Storyline (credit :IMDB) - Two years after Ethan Hunt had successfully captured Solomon Lane,
the remnants of the Syndicate have reformed into another organization
called the Apostles. Under the leadership of a mysterious fundamentalist
known only as John Lark, the organization is planning on acquiring
three plutonium cores. Ethan and his team are sent to Berlin to
intercept them, but the mission fails when Ethan saves Luther and the
Apostles escape with the plutonium. With CIA agent August Walker joining
the team, Ethan and his allies must now find the plutonium cores before
it's too late.

Before I write my review, I'd like to say this - in order to avoid spoilers, I have not read any reviews or news items about this movie or its shooting. I also paid for my own tickets to go and watch this movie in a theater with my family.

My thoughts - The storyline was
impossibly confusing and only after more than half the movie was over, did I finally
understand what was happening and why. It started when, unlike Tom Cruise's
protagonist Ethan Hunt, I was unable to "accept the mission" or
rather understand what it was all about when speedily described at the
beginning of the movie. It assumes the viewer is up to date with the movie
series and knows enough of the background that a brief summary is enough to
bring it all up to date. Although I’ve seen the previous movies, I didn’t
remember them enough to absorb or understand the rapid update. To add to the overall
confusion, there’s also the fact that there are two villains with similar
sounding names - Lane (old) and Lark (new).

While the story line is
unnecessarily convoluted, the action scenes that are such an inherent part of
this movie (and indeed the whole series) are really, really well
done. For one such heart pounding motorcycle chase sequence in Paris, I sat
with my hands covering my mouth in terror the whole time. I know in movies
stunt people do all the actual dangerous action scenes, but the CGI involved
here is so slick that it actually appeared to be Tom Cruise doing all the
actual legwork during this sequence. Who knows, maybe it was Tom Cruise himself…I
remember having read somewhere a long time ago that he does some of his own
stunts. In any case, I'm just awed by whoever it was, both before and behind the camera. The halo jump
was another amazing action sequence, as was the helicopter chase in the
mountains towards the very end.

Again, as is typical of this series,
the narrative swiftly moves from place to place, continent to continent, highlighting
some of the most beautiful spots in the world from spellbinding angles. Beautiful
people in beautiful places and surrounded by non-stop danger, almost makes up
for the little understood story line.

Tom Cruise looks good, even if his
age shows through sometimes as it does in the spectacular action scene of him
running across the London rooftops. He has donned the mantle of Ethan Hunt for
so long (indeed, I don't think he does any movies these days other than this
series) that he looks and feels real. Action scenes come very naturally to him.
The part I liked best was his reaction at an unexpected reunion towards the very
end, which felt very natural. His sidekicks are as always good for providing
humor and support, tech and otherwise. My kids have always loved Simon Pegg's
Benji and he is as usual superlative in his understated performance. Henry
Cavill is good as CIA Agent Walker. He doesn’t get to emote much and his action
scenes are limited, but his character comes across as effectively as the “hammer”
his chief calls him. The fierce bathroom fight that my kids were so enamored of
from the trailers, is his (or his stuntman’s) opportunity to shine and it is
one of the best hand to hand combat scenes in this movie.

Rebecca Ferguson (as Ilsa Faust) doesn’t
have as a big role in this movie and for the most part her character remains in
the shadows. Sean Harris as the villain Solomon Lane is largely referenced to,
and rarely speaks in the scenes he’s in. Which is a good thing as his thin
hoarse voice always makes it difficult to understand what he’s saying. Angela Basset, as CIA chief Erica Sloan, is
the new girl on the scene, and boy, she’s Effective.
Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley is now not only Ethan’s boss but also his
surprising co-conspirator, which makes a nice change from his character’s
previous attitude which was non-stop hate toward IMF’s independent streak. Vanessa
Kirby sizzles in the side character of the White Widow, a beautiful and deadly arms
broker. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing her again in future MI movies.

Now to wind up this unexpectedly
long review, I will say this. While light and confusing on the story line, MI:6
scores major points in its action scenes. And believe me when I say this – you have
got to watch this movie on the big
screen. Only then will you get to experience the full awesomeness of these (often-mentioned)
spectacular stunt scenes.

As one of the paying public, I felt like I fully got
my money’s worth with this movie, which I rarely feel with movies these
days.

Edited to add - I forgot to mention, while this movie is rated PG-13, there are very few scenes that will scare a young kid, especially considering all that they're already exposed and inured to these days just by seeing the daily news. My kids, both under 13, loved the movie. They are new to this series, and didn't understand all the ins and outs of it, but the action scenes had them literally jumping with joy. That is all they needed to declare this the best movie they had watched all year. Although my son still felt that Black Panther might just have been slightly better. (my own opinion, was the opposite :-)

Surprisingly many networks are
coming out with new shows this late in the season like CW with its futuristic
young-adult filled offer, "The 100". Now CW is a channel my
remote is certainly not familiar with since I normally associate it with the
words "young", "beautiful" and most importantly,
"dumb". What I can't deny is that while overall I was unimpressed by
this latest CW offering, I still had a good time watching the pilot. Read my reasons

If you're reading this, then like me you've discovered a new, unwanted guest sitting on your Desktop - the "HOMEGROUP" icon (above). You don't know what it is, you just know you don't want it there. It wasn't easy, but here's how I finally got rid of it ...
Yesterday, I joined the ranks of all those people who've been harassed by paranoid store owners for taking innocent photographs.

There was an interesting (but by not means unique) piece of machinery spitting out tortillas in a store. I had bought tortillas there many times before and had casually mentioned it to some out of country family members who had never seen or heard of such a thing and were bewildered by my oral explanation. To help them understand, I took a couple of snaps from my smartphone. Only the machinery was in the photos, no people at all. The photos were for explanation purposes after which I intended to delete them. The images came out dark and somewhat blurry as they were in a dark part in the back of the store and I was taking the shots from a distance.
On August 4th, to celebrate the release of DR. SEUSS' THE LORAX on Blu-ray and DVD, Home Depot stores across the nation will provide children with Lorax activity sheets, Lorax create-you-own mustache kits, and Lorax sticker sheets at their once-a-month Kids Workshops.

Each store will also have one life-sized Lorax poster to affix to a wall so kids can have their picture taken with The Lorax that you can tweet to @The Lorax and @HomeDepot.

This month's activity is "Build a Cork Bulletin Board."
Created by Craig Bartlett as a comic in 1986, Hey Arnold! debuted as an animated short for the Nickelodeon film Harriet the Spy in 1996. It then went on to air on Nickelodeon from 1996 to 2001, subsequently airing on "Nick on CBS" from 2002 until 2004. Now, for the first time, the long anticipated Hey Arnold!: Season One (4-disc set) is available in stores.

My kids really enjoy the action-packed, fun yet educational series of Chuggington. Wilson, Brewster and Koko are the 'trainees' as well as the main characters in this animated series. As can be seen from the photo below, they sat spellbound watching the episodes unfold as the charming and colorful series gently teaches as it entertains.
One of the most important word Parents add to their vocabulary is 'Diapers' - a product that features a great deal in their lives as well as that of their children for a significant time. My kids still use diapers, especially the younger one who's just getting toilet-trained and so diapers are always on my shopping list. I continue to struggle to balance my budget with my conscience because I'd like to buy more of the 'healthy' diapers like that of Seventh Generation, but can't always afford to. So I compromise by getting Seventh Generation diapers every other time I go to buy diapers. Health and wealth given priority in equal proportion :)

Needless to say when I was recently offered a chance to check out Seventh Generation's Free & Clear diapers, I was ecstatic!
And as I've described to you before, Yoplait is a brand that's long been a family favorite when it comes to yogurt.
As previously mentioned, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse remains a daily favorite with my kids whose only complaint is that they can't watch it all day long.
About the dvd - Mickey Mouse and his famous pals (Minnie, Donald, Pluto, Goofy, Daisy and Toodles) join efforts to inspire preschoolers around the country to enjoy the outdoors by camping, fishing and exploring nature.
Here Bob, Larry & the whole crew are taking to the stage with the silliest Silly Song Countdown ever. This high energy song and dance spectacular takes silliness to a whole new level. But sometimes silliness just isn't enough. Archibald Asparagus prefers songs that have lessons, Mr. Lunt only wants to sing about food, and Jimmy and Jerry Gourd are stuck in the 80s. But there's only so much time..will the Veggies learn the importance of sharing so that the show can go on and everyone will be able to sing themselves silly??

We never saw The Wild Thornberrys when it was originally on air (1998-2004 with reruns airing on Nicktoons and CBS from 2002-2007). Which is why it came as a delightful surprise when I sat down with my kids to watch this series for the first time on the dvd release - which has long been anticipated by fans but has not been available in stores until now.

The hit series follows the Thornberry family as they travel the world in their Communications Vehicle (or CommVee) looking for rare animals to film. After an encounter with an African shaman, their youngest child Eliza was given the power to speak to animals!
Wow! Wubbzy Saves the Day

Although their world is more fanciful and imaginative than our own, Wubbzy, Widget, Walden and Daizy deal with the same social and develomental issues faced by preschoolers. They learn how to fit in a grout, understand their feelings and those of others and more.

My kids have loved Wubbzy from the beginning, this dvd being their fourth or fifth one. So it was this one too, as both of them (especially the older one) watched this dvd with complete attention as Wubbzy hosted a bird-watching slumber party, had a memorable picnic in the park with Daizy and Widget, help a lost group of baby “chirpees” find their way home and stop a snoozing “Moo Moo” from vesting kooky spells all over Wuzzleburg!

The high-energy title features six engaging episodes packed with age-appropriate lessons for preschoolers all about sharing, caring, being yourself and helping others. Complete with toe-tapping tunes that got my little ones moving, “Wubbzy Saves The Day” comes to the rescue with adorable special features including a fun printable growth chart.

In a nutshell, parents and kids can watch this dvd with equal pleasure and enthusiasm.
