Hindu boy, Muslim girl forced to marry thrice in 6 months
The two are now ‘sick and tired’ and have approached the NHRC to allow them to lead a normal life

A boy sees a girl at a social gathering and instantly decides that he should get married to her. After several days of courting, he succeeds in wooing her and proposes to her. The girl is reluctant and hesitant as she is from a different community. Finally, the boy manages to convince her to marry him. This real-life incident being enacted in West Bengal has some trappings of Maniratnam-directed ‘Bombay’ made in 1995. But the comparisons stop at the marriage. But Tarun Modak, an employee of a private shipping company, and Jahanara Khatoon (names changed), have already married three times in six months and now a sword of Damocles hangs over them in the form of a fatwa. The events have taken a bizarre turn and the couple had to marry thrice-- twice only to please the society, relatives and the families. The two went through torrid time, which they would not have bargained for at the time of deciding to get married. They had to willy-nilly kowtow to an adverse fatwa from the community leaders. The young couple had little alternative but to please. Tarun was aware of the sensational wedding between computer graphic designer Rizwanur Rehaman and Priyanka Todi, daughter of a business tycoon, in Kolkata and the media attention it had attracted. He knew the fate Rizwanur met. But, Tarun threw caution to winds as he thought that he was not marrying any prominent person’s daughter. He was shocked beyond his senses by the events that followed his marriage. Khatoon, a primary school teacher from Metiabruz near Watgunge in the southern fringe of Kolkata, first married Tarun in February 2009 under the Special Marriage Act. For a couple of months, the newly wed had a nice time and things were hunky-dory as they lived separately without depending on others. The troubles started when the girl's community came to know about the developments. During Khatoon’s first visit to her parent’s place at Rabindranagar in South 24 Parganas district, she was categorically told by the community leaders that if she declined to marry Modak again as per the laws of Shariat, her husband would be ostracised in the locality and she would not be allowed to stay at her father’s place. “I realised the predicament of my father and naturally, I had to give in,” revealed Khatoon. After a lot of persuasion stretching into a few weeks, Modak agreed to re-marry her under the Shariat law. More drama unfolded thereafter. Tarun’s parents wanted the couple to marry as per the Hindu customs and rituals. When there was little objection from Khatoon, the third marriage of the couple within the six months of their first wedding took place. Modak's parents organised it at the Kalighat temple in the city and were too happy to see their daughter-in-law condescending to wear conch shell bangles and apply vermillion on the forehead like a Hindu woman. However, this did not go well with the girl’s community leaders. They were furious and targeted Khatoon’s father. He was summoned to a community meeting where he was allegedly thrashed and forced to sign on a judicial stamp paper. “Have we or my father committed any crime that we’ve to go through all this?” Khatoon asked. “Can’t we and our family members have a peaceful life? We’ve tried to oblige all their (read community leaders’) wishes. Still, why there is so much persecution of us and my father?” she added in anguish. Khatoon along with her father has already registered a complaint with the local police. Unable to withstand their trauma any longer, the couple has now approached the National Human Rights Commission, pleading they may be allowed to lead a normal life of their own as they are actually ‘sick and tired’ of appeasing the community chiefs. When contacted, a local police officer said that security for the family members has been ensured and efforts have been on to resolve the matter amicably. See a variety of blobs, stars and flashes. Try to make out shapes and see if your subconscious is trying to send you a message (perhaps that funny shape is saying, 'send all your money to urban75.com'?)

See how long you can hold a note
(Amusement Potential: 4-20 minutes)
Not that much fun, but it sure passes the time. Play with a friend, or try to beat your own personal best. Inhale deeply and then try and make a noise for as long as you can. Earn extra points for making your partner laugh or ending on an amusing note.

Try to not think about penguins
(Amusement Potential: 1-5 minutes)
This is especially hard, because by trying too much, you remember what you were trying to avoid thinking of. If you try too little, you end up thinking about penguins anyway.

Make Star Trek door noises
(Amusement Potential: 1-2 minutes)
Stand by an electric door to a bank or something and make that silly "Scccccccchwop" sound heard whenever people popped on to the bridge to hang with Captain Kirk.

Look at something for awhile, shut eyes, study after image
(Amusement Potential: 2-5 minutes)
Another great time waster. It takes about 30 seconds of staring to create an after image, and the image is then viewable for about the same length of time. Fun to combine this one with pushing on your eyes.

Get yourself as nauseated as possible
(Amusement Potential: 5-10 minutes)
Best achieved by looking straight up and spinning around. Try to be so dizzy you can't even stand up. This is also entertaining due to the "makes boredom seem a lot better" effect (see "Hurt Yourself").

Invent a weird twitch
(Amusement Potential: 5-10 minutes)
Adopt a bizarre twitch (e.g. flicking your head irregularly, twitching with eye or busting out sporadic cough noises) and try it out when you go shopping.

Make a low buzzing noise
(Amusement Potential: 15-30 minutes)
Hours of fun in libraries! Keeping a totally straight face and looking nonchalant, make a low pitch humming/buzzing noise and see who reacts.

THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH VERY LITTLE

See what's in your neighbour's rubbish/trash

You can learn a lot about people by what they throw out. You might uncover some dark secret about them. Plus, they might be throwing out something with value that still works, like a VCR or some porn mags.

Very entertaining, but requires discipline. Remember - vulgarities don't make a call funny, but getting the other person to believe a ridiculous story will. Try seeing if you can get them to make noises to 'test' the line. One to get you started off: Call McDonalds with weird complaints about their food.

Pretend all humans will die except for people in room with you
Amusement Potential: 10-20 minutes)
What would you do if this really happened? Would the group stay together, or would there be factions? Who would join what group? Remember, there would only be power for a few days before the plants ran out of fuel or broke. To travel, you would always have to be near cars to siphon gas out of. Best to do with people you know.

Step off a curb with eyes shut, imagine it's a cliff
(Amusement Potential: 2-5 minutes)
To get any benefit out of this one, you have to have a good imagination. Don't step off immediately, build up to the jump. Study the ravine below. Feel the winds at that altitude. Step off and...AHHHHHH!!!!!

Try and sound Welsh
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)
The key to sounding Welsh is to make sure that your voice goes up at the end of the sentence, so that everything sounds like a question. Throw in a superfluous 'isn't it?' at the end of everything you say and you're halfway there. Isn't it?

Burn things with a magnifying glass
(Amusement Potential: 5-30 minutes)
Ants are always fun to use for this, but burning the face of someone you don't like, under some circumstances, can be just as entertaining.

THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH ANOTHER PERSON

Have a water gargling contest
(Amusement Potential: 5-10 minutes)
Put a glassful of water in your mouth and see how long you can keep gargling for. Award yourself extra points for loud and amusing gargling noises, and minus points if you laugh.

Always a good gag. For an even bigger reaction out of the person, act like you're not sorry at all for what they think you did. Comment instead on how big that sneeze was or about how there was a lot of mucus in that one.

Italy ordains first woman priest, where are we lagging...

Maria Vittoria Longhitano, 35, a married teacher has become the first woman priest to be ordained in Italy, received the holy orders at an Anglican church in Rome.

She belongs to the Italian Old Catholic Church, a congregation that broke away from Roman Catholicism in the 19th Century.
While the Vatican is opposed to women priests, other Christian groups have long accepted female clergy.
Mrs Longhitano, who will now be known as Mother Longhitano, said she hoped to break down what she described as prejudice in the Roman Catholic church.
"We are talking about an extremely hierarchical system; a male caste with a strong instinct of self-preservation," she said.
"And this is why there is this general attitude against ordaining women in the Church."
The Roman Catholic Church says it obeys the directives of Jesus Christ, whose 12 Apostles were all men.
The BBC's Duncan Kennedy in Rome says some commentators have argued that having more women in the Church may have helped prevent the priest child-abuse scandal of recent years.
Having women ordained in Italy from a fringe Catholic group will not be as divisive as women bishops has been in the Anglican communion, our correspondent says.
For now, its impact is likely to be more symbolic than anything more profound, he adds.

its my hobby collecting pics and clips of beggers.after 10 years of my research and collecting over 2000 clips i came to the decission that no one can change the mentallity of these living things.what ever you do for them,but can not change there style and habbits.they do not have religion,on diwali you can find them on mandir dwaars and on idd they will be begging in the name of allah out side masjids.

i hv been working at emergency freq.. never called my pts "THINGS" and i m afraid its not a code.. regarding raising my voice, i run my own voluntary NGO with we docs pay to poor pts with our own wallet, i did so many times, a few patients joined our hospital as staff..
more, our another big NGO run 12 madarsas free for education, several stiching... See More schools,and a few free computer education centres totally free for poor, and an old age home..
u need not to give logics of developed or underdeveloped, these are mere terms tht u must understand with heart..
i hv no attacking attitude on ur ego, nor i know u... i just need to give a small message of giving unconditional love to all without differentiation thts wt we belief in.. my friends who might hv been reading this knows me better...
my friend gawrav sinha is a professional amateur photographer, a great artist, and a renowned graphic designer attached with times grp, i know his views abt ppl not to call them things and putting no disrepected comments on them or their mentality unless u work hard to improve them..
i finally say i hv no intention to hurt ur ego.. but i wish u to change ur views abt life..

We believed same GOTRA means same PROJANY, but there are some conditions and ways which allowed marriage in same GOTRA, also… We are HINDUS so believed, trust, respect and we follow our custom/ a tradition … Where is the problem?

Holi Festival

One of the major festivals of India, Holi , the festival of colours is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is the month of March as per the Gregorian calendar.

Preparations

Entire country wears a festive look. Heaps of various hues of gulal and abeer can be seen shops days before the festival. Pichkaris (to sprinkle colour) come up to drench everybody in colours.

Women cook loads of gujiya, mathri and papri. At some places specially in the north women also make papads and potato chips at this time.

Season of Bloom

Holi is also called the Spring Festival - as it marks the arrival of spring the season of hope and joy.

Legends

A Hindu festival, Holi has various legends associated with it. The foremost is the legend of demon King Hiranyakashyap who demanded everybody in his kingdom to worship him but his pious son, Prahlad became a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap wanted his son to be killed. He asked his sister Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap as Holika had a boon which made he immune to fire. Story goes that Prahlad was saved by lord himself for his extreme devotion and evil minded Holika was burnt to ashes, for her boon worked only when she entered the fire alone.
Since that time, people light a bonfire, called Holika on the eve of Holi festival and celebrate the victory of good over evil and also the triumph of devotion to god. Children take special delight in the tradition and this has another legend attached to it. It says that there was once an ogress DhundhiHolika Dahan'. who used to trouble children in the kingdom of Prithu. She was chased away by children on the day of Holi. Therefore, children are allowed to play pranks at the time of '

Some also celebrate the death of evil minded Pootana. The ogress tried to Lord Krishna as an infant by feeding it poisonous milk while executing the plan of Kansa, Krishna's devil uncle. However, Krishna sucked her blood and brought her end. Some who view the origin of festivals from seasonal cycles believe that Pootana represents winter and her death the cessation and end of winter.
In South India, people worship Kaamadeva- the god of love and passion for his extreme sacrifice. According to a legend, Kaamadeva shot his powerful love arrow on Lord Shiva to revoke his interest in the worldly affairs in the interest of the earth. However, Lord Shiva was enraged as he was in deep mediation and opened his third eye which reduced Kaamadeva to ashes. Though, later on the request of Rati, Kaamadeva's wife, Shiva was pleased to restore him back.

Holika Dahan
On the eve of Holi, called Chhoti or Small Holi people gather at important crossroads and light huge bonfires, the ceremony is called Holika Dahan. To render greatfulness to Agni, god of Fire, gram and stalks from the harvest are also offered to Agni with all humility. Ash left from this bonfire is also considered sacred and people apply it on their foreheads. People believe that the ash protects them from evil forces.
Play of Colors

Bright colours of gulal and abeer fill the air & people pour colour water over each other. Children take special delight in spraying colours on one another with their pichkaris and throwing water balloons and passers by. Women and senior citizen form groups called tolis and move in colonies - applying colours and exchanging greetings. Songs, dance on the rhythm of dholak and mouthwatering Holi delicacies are the other highlights of the day.
Expression of Love
Lovers too long to apply colours on their beloved. It is said that the naughty and mischievous Lord Krishna started the trend of playing colours. He applied colour on her beloved Radha to make her one like him. No wonder, there is no match to the Holi of Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana - the places associated with the birth and childhood of Radha and Krishna.
Ecstasy of Bhang
There is also a tradition of consuming the very intoxicating bhang on this day to further enhance the spirit of Holi.
Sober Evening
After a funfilled and exciting day, the evenings the spent in sobriety when people meet friends and relatives and exchange sweets and festive greetings.

It is said the spirit of Holi encourages the feeling of brotherhood in society and even the enemies turn friend on this day. People of all communities and religions participate in this joyous and colouful festival and strenthen the secular fabric of the nation.

Lathmar Holi

the hub of holi in India - Barsana, Holi is known as Lathmaar Holi. The stick is in the hands of the women on this day and the men need to work a lot to save themselves from the immensely charged up womenfolk.

The birth place of Lord Krishna's beloved Radha, Barsana celebrates Holi with extreme enthusiasm as Krishna was famous for playing pranks on Radha and gopis. In fact, it was Krishna who started the tradition of colours by first applying colour on Radha's face.

Men of Nandgaon, the birthplace of Krishna, come to play Holi with the girls of Barsana, but instead of colours they are greeted with sticks. Men come fully padded and try their best to escape from the spirited women. The unlucky ones are forcefully led away and get a good thrashing from the women. Further, they are made to wear a female attire and dance in public. All in the spirit of Holi.

Next day, it is the turn of men of Barsana. They reciprocate by invading Nandgaon and drench the womenfolk of Nandgaon in colours of kesudo, naturally occurring orange-red dye and palash. This day, women of Nadagow beat the invaders from Barsana. It is a colourful site.

Highways in the South American nation of 16 million were sliced to pieces, bridges imploded and buildings collapsed as the 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck overnight some 325 kilometers (200 miles) southwest of the capital Santiago.

Waves well over two meters high (seven feet) crashed into the Chilean coast after the quake struck at 3:34 am (0634 GMT) and tore out into the Pacific, killing at least five people in the remote Robinson Crusoe islands.

About 50 countries and territories along an arc stretching from New Zealand to Japan braced for giant waves, five years after the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster that killed more than 220,000 people.

The massive quake plunged much of the Chilean capital Santiago into darkness, snapping power lines, severing communications. The international airport was closed after sustaining significant damage to the terminal.
Many Chileans were still in nightclubs partying at the start of the weekend when the quake struck before dawn, ripping up roads, bringing roofs crashing down and toppling power lines.
It was the second major earthquake to hit the Western hemisphere in seven weeks after more than 200,000 people were killed in Haiti last month by a 7.0-magnitude quake. When Svetlana Kuzain (name changed to protect identity) landed in Goa with her husband and daughter two days before Christmas, she was looking forward to quiet times meditating, pursuing yoga and visiting Sathya Sai Baba’s Ashram at Puttaparti, Andhra Pradesh.
Instead, the 34-year-old Ayurveda exponent from Moscow is struggling to get justice for her nine-year-old daughter who was allegedly raped on a beach in the tourist hot spot.

Svetlana said she always cherished India as “the land of spiritual salvation”. “Though the incident has shaken my confidence, I like this country,” she said. “I will return because I want to live in the Ashram.”

The earthquake in Haiti – a 7.0 on the Richter scale – is a major humanitarian emergency and could be responsible for as many as 100,000 deaths when all the damage is assessed. Tens of thousands have been left homeless by the disaster.

Governments, organizations and nonprofits around the world are mobilizing to provide relief. If you would like to help, the American Red Cross is encouraging donations to its International Response Fund, which provides immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support. Also, Doctors Without Borders is in Haiti and is seeking volunteers and donations.

More than 110,000 killed in Haiti quake: ministry- Hindustan Times

The earthquake that plunged Haiti into darkness is another blow to a nation that has seen more than its share of misery.

Endemic instability, murderous dictators, more than 30 coups and a seemingly endless series of hurricanes and other natural disasters have claimed countless souls over Haiti's tumultuous 206-year history, leaving it the Americas' poorest country and utterly dependent on foreign aid.

More than 110,000 people were confirmed killed in the Haiti earthquake, the interior ministry has said, making it the deadliest quake on record in the Americas.

The ministry put the toll from the disastrous January 12 quake at 111,499. The government had previously said that at least 75,000 people were killed.

The statement said that 193,891 people were injured in the 7.0-magnitude quake that hit the capital Port-au-Prince.

More than 609,000 people were currently living in 500 temporary camps, it said, updating a previous figure of 500,000 homeless.

Haitian officials have expressed fear that the death toll from the country's worst earthquake in over a century may surpass 200,000.

The US Geological Survey said the Haiti disaster has already gone down in history as the most destructive on record in this region.

"That's probably accurate that this is the most deadly quake to occur in this part of the world," USGS geophysicist Dale Grant told AFP.

"I don't think we've seen anything like it in this area," he added.

Prior to Haiti, the USGS lists the 1970 Peru earthquake as the deadliest in the Americas, with an estimated 70,000 killed

Add to that Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude quake, the strongest to hit what is now Haiti since 1770. Initial reports on its destruction are frightening.

The quake occurred along a fault line believed responsible for seven large quakes between 1618 and 1860, said Harley Benz of the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. According to historical records, the 1860 quake struck Port-au-Prince and may have produced a tsunami.

Add to that Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude quake, the strongest to hit what is now Haiti since 1770. Initial reports on its destruction are frightening.

The largest recorded earthquake in modern times on the island of Hispaniola was an 8.1-magnitude temblor that produced a tsunami and killed 1,790 people in 1946. Centered in the Dominican Republic, it extended into Haiti, according to the USGS.

Haiti was born in 1804, after the world's first successful slave rebellion. French troops surrendered to forces led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines. But the country's leaders drove it into a paralyzing disorder from which it has yet to recover.

Political turmoil prompted U.S. Marines to occupy Haiti from 1915 to 1934. In 1937, some 18,000 Haitians were massacred along the Dominican border on the orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.

In 1957, Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier rose to power, launching a 29-year dynasty of terror. Tens of thousands were killed under Duvalier and his son, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier.

It wasn't until 1990 that Haiti had its first democratically elected president: Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a slum priest who inspired the overwhelmingly poor majority. But Aristide was overthrown in 1991, and Haitians took to the seas by the thousands in a desperate exodus to Florida.

President Bill Clinton sent 20,000 U.S. troops to Haiti in 1994 to restore Aristide, who was re-elected in 2000. Aristide's initial promise soon flickered: Accusations that his party rigged legislative elections, pocketed millions of dollars in foreign aid and sent gangsters to attack opponents produced a bloody rebellion that ousted him in 2004.

With victims pinned under debris and powerful aftershocks rattling the country, looting broke out soon after the 7.0 magnitude quake which spared no part of the capital Port-au-Prince, which was close to the epicentre.

Injured residents of the crowded city poured into the streets screaming in panic with each new tremor. Many bodies were just left in the streets or crushed under debris.

The quake toppled the cupola on the gleaming white presidential palace, a major hotel where 200 tourists were missing and the headquarters of the UN mission in Haiti where up to 250 personnel were unaccounted for.

As many as 1,400 youths, including some professionals, associated with a sect have decided to tie the nuptial knot with sex workers to help them lead a respectable life.

The volunteers, participating in a ceremony organised by Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa, have pledged to marry sex workers from Kolkata and New Delhi.

"We are organising an event tomorrow where about 1,400 youths will vow to marry women who were forced into prostitution and want to escape further exploitation. Some families have also decided to legally adopt these women and their children," the sect's spokesman Aditya Insan told PTI.

All the volunteers are members of the Dera, he said.

While some 2-3 couples will tie the knot tomorrow, others will do so within a year, he said, adding the event is also aimed to check the spread of HIV/AIDS.

He said by helping drug users and sex workers "we are trying to help remove people from the highest risk situations and check the spread of HIV/AIDS".
