They called yesterday with news that authorities had shut down a puppymill in the county. There were a number of beagles and they could use all the help we could provide.

We took 7 females including 2 nursing moms with 8 puppies.

To add some levity to the situation, we decided to name the adults and puppies after board games.

So, we have:

Trivial Pursuit and Parcheesi as the moms. Candyland, Mousetrap, Hi-Ho Cherry-O, Battleship, Yahtzee, Monopoly, Clue, and one other that I can't remember right now.

The other females are: Taboo, Kerplunk, Checkers, Scrabble, and Boggle.

BREW would like to thank the PA State Legislature for passing tough new puppymill laws that give Animal Control autorities more leeway to close these facilities down.

Photos are coming soon.

To donate to BREW to help these puppymill dogs, click here:
<form action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" Salsa likes other dogs but can be quite pushy and not real good about respecting other dog's boundaries feeling absolutely certain that once they get to know her and her good intentions of playing with them that they will accept and forgive her sometimes bossy nature and manipulation of any given situation to get what she wants.

In our home with three resident female beagles and her brother Caesar, (they adore each other) the pecking order and boundary lines have been established and all is well in Salsa's world.

Having said that, if Salsa is to live with another dog, it would be best to be a non-alpha male, a beagle that would be tolerant of her invasion of personal space and her owner beagle experienced in a multiple dog home.

If an only dog, our recommendation would be that her family continue to socialize her to keep her the friendly, tail wagging girl that she is as she matures into adulthood. Salsa did very well at a recent adoption day with multiple dogs around and is very well behaved in our home, comfortable with all visitors (there are many) and celebrates life with a joyous nature.

She's a great girl with tons of personality, a sad _expression on her face that nobody can resist once knowing the abundance of love she wants to share with their family. She's great company and in short, she's got great heart!!!!

Dog Haiku - soooo beagle-y!

Dog Haiku
I love my master.
Thus I perfume myself with
This long-rotten squirrel.
I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be.
Today I sniffed
Many dog behinds - I celebrate
By kissing your face.
I sound the alarm!
Paper boy - come to kill us all -
Look! I am recuperating from the days I was expected to act like a Labrador Retriever and I am rediscovering the joys of being a BEAGLE! What does that mean, you may want to know. Well...

I love a good snuggly cuddle, especially if it is accompanied by a belly rub.

I love to eat!! FOOD! FOOD! more FOOD! And I did a bit too much eating in the past, so I’m rather on the chubby side right now. I eat my dinner at the same time as my foster sisters, but someone needs to be nearby to redirect me back to my bowl. Hey, I just want to sample what the girls are getting!

My sniffer works overtime! I love to take in all the smells everywhere I go. Inside, outside; I’ll put my nose in it.

I really love to chew. My foster lady is impressed that I have only chewed doggie-appropriate items. Rawhide chews are great! I had a brief fling with a stuffed toy when I first got here, but I really like the rawhide chews the best.

I want to be near you... all the time! Oh, I’m not intrusive. Right now, I’m dictating this message from under the desk with the computer on it. I’ll even spend some quiet time in a crate if you’re concerned that I may be in the way. But, PLEASE, keep me close to you!

A few words from Pearce’s foster person: Li’l Pearce is a delight. He has settled into our home without much fuss. He is crated when we are out of the house and occasionally for a naptime during the day. He sleeps through the night in the same room as our resident dogs... he loves being one of the pack.

Pearce does best with girl dogs... with some boys, he tries to dominate. He would also do well as a pampered only pet.

He is a teeny tiny guy... and needs to drop a few pounds to be fit and trim. Pearce is familiar with the concept of leash walks: when he sees the leash, he wags his little bottom furiously! But he does need a refresher course on leash manners: he is distracted by smells and forgets that there is someone at the other end of that leash. He’s also a wanderer... his leash handler needs to stay alert or else be tripped! But, he doesn’t pull and will do his business on lead.

Pearce has more than an idea about housetraining... but he needs more time in our home to earn the housetrained icon. However, he already goes to the back door to be let out... and even woofed to alert me when I wasn’t nearby. Once outside, Pearce promptly does his business.

All in all, Pearce is a cuddly, quiet couch potato searching for his forever family. His needs are small... but the returns-- his adoration and affection-- are huge!

Puppies and more puppies...oh my!

We seem to have puppies coming out of the woodwork.

Ceasar and Salsa remain from the Salad Dressing litter...the puppies from the "false pregnancy" are now 4 weeks old...and the Party puppies are 5-6 weeks old.

If you're interested in a puppy but don't want to go to a breeder, YEAH!!! There's:

Typical tri-color - most common, most requested color. There are faded and shaded tris.

Red & white

Lemon - both when beagles come in lemon and red & white, many folks think he/she's a mix.

Liver - often called a "copper-nosed beagle" by the hunting folks. These beagles frequently have pink noses, gold eyes (really!), and a much more red appearance than a tri.

Dilute - often called a "blue" beagle. The hair is grey, seen as blue from a distance. This color doesn't happen often at all.

When you add ticking to the mix, it gets even more interesting. Ticking is the freckles that appear as black or grey dots on the legs, chest, and belly of a beagle.

Blue-tick - this is a tri-color with ticking

red-tick - a red & white beagle with ticking

There are also pieds and mottled beagles. Then are are black-jackets and 'open' or 'broken' coats. The photo is of an "open tri" beagle.

Whew!

One of the best places to learn more about beagle colors is: http://clubs.akc.org/NBC/beagle_colors.htm.
