Battle of Britain Day: Remembering the Few

2026-09-15T15:51:56.995+01:00

Today, 15 September, Britain remembers one of the most extraordinary moments in its history — the day that became known as Battle of Britain Day.

Eighty-six years ago, the skies above Britain filled with aircraft.

The country stood alone against Nazi Germany and faced the terrifying possibility that defeat in the air could be followed by invasion on the ground.

On 15 September 1940, the Luftwaffe launched one of its largest and most concentrated assaults of the Battle of Britain. Fighter Command met it head-on.

What followed was a day of furious aerial combat over southern England and London. By the end of it, the German attack had suffered heavy losses and the RAF had demonstrated that it was still capable of defending Britain's skies. The date subsequently became known as Battle of Britain Day.

It is tempting, 86 years later, to reduce the story to a handful of famous names: Spitfires, Hurricanes, Douglas Bader, the iconic pilots of Fighter Command.

But the reality was both more frightening and more remarkable.

These were young men climbing into aircraft knowing that they might not come back.

The average age of an RAF pilot in 1940 was just 20. Many had only weeks of training before being thrown into the battle. The RAF records that 2,945 aircrew faced the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain, with 544 members of “The Few” killed.

And “The Few” were not all British.

Pilots from across the Commonwealth, occupied Europe and elsewhere flew for Britain. Roughly a fifth of the RAF's Battle of Britain pilots came from outside the United Kingdom. Poles, Czechs, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Frenchmen and others fought alongside British airmen.

This was an international force defending an island that had become the last major European power still fighting Nazi Germany.

But the pilots were only part of the story.

Behind them stood The Many.

Radar operators tracked incoming formations. Ground crews worked desperately to refuel, rearm and repair aircraft. Controllers directed squadrons into battle. Women of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force worked in operations rooms. Air Raid Wardens, firefighters, police officers, engineers, mechanics and countless civilians played their part.

The RAF itself stresses that the victory depended on the hard work and determination of “The Many” as well as the courage of “The Few.”

That is perhaps one of the most important things to remember today.

Great national achievements are rarely the work of one person.

They are built by thousands of people doing their jobs, often under extraordinary pressure, while knowing that failure could have consequences far beyond themselves.

And failure in 1940 would have been catastrophic.

Much of continental Europe had already fallen to Hitler's Germany. France had been defeated. Britain was isolated. German forces were massed across the Channel and Hitler's planned invasion of Britain depended upon Germany first establishing control of the skies.

The RAF's victory prevented that.

The Battle of Britain was the first major battle fought entirely in the air, and its outcome represented Nazi Germany's first major military defeat.

The battle itself continued beyond 15 September and formally lasted until 31 October. But that September day became the symbol because it demonstrated, in spectacular fashion, that the Luftwaffe could not simply sweep Fighter Command from Britain's skies.

Two days after the great battle of 15 September, Hitler postponed Operation Sea Lion — the planned invasion of Britain. The RAF's resistance had helped make the invasion impossible to proceed as originally envisaged.

That is why this anniversary matters.

It is not merely nostalgia for old aircraft.

It is not simply an excuse to admire the elegant lines of a Spitfire.

And it certainly isn't about pretending that war was glorious.

War was terrifying. People died. Civilians suffered. Young men went into combat and never returned.

Battle of Britain Day is about remembering what those people were willing to risk when the consequences of defeat were enormous.

It is about courage.

It is about duty.

It is about ingenuity under pressure.

It is about ordinary people performing extraordinary tasks when their country needed them.

And it is about remembering that Britain did not stand alone because Britain was invulnerable.

It stood because people refused to give up.

Today, when a Spitfire or Hurricane passes overhead, it can be easy to see only the romance of history: the roar of the Merlin engine, the RAF roundel, the unmistakable silhouette against a summer sky.

But imagine being underneath those aircraft in 1940.

Imagine hearing the sirens.

Imagine looking upwards and seeing hundreds of aircraft fighting overhead.

Imagine being one of those 20-year-old pilots climbing into the cockpit knowing that the next few minutes might determine whether you ever saw home again.

Then remember the names.

And remember the nameless too.

The pilots whose stories survived.

The pilots whose stories did not.

The mechanics who kept battered aircraft flying.

The women watching plotting tables in operations rooms.

The ground crews working through exhaustion.

The families waiting for footsteps that sometimes never came.

The Few were never really alone.

They were carried by The Many — and behind them stood a nation determined to remain free.

That is what we should remember today.

Not simply that Britain won a battle.

But that, at one of the darkest moments in our history, a generation found the courage to fight for the future.

Lest we forget.

Merchant Navy Day: Remembering Those Who Kept Britain Afloat

2026-09-03T17:09:24.129+01:00

Today, 3 September, we mark Merchant Navy Day; a day to remember, recognise and give thanks to the men and women of the Merchant Navy, past and present.

For many people, the Merchant Navy may feel like a part of Britain's history. The truth is that merchant seafarers remain an essential part of our lives today. Every day, they work at sea transporting the food, fuel, medicines, raw materials and countless other goods on which our communities and economy depend.

Merchant Navy Day gives us an opportunity to pause and recognise that contribution.

What is Merchant Navy Day?

Merchant Navy Day is held every year on 3 September. It was established in 2000 as a national day of recognition for merchant seafarers and their contribution to Britain.

The date also carries a powerful historical significance. On 3 September 1939, the passenger ship SS Athenia was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat, becoming the first British merchant vessel lost during the Second World War.

The day therefore has two important purposes: to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to recognise the vital role merchant seafarers continue to play today.

Remembering those who served

During both World Wars, merchant seafarers faced extraordinary dangers.

While not members of the Armed Forces, they sailed into war zones carrying essential supplies. Their ships transported food, fuel, ammunition, equipment and other necessities that Britain and its allies desperately needed.

More than 20,000 British merchant seafarers lost their lives during the Second World War alone.

They faced U-boats, mines, aircraft, storms and the constant uncertainty of sailing through hostile waters. Many never returned home.

Their contribution was quite literally a lifeline for the nation.

Today, we remember not only those who died but also the families who waited for loved ones to return, and the generations of seafarers who served in the years that followed.

The Merchant Navy today

Merchant Navy Day is not simply about looking back.

The Merchant Navy continues to play a crucial role in modern Britain. Commercial ships connect the UK with markets and communities around the world, transporting the goods that keep businesses operating and households supplied.

The UK Government describes merchant seafarers as playing a vital role in global trade, tourism and national security, keeping supply chains moving and supporting the country's economy.

And behind every ship is a crew of people.

Seafarers can spend weeks or months away from their families, working long hours and living in an environment that can be demanding, unpredictable and sometimes dangerous. Their work can easily go unnoticed by those of us on shore.

Merchant Navy Day is a chance to change that.

Why do we fly the Red Ensign?

One of the most recognisable symbols of Merchant Navy Day is the Red Ensign, sometimes known as the "Red Duster".

It is the official flag of the UK's commercial shipping fleet and its Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories. On Merchant Navy Day, the flag is flown by councils, organisations, maritime businesses and individuals as a visible mark of respect for merchant seafarers.

The flag represents much more than ships.

It represents the people who sail them; their professionalism, courage, commitment and sacrifice.

When we see the Red Ensign flying today, it is a reminder that there are people working at sea who help keep the country supplied, connected and moving.

A day to remember — and to look forward

Merchant Navy Day is ultimately about past, present and future.

We remember those who served during times of war and never came home.

We recognise the seafarers who are at sea today, often far from their families, continuing a tradition that has been vital to Britain's prosperity for generations.

And we look towards the future of the maritime industry; encouraging new generations to understand the opportunities, responsibilities and importance of careers at sea.

This year, that message is particularly relevant. On Merchant Navy Day 2026, eleven seafarers have been recognised with the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service, celebrating exceptional service, leadership and dedication within the maritime sector.

Their stories remind us that the Merchant Navy is not simply part of Britain's maritime heritage. It is a living, working community that continues to make a difference every day.

So, why does Merchant Navy Day matter?

It matters because it is easy to take the things we rely on for granted.

We see products arriving in shops. We fill our cars with fuel. We order goods online. We expect supplies to be available when we need them.

But much of what reaches us has travelled across the sea first.

Merchant Navy Day reminds us that behind those journeys are skilled people who have chosen a demanding career at sea, people who have served their country in war and continue to serve the nation in peacetime.

It reminds us that remembrance is not only about looking back. It is also about recognising people today and ensuring their contribution is not forgotten tomorrow.

Remember. Recognise. Respect.

So, today, take a moment to look for the Red Ensign.

If you see one flying from a town hall, port, vessel, workplace or landmark, remember what it represents.

Remember the thousands who lost their lives.

Recognise the seafarers who continue to work at sea today.

And respect the families, communities and maritime organisations that support them.

On Merchant Navy Day, we remember those who kept Britain afloat — and we thank those who continue to do so.

We remember. We recognise. We salute the Merchant Navy.

I have included a photo of my Grandad recovering from shrapnel wounds in 1915, when his ship (HMS Pegasus) was sunk by the Germans. He was honourably discharged and went on to serve in the Merchant Navy in the convoys in both wars.

My father is also pictured above, he serve in the Atlantic convoys in the Merchant Navy from 1939.

If work is so good for people, why have you increased the taxes on jobs (given that taxes on booze, fags, petrol etc are all meant to damp down the demand for these items)?
