What Does Your Front Door Say About You?

I love driving through Forest Heights up above NW Cornell. Beautiful homes built along winding streets with beautiful doors. Bridget A Otto writes that the front door color reveals character traits of the owner.

Red: Tells the world to "look at me!" This bright color says you're not afraid of standing out or saying what's on your mind.

White: Says you prefer things that are organized, neat and clean. Even if your home isn't always this way, you wish it were.

Green: Tells the world that you have traditional values and enjoy being a member of the community.

Black: Says you're consistent, conservative and reserved in your manner as well as your approach to color. With a black door you're saying your design style is timeless rather than trendy.

Blue: Tells people you are naturally at ease in most situations and people are attracted to your easygoing personality.

Yellow: Says you have a personality similar to green, but a bit less traditional. You're most likely a leader or organizer of a group.

Purple: Reveals a "free-spirited" person who is comfortable taking risks, thinking differently and dreaming big.

We have a black door greeting visitors and I would say that's pretty accurate. I wonder if Bridget Otto has a purple door.

Book Review: Blind Curves By Linda Crill

I’ve been reading about strong women lately. Linda Crill is definitely one of those, but maybe she had to be reminded. “Blind Curves” is a wonderful book detailing how Crill learned to ride a Harley and ride 2,500 miles from Victoria, B.C. to Mendocino, California as a novice. Blind Curves is a metaphor to the fear that bubbles up inside every one of us when we approach a blind curve in our life and what it feels like to reach the other side. Blind curves for Crill didn’t just happen on a Harley. She faced them prior to turning 57, when her husband got cancer and died.

Crill writes, “One of the problems for many people my age is how to keep the passion in their lives. After decades of following the pack, raising children, volunteering, doing community service, and pouring hearts and minds into jobs, satisfying clients, colleagues and bosses, we suddenly find ourselves needing new mountains to climb with fresh challenges and surprising vistas. Many of our old behaviors, which served us so well, no longer make sense.”

Yes, some of her friends questioned her decision to ride along with a negative voice from inside of her, but she triumphed. She tells us that the joy we feel when we round the blind curve “radiates inside our bodies” and we experience “…an inner feeling of connectedness.”

I loved the book, which was provided to me free. There’s an added bonus. If you’ve ever thought about riding a motorcycle, Crill writes very well about her lessons and experience

10 Mirror Ideas For Home Décor

A mirror reflects available light creating the illusion of more space. A mirror in a small restaurant is made to seem much more spacious using a large mirrored wall. We use a large mirror in our small dining room to create the illusion of more space.
Use a wall mirror to reflect something worth looking at; a painting or the lush plant-filled back yard to bring the outside in.
Use long narrow mirrors in dressing rooms either sitting on the floor or leaning against the wall.
Balance the fireplace energy with a wall mirror, which is a water element.
Welcome visitors with a wall mirror in your home’s entryway.
Don’t use a wall mirror in the bedroom that reflects the bed. It brings a third person into the room. If you must have a mirror, try it above the headboard.
A backsplash in the kitchen may seem like a good idea to bring in light and spaciousness, however it may require constant cleaning.
Ceiling mirrors are a no-no. They can make the design look tacky.
Use mirrored furniture, such as a mirrored chest of drawers or mirrored coffee table. Vanessa Deleon, host of "Your Place is a Dealbreaker" on SpacesTV, tells us that “Mirrors trick the eye into thinking the mirror doesn’t exist, If you have a big piece of furniture in the middle of the room, you can make it appear as if it’s disappearing by installing a mirrors on it.”
Hang the mirror at the proper height. The average person is five feet six, so adjust your mirror accordingly.

Not getting enough sex? It may not be anyone's fault, but the color of your bedroom.

A recent study by Travelodge of 2000 homes in the UK discovered that people who sleep in rooms painted yellow, blue, or green get the best night's sleep. People who sleep in blue rooms got close to eight hours of sleep, according to the Daily Mail. And people who slept in purple bedrooms got the least amount of sleep, clocking in at less than six hours.

The color that promotes more sex? Caramel!

Really, we need two bedrooms; one caramel colored and one in blue for recovery.

Bridget Otto writes about the costs of remodeling and she quotes Dan Fritschen, founder of RemodelorMove.com He offers four tips on getting answers.

Checking out RemodelorMove.com, I found a lot of discussion about remodeling versus moving. This site really heps answer that dilemma. In our neighborhood, I know one couple who remodeled their house, even taking their house higher by adding a second story. They looked all over this area and concluded that staying put and remodeling was cheaper.

We are seeing other homes that are completely gutted down to the foundation and rebuilt turning a $400,000 house into a bigger house valued at $800,000 to $900,000 house. They really must like this Grant High neighborhood and its nearness to downtown!

Sofa, Couch or What?

Q. Why do we have two very different names for a couch/sofa? When you look on craigslist, they are used interchangeably. Is there a difference?

I have some further input on the question. My husband used to call the sofa a couch or davano until I corrected him Now he's pretty good at just using sofa for the multiple seat thing in the den or living room, usually taken by the dog.

House and Gardens arrived this morning with The Oregonian and friends of ours were almost everywhere.

In one we meet Audrey Theis' who moved from a condo in Sellwood to Raleigh Hills. Bridget Otto writes that Theis "...loved the traditional layout of the house and knew she could plant a vegetable garden, turn one bedroom into an office, and have the space she so desired to accommodate her extended family."

Top Remodeling Trends

The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan tells us that:

“TV interior design shows are mostly about buying and remodeling a home, versus building from scratch or finding a new property that precisely fits a wish list with plenty of personal requirements,” says Dani Kohl, program coordinator for the bachelor of science in interior design program at The Art Institute of Indianapolis and a practicing architect and interior designer.

What are the top trends in remodeling? Kohl says,

Uniting the kitchen and living space for an open-floor concept
Culture dictating an increase square footage for entertainment, haven from a busy work schedule or modern luxuries
Finding multi-functional uses for both spaces and furniture

In other words it's open plan, master bedrooms that may be havens from the world, and closets that function also as dressing area.

For our house our priorities are installing a drainage system around house in order to enjoy a dry basement, remodel main floor bathroom (tub or no tub), replace ground floor deck with cement tiles, and install irrigation system. Kitchens and bathroom redo are always at the top of the list, so we fit with the trend.

Rethink the Sink: New Ways of Turning Old Pieces into Bathroom Prizes

The bathroom is a place dedicated to freshening up, so it seems a fitting space to introduce "freshened up" décor. Breathing new life into antique furniture and retro accessories allows you to create custom bathroom components for a one-of-a-kind design that's awash with personality.

It can be as simple as rethinking an item's intended function or as in-depth as revamping a piece's finished form. Below, I'll shower you with ideas on transforming case goods and other furnishings into vintage-inspired vanities, repurposing windows into wall-hangings, and using cast-offs for corner shelves.

Vintage-Inspired Vanities
Old-fashioned case goods such as buffets, sideboards, desks, and dressers make ideal vanities, as their doors and drawers hide plumbing and provide toiletry and towel storage. Some are even wide enough to accommodate two sinks.

An open concept furniture item such as a farm, side, or sewing table can also be transformed into a bathroom vanity with a large basket tucked below to serve as a hamper or towel bin -- note that a deep apron front is ideal for concealing plumbing. Have a shorter piece? No problem. Rather than a drop-in, turn to a vessel sink for added height.

To convert your case:

Determine where the sink will be placed. (Consider shifting it to one side to allow a broader expanse of counter space on the other.)
Trace the outline of the sink onto the top, taking care to allow space for the faucet if you plan to mount that separately. (Most new sinks come with a template.) You will also need to draw the placement of the existing plumbing on the rear of the cabinet.
Cut out holes for the sink and pipes using a drill and a jigsaw.
Refinish the piece, if desired, using enamel spray paint or a coat of polyurethane. For a more traditional bathroom feel, you may opt to have a stone top cut to fit.
Mount the sink using silicone caulk, and the faucet hardware with plumber's putty.
Secure the vanity to the wall studs using screws. You may have to either remove or shorten the upper drawers to allow space for plumbing. If removed, preserve the drawer faces so they can be affixed to the cabinet front.
Hook up drain and water lines, or contact a plumber if you don't feel comfortable with this step.

Antique Reflections
Almost any flat flea market find can hold a mirror. I've seen creative DIYers convert everything from reclaimed ceiling tiles to antique silver trays to old horse harnesses into charming custom mirror frames. For an eclectic feel, pair mismatched mirrors side-by-side over a double vanity. (Install recessed bathroom cabinets behind the mirrors to gain additional functionality.) More of a collector? Hanging a grouping of hand mirrors upside down on a wall summons a bit of romantic whimsy.

Salvaged window frames are fairly common at junk shops and thrift stores and can be transformed into mirrors in just a few basic steps:

Remove the panes by slicing through the putty with a razor blade, and pry out any glazier's points (small metal fasteners).
Measure each opening carefully and have mirrors cut to fit.
Lay the frame face down, arrange the mirrors face down in each opening, and back them with cardboard.
Reinstall the glazier's points behind the cardboard.
Add hanging hardware along the upper edge, and place felt pads in the bottom corners to protect walls.
Anchor the mirror securely in a stud.

New Old-Fashioned Storage
Bathroom furniture and accessories with a bit of history provide character in an often-sterile space. And most need little, if any, amending. Wicker window box baskets or galvanized metal tubs can be hung one above the other using wall hooks for tiered toiletry organization. A vintage plant stand or stacked wine crates make great small-space shelving when tucked into a corner or otherwise tight spot. Or turn an old wooden ladder into a towel rack. (I recommend snapping plastic shower rod covers cut to length over the rungs to prevent soggy towels from softening the wood.) Have an old shutter? Use it to replace an ordinary medicine cabinet door.

The aforementioned case goods also work well as storage units. A child-size armoire, for instance, is an ideal size for a guest bathroom and provides cabinets and drawers for stowing linens, toiletries, and extra TP. If the piece features double doors, contemplate removing one of them to reveal exposed shelving for displaying towels, candles, and other decorative accessories. Hide unsightly sundries behind the remaining door. For some flair, paint the interior a contrasting color or update solid wood cabinet doors with mirror or glass inserts.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm surfing the "Other Resources and Blogroll" and I'm discovering that while many of you have blogs, there's a significant percentage that are not actively posting. I was listening to Kyle Bass, investment manager for Hayman Capital, yesterday. He believes the housing market has bottomed. It may not roar like it did four years ago, but at least it's stopped going down. In many cities, prices of homes are going up, and in Portland there's a shortage of rental units.
