I had some extra burlap leftover from my bulletin board redo. Did I show you that?
hmmmm, I'll have to go look for those pics and share with you later.

Anyway, I went to my handy dandy sewing machine and stitched that baby right up.

It's not perfect but it works.

I took two tension rods and stuck them in the top hem and the bottom hem.

I didn't want to cover the whole window so I just made it big enough to cover the bottom half.

Good Morning Sunshine

It's the second day of a New Year. Again. Thank you God for the many blessings of 2011, for the trials and the lessons. As we walk into 2012, let it be with arms open wide. Let is be with wonder, let us be ready.

In 2012 let us rely more on scripture.

I wish you Joy and Peace this year.

Philippians 4:4-9

Joy and Peace
Rejoice in the Lord always.
I shall say it again: rejoice!
Your kindness should be known to all.
The Lord is near.
Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.
Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally brothers (and sisters), whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me.
Then the God of peace will be with you.
Amen.

All we have to do is listen, listen to the Lord. He says it right here in this verse and in so many others.

We can have Joy and Peace, even in the midst of chaos. In the midst of this thing we call life.

We can create Joy in our lives and in the lives of others. Step outside the box. What are you doing to create Joy in someone else's life?

We as mothers strive to have Joy in our own lives, create Joy in our husband's and children's lives. (or we should)

But let's look around this year, look at someone else's life who you could infuse some Joy into.

They're there. Close your eyes and ask God to lead you to them. And he will.

Carrying the Cross

I don’t know why my hand shot up at the last meeting when the question was asked, “Who wants to carry the cross?”

I had not been here, to Ultreya in almost a year. I didn’t even remember the act of “carrying the cross”, but I felt compelled to do it. Then after I got it I thought, “what does it mean to carry a cross, this cross?” Then I started thinking, oh no what have I done? Does this mean I”ll be carrying an extra cross? To me, when we say we’re carrying a cross, it means another burden, another trial that’s been handed to us.

The first thing I did when I got the cross is I started praying for all of you, your families and for your petitions to be heard and answered.

My dear sisters, carrying this cross has been just the opposite of another burden, another trial. Miracles have been happening to me during this time. Now let me say: these things may have happened anyway, but carrying this cross has made me more aware.

Miracle #1 – My 24 year old son and his wife told me that they want their marriage blessed by Father Russo. They got married in a civil ceremony 1 year and 4 months ago. They also announced that Shani his wife is pregnant with my third grandchild. I have 2 beautiful granddaughters already and this one will be my first grandson. Please keep Andy, Shani, Haylee and Liem in your prayers.

Miracle #2 – My 21 year old daughter is a single mom. Megan works and Rylee goes to daycare. It has been a struggle for her to say the least. Raising a child alone has drained her financially and emotionally. But during this time, she and Rylee’s father have started seeing each other again. They’ve tried before but neither of them was ready to settle down. It seems to be working so far and this makes Rylee extremely happy and secure. I cannot begin to tell you what this means to us. Please pray for Megan, Rylee and dada Derek.

Miracle #3 - I’ve been a realtor since 2002. I’ve worked in this profession on and off since then. I’ve had 2 businesses and sold them. I am, by nature a “busy person”. I am a “Martha”. About a month ago (during this time), my husband asked me to consider retiring from working out of the home. It was a hard decision at first. Making a choice to surrender, to trust, to know that I would be making the right decision. I went to spiritual direction and the message I got was “just be”. So I went home and thought about how to “just BE”. What I got from the Holy Spirit was to “just be grateful”, just be prayerful, just serve.

I have to say I am a work in progress. Sometimes it’s hard to “just be”. I have to surrender many times during the day.

The reason I struggled with letting go of my career and really trusting is because my husband is a recovering alcoholic. Tomorrow marks his 10 year anniversary of being sober. That in itself is a miracle.

A couple of years after going through treatment, he started going to Adoration. The only time that was available was 1:00 a.m on Friday morning. He took it. He was not even Catholic at the time. About a year after that, he went through the RCIA process and became Catholic. He made Cursillo about 4 years ago. He went to Ultreya a few times and that was it. The men’s Ultreya meet in Franklin once a week. They started having a family night on the first Wednesday of every month. We started attending that one about 3 months ago. The Wednesday night after picking up this cross, he came out of the bathroom freshly showered and was dressed like he was going somewhere. At first I thought he was going to AA. The AA group meets on Wednesday nights and his 10 year anniversary is coming up so I thought that’s where he was going. He came and hugged me and I asked “are you going to AA? He said no, I’m going to Ultreya. Tears sprang to my eyes. Thank you God. He’s been going weekly since then. That was Miracle #4.

Short story before I tell you about the next miracle. My grandmother was my best friend. She is my mother’s mother. She said the rosary daily. Not just once per day, all the time. Even while she watched the soap operas. I know she’s in Heaven still praying for us. She had a very spiritual death. For those of you that haven’t heard the story, that will be for another time.

Recently my mom gave me the Rosary that my grandmother received for her confirmation.

My grandmother had lost this rosary at a street fair when she was young.

When the old KC home in Jeanerette was moved to make way for the new building the rosary was found. My grandmother’s name was engraved on the cross so the movers knew it was hers and they delivered it to her house. It was lost for approximately 30 years.

Mom had it restored and gave it to me. I’ve struggled with saying the rosary on a regular basis. After mom gave me that rosary, I downloaded the rosary app on my iphone and while working on projects or having a few moments to myself I would pray the rosary along with the app on my phone. I love the way it makes me feel when I say it. I feel closer to our blessed mother, I feel closer to maw- maw and going through the mysteries makes me feel closer to Jesus.

Well Miracle # 5 happened this past Sunday after Mass. When we got home my husband said you have to help me something. I need your help. I thought oh no, what now? He said I need you to buy another coffee pot so we can have coffee in the morning together. But I like my coffee strong and I know you don’t so we will need a second coffeemaker.

Ok ladies, first of all I can’t stand clutter and now he wants me to have two coffee pots on the counter. Second of all, 6:00 to 7:00 is my time. I make my way to the coffee pot, sip my coffee and spend time with our Lord. I treasure this time. But I thought, no Debbie just go with it. He wants to spend quality time with you.

Then he said “and I would like to say a Rosary with you while we have our coffee.”

Thank you God.

Well, I bought the coffee pot and we’ve said the rosary together every day this week so far. I would have never have dreamed this would be happening to me.

I have prayed for us to grow spiritually in our marriage for as long as I can remember. And it’s happening. Are we perfect? No. Are we going to do this forever? I don’t know. Am I living in the moment? Yes.

So ladies my message to you tonight is this. Number one, God answers prayers. It may not be in our time frame or exactly the way we want it to be, but he answers prayers. Be specific when you pray.

Number 2, we have to embrace our cross. While we are going through this journey called Life we will carry many crosses. Through each experience we will learn lessons that God has to teach us, we will gain graces, we will learn patience, we will earn Wisdom.

Ok, so window treatments are done. I just love them. Nancy did a great job!!!

Now, looking over at this back wall, it just looks like it's lacking something, plus we need storage in this room.

SO IF YOU CAN VISUALIZE IT, YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I sketched this and looked at it for a while.

Then I called my carpenter friend, Mike who is a wood artist. That's what I call him anyway.

I showed him my drawing, he came and took measurements. He gave me a drawing of his version.

And Voila!

Of course, thought I wanted blue, was going to age it and distress it...............

But then I found this Metallic Copper Paint..........

Love the window seat!

My friend, Nancy the sewer made the cushion and the leopard pillows. The others I pulled from around the house..........

She did a great job!! So did Mike!!!

This just adds another layer to this room.

In her book she is challenged to come up with 1000 gifts that she is grateful to God for and in doing so, tells the story of her life. It is poignant at times but she finds beauty in the simplest things. It's a reminder to us all......

Dressing the windows

Well I finally decided on a fabric for window treatments in our living, dining and kitchen areas. And guess what? It's the same fabric I used in the kitchen of our last home. I must really love it. Some of you may love it, some may think it's ok and some will say no way for me.

But it's a toile and I love it. It's classic and timeless.

Here's what the fabric looks like.

So then I had to find someone to make the treatments for me. Ok, I know I've started sewing and I am enjoying small projects, but this job would have been too much for me.

Someone recommended Nancy Pendas from Morgan City. I called her and set up our first meeting. Love her. She is wonderful to work with and she does great work.

I couldn't decide between tans or grays and I went with grays and have regretted it since. This room needed warming up so I had it painted Latte from Sherwin Williams. It goes really well with the fabric.

I couldn't decide what I wanted in the kitchen, so I waited until these were all installed, lived with them a few days and now she is making those. So here is what it looks like for now. As soon as we install the new treatments there, I will share with you.

My creative daughter in law

This is my daughter in law, Shani. Along with being a cutie pie, she takes great care of my son and his daughter, Haylee and she is soooo creative. Love it!!

I just wanted to share with you some of her latest projects. Hope you get some inspiration.

She used these colors for inspiration to find fabric to cover a canvas for their bedroom.

And this is what she came up with, it turned out beautiful.

Then she needed extra storage for her kitchen, took an old dresser, added legs to it, painted and glazed with gel stain.

She just finished decorating Haylee's room. She found this bed for cheap. Had it sandblasted and painted. Purchased white bedding and had her talented mom sew the pillows. She wanted pops of color throughout the room.

She picked out this fabric and her mom sewed the curtains.

Then she glued scrapbook pages to canvas for art. How cute and easy!!

She found this dresser at a flea market and her mom painted it.

Then she got this idea off of pininterest. Found a nightstand for $5.00 and they turned it into this!

Hope this gives you some ideas. I know it inspired me!

Working on a guest room

I thought this lamp shade would be perfect for this space. it came from Tuesday morning.

Took an old lamp and sprayed it black.

Love what the shade says.

This is the headboard before. It was beautiful like this but we wanted a more aged look for the space.

Started by priming it.

Then glazed it with Valspar Antiquing glaze

A new space

I know, I know. I have not posted in a while. But I've been really busy. Working on bunches of projects. Don't worry I'll be sharing them all with you.

Oh and Tropical Storm Lee didn't affect us, just dumped lots of rain.

Here is the first project I'm sharing with you.

The room started off with dark paneling. Home owner could not afford sheetrock nor wanted the mess. So we painted instead.

We started with primer.

Then painted with Macadamia from Sherwin Williams.

Laminate floors were laid.

Then for all the pretty stuff.......

The inspiration for this space was a picture of Jesus that the homeowner had.

I love the warm tones and based the wall color and floors off of it.

These were precious heirlooms that were her mother's, so I added them to the room.

She picked out her accessories.

Can you believe I found this dresser with the mirror and the matching nightstand on Craigslist for 150.00?

The painting is one that she painted years ago and has been stuck in a closet.

Excuse the light from the window shadowing the painting.

The dresser with mirror and nightstand was found on Craigslist. Laminate flooring from Surplus Warehouse. New Bedding from CSN Stores online, curtains from Bed Bath and Beyond and paint from Sherwin Williams. The rest of the room was put together using what she had already in the room and from found items around her house.

We still need to do a gallery wall with family member portraits, get a new lamp and knobs for the closet doors. But she is so enjoying her "new space".

What made this makeover so special is that I did this for our mom. I am the oldest of her six children. She and my dad have always sacrificed for us and I wanted her to have a private spot to escape to. She has never had "a pretty decorated room". So when I brought her in to see it for the first time, she fell into my arms and cried. She made me cry too.

Just like those reveals on HGTV.

Another makeover

Remember this gal?

She's a gal cause she's got curves and pretty legs. I'm just not a fan of the colors and she just doesn't work for us in her current state.

Soooooo,

I sanded and primed her first.

Then I painted her the color of Avery's room cause that's where she'll be living for now.

Then I created an aged look using gel stain and target hardware.

She's workin it right there. TV stand and storage, gotta like that.

What's next? Well, working on 4 projects right now. This one is taking most of my time.

What do you do with a bedroom that has dark dreary paneling, no style and not a whole lot of money to spend?????

BEFORE AND AFTER

Isn't it cute?

The table that is.

This is how it started out. It had some kind of redish looking paint on it. This table is very old. A great piece to try out some new color.

First I painted it with Sherwin Williams Quietude.

Then I brushed on Old Master's gel stain in Special Walnut. I immediately wiped it off with clean rag.

Love it!!

I got so excited doing this project, that I decided to look on Craigslist for my next project.

Instead I found many projects. My poor husband. We had to go out of town to get it all. Oh well. Can't wait to get started.

My very first sewing project.

I have to say it wasn't so hard. Of course they arn't perfect, but they came out cute.

Curtains for Rylee Claire's bedroom.

Now her mom wants me to "redo" her room. So I'll be sharing that when it's done.

The fabric was on sale at Hobby Lobby 30% off. I had the rod. So the total cost for the set of panels. $49.50

BLACK BEAN MANGO SALAD

YUM!!

This is one of my favorite go to salads. I make a batch and put in the fridge. It makes a quick and tasty lunch.

Recipe:

1 ripe mango, peeled, pitted and diced
1/2 cup Italian dressing, any kind you like (you can use fat free or low cal)
two 15 ounce cans black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup chopped red onion
1 small green bellpepper, seeded and chopped
1 small red bellpepper, seeded and chopped
salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

In a food processor or blender, take 1/4 cup of the mango with the italian dressing and mix until smooth.
In a large bowl, combine the remaining mango with the beans, red onion and peppers. To the bean mixture, add the mango puree. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and chill until ready to serve.

Note:
Sometimes I use low fat Champagne dressing and I will substitute one can of black beans for chickpeas.
I also use whatever color bellpepper I have. In this picture I used the red and yellow.

I love this salad and its a great source of protein.

FIRST SEWING PROJECT

LEARNING TO SEW

A while back I made a list of goals, I'm not sure where the list is or what was on it but I do remember one thing was "Learning to Sew".

I'm not sure why I never learned except for the fact that I didn't take Home Ec in school. (I wish I did)

You have to concentrate and the needle hole is so little and I could break the machine and I could stick myself and the list goes on and on of why I haven't attempted it.

But that's about to change. I'm putting my brave pants on and I'm going to learn to sew.

What I'm telling myself beforehand is this. Whatever I make will not be perfect, it does not have to be perfect. I'm just going to do it.

So off Avery and I go to Acadiana Sewing in Lafayette. We're both going to learn.

You walk in and there are sewing and embroidery machines everywhere. I was already overwhelmed.

In this store you will find machines and fabric. Cute fabrics.

I see Kathy talking to a lady about a sewing machine. Kathy is who I need to talk to. Some of the girls in my prayer group sew. They purchased their machines with Kathy and she does sewing classes for them.

I finally decide on the Brother PC-210 for me and the Janome sew mini for Avery. Thanks Kathy.

I'm so nervous bringing these machines home. Like I'm bringing babies home for the first time. I'm so nervous. But I am going to do this.

Avery's excited about her machine so we open hers first.

Then we open mine, Lord what have I done. I don't know the first thing about this.

Breathe, it's ok. Let's read the directions.

FAD'S NEWS STAND

One of the things I love about living in a small town is our hometown businesses. I don't know how long Fad's has been in business, but I went there as a young girl and that was many moons ago. Anyway, Avery and I went in yesterday to pick up tickets to a play being held at our local theater. While in the store, Avery spotted a toy robot displayed on the floor. She wanted that robot. But of course like any good mom I said "no, you don't need that." Well she continued on and on in the car about wanting the robot, but I just ignored her.

That evening when her daddy came home, she told him about the robot. I saw them go into our bedroom and they were discussing why she should have the robot. This morning she bought in a plastic container full of change and said "Daddy said I could have his change and buy the robot with it". What could I do? We went back to Fad's and got the robot.

Anyway while I was there I took some pics so I could tell you a little bit about this landmark in Franklin.

Besides serving hamburgers, hotdogs, nachos, slushes and other snacks, they can do trophies and plaques.

Where can you go today with this kind of service? Mrs. Claire Walker and her daughter, Brenda Hebert work in the store together. Brenda put batteries in the robot for Avery and I don't know who was more excited, Avery or Mrs. Claire. Mrs. Claire said she had tested him out when they first got him in.

NEXT PROJECT IN THE HOUSE

PROJECT TIME

In the living area is a set of 3 large casement windows facing the bayou. The original plan was to have built in bookcases on both sides of the windows and a window seat under the windows between the bookcases. But when we got to the end of building the house we pretty much ran out of money to spend on the house. So I'm so excited that we are getting closer to being able to do it.

This is the space showing the windows.

The goal is to gain storage in the window seat for blankets and toys. For the bookcases to have shelves for displaying photographs and accessories and also to have storage in the bottom section of the units.

The major concern for me is what kind of finish to do it in. We have so much stain. The kitchen cabinets, the crown moulding and baseboards are all stained. I want to do some sort of paint treatment. But that's where I'm stumped.

Again, not sure where this image is from. But I love this piece especially the paint treatment.

I am also looking for fabric to do cushions and pillows on the window seat and the windows.

I'll show you my choices and the process for that later.

The cabinet company will be here Wednesday to take measurements, discuss the possibilities and then give me a price. Crossing my fingers that it will not be out of our budget.

Meanwhile I'm working on my first sewing project.

SIMPLIFY
