HAPPY BARON BLISS DAY TO ALL BELIZEANS AT HOME AND ABROAD

As I sit in front of the computer this morning, it is raining outside. I am not in Belize. Nor am I in Mexico. I have now adopted a third country and while my stay is only for a while, I am savoring the time I am allowed to spend with my daughter and granddaughter in the USA.

However, this post is not about me. It is just to wish all those who today celebrate in the name of Belize's greatest benefactor's name a HAPPY BARON BLISS DAY.

We wish to thank God that this man of Portuguese decent, came into our Belizean waters and without even setting foot on Belizean soil saw a place he could love. And love he did. For at his death, the country of Belize became sole heir to millions of dollars of which only the interest could be used as seen fit but the government.

Hence we have hospitals, parks and community centers in the name of Baron Bliss.

God bless his soul and keep Belize safe!

TROPICAL STORM ALEX SOAKS BELIZE

BELIZE CITY – Tropical Storm Alex made landfall late Saturday on Belize's coast, where hundreds of tourists and residents fled low-lying islands ahead of the storm's arrival.

Besides Belize, Alex's torrential rains were drenching Guatemala and Mexico's resort-studded Caribbean coast, where beachgoers were warned to stay out of the water because of rough surf.

The storm, with maximum sustained winds of about 60 mph (95 kph), was expected to weaken as it pushed its way across the Yucatan Peninsula then regain strength later Sunday as it entered the Gulf of Mexico. Alex appeared headed west of the massive oil spill in parts of the Gulf, but meteorologists warned that a storm's track can quickly change.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Alex was centered about 20 miles (30 kms) northwest of Belize City late Saturday evening.

A tropical storm warning was in effect for Belize and Mexico's entire Caribbean coastline up to Cancun.

Belize officials opened storm shelters in the island tourist resort of San Pedro, as some 1,400 people fled for the mainland by plane and by boat. Torrential downpours and heavy winds were reported on offshore islands Saturday afternoon.

Shelters also opened in Belize City, where motorists formed long lines at gas stations and shoppers stocked up on water, canned food and other emergency supplies amid sporadic rain.

Rough seas halted maritime traffic, and Belize City Mayor Zenaida Moya-Flowers went on national radio to urge boaters to make for safe harbor. Nevertheless, she said, emergency plans were well under way and "we are prepared."

A storm surge of 3-5 feet (1-1.5 meters) was expected along the northern coast and offshore islands, national emergency coordinator Noreen Fairweather said.

Moderate rain was falling along Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and Quintana Roo state authorities said choppy waves made it too dangerous to swim — but otherwise the storm did not pose a significant threat to tourist areas such as Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

State Public Safety director Miguel Ramos Real said 25 fisherman were evacuated and 17 navy personnel were brought to the mainland from a base on Banco Chinchorro, an atoll off the Mexican coast. Three shelters were opened, and ports were closed to small craft.

Meteorologists predict that Alex will likely lose strength as it passes over the Yucatan Peninsula, before picking up steam again over the Gulf of Mexico.

The latest Hurricane Center forecast puts Alex on a track that would take it through the southwestern Gulf and toward landfall around Veracruz or Tamaulipas state in Mexico — possibly as a hurricane.

Hurricane forecaster Jack Bevens said for now, the storm is not expected to hit the spill that has fouled the Gulf with somewhere between 69 million gallons (261 million liters) and 132 million gallons (500 million liters) of crude.

He noted, however, that it's too early to say with certainty exactly where Alex will go.

The storm has raised concerns over what might happen to containment efforts if oil company British Petroleum is forced to abandon the area for a while. An armada of ships is working in the Gulf.

A cap has been placed over the blown-out undersea well and it is carrying some of the oil to a surface ship where it is being collected. Some of the oil is being brought to the surface and burned. Other ships are drilling two relief wells, projected to be done by August, and are the best hope to stop the leak.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, two storms were far offshore late Saturday night and did not pose an immediate threat to land.

Once-powerful Celia weakened from a hurricane to a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph), the hurricane center said. The storm should fall apart by Sunday.

Darby, which was also a powerful hurricane, has also weakened to a tropical storm. It's center is about 305 miles (490 kilometers) south-southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico.

ESCALATING CRIME

The crime rate in Belize City has pummeted over the past months and I guess the question in everybodies minds is "What is the Government doing about it?"

Everyday someone´s daughter or son is murdered cold heartedly and it leaves many families torn to shreds because there seems to be no justice forthcoming.

I lost my husband in Chetumal, eight months ago. He was the victim of a vicious execution in our home. Today the justice department of Chetumal is still no closer to solving the case. So, I know exactly how all these Belizeans who are losing their family members feel when they can get no justice.

What has the world come to? Why are we living in such crude, blood thirsty environment? Why has the world suddenly become a place of blood washing the streets, pavements and our hearts?

I think it is time for us to stand up and demand that justice be served. It is time to see a change in Belize.

Mr.Prime Minister, please take time to see what is happening and get the different bodies involved with justice to do their share so that we can re claim this country before we lose it to crime without punishment. lISTEN TO OUR PLEA. DO YOU JOB AND MAKE THIS ONCE MORE THE LAND OF THE FREE.

The world's top billionaires, Bill Gates and Carlos Slim, will team up with the government of Spain in a 150-million dollar health initiative for poor people in Central America, including Belize, and Mexico, it was announced here on Monday.

Funds for the "2015 Meso-American Health Initiative" will be shared equally by the three contributors and will go over the next five years to improve maternal health, nutrition, vaccination, anti-dengue and anti-malaria campaigns in the region.

The initiative was announced here Monday by Gates, Slim, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Spain's Princess Cristina.

In addition to Belize, the health initiative will be put to work in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.

Gates said it was the first time his US-based Bill & Melinda Foundation has teamed up with Mexico's Carlos Slim Institute, but probably not the last.

Telecom mogul Slim, 50, topped Forbes magazine's world's richest list this year with a 53.5 billion dollar fortune. He bumped Gates, 54, to second place with 53 billion dollars.

GARBAGE PROBLEM IN COROZAL

Returned to Corozal on Friday to fine garbage thrown all over my garden. "What the heck?" I thought. "Much be my neighbour´s dog messing with the garbage." However after taking a walk into town yesterday in 68 degrees of wing and drizzle, I realize there was more garbage thrown around in other areas on Ninth Avenue, which is the highway in andout of Belize here in the North. I also later heard some one mention that the garbage situation was a problem in Corozal now as the Town Board and the Garbage Collecting Company were not getting along.

Now come on Mr. Mayor!!! If you will have a fight with this company you need to have a plan B already in place. You need to go back to the system before we had the garbage company!!! YES YOUR TOWN BOARD WORKERS IN THE TRUCK need to get up and go out and pick up the garbage. This is the time of the year when tourist start coming into Corozal for the medical work they do for the next two months. Lets let them see a clean Corozal, please!!!

Arrest made for murder of Corozal teacher

One bit of good news that got lost in the voluminous number of court stories, is that Corozal police have made a major break in the case of Javier Castillo’s murder.

Castillo, a former U.D.P. Councillor and at the time of his death, was teaching at Escuela Mejico, was laid to rest this past Saturday. Late last week police detained the man believed to have committed the bloody homicide and he is expected to be charged with Murder. According to Superintendent Miguel Guzman, the officer in charge of Corozal police, their investigations have yielded a motive and have ruled out robbery.

Basically, from the investigation the evidence indicated that Mr. Hernandez was at the residence—we have placed him at the residence—and he has confirmed that he was at the residence. As it is right now we have sufficient evidence that indicates that Mr. Hernandez and Mr. Castillo were together prior to his death.”

Castillo was found dead in his home on October third. He had been strangled with a fan wire and his abdomen was slashed.

UB teachers and students march in defiance of wage freeze

The heat associated with the capital today was not only emanating from the high temperatures, but also from the University of Belize. During break, students, faculty and staff converged at the gymnasium in a unified battle mode that grew hostile in the afternoon sun. The university’s employees, who had already heard that the UB board was freezing salary increments for the next three years, were joined today by the students who are fearing a proposed increase in tuition. The consultation process for that proposed tuition increase never got off the ground and that potential financial strain is what’s making U.B. a place the students don’t want to be. The country’s only university is rapidly growing and to meet the development demands under a strained budget, the board decided to withhold the increases. But budgetary constraints were not on the minds of the gathering at the gym. A Pro-Tem Committee organized by the faculty and staff referred to the board as lacking professionalism while implementing an unjustifiable wage freeze at a time of economic downturn. News Five’s Duane Moody attended the standoff at the U.B. gym in the capital.

I am looking at it and I am just thinking it’s not even logical for them to slap me in the face like that.”

“They are not acting on good fate and the meeting that we had, I brought that to the board. I was asking them to please call this emergency meeting to dialogue as they had promised with board. The faculty and staff would like to be treated respectfully by the board. Proper consultation with due process is necessary. A press release of board meetings was made public and schedule for October fifteenth 2009 after the Pro-Tem committee of faculty and staff had requested an emergency board meeting and was denied. The Pro-Tem had been told that a meeting would not be possible until October thirtieth 2009. According to the press release that came out over the weekend, it says as such an extraordinary meeting of the board has been scheduled for Thursday, fifteenth October 2009. So we had to call an emergency meeting for the faculty and staff on Friday to inform them that the board did not see it urgent to meet to call an emergency board meeting. However, immediately after they knew that we had an emergency staff and faculty meeting, this press release came out. We are just a Pro-Tem committee representing the faculty and staff. The Pro-Tem Committee does not give the direction of the plan of action so we’ll have to call the faculty and staff together and the faculty and staff will then mandate the next plan of action.”

The student body and the faculty and staff are up in arms with the U.B. Board.

Victim Kathy Rosen almost dies from blood loss.

On Thursday, October 8th, Kathy Rosen was trying to finish a chemistry lab at UCLA. Another student in the class, Damon Thompson stabbed her five times with a six inch kitchen knife, he had brought with him that day, and then slashed her throat. The assault took place in front of 30 people. Thompson then dropped the knife and walked away. Students and a teacher rushed to her aid as a great quantity of blood spilled out from the wounds. Her eyes rolled back in her head and she turned pale as they applied pressure to the wounds.

Lab classes at UCLA often assign people to work in teams, and Kathy had the misfortune to be teamed up with Damon Thompson, a native of Belize. Belize is one of the most backward nations in Central America and it’s very difficult to believe that Thompson with his low forehead and prognathous jaw was even remotely qualified to attend a quality university in the US. No doubt some poor White kid had to be kicked aside to make room for this creature.

To add insult to injury, news has come out that Thompson had shown signs of severe mental illness, accusing his professors of saying derogatory things about him during exams even though no one else heard any of the remarks that he claimed to hear. One news article notes “A UCLA professor who taught the student accused of slashing a female classmate’s throat last week said Saturday that he told a university administrator 10 months ago that he had concerns about the student’s mental health, but strict federal privacy laws prevent UCLA officials from disclosing how they handled the issue. Stephen Frank, an associate professor in the university’s history department, met the suspect, undergraduate student Damon Thompson, when he enrolled in the instructor’s Western civilization class late last year, Frank said in an interview. Frank said he grew concerned about Thompson in mid-December 2008, after the student sent several e-mails complaining that classmates sitting around him had been disruptive and made offensive comments to him while he was taking a written exam… University officials have acknowledged that ‘Thompson was known to our student affairs office prior to the incident,’ but could not disclose information about the suspect, citing privacy laws.”

Why is it that evidence that a Black quota-student from Belize is crazy, paranoid and possibly a danger to the people around him is covered up by strict privacy laws, while everyone else in America has their communications routinely spied on by Homeland Security?

Another article reports “Thompson pulled out a knife and began stabbing the victim for no apparent reason… Authorities said the victim, identified in court as Katherine Rosen, 20, suffered five stab wounds and a slashed throat. Rosen was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in critical condition but has been steadily improving, doctors said.”

So an American student was nearly killed because of a policy to bring Third World primitives into the US. One can only hope that the victim sues the heck out of UCLA authorities for doing nothing about the complaints and evidence that Damon Thompson was profoundly mentally ill.

Perhaps it’s time to consider if ANY Third World people should be let into the US. Third World immigrants lower the pay rate for jobs from the fast food service to the high tech industry, where Hindu ersatz high tech workers are hired regardless of how marginal their education or intelligence may be. If the United States wants to maintain a high standard of living, we need to stop all Third World immigration, which invariably brings crime, lower wages, a huge tax burden and less competency in the high tech world.

A Halo Over Moscow

And you thought rainbows were cool. A few days ago, a mysterious cloud shaped like a halo appeared over Moscow, and the buzz has yet to break.

We're the first to admit that a photograph of the heavenly cloud appears to be photoshopped. It's just so...perfect. But meterologists have spoken up and said the cloud wasn't digitally altered. However, it wasn't exactly what it appeared to be, either.

When the cloud initially formed, some UFO enthusiasts declared it to be a "true mystery." Some even compared it to the giant spaceship hovering over Earth in the movie "Independence Day." Reality quickly dashed any predictions of an alien invasion. An article from the Daily Mail explains that the "luminous ring-shaped cloud" was simply an optical effect.

An official spokesperson for Moscow's weather department said, "Several fronts have been passing through Moscow recently, there was an intrusion of the Arctic air too, the sun was shining from the west — this is how the effect was produced."

The cloud loomed last week, but the searches are still soaring. Lookups on "halo cloud" and "moscow cloud" are both booming, and a video clip has garnered hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube.

Nacionalización. La Cámara de Representantes de Belice aprobó ayer una iniciativa de reforma presentada por el Primer Ministro Dean Barrow para tomar el control de la empresa de telecomunicaciones de Belice, BTL (Telemedia). Sus acciones serán puestas a la venta y sus propietarios serán compensados. El gobierno argumentó que Telemedia se encontraba bajo control de Lord Ashcroft (empresario y vicepresidente del Partido Conservador del Reino Unido), había logrado acuerdos ilegales con el gobierno anterior del PUP, en especial el “Acuerdo de Adaptación”, se había convertido en un monopolio de telefonía e Internet, había bloqueado el servicio de voz por Internet, había conseguido ventajas fiscales y sus tarifas están entre las más altas del Caribe.
La empresa condenó la medida y la calificó de inconstitucional. La Oposición criticó la decisión del gobierno. En los últimos meses el gobierno y la compañía se habían enfrascado en varios procesos judiciales. El Senado sesionará hoy para votar la reforma y se estima que mañana sería promulgada. Reformas. En la misma sesión de la Cámara de Representantes, el gobierno presentó 3 iniciativas. La primera regulará el depósito sobre botellas de bebidas y permitirá establecer medidas que impidan que los envases dañen el medio ambiente. La segunda y la tercera son reformas en materia procesal que permitirán que las declaraciones de los testigos sean admitidas como evidencia ante la corte aún cuando estén ausentes, bajo el temor de que su vida o su seguridad estén en peligro (News 5).

Salud. El Fondo de Inversión Social lanzará el 26 de agosto el proyecto para la construcción de una clínica que proporcionará servicios de salud de calidad a los residentes de Benque Viejo del Carmen y áreas circunvecinas. El proyecto costará BZ$725 mil (US$ 362.5 mil) y será financiado por la Iniciativa de Deuda de la Mancomunidad Británica y el Gobierno de Belice, a través de un préstamo del Banco de Desarrollo del Caribe (CDB) (Love FM).
Turismo. El Consejo de Turismo de Belice (BTB) anunció ayer los 7 ganadores de las becas anuales para estudios en turismo (Love FM).

Belize moves to take over private BTL phone firm

BELIZE CITY -- Belize's prime minister has submitted a bill to congress to take over a controlling share of leading phone carrier Belize Telemedia Ltd., known as BTL.

BTL recently won a $38.5 million judgment against the government relating to the breach of an agreement signed with the previous administration. Current officials say that deal was illegal and have refused to honor it.

The lower house of congress approved the proposal to take over 94 percent of the company's shares, while paying compensation.

Officials hope the bill will be approved by the Senate and signed into law on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow says the government doesn't want to hold onto the shares, and will offer them to small investors.
