For Mother's Day this year, I was

invited to spend an Evening with

Chase Whale and Well Go

Entertainment. I was treated to a

lovely story of a father doing his

best to take care of a young daughter

with Leukemia. It was poignant,

heartfelt, and filled with bone

crunching, back breaking action, as

well as knife wielding homicidal

maniacs, public shootouts, bus

flipping, window smashing, cellphone

miscommunication, human trafficking,

and amazing Hong-Kong/Bangkok action!

Kill Zone 2 starring Tony Jaa will be

available this Friday On Demand and

in cinemas, and is well worth it.

Vanilla Ice to Star in Remake of “Cool As Ice.”

<img src="http://www.westseattlefunblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/vanilla-ice.jpeg"

LOS ANGELES-“It’s been twenty years, boyeee! Time for a remake, you know what I’m sayin!?” Robbie Van Winkle, aka 1990s heartthrob rapper Vanilla Ice, is sitting with me poolside at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
The rapper turned actor turned real estate investor turned reality TV celebrity is talking about the multimillion deal he just inked to remake his 1991 hip-hop megaflop “Cool As Ice.” The original, also starring Van Winkle, was made for a modest $6Million but only grossed a little north of a $1million. “It was a different time back then, you know what I’m sayin?” reflects Van Winkle, sipping on a Midori smoothie. “I think the audience today is ready for the true power of ‘Da Iceman.’”
<img src="http://www.x-entertainment.com/pics/cool1.jpg"

He’s referring to his new deal, which is worth more than $100million that he’s been paid to write, direct, and star in a remake of “Cool As Ice,” as well as a new soundtrack, cartoon show, video game, and action figures. Van Winkle anticipates that this franchise will be “Bigger Than Mother F**kin’ Spiderman” by the end of 2011.
<img src="http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2008/04/14/vanilla_ice_narrowweb__300x415,0.jpg"

The last film, currently listed as #73 on Internet Movie Databases’ “Bottom 100” featured camera work by famed director of photography Janusz Kaminski, who later went on to lens “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan.” When I asked if Kaminski would be returning to lens the remake, Van Winkle tersely replied that he would be doing it himself this time. Said Van Winkle “Yeah, his career has gone downhill since he shot with Ice.”

Honestly, I was excited going into the film, but nothing could prepare me for the film itself, which was equal parts humor and horror.
The film, if you catch the title, is about a threesome (sometimes foursome) of elderly cretins that live on the outskirts of civilization. They spend the film smashing the cast offs of society, whether it’s rubbish, old appliances, or even the human bodies. Once can sit and argue about the artistic merits of its Dogme 95 influence and Cinema Verite, but let’s be honest. It’s just ugly. All the characters (with the exception of one) are disgusting, vile, and boorish. The locations, mostly back alleys, side streets, and ruined homes, look awful. The props, costumes, and makeup are awful looking. The movie, shot with natural and available light on the long dormant VHS format, looks terrible. What’s amazing about Trash Humpers is that was the intention by filmmaker Harmony Korine and his team all along. It was intended to be an artifact, something to be discovered fifty generations from now so that people in the future could see how society in the twenty-first century is depraved. Much like we now watch The Great Train Robbery and Birth of a Nation with quiet reverence, the students of the year 2300 will watch Trash Humpers and see what life was truly like for citizens in turn of the century America. They’ll see the elderly gyrate their bodies on trash cans. They’ll see small children deface babies. They’ll see Siamese twins forced to make pancakes and then eat them with dish soap in lieu of syrup. The film is a thinly veiled metaphor for the fall of suburban consumer culture, where perfectly good items are discarded and destroyed. The amazing thing about this film is that you literally have no idea what’s going to happen next. Unlike the current crop of by-the-numbers popcorn films that infest multiplexes this time of year, there’s no “setup” or “payoff.” No “good guys” or “bad guys.” I can tell you right now this is the only film of the summer that will have baby dolls being dragged on the back of bicycles. What’s exciting are the characters that occupy the frame, and after watching this film, I can tell you that people will be talking about this one for years to come.

Iron Man 2 Vs. The film, shot on old-school VHS tape, features the antics of three elderly people who go around Nashville…humping trash cans.

Downey’s film, the aforementioned Iron Man 2, will feature explosions, computer generated violence, and a great score. It was shot on 35mm film, unlike ”Trash Humpers,” but Downey now claims that he’s going to go “Bang some heads at Paramount to try to get this sucker in 3-D, or somethin’.”
It seems though, that ”Iron Man 2” has a clear advantage over the indie film, in that it’s a recognized brand, with over 40 years of comic books, cartoons, toys, and a 2008 hit movie. It is also opening on 4,000 more theaters than ”Trash Humpers.”
“What I’m concerned about here is the dark horse, the David vs. Goliath,” said Downey.
”Iron Man 2” and “Trash Humpers” both bow on May 7, 2010.

New Gun Battle Movie Starring My Daughter.

I recently made a fictional action film with my daughter Piper to demonstrate the use of sound effects
in the story telling process of a film.

Avatar: The Robbie Ryan Review

By now, there have been billions of column inches, both real and virtual, dedicated to the film Avatar. It is the most crazy, hyped up, prophetic feature film in my memory, at least.

I was a bit young when Star Wars came out, but I'm sure it's similar.
When I first saw trailers and promotion for this film, I just kept seeing blue people and weird CG forests. Like many filmgoers, I saw a bit of spectacle, a bit of explosions, but it didn't really mean anything to me, because I was mostly seeing it on my flat, tube, analogue TV set in short snippets.
My belief was not suspended. Sorry, Fox.

So, the movie came out, and people started getting really excited.
It still didn't look good to me, so I chilled out and read the reviews.
They were good, really, really, good. Upon seeing it in London, writer/actor Simon Pegg called it a "game changer." Since he and I share equal vehemence for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, I thought, "OK, Maybe."

A couple of weeks ago, I watched the Star Trek reboot for the first time, and emailed my friend, Ilram Choi who had fight coordinated for my film Kung Fu Girls Club and then went on to do movies like Transformers, Revenge of The Fallen, G Force, and Star Trek.
He told me in his email that I absolutely had to see Avatar. He went on to tell me that he had done about 70% of the movement for the aliens, and even got an acting credit as "The Basketball Avatar" at the beginning. My resolve was starting to crumble. I had to go see this film.

So, with 12 bucks in hand and my favorite son (now 8) in tow, I went to the movies on a Saturday afternoon, to see what the "Pocahontas Story with Blue Aliens" was about. I have to tell you, I have been a fan of 3D cinema and comics since I discovered a book called "Amazing 3D" in the early 80s. I have subsequently gone to see every 3D movie I could, including "Spacehunter," "Spy Kids 3D," and "Sharkboy and Lava Girl."
All amusing, yes, but this was the real thing. Finally.
I wanted 3D TV back in the 80s, when it was impossible. Now that it's close, I'm split. But anyway, on to the theatrical experience that is Avatar.
So I put on the plastic 3D glasses, watched stupid trailers for stupid 3D movies yet to be released, and got ready for something.
The Fox 2D vanity card sequence started, which got me thinking...why haven't they redone this in 30 years? Universal and Sony have, and Warner Bros. would do something cool like a blue WB logo. Not Fox. Oh, well.
The movie starts. No titles. Cool. We open in space, teeny bit of exposition. One thing that I dig about Cameron is that he sets up these worlds at the beginning, like he did in Aliens and The Abyss that are set in whatever time they're set in, but the characters don't care. Things like space travel, hypersleep, and cloning are so old hat to the people in the film, that when the story shifts and the truly fantastic starts to happen, the audience is along for the ride.
It's what good science fiction is about, and that's cool.
I'm not going to go into the plot and tell you what the setup is, you probably already know. I will tell you that as a filmmaker and a filmgoer, I am as jaded and raspy as they come. I watched that film with my arms crossed, thinking: "Okay Jimmy, whatcha got?"

Every frame in that movie, whether practical, CG, composite, or whatever, felt real. Felt incredibly real. It was a 3D movie where you didn't notice the 3D after the first couple of minutes.
The storyline is conventional, but the storytelling is not. The entire time I'm watching the film, all I can think of in my mind is,
"How the F*&k did JC do this?"
Every shot in the film is breathtaking. The acting is understated, once again, there's a been there done that quality with most of the characters. Their backstories would fill ten other films, but they didn't really clutter them here.
It was, all told, a remarkable theatrical moviegoing experience. One that will be pleasurable on DVD and (3D?) Blu Ray but would be missed if not seen in the proper theatrical setting.
This truly does raise the bar for every major sci-fi/war/action/romance/comedy film that Hollywood will churn out over the next decade, and certainly raises hopes for Battle Angel and Avatar 2:Still Avataring!
Just Kidding.

Update on Ilram

I went to see my friend <Nathan Dietrick> last night and he casually asked my
if I'd visited Ilram Choi's page on imdb.
I replied that I had not, but was very pleased to see that he is working steady
in this year's and next year's major releases in stunts. It's a shame that his latter years he mostly milked the
Kill Bill persona in cheap commercials, but hey, the guy's gotta eat.

As an independent filmmaker, I'm often compared to Quentin Tarantino,

Which is fine, except that he and I are absolutely nothing alike, except that we
both like women fighting each other in full-on Kung Fu Style. He's really done a lot,
I must say, for expanding the audience for Asian movies, with the movies he produces
or "presents" and his track record with his Dragon Dynasty label.
But any filmmaker in the past decade and a half that has any 70s references in his films will automatically be
labelled as a Tarantino follower, which many people seem to enjoy, but I'm a filmmaker, not a cover band.
His new flick, Inglorious Basterds, which has been gestating for some time, could be surprising when it
comes out, namely, because it looks like an actual movie, like The Dirty Dozen, not a modgepodge of winks,
nods, and excessive pop culture references. We will see, but in the meantime, here's the trailer.

It looks like fun, eh? Especially when one of his lead actors is goremeister Eli Roth,

<img src="http://www.24framelove.com/images/uploads/610x.jpg" height="180" width="200"

who also assisted with acting duties in Tarantino's previous effort, Death Proof.
A last surprise, as seen in the trailer, is BJ Novak, who is one of the actors and writers on "The Office.

<img src="http://www.theparamount.com/img/artists/08-5-30-BJ-Novak.jpg"

An arthouse film at the end of summer? If anyone can do it, It's QT.
I'll keep you posted! ;)

The film was cast, we had several setbacks, as is the case in any project,
big or small. We had intended to shoot the film at a high school across from my house, which was wanting to charge thousands
of dollars for rentals and insurance, which we simply didn't have. One of the actor's girlfriends knew the theater director
at a local community college and said we could use the campus free of charge. Music to my ears, friends.

So we showed up the first day, borrowed camera in hand, to shoot what would be my masterpiece (I thought this, anyway.)
I met the actors that I had recruited, although this was the first day I would meet a few of them.
My schedule was pretty arduous. I had scheduled about 10 scenes to be shot in about 5 hours. What this resulted in was
a seemingly endless amount of delays, but actually we were in good shape. Most movies shoot about a scene a day, so this was
really no sweat and we actually ran pretty efficiently.

The clip below is in 2 parts:
Part 1 was shot in a Japanese park in Fort Worth, Texas, about a block from where they shot the Logan's Run finale.
When I had scouted the location, there were no crowds and it was a pleasant, quiet, day. Of course, whenever we showed up to
shoot with Amy Jo and Kelly, it was crazy crowded. The fact that we were able to get a wide shot with them alone is an absolute
miracle. I owe a lot of that to my DP and editor, Mike Nimocks.

Part 2 was our very first scene from our very first day of shooting. We got the wides, closeups, and reverse angles in about 15 minutes,
and after that, we were certain that this shoot was going to be the easiest thing ever, and the rest would be history.
Well, that would prove to be one of the easiest scenes to shoot, but you'll have to wait for another installment.

-Robbie Ryan

Seth Rogen - A Retraction

After hearing that Seth Rogen has turned down an offer from Roland Emmerich, he's allright in my book. I'm a big fan of Foot Fist way,
and the first thing I have to shout out is...What a bad year to release ANOTHER
Mall Cop movie. Although Jeff Goldsmith from Creative Screenwriting called it
the "Lawrence of Arabia" of mall cop movies, it has a lot of elements to me that are uninspiring.
For one, the casting of Seth Rogen as the main character. I think many across the country and the world are
getting Rogenitis, a disease that affects not only comedy fans but other comedy actors that aren't
Seth Rogen. Take a break, please...you're funny. You're a normal guy...we get it. I watched all the trailers and
there is not one scene like "King of The Demo" in Foot Fist or anything like "If there's two things I hate..." from East Bound and Down.
I will pass no further judgement, having not seen the film, but if this proves one thing...stars are not stars...movies are.
Please, let this be your Mallrats. That's a rad looking skateboard, though.

Kung Fu Girls Club Gag Reel

 <img title="Click to play" alt="Video thumbnail.
