Didalam New England Journal of Medicine bahkan disebutkan, bahwa mengkonsumsi satu buah pisang sehari dapat menurunkan resiko stroke sampai 40%.

So makanlah banyak tomat biar sehat!! Ayo Indonesia, go healthy.

She said it's so important, she's willing to pay up to 50 percent more for groceries.
"I specifically look for fruits and vegetables that are organic and have the USDA label," said Greenwald.
Records revealed the organic food business made $26 billion in 2008. Consumers can tell if an item is organic by the price and the USDA label. Government rules show the USDA is supposed to certify that a product claiming to be organic truly is. Still, research by the agency's own watch dog group found real problems with that program. Channel 2 Consumer Investigator Jim Strickland got looked at an audit that spelled it all out.

<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=seramb-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B0011ULQNI&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:left;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="left" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

According to USDA procedures, organic foods get the label only after inspectors verify the farm uses no chemicals to kill the weeds or bugs.
The organization confirmed it uses mostly private inspectors, but the audit found its oversight is poor and the standards inconsistent. The audit cited slow responses to complaints and lax enforcement against cheaters.

There's not enough oversight that's actually occurring to ensure that what you're buying is indeed organic," said Dr. Mike Doyle of the University of Georgia's Center for Food Safety. "If you're going to put that label on it to say it's organic, then you have to follow those standards."
Federal law also states the certifiers are supposed to spot-check organic foods to look for forbidden chemicals. Auditors said they found no evidence of periodic testing anywhere.
"I've been feeding my children foods that I thought were giving their bodies more support, and nobody's watching it," Greenwald said.
One reason could be the cost of the testing. Channel 2 Action News paid a local lab more than $1000 to test three samples of Whole Foods' frozen organic vegetables we bought at Harry's Farmer's Market. All had the organic seal, but the label showed they came from China. The testing revealed the vegetables were chemical free. A representative at Whole Foods told Strickland the company does its own spot-checking.
Officials with the federal government said its testing program will begin in September.
Meanwhile, members of the advocacy group Georgia Organics said consumers can exercise control themselves by buying from local farms and buying in season.
"I guess in everything there are going to be cheaters. That's one more reason to know your farmer and know where your food stuff comes from," said Alice Rolls with Georgia Organics.
However, when this term is used in organic products is limited to plants that use little or no pesticides and artificial fertilizers.

Benefits of several types of organic food for health:

* Avocados: to maintain good health and growth of cells.
* Garlic: antikolesterol and premature aging.
* Onion: help prevent stomach cancer.
* Spinach: good for brain health and vision health.
* Fruit berry: prevent infection of the prostate and urethra.
* Broccoli: helping the body dispose of substances are carcinogens.
* Cabbage: useful for the prevention of colon cancer, stomach and breast

* Tomatoes: to help prevent cervical cancer, pancreas and intestine.
* Carrots: preventing premature aging.

The benefits of organic food

* Working to clean the blood.
* Discard the toxins that accumulate in cells.
* Assist the regeneration of new cells.
* Maintain levels of acid-base balance without drugs, vitamins or any additional supplements.

Advantages of organic food

* Have a better nutritional content. The average organic food has vitamin C, minerals, and phytonutrients (substances in plants that can fight cancer) is higher than conventional food.
* Organic food is more durable not easy to talk.
* Saves the production process and reduce the level of environmental damage.

Non-organic food hazards

a. Elements and the effects of pesticides contained in foods:

* Causing disturbances of consciousness (cognitive dysfunction) as difficult to spell, read, write, distinguish colors, including speaking.
* Increasing the risk to the physical disruption of the brain.
* One of the causes of breast cancer.
* Potential to cause problems with sperm production.

b. Pesticide threat to humanity.

* Threatening the next generation. Children are potentially exposed to more pesticides than adults.
* Pollution of ground water.
* Wasteful of energy, lots of energy needed to produce chemical fertilizers than to cultivate and harvest crops.

Organic foods Tips

* Choose vegetables, fruits or meat which has in fact has particularly clear and official label.
* Wash the organic vegetables or fruits with running water (tap) several times, in order to avoid vegetables from silkworm eggs.
* Boil the vegetables with a fairly hot temperature. So that can be deadly bacteria that stick to eggs (Source : sehat-organik.com)

But more awareness of chemical sensitivities has many environmentalists and public health advocates wondering if the clothes and bedding children are exposed to could be impacting their health negatively.

Some 25 percent of the world’s pesticides and 10 percent of insecticides go to cotton crops every year. In addition, petroleum scouring agents, softeners, brighteners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde are used in the processing of cotton once it is harvested. Beyond the environmental impacts of this onslaught in the vicinity of production facilities, there is increasing concern that residues of some of these chemicals might rub off on baby. According to Rachel Birchler of Mooi, a Pittsburgh-based organic children’s clothing boutique, a baby’s skin is more porous and thinner than that of an adult, and as such absorbs stuff more easily. “This means that children are at greater risk for pesticide-related health problems than adults,” she says.

Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s leading purveyors of baby products, states on its website that “a baby’s skin is thinner, more fragile and less oily than an adult’s” and is “less resistant to bacteria and harmful substances in the environment.” Lotus Organics, which makes organic clothing for both babies and adults, reports that “millions of children in the U.S. receive up to 35 percent of their estimated lifetime dose of some carcinogenic pesticides by age five through food, contaminated drinking water, household use, and pesticide drift.”

So if organic cotton is so much better all around, why aren’t we all swaddling our babies in it and wearing it ourselves? It’s all about cost. Clothing and bedding made from organic cotton is typically more expensive than similar products made with conventional cotton. Consumers watching their spending are often unwilling to pay more for a t-shirt or pants that are just going to get spilled on and beaten up.

But boosters for organic cotton say that paying less for conventional cotton items is penny wise and pound foolish. “Conventionally produced cotton material lasts 10-20 washes before it starts to break down,” reports Mooi’s Birchler. “An organic cotton material lasts for 100 washes or more before it begins to wear down.” How could that be? “Conventionally produced cotton take so much abuse in production because it goes through scouring, bleaching, dying, softeners, formaldehyde spray, and flame and soil retardants before it is even shipped to be cut for patterns,” she explains.

Also, with more and more organic cotton products becoming available every day, from specialty shops to major retailers like Wal-Mart and Target, the price premium for going organic is starting to shrink.

The oil of nigella sativa is so beneficial due to it's content of over a hundred components such as aromatic oils, trace elements, vitamins and enzymes. It contains 58% of essential fatty acids including omega 6 and omega 3. These are necessary for the forming of Prostaglandin E1 which balances and strengthens the immune system giving it the power to prevent infections and allergies and control cronic illnesses. Healthy cells are protected from viruses thus inhibiting tumours. Blackseed oil also contains about 0.5 - 1.5% volatile oils including nigellone and thymochinone which are responsible for its anti-histamine, anti-oxidant, anti-infective and broncho-dilating effect.

As an oil it is digested through the lymphatics consequently purifying and unblocking the lymphatic system.

Nigella Sativa oil was found in Tutankhamen's tomb. It is known to have been used by Cleopatra for it's health and beauty giving qualities.

The Greek physician Dioskorides used Blackseed to treat headaches, nasal congestion, toothache and intestinal parasites. Hypocrates, the grandfather of todays scientific medicine regarded Nigella Sativa as a valuable remedy in hepatic and digestive disorders.

Ibn Sina, the author of the Canon of Medicine, one of the most famous books in the history of medicine recommends Blackseed stimulates the metabolism and to recover from dispiritedness and lethargy.

Ayurvedic medicine appreciates its many qualities and bitter, warming, stimulant nature. Here it is used or a wide variety of diseases like haemorrhoids, hepatitis, fever, diarrhoea, cough, tapeworm, to mention only a few of them.

The earliest written reference to Blackseed is found in the book of Isiah in the Old Testament 28:25-27. It is most famous for the saying of the holy prophet Muhammad (sws), 'Hold on to use of the Blackseed, for it has a remedy for every illness except death.' The wording 'hold onto' indicates a long term use.

Since 1959 there have been over 200 different studies at universities and laboratories. At the Cancer Research Laboratory of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA, one of the largest experimental studies so far proved that Nigella Sativa oil had enormous success in tumour therapy without the negative side effects of common chemo-therapy. They found that it increased the growth rate of bone marrow cells by a staggering 250% and it inhibited tumour growth by 50%. It stimulated immune cells and raised the interferon production which protect cells from the cell destroying effect of viruses. They confirmed the strongly anti-bacterial and anti-micotic effects and that it has an effect in lowering the blood sugar level which is essential for the treatment of diabetes.

Recently independent clinical studies published in the archives of Aids also established some astonishing effects of blackseed on the defence system by improving the ration between helper t-cells and suppresser t-cells by a significant amount while also enhancing the natural killer cell activity.

Experiences of doctors in Munich displayed that 70% of patients with allergic conditions, among them being pollen and dust allergies, asthma and neuro-dermitis were cured by Nigella Sativa.

Khasiatnya luar biasa.

Masuk waktu dluha, Rasulullah selalu makan tujuh butir kurma ajwa`/matang.

To boiling medicinal ingredients, use a container made from the pot soil (pottery), enamel pots, or glass pan. Do not use metal containers, such as iron, aluminum, and brass. Metals contain iron and potassium trichloride ferrycianide. Menimbulakan substance deposits in the water in treating disease. During perbusan, not too often the lid off the container so that the oil content not easily lost atsirinya.
7. Use fire sesuia with boiled herbal species.
- Small Fire: Use to boil the herbs as a tonic merit, such as ginseng and mushroom ling zhi that the active ingredients are absorbed into the cooking water (boiled about 2 hours). A small fire with a long boiling time is also used for the toxin-containing herbs, such as gods that crown toksinnya content decreases.
- Fire large: Use to boil the herbs or the merit Simplicia diaforetik (sweat) and contains many essential oils, such as mint leaves, cloves and cinnamon. After boiling, put ingredients and simmer for a while. In this way, content is not much atsirinya lost because of excessive evaporation process.
8. If there are no other provision, boiling is considered completed when the remaining half of the cooking water from the original amount of water, for example 800 cc to 400 cc. If the material is boiled yanbg mostly hard materials, such as seeds or stems the third disisakan cooking water, for example 600 cc to 200 cc.
9. If dry material contains, generally dose (dosage) half of the amount of fresh material. For example, the use of fresh leaves use a spoon and if 90 grams 15 grams dry.
10. Ensure dose medicinal plants in accordance with the recommended. Generally, 1 recipes divided medicinal plants for drinking 2 times a day. Time wasted can be boiled first boiled again for 1 drinks in the afternoon or evening.
11. Drinking boiled extract medicinal plants in warm conditions and after heavy wear or blankets. However, for certain types of herbs, such as areca nut stew should be taken to avoid the cold kotraksi with resulting gastric nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
12. Generally, herbal drink boiled before eating to be easily absorbed. However, for the medicine that can stimulate the stomach, drink after eating. Drinking potions are efficacious as amplifiers (tonic) in the morning when the stomach is empty. For a nutritious herb as a sedative, such as insomnia, drink before bed.
13. Perform regular treatment. To remember, herbal treatment requires patience because it does not directly feel the benefits, but is konstruktirf (fix / build). Effects of chemical drugs it seems fast, but it is desktruktif. Because of its nature, the herb is not recommended as primary treatment of infectious diseases that are acute (medadak), such as dengue fever, vomiting, and others who must get medical help immediately. Plants are preferred drugs for health maintenance and treatment of chronic disease (chronic).
14. Herbal remedies can be combined with chemical drugs, especially for chronic diseases are difficult to cure, such as cancer to obtain results more effective treatment. Rules of herbal medicine around 2 hours after the use of chemical drugs (Source: Rumahdiabetes)

3. Beware of Herbal Mix BKO (Chemical Drugs) - Leaks Gastric because Jamu

Jamu is a traditional herb that is commonly found in Indonesia, which is used either as an addition / supplement daily as well as "medicine" for a variety of diseases. Especially for middle-class people down, herbal medicine is often the first choice to cope with health problems everyday.

Not all herbs in Indonesia entered into the list of Agency for Drugs and Food (POM). Herbal arms, for example, the construction is done directly by the vendor with the knowledge of herbal medicine for generations. However, there are many herbs that go into the list of POM and MOH and have official registration number.

Unfortunately, there are also herbs that are listed on the outer wrapper POM registration number and the MOH, but it turned out, after further explored-false. In fact, the community is difficult to check whether the number is the original POM or mere essay. This is dangerous because you never know what the materials contained in these herbs.

Compass edition of Thursday, December 14, 2006, reducing paper entitled "How to Wisely Choose Traditional Medicine". In it are discussed on the existence of 93 types of herbs that contain prescription drugs. Materials such hard drugs among fenilbutason, metampiron, CTM, piroksikam, dexamethasone, allupurinol, sildenafil citrate, sibutramin hydrochloride, and paracetamol.

Almost all of these ingredients can cause side effects directly on the protective layer of cells in the stomach (gastric mucosa), that is peptic ulcer (ulcer in the gastric mucosal wall). Peptic ulcer is the main cause of gastric leak (± 70 percent) than malignancy / cancer of the stomach (± 30 percent). Public in general know as peptic ulcer disease ulcer disease. Inadequate treatment will result in further complications of stomach bleeding, malignancy, and eventually leaking hull.

Common causes of peptic ulcer is the production of excess stomach acid, drugs, and Helicobacter pylori infection, acid resistant type of bacteria that have special properties can produce the enzyme urease that can change the acidity of the stomach into the atmosphere base. Thus, bacteria that can live and breed in the gastric mucosa.

Production of excess stomach acid caused by stress factors and smoking, whereas infection with H.pylori can dieradikasi certain medications so that the current byword changed from no acid, no ulcer (1910) became no H.pylori, no ulcer (1989).

The drugs most commonly cause peptic ulcer is a type of anti-inflammatory non-steroidal (eg, paracetamol, fenilbutason, metampiron), and classes of steroid medications (eg, prednisone, dexamethasone). All of the above the main cause of gastric leaks lately insidensinya rose sharply in the hospital, a hospital in Indonesia.

It's not drugs

Actual herbs included in the category of food supplements, not drugs, which are made from natural ingredients form part of the plant, such as roots, leaves, and bark. There is also the use of animal material, such as bile tangkur goat or alligator. The effect would not be directly felt by peminumnya. Because of its form of supplements, if any herbs that effect "cespleng", it should contain ingredients suspected drug specific chemical.

In this year, the incidence of patients with gastric leak (perforated ulcer) increased dramatically. In Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, cases of patients with gastric leak in 2005 some 26 people, in 2006 some 38 people, and from January 2007 through July (6 months) have increased to only 53 patients.

This incidence seems to be increasing. This is similar to studies in Immanuel Hospital, Bandung, in which case the year 2006 no more than 10 people, but in the last six months (January-July 2007) the case reached 40 people and tends to increase. The majority of cases were male (77 percent), in accordance with the incidence in the entire world population. Most are in the age range 50-70 years, with the youngest patient aged 22 years, and the oldest 80 years (average 60 years).

The interesting thing about the cases of gastric leak at the teaching hospital in Bandung that is all patients are herbs consumed higher chronic (chronic) due to rheumatic disease, headache, flu, and so on. Most people buy these herbs from herb shops and not from a trusted manufacturer.

Direct relationship between the consumption of herbs "dark" with the increasing cases of gastric leak very drastic indeed proved not clear. However, the results of anatomic pathology examination (examination of the tissues around the leaking of the stomach wall) shows no signs of H.pylori bacteria that is the cause of most stomach ulcers, mucosal wall, and the malignancy / tumors in the gastric mucosa of the patient.

This raises a hypothesis that other underlying issues, namely consumption of drugs that can irritate the stomach mucosa. One of them is herbs, which according POM mixed with chemical drugs hard.

Some symptoms

Patients with perforated gastric complaints generally come with sudden abdominal pain and felt great in the upper abdomen (solar plexus, similar to the symptoms of ulcer disease), pale face, cold sweat, shortness of breath, fever, and vomiting, especially in the hours The first hour after the leak occurred.

After several hours, the patient usually looks better, less pain, vomiting stopped, temperature and pulse normal, even people with insomnia. However, precisely the period of "intermediate" this is the best time for immediate action in the form of surgery so the patient must be diagnosed quickly and correctly.

In further period (more than 12 hours after gastric leakage occurs), the patient will deteriorate rapidly and began to enter into a state of peritonitis (severe inflammation of the abdominal cavity) and sepsis (infection great. Poisons / toxins the bacteria are spread throughout the body) due to contamination of the abdominal cavity by gastric acid and other stomach contents, in the form of food and digestive enzymes.

If the new patient information is handled in this period, or even longer, the prognosis (chance of happening in people) in these patients will become worse. Especially compounded with patient age generally have advanced, as well as diseases other elderly.

Handling patients who are diagnosed as a gastric perforation is a surgical treatment because of the leak should be sought and closed by the surgeon concerned. Generally, if the patient came in the early periods of illness, patients can complete recovery within 7-10 days.

However, research in the hospital at six months showed only 57 percent of patients with improvement or complete recovery, 22 percent died, the rest brought home forcefully by the family or anything else. In the case of patients who died, declined 89 percent due to surgery or a condition that is very heavy so no longer possible to do anesthesia. This shows that the level of patient awareness (awareness level) of our society is still very low for this case, especially if the doctor who first handled also less aware of this disease.

The best management for patients with gastric perforation is prevention. For, if the leak had occurred stomach, will spend a lot of handling health care costs to be borne by patients, families, hospitals, and the end is our country.

For that, need to be done further research about the direct relationship herbs consumption "dark" with the disease in people with gastric leakage.

(Source: Dr. A Pangayoman SpB Roys, Kompas)

About 141,000 children get government-subsidized school lunches, and 60,000 children have no stable daily source of food outside their schools.

So perhaps gluttonous Las Vegas — which at first seems the most unlikely place for a group of writers to debate agribusiness, global poverty and nutrition — may be a most appropriate place.

UNLV’s Black Mountain Institute and Three Square food bank will host a panel discussion and symposium next week to discuss food and hunger. The institute is bringing three authors from different corners of the food world to discuss how and where Americans get their food and to examine the disparity between the rich man’s food and the poor man’s and why the difference matters.

“For us to do something on different points of view about food — eating, hunger, Americans’ propensity for shoving calories down our throats — is as viable a subject as any we’ve done,” Institute Associate Director Richard Wiley said.

Three Square is using the institute’s panel event as an opportunity to examine how local nonprofit organizations and government agencies can better address the valley’s hunger problems. The food bank will host a symposium Monday among local hunger experts, aid agencies and at least one of the institute panelists to accurately characterize the extent of the problem and examine what to do about it.

“The symposium allows us to take what we’ve all done independently a step further, to gather all the local experts on food and hunger and poverty with global experts to figure out what we can do to close the gap on hunger,” Three Square President Julie Murray said.

The disparity in food quality and supply is key to any discussion of food and hunger, whether global or local. Yet few agree on how best to solve these problems.

The institute’s three panelists hold divergent views on what the world should be growing, distributing and consuming — including whether food should be grown and sold in local markets.

David Mas Masumoto

The author of “Epitaph for a Peach: Four Seasons on My Family Farm,” about his efforts to grow and sell succulent heirloom peaches in California’s San Joaquin Valley, says buying local is not always realistic. The more important issue is who is making the food decisions — the consumer, the farmer, the distributor or the grocery store executive?

Masumoto contends that the consumer has lost more control over his food than he realizes. Produce, including much of the organic food purchased in high-end markets, is hybridized and managed to be easily and cheaply grown and harvested, look immaculate and generally taste like cardboard. Over time, our expectations have changed to the point where this is considered normal and acceptable.

Masumoto tried to change that, one peach at a time, embracing the premise that fruits and vegetables once tasted good, and still should.

It shouldn’t matter that Las Vegas can’t produce much local food, he said. “We all have our ‘foodsheds’ — the places our food comes from,” Masumoto said. “No major city has an agricultural base within its city limits that can support itself. Food has to come from someplace. So Las Vegas has its agricultural base — it may very well be scattered across the world — but I imagine much comes from the Central Valley of California. So in a way, my farm is connected with Las Vegas.”

He said the farmer’s voice is often left out of the food debate and he hopes to bring that perspective to the discussion at UNLV.

He wants people — from restaurateurs to home cooks — to be more aware of where their food is coming from. Most people can’t get their food from within 100 miles of home, but they should know where it is coming from. Every farmer, rancher and fisherman has a business philosophy that frames the choices he makes every day. The more consumers know about the farms that produce their food, the more enlightened they are about the food itself, Masumoto said.

A more sustainable model for future food production calls for preserving and wisely using agricultural land and making wise decisions on water allocation, he said.

“My hope is to rethink our relationships with food — and begin to develop a mental map of these relationships,” he said.

Raj Patel

The author of “Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle For The World Food System,” a book about global hunger and poverty, notes that food doesn’t necessarily end up where it is most needed. Because of the way the global agriculture industry is managed, part of the world is starving, another part has high blood pressure and the wealthiest sliver of world population has enough good, nutritious food at its fingertips to be healthy and fill landfills.

The hunger issue is about more than starving children in Africa, he said; there are children going without breakfast in Henderson and teens struggling with diabetes in North Las Vegas. Unless the valley’s homeless and hungry acquire a taste for nopalitos, mesquite flour and quagga mussels, there’s going to have to be a more global solution, according to Patel’s philosophy. And that solution isn’t necessarily buying expensive organic produce trucked in from Mexico.

Patel is an economist who worked for the United Nations, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization before becoming an outspoken critic of those organizations’ practices and an advocate for the poor. He thinks change can come only through collective action.

“I’m skeptical that people will be able to change the world food situation simply by eating differently. The reason that people are hungry in Nevada today isn’t because people aren’t eating enough high-end olive oil,” Patel said. “It’s a political problem, and there are political actions — from starting a local food policy council to demanding a change in the U.S. Farm Bill.”

Alice Waters

The chef behind the famous Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, Calif., and the author of eight popular cookbooks, Waters is the most prominent — if not most controversial — panel speaker.

She founded Slow Food International, a nonprofit organization that stresses the importance of consuming local, seasonal and sustainably grown foods. She is one of the founders of the slow food and “locavore” movements that have swept the yuppie nation. She advocates not merely buying organic but, more important, buying fresh seasonal food from farmers and ranchers within 100 miles of home.

Her position: Many of the moral and quality problems surrounding food and hunger rest on the heads of corporate farmers and that at least some can be solved by people simply choosing their food more carefully. The mainstream agriculture industry believes this view is naive and unrealistic, that without the industrialization of agriculture, American farmers wouldn’t be able to feed our own population, let alone the world’s. And most of the world’s people have neither the money nor opportunity to buy only the best.

Waters was not available for an interview.

General usage differs between culinary herbs and medicinal herbs. In medicinal or spiritual use any of the parts of the plant might be considered "herbs", including leaves, roots, flowers, seeds, resin, root bark, inner bark (cambium), berries and sometimes the pericarp or other portions of the plant.

Culinary herbs

Culinary use of the term "herb" typically distinguishes between herbs, from the leafy green parts of a plant, and spices, from other parts of the plant, including seeds, berries, bark, root, fruit, and even occasionally dried leaves or roots. Culinary herbs are distinguished from vegetables in that, like spices, they are used in small amounts and provide flavor rather than substance to food.

Some culinary herbs are shrubs (such as rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis), or trees (such as bay laurel, Laurus nobilis) – this contrasts with botanical herbs, which by definition cannot be woody plants. Some plants are used as both a spice and an herb, such as dill seed and dill weed or coriander seeds and coriander leaves.[edit]

Medicinal herbs

Plants contain phytochemicals that have effects on the body. Throughout history, from the Bible, Koran, Vedas and other old texts, the medicinal benefits of herbs are quoted.

There may be some effects when consumed in the small levels that typify culinary "spicing", and some herbs are toxic in larger quantities. For instance, some types of herbal extract, such as the extract of St. John's-wort (Hypericum perforatum) or of kava (Piper methysticum) can be used for medical purposes to relieve depression and stress. However, large amounts of these herbs may lead to poisoning, and should be used with caution. One herb-like substance, called Shilajit, may actually help lower blood glucose levels which is especially important for those suffering from diabetes. Herbs have long been used as the basis of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, with usage dating as far back as the first century CE.[2]

Some herbs are used not only for culinary and medicinal purposes, but also for recreational purposes; one such herb is cannabis.

Sacred herbs

Herbs are used in many religions – such as in Christianity (myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), ague root (Aletris farinosa) and frankincense (Boswellia spp)) and in the partially Christianized Anglo-Saxon pagan Nine Herbs Charm. In Hinduism a form of Basil called Tulsi is worshipped as a goddess for its medicinal value since the Vedic times. Many Hindus have a Tulsi plant in front of their houses.

The shamans in Siberia also used herbs for spiritual purposes. Drugs and plants have been used world wide to induce spiritual experiences.

Pest control

Herbs are also known amongst gardeners to be useful for pest control. Mint, Spearmint, Peppermint, and Pennyroyal are a few of such herbs. These herbs when planted around a house's foundation can help keep unwanted critters away such as flies, mice, ants, flees, moth and tick amongst others. Doctors in two Beijing hospitals told The Hindu the results have so far
been successful.
At Ditan hospital, where most of Beijing?s patients are being treated, doctors
have treated 117 out of 297 admitted patients with the herbal remedy, and 88 of
them have been cured. The others are undergoing treatment.
There have so far been 1,668 reported cases of A(H1N1) flu in China, though no
deaths have been reported. The government?s Ministry of Public Health has
expressed concern that as the winter flu season approaches, the chances of a
serious outbreak are high. With some concern about Tamiflu?s decreasing
resistance to the virus and fears regarding the drug?s side-effects, the
government appears to have given full-backing to promoting a herbal treatment.
Meanwhile, two Chinese pharmaceutical companies this week have begun two
month-long clinical trials for a vaccine to the infection.
In China, treatment and prevention of infections with herbal remedies as
opposed to drugs ? the practice is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
? is common, and the cost-effectiveness of herbal cures has seen a popular
resurgence in TCM in recent years.
TCM, mainly known overseas for its acupuncture therapies, is regarded as
mainstream medicine in China, but not in the West.
The government has now sanctioned hospitals to launch TCM-based treatments for
A(H1N1) on a large scale, Tu Zhitao, dean of the research and education
department at the Beijing Administration of TCM told The Hindu. ?We have found
that Tamiflu is not sufficient, and it also weakens the body and has adverse
affects on body tolerance,? said Mr. Tu.
?This treatment is a better alternative, and we have begun to promote this
treatment among the public.?
Essential difference
Mr. Tu said the essential difference was that while the TCM remedy works to
build up the body?s resistance in a holistic way, the Tamiflu drug focuses on
attacking the infection.
The herbal treatment is a mixture of four locally-used medicinal herbs: Jin yin
hua (lonicera japonica), Da qing ye (Isatis indigodica), Bo he (Mentha
haplocalyx) and Sheng gan cao (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Doctors in Beijing first
began using the remedy on May 15, treating patients with a combination of the
herbal remedy and Tamiflu.
After successful trials, doctors have since June 15 begun prescribing only the
herbal treatment. Ninety per cent of all A(H1N1) flu patients in China have
been treated with a combination of the two treatments. Wang Yuguang, head of
the Centre of Integrated Chinese and Western medicine at Ditan Hospital, said
the treatment time for the herbal remedy was comparable with that of Tamiflu
treatments. The big difference, he said, was the cost of the two treatments.
The TCM remedy only costs between 10 and 13 Yuan (between Rs. 70 and Rs. 91)
per day, while Tamiflu costs 56 Yuan (Rs. 392).
Mr. Wang said the herbal treatment was now undergoing clinical trials ?to show
concrete evidence that the treatment is scientific.?
He said the government had invested 10 million Yuan (Rs. 7 crore) in conducting
a comparative study of herbal and Tamiflu treatments.
Mao Yue, president of the Ditan Hospital, said there was a ?serious
possibility? of a large-scale outbreak of the flu in the autumn and winter of
this year, and that the government has already begun procuring enough herbs to
treat a possible 2 million patients.
Breath-Ezy mengandungi ramuan berikut;
Ramuan Herba :
Perilla Frutescens
Semen Sinapis Alba
Radix Pinella Ternata
Cinnamoni Ramulus
Cinnamomum Cassia
Zingiberis Rz
Glycyrrhiza Rx
seperti berikut;
Applications:
* It has anti-inflammatory effects.
* It antitussive and expectorant effect
Function of the herb:
* It is used to invigorate functions of the heart and spleen for the treatment
of symptoms due to deficiency of vital energy of these viscera.
* Induce antimicrobial activity
* Improves cell functions of liver, lungs and heart
* Promote immunology
Kemudian, anda mungkin teruja membaca fakta berikut;
Clinical research by western scientists has shown that isoflavans from
Glycyrrhiza glabra were able to protect liver and respiratory mitochondria
against oxidative stress and therefore the herb benefits the lung and liver.
14953
Clinical research by western scientists have shown that glabridin from
Glycyrrhiza glabra has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular
protective activities. 77107
This was part of the report sent by Dr. Minh-Tri Nguyen to Dr. Gueunaesl
Rodier, Director, Department of Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response
(CSR), WHO Headquarter ?Viruses are chemical particles having the ability to
replicate only inside a living cell. Each virus particle or viron consist of a
core of a single nucleic acid DNA or RNA surrounding by a protein coat and some
cases by carbohydrates or lipids. Since viruses have no cellular organization,
they have not cellular organism, have no nucleus, no cytoplasm and no
surrounding membrane, they are not alive but rather obligate parasites at
genetic level (require a host cell in order to replicate). They are sensitive to pH change, being reddest in strongly acidic conditions and become more blue as the pH rises. Used in drinks, jams and sugar confectionery.

More on anthocyanins

Beetroot

The colour of beetroot is water soluble and has limited stability when exposed to light, heat and oxygen. It is particularly suited to frozen, dried and short shelf-life products, such as ice creams and yoghurt.

More on beetroot colours

Cochineal

The water soluble pigment carminic acid (carmine) is derived from the female cochineal insect. Introduced into Europe via the Aztecs it has the advantage of being stable when exposed to heat, light and oxygen. Uses include alcoholic beverages and processed meat products.

More on cochineal

Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is the most widely distributed natural plant pigment, present in all green leafy vegetables. It is a green, oil soluble colour. Chlorophyllins are water soluble and relatively stable when exposed to heat and light. Uses include sugar confectionery and dairy products.

More on chlorophyll

Carotenoids

Over 400 different carotenoids have been identified in red/orange/yellow fruits, vegetables and plants. Nature produces carotenoids at the rate of 1000 million tons per year. Most are oil soluble, heat stable and are not affected by pH change. The uses of carotenoids include margarine, dairy products and soft drinks.

More on carotenoids

Curcumin

Turmeric is a well known spice, used widely in cookery. Its pigment, curcumin, is oil soluble and tends to fade in light, but has good heat stability. It gives a lemon yellow shade in food systems. Its applications include curry, soups and confectionery.

More on curcumin

Riboflavin

Riboflavin, Vitamin B2, is used for fortification and colouring. It is water soluble, heat stable and is used in dairy products, cereals and dessert mixes

Carbon and metals

Vegetable carbon black is a heat and light insoluble pigment, used primarily in sugar confectionery. Metals, such as gold, silver and aluminium are used for surface colouring, mainly in confectionary.

For more information on natural colours : http://www.natcol.org

Food-Info.net is an initiative of Wageningen University, The Netherlands

They will kick off their first Organic Takeover Bike Tour, “Peddling for Better Health,” on Sept 2. The bike tour will travel 1,600 miles (40 miles a day) in 40 days.

What started out as a vacation for Nelson blossomed into a traveling cooking show for the chefs.

“I was trying to leave work alone and get away for awhile,” Nelson told the Florida Courier. “When I told the guys about the idea, each one in turn said ‘I want to go.’ So now we’re biking and cooking for people to raise awareness about healthy yet tasty organic cooking alternatives.”

Be Organic serves chicken grown without added hormones. During their bike tour, the chefs will teach Floridians how to make better food choices. Stops to include schools, churches

With stops planned at schools, churches, firehouses, colleges and farmers markets, the chefs will provide information on adding organic to diets, discuss fitness, preventive herbal remedies and green collar jobs all while whipping up dishes that satisfy the pallet.

Hoping to dispel the myth that organic foods are tasteless, expensive and a chore to find, Cherry says few people are aware of what organic really is. “Its just food the way God intended it with no added hormones, preservatives and no chemical pesticides.

“There are no genetic modifications or growth hormones. The chickens and cows get to go outside and have a rest cycle as opposed to chickens, living with the lights on 24 hours a day to deliver in 21 days instead of the normal three to six months it takes from being a chick to being on your plate. They have no access to outdoors – they just keep feeding them and pumping them with hormones,” he explained.

Thechefs were hired to cook for the Obamas while they were campaigning for the presidency last year.Thechefs were hired to cook for the Obamas while they were campaigning for the presidency last year. From brink of diabetes, cancer

Cherry and Desir know firsthand how important diet is to maintain good health.

Cherry has come from the brink of dialysis from type 2 diabetes to being nearly insulin free. “I’ve gone from 60 units of insulin twice a day to 15 units once a day through diet and exercise,” he told the Florida Courier.

Desir was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). While in the hospital, he further learned he had Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer, and was given two months to live. His treatment was interrupted when his insurance stopped paying although he continued to pay nearly $200 a month in premiums.

Organic food helps maintain good health

Desir took it to the media, which found that 20,000 other people were being treated the same way. Insurance started paying again and he received the treatment needed. Now in remission with stem cell transplants, Desir credits organic food with helping him maintain his health. After his hospital stay, he was introduced to Cherry.

“My life was on a thread,” Desir said. “Today the best way I can describe it is I feel like a newborn. The stem cells are producing new cells. I have more energy and if I get a scratch, I notice my body heals faster.

“You have to be conscious of what you’re eating and buying in the store. Turn and look at the label. If you can’t read what it means, it’s not good for you. It took cancer to open my eyes. If I weren’t diagnosed, I would have continued to eat like I did. That is why we feel we have to let people know,” he continued.

Cooked for Obamas

Raising awareness for their bike tour hasn’t been as easy as the chefs thought, especially when they were so well-received at a recent South Beach Food and Wine Festival, cooking for the Obamas while they were campaigning last year, and being featured in various news stories since their inception a few years ago.

Once the bike tour was conceptualized they ramped up their workouts and got LA Fitness to be their first sponsor. During the tour, they will be most in need of the food products, trucks to carry the equipment and donations to defray the costs of maintaining their offices and expenses while on tour. They also will incur additional costs such as gas, room and board and for publicizing their efforts.

When turned down by sponsors, Cherry wonders if they are aware of the potential in African American markets. “From day one they ask the question, who do you work for, where are your partners? Four young Black guys doing this – people don’t think it’s real.”

More sponsors needed

Although Whole Foods features the chefs in-house monthly, they declined to sponsor the tour. The chefs have a corporate account with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, which they use multiple times a month, but aren’t able to confirm them as a sponsor.

“We are struggling against stereotypes. We have to ask ourselves. If we weren’t Black and doing this geared to another community not an urban market would we have funding issues? They think African Americans aren’t interested and don’t want it, but they are so wrong. It just shows how much you don’t understand this market or don’t care about understanding this market. It’s more than frustrating,” Cherry added.

In addition to LA Fitness, confirmed partners and sponsors include the 100 Black Men, Costco in Aventura, the global green chamber of commerce EcoChamber, the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and health conscious businesses Wholelistic Network and Lifemax (Mila).

Herbal tea helps bring 2 together

The bike tour has turned into a mission for the chefs, who seemed to come together through fate to start their catering company. Walker, who grew up in his family’s restaurant business, said his innate feel for the land and growing things led him to Be Organic.

Cherry and Nelson were independently selling herbal teas for the same company when they met. They combined forces, increasing their sales territory to 300 stores in one month. They also discovered that both of their best friends were cousins.

“We had this car and the windows wouldn’t let down – only the sunroof worked. In the sweltering South Florida sun, we had to stick our heads out the sunroof of get air,” Nelson said about promoting their herbal tea business. “Chad would drop me off at one location and go to another – that way we covered more ground. Be Organic grew out of those times, but we really had no idea how well it would be received.

For more information, call Chad Cherry at 561-305-1376, email Beorganic4@gmail or log onto the chefs blog site at www. organictakeover.tumblr.com.

Source : www.flcourier.com

That was what Suheni, a 40 years old teacher, had experienced. In the middle of August 2006, A doctor of dr Sardjito hospital, Yogyakarta, diagnosed her of being suffered from cervical cancer at stadium II B. In order to docile the malignant cells that assault uterus, Suheni had had 6 times chemoteraphy and 25 times radiation. However, 10 months afterwards the cancer cell was back in rage.

Based on the advice of a relative, she finally tried rodent tuber extract in form of capsules. Suheni consumes 2 capsules 3 times in a day. In addition, she also took pearl grass. Her perseverence is unfruitless as she was declared of fully recovered after consuming rodent tuber and pearl grass for 4 months. In Wahyu Suprapto's, a lecturer of the Medical Faculty, Airlangga University, opinion, the anticancer characteristic of rodent tuber is due to its ability to block the development of cancer and tumor cells. That is a research result of Dr Ahmad Ridwan and Rakhmi Ramdani on School of Life Sciences and Technology, Bandung Institute of Technology. It is due to flavonoid compound that has antioxidant properties contained within. The antioxidant impedes the damage of cells in langerhans' island in the pancreas where insulin and glucagon which function to regulate carbohydrate metabolism as well as to control the level of blood sugar are produced.

Use Jamaican cheery leaves, not too old nor too young; the 5 leaves from the tip to be precisely. Decoct 50 - 100 g of Jamaican cherry leaves in 1 liter of water. Bring it to boil and only a half left. Drink the decoction twice in a day. In case using dried leaf extract, infuse 2 - 5 g of the extract in 200 ml of water. Within 15 days consuming Jamaican cherry leaf decoction, blood sugar level goes down 35 - 48%.

Such antidiabetc effect of Jamaican cherry leaves works the same as bitter gourd's Momordica canrantia. A research conducted by Herawati of School of Pharmacy, Bandung Institute of Technology has confirmed that the ethanol extract of bitter gourd of dose 2 g per kg of body weight is able to decrease blood sugar level. This is because plants grow in a naturally nutrient-rich soil.

Non-organic chemical farming methods can speed up growth rates which can change the structure of a plant - resulting in the plant containing more water. Is that a good thing? No because it means the plant will contain less nutrients. In other words when you buy organic produce you get more carrot for your carrot.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are an essential part of a healthy diet. This is because our bodies can not produce them. On the whole, medical experts tell us, we aren’t getting enough. EFAs help us get the most out of the food we eat and are important in preventing heart disease and brain disorders including depression. Organic meat and milk have been shown to have higher levels of essential fatty acids. This is because organic animals eat a natural grass-based diet as opposed to non organic animals that can eat a lot of processed feeds to help them put on weight.
On average organic plants contain between 10 – 15% more phenolics than non organic. Phenolics are important defence compounds. It is believed by some experts that these are helpful in preventing diseases such as cancer.

Over 86% of us say we don’t want pesticides on our food. Yet Government tests repeatedly show that up to a third of non-organic food contains pesticides.
Even food that we think is healthy, such as non-organic Cox's apples, can be sprayed 16 times. There are real concerns about the links with pesticides and cancers, decreasing male fertility, foetal abnormalities and chronic fatigue syndrome to name but a few. Organic farmers predominantly use natural methods to control pests, weeds and disease. So buying organic is one way to reduce the chances that your food contains pesticides.

When lots of animals are kept in cramped, stressful conditions they can become ill quickly. To prevent this non-organic farmers can put antibiotics routinely in their feed. However there are worries that these low level but constant doses may end up making them ineffective when they are used to treat actual diseases in both humans and animals. Organic farmers can only use antibiotics when an animal falls ill. They take many steps to prevent this from happening – such as keeping smaller flocks and herds, giving them a natural diet and ensuring they can free range. Under organic standards, the withdrawal period (time lapse between animal having antibiotics and the meat or milk going on sale) is double or in some cases triple that of non organic standards. This is to ensure that there is no risk of residues.

These days it seems you need to have a chemistry degree to understand some food labels. Some E numbers and other additives have been found damage health. Want to avoid them? Organic standards have banned them.
Genetically modified ingredients are also banned under organic standards. There is mounting evidence to suggest that there are many health problems resulting from this random science. Eating organic food is the only way you can be sure that your food or drink doesn’t contain these ingredients.

In a nutshell, organic food contains more of the essentials and none of the nasties. As Hippocrates said "Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food."
.
Diposkan oleh Jogjakarta Organic Club

"There really isn't that much of a taste difference, but as far as the environment, some things organic are definitely better for the environment."

Tom Reingrover, who owns Gerrards Market in Redlands, said it's the pesticides that drive his customers to buy organic, despite the extra cost.

"If you can consume pesticides versus not, most people would say 'I don't want (the pesticides),'" he said. "Now there's an upside in cost."

Sales of organic food in the United States hit roughly $23 billion in 2008, up 15.8 percent from 2007, according to the Greenfield, Mass.-based Organic Trade Association, a membership-based business association for the organic industry in North America.

Christine Bushway, the association's executive director, said buying organic promotes healthy soil, combats climate change, protects farmers from exposure to harmful chemicals and "benefits the health of our planet in general, and ultimately, those who live on that planet."

But at least one researcher says organic food advocates are like tobacco lobbyists, in that they champion scant evidence for their claims while ignoring decades of proof to the contrary.

"This debate is kind of pathetic because we've been having it for decades," said Alex A. Avery, director of research for the Center for Global Food Issues at the Hudson Institute, a conservative think-tank in Washington, D.C. "They don't like the answer they've been getting."

Avery said organic farming wastes land and water because organic crops get a lower yield on an acre-to-acre basis.

Organic activists engaged in an ideological battle are sabotaging the technological advances that are allowing farmers to be more efficient, while at the same time misleading the public about the effects of pesticides, Avery said.

He compared pesticide residue on crops to that of uranium traces found in cement.

"Does concrete kill you like a nuclear bomb?" he asked. "No. There's a reason why we use pesticides. Because mother nature isn't the tooth fairy. She's a (bad person) who wants to take stuff from us."

josh.dulaney@inlandnewspapers.com

My feeling was that I would use up some of my increasingly abundant free time, save some money on food, and perhaps best of all, began eating more healthy diet. Once more, it would give me a sense of pride. Having something to do keep your mind sound and your spirits from sinking.

I actually have been consuming organic farming for for quite some time, but never really gave it much thought. I guess that I still don't in some ways. I was doing it in such a small scale that I had no idea how huge in industry organic farming really had become. The large corporate farming interests have to find ways to grow huge fields of the same crop, and they can afford expensive measures to control pests without using any unnatural pesticides. I was again a little different in this respect in that I did not have the expertise or resources to fight the little varmints, so I had to get clever so that my organic farming would not be compromised.

The first thing I had to deal with or slug. Did you realize that peer works great for getting rid of slugs? They are attracted to the liquid itself but are then ironically drowned in it. What you might not realize until you try organic farming, is that there are always more slugs out to ravage your crops. You wouldn't believe how much of the pain in the butt these little fellas are. But I found that they weren't even the worst of it. Little bunny rabbits or a huge threat to my organic farming venture. You see, unlike my neighbors,

I never have sprayed my lawn, so I have always had a family of cute little bunnies living in my yard. But there are two things bunnies are known for, and the lesser known one is equally impressive. You wouldn't believe the voracious appetites on these little guys and gals. As for carrots, it's not fictionFeature Articles, they really do love them. Organic farming is wonderful but you had better be prepared to roll up your sleeves and put in the work.
