Afridi Clinches Thriller Against India

2014-03-02T21:04:00.000-08:00

Shahid Afridi displayed a stupendous show in the end to script a dramatic victory for Pakistan against India and virtually knock them out of the Asia Cup at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur on Sunday.
Sohaib Maqsood got run out, Umar Gul and Mohammad Talha were caught in the deep. And in some form of poetic justice, Saeed Ajmal was bowled around his legs by Ashwin’s carom ball. Pakistan were throwing away a game like only they knew how to. Their last line of offence was an out-of-form Shahid Afridi.
One day past the official age of 34, the Pathan blocked a few. And then, like an amnesiac axe-man struggling to recall the purpose of his weapon, he started swinging away. He slogged Jadeja for a six, swept Bhuvaneshwar Kumar for four and took his team into the last over needing 10.
Virat Kohli trusted Ashwin for the over. Ashwin dismissed Ajmal. Afridi returned to strike. Ashwin bowled a flat, short ball outside the off-stump. Afridi made some room. He flat-batted it over extra-cover for six. It's not the direction in which such deliveries ever travel to. But Afridi has been known to do crazier things. Ashwin tried the ball again. Afridi made some room again. He swung it over long-on.
Ravichandran Ashwin struck at the crucial time to dismiss Mohammad Hafeez. Hafeez hit a gritty half-ton to revive Pakistan's innings after quick wickets in their chase of 246. Hafeez's fifty came off 82 balls and took Pakistan total past 150-mark after they were reduced to 113/4 in the 23rd over. He also added 50-run stand with Sohaib Maqsood for the fifth wicket to frustrate India.
Amit Mishra justified his inclusion with double strike and led Indian fightback. Pakistan failed to capitalise the start given by their openers as they started losing wickets at regular intervals.
Mishra gave Pakistan a huge blow in the form of Umar Akmal and leave them stuttering at 113/4 in 22.2 overs.
India made a brief comeback when Ravichandran Ashwin and Mishra struck in quick succession to dismiss Sharjeel Khan and Ahmed Shehzad respectively.
Pakistan suffered a massive blow soon after when their skipper Misbah-ul-Haq got run-out in a huge mix-up with Mohammad Hafeez.
Shehzad and Sharjeel gave Pakistan brisk start as they added 71 runs in 11 overs to lay the foundation for their team
Sharjeel smashed a six over mid wicket off Mohammed Shami to take Pakistan past 50 runs in the 8th over.
Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja (52) hit a timely unbeaten half-century as India recovered from a mid-innings collapse to post a modest 245 for eight.
Opener Rohit Sharma (56), who finally found his touch after a lean patch, and Ambati Rayudu (58) also did their bit but none of the batsman could make it big. However, India had at least something on board to fight for.
Rayudu scored 58 from 62 balls, while Jadeja was unbeaten on 52 from 49 balls (4x4, 2x6).
Experienced spinner Saeed Ajmal (3/40) bowled nicely in the death overs to remove three batsmen while debutant pacer Mohammad Talha (2/22) and off-spinner Mohammed Hafeez (2/38) took two wickets apiece.
Jadeja made full use of his reprieve on 12 when Hafeez dropped a sitter to post his ninth century.
It was Hafeez, who trapped Dhawan to give Pakistan their first breakthrough but India had the match in control with Sharma and Kohli in the middle.
Sharma's approach was different from what he looked after a poor outing in South Africa and New Zealand.
He pulled Gul over square leg to break free and he showed no mercy against pacer Junaid Khan, punching the left arm pacer for consecutive six and four.
Victim of Sharma's assault, Khan conceded 25 runs from his three overs before being taken away.
The duo mostly scored in boundaries and added a quick 38 runs from 36 balls before Gul gave Pakistan the biggest breakthrough in Kohli.
It turned out to be a soft dismissal as the in-form Indian skipper was done in by an away going delivery when he edged it to the wicketkeeper, looking to work it away towards the third man.
Sharma cruised to his 22nd half-century in just 44 balls with seven fours and two sixes but he could not make it big after getting out on a rash shot.
At a time when India needed to play sensibly, Kohli, India's top batsmen did not show any patience, and Sharma was no different.
When the situation demanded him to carry his innings forward, Sharma offered a loose pull shot top-edging a short pitched ball to hand debutant Talha his first ODI wicket.
Hafeez took a running catch to dismiss Sharma and almost collided with Pakistan opener Sharjeel Khan who had to go out of the ground after hurting his knee.
Talha was impressive with his pace and bowled to a steady line as he dried up the boundaries.
Looking to improvise and work the ball over midwicket, Rahane found Hafeez who took a sharp rising catch to give Talha a second wicket.
Talha had an impressive first spell of 7-1-22-2 that plummeted India's run-rate especially when Dhoni was not there to step up down the order.
With the spin duo of Hafeez and Ajmal, Pakistan gave away only 21 runs in the batting powerplay that also yielded the wicket of Karthik.
Earlier, Pakistan have won the toss and opted to bowl.

One change of each team -- in Pakistan Mohammad Talha debut in for Anwar Ali while in India Amit Mishra brought back for Stuart Binny.

Australia v England 3rd Test Perth Report

2014-01-03T19:13:00.000-08:00

Australia were all out for 326, after being sent into bat by England, late on the opening day of the final Ashes Test on Friday.
England were 1 for 8 at stump, trial by 318 runs
Steve Smith was last man out for 115 with Ben Stokes taking six for 99 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Stokes captured three wickets in his last over and had Smith caught at mid-on by substitute Joe Root.
Australia fought back from 97 for five to put the pressure back on to England in their chase for a 5-0 series clean sweep.
Brad Haddin scored 75 in a 128-run sixth-wicket stand with Smith that rescued the Australian first innings.
Australia, put in by England, were reduced to a parlous 5 for 97 shortly after lunch.
Wicketkeeper Haddin reached his half-century off 70 balls with a quick single off Ben Stokes shortly before the interval, after coming to the crease following the dismissal of George Bailey for another low score.
Haddin, who has played a crucial role in rescuing Australia on a number of occasions in the one-sided Ashes, now has five 50s and a century in the series.
Bailey, likely playing for his Test place, was dismissed for just one, nibbling at paceman Stuart Broad and edging a catch to Alastair Cook at first slip, who clung on at the second attempt.
England claimed four wickets before lunch after skipper Cook won the toss for the first time in the series.
Stokes dismissed opener Chris Rogers (11) and skipper Michael Clarke (10) and in the final over of the morning James Anderson trapped Shane Watson leg before wicket for 43.
Rogers, who scored 116 in Australia's eight-wicket victory in the fourth Test, attempted to pull only to drag the ball on to his leg stump.
And Stokes claimed the big breakthrough when he coaxed an edge off Clarke to Ian Bell in the slips.
Australia lost the wicket of David Warner in the first hour, bowled by Stuart Broad for 16.
England had a setback when Test debutant Boyd Rankin pulled up with a hamstring injury bowling in his ninth over and left the ground for treatment.
Rankin was among three English changes from Melbourne, with Test debuts also for middle-order batsman Gary Ballance and leg-spinner Scott Borthwick.
Australia, who are chasing a 5-0 sweep for only the third time in Ashes history, remained unchanged for the fifth consecutive Test after all-rounder Watson (groin) and paceman Ryan Harris (knee) were cleared to play.
England sprung a surprise by dropping Joe Root and elevating Ian Bell to number three, while Michael Carberry kept his place at the top of the order, despite concerns over his slow rate of scoring.

Young leg-spinner Borthwick came in for Monty Panesar, while speedster Rankin got his chance at the expense of Tim Bresnan.

Australia, who have made a stunning turnaround since their 3-0 Ashes series defeat in England just months ago, named an unchanged XI for the fifth straight Test match.

Teams:

Australia: David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Michael Clarke (capt), Steve Smith, George Bailey, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris, Nathan Lyon.

England: Alastair Cook (capt), Michael Carberry, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Gary Ballance, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Boyd Rankin, Scott Borthwick.

Live Cricket Scores - Mathews Ton Hands Sri Lanka Advantage

2014-01-03T19:05:00.000-08:00

Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews hit a pugnacious hundred to pull Sri Lanka out of trouble on the fourth day of the first Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Mathews notched up 116 not out under pressure for his second Test hundred and put on invaluable 138-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Dinesh Chandimal (89) and 99 for the unfinished sixth wicket with Prasanna Jayawardene (48 not out) to take Sri Lanka to 420/5 at close at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Sri Lanka resumed the day at 186/4, but Mathews' career-best score and resolute innings by Chandimal and Prasanna helped Sri Lanka add 234 runs for the loss of only one wicket.

They now lead by 241 runs and with five wickets intact can harbour hopes of an unlikely win on the fifth and final day or at least salvage a draw.

Mathews batted with resolve, blunting off-spinner Saeed Ajmal and had the better of Pakistan's three-pronged pace attack, reaching his hundred in the final session, taking two off Bhatti. His hundred came off 239 balls.

In all the Sri Lankan captain batted for 370 minutes, hitting 12 boundaries and six off Ajmal, who conceded 96 runs in 42 wicket-less overs.

Neither Mathews nor Chandimal were bothered at all and even the second new ball, taken at 249/4, failed to benefit Pakistan with a wicket as Sri Lanka reached 285/4 at lunch.

Pakistan had one chance to dismiss Chandimal in the second over after lunch when a edge off Bilawal Bhatti flew close to Ahmed Shehzad's outstretched hands in the second slip when the batsman was 71.

Finally, Junaid broke the stand at 324 when he had Chandmial caught at deep fine-leg off a miscued hook. Chandimal batted for 251 minutes and hit a dozen boundaries.

But even after Chandimal's exit, Mathews and Prasanna batted without any problems to leave Pakistani bowlers frustrated.

Mathews's previous best of 105 not out came against Australia at Colombo in 2011 and followed up his 91 in Sri Lanka's first innings total of 204. Pakistan had made 383 in their first knock.

Prasanna has so far hit five fours and six in his able assistance of Mathews.

Left-arm paceman Junaid was the best Pakistani bowler with 3-81 while fellow fast bowler Bilawal Bhatti took 2-131.

Pakistan started the day on a wrong note when wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal was ruled out of the three-Test series with a fractured finger and Younis Khan had to keep wickets.

Sarfraz Ahmed has been summoned as Akmal's replacement for the next two Tests, second in Dubai (January 8-12) and Sharjah (January 16-20).

Brief scores
Sri Lanka 204 (Mathews 91, Junaid Khan 5-58)) and 420 for 5 (Mathews 116*, Chandimal 89)
Pakistan 383 (Younis Khan 136, Misbah-ul Haq 135, Eranga 3-38, Herath 3-93)
Status Sri Lanka lead by 241 runs

Ton-ups Smith, De Villiers punish Pak

2013-10-24T20:13:00.002-07:00

Graeme Smith smashed a double century and AB de Villiers hit a robust hundred to guide South Africa to an imperious position in the must-win second Test against Pakistan in Dubai on Thursday.
South African skipper made 227 not out for his fifth double ton while De Villiers -- dropped off the first delivery by wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal off paceman Mohammad Irfan -- was unbeaten on 157 for his 17th Test century.
The duo plundered a hapless Pakistan attack to take South Africa to 460-4 at close on the second day, giving them a big 361-run lead with three full days to play to force a series-levelling win.
Pakistan won the first Test by seven wickets in Abu Dhabi last week. Smith and De Villiers have set an all time South African record for the fifth wicket in Tests with 326, beating the previous best of 267 set by Jacques Kallis and Ashwell Prince against the West Indies at Antigua in 2005.
The experienced duo plundered Pakistan's spin-cum pace attack on Dubai stadium pitch which gave little help to the bowlers who only managed to dismiss nightwatchman Dale Steyn (seven) in the first hour.
Smith reached his fifth double hundred with a couple off spinner Zulfiqar Babar towards mid-wicket, also completing 9,000 runs in 112 Tests.
He is the 12th batsmen in all Test cricket to reach 9,000 and second behind team-mate Jacques Kallis who so far has 13,140 runs in 164 Tests.
The South African captain, seeking to keep his team's unbeaten run away from home since losing to Sri Lanka in 2006, raised his arms to the applause of his teammates.
In all Smith has hit 16 boundaries off 367 deliveries of complete domination. De Villiers was in more punishing mood, having hit 16 boundaries and a six off 262 balls.
Pakistan keeper faltered once more when he dropped Smith off spinner Zulfiqar Babar when the batsman was on 202, capping a miserable day for his team.
Smith hit spinner Saeed Ajmal for three consecutive boundaries to reach his 9th score of 150 plus.
Smith, overnight 67, anchored the innings and reached his century with a straight drive off Ajmal for his only sixth boundary. It took Smith 204 balls to reach the milestone.
Pakistan took the new ball straightaway after the 80th over but it only upped the scoring rate with de Villiers hitting Irfan for two successive boundaries and one off Babar to bring up his fifty.
He also completed 1,000 runs against Pakistan in 12 Tests. Resuming at 128-3, South Africa lost Steyn in the seventh over of the day, bowled for seven as he offered no stroke to a Irfan delivery.
Irfan, who bowled at good pace, could have had De Villiers off the very next ball but Akmal failed to hold on to a edge towards his right.

Pakistani spinners led by Saeed Ajmal (2-132) bowled tirelessly but failed to exploit any turn on a pitch that was expected to give slow bowlers help.

Irfan had figures of 84-1 in 27 overs, while Babar had figures of 1-112.

Brief scores
Pakistan 99 (Tahir 5-32, Steyn 3-38)
South Africa 460 for 4 (Smith 227*, de Villiers 157*)
Status South Africa lead by 361 runs

Indian Sunrisers Take on Caribbean T&T

2013-09-23T19:43:00.000-07:00

Keen to get into winning ways, qualifiers Sunrisers Hyderabad would not be taking a fired up Trinidad and Tobago lightly when the two sides square off in their Group B clash of the Champions League Twenty20 on Tuesday.
The Sunrisers, who lost their final qualification tie, would be looking to put their best foot forward against the Caribbean side whose confidence would be sky high after successfully defending a low total against Brisbane Heats in their opening group match on Sunday.
The experience of playing at the Mohali's PCA track in the qualifiers would help the Sunrisers in their pursuit to get off to a strong start in the group.
Skipper Shikhar Dhawan looked in ominous touch in the qualifiers and would be expected to bat for as many overs as possible and pile up the runs, while all-rounder Thisara Perera would be banked upon to provide the impetuous.
The Hyderabad franchise is expected to field the same team with overseas players JP Duminy, Cameron White and Darren Sammy forming the crust of their middle order.
Their bowling, too, looks in good shape with South African speedster Dale Steyn leading the pack of India internationals Amit Mishra and Ishant Sharma.
The Sunrisers possess a very incisive bowling attack, one with lots of variety. While Steyn and Sharma would be expected to bowl fast and rattle the T&T top order, spinners like Mishra, Karan Sharma and Duminy offer a lot of options to the skipper in the middle overs.
On paper, the Sunrisers look a far stronger unit but they would be wary of the inaugural edition finalist's ability on sprang up surprises with their combative team spirit.
The Islanders will aim to uphold the momentum and seek to emulate their performance in the inaugural season when they took the tournament by storm by reaching the final in 2009.
For T&T, their bowling is their strength, led by pacer Ravi Rampaul and mystery spinner Sunil Narine, who delivered the goods at Ranchi by taking six wickets between them.
Rampaul was terrific both at the start as well as the latter part of the innings to help script a 25-run victory for his side, while Narine was at its deceptive best.
The T&T camp would be hoping for another disciplined show from their bowlers at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium where the wicket is likely to produce a run feast.
However, their batting looked unsteady in Ranchi with only skipper Denesh Ramdin getting some runs under his belt. The likes of Lendl Simmons, Darren Bravo and Sherwin Ganga would be hoping to make significant contributions in the upcoming match.

2013-09-03T02:01:00.000-07:00

A huge majority of players have declared their allegiances to IPL franchises over their respective countries' domestic sides ahead of the upcoming Champions League Twenty20, with Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara being the only exception.

10 out of the 12 international cricketers have chosen to play for the IPL franchises instead of their domestic sides competing in the $6 million event starting on September 21.

While Sangakkara will be turning out for Sri Lanka's Kandurata Maroons instead of his IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad, players such as Mike Hussey, Dwayne Bravo and Shane Watson will be playing for the Indian clubs.

IPL 6 winners Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals will kick start the 2013 CLT20 with a Group A match in Jaipur on September 21 in a tournament which will witness the world's 12 best domestic teams fighting it out for the coveted prize.

A total of 29 matches will be played. Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals apart, Group A will comprise Highveld Lions (winner of South Africa's domestic T20 competition), Perth Scorchers (KFC T20 Big Bash League runner-up), and a team from the Qualifier.

The CLT20 2013 will follow a format similar to the two previous editions, with a group stage preceded by a qualifier.

The qualifier, to be played from September 17 to 20 will feature four teams: Q1 - Otago Volts (New Zealand's HRV Cup champions), Q2 - Sunrisers Hyderabad (Fourth-ranked team in the Pepsi IPL 2013), Q3 - Kandurata Maroons, the winner of Sri Lanka's domestic T20 competition, and Q4 - Faisalabad Wolves (Pakistan's domestic T20 Champions).

Sri Lanka 2-0 up Against South Africa

2013-07-23T22:21:00.001-07:00

Rangana Herath took two crucial wickets as Sri Lanka defeated South Africa in the rain-affected one-dayer in Colombo on Tuesday, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
South Africa, set a revised target of 176 from 29 overs, were 104-5 in 21 overs when a heavy downpour at the Premadasa stadium forced the match to be called off.
With 121-5 being the par score at that stage, the Proteas lost by 17 runs to suffer their second defeat in the series following the 180-run loss in the first match last Saturday.
Left-arm spinner Herath trapped opener Alviro Petersen leg-before for 24, and had Faf du Plessis caught behind to reduce the Proteas to 69-5 by the 14th over.
David Miller (22 not out) and Ryan McLaren (14 not out) put on 35 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket before rain ruined their hopes of pulling off an upset.
South Africa were dealt another blow as star batsman Hashim Amla injured his left knee while fielding and was rushed to hospital for precautionary scans.
Amla, who had been sidelined for the first match due to a strained back, was unable to bat and faces a race against time to be fit for the third match in Pallekele on Friday.
Earlier, fast bowler Morne Morkel claimed 3-34 as the hosts were restricted to 223-9 in 49.2 overs after they won the toss and elected to bat.
Sri Lanka's stand-in captain Dinesh Chandimal and opener Tillakaratne Dilshan top-scored with 43 apiece before heavy rain ended the innings with four deliveries still to be bowled.
South Africa regrouped after the heavy defeat in the first match to keep the free-stroking Sri Lankan batsmen in check on the slow wicket.
Sri Lanka lost opener Upul Tharanga in the fourth over before a second wicket stand of 59 between Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara helped them recover to 66-1 in the 18th over.
Sangakkara, who smashed a career-best 169 on Saturday, hit six boundaries in his 37 before he mistimed a drive off left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso and was caught in the covers.
South Africa pegged the hosts down to 123-4 in 30 overs as Mahela Jayawardene was bowled by Robin Peterson for 17 and Dilshan was caught behind off Morkel soon after.
Chandimal, leading Sri Lanka in place of the banned Angelo Mathews, boosted the total with four boundaries in his 51-ball innings.

Two Sri Lankan umpires officiated after Australia's Rod Tucker, who was due to stand at one end, fell ill before the start.
Earlier, Sri Lanka have won the toss and elected to bat..
One change for the tourist, Hashim Amla is back in place of Colin Ingram. The hosts remain unchanged.
Match has been 30-minutes delayed.

Teams:

Sri Lanka: Upul Tharanga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Dinesh Chandimal (Captain), Jehan Mubarak, Rangana Herath, Shaminda Eranga, Lasith Malinga

Chandimal Youngest Sri Lanka ODI Captain

2013-07-19T02:19:00.000-07:00

Young Dinesh Chandimal will lead Sri Lanka in the first two of the five ODIs against visiting South Africa in an stop-gap arrangement in the absence of regular captain Angelo Mathews.
The 23-year-old Chandimal was named to captain the home side as Mathews is currently serving a two-match ban for slow over rates during the recent triangular series involving West Indies and India in the West Indies.
Left-handed middle order batsman Lahiru Thirimanna has been named the new vice-captain in the 15-member squad announced by Sri Lanka Cricket today.
Senior batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan, who missed the tri-series in the West Indies due to an injury, returns to the side and will partner Upul Tharanga for the opening wicket.
Thisara Perera also returns at the expense of the spinning all-rounder Jeewan Mendis. Also making a comeback after a long lay off is Jehan Mubarak.
There is no place for the young opening bat, left-hander Kusal Janith Perera. His run of poor form in the Champions Trophy in England has kept him out.
The first ODI will be played on July 20.

Sri Lanka squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Lahiru Thirimanne (vice capt), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Angelo Perera, Jehan Mubarak, Rangana Herath, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal

Moin Khan Appointed Chief Selector

Pakistan's cricket bosses on Monday appointed former captain Moin Khan as chief selector, a post he said he took on as a challenge.
The 41-year-old takes over from Iqbal Qasim, who stepped aside earlier this month in a move seen as a reaction to the team's miserable performance in the Champions Trophy in England.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Khan held discussion with interim chairman Najam Sethi and accepted the role.
"Former captain and wicket-keeper Khan will take over as chief selector while the rest of the members of the committee will remain the same," a PCB release said.
Former left-arm paceman Salim Jaffer, Test batsman Azhar Khan, Farrukh Zaman and Asif Baloch are the other selectors.
Moin Khan said he accepted the role as a challenge.
"It is an honour and a privilege to be offered the position of chairman of national selection committee -- a position held by many greats in the past and most recently by legendary spinner Qasim," he was quoted as saying in the release.
Khan played 69 Tests and 219 one-day internationals for Pakistan in 1990s and was also a member of World Cup winning team in 1992.
Last week the Islamabad high court ordered Sethi to hold elections for the PCB chairman within 90 days.

Malik, Kamran Dropped From West Indies Probables

2013-06-26T01:16:00.002-07:00

The Pakistan selectors on Saturday decided to drop the senior trio of Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal and Imran Farhat from the probables list in the wake of team's failure in the Champions Trophy but at the same time recalled veterans Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan for West Indies tour.
A reliable source in the board said that 20-member probables list has been submitted to the Pakistan Cricket Board.
"The list also includes several new players who have done well at the domestic level or have played in the recent past for the national team," the source disclosed.
The new players in the list include openers Ahmed Shahzad and Khurrum Manzoor, middle order batsmen Sohaib Maqsood and Haris Sohail, all-rounders Hammad Azam and Muhammad Nawaz.
Faisal Iqbal, Umar Akmal and pace bowler Aizaz Cheema have been recalled.
"Wicketkeepers Adnan Akmal and Sarfaraz Ahmed are included in the probables list," he said.
The selectors had met with head coach Dav Whatmore in Lahore this week to discuss the performance of the team in the Champions Trophy and plans for the forthcoming tours.
Pakistan will play five one-day internationals and two T20 matches on their tour to the West Indies followed by one-dayers against Zimbabwe in mid August.
The team is due to leave on July 7 for the West Indies and it has been learnt that the selectors had submitted names to the board so that visa processing can start.

Sreesanth, Chavan and Chandila Arrested for Spot Fixing

2013-05-19T00:09:00.001-07:00

In a high profile operation, Delhi Police Special Cell arrested cricketer S Sreesanth and two other cricketers on charges of spot-fixing. Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila have been arrested as well with Seven bookies.
The initial interrogation have revealed that the parts of IPL matches at Mohali and Mumbai were fixed.
Special CP Special Cell SN Shrivastava is supervising the entire operation. The role of more players is suspected, a source says.
Sources said that a team led by DCP Sanjeev Yadav were camping in Mumbai to execute this covert operation. They were acting on a tip-off followed by call interception of players and bookies.
The police team had waited to get proper evidence against the players and let go of two opportunities earlier even though they had prima facie proof of spot-fixing.
Finally the arrests happened on late Wednesday night at hotel Trident in Mumbai.
The cops have recovered money and proof of transaction between players and bookies.
The accused will be brought to Delhi on a transit remand after being produced at a Mumbai court. They will be interrogated to get to the core of conspiracy.
Spot-fixing is different from match fixing as the whole match and the result is not fixed but parts of the match are fixed such as balls, sixes and fours at particular times.
The franchise issued a statement saying that had been "taken by surprise" by the development.
A case has been registered at the Marine Drive police station in Mumbai under sections 420, which deals with cheating, and 120 (b), which deals with criminal conspiracy. The players are in the custody of Delhi police.

Mushfiqur Resigns as Bangladesh Captain

2013-05-10T02:29:00.001-07:00

Mushfiqur Rahim will quit as captain of Bangladesh after two Twenty20 internationals against Zimbabwe this weekend.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur made the announcement after Bangladesh lost the third one-day international by seven wickets on Wednesday, conceding a one-day series to Zimbabwe despite beating them by a record margin in the first match.
The Tigers began their tour of Zimbabwe as favourites after an encouraging trip to Sri Lanka, but lost the first Test by 335 runs before winning the second to earn a share of the series.
"This is probably my last tour as captain," he told reporters after Wednesday's defeat. "I will resign once we get back to Dhaka.
"The reason is the way we lost the games and at the same time I failed to perform. I think I failed to lead my team, so the two T20 matches will be my last as captain."
The 24-year-old only took over as Bangladesh captain in September 2011, after his predecessor Shakib Al Hasan was removed from the job.
Shakib's dismissal also came in the wake of a tour to Zimbabwe, when the African side won the one-off Test that signalled their return to the five-day game and triumphed 3-2 in the one-day series that followed.

Umar Gul Out of Champions Trophy With Knee Injury

2013-05-04T01:27:00.000-07:00

Pakistan's Champions Trophy challenge suffered a major blow on Thursday as pace spearhead Umar Gul was ruled out with a knee injury that will keep him out of action for up to 12 weeks.
The 29-year-old complained of knee trouble during last month's tour of South Africa and was sidelined after playing the first two games of the five-match one-day series.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Gul would head to Australia for an operation next month.
"Gul complained of right knee pain during the South Africa tour. He was rested for imminent damage to his medial meniscus and bone of right knee. On his arrival back to Pakistan he underwent MRI scan which confirmed knee problem," a PCB release said.
Gul's initial reports were sent to Australia where a specialist advised surgery and rest and gave a timeframe of 8-12 weeks for full recovery. The PCB said they hoped the operation would go ahead in Melbourne early next month.
The bowler has taken 163 wickets in 47 Tests and 167 in 116 one-day internationals. He is also the leading wicket-taker in Twenty20 internationals with 74 in 52 matches.
Pakistan are in Group B alongside India, the West Indies and South Africa in the Champions Trophy to be played in England from June 6-23.
Defending champions Australia, Sri Lanka, England and New Zealand form Group A.

Ziaur Five Bowls Bangladesh to Big Win

2013-05-04T01:14:00.000-07:00

Ziaur Rahman's maiden five-wicket haul in just his fourth one-day international saw Bangladesh record a comprehensive 121-run victory over Zimbabwe in the first of a three-match series in Bulawayo.

After Shafiul Islam's strikes put Zimbabwe on the back foot early in their chase of 270, Ziaur's five for 30 snuffed out any hope of a revival as the hosts were bowled out for 148.
Although Bangladesh have a healthy record at Queens Sports Club, winning six out of eight one-dayers before this encounter, the margin by which Zimbabwe lost led captain Brendan Taylor to brand the defeat a "shocker".
Despite losing Regis Chakabva and Pakistan-born debutant Sikandar Raza in the opening four overs of their reply, Zimbabwe recovered through Taylor's 33 and Hamilton Masakadza's 38.
However, when Taylor was bowled by Abdur Razzak the floodgates soon opened, as Zimbabwe lost four wickets without adding a run to slump to 93 for seven.
Three of those dismissals were to Ziaur, who returned later to find reverse swing and grab the wickets of Malcolm Waller and Tinashe Panyangara.
When Shingirai Masakadza's spirited knock of 33 from as many deliveries was ended by Robiul Islam, Bangladesh had a handsome victory.
Bangladesh were also indebted to Nasir Hossain, who continued his good form with the bat in rescuing Bangladesh from a mid-innings collapse.
The tourists made a steady start after being put in to bat - with Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful putting on 65 for the first wicket - only for Shingirai Masakadza to remove the pair in his opening two overs and then Mushfiqur Rahim in his fifth.
With Shakib Al Hasan also run out for a single, Bangladesh had slumped to 94 for four, but Nasir came in with confidence high after his 77 and 67 not out in Bangladesh's second-Test victory.
He duly added 76 with Mominul Haque, then 44 in seven overs with Mahmudullah, before holing out to deep point for a run-a-ball 68.
Shingirai Masakadza's 4 for 51 was somewhat negated by the 18 wides Zimbabwe bowled, but ultimately it was the home side's batting and Ziaur's bowling that ensured a one-sided result.

Brief scores
Bangladesh 269 for 8 (Nasir 68, S Masakadza 4-51)
Zimbabwe 148 (H Masakadza 38, Ziaur 5-30)
Result Bangladesh won by 121 runs

Pakistan Squad for Champions Trophy

2013-04-30T02:23:00.001-07:00

The national selection committee on Monday, as expected, axed experienced all-rounder Shahid Afridi and batsman Umar Akmal for the ICC Champions Trophy in England in June.
Chief selector Iqbal Qasim announced the 15-member squad in Lahore after lengthy deliberations although the selectors had finalised the squad last week and submitted it to the PCB chairman for approval.
At the end of the day, it transpired that the selectors made two changes to their submitted squad replacing the injured middle order batsman Haris Sohail with Umar Amin and preferring to pick left arm pacer Wahab Riaz to Aizaz Cheema.
The rest of the squad remained the same and Qasim said that Afridi was dropped because of his recent poor bowling form.
The same set of players with the addition of a few more are expected to get the central contracts for 2013.
The PCB also announced that Australian Trent Woodhill would be the batting coach of the team for the Champions Trophy and would join them in England.
Pakistan first play a one-day series in Scotland and Ireland in May before going to England for the Champions Trophy.

This will be their first visit to England since the 2010 spot fixing scandal.

2014 Asia Cup Shifted to Bangladesh

2013-04-15T01:43:00.001-07:00

The Asia Cup cricket tournament will be held in Bangladesh for the second time in a row after India, who had earlier agreed to host the 2014 edition, backed out citing a packed international schedule.
Bangladesh had hosted the last edition of the tournament in 2012.
The likely dates for the tournament will be February 24 to March 8.
The decision was taken at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) board meeting on April 8 in Kuala Lumpur, according to a report.
It is said that India informed the other ACC members that they were trying to finalise the itinerary for the New Zealand tour, scheduled to be held in February-March next year.
But Bangladesh, in order to host the tournament, is learnt to have agreed to postpone a scheduled tri-series involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan around the same time.
There is a possibility that the dates could be changed again as the BCCI have been trying to convince New Zealand Cricket for two Tests, two ODIs and two T20Is, which will enable India to compete in the Asia Cup .
The ICC's Future Tours Programme (FTP) has India scheduled to play three Tests, five ODIs and a single Twenty20 international.

India to Play 3 Tests 7 One-day and two Twenty20 matches in South Africa

2013-04-15T01:21:00.000-07:00

The Indian cricket team will play three Tests, seven one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches during their tour of South Africa, slated to start at the end of this year.
Cricket South Africa and the Indian Cricket Board were contemplating accommodating one more Test but things could not materialise as both boards decided to stick to ICC's Futures Tour Programme (FTP)
The Indian team will be short on Test cricket when they take on the world number one side, playing the first longer-version game since the 4-0 whitewash of the Australians at home in March.
South Africa last played the format in February and will only meet Pakistan for two matches in the UAE before hosting India.
Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg or Centurion could be the three possible venues for the Test series.
There is a possibility of the Boxing Day Test returning to Durban after it was cancelled previous season because CSA opted to play three festive T20s instead.
India drew their last Test series in South Africa 1-1 in 2010-11.

2013-04-09T01:21:00.003-07:00

The 35-year-old Younis managed just 116 runs in the series against South Africa earlier this month which Pakistan lost 3-2 and has not managed to score a century since November 2008.
Pakistan is in group B of the event to be held in England from June 6-23. The other teams in their group are arch-rivals India, the West Indies and South Africa.
Defending champions Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and England form group A.

ICC World Twenty 20 2014 Logo Unveiled

2013-04-08T03:07:00.003-07:00

Inspired by the unique painted rickshaws which pack the streets of the Bangladeshi cities, the logo for the ICC World Twenty20 2014 was unveiled on a star-studded evening on Saturday night.
At a glittering gala and in the presence of the International Cricket Council (ICC) vice president Mustafa Kamal and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan, the logo for the tournament was launched exactly one year ahead of the tournament finals.
For the first time, 16 men's teams will compete for the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh alongside eight women's teams, which include for the first time, the hosts. The event will run from March 16 to April 6 and is scheduled to be played in four cities - Mirpur, Chittagong, Sylhet and Cox's Bazar.
The spectacular night featured popular Bangladesh artists Lubna Marium and her team Shadhona, singers Habib and Nancy as well as magician Jewel Aich and sand artist Kaushik Bose performing in front of a packed audience of more than 500 specially invited guests.
The logo uses the colours of the Bangladesh flag with splashes of blue which represents Bangladesh's iconic waterways (as well as being the ICC's own colour). The T is made up of cricket stumps and the 0 in the T20 represents the cricket ball complete with Bangladeshi green seam while the white in the design lends an energetic, friendly and youthful feel to the logo.
Designed in Australia by design company WiteKite, who also designed the ICC Cricket World Cup logo in 2011, the ICC World Twenty20 2012 Sri Lanka mark and the distinctive logo for the ICC Women's World Cup 2013 India.
