* AlphabetWars! *

The end and time for sleeeeeep... or Minecraft

2012-01-30T09:21:00.000+00:00

...almost 3 months of furious counting later and the votes are finally in for the last round of AlphabetWars.

'Zzzzz' (aka sleep) won by 9 votes to 4.

uhm....

I do apologise for the total lack of activity in the past couple of months. A combination of other commitments, projects and to be brutally honest, apathy, left old ABWars like the quirky but quiet kid, fairly ignored in the corner.

The .com domain is due for renewal soon and even though it was a good run and some fun was had, ultimately this format did not work quite as I had intended, commercially, so it is not my intention to continue with it. (If you'd like to purchase the domain/the site itself at a very reasonable price just get in touch).

For those of you who are interested in...:

...one of the projects is a Minecraft blog here: http://gettingwood.blogspot.com/
Please follow and comment and all the good stuff over there.
Unlike ABWars, it is a 'proper' blog, featuring anecdotes, observation, opinion, thoughts, news and showcasing... eh... and more!

Finally, thanks for your participation in AlphabetWars and apologies for dropping the ball for so long.
We did have a bit of fun, which is one intention that can be squarely ticked at least.

Round 27: Zzzzz...

2011-11-09T15:45:00.001+00:00

Yu-Gi-Oh! made a valiant effort in Round 26, but Wonder Woman came up trumps once again.

Final Round:

Wonder Woman

...statuesque.

vs.

Zzzzz...

...mmm... sleep.

For the last time this 'cycle', vote your preference between Wonder Woman and 'Zzzzz...' (or sleep as it's better known).

Round 26: No, Yu!

2011-11-03T21:36:00.000+00:00

So 'normals' (debatable) lost out to nerds in Round 25 and X-Factor was severely trounced by Wonder Woman.

This round it's time to divide and conquer you geeks...

Wonder Woman

Interpretive essay? I'll read it later...

vs.

Yu-Gi-Oh!

Gotta collect quite a lot of 'em.

As always, vote your favourite - Wonder Woman or Yu-Gi-Oh! in the comments.

Round 25: What is this 'X' Factor?

2011-10-27T17:34:00.001+01:00

At almost treble the votes, Wonder Woman boioioing jumped all over Van Halen and lassoed 'em good in Round 24.

Wonder Woman

Great Hera!

vs.

X-Factor

I can tell by some of the pixels...

Vote Wonder Woman or X-Factor in the comments below.

Round 24: Makes you Wonder.

2011-10-13T15:59:00.000+01:00

Another close one in Round 23, with one vote in it between Understanding and Van Halen, and the rockers coming out triumphant.

Van Halen

Is my instamatic camera small enough though?

vs.

Wonder Woman

Hottest Wonder Woman ever.

Vote your preference, Van Halen or Wonder Woman below.

Round 23: I ain't the worst that you've seen.

2011-10-05T18:20:00.001+01:00

Interesting in Round 22 how many went for Understanding over Television.
...and it won - by two votes. Reaffirms my faith in the human race... a bit.

Understanding

Understand? Not bloody likely.

vs.

Van Halen

Jump!... for my love... oh wait...

So vote your favourite between Steve Coogan and the Pointer Sis.. no... eh...
Understanding and Van Halen in the comments below.

Round 22: How does it work again?

2011-09-30T15:46:00.004+01:00

So Round 21 turned out to be a fair fight between Robots and Television. With only one vote in it, revered TV came out on top.

This one's for all the students back at school:

Television

Seen it...

vs.

Understanding

I don't even... get it.

If you understand what to do, you'll know where to vote...
Television or Understanding in the comments.

Round 21: What's on the box?

2011-09-18T14:33:00.002+01:00

No love for the Smurfs? Admittedly Pirate Robots (especially Pirate) arrr better, and the CGI movie has tainted their otherwise cute name, but not one vote in Round 20 for the little blue creatures?

So be it...

Robots

The return of Robot Unicorn - yay.

vs.

Television

...rules the nation

As always, vote Robots or Television below.

Round 20: Arrrr

2011-09-14T15:14:00.002+01:00

Robots beat a thus far competent QWERTY in Round 20.

Dakota suggested 'Robot Pirate', so let's go with that for this round.

Dakota runs a Hello Kitty fan site here,
filled with all kinds of weird and wonderful HK stuff.

Robots

Arrrr

vs.

Smurfs

A kazillion of 'em.

Vote Robots or Smurfs below.

Round 19: Robotime

2011-09-11T15:52:00.002+01:00

In Round 18, QWERTY scraped through by one vote over Planking.

Nice one QWERTY.

This time:

QWERTY

Dusty

vs.

Robots

In 'disguise'

K, everyone, vote QWERTY or Robots below.

Round 18: What a planker

2011-09-06T15:38:00.002+01:00

Haha! QWERTY proved very worthy against Ninja in Round 17.

This makes me very happy. Apparently unstoppable contestants do get on my goat after a few rounds.

On with the next battle:

(*edit: perhaps it's because I have been considering going
reverse alphabetical for the next cycle or because
I haven't woken up properly or was just too excited about
Ninja being knocked out, but I chose a
'p' word instead of what should have been
the 'r' round and we've gone backwards for this one.

Woops, never mind.)

QWERTY

peck peck... 15 wpm

vs.

Planking*

That guy sure can plank!

Round 17: Is the keyboard mightier than the sword?

2011-09-01T18:38:00.001+01:00

Time for a bit of honesty.
The reason Round 16 has been open so long was in the vain hope that a flood of votes for Pistachio Nuts might appear and Ninja could be toppled from his current run.
But I'll admit it, Ninja is tough. Almost too good for this point in the competition, but we shall strive on regardless.

Ninja

In denim jeans?

vs.

QWERTY

asdfg

Vote Ninja or QWERTY in the comment box below.
(And may I remind you of the requirement of a keyboard to do so. ; P)

Round 16: Nuts

2011-08-15T17:21:00.001+01:00

Apologies for the lengthy absence due to technical difficulties.
ABWars HQ has been fully revamped and we're eager to get stuck back in to the battles.

Only Aaron M. Gipson was sophisticated and learned enough to vote for Ontology in Round 15. The rest of you shallow types opted for the admittedly more kick-ass Ninja.

We're going to need something extra special to be shot of this wily combatant.

Ninja

Nnnnnnnyah!

vs.

Pistachio Nuts

'Moreish'

Vote in the comments as usual...

Ninja or Pistachio Nuts

Round 15: Are ninjas an epistemological certainty?

2011-08-03T17:07:00.003+01:00

At a solid 2 to 1, Ninja beat Luigi in Round 14.

Time to get abstract all up in this place.

Ninja

Nurrrd

vs.

Ontology

No, YOU!

Vote for Ninja or Ontology in the comments, thanks!

Round 14: Ninjas go 'pew'?

2011-07-22T15:08:00.001+01:00

Marshmallows did well up against Luigi, but not well enough I'm sorry to announce.

I have a feeling, Luigi, that this may be your last round with us.

Luigi

Do the Luigi?

vs.

Ninja

Lazer Ninja wowwww!

As always, vote for your preference between Luigi and Ninja in the comments.

Mid-way Round Up

2011-07-18T19:05:00.001+01:00

As the Round 13 battle between Luigi and Marshmallows rages on, let's take a breather for a moment and recap this round so far.

Followers can reminisce and noobs can get an idea of how this whole silliness works.

Round 1:

America vs. Allen Keys

Round 2:

Allen Keys (not pictured(?)) vs. The Bangles (sort of pictured)

Round 3:

Allen Keys vs. The Can-can

Round 4:

The Can-can vs. Donkey Kong

Round 5:

Donkey Kong vs. Eggs

Round 6:

Donkey Kong vs. Fender Guitars

Round 7:

Round 9:

Round 10:

House vs. Jupiter

Round 11:

Round 12:

Knight Rider vs. Luigi

Which leaves us with...

Round 13:

Luigi vs. Marshmallows

So, vote Luigi or Marshmallows if you haven't yet,
or leave a friendly complimentary comment below.

Round 13 - Time to mallow out a bit.

2011-07-13T16:13:00.002+01:00

It was close until the end for Round 12, before Luigi soared into the lead and won over Knight Rider.

At this point I need to address a complaint received during said round from T. Roger Thomas.

Dear Sir,

It has come to my attention that the image above is of Kit, the talking car, not Michael Knight the actual "Knight Rider" played so brilliantly by actor David Hasselhoff.

Would a photo of a piece of equipment on the Caped Crusader's utility belt be an adequate representation of Batman? Certainly not.

Sincerely,

Comic Book Guy

We wholeheartedly apologise for this oversight, please accept this picture of Hasselhoff as a good will gesture.

As requested by T. Roger Thomas.

With that unpleasant business out of the way, let's proceed with Round 13.

Luigi

Accurate

vs.

Marshmallows

Artymallows

Vote up your favourite between Luigi and Marshmallows in the comments.

It's-a Round 12!

2011-07-07T16:44:00.001+01:00

Right, so Knight Rider pretty much walked Round 11 and left Jupiter out in space somewhere.

Not too shocking I guess, but how will it fare this time around?

Knight Rider

D-dun, d-dun, d-dun.

vs.

Luigi

It's-a him, Luigi.

Vote for your preference between Knight Rider or Luigi in the comments.

Round 11 - SatNav ain't what it used to be.

2011-06-30T17:31:00.002+01:00

Round 10 was pretty close, but Jupiter trumped House by a couple of votes.

What was missing from the pic of Jupiter?
I removed the unsightly moon Ganymede from the shot.

See?

This round:

JupIter

Big. Round.

vs.

Knight Rider

Small and roundy? What?

So vote for Jupiter or Knight Rider in the comments.

Round 10: Planetary

2011-06-28T16:03:00.004+01:00

Cool as Igloo was, Round 9 saw House as the winner by a single vote.

We need something BIG to beat this guy...

House

Very pretty

vs.

Jupiter

Somewhat prettier

*bonus vote to anyone who knows what's missing from the Jupiter photo.
(I'm looking at you Astronomy Pirate)

Vote House or Jupiter in the comments.

Winner faces 'K' next round.

Round 9: House vs. type of house.

2011-06-22T12:04:00.001+01:00

House M.D. and diagnostic crack-team went through the usual unnerving twists and turns and sheer panic in diagnosing Gibson Guitars. In the end it was an incurable case of woodworm and they decided to pull the plug.

House now faces a kind of house... kind of...

House

Apple or orange?

vs.

Igloo

Pretty cool, eh?

Cast your vote for House or Igloo in the comments.

Round 8: It's Lupus!

2011-06-16T10:59:00.002+01:00

Gibson Guitars whupped Fenders by a whole third more votes.

Nobody even guessed at the quotes from the captions. Wayne's World and Spinal Tap respectively.
Useless, the lot of you!

This round we have:

Gibson Guitars

All the way to eleven...

vs.

House

I'm sorry, but you have lupus.

Vote your preference, Gibson Guitars or House in the comments.

Round 7: Apples

2011-06-12T17:37:00.002+01:00

In spite of Lost.in.Idaho winning two extra votes for Donkey Kong, it's a surprising result of Fender Guitars on top by the smallest of margins.

Lost... blogs wittily at "My Own Private Idaho", check it.

...and in honour of his knowledge (Round 6 was an 'F' on Les Paul's birthday so I went for Fender. Makes sense in the odd universe that is Alphabet Wars, trust me) and a as a belated bday nod to old Les Paul, we will compare apples with apples this round.

Fender Guitars

There it is - Excalibur

vs.

Gibson Guitars

It's famous for its sustain

You don't need to know anything about guitars - just...

...pick a favourite between Fender or Gibson and post in the comments.

Also, name the movies the caption quotes come from.
Bonus vote for each one..

Donkey Kong Eats Eggs for Breakfast? Round 6

2011-06-09T15:07:00.004+01:00

Apologies for the hiatus, staff at ABWars HQ took Round 5 a little too seriously and the tension got to everybody in the office. Sheer mayhem as eggs and barrels and bananas were flung hither and tither all week until I put a stop to the purchase orders for said products and the outcome was decided using our more reliable method of vote counting.

So, finally the results are in and yolk/banana mush substance has been cleaned off every surface and hair-do in the office.

Donkey Kong smashed those Eggs at almost 2 to 1.

On with the next round:

Donkey Kong

When advised to get 'some fresh air' it's a nice idea to leave the video game behind.

vs.

Fender Guitars

If it was 'G' I'd have picked a different guitar.

...first in with why gets 2 bonus votes counted towards their choice
and a shout-out next round.

As always, vote your preference in the comments - Donkey Kong or Fender Guitars.

Winner will face 'G' next round.

Round 5: So eggsilarating.

2011-05-31T11:45:00.003+01:00

Generally Disgruntled is a weird one - he suggests Donkey Kong and then asks can he vote for Diddy Kong instead.

No Mr. Disgruntled, you may not.

Regardless, Donkey Kong won against The Can-can.

Also, I must pop over and follow Mrs. Pickle before she freaks out.

...but for now, on with business:

Donkey Kong

Problem?

vs.

Eggs

You can't make an omelette without breaking a barrel flinging ape...

or, eh... no, that's not right.

Vote Donkey Kong or Eggs in the comments.

Winner faces an 'F' word next round.
