You may have seen on FB or other blogs, but yesterday was HYPER's giftswap meet. The idea sparked during the holidays, we threw all the names in a hat (or well, we threw them in random picking machine online somewhere) and I got Kari's name out. I tried to pick some nice gifts for her and I was glad to know she liked them :)

I was as lucky to have my name given to Rox! Of all HYPER members Rox (my wife U_U) knows me best, of course, and she's a very economical shopper so she got me a LOT of stuff within the budget ♥

Let's start with the outit. The pics are a bit big this time, still don't have control over my photos :/

We had almost all of the group together, only 2 members were missing. This time I really saw how nice our cir is, we get along well. All these people have great personalities and that really comes out when we're just sitting and chatting comortably in Rox' home, instead of pursuing all kinds of activities all over town.

Sadly most of the group left at 5, but VelvetBat, Rox and myself stayed around to eat some rice, and later it was just Rox and me, just telling eachother how great the day had been XD

I had so much fun, I'd want to do this every week..but sadly that's impossible *_* it's too bad we all live spread all over the country U_U

Nary: about the Japanese body and Korean S-line

I finally found a reason to write this post~! I've spent a lot of time pondering the difference between the desired body-shape in Japan and other countries in Asia. I've got some information about it, and an opinion, and I'd love to invite you to share yours.

This is an add from online shop Nary that appeared in February's Ageha. The brand advertises a LOT with their Koakuma Ageha identity but I'm sure all of you that identify with Ageha and the styles it portrays, agree that this is a bit of an odd one out (Not saying this is a bad thing). A responsible factor in this is the model. At first glance I didn't know whether she was Japanese or half or foreign (Asian), but her look reminded me (the Japanophile with hardly any interest in Korea anymore) of one thing: S-line. Alonside her dark hair and styling that tells me k-pop rather than 'Ageha', you can't get around her amazing figure: a volumnious yet compact bust and round yet modest hips in a figure-hugging dress of a fuzzy material.

In Nary's online shop they make mention of their style being part of the Korean-wave in Japan (or are trying to be part of it). I used to find Ageha and Korean-wave hard to unite but if this pushes through, that's definetly a change I can live with (let me note this seems quite unlikely).

To put it off against some of the usual stuff we see in Ageha (01-2012 issue, scan from vvshu):

I deliberately chose this example because, like Nary, these are supposed to be body-conscious dresses.

Regardless of whether either adds are edited or un-edited and if these women really have these figures, what shape would you prefer?

We know how much weight and body-shape counts in the world of gyaru. Even though gyaru-fashion ought to distinguish itself by being sexy, it promotes a body shape that is flat and childish. (Hence why sexy items from Ma*rs and D.I.A. have a different effect on a more curvy, western body). The preference for a childish body shape has been interpretted by Kinsella as a collective trend to prefer a childish appearance. If I remember correctly she writes that this refers to the time of youth in which a person is dependent and has no responsibilities yet (to summarise it a bit simplisticly: escapism from the pressure of reality). This isn't an absolute statement and I've simplified it all a bit, please don't hold it against me but I just wanna make it easy to grasp.

I don't know if this is true and whether genetic potential hasn't got anything to do with it, but the effect of the diets gyaru-models hang on to, does, in my opinion, lead to a body that denies mature female sexuality.

The S-line (that seems to be product of selected workouts, not just a diet) is deliberately sexual, and there's something to say for avoiding that kind of portrayal of the female body: not all women have curves and we definetly don't need to cultivate curves for someone-else's viewing pleasure.

Many items that have been typical to gyaru and agejo style, like babydolls and balloon dresses, eliminate any hint of curve alltogether and being able to pull those pieces off well can really work in your advantage in achieving an 'accepted' gyaru-look. In that way we're all influenced by a rather sexless body-image. And in that way, the items Nary promotes don't fit in my personal current image of gyaru at all.

Tell me what you prefer! Because of course the gyaru body also has it's charm and I may have been a little harsh about it in this post but there's a reason we love gyaru and it's silhouette.

And tell me whether you agree with me at all! I'd like to know different opinions and I'd love to be convinced that gyaru actually is sexy. Think of AV-gyaru, they are really sexy and undoubtably gyaru. How does it work?

This is a post with messages I would normally include in another post but this time I don't see another way to make a post than this way.

Firt of all, I want to give credit to Rox for my new layout she made for me!!!
I'm so happy, the old one was really irritating and I'm not very computer savvy but thanx to her I've now got this lovely new layout, I'm REALLY REALLY happy and proud.

The theme is supposed to be light and fresh and easy to the eye and I really think we got there so I'm happy :D

On less happy notes, one is Photobucket. I'm aware my photos are down but I paid my Pro account yesterday and I'm still waiting for the photos to show up again.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I'll carry on storing my photos directly on blogger but for the moment old posts don't show photos. If it's not fixed by tomorrow I'll contact Photobucket~~

I've also found out my camera is beyond fixing so untill I have a new one I'm using my boyfriend's camera but it's a bit less qualitatively good so for the moment the pictures might not be of the best/clearest quality.

Hey there~~
Sorry for my late posting, I got back from vacation monday night but since I got back I've been busy so I didn't use the computer a lot~

It's been a while since I last went on wintersports but this year, to break the dreadfull January, my family decided to give it a try again.

We went to Axams in Austria, a place near Innsbruck where (currently) the youth winter olympics are held.
The first days were foggy and the weather wasn't quite fit for recreational skiing but later on it got more sunny and pleasant.

Because of the combination of fog and frost my hair got frozen, but it was a pretty sight :)

We also took a day to visit Innsbruck for some shopping and to go out for dinner.

I would show you my gets cuz I've done some very economical shopping but my camera is a bit broken so I can't really take pictures at all :/

I do have some holiday-outfit-shots for you. Like last summer I showed you my outfits with beach-hair, this time it's casual looks with frost hair :/

I hope I'll get my camera working again, to be honest I'm completely in stress right now. I love that camera and I've had it for 5 years ;A;

To be able to finish up back-posts before I make my last exam for the 1st semester and head for Austria tonight (going skiing), I'll have to unite 2 very different things in one post. One is the post about New-Year's eve, reduced to some outfit shots. The other is about my boyfriend returning from Japan and bringing me A LOT of stuff (He didn't spend a lot on Christmas in order to buy me stuff in Japan ♥).

But first. I spent NewYear's with Rox, like last year. Except nothing ever beats last year~~ but we had fun anyway :) Before the Dusseldorf meeting I hadn't seen Rox for a LONG time so we had some catching up to do~~

As for the outfit..

I went for something more neutral. And to be honest, this make-up -even though it still needs a lot of developing- makes me feel really good. It's a bit less thick and obvious than my usual look but I think this actually suits my face more. The other makeup looks great in good angles and making cute faces but this style is more comfortable to the curves of my face even when I'm not trying to look cute.

Another thing is my boyfriend :).
He was gone from Christmas till last Friday. (I HATE admitting it but I did miss him a little.) But now he's back and he brought me gifts! Along with a bunch of stuff I asked him for, like magazines and a box of underlashes (I insisted to pay him back for those so please don't get the wrong idea)

Now is that a lot of stuff or what?
One thing I'm really really happy with is that pile of books there. That's year 1 to 7 of Harry Potter :D You may not know it, but I'm a bit of a Harry Potter fanatic~~ Harry Potter has also been a great part of my progress in the English language since I was young, so my boyfriend, clever as he is, figured that if he bought the Japanese versions, this would improve my Japanese a lot.
I think this might be true and when I'm in the train tonight I'll get started in The Philosopher's Stone ♥
Then there's food he brought, the February issues to Ageha and Egg ♥ which came with gifts btw. I've never heard of Ageha including gifts, in fact I think the chief-editor of Ageha has, in an interview, mentioned she finds magazine-gifts worthless.. Nonetheless they're there on the right: EggXJSG make-up pouch and black OTK's with detachable ribbons (can also be worn in hair~~)from Ageha.
He also got me my Diamond lash-Princess eye underlashes, because I'm afraid of running out, and lash-glue :)

And there's one more thing, which would actually have gone quite well with the NewYear's outfit:

A bag from Gold's Infinity T^T OMG I love it so muchhhh. It's big enough to hold my college-notes it's black and white so it suits most of my stuff and it's just AWESOME I'm so happyyyy ♥

Anyway, I'll be away for the week so please don't feel bad if I don't reply to your comments, e-mails or other things. We don't usually get internet in wintersport accomodation, somehow it's always more...oldfashioned.

X-mas Gal-meet in Düsseldorf

So I'm a bit late making a post about the Düsseldorf gal meet, but I have to do it now because I want all 'late' posts done before I go on vacation Monday night :)

First I wanna say I had a GREAT day at the Gal meet in Düsseldorf. I didn't talk to too many people but the people that came to have a chat were DARLINGS and I felt very welcome and it was a lot of fun :)

A lot of the pictures in this post were stolen from Rox and Sui's boyfriend Binh (who is a marvelous photographer).

Because Düsseldorf is in Germany and it takes a while to get there I got up early to do my hair and stuff. I'm sure you've seen the pictures of my outfit or more specificly, my heavily-accessorized hairstyle float around on FB and in group-shots on blogs and things, but it all started like this:

I was planning to put a ton of roses in there but when I was finished with making the hair(it worked out really well, I'm really proud), I was hesistant to cover it up with roses..but I did it anyway~~

The outfit was something between Hime and a more Retro kind of look, but the overwhelming pinks everywhere and the massive hair kind of excluded that last option

I was really really proud of this outfit actually. I think this is kind of the way I want to look most of the time~~

I met up with my gals at Venlo station, last station before the border.

Together we went to Düsseldorf by train :)

We met up with the rest of the people in the station and walked to a cute Japanese shop that mainly stocked magazines, manga and books. (I spent a moment thinking about buying the one issue of Ane-Ageha they had sitting there, but I didn't, cuz I'm broke.)

The real reason we went there was for the Puri machine :D In Düsseldorf we spent a LOT of time taking Purikura. I love Purikura and hardly ever get the chance to make them D:

After spending a lot of time in the shop, the group split up and we went for dinner in a Mexican restaurant with Ari and other sweet gals :)
The restaurant also sold cocktails so the group rejoined us later to have drinks~~

After taking a lot of fractured group-shots, my friends and I had to run to the station in fear of missing the once-in-an-hour-train (mainly cuz the guy from the restaurant needed a lot of time calculating etc etc).

It was a great day and it really makes me feel motivated to keep up my style and I hope to join German meetings more often. I also hope some of the girls that don't live too far from the border might join one of our meetings one day :)

Giveaway Winner and What's in Shops.

This time the giveaway didn't pull quite as many entrants, but that's only better for the ones who DID enter :D. The lucky number was nr 50 for those who want to know, Hiwatarii-chan won the giveaway this time :D. She told me it was the first one she'd entered so I'm glad she won :)

Now for some outfits I've put together through the online shops of River Island and H&M. Most of these clothes are sale-items right now so it's pretty budget-ty

In both cases it's the top that cought my heart and just because it looks more convincing I built an outfit around it.
I hope I've been able to encourage at least one of you to get that white tunic top from H&M, if you love sweet style I'm SURE you won't regret it.
Same goes for the lilac blouse from River Island..it's just what I'm looking for but I don't have a single euro to spare D:

Also, I made these through polyvore. I like using polyvore for making outfits but I don't usually make ones that are actually obtainable, I just do it to make a collage inspired by pictures or characters from a TV-show, that's also why I filled the image up with letters and flowers and stuff...if it's annoying let me know, then I'll make it more neutral next time~~

So it's the last day of 2011 and the day the My gal history series will be concluded.
I'll look back on my life in relation to gal style this year. I'll illustrate this with pictures of the highlights in my 2011 and I'll peek into 2012 and my expectations and plans for that year.
I'll line up all of my gal improvement memes (Lizzie's great idea) since 2007 so you can take a good look at my improvements since I got started in gal style.

This is how my year started:

With Rox in Kyoto.
I had the BEST start of 2011 and I'm sure that will never be beat. It was the best January of my life ever (Because I generally hate Januaries)
I spent all my time with my best friend, we were in Japan so it felt like we could take part in gal culture and dressing up felt so much more fullfilling.
I also bought a LOT of stuff that boosted my wardrobe throughout 2011.

In January we met a lot of sweet gals from all over the world in the international meet in Tokyo and it was the second time I got in touch with Japanese media for a bit :) it was interesting!

In March the big disaster in Japan really shook the world. All in all this was a very very interesting news year with a lot of crisis in Europe and with the revolutions in the middle east going on, it's certainly a year full of events!

In May I won Best Hair Styles and Best Use of Hair Accessories in the GGA. I personally was very proud and if the GGA will be held again I'll do everything to defend my titles XD
But May ended with a bang as on our way to a meeting in Dusseldorf that month, Rox, Josephine, Jessica and myself got in a car accident. Rox' cute car Truus sadly didn't make it but the rest of us were relatively fine~

After May my holidays started and whenever I have long holidays I basicly become a numb and uninterested bitch to be honest. When I don't have stuff to do I become very very lazy and inconsidderate.
Since June I just lost my aim in gal style. What do I want to look like? Why do I want to look like that? I was starting to notice Agejo style was getting too over-the-top for me and the more common gal style was too plain.

But in July I got my first sponsor :D Pinkyparadise. I was recently contacted for sponsorship from an alternate sponsor but I'm still waiting for the goods to arrive, I might want to email them about it~

I also made my first (and yet only XD ) hairtutorial and started The Gyaru Challenge, the idea Rox started on her blog. I thought it would help me find myself again in gal style but to be honest it really cut in my confidence and took away my pleasure in gal style rather than boost it.

Then there was the second-Dutch-International meet in Amsterdam, which was a lot of fun. I love international meets because I like meeting new people and Dutch people are a bit dry so it can be nice to be surrounded with more visibly enthousiastic people..

In August was the Gyaru fashionshow and style lecture at Abunai-con! That was a lot of fun and it helped our circle to bond. HYPER also expanded greatly in 2011 with many new members :)

In september I still had the best intentions bringing this blog back to life but to be honest from september up to now I've been hanging out with what we call 'the man with the hammer' (you could take this in very funny :D). I've been very very busy with univerity and I've not at all been well, maybe I've been slightly overworked. It's acknowledged by the faculty board that we have too much to do, so that is some support as to why it's been so tough, and I don't need to be ashamed of my incapability anymore.
Since Christmas I've been getting better and better and when I get the chance to hang out with my friends, like last wednesday, I feel great and confident. So I'm gonna be fine :)

I hope I'll be able to make it through the last semester of my Bachelor in 2012 and I hope I'll be admitted to the 2-year master programme that should enable me to study in Japan for a year in 2013/14.

Style-wize I hope I can just feel comfortable with whatever I like and not care too much about what's 'in', because that's what's been breaking my heart this year as I simply don't care AT ALL about the styles that are in now..
I still want to improve even though I'm not sure what I can do to improve, I think I need to be more neat and precise with my hair, makeup and accesories and I want to become prettyer..in all angles~
I intend to only wear comfortable clothes and this might mean I'll sell some stuff eventually but I'm not sure yet.
I also hope to lose some weight as I've put on a lot recently.

For this blog I hope I'll just have more time and a more interesting life to blog about, but if I can't, I just can't..I hope you won't mind..

I generally just want to have FUN and see more of Rox :)

Christmas gifts, gets, what's in shops and an outfit!

I could've made 3 posts out of this one but I don't like taking Christmas posts into next year so I'm putting it all in one post.
Christmas day we had dinner in my granny's house. My mom decorated my gran's house, we did everything slowly in a more relaxed manner and that's really what I needed. No hectic Christmas~

On boxing day we swapped gifts!

I got 2 pairs of shoes(Steve Madden and Adidas) from my mom and my old curler (well a new one but the model I had before but broke, it's from Vidal Sassoon and I really recommend this one) from my boyfriend. He's in Japan at the moment, I asked him to bring me stuff! My aunt gave me a cute dishwashing brush and little towel thingy.
I'm very content with all these things, they're what I wanted/needed and some were total surprises, but really good ones ♥

I wanted to wish you a merry christmas but I've been really busy with christmas stuff and I realized if I wanna end this series before the year's end, I better get on with it!

Today's pictures are my favourites from 2010-04 issue of Ageha, I'm sure most of you or a lot of you anyway, will have seen them and they're from VVSHU.
Style-wise I feel like in 2010 Agejo/Hime style split off to become more and more over the top while general gal fashion went in another direction. We don't see half as much big puffy hairstyles in the magazines as we did in 2009 and untill today I feel like the really extreme hairstyles became exclusive to hime style and some of the girls that like D.I.A.

in 2010 we started with a big meetup in the Netherlands that was a collaboration of Shebooya cir and our cir HYPER. It was the beginning of a very active year in gal style.
I dropped most of my interest in other fashion styles like Lolita and more mainstream fashion. I would wear gal for every special occasion and whatever I bought, it would be gal inspired.

I started this blog because..well mostly because everyone was doing it to be honest~ but I also wanted to have all my gal related pics and posts saved on one spot and not scattered around the web on various forums and communities, and I was sick of seeing something cute I wasn't able to buy. Now I can take a picture and share it with you guys and who knows, someone else might buy it. I still like those posts most even though I've been slacking updates lately and my phone isn't functioning properly so I can't get my photos off my phone anymore :(

In 2010 I finished my first year of univerity quite well and Rox applied for a year abroad in Japan. We met up a lot in 2010. She helped me out of a little sad period and together we could get excited for her year abroad.

In summer was the first 'international meet' in Holland. Even though Monica was the only international gyaru present, it was something special and I think we reached the biggest number of meeting participants in Holland up to then.

In summer I also met my current boyfriend. I never thought it would last this long and I never felt like I was quite the kind of person for a relationship at all, but having a boyfriend has some advantages I wouldn't want to miss right now XD

When Rox left for Japan, HYPER lost a lot of it's power. Rox is the most active one among us and even though I did feel responsible for keeping us active, I was busy and I just don't have the same kind of drive as Rox does, to hunt down all the members in order to meet up. She's really the glue that sticks us all together~ I would be totally lost in gal world without Rox I think.

One thing I did manage by myself in 2010 is to visit Tsukicon in Finland to see Yumachi and Aina and meet a lot of gals! I went there with my boyfriend but on any next occasion I would much prefer to go with my friends. I felt a bit responsible for his entertainment because I dragged him along to accompany me. Nonetheless it was a lot of fun and a GREAT motivation to meet the sweet gals from Finland (Everyone was so nice to me!!!!) It was also a special twist that Egg magazine and Fuji TV were there and took an interest in us. It makes you feel like you're part of a big community and it does breed a sense of together-ness.

I had some short short short jobs in summer to save some money for visiting Rox in winter. But most of that trip took place in 2011 so I'll focus on that in the next post in a couple of days.

So 2009 is an interesting year, lots of stuff came to pass that really made me feel more comfortable in gal style. I have great memories of that year :)
Because I think an increasing amount of the people will be farmiliar with 2009's gal style I won't be concentrating on that but rather on my own developments in that year. The pictures are scans from Betty and Hime-style 2009. These mags are a little less commonly uploaded (I wouldn't dare say there are no scans online of these issues but maybe...) so they might be interesting to some of you :)

2009 was the year my hard work was starting to pay off. I got especially much confindence after I won a theme-contest on everyday_gyaru which back then had monthly themes (that was a real post pusher for me, I really like themes).
The contest was to design a magazine cover with your face on it, I don't think I would participate in that kind of theme if it would come by now, because it would make me feel awkward but...such is the boldness of young age. So I participated, and surprisingly, I won :D I was really proud and that really inspired me to keep putting effort! the picture I used is visible in the march slot of the improvement meme.

2009 is also the year I started looking for a gyaru-social environment. I was slightly farmilliar with some gals in the ParaPara subculture in the Netherlands but the problem is I didn't feel comfortable in ParaPara at all.
My prime motivation was to meet new people but in the end it were the people I already knew through my participation in Lolita culture, that joined in on the first Dutch Himegyaru meeting.
That meeting initially created the dutch Hime forum, evolving into the dutch gyaru forum. AND it was our motivation for starting our circle HYPER to enforce more gyaru themed events :) Even though the circle didn't really come into existence untill october that year, I daresay the foundation was layed in March.

In the end of the school year (2009 was my last year of highschool) I caught pfeiffer's disease (also known as mono), which made me have all kind of minor illnesses like influenza and throat inflamation for little over a month. It also took away all my apetite and I lost almost 10 kilos (talking about an easy way to lose weight *_*).
Even though I wasn't in a condition to study hard I passed all my exams quite well and I put all my graduation money together, my mom doubled it and I could go to Japan for the second time! This time was with my kind of boyfriend at the time, he's a medical student from Fukuoka and we traveled around Japan together. We're still good friends but for both of us a long-distance relationship wasn't ideal.

I had the chance to really get mixed into gal culture, I fell in love with Glamorous Jane and I bought prisila extentions that really finished my look. The 2009 Japan trip kind of doubled my experience with gal style and it made me more and more enthousiastic!
It was also the year I started working on my eyebrows, first by coloring them with eyebrow mascara and later in the year I started shaping them with a tiny shaver.

In my opinion 2009 was the best year for me, I felt great in gal style, I started my current study: Japanstudies at Leiden university. I still had the aim to improve but I did feel appreciated by the international community. I got a lot closer with my Gals from HYPER and I was generally just very happy.

You'll see in the next post that from 2010 onwards I got more and more anxious of 'degeneration' and the uncomplicated nature of my interest disappeared. It was also because my favourite style(Agejo style) became less and less popular since it's peak in 2008/9, that I started feeling slightly alienated with gal style...
NONETHELESS, this will be resolved! It's not like we're slipping into a depressing phase of fighting with nostalgia. Please look forward to the next post about 2010: deepening my friendship with Rox and meeting the international community :D

'Kaarsjesnacht' in Gouda

YES! Admit it, you were thinking about cheese when you read the title.
Well you're right, Gouda cheese is named after a place in the Netherlands where it's supposed to be made (but actually I don't think all the Gouda in the world is made in Gouda at all).
My boyfriend found out about this thing called 'kaarsjesnacht' in Gouda and dragged me there.
'Kaarsjesnacht' means (little)candle-night and it's called that way because in the city hall of Gouda, only candles will be lit that night. But nowadays, just that wouldn't be enough, so the whole town was a bustle of different kinds of activities entertaining the many visitors in town.
The main event was the mayor's speech at 19:00 and the lighting of the lights in the Christmas tree in front of the city hall.

This tree was in fact a gift from Gouda's sister-city in Norway, so many of the events that night included a Norwegian component to express gratitude to the generous giver. Like folk dancing in a Dutch and Norwegian style with traditional costumes of both nations (or rather: both localities, of Gouda and it's sister-town I suppose). A Drum-band in a Norwegian getup with a Norwegian flag etc.

It was the day after my conversation exam and my outfit was simple and warm:

We went to Gouda by train and intended to eat something there, but the city was full of people and it was hard to find a place at a restaurant to grab a bite. Nonetheless we managed to get a great meal at a Greek restaurant.

There was carolling and the mayor held his speech. Which BTW wasn't a very nice speech O_o
But when my toes were frozen and the clock struck 20:00, finally the lights on the Christmas tree went on :)

it was very cute, and after admiring the view, watching several big-bands and eating traditional donut-like cakes, we left Gouda and went back to Amsterdam.

I'll be honest with you, Gouda's tree is much nicer than that of Amsterdam. Ours has cold blue-ish LED-lights that look downright cheap~
Anyway it was a nice break from the exams for me, but I must be getting on :)

Gal style had changed a with Haaady style since 2007, but in 2008 was the real breakthrough of Agejo style and gal style changed rather drasticly, in my opinion.
Today's post will reflect how Agejo style has shaped me and it's a bit of an emic point of view but I feel like in 2008 Ageha and it's style was responsible for many changes that make gal style what it is today. But like I said, it's easy for me to say, as a big Ageha-fan ^^;; I'm aware of my own opinion mixing here but thenagain it's my own blog, and not a resource reflecting the history of gal style and visual symbols objectively :P

Also, today's pictures, even though they are from the first issue of Ageha I ever owned, the scans are actually from vvshu.com.

We shouldn't forget the way Haaady style moved on and made way for brands like JSG and Galaxxy, with a funky, slightly 80's inspired look that I think evolved into what we saw later in W♥C 's house style and stuff. I wasn't personally too interested that style in 2008 and I think it was popular as part of a global trend around the whole New Rave hype that was going on.
But I think in Japan aswell as the west Ageha and Agemo were getting more attention than ever in 2008. Eyes became more dolly, hair became the biggest yet and the keyword for 2008 was erokawa.
As you know, september is my birthday and in september 2008 my friend Suuz gave me money with a note that said 'to buy Koakuma Ageha online'. 2008 was also the year that magazines and magazine scans were increasingly available online, but to have a copy of Ageha for real was a huge motivation for me to improve my style.

Even though Ageha promoted a cute and sexy style, there used to be some more mature elements that I think have been lost in the typical agejo style as we know it today.
To my personal opinion that's a great loss. Nowadays it's mainly fluffy and cute. Blazers have been exchanged for oversized cardigans and pointy pumps made way for fluffy hime-shoes or mary-janes. Like in Lolita fashion everything is overloaded with sugary sweet prints or lacy details. Same goes for hime-style where a previously elegant silhouette moved to a high-waist/flared skirt kind of shape, remniscant of classic-lolita style.
I still think it's very cute and I feel drawn to the style, but I can't devote to it 100% anymore.

In 2008 I started loving houndstooth prints as they were in style that year. Along with two-piece sets that looked like professional wear but were just a little too sexy. This kind of stuff allowed me to practice a more classic style but still as tacky and girly as gal fashion usually is.
It's these kind of styles that I'm still nostalgic to :)

And I started putting an increasing amount of effort into hairstyling.
All the suji-styled, perfectly arranged puffy hairstyles started coming into style and I was lucky that my grandma still had an old Carmen roller set sitting around :)

Ayurina became one of my idols because of this picture. She's got the doll-like, thickly lined eyes of Sakurina but with a much softer kind of glow on her that I really favour.
Nowadays eyelashes are the most eyecatching (lol) thing in gal make-up, but in 2008 thick eyeliner hit in and I started doing tare-me, but on me it was awfully awkward without lenses to fill up the eye~
I did buy my first lenses in fall 2008 (back then it went through group orders from a Korean site, not directly from a store) but you can't really see them on the meme, you'll see on 2009 pictures though

(I'd kill for these lenses btw, look at that color..it's kind of mint :D)

Another thing I see related to the popularity of Ageha in 2008, is that having a pale skin became part of the gyaru aesthetic. I remember that in the western community it was previously frowned upon if you didn't put any effort into tanning. Nowadays that doesn't seem to be even the least bit of an issue anymore I think.

I gotto show you this picture cuz I LOVE this hair and romantic rock-style, and I'm not even really an X-Japan fan.

So here's the gyaru improvement meme for 2008. Yet again, the innitiative and the meme base came from Lizzie :)

I've overemphasized the influence of Ageha in this post because really I just slowly moved to the dark side in the fall as I started out the year just the way 2007 was to me. In the end of the year I turned to Ageha in the extreme but as that's the base of how I live gal style nowadays, it deserves the attention :P
On the other side of that intense Ageha watching was that I went to dye my hair like Sakurina's..but it turned out ginger-y on me, and dark red at the roots... like you can see in december of the meme.
To me the change of haircolor was a bit unlucky, I felt like nothing in my closet matched anymore because my wardrobe was carefully assembled around my blonde hair.
I've been a redhead before though, from when I was 11 to when I was about 14 I dyed my hair in many different shades of red, but back then it was more succesfull..
Anyway, this was resolved in 2009, you'll see in a couple of days when I make a post about 2009, the year I started to climb to the level of gal I'm at today :)

Both are from NewYorker. The dress was actually a gift from my boyfriend and the coat is because I need a more flattering comfort coat.

I have a lot of cute coats but my coat for rain and nasty weather was an 8 year old showboarding coat, it's kind of worn out and not that warm anymore cuz I wear it almost all the time actually. I have maybe 5 coats for when the weather is ok and for events but most of the time I just wear an old black quicksilver coat with a polkadot lining~
so now I've got a replacement :)

Now that I've submitted all papers for this semester, I've got a little more time left to write entries here :D So I'll start today

Today's post is one of a small series I hope to finish before the year's end.
It's mainly about my personal history with gal style. Including the gal improvement meme Lizzie created.
It'll also reflect my perception of the western gyaru scene in different times.
It's gonna be a lot of text, so if you're not interested in the text just scroll down to the pictures :)

Today I'll explain about how I got into gal style, what the scene was like at the time and I'll attach the Gal improvement meme (2007) that Lizzie created and I filled out today.
Today's post will be the longest as it'll show the origin of my interest and it takes some more background.

I might have to disclose some more personal details to avoid confusion sometimes. Especially today I think it'll show the most 'shocking' part of my life story. I hope that you'll handle everything I say about my personal life with respect. I also hope you'll accept that I write some more personal stuff here. The previous reader-survey showed that most of you want to see more personal posts so I'll start here.
Of course I won't start whining about anything that crosses my path or anything. Just a few crucial points in my life if they're essential to the story.

2006.
I was someone that took a lot of interest in Japanese street fashion since I was about 13, so I'd seen pictures of gal style and did some research on it before, but it wasn't untill 2006 that I really started getting interested.

It's because in 2006 I went to Japan for the first time. I was 15 at the time and it was a gift from my father as a reward for my good grades in school.
Actually he hated spoiling me with an expensive gift like that and he planned to do it for my graduation instead. But my father was terminally ill and he knew he might not make it to my graduation, so to give me this gift personally and see me enjoy it, he booked me and my mother a trip to Japan in 2006.

My interest was innitially sparked by my attraction to gyaru-o boys XD. (Also to be clear, I don't think they're really my type anymore.) Since I arrived I kept noticing Men's egg in the conbini, and all those models on the cover gazing into the camera... At some point in a quiet kiosk somewhere in Tokyo I bought Egg and Men's egg and started exploring gal style. But my interest in lolita was still dominant during my time in Japan in 2006, so I didn't exactly go to Shibuya to take part in the scene. Though I did start teasing my hair and tried to create volume on top. I made a lot of drawings inspired by gal style and I took a special obsession in marine themed looks.

As I was back home in Amsterdam, I explored gal style through Ricoche.
Back in those days we didn't have monthly magazine scans, only once in a while someone scanned some pages and there weren't quite as many personal blogs and shop blogs online so it was a lot of improvising~

As you can see in the magazine scans (I made in 2006) gal style back then was a lot more wild, less perfectly arranged~ The style reminds me more of today's D.I.A. and Onii style. It wasn't untill 2007 that I feel a multiplicity of media constructed styles started being part of the gal spectrum, starting off with Haaady style.
Also, today's egg seniors like Kanako and Romihi were still quite young back then, I was especially fond of Kanako for having this sexy figure, not as stick-like as the other models..we sure can't say that of her anymore now.
Back then it was Natsumi Yoshida, Rumiringo, Yumikitty and Maiko Sano that were kind of the Egg-seniors. Kaoru Watanabe was popular with her creative style too~

2007.
I personally felt most drawn to manba and hime style as they were really the most clear to me and in 2007 I started joining LJ communities like Himegyaru and the former Manba_room. I slowly started posting in the communities. It was scary to me but back then the style wasn't as demanding as it is now. Nowadays we have so many resources and sources to see what's in style and to purchase items from Japanese brands or brands resembling those, buy lashes, lenses, cosmetics made for gals and extensions all over the place.
In 2007 we didn't have any of that. And the use of circle lenses and false lashes (except in manba style obviously) wasn't as prominent either. Even in Japan itself the lenses didn't have that much enlargement to my opinion, and many girls just put a lot of mascara instead of using false lashes~

Even though my manba look lacked a lot, I also got a lot of compliments and constructive criticism in Manba_room and it's basicly because of my relative succes in manba style that I kind of kept on doing it and eventually stayed in gal style till today.

To be honest the first is actually from 2006. Also that one is heavilly distorted in the template cuz I was a lot fatter than I look on the picture~
At the time the emphasis for me was on the clothes in most cases, so this meme doesn't show a lot of improvement but in 2008 it's starting to come, and in 2009 is the most drastic improvement so please keep checking back, I intend to make the next post in a couple of days :)

Surprise day out

These weeks are possibly the most stressfull and busy weeks of my life up to now. I'm not sure how I'm going to survive but I can't wait till it's over and I can enjoy my hard earned Christmas holidays.
Because I've been so busy and I was getting extremely cranky and sad, my boyfriend took me to a kind of Christmas market :)

In the end it turns out I should've used my time to read and write a literary review instead cuz I've got a lot of trouble completing all of my tasks for this week. But it was good to forget about the end of the semester's stress for a bit. So no regrets :)

I'm sorry I'm leaving this blog hanging on a bit lately but it's really for the best that I just do what I should for university, I promise I'll make up for it in the holidays! I'm really looking forward to that!!

Hello HYPER meet

Last saturday was the much anticipated Hello Kitty, Hello Holland, Hello HYPER meeting in Japanmuseum Sieboldhuis in Leiden.
We went there to see the small exhibition of rare and interesting Hello Kitty merchandise. Only the official merchandise, so not the chainsaw and the shotgun that are decorated with Hello Kitty or anything like that~

Everyone looked really lovely, it was a really nice meeting.

Sadly some of us (yes me too) left early to attend a symposium about Japanese fashion and cuteness arranged by Leiden university (this is in fact the university I go to) I hoped to attain some clarity about cuteness, fashion and sexuality to be able to form a good thesis question. But eveything just came out more and more complicated :/

Anyway :D back to the meeting yes?
We met up in the station hall.

The one with the long blonde hair is Rox :D doesn't she look great with this wig? I think it's really fabulous :)
And Elize is so cuuute <3

We walked to the museum and after looking at the exhibition we made little hats with stencils provided at tiny tables made for the kids that were to attend.

I planned to make a post about today's marvelous meeting, but I'm gonna wait untill people have uploaded the groupshots for me to steal :)
I had a lot of fun, I felt good about my coordinate, I feel happy and motivated :)

I bought a short hair wig a while back and it's been a great way to make an outfit work instantly. I've been wearing this wig everywhere, it's comfortable, I love the color and the style and I love how it goes with my leopard pants :D

Hyper member Elize made a cute halloween party. Rox, Juu and Imke were there in cute and creepy outfits :D. I wasn't so inovative so I just went for a maid/leopard thingy made from stuff I had around the house.

DIY clip-in bangs!!

Wow I did't expect to be posting again so soon but this I've just got to share with you.
In fact I've been planning this for about half a year but I was always too chicken to do it~ I've got side-swept clip-in bangs but those don't do the same thing..

So this is DIY clip-in bangs. I couldn't find any straight bangs online in the right colour and at the right price-point for me. I did however have some old Prisila extensions that have become a little thin but still match my haircolour perfectly.
What do you need?

1. A piece of cloth that is completely not flexible.
2. 1 extension (usually consisting of 2 or more tracks sewn onto a material), an old/ratty one you've replaced will serve well.
3. 2 snappy clips, can be taken off an old clip-in extension or purchased online here or here.
4. scissors
5. needle and thread or a sewing machine.
6. a brush or comb for de-tangling the (old) extensions

So if you're using an old extension like I did, comb it out thoroughly and clear the clips of any tangled hair. Don't be afraid to cut out frizzy or very tangled bits in the top of the extensions. Don't care too much about the bottom.

Cut off the clips if yours has any, you can use these for fastening the bangs later

Step 1: preparing the base.

Cut out a cirlce of cloth about 15 cm in diameter and fold it in half

Sew the sides together and be sure to keep a little space open (about 3 cm) to twist it inside-out

This is the result:

Mine was about 7 cm high and 11 wide. I wouldn't recommend making it smaller but a little bigger won't hurt. If you have a clip-in fringe already, model the size after that.

Step 2: modelling the extension after the size of your base.

First take a good look at the hair to make sure you sew the most ratty side on the bottom of the base (under the rest of the hair). If it's all equally good/bad judge by the color of the extensions like I did.

Mine were 3-tones of blonde and I didn't want the darkest part to show up on top.

Now make sure that you have a long enough track to make the sides overlap a little and sew them to the back of the base. If you don't have enough, like me, the priority is on the top rows so I cut the bottom one only just long enough to cover the whole base like so:

Step 3: sewing the rows on the base.

If it's about the bottom row, you want to sew the bottom and the top to the base, on the other rows it was only the top.
Make sure you put some extra support on the parts marked red here:

Now that the extension is in place, sew it on the blue lines:

For the bottom end of you extension you want to use this lead, lifting the hair from the material it is attached to and sewing that to the bottom of the base:

red is where you sew and blue is the shape of the base.

Just to be clear:

the blue is the shape of the base, red is where you've sewn it.
Light blue is the approximate placement of the next rows.

Sew the second row and fold the ends of that one around the base, sew it securely on the end of the base like so:

Now sew the last row on. Here it's essential that you part the top track of the extension and instead you sew the second (middle) track of the row close to the top of the base, the red here indicates where you sew, purple is where you've already sewn and blue is the shape of the base

The top one you sew on the back of the base, to hide the base completely:

Red is where you've sewn and blue is where the next one will come, this also somewhat illustrates where the second one has gone.

Fold the top track over the edge of the base, if your extensions are heat resistant you can use a straightner

This is the result:

Step 4: sew the clips on:

This is self explanatory

Step 5: Cutting it.
You will have a bunch of hair. I would recommend you wear your hair in a ponytail or bun and clip this extension on your head, then have it cut by a family member, friend or hairdresser. You could also do it by yourself like I did.

First cut it about the length down to your chin. I wanted to keep some hair long on the sides to blend it with my own hair easily so I put this behind my ears. Then part it down half and cut it just past your eyes on the side that you can see.

Then comb the other side away and cut the rest.

Sorry if this is confusing I was a bit late realizing it might be helpfull to show.

It's a bit long now, but gradually cut little strands to make it work. If your own hair isn't very thick and the amount of hair is too much, just thin it out a little starting with the lowest row.

I was very pleased with the result because the structure of this hair matches my natural hair more as they were previously curly and quite full!
If you don't have an extension with several tracks on it, you can do the same thing sewing separate tracks to the base, it takes about 9 or 10 I think. There's 9 tracks on mine.
