Alors que son précédent disque solo, "materials", était le fruit d'un travail de recherche en studio, "solo" démontre avec quelle intelligence Jonas Kocher fait usage de son accordéon en concert. Sa musique porte en elle des contrastes énormes, entre retenue et explosion, comme si cette dualité était inscrite dans l'aller-retour du soufflet. Les alternances de graves, de claquements, de souffles et de sur-aigus construisent une forme parfaitement maîtrisée a l'intérieur de la trame improvisée.

lefolk – weather to shore

lefolk is audio/video artist Leif Folkvord of Grand Rapids, Michigan USA. The material he creates is influenced by a formal education in media arts filtered through the juxtaposition of experiences at his day(night) job as a pilot.

After two full-length albums and the EP “blankscape”, lefolk releases his new work “weather to shore“ on Resting Bell. Consisting of 13 tracks and a complete duration of one hour, “weather to shore“ is a wonderful microsonic sound adventure. The concept of “weather to shore” was based off of stories of shipwrecks in the great lakes region, many of which occured in bad weather. The track titles are names of ships that sank in the various lakes. With that concept in mind you can basically feel the dense and crackling atmosphere on this release. Droning basements layering through the structures like a constant fog. Trickling glitchy sounds reminding me of hail showers. And little melody fractures peeking around like sunlight through a cloud cover after a heavy storm.

Nevertheless “weather to shore” sounds to me like the perfect soundtrack for a lukewarm spring night. And I can see me standing in the outside and holding my face into the cooling evening breeze.

Cecil Taylor, Wadada Leo Smith, Peter Brötzmann, John Hollenbeck, quatro personalidades que em diversos graus têm marcado gerações do jazz ao longo do tempo, destacam-se com especial brilho na programação da 28ª edição do Jazz em Agosto. Elas confirmam a identidade do festival que, desde 1984, retrata tendências e alternativas inovadoras de uma música em permanente evolução. Quatro personalidades que também assumem o significado de gratos retornos ao festival por nele terem actuado: Cecil Taylor, piano solo (1988), Wadada Leo Smith / The Golden Quartet (2001), Peter Brötzmann / Die Like A Dog (2000) e Chicago Tentet (2008), John Hollenbeck / The Claudia Quintet (2006).

No início da 2ª década do Séc. XXI onde cabalmente se manifesta uma pluralidade de estilos e de géneros, também se evidenciam na programação deste ano encontros geracionais de talentos, casos de Ingrid Laubrock Anti-House, Little Women, Luís Lopes Humanization 4tet, Fire!, enquanto a junção de duos The Ex meet Nilssen-Love / Vandermark Duo será um emblema da proximidade histórica e natural do jazz e do rock.

Irradiando do seu palco principal, o anfiteatro ao ar livre, o Jazz em Agosto 2011 desenrola-se em três concertos abrasivos no novo espaço Teatro do Bairro, sito numa área cosmopolita de Lisboa (Bairro Alto), instituindo a atmosfera informal dos clubes tão caros à prática do jazz.

Num tempo, como o de hoje, onde o espólio fílmico documental do jazz prolifera, o Jazz em Agosto 2011 apresenta quatro filmes consonantes com as suas programações: Cecil Taylor: All The Notes de Cristopher Felver, Black February: A Film About Butch Morris de Vipal Monga, Play Your Own Thing / A Story of Jazz In Europe de Julian Benedikt, Femmes Du Jazz / Women In Jazz de Gilles Corre.

A formulação teórica, sempre presente no festival, terá com o reputado crítico americano Bill Shoemaker um aprofundamento sobre a importância de Cecil Taylor - The Worlds of Cecil Taylor.

Sun Ra: Space Is the Place

Avant-garde jazz musician Sun Ra stars in the movie version of his concept album Space Is the Place. Not following a linear plot line, this experimental film is a bizarre combination of social commentary, blaxploitation, science fiction, and concert performance. The opening scene is set in an intergalactic forest, with Sun Ra introducing his plan to use music as salvation for the black community. Back on Earth, he wears a disguise as Sunny Ray, a piano player in a 1940s Chicago strip club who causes an explosion with his sounds. Switching to a scene in a desert, he plays a card game called "The End of the World," with the Overseer (Ray Johnson), who is dressed in white and drives a white Cadillac. Sun Ra pulls out a spaceship card and the Arkestra play the song "Calling Planet Earth" as their spaceship lands in Oakland, CA. Perpetually dressed in sparkling gold robes and headdresses, he sets out to save the black people from oppression. He visits a community center and sets up the Outer Space Employment Agency, occasionally switching back to the desert to continue his game with the Overseer. Eventually, Sun Ra gets kidnapped by two white guys and forced to listen to "Dixie" on headphones, but some kids from the community center save him just in time for the live concert conclusion. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Roy Hargrove is one of today's greatest jazz trumpetists. Mezzo is dedicating an entire evening to this master blower. Live at the New Morning, he plays with his pals Gerald Clayton (piano), Montez Coleman (drums), Danton Boller (bass), and Justin Robinson (alto sax). Now that's some darn good swing! Performing in Montreal ten years before, we find Hargrove at the height of his Cuban period, jamming to Latin rhythms and hard bop with his band, Crisol. Giuseppi Logan, saxofonista alto “desaparecido” há décadas sem deixar rasto, está prestes a regressar ao lado de cá pela mão da editora norte-americana Tompkins Square Records, confirmando as aparições de há um ano no Bowery Poetry Club, em Nova Iorque, face às dúvidas quanto à identidade do saxofonista que por vezes aparecia na esquina da 31st Street com a Eight Avenue. Rumores diziam que Logan havia partido desta para melhor. Foi em meados da década de 60 que o Giuseppi Logan Quartet (Giuseppi Logan, Eddie Gomez, Don Pullen e Milford Graves) gravou dois álbuns importantes para a ESP-Disk. De então para cá, quatro décadas passadas, que seria feito do homem? Aí está, vivo e ao que parece em boa forma. Para o quinteto que agrupou em Setembro último, Logan chamou músicos de duas gerações diferentes: os contemporâneos dos quartetos originais, pianista Dave Burrell e baterista Warren Smith, o contrabaixista francês Francois Grillot, que se junta ao trompetista e clarinetista Matt Lavelle. O disco, simplesmente intitulado The Giuseppi Logan Quintet, tem lançamento previsto para 23 de Fevereiro.

We started doing sound collage together in 2005, then improvisation in 2007. Our first goal was, and still is, to feel pleasure by playing music. Anne is not an academic musician but she has the feeling and the freedom to use her voice, to hit objects, guitar and everything around her. I play toy ziher and computer with the help of a software called «usine». This software is much more adapted to my feeling in improvisation.

I collect a lot of stuff. some seems to be rather useless. Like the old three-stringed guitar, cracked cymbals, my first record player that don't work like it should (but still give me some good memories from my childhood), the little transistor that hardly take in norwegian channels, or the cones I pick outside and let dry in my room.
When touching and pick at them i find interesting sounds. some i slightly manipulate in the editor, others are their real sounds.

with this ep i want to share some of my experiences with the sounds from a few of my collected objects.
