This book is definitly written for those of us that are just starting out in the field of box making. Freedman is what I refer to as a "Master". He not only can do it, he can teach it.
I found myself constantly saying to myself, "so thats how ya do that, man thats easy". With enough projects and plans to keep you busy for months, and clear instructions on how to accomplish some very nice decorative touch's, this book is must read for anyone who is just getting started making decorative box's. I really like the way he incorporates the "little" things that really help you along, but probably would have taken me years to think of. Great book, can't give it a high enough rating.

We were looking for a less expensive, starter bedroom suite and decided to give this one a try. It arrived about 12 days later via Fedex curbside. I was slightly disappointed when the delivery person told me they don't do stairs or bring the furniture inside. That is a Fedex issue, but then again you aren't given any shipping options at checkout. The package itself came boxed up on a crate and the boxes were a bit beaten up so I was a little worried that the furniture was going to be damaged. Upon unpacking we were relieved to find no damage whatsoever.
The color is a nice dark wood with a shiny polish coating. The bed was very easy to put together and everything is relatively lightweight. The dresser is the heaviest piece at 116 lbs. The dresser itself is not very deep so is perfect for our smaller bedroom. So far we're very happy with this purchase and will think about buying the taller dresser that is sold separately later on. I gave it four stars because the quality does not seem as high and the durability not as great as something you might find at a pricier furniture store, but for what we needed and for the price this was a great buy.

I've had this bed for almost 3 years now and stil love it. It is sturdy, doesn't squeak, and easy to care for. One important note: I got mine from allplatformbeds.com and when received, it wasn't set up for the mattress to sit down into the frame (like in the picture). Instead, the supports for the slats were higher along the side rails so that the mattress lays on top of the bed, like a true platform bed.

I'll admit to having tinkered with it some... but it has held up wonderfully and still looks great (without dings etc). For those who aren't so sure about the curved top: the first week I had it, I cut off the top piece you see in the picture with patience and a hand saw (there are just two posts that run up the back and hold the horizontal pieces on), and used a stain pen to color dark the exposed raw wood. You can't see the cut portion at all, even standing at the foot of the bed, and the remaining flat, slightly lower top piece to the headboard makes it look much more modern. I HIGHLY recommend that modification; it looks very sleek

I bought this trunk and the matching sofa table at Levin's furniture. Oddly, I had viewed this picture online and didn't think much of it. However while shopping at Levin my husband and I fell instantly in love with the set. It is GORGEOUS in person. There is such elegant detail that did not translate in these pictures. It was a sturdy solid set. It is also more expensive at Levin's (of course) but we bought it there to avoid shipping issues and for their warranty. I would absolutely recommend this set.

Eight-legged Wooden Walking Table

Well, I suppose that someone was bound to make it sooner or later, but this wooden table can walk.

In case you are wondering, it isn’t a table that can walk on its own through motorized power. If you watch the video, it looks like the walking only works if someone is pushing it. You can watch the video after the jump to see it in motion.

I really don’t think it would have been that much trouble to put a motor on this thing, but I didn’t make it. It was Wouter Scheublin who designed it, and I don’t think I have a right to critique him. After all, I have been trying to make a walking Lego toy for years.

If you haven’t watched the video, then you should check out the spider-like crawls. It reminds me of something from War of the Worlds, and if it could go across the room on its own power, I think that The Sorcerer’s Apprentice would be the proper soundtrack.

I wonder if Mr. Scheubin got the idea from a scene in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace with a scene where a throne is walking on mechanical legs. I wonder how stable this table is. In other words, could you move this table with a drink on it?

It doesn’t look like you can buy one of these, but I’m sure people will want them because it is rather neat. I guess a table with wheels is just not good enough.

Creepy robotic furniture

People have a strange way of anthropomorphizing objects around them — giving inanimate objects feelings and other human traits. A group of Museum of Fine Arts students in Boston have taken this one step further, making robotic pieces of furniture that actually respond to human presence and tire after being used.

The robots, dubbed Emoti-bots, consist of a lamp and a chair — appropriately named the Emoti-lamp and Emoti-chair. They are designed portray emotion, to make you "...question the potential of the objects around us and envision them as evolved future objects."

The Emoti-lamp has sensors placed throughout its body designed to detect the presence of someone nearby, at which point little circles reach out, trying to touch the hapless passerby. It also has little flexible rods on the top with LEDs attached that droop after being used for a while, presumably because it is tired.

The Emoti-chair is made out of stylish circles that react to touch, leaving an outline of your hand when you walk away. It's mounted on top of a modified Roomba, allowing it to wander around, seeking out a new purpose in life when no one is using it.

The Emoti-bots are currently on display at Parsons in New York. Be sure to check out the video above to see them in action.

Many work with a heavy slouch—and while this may be comfortable and give you a nonchalant cool dude vibe, it's wrecking your back. The Wigli forces you to work your butt off (lest you fall onto it).
Wigli claims that even the fanciest designy ergonomic chairs don't do your lower body justice—allowing your muscles to slide into touch typing ruin, and leading to pain. Their solution is a stool—crafted from solid beech and rubber—that demands constant attention from lower back and stomach to stay upright. To me, this sounds incredibly irritating—I think I'd prefer to slowly atrophy as I write than to be constantly clenching and micro-adjusting my lower body. Then again, I'll probably be writing from a hospital bed within a few years. Once you get used to it—assuming you do—it's definitely a clever design. Those of you with wills and buns of steel will probably love this thing, and your backs will thank you for it down the line. [Wigli via Gadget Lab]
