The Milky Way Photos

Many travel and landscape photographers do not to miss the opportunity to shoot the night sky views, including myself. I sometimes explore opportunities to take pictures of the stars and the Milky Way at night. Often the results, can depending on luck.

Sometimes we are lucky enough to shoot the night sky. Sometimes the sky is too dark the clouds and we did not get anything. But if we are lucky, we will get a unique picture, although not perfect.

These amazing photos show our Milky Way galaxy from the inside out. The Milky Way is actually a galaxy - a large system of stars, gas (mostly hydrogen), dust and dark matter that orbits a common center and is bound together by gravity.

This story about the Unduk Ngadau competition held during Kaamatan festival at division level. Do you know what is Unduk Ngadau?

Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan is a beauty pageant held during the Kaamatan cultural event in Sabah, Malaysia. The title comes from the ethnic word Runduk Tadau which means 'the girl crowned by the sunlight'. Unduk Ngadau is one of the most recognizable cultural events in Sabah and the beauty pageant is unique to the state. In Rungus Language, Runduk means "to communicate", and Tadau means "the Sun", therefore Unduk Ngadau translates to communicate with Sundu (Kinorohingan) or God asking for blessing of sunlight.

But this is not the state level competition but the first step to the higher level. This competition will give way to contestant to compete at the district level later.

These are 3 contestants who have won the Unduk Ngadau competition at division level and will compete at the district level.

Lagi Trip ke Kundasang. Kali ini Bersama Rombongan

Sekali lagi buat lawatan ke Kundasang, Ranau. Entah kali ke berapa datang ke sini saya pun sudah tidak boleh mengingatinya. Apapun, lawatan ini berbeza daripada lawatan sebelumnya kerana dilakukan bersama rombongan yang besar. Tak silap saya hampir 50 orang. Disertai oleh beberapa keluarga yang sama tempat kerja dengan saya.

Salah satu tempat yang menjadi tumpuan trip kali ini, pusat penternakan dan pemprosesan lembu tenusu atau dikenali sebagai Desa Dairy Farm. Kalau hendak tahu lebih lanjut tentang tempat tu, klik saja pautan yang disertakan.

Sebelum menamatkan lawatan di sini (tak lama pun, cuma lebih kurang 30 minit), kami sempat bergambar bersama untuk kenang-kenangan.

Menara Tun Mustapha (Sabah Foundation Building)

Menara Tun Mustapha or formerly known as Sabah Foundation Building is one of the tourism destinations located in Kota Kinabalu (Capital City), Sabah Malaysian Borneo.

7th Sabah International Folklore Festival 2012

Once again dance troupes from around the world gather for the seventh edition of the Sabah International Folklore Festival 2012. The 7th Sabah International Folklore Festival will be held from July 8 to 17.

The Magic Fresh Water Spring

Magic! Mystery! Strange but it's true! Perhaps it is the feeling and the words that will be expressed when I first time visited and witnessed the unique freshwater springs coming out from between the rocks located in a salty environment, being by the sea. A real story behind the myth of Cursed Ship of Supirak and Mystery of Batu Gerawang in Kampung Malubang, one of the villages in Pitas, Sabah (Sabah is a state of Malaysian located in the northern Borneo island).

The magic freshwater spring located on the beach near Batu Gerawang. If you look at the photo below, you can see a square concrete beside the rock and there is the freshwater springs that I mean.

The villagers told us, the freshwater springs was first discovered by one of the villagers here, Mr. Abdul Kassim Kagia (excuse me if the spelling is not accurate). According to them, he (Abdul Kassim) had a dream; an old man came to see him and then tell him there is a magic freshwater springs in the village that have not been found by anyone. The old man also tell him where is freshwater springs location.

The next day, he went to the location that was told in his dream and was found two holes in the rocks and there is water flowing from inside. He felt the water and he was surprised because it is really fresh.

It is quite hard to believe because the freshwater springs located about 5 meters from the beach. This means it is located in salt water and will only appear on the surface when the water has receded. That is weird with this spring. Although always covered with salt water above and around it, this spring will be producing fresh water.

Since there are two holes (springs) that can produce freshwater, on the initiative of the Pitas District Officer, concrete wall was built around the spring to prevent salt water covering it, so the visitors can take the freshwater even during high tide. However, less strong concrete wall causing salt water still entered and permanent stagnant in the barrier, so the water in the concrete walls are also still salty. Means, if you want to take the freshwater, you have to wait until low tides.

I also ask question to the villagers if there is something "special" or magic with this spring. They said, of course there are a number of benefits! In fact, tourists from China and Korea have come here just to get water from the spring. However, I refuse to mention here to avoid any conflict of beliefs and understanding. If you are interested to know more, come here to find out whether there is magic or not.

To reach the Kampung Malubang where the freshwater spring located, you need traveling about 2 hours from Pitas town. You can choose between two types of transportation; by road using four-wheel drive or waterways using motor boat down the Bengkoka River. If given the choice, I would like to prefer waterways because at the same time I can enjoy the natural scenery along the river.

Here are some more pictures that I took during our holiday in Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak. All These pictures were taken using Nikon D90, AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED lens and build-in flash.

To produce these pictures, I also use the same technique with my first travel photography; edited by using some type of software to enhancing the photos. However, for the picture below, I did not change or edit much except for the hue and saturation.

For these pictures, I use the preset that found in Color Efex Pro, including Cross Balance, Color Stylizer and Darken/Lighten Center. To get a trace of smoke in the picture, I was spraying some white color. The main idea is to create a classic and historic photograph, since there is a lot of history at the Kuching city.

Perhaps, my editing techniques are incorrect or not follow the concept. However, the meaning of a picture is subjective and it depends on the individual. As a beginner, I need to try several techniques to get me interested in color tone.

Of course, produce pictures like this is not an easy job, especially when the picture is quite poor quality. This is where I learned one thing; I'm supposed to learn what's best for taking pictures, not learn what is best for editing the pictures!

The Mystery of Batu Gerawang

Batu Gerawang is a stone shaped like a gate that has its own story. If you visit the Supirak island, you can also come to visit the Batu Gerawang in same day because it is located on the beach, not far from the island. The beach is also known as 'Torong Putih' (White cape) because the beach is clean and shiny.

I was the first stop in that place also quite impressed with the natural phenomenon at this place. The Batu Gerawang is not only unique and exotic look, but there is another story behind its existence.

The villagers who took us there told, Batu Gerawang also has related with the myth of Supirak Island. They claimed that this stone is an old woman called 'Odu Gerawang'. Odu Gerawang was the mother of Supirak, a sea captain who was cursed by his mother for his unfilial manner (read the story here).

Odu Gerawang was very sad and chagrined after cursed Supirak and his entire crew. She then knew that her life is meaningless without Supirak and prayed to God that she also turned into stone.

Another interesting story about this place is the freshwater springs coming out from between the rocks located in a salty environment, being by the sea. The people in this area believe the freshwater spring is Odu Gerawang's tears. I will write about that in next post.

Actually, there are many and various interesting sites in Pitas district that can be of great interest to tourists. However, only a little information is available online. For example, before writing this post, I tried to find some information about 'Batu Dulang Kampung Malubang' using search engines. The search results show there is only several blog or website has write about Batu Gerawang. So, I would like to remind that there may be a picture or description on this blog with another blog. Copyright issues will not arise because both are owned by the same person.

My Travel Photo

I took this picture when my family and I visited several places in Peninsular Malaysia. The idea for these photos is very simple. Just take a photo while enjoying the beautiful architecture and natural environment without any planning or preparation. I didn’t care about light, equipments and other setting.

What's really missing here is composition and focusable lights, whereas both are basic and general rules. It can attract audience attention to our subject and make our picture speak to them. I realize that without good composition and focus my picture is less meaningful. So, I used some type of software to edit and enhancing the photos. Crop the image to hide any part of which is less important, then to make a picture looks good, I have tried several different shades and combinations of a color, also change picture tones.

The results, it is slightly different from the original image.

Taking picture like this gives me new experiences. Anyone can point a camera and click a shutter, but not everyone can produce pictures that attracted others to look at it. In short, any picture may be worth a thousand words, but only a few rare photos tell more. I will not stop to learn more about photography that can help me produce better photos.

Supirak Island (Cursed Ship of Supirak)

Perhaps some of you have never heard about the "Supirak Island" or "Cursed Ship of Supirak", but for Malubang villagers and many local people in Pitas district (Sabah), they not only can show where the Supirak Island, but also can tell the story of how the origins of incidents an island resembles like a ship.

What I remember, the first time heard about that island in 1988, through schoolmate, who hails from Kampung Malubang (Malubang village). It has long been tempted to come to a place with many stories yet to break the mystery, but still not able to set foot there. Recently, I am lucky has been given the task to carry out monitoring at several locations in Pitas district. One of the must visit is the village Malubang. So this opportunity has given space to me and several colleagues to visit that place.

Back to the story of the island, according to Malubang villagers, this island is actually a large ship belonging to the Master Supirak, a ship captain. However, due to the curse as a rebel against his mother, the ship, Supirak and the entire crew turned into stone! In short, the story of Supirak Island is not much different to a popular Malaysian legend, 'Si Tanggang, the Ungrateful Son', just different names and places.

To reach the island, first you need to come to Pitas, which is located 171 kilometers and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes - 3 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu. From Pitas town you need to take 4-wheel drive to Kampung Malubang, where the journey will take nearly 2 hours. After that, take a boat from the jetty of Kampung Malubang located near the school. Ask the villagers who can take you there, because there a no public transportation.

We have a good luck that day because one of the villagers there willing to take us to his boat. Only takes about 5 minutes to get there.

When the boat approached the island, we were well impressed with it shape looks like a ship. Not only that, according to the villagers who took us there, in the past there are many other stone shapes that resembles the human shape, ropes, tables and other equipment. Unfortunately at the present time the shapes are no longer visible due to physical changes on the island. However, it did not dampen our spirit to continue the exploration.

I'm not sure what the island height above sea level, but to reach the top is not difficult because of the Pitas District Office has been providing facilities for the jetty and climb stairs. There are also two rest huts on the island. We spend about 30 minutes to enjoy the natural beauty on the island before heading to another location.

This place is beautiful. It is an ideal place for snorkeling, sea bathing and basking on the sun kissed beach. However, currently there are no resorts here, but visitors can find homestay for short periods of service (one night or a weekend).

Apart from Pulau Batu Supirak, Malubang also known for several interesting locations that also has its own story, including Batu Talam, Fresh Water Wells in the middle of the sea, Batu Gerawang (stone), Batu Berunsai, Batu Talam and a lot more to get the attention. The Sabah Tourism has announced those places as one of the tourism attractions in Sabah. I will share the stories that later.

Jong's Crocodile Farm & Zoo, Kuching Sarawak

I went to Kuching Sarawak last year but due to busy managing other daily activities, this post rather late publication. However, because of this experience is not focus on the current hot story, there is no time limit to publish it.

Jong's Crocodile Farm & Zoo is an attractive place and one of the largest and the only crocodile breeding farm in Sarawak. Located about 29km (18 ½ Mile) from Kuching - Serian Highway and takes about 20 minutes leisure drive from Kuching Town, the capital of Sarawak, Land of Hornbills. This place set amidst the charming backdrop of tall tropical trees, lush vegetation and local fruit trees lays this unique farm with over a thousand crocodiles bred in captivity. The farm also provides a perfect sanctuary for the reptiles, saving the species from extinction. There are huge and deep concrete ponds and natural breeding grounds for the crocodiles to mate and multiply.

Our arrival was ‘greeted’ by a giant replica of a crocodile located in front of the main entrance. Before enter, I let my children play on the replica while my nephew buy the tickets. They are very interested because this is the first time they see crocodiles up close (although there an only a replica).

To enter, visitors must pay for tickets; RM16.00 per person (adult) for foreign tourists and RM8.00 per person (children). For the local tourists (Sarawak), the farm owners charge RM10.00 per person (adult) and RM5.00 per person (children). Visitors will be given a tag when purchasing tickets and required to put it on their hand. According them, this is for security reason.

Crocodile pool (pictured below) is where the crocodile feeding show is held. Here you will get to see up close just how aggressive the crocodiles.

Visitors are able to gaze at the snapping jaws, cold menacing eyes, sharp pointed teeth and powerful lashing tails of the crocs within short distance yet safe because of the metal fence.

Apart from crocodiles there are also numerous rare species of birds and animals found only in the Borneo Island. Visitors can have the enchanting experience of walking freely among the monkeys, bearcats, leopard-cats, sun bears, civets, deer, pheasants, turtles, fruit bats, monitor lizards, pythons and even hornbills.

Although our visit a bit short, because it was already late afternoon, but being on Jong's Crocodile Farm & Zoo is an interesting experience. So, for those who want to have a different kind of experience you should consider looking at these unique tours.

The Colorful World of Bengkoka Festival

As many readers of my blog already know about Bengkoka Festival (as I have written two parts about Bengkoka Festival before). So, I do not need to explain more. However, for those who first came here, you can read about the unique festival here - Part 1 and Part 2.

Today, I just want to share a few more photographs from the festival. All These pictures were taken using Nikon D90, AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED and AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G ED lens, Nikon Speedlite SB-900 and 67mm iLens Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter.

Taking pictures in the open space in hot summer day is going to let a lot of light to hit the sensor. With the camera setting in manual mode, it’s hard to take pictures very quickly since each location has different clarity depend to the Sun light.

Luckily, I have purchased a 67mm I-Lens Variable Neutral Density (ND) Filter, so I can control the amount of light hitting the sensor without changing the camera settings. When I was in the shade area, Nikon Speedlite SB-900 can help me take a picture with an easy way.

Pesta Bengkoka Pitas 2012 (Part 2)

This is another post about Pesta Bengkoka Pitas 2012. I suggest you read the first part before continuing on this second part.

The second day of the festival began with tug of war competition. The tug of war or 'tarik tali' called by local people is a sport that directly pits two teams against each other in a test of strength. Two teams of eight, whose total mass must not exceed a maximum weight as determined for the class, align themselves at the end of a rope approximately 10 centimeters in circumference.

The rope is marked with a "center line" and two markings four meters either side of the center line. The teams start with the rope's center line directly above a line marked on the ground, and once the contest (the "pull") has commenced, attempt to pull the other team such that the marking on the rope closest to their opponent crosses the center line, or the opponents commit a foul (such as a team member sitting or falling down).

Over at the houses in the Pitas Ethnic Culture, local people started to play music using traditional instruments and dances of their respective tribes. Some of them are wearing their traditional clothing. In other angle, local artistes and performers were getting ready to entertain the audience in the opening ceremony. Most of them will present a traditional dance that became the main attraction of this festival.

Not long after, the opening started. Chief Minister Sabah Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, in his speech delivered by state Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor said, Pesta Bengkoka can help promote the district as a new state tourism destination. He also belived Pitas will be a popular tourism destination one day because the district was also blessed with a beautiful and unique natural environment apart from being rich in culture and traditions.

Besides, Pitas District Officer who is also Chairman of the Main Committee Pesta Bengkoka dan Kaamatan 2012, Sapdin Ibrahim in his speech at the ceremony among others said that there are many treasures in this area such as the Tanjung Perak Batu Si Tenggang equal tragedy, Stone Beruncai, Batu Talam, Fresh Water Wells in the middle of the sea, and a lot more to get the attention of the people of this district to be developed as tourist attractions in and outside the country.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Transport, (Kudat MP) Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister and Pitas Assemblyman, Datuk Bolkiah Ismail, Member of Legislative Assembly Banggi, Datuk Haji Abdul Mijul Unaini.

Opening ceremony event was also graced by Sabah cultural dances and Book of 'Supirak' launching and traditional dance performances. After that, decorated boat contest took place.

In the evening, several events were held including; closing ceremony, Prize Presentation, bodybuilders performances, guest artistes' performances (including Adira AF, Ayu-OIAM and other local artists), also fireworks show.

For me, what is interesting about this festival is a concept used by the organizers. Festival organizers use cultural, historical and trade Expo/agriculture themes to develop annual events to attract visitors. Such festivals provide opportunities for the local community to find out more local culture beside generate income from the business during the festival.

Pesta Bengkoka Pitas 2012 (Part 1)

Several years ago Pesta Bengkoka (Bengkoka Festival) celebration was held only in the river to the compound of the field, but in recent years the festival has expanded in a very strategic seaside, called Dataran Bengkoka. Now, Pesta Bengkoka is becoming more popular not only among the people of this area but, also people from all over the country.

This year celebration is more different from the previous years. This festival was not held in conjunction with the district level Harvest Festival celebrations because it had been it was conducted a week earlier. However, several new events have been added in the festival including: Seafood Carnival, Seafood Cooking Competition, launching 'Pesta Bengkoka' Theme Song, Battle of the Band Competition, Sea Sports, Sukan Rakyat (Traditional Sports), Book of 'Supirak' launching, Tug of War, Decorated Boat Contest, visit houses in the Pitas Ethnic Culture, Trade Expo/Agriculture, 4 Wheel Drive Vehicle Competition, Competition Auto Audio System, local artists performance and many other events.

The Pesta Bengkoka 2012 event kicked off with an early morning Fishing Tournament and Drawing Competition for children (preschool level). Response to the two earlier events is encouraging. Many more are taking part. In the distance, a row of amateur anglers were perched on top of the rocks, each hoping to reel in a prize-winning catch. On the stage, children who are accompany by their teachers or parents busy with drawing paper and water colour.

In the afternoon, Pitas District Officer as the Chief Administrative Region, Mr. Sapdin Ibrahim starts to launching the Seafood Carnival and Seafood Cooking Competition (anchovies). This is the first time this event was held. Mr. Sapdin Ibrahim in his speech at the ceremony said that seafood is one of the Pitas products that can be commercialized and developed as tourist attractions in and outside the country. For info, Pitas district is very popular as a producer of dried anchovies, known for its best quality and low prices. Fisherman in this district using 'bagang', a traditional fishing structure made of nibong (Indo-Malayan coasts palm species - Oncosperma tigillarium) and bamboo for catching anchovy.

On the second day, early morning events begin with a motorboat racing and 'Bagong' boat racing for sea sports, also traditional sport, tug of war take place. This event is no less interesting when the visitors start cheering. However, both the events were held in conjunction, so visitors have to choose whether to watch motorboat racing or tug of war. I choose to watch the boat racing so there's no time to take photographs for tug of war.

In other angle, over 40 booths at the exhibition area where various State agencies, Federal, Private and NGOs took part. All the participants are busy making final preparations for the exhibition finale on Sunday, May 27, however, it does not prevent a crowd of visitors start to going through the various information on display.

Sabah is rich in traditional handicraft, such as baskets, native hats, beaded necklaces, musical instruments, textiles and woven boxes. The local people still produce many of them, touching each piece with a bit of their culture, their traditions, and their lives. This is another interesting thing which attracts visitors during the exhibition.

Most of these items will not only be kept for decoration, but still used to this day. For examples, baskets, which are made from bamboo or rattan, are still used by the natives in their everyday lives. They can carry anything with traditional baskets, from fruits to firewood and paddy stalks is transported in the various baskets. There is the uniqueness of the Bengkoka Festival.

Pesta Bengkoka Pitas Will Start Today!

Chinese History Museum Kuching, Sarawak

This is another post about our trip to Kuching Sarawak. I like to share with others because there are lots of interesting things from our experience to explore the history of Bumi Kenyalang (Land of the Hornbills), where it can be found in the Chinese History Museum (Chinese Chamber of Commerce Building) at Kuching, Sarawak.

A visit to this museum as early as 9.00 am. It is quite easy to find this building because it just right opposite the Tua Pek Kong Temple and not far from Harbour View Hotel where we stayed. Our arrival was greeted by one of the officers in charge of the museum. He graciously invited us inside. I saw one notice board near the main entrance inform that visitors can bring camera only with the permission, so I showed my DSLR, ask their permission and of course the person looking after the place allowed me.

The building was officially opened in 1912. Established to handle administration of the laws and customs associated with marriage, divorce, and other properties specific to the Chinese community in Sarawak. This is consistent with the requirements of King Charles Vyner Brooke, who wants the Chinese handle their own property. The first chairman was Mr Ong Tiong Swee. He is assisted by six judges from a variety of Chinese descent to be appointed each year. Building design is influenced by the British colonial building design. and a simple rectangular shape with a hall measuring 46 feet square, and wooden ceilings. In 1993, Sarawak Government has renovated this building as Chinese History Museum.

The exhibition at this museum displays many elements related to the origin; quarter; dialect groups: traditional skills, culture and festivals; traditional musical instruments; and leader. The goal is to educate the current generation to better understand and appreciate the struggles of earlier pioneers. What is more interesting, the elements of this history is not only presented in the form of artifacts and visual, but are also presented in the form of audio. Visitors can listen to conversations using a variety of dialects, which refers to the history display. The Chinese visitors can also check their Chinese name that is featured on one of the walls in the museum.

One of the architectural model that is synonymous and the iconography of the Chinese community are also being exhibited in this museum. The Chinese are well known for architecture based on the principles of symmetry and balance. This concept is often presented in the form of symbolic abstract architecture of three types of components, frames, and decorative elements.

The uniqueness of Chinese architecture is usually apparent in unique roof and has a curved and elongated shape with a ridge Yan-Wei Chi . While the wood bracket supports ("Dougong") are often used as a helper to hold multi-tilt roof. At present we are still able to see this architecture is used in traditional buildings such as the temple of the Chinese community.

Chinese people and pottery can not be separated. In fact, I've read a script that in English, "China" not only refers to the state of a country (China), but also carries the meaning of pottery. It is no wonder this museum also displays some artifacts on pottery used by the Chinese, especially in Sarawak.

There a also featured some traditional Chinese musical instruments, including the Qin, Gu Zheng, mang Luo, Da Hu Gi and Pi Pa (pipe). It is a four stringed instrument. Pi Pa body is made of wood, while the use of metal strings. During play, Pi Pa held in standing position and placed on the shoulders of the players. Pi Pa ropes then extracted with tips of fingers and nails. The fingers of other hand placed on the strings between the fret to produce various pitches. Usually it is often played to accompany the Chinese opera singing solo or accompanied. Below are some of the photos that I took.

A record player classic (gramophone / phonograph record player) is placed near the information counter in the museum. The red colour or 'hong' is the preferred color of the Chinese community. For them, the red reflects a clear, bright conditions and represents a promising ray brightness of joy in life.

Visit to this museum for the first time is a wonderful experience. My children also happy. I can saw their pleasure when pressing the button repeatedly to listen to audio recordings of the Chinese community. Even though they (including myself) do not understand what the talk about (only understood after reading the transcript provided), but the audio is able to provide an environment as if we were contemporaries who are involved.

However, children like them should be given guidance and clarification because their cognitive still hard to think of abstract things. I believe that early exposure like this will teach them to better appreciate the past history of their ancestors.

Dataran Bengkoka Pitas, Sabah New Tourism Destination

Dataran Bengkoka located at the Tanjung Senimpul in Pitas. Pitas is one of furthest district in Sabah North Division, approximately 158 kilometers (2 hours 30 minutes - 3 hours away by car) from Kota Kinabalu City, the state capital of Sabah.

This place actually is not only the best locations for fishing, beach lover, great for seafood fans and popular spot for photographer but also recognized as Sabah New Tourism Destination by the Sabah Tourism Board because Local Authorities have made this place as a center for the annual festival called Pesta Bengkoka (Bengkoka Festival).

The Festival which is usually will take place in May every year in conjunction with the district level Harvest Festival Celebration. It aims to showcase Pitas and its appeal through a tagunggu contest, unique bagong boat race and boat decoration competition. Guests can visit the agricultural expo, handicraft exhibition and participate in numerous activities such as a seafood cook-off and fishing challenge.

Since it officially opened on July 23, 2007, Dataran Bengkoka has undergone many changes. Now, there is a replica of the lobster as a landmark of this place. There are also efforts to build a fence, guard houses and drainage systems to ensure that the beauty of the landscape beautification and provide comfort to the visitors.

As local people, I am proud because Pitas district also has tourist attractions. Hope many more facilities will be added here, such as children playgrounds (which was previously available), jogging track, Free Kampung WiFi. I am sure, with these facilities, more visitors will be attracted to come here.
