PSAT score reports will be arriving soon, and the information included in these reports will assist you with your SAT planning.

The item-by-item listing your PSAT score report answers -with the level of difficulty noted- will help to identify weaker areas that need your attention. In addition, the percentile rankings included in your report will show how your scores compare with other college-bound students.

Adding a "0" to each of the two digit scores (Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing) will give you an estimated SAT score. Please remember that the SAT also includes an essay.

Current Planned Changes to the SAT Could Affect Today's High School Freshmen: SAT Blog Excerpt:

On February 26, 2013, in an e-mail from its new president David Coleman to its member schools, The College Board announced plans to redesign the SAT to "... better meets the needs of students, schools and colleges..." Many high school students and their families - as well as teachers and tutors, especially those who are involved with test prep - are wondering how these changes will impact test prep and subsequent performance.

One thing we do know at this point is that we don't know much. The College Board has announced few specifics about the planned changes. However...:

Though no release date has been officially announced, the earliest that a revamped SAT would be in the hands of students would be Spring 2015. So the changes could impact today's freshman class. The classes of 2013, 2014 or 2015 will take the same test that is currently in use.
When the SAT was last updated in 2005, the PSAT (which is designed as a "preliminary SAT") changed first. Kaplan rightly points out that it will be interesting to see if the PSAT changes in October 2014 in anticipation of SAT changes coming in Spring 2015.
What are some predictions about the scope of potential changes? The ArborBridge blog hypothesizes that the structure of the SAT could shift from a paper-based to a computer-based format, as the GMAT and others have already done. This could significantly alter how test-takers approach the test.

For example, if the SAT switches to a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format, test-takers will deal with one question at a time - no skipping and going back. And with each correct or incorrect answer, the test "adapts" by making itself more or less difficult. Likewise, current strategies to deal with the increasing difficulty of questions across SAT sections will be outmoded. In the CAT format, each question must be dealt with entirely on its own.

Since the test score requirements for both the SAT and the ACT will be higher, it is even more important to begin your test preparation early.

With this in mind, Individual Dimensions is running at full speed this summer, offering you a myriad of ways to hit the ground running when school starts again.

SAT Subject Tests- Be Prepared

SAT Subject Tests- Demystified

The SAT Subject Tests offer you an additional opportunity to show colleges what you know and what you know you can do. There are 20 Subject Tests.

Many colleges use the SAT Subject Tests for as an admission requirement, for course placement, and to advise students about course selection. Some colleges specify which SAT Subject Tests that they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to take.

Things you should definitely know!:

Students may take up to three SAT Subject Tests on a single test date.

Students cannot take the SAT Subject Tests and the SAT during the same test administration.

Students must indicate which SAT Subject Tests they plan to take when they register for a test. However, they may change which tests they take up to the test date-except for Language with Listening Tests. This applies to center testing only (not school-based testing, which involves student-specific materials that may not be available).

Calculators may be used only on the Mathematics Level 1 and Level 2 SAT Subject Tests. Students may not use calculators for other SAT Subject Tests and must put them away when not taking a mathematics test.

The Language with Listening Tests are always given in the first hour of testing. Only one listening test can be taken per test date.

The SAT Subject Tests offered on each test date are subject to change. The tests offered on each test date will be confirmed prior to opening of test registration for the 2012-2013 school year.

SAT/PSAT Skills for 8th, 9th, and 10th Grade Students

The teachers at Individual Dimensions have created a set of lessons designed for the student who is interested in strengthening skills that will be used not only in future test taking but also in the classroom.

Our experience has taught us that certain types of questions found on the SAT/PSAT may be weaker areas for our students.

SAT, ACT, or Both?

SAT, ACT or Both?

Most of the college-bound students at Individual Dimensions take both the SAT and the ACT. A student should focus on one test at a time since the structure of each test is different. Much of the content of the two tests is similar, but the way in which the questions are presented differs.

Both tests are timed and long (some students say that they both seem to go on FOREVER). The SAT requires more critical thinking, and the ACT requires more speed in answering the questions. There is a penalty for guessing on the SAT, but no such penalty exists on the ACT.

Similarities in content are as follows:

	SAT:		ACT:

	Mathematics		Mathematics (includes higher level content)

	Critical Reading (includes vocabulary and critical thinking)		Reading (includes more passages in a shorter time period)

	Writing (grammar & sentence structure)		English (grammar, sentence structure & mechanics)

Major difference in content: The ACT has ONE additional content area... Science Reasoning.

One of our teachers, Mr. Dick Cahoon, has developed a method for breaking down the Science Reasoning section and making it more direct. His strategies have allowed his students to save time and to be more efficient. Students have greatly improved their scores on this section.

The next SAT testing dates are May 4th and June 1st.

The next ACT testing dates are April 13th and June 8th.

Taking the SSAT: About the Test

Get Ready for the SSAT

What is the SSAT?
The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is a multiple-choice aptitude test for students in grades 5-11. In addition, a new elementary test is now available for students in grades 3 and 4.

The test consists of verbal, quantitative (math) and reading comprehension sections.

The verbal questions test your vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and ability to relate ideas logically. The quantitative (math) questions test your ability to solve problems involving arithmetic, elementary algebra and geometry and concepts. The reading comprehension section tests your ability to understand what you read. All tests are printed in English.

In addition, the test includes a writing sample portion, which asks you to respond to a topic statement. Your essay is not graded, but a copy accompanies each SSAT score report you have sent to a school or consultant.

The SSAT is designed for students in grades 5 through 11 and is administered on two levels:
· Lower (for students currently in grades 5-7)
· Upper (for students currently in grades 8-11)

Yes, through our Test Information Release (TIR) service, but only if you test at a national test center on selected national test dates.

Should I test again?

Many students test twice, once as a junior and again as a senior. You should definitely consider retesting if you had any problems during testing, such as misunderstanding the directions, running out of time, or not feeling well.

You may also want to consider retesting if you don't believe that your scores accurately represent your abilities, especially if you see a discrepancy between your ACT scores and your high school grades, or if you have completed coursework or an intensive review in the subject areas included in the ACT since you tested.

If you test more than once, you determine which set of scores are sent to colleges or scholarship programs. ACT reports scores from only one test date per report.

What is the difference between the ACT and the SAT?

The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities.

The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. The SAT has only 3 components: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test.

The College Board introduced a new version of the SAT in 2005, with a mandatory writing test. ACT continues to offer its well-established test, plus an optional writing test. You take the ACT Writing Test only if required by the college(s) you're applying to.

The SAT has a correction for guessing. That is, they take off for wrong answers. The ACT is scored based on the number of correct answers with no penalty for guessing.

The ACT has an Interest Inventory that allows students to evaluate their interests in various career options.
