I can feel them.

Creeping in.

As the temperature drops. And the sun finds permanent cover behind the clouds.

My mind gets a little hazier.

My spirits get a little lower.

My heart gets a little darker.

I try to pretend they're not there.

I try to find my own place to hide.

...But the winter blues find me.

Have you been there? It's not even snowing where I am yet, but I'm already there.

Waking up tired. Wanting to just pull the covers over my head and sleep until March.

Relying on too many cups of coffee.

Being grouchy, and grumpy, and all those things that make me anything but a joy to be around.

And Isn't it funny? No matter how hard the winter was before, summer always seems to give me the biggest case of amnesia. Every winter I am in shock by how absolutely miserable it can be. It's like I had no idea it was coming!

Let me ask you, what do you do when you're there?

"You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;

my God turns my darkness into light."

Psalm 18:28

Do you hear that, winter blues? My God is a powerful God and His light is stronger than anything you can throw at me. Yes, you might beat me on a few days. But the battle has already been won.

Room at the Inn: A Story About Fear and Love

[I originally shared this story last year here, and shared an updated version here. As Kyle and I are heading to the shelter tonight, I wanted to share again. Something so close to my heart!]

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:17-18

As winter is here again, we're slowly remembering what it's like to feel cold. Think back to the time you were the coldest this winter. Maybe you were walking to your car. Or getting the mail.

Running an errand. Practically jogging to make it inside to the warmth.

Now imagine there is no inside for you. That the cold you felt was your reality for the winter. Imagine you have no home, no heater, no fire to keep you warm.

My life after high school has been one college town after another. This space between college life and the city scene. I have found that college towns are places where the impoverished and the privileged often collide.

My usual response when seeing a homeless person:

Please don’t talk to me

Please don’t ask for money

Please don’t look at me

I’m afraid

Last winter, during the coldest months of the year, a local church unconditionally opened its doors as a shelter for the homeless. Our town has very few resources for our homeless community, and the resources we do have are very restricted. Criminal record? High? Then there’s no room at the inn.

The shelter was staffed by volunteers who worked in shifts. My husband, Kyle, and I (along with a few others from our small group) volunteered to take a few shifts over the course of a few days. The first night I went alone. I met the volunteer coordinator and was asked to just sit with the guests, mostly homeless men, and interact with them before lights out.

I was afraid.

I was scared for what they would tell me or ask me. I was scared that I wouldn’t know what to say.

You know what they did? They taught me how to play cards.

God tore down some walls that night and softened my heart over games of spades.

The next night, Kyle and I went to volunteer at the early shift, 8-midnight. I played lots more games of spades.

One gentleman started preaching the gospel to any of us who would listen. I wouldn’t say that I agreed with everything, but something he said really struck me.

He talked about how God doesn’t want us to be afraid. That God can take away fear. That fear is the devil’s work.

God provides safety, and in Him we don’t need to be afraid of the unknown.

As I sat there listening to him, it hit me. What I was afraid of was him, a homeless man, someone that I pass on the street daily, looking at my feet so I don’t have to acknowledge him. But there he was telling me that God wanted to take my fear away.

11:30pm turned into 11:45pm turned into 12:30am and no one came to take over our shift. Everyone else that was with us on the 8-midnight had left for the night. The volunteer coordinator asked if we could stay.

He didn’t need us to really help. He just needed us here in case of an emergency.

In fact, why didn’t we go into the gym and grab a cot and just sleep here tonight?

In that dark gymnasium, we pulled out two cots, grabbed blankets, and snuggled in for the night.

It wasn’t enough for God to just take away my fear of the homeless community. No, that night he wanted me to live their life with them so that I could live my life for them in the morning.

I don’t think I have ever been so radically changed.

That night, among the snoring and the sleeping, I heard God.

This year a facility has been given to us rent free for January and February so we can offer people room at the inn again! I'm going into a new year with hope that God will continue to use me and the other volunteers to bring light into the dark of winter.

I share this story not to boast or say "hey, look at what I did."

Instead, I share this story to say,

"hey, look what God did!"

We are called to love all. Not just the ones we like or the ones who are easy to love. But all. Even those whom you may be afraid of.

"Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law." Romans 13:8

Loving others is His greatest commandment. Surely as He calls us to love, He will help us rise to the occasion.

He can remove financial barriers.
He can develop in us strengths and gifts.
He can provide opportunities.
He can even take away fear and replace it with big, deep, unconditional love.

- The other day I locked the cat in the closet without knowing it. After a half hour of her crying and me yelling "come here Jupiter," it occurred to me she was crying from the inside of the dark linen closet.

- The other day I finally finished our perpetual calendar, just a few days late I suppose.

- The other day I announced I would no longer be selling cabochon jewelry after my current items are sold. I marked it all down and listed a special discount code! You can see them here.

- The other day I realized that a banana, a cup of yogurt, a splash of milk, and a handful of ice cubes makes the best smoothie ever.

- The other day I found jenna rose, uncommon handmade, and jeanette zeis ceramics on etsy and I'm in love with their shops!

- The other day I accidentally got in the shower with my glasses on and then proceded to try to wash my face. It was the most confusing few seconds of my life.

- The other day I made this after pinning it to Pinterest. I bought the wrong kind of tortellini and added way too much edamame so Kyle and I had soy beans with some sausage for dinner. Meh.

- The other day I learned that edamame is really easy to make and is better for you than chips as a late night snack.

- The other day I signed up for a craft fair with a week and a half to prepare. Yea, oh my.

- The other day a friend of mine blew my mind with the way she explained a scripture verse about prayer. More to come on that soon.

Wake Up

Waking up in the morning is probably my least favorite thing.

I know that sounds silly, but I really hate it. I despise the alarm. I scramble to hit snooze just one more time. I desperately cry out for five more minutes.

Who am I in the morning??

Although I will never, ever be a morning person, waking up on on earlier and more consistant schedule has been on my to-do list for quite some time.

I long to spring out of bed and be excited at the thought of a new day. To wake rested and full of energy. To bound into the kitchen for my first cup of coffee. To greet the morning with delight.

This is not, however, the current state of affairs.

I usually hit snooze for an hour, moan and groan, crawl into the shower, and grab a cup of coffee with barely enough time to get out the door.

So if you're like me, here are a few articles (with some hilarious titles) that I just googled to help get our butts out of bed. (Please know that I have not had the time to read all of these completely. I'm adding them to my reading list as they seem (from the title and the opening lines) like helpful links.)

Lesley: One of my closest friend's father died suddenly last night at the very young age of 53. Her family is broken hearted and needing prayers. Thank you.

Shannon: Can you please pray for my father in law to get better. He is sick and the doctors dont know why or what is causing this sickness so if you all could pray for Gene to get better and to be healed. Pray that the doctors can figure out what is going on so he can get better treatment and medicine.
Also can you pray for my sister Tarren to be closer to God and to trust in him for a better life, and to have faith in him and to teach her children about how wonderful he is.

And one more, to pray for my brother in law Adam to get his life together and to be healed from drinking, drugs and girls and to go to the lord to help him.

Dorian: Please pray for baby, Benji, who is special needs and has multiple "complications". One in particular that causes him much pain. Pray for health, relief, peace and rest for him. Thank you so much.

I'm really town on what my perfect bedroom would look like. Our's is fine, but it's definitely the first thing I'd like to redo when we move/have the money/get a new apartment/buy a house [whatever comes first I suppose].

I want our bedroom to be quiet and peaceful, but still fun and a little quirky.

And my number one decorating rule needs to apply:

It needs to look like real, put-together adults live here, but anything that I fall in love with that I find on the side of the road and/or in someone's trash needs to fit in.

A Confident Heart

Last night, a few friends and I got together to start a discussion on Renee Swope's A Confident Heart. The tag line is "how to stop doubting yourself and live in the security of God's promises."

We tackled the first two chapters last night.

We were vulnerable and honest with each other.

We shared cupcakes!

Although I'm only two chapters in, I know this book is going to be hard for me to read.

The story she shares is my story.

The pleading she does for us to let go of our doubt and fear cuts right through to the whispers of my heart.

I have not been faithful to the Lord lately. He is always so faithful to me. And in a time when I need to rely on Him the most, put my absolute trust in His timing, I keep coming up short.

Why, oh why do I do this?

[I say the following not as someone who has this figured out, but who desperately needs a reminder and is currently giving herself a pep talk.]

A confident heart is hopeful. It not only thinks God's way is the best way, but knows, deep down, that it is the absolute only way.

"Then you will know that I am the Lord. Those who hope in me will not be disappointed." Isaiah 49:23

A confident heart trusts. As I have permanently etched into my mind (and my flesh),

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart; lean not on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5

A confident heart worships. It knows the Truth and worships, hands held high, for it knows the Lord's promise will be fulfilled.

"So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised." Hebrews 10:35-36

A confident heart is known, is honest, is scarred, is broken, and is loved all the same.

"You created my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

My favorite part of the book is that the author writes a prayer at the end of each chapter. Like poetry, she weaves them with scripture to create what she calls "Praying God's Promise."

One prayer says "When I feel insecure, insignificant, or unloved, remind me of Your perfect love that has the power to cast out my fear."

Oh Lord, please keep that ever on my mind.
