Hello everyone!

I'm happy to announce that I now have a more mature email address and that A Cappella is changing locations!

A Cappella can now be found under the name of 'Postcards From Far Away' at www.aphraditi.blogspot.com

The reason for the change in location is related to the email change. Since I'm kind of abandoning my old email, I feel too lazy to sign in to blogger separately while I'm signed in to my new email. So the change in location is also because of my chronic case of laziness. This being said, it's the same blog and I would love if you guys could take the time and follow my blog at its new location!

The Last Weekend

School starts on Tuesday, and I'm not at all ready to give up summer. I'm going to miss the sleeping in, the relaxed breakfasts, the laid-back attitude, and the days of pure fun. I'm going to miss watching movies during the day because I just feel like it, and I'm definitely going to miss soaking up the sun and the beautiful weather that is soon to disappear.

Speaking of summer habits, ever since I came back from Europe, I've developed a bad habit of eating nutella out of the jar. My mom gets quite flabbergasted with me and my sister thinks I'm a caveman.

To make the most of this last weekend, I've been doing my heavily procrastinated APUSH summer homework and studying for the ACT that's coming up next weekend. Ideal, right? Don't worry, that's not all I did. I also went to the state fair! Yes, I'm not joking when I say that I have never been before. For some reason, we were always busy during that time of summer. Anyway, I enjoyed myself thoroughly. The food was amazing and I can definitely see myself going back next year. My favorite food was probably the island noodles from the International Bazaar.

I just realized that I still have to buy candy for my Link care packages. Whoops, totally forgot about that.

I am obsessed with Florence + The Machine. Her second album is coming out in November, and I literally can't wait. You'll be seeing her in the spotlight section soon enough.

Actually, I've been obsessed with British artists in general. Adele, Florence, Mumford and Sons, and The XX have been constantly circulating on my iPod for this last month. Maybe that will be the next mixtape...

That reminds me, I'm thinking of doing away with the 'Mixtapes' tab and re-incorporating the playlists into my posts, the way they used to be. Opinions?

Nothing To Lose

I have reconciled with myself, with not being in Chamber Orchestra. I don't need to judge myself based on my accomplishments or my failures. I can just... be. I can just take each day as it comes, and accept that I can't be perfect. It's a work in progress, but I feel free. Free from that monkey on my back.

Future Reflections

I feel like I've been falling behind with blogging this summer. Or maybe I'm just embracing a more laid back strategy. Yeah, I'd like to think it's the latter.

As Back to Business days approach, I keep experiencing a weird sensation in the pit of my stomach. Butterflies wouldn't do the feeling justice. More like squirrels. I know it's because I'm nervous for the coming year. My parents keep assuring me that I'll be just fine, but somehow I know that this year is going to be the ultimate test. I seem to have a knack for taking on much more than I can handle. But then again, I've had that tendency for a long time. I'm starting to reconsider some of the decisions I made in the spring. This probably sounds exponentially vague, but you can mostly likely figure out that I'm talking about classes I signed up for. With 3 major AP classes overlapping, goals of doing well on the ACT and the PSAT (didn't forget about that, did you?), and an after-school job, I feel like I'm getting too close for comfort to my breaking point. I guess we'll know soon enough. That is not to say, of course, that I'm not extremely excited! I like to think that I might go to prom, get my license, and have a chance at all the other fun stuff I know this year will bring.

I know I haven't updated the spotlight section for a while now. It's not so much that I don't have time or that I don't know which artists I want to feature. I'm just... lazy. Also, I think I'm going to modify the way I do spotlights. Right now, they seem very stiff and formal. I'll have to fix that.

Speaking of being lazy, I'm not really feeling the travel log anymore. Should I continue? Please comment with your thoughts. Seriously.

Currently, I am still moping my braces. Yes, they were plastered onto my teeth this morning. To clear up any questions, I had to get re-treatment because apparently my orthodontists discovered at my last checkup that they had angled my upper teeth in a manner that could prove to be hazardous as I get older. So here I am, a metal mouth once again.

On Monday, I got my first paycheck. Okay, that's not true. I got my first paper paycheck. Normally, I have a direct deposit, but for some reason we're getting actual checks this month. It was quite empowering. My mom took me over to the bank to deposit it. I think the teller was amused by my glee at doing such an adult task.

I'm not completely sure about when I'm going to post next.
Maybe when I publish my pending Euro Trip playlist.

Euro Trip - Day 1

July 29th

We landed in Paris at around 7:30 am (12:30 am our time) and proceeded to customs. Afterwards, we met James, our tour guide! James was British, so it logically follows that for the whole first day I was mostly paying attention to his accent rather than his dialogue. While waiting for our tour bus, we withdrew money from via ATM. Since the bus was stuck in traffic, we were waiting for a decent amount of time. One of the first things we noticed was that the cars were nice. Even the taxis were Mercedes-Benz.

When we finally got on the bus and arrived at our hotel, we dropped off our luggage in the dining room as our rooms weren't quite ready yet. We were quite hungry since all we'd had to eat was a cold banana and some juice on the airplane so we decided to eat some brunch. James led us to a very cute cafe at the top of a store called Printemps (think Macy's with eight floors). The cafe was on the terrace of Printemps and had a very nice panoramic view of Paris. It was at this time, while eating my yogurt parfait and bread roll, that it finally hit me. I was in Paris!

After brunch, we set out to enjoy our first day in the City of Lights. Is it just me but isn't Paris known as the City of Love? Anyway, we bought metro ticket packages known as Carnets that consisted of ten tickets and got a brief tutorial on how to use the metro. We used our first metro tickets to get to the Arc de Triomphe. Though we didn't go to the top because of the length of the line, the Arc was amazing. The intricacy of the engravings and sculptures on it were mind-blowing.

When we had exhausted the Arc, we were allowed to explore the one and only, Champs Ellyses. If given time, I would've been able to spend my entire day on that street. The stores were amazing, and the way they all fit together seemed impossible somehow. The restaurants, the people, even the street musicians were more classy than anywhere else in the world. For a quick lunch, we stopped to eat crepes. Most of us chose the Nutella and banana crepe, which tasted heavenly.

After enjoying our time on Champs Ellyses, we all met up again at the obelisk gifted to the French by the Egyptians. This was also where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were guillotined. We continued to the Tuileries Garden, which had a neighboring mini amusement park. From there, we walked to the Musee de l'Orangerie to see Monet's Water Lilies. For all you Euro kids, this is where Sister Wendy went swimming. Prod also told us about how the last time he was there, he was escorted out after loudly yelling "RETREAT" in response to some Picasso paintings. (see below)

Apparently, they're supposed to be women. I'm thinking more like half-giants.

After the Orangeries, we went back to the hotel and got our room assignments. I ended up in a trio with Mara and Summer and we got a room on the sixth floor. Our first order of business was to get familiar with our television and find the music channel. We then refreshed ourselves and then left for dinner at Chez Clements.

Dinner was... disappointing. As a flexi-vegan, finding a hearty meal away from home is difficult and for our first French dinner all I ate was peas and potatoes. Not exactly satisfying to my palate. James, however, assured me that Switzerland and Germany would be much more satisfying for a vegetarian because in a big city like Paris, it's hard to avoid non-veg cuisines. This was comforting but at the same time it meant two more dinners of less than satisfying food. However, the city made up for this pitfall in other ways.

Euro Trip - The Flight

July 28th

The one thing I remember the most about the flight would be the screaming little girl right behind us. Initially I was sympathetic but that changed quickly. For such a small person, she was quite relentless and taxed her vocal chords for most of the flight. Naturally, as someone who has trouble sleeping on airplanes without loud children, I barely slept. However, I did make the most of my time awake and watched the movie Just Go With It. Now that I look back on it, I feel bad for the people sitting near me because my hysterical laughter must have gotten quite obnoxious. Long story short, it is a hilarious movie and everyone should see it. In summary, the flight was around nine hours and consisted of terrible food, loud babies, and a good movie.

Home Sweet Home

It's official. I'm home.

To say I enjoyed the trip to Europe would be the understatement of the century. Currently, I am having trouble expressing my thoughts because I usually experience incoherence when elated. Along with the gratification of traveling Europe, the trip also gave me oodles of confidence. In the past, whenever I've been on trips, my parents usually take care of everything and my sister and I usually sit back and enjoy the fruit of their careful planning. For the first time, I got to experience all the responsibility of traveling abroad and I think I did pretty well, if I do say so myself. I also feel like I learned a lot more about myself and my personality while on the trip. I became friends with people I had never talked to before the trip and definitely surprised myself with the independence I displayed while on the trip.

For those of you who probably won't see me before school starts or until much later, and want a more detailed account of the trip, fear not! I will blog about the entire trip under a new tab, so keep an eye out!

Though I did have an indescribable time in Europe, I cannot be more glad to be home. To sleep in one's own bed and be allowed unrestrained use of the bathroom are pleasures all on their own. However, if there was something I do miss from the trip, it would be the constant presence of Nutella. I'm going to have to make sure my mom purchases some the next time she is at the grocery store.

Since I know no-one will be able to continue their week without a post for me (yeah right) I have decided to bless you all with an update.

Let's cut right to the chase. The final Harry Potter movie was epic. That is the only word that describes it. This is probably the last thing that comes to your mind when thinking of the movie, but the music was amazing! I am definitely buying the soundtrack.

I got my AP Euro score, and I am definitely pleased!

Speaking of Euro, a week from today, I will be in Europe!!

You are probably wondering why I haven't updated in a while since I'm usually bombarding the Facebook news feed with links to my posts. Well, I have been away at science camp, specifically engineering camp. STEPS = love. It's basically the best camp ever. Shout-out to the STEPS girls, for a week of pure fun. I'm going to miss the crappy breakfast, the amazing lunch and ice cream, and the late night romance with You Tube. If you are feeling daring, watch the videos that I've recently been tagged in. They were made at three in the morning which makes them all the more hilarious.

I am in love with Clearasil Ultra Deep Pore Cleansing Pads. Just thought the whole world should know.

There's this restaurant on Nicollet Ave and 27th Street in Minneapolis called Rainbow. They have the best Chinese food ever. Seriously.

I'm super duper excited to go out on the lake tomorrow!

Tears of Joy or Sadness?

This past week has certainly been eventful!

The much awaited Vans Warped Tour was on Sunday. We reached there bright and early only to find out that Hellogoodbye (the best band ever) wouldn't be playing until 8:15 pm. There are no words to describe my frustration. For one, the heat was sweltering. Secondly, the some of the smokers were just plain obnoxious. Dear smokers: You probably don't realize this, but I really don't want to be suffocated by your secondhand smoke when all I'm trying to do is get some shade. Eventually we took shelter in the Nintendo 3DS tent and played video games for about 2 hours straight. At around two, we decided it would be wise to start getting in line for the Hellogoodbye signing. I got my newly bought poster signed and I am happy to say it is now hanging directly above the Iron Man 2 poster in my room!

The bands that we saw were Simple Plan, Paradise Fears (heard them for the first time!), The Ready Set, and finally Hellogoodbye. We actually weren't planning on listening to Paradise Fears, but we were passing by their stage and were drawn in. I will definitely be listening to their music in the weeks to come. The Ready Set and Hellogoodbye were amazing. Hellogoodbye played "Finding Something To Do", "Getting Old", "Baby, It's Fact", "When We First Met", "Bonnie Taylor Shake Down", "When We First Kissed", and finally "Here (In Your Arms)". At one point, I touched the face of Forrest Kline, the lead singer of Hellogoodbye, as he was crowd surfing. Overall, their performance was definitely worth the wait.

On Monday, I found out that I got a job. Cannot wait for the moola to start pouring in!

You may have noticed the latest mixtape, "Music of the Sun", has been posted. Two of my favorite songs currently, "The Human Condition" and "Lock and Key", are on it so make sure to listen!

The final Harry Potter movie is coming out tonight. Every time I think about it, I feel like crying. My childhood is coming to a close and I would like to thank J. K. Rowling for raising me so fantastically.

I just realized today was Bastille Day. Does that make me a euro freak?

I'm not really feeling like doing a "spotlight" post today, maybe next week.

Music of the Sun

Hellogoodbye

I suppose it should not come as a surprise that this week's spotlight falls on Hellogoodbye. See also: Stars and Stripes. Most people are familiar with the platinum single "Here (In Your Arms)" from their first album. In fact, it was the very first song I had heard from their album and was introduced to me by my neighbor. I was caught completely unawares by the song. To say I was obsessed would be unjust to my seventh grade emotions. No, I was swept off my feet. I went to the library, checked out the entire album, and soon decided that I had found my favorite band.

Currently my favorite album, the band released their sophomore full-length "Would It Kill You?" last November. It's the perfect summer soundtrack, yet just as fun to listen to in any other season. The band has definitely evolved, but still maintains that infectious quality. Each song somehow gets in your bones and makes you feel the energy that puts the power in power pop. Setting aside the fact that I'm an incorrigible fan, I'm still as in love with the songs as I was in November.

Stars and Stripes

So I got my tickets to Vans Warped Tour.....

I am so excited. I'm not even going to bother writing in all-caps or use a ton of exclamation marks because the level of exultation (SAT word, by the way) I'm experiencing right now is kind of inexpressible. Actually, to be honest, I'm only really excited because Hellogoodbye will be playing. To say that they are my favorite band is the understatement of the century. I've had an ongoing love-affair with the band since seventh grade. That's commitment, people. But more on them in a separate post.

The Fourth of July weekend happens to bring surprises for my family every year. We always end up doing something totally unanticipated. I think that may be one of the reasons that it's one of my favorite weekends. Additionally, it's one of the rare weekends on which my parents are truly relaxed. It's always pleasing to see them actually 'chilling out'. This year was no different. One of our family friends whom we hadn't seen for a very long time decided to drop by and stay over for the whole weekend. This was by no means annoying as it may have been on any other weekend. Instead, it added to the bliss of the weekend. We drove to the Lake of Isles and biked around while admiring the eclectic neighborhood that surrounds. It was one of the best weekends ever.

I drove for the very first time. I loved it. I think I'm going to enjoy driving.

I stumbled upon this picture and decided that I want to go on a safari some time in my future.

Liam Finn

This week's spotlight is long overdue and falls on Liam Finn, the musician and songwriter from New Zealand. He recently released his sophomore album, FOMO (an acronym for Fear of Missing Out). The album is perfect to listen to in the summer and gives off vibes of pure exuberance. What I like most about Finn's work is that the songs make you respond instantly. A Series of Exciting Events

The Electrifying Evaluation: In other words, the knowledge test at the DMV. I was actually so worried I wouldn't pass so I studied my driver's manual all of Sunday. It must've paid off because I didn't get a single question wrong. Look out world, I'm taking the roads by storm....with a parent.

The Astonishing Award: I found out I won an Emmy! Well, sort of. The summer before ninth grade, I starred in an episode of the PBS show SciGirls. The show recently won an Emmy award so technically I'm an Emmy award winner, right?

The Instigating Invitation: I received an invitation to Columbia University's science invitational, which is actually tomorrow. Unfortunately, I don't get to go :(

The Intriguing Investigation: As part of a pre-employment requirement, I got tested for drugs for the very first time! I was really looking forward to it, and made sure to drink two bottles of water beforehand (it was a urine test). I'm actually worried it might come out to be postive because I had a dentist appointment right before and I might've swallowed some toothpaste accidentally. The results come tomorrow and I'm nervous! Maybe not an investigation, but you get the idea.

It's too bad June's already coming to a close, summer's flying by!

I Blame Coco

Interestingly enough, many of my favorite bands right now were originally introduced to me by a friend. I Blame Coco is one of these bands. The music is contagious and gives pop a whole new meaning. Additonally, there is a level of otheworldliness that I get from listening to several of the tracks. Normally, I prefer indie rock bands, but I Bame Coco definitely made me reconsider.

Memoirs of a Youngeon

As most of you know, I am a year younger than most kids going into 11th grade this fall. This has many side effects, including having to take Driver's Ed a whole year later (aka now).

Driver's Ed has been quite interesting. My favorite part is probably the ten minute break we get to walk around the mall. Yes, I'm taking Sears' Driving School instead of Wayzata's ridiculously priced classes. Anyway, among the oodles of fun we're having, we also watch tons of random driving videos. The following is probably the best and funniest example.

Faded Paper Figures

Though they released their second album around a month ago, I have only just found Faded Paper Figures. Their first album, Dynamo, was "a balance of upbeat and soothing electrics", as described by NPR. However, their recent music has taken on a more energetic tone, with live drums sounds and electro-beats. It was love at first listen. All it took was one listen to "Small Talk" and I was hooked.

Ironically, I celebrated my temporary freedom by searching for summer jobs. I also got to experience that awkward moment when you see your school's entire spanish department at a restaurant you were thinking of applying at.

Dear Diary

What an eventful week!

To start off, I PR'd in the open 800 in track. I was proud, to say the least.

We had a birth control specialist come in and talk to us in health. Did I mention how hillarious he was? Let's just say he is probably very successful at his job.

Mother Monster released her much awaited third album, Born This Way. I love it. Every track is different, yet each one blows my mind.

Since dance ended last week, *wiping tears away*, I got to watch the Glee Season Finale on TV (instead of using Hulu on my laptop)! It was....amazing. I was trying to think of a more intelligent word to describe my exact opinion of it, but amazing is the only word that fits. I don't think I could love the songs more.

Speaking of finales, our Orchestra Finale concert was on Thursday. I was actually surprised by how well we did! Don't me get wrong, I wasn't expecting road-kill or anything... okay, scratch that. I was. Despite how horrible that sounds, it's true. However, I was pleased with the quite contrasting result.

I got talked into watching the Disney movie "Tangled" with my sister. As you can probably guess, it was your typical fluffy princess-type Disney movie. The sad part is that my inner romantic actually falls for that stuff. Though, I started watching with a very skeptical attitude, I was definitely convinced by the end. Congratulations Disney, you've managed to sweep me off my feet once again.

Warning: I'm about to sound like a pathetic person who analyzes things way too much. Please skip over if you aren't in the mood for ridiculous conclusions.

I have realized a possible reason as to why friends start to drift apart. It sounds quite ridiculous but yes, there is a legit reason for this, especially for girls. Once again, I would like to say that this is just an opinion and if it offends you, please skip over it.

I think that girls have a habit of getting super close to their friends over a relatively short period of time, and at first, it's quite nice. We love to get close to new people and get to know the little things about our friends. But then, we hit a point where we're so close, we start to notice things that we may not neccessarily like. We may start to get annoyed or easily frustrated with our whirlwind friendship.

Ever heard the saying "familiarity breeds contempt"? I think that it mainly applies to girls. You're probably wondering, what has led to me to such a depressing conclusion. Well, I feel like I'm currently experiencing what I just described. That's all I want to say about that.

All right, I'm done releasing my inner neurotic freak.

Hello, Goodbye

Wow, one month is a long time to be away!

One of the most true things I've heard all year: "AP means advanced procrastinator." I know those of you who saw me studying my euro flash cards at every opportune moment and reading my AP book wherever possible are probably guffawing at this statement. I would just like to say that I felt like I could have studied more, but that's just me :)

The TA in my health class stinks of drugs. Gross.

TODAY IS PROM. Not that I'm going or anything. However, I will be major prom photo creeping on Sunday! Admit it, you do it too.

A major accomplishment occured on Wednesday night. I semi-conquered my fear of spiders. I was able to be in the same room as a spider and not run out screaming. In fact, I even captured the spider in a bottle! I was pretty proud of myself.

Two movies I must see: Something Borrowed and Thor

I know this happened a while ago, but since I have been MIA for a month or so, I thought I would talk about it anyway. I totally loved the Royal Wedding. Everything about it was simply perfect. Her dress, the kiss, you name it. But we all know who I really had my eye on. That's right, Prince Harry. He is just too cute. *Sigh* But here's the real news. Apparently he is thinking of tying the knot with long time on-again-off-again girlfriend Chelsy Davy. Though I'm heartbroken, I'm very happy for them.

I really like grocery shopping. It's very relaxing.

I am in love with the Script's album "Science & Faith".

I have successfuly discovered the best Vegan snack ever. At lunch, go to the ala carte line and ask for the Chocolate Mint Sweet Crisps. They are the best thing ever invented for vegans. Seriously.

I'm really tired of school. I'm partially already mentally checked out.
