for all the many blessings I've received from Him, I also want to be honest. My heart is heavy today so my list is probably shorter than usual. However, although my heart is burdened, I am still grateful, knowing I have the Hope that many don't. I trust that others will find that Hope through the One and Only who can impart it, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. And that this blog will be used to share that with those who need to hear it. To go to my gratitude list for this week, click here: http://littlekissesfromgod.blogspot.com/p/one-thousand-gifts.html.

Blessings to you this week!
