It's 2:49am (5mins faster, mac time) and I just finish compiling all my artwork altogether. It has been a rocky week, with emotions running high and low.

Singapore Biennale 2011

Well, since it is the holiday, I decided to take a small trip around Singapore town, and check out the Singapore Biennale. Something that i have been wanting to go for the longest time!!! so here it is: =)

When I first think about the theme, Open House, there are a few quirky ideas, or memories that flooded my mind.

One was in sec sch and poly days and uni days, where we were all freshmen and checking out our schools, making new friends, playing ice breaker games, having camps etc..

Two was my aunt was sharing with me about back in the kampung days, with my other aunts, to celebrate their 21st birthday, they will turn their kampung into a party dance square, where friends at the neighborhood will be invited and have a blasting time.

And even today, if you have really good neighbors, who knows, ur house will be open for them, having chit chats, visiting each other during the public holidays and even gossip about the latest news! haha..

And of course, every 2 yrs, the Singapore Biennale will choose an interesting site, to showcase the works.

This time round, it is the Old Kallang Airport! which is the first purpose built airport. Cool right? =D

Some details that you should know, the Singapore Biennale: Open House was opened in 13 March and is running till 15th May 2011. For Family members! There is this event call the Family Outing day.(click on the text, will bring u to the page for more information) Bring your kids along, for some fun and games!

Well, 63 artist from 30 different countries have showcase their works across the National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Art Museum, 8Q, and of course the nostalgic Old Kallang Airport.

I started my day at the National Museum of Singapore, was pretty cloudy, really thank God for the weather.

with everything that i need, i acutally for the audio set for free, btw, if you need the audio set, you can rent it at $3.00. really worth it. because, apart from reading the information, you get a chance to hear what the artist explaining the works, and what inspires them to create their art pieces.

o ya, each museum have a different themes, so, for National Museum of Singapore, it was investigating the aspects of city life.

the toys i used to play with and some, from Macdonalds... lolz

And here are few of my favorites that I choose out frm the National Museum of Singapore.

Flooded macdonalds, which is a video installation, by Superflex, from Demmark. Man.. and the screen is as big as your movie theatre. really really should check this out. =)

for people who love love love adores cooking and love cooking for everyone.. here's how your fridge should look like. haha..

and for people who is always working till the wee hours or have no time to cook or dont like to cooking, the fridge will look like this.

this is, in every ways, very real and i believe it is not just happening in Singapore but also at different parts of the world.

I feel Roslisham Ismail aka Ise, did a very awesome job! ( not just because i love food), but really, FOOD DOES CONNECT to everyone. and it is through living with 6 diverse families that he is able to come out with a beautiful interpretation, on how they think about buying, cooking and eating food.

which reminds me, my fridge is always full. hahahaha, but if i got the time, i will whip up 2 portions of meal. because i will love to share my food with people. hahahaha... =)

Another one is by Mr Koh Nguang How. It is not much of an installation, but rather information. Because he has be collecting newspapers articles and also information that is related to Singapore art scene, even till today.

really does feel like a library of art, just for singapore scene. felt the exclusiveness in the air. haha..

And now this is really close to my heart. From the Old Kallang Airport......

This is hardware shops that u used to find ard ur flats or perhaps underneath a shophouse.

Well, my grand-aunt and uncle, used to own one along kovan, and my family and I used to visit them almost every weekend. (cuz it really look liks this, when i was young)

And you can really get anything and everything you need for a household appliances for your home. From the tiles, to the shelves, everything... was super nostalgic, and my grand-aunt will make red bean soup.. yum yum yum..

Students- $5 (i know we're near to the end of the Biennale, but I strongly recommend that you go! =p esp art students! Don't just stay in the com room or at home, working, studying, u need to let ur mind relax, so that more creativity juice can flow. =))

Ever wonder if a gallery or a private museum will be more interactive?? hmm, that in the future people who have very little knowledge about art will be able to be educated through interactive media? apart from the curators that will host tours and also explaining to people about art.

but wont it be awesome if art can interact with you? Although those media that we see are mostly visual and audible. but what happens when it becomes tangible? that you are able to touch screen it? you know.. like having iPad and getting the people to interact with it.

Penny of thoughts though....

Land space in Singapore is another issue, we're limited by our land, and somehow we can be creative about how to bring art to the masses. Apart from Social Creatives who is doing murals.

Hmmm... shall penned my thoughts till here for now.. tomorrow is gonna be a long day.

Before I end the post. Anyone knows where can i find courses that does cultural studies like part time? or arts management or design part time. or maybe just like learning basic business knowledge.

Hi peeps, Some time ago in 2009, i started this paper jewellry pieces aka origami business. It didnt start off quite well and was left aside on the shelf. Today, i will like to take time to explain more about this...

What is Pap.Flops? How did it come about? I was watching channel newsasia one day, and they were showing a documentary about how in other parts of the world, people are actually using cardboard as a laptop bag, or a art card paper to do up a wedding gown or a costume, as we are living in an era where global warming is has been a long term issue and how we can reuse, reduce and recycle, and being eco friendly. Hence, the idea was born and I started creating some paper jewelry pieces. It was indeed a fun idea, hmmmm... that has it's ups and downs.

thinking of how to expand the idea. any suggestions?

Went to an exhibition on Thursday at the the red dot design museum. It's my first time there ya! was having fun!

Happening until this monday, so you really gotta check it out.

Imprints- weave your own story with the artists as they spin their yarn of childhood memories, forgotten places, human relationships and salvaged fragments of their past. With a range of artworks comprising performance art, site specific installations, oil paintings, ceramic works and more, Imprints creates an intimate dialogue as the artists' work interact with this iconic yet historically profound building.

Imprints is brought to you by the National Heritage Board's social media portal, Yesterday.sg, and the Singapore Contemporary Young Artists society.

Remember how when we were young, say about primary school days, we'll be playing this paste that smells abit like glue, and colored and the packaging states it's balloon. Yeps, it's that balloon. Not your usual balloon, but yep! that balloon, when you feel that the bubble is deflating, you are able to sort of revive it.

Singapore's visual arts scene is booming - but are local galleries ignoring our homegrown artists?

In Singapore's visual arts scene, there is no bigger name right now than video artist Ming Wong.

After his acclaimed exhibition at last year's Venice Biennale, Wong has exhibitions running in Singapore - an ongoing one at the Hermes Gallery and, next week, a solo show at the Singapore Art Museum - as well as in the Sydney Biennale.

He's also graced the front cover of this month's issue of the international art magazine Art Review.

You would think that being Singapore's "It" artist of the moment would mean that local galleries are clambering to represent him. Well, they're not.

While he is talking to several art galleries for representation right now, none of them are from Singapore.

If local galleries can't be bothered with a Venice Biennale local hotshot like Wong, what does that bode for the young Singaporean contemporary artist?

Importance of galleries

While much of the public's perception of the contemporary art scene has focused on big events - such as Biennales, museum shows, and art auctions - art galleries continue to play a vital role in the arts ecosystem.

We may think of art galleries as simply places where artists can put up their works for sale. But they are way more than that.

Singapore Tyler Print Institute's Emi Eu colourfully describes a gallery's job description, aside from selling art, as: "Power broker, tastemaker and cheerleader for young artists."

From pushing for their presence in big international events to little administrative and logistic issues to publishing a catalogue to securing publicity - a gallery takes on these roles to keep the artist free to do their work, said Eugene Tan of Osage Gallery Singapore.

Of the 15 artists they represent, three of them are Singaporeans: Ho Tzu Nyen, Jane Lee and Donna Ong. They're currently in talks with a fourth artist.

In the case of Ho, for example, Osage Gallery provided resources to partly fund his video works for last year's Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia.

Artist David Chan, meanwhile, is one of two Singaporean names represented by Art Seasons Singapore, the other being design collective :phunk.

In the past five years that he's been with them, the gallery has organised three solo exhibitions in Singapore and one in China, as well as a handful of group shows, including the recent Animamix Biennale show in MOCA Taipei and Shanghai. For the latter shows on pop art, Chan said Art Seasons had pushed for his (and :phunk's) inclusion as Singapore's representatives.

"They graciously covered all the transportation costs, which is a very heavy thing," he said with a laugh.

Right now they're also negotiating for a solo show in Taipei and for inclusion in a group show in South Korea.

But a quick look down the art gallery list and you'll see that Osage and Art Seasons are among the few that have young contemporary artists on their list.

Why? Because apparently, there's no demand for it. And that isn't good for a gallery, which is after all, still a business.

"Considering the reality of running a business, (galleries) are, to some extent, looking at profitable names rather than taking risk promoting and pushing relatively unknown artists. The galleries here seem to focus on what the clients want and what is in demand," said Eu.

"There are two ways a gallery can sell art," said Tan. "One is to choose artworks that collectors want and the other is to try to convince collectors that they should be supporting the right kind of artist. And many galleries take the easy way out."

Ode To Art represents Hong Sek Chern - just one among a sea of Chinese artists. But even as director Jazz Chong is an avid fan of Hong's contemporary ink paintings and has pushed for her work, she conceded: "It's all about demand. And if collectors are looking for Chinese artists, well ..."

And it's not only Chinese artists. Judging from the kind of works being exhibited, this scenario includes artists from Indonesia, India, the Philippines or Europe. In other words, artists other than Singaporean ones.

The quality's not there

But Ken Chang, owner of Y2Arts - which does not represent any Singaporean artists but rather emerging Chinese artists - is quick to defend their choice.

Their reasons for not jumping in and taking a young Singapore artist into their fold? They're simply not good enough and can't be trusted to stay artists forever - which is what every collector wants.

"We go to graduation shows in LASALLE and NAFA and take a look, but we do find that some of them need a bit more practice," said Chang. He added that some of these artists would be active for one to two years, before - in a classic chicken or egg story - the realities of surviving as an artist would prompt them to take on a second job, or, worse, just stop working altogether as a visual artist.

Compared to China, with its wealth of material, opportunities and physical space, Singapore's resources for now aren't enough to sustain an army of full-time artists, prompting Chang to comment that Singapore is more of an "art management country" than an "art manufacturing country".

But instead of continuously bemoaning how a small island isn't enough to sustain a market and careers for local artists, why not work around it?

Wong pointed out that given Singapore's small market, one alternative is to push for them regionally and internationally.

Some local galleries are, indeed, doing just that - for some young artists.

Contemporary photography space 2902 Gallery represents young guns Min Tio, Joel Yuen and Zhao Renhui. Owner Gwen Lee said they've been sending out works for consideration to international photography festivals (while footing the submission fee bills and doing things that artists may find "leceh"). They've also been coordinating exchange exhibitions with like-minded galleries in other countries to give local photographers more exposure.

This month, they have a joint exhibition with a Malaysian partner. Plus, they have planned exhibitions with Turkey and Korea. The artists will be exhibited in both countries.

It's hard enough convincing collectors in Singapore to invest in contemporary photography - it's doubly hard to convince them to buy ones by young Singaporean contemporary photographers. But the effort, said Gwen, has slowly been paying off.

Joel Yuen, who won the UOB Painting Of The Year in 2008, now has a patron who supports and buys his work regularly. And, considering 2902 Gallery is barely three years old, it has had private collectors and even institutions like the Singapore Art Museum purchasing works of these young photographers.

Bridging the contemporary art gap

Of course, even with such efforts, there's still a gap between what Singapore's extensive gallery system and Singapore's young contemporary artists can offer, respectively. And it really needs to be filled, said Wong.

"I've spoken to friends who are interested and could become collectors, but don't have access to information and artists," he added.

But likewise, it's not as simple as having galleries representing more contemporary artists from Singapore.

"It's a cog in a bigger wheel and this wheel is not set up," said Wong, describing how museums and the government should come into this dialogue on the art market with galleries and artists. As well as a system of art criticism, which is non-existent, and a more serious art-appreciating public - all to create this support network system.

"It's going to be very hard, but I don't think there's a lack of audience. People are curious," he said.

Let's hope more galleries will become just as curious.
