Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, is recruiting for the position of

Deputy Section Head of Primates.

Howletts is a world class wildlife park run by the international conservation charity The Aspinall Foundation, and works to support a number of overseas conservation projects including the Java Primate Project in Indonesia.We are home to a collection of around 160 rare and endangered primates, including Javan gibbons, Dusky langurs, Sulawesi macaques, Pied tamarins and Gelada baboons to name a few.

We have recently built a rescue and rehabilitation centre in Java where rare Indonesian primates can be confiscated and taken care of; with a view to either returning them back to the wild or providing them with a better quality of life. Ultimately, captive bred animals may also relocate to the centre, providing offspring that could boost the wild population when reintroduction conditions are right.

We are looking for someone with previous experience working as a deputy head keeper or senior keeper, preferably with primates; and experience of managing/supervising a small team of staff.

Applicants must have a proven track record in a similar position at a recognised zoological collection. They must posses good all round animal husbandry skills and be capable of deputising for the Section Head in his absence.

A proactive approach coupled with good organisation and communication skills and an overall understanding of the role of the modern animal collection is essential, as is a full clean driving licence.

It is undergoing a major phase of redevelopment and expansion which makes this a particularly exciting time to join the team.

We are currently recruiting for a Veterinary Manager to run the zoo’s animal health care service. The post holder will be responsible for delivery of the clinical service together with two other veterinary surgeons, two veterinary nurses and a quarantine & records officer. In addition the Vet Manager will coordinate and develop clinical aspects of the zoo's research output (working alongside other zoo scientists including a nutritionist, endocrinologist and applied ethologist) and run our clinical residency programme.

We are seeking a strong team player and experienced zoo/wild animal clinician for this exciting role. The applicant will be expected to hold a relevant post graduate qualification to Masters level or above and have a proven track record in research. They must also hold or be eligible to hold membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (licence to practice in the UK).

The role is full time, 40 hours per week; with weekend duties shared amongst the vets.

A seasonal education officer is required on a seven and a half month fixed-term contract working 4 days (30 hours) per week.

You will be required to teach stimulating, enjoyable and informative sessions to school groups and play schemes on the Downs. You will also help widen the range of groups that visit the Downs by promoting these sessions to new audiences. You will also plan and run children’s holiday events and provide craft activities at public events.
The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, British wildlife/conservation knowledge and the enthusiasm to share this with others, the ability to work independently and in a team, ICT skills, the ability to work under pressure and be flexible.

Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks in Kent are two of Europe’s leading animal collections. We are committed to conservation, education and in situ reintroduction and support projects.

Currently we are seeking a self-motivated, enthusiastic and confident person to help undertake our expanding educational commitments. This is a part time permanent position, working an average of 20hrs a week. Duties of the role include presenting scheduled educational talks to our visitors; presenting educational talks to school groups and bespoke groups; to man the education centre; to provide guided walks with small groups; to run our Junior Ranger and Keeper Academy sessions and assist in creating trails and education activities linked to our monthly themed events.

Ideally, the candidate will have previous experience working in an educational role gained in an established learning/educational faculty as experience in presenting talks to the public is essential. You will also need a good knowledge of exotic wild life and global animal conservation issues. We are looking for a proactive individual with good proven people skills who is a confident and accomplished public speaker.

The role is based at Howletts Park but the successful candidate will be required to work at our sister park, Port Lympne Wild Animal Park as required so candidates must have a full valid driving license and their own transport.

Working 20 hours per week on an alternate Saturday/Sunday/Monday and Sunday/Monday rota basis. Candidates must therefore be prepared to work weekends and public holidays.

This amazing Keeper for a Day experience gives participants a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with some of ZSL’s most popular animals, and also offers a unique insight into the day-to-day life of our keepers and their charges. Keeper hosts will be responsible for up to 5 participants. Lookout Lodge
ZSL are launching a new overnight experience called Lookout Lodge. Guests can stay overnight in their own private lodge, and we will be running family-friendly and adult only nights. The night will be a fully hosted experience and includes tours, BBQ dinner, breakfast and much more. There will be a maximum of 32 guests per evening, and the host keeper will be supported by members of the Explainer team who will lead the talks. Keeper Hosts needed
We are looking to recruit experienced keepers to host these popular experiences. The rota could also include work on an animal section, and will include a combination of daytime, evening, overnight (accommodation provided) and weekend work to cover the experiences above. We are interested in hearing from experienced keepers looking for full or part time hours. Positions will be on a fixed term basis between March – October 2012.

As a host you will need to welcome and engage with guests, and create a safe, relaxed and enjoyable environment. As the Keeper host you will be responsible for co-ordinating and overseeing any activities involving behind the scenes / animals. The Keeper host is supported by the Explainer team on the Lookout Lodge experience, who will lead on the majority of talks.

You will have:

 Proven relevant experience as a Qualified/Senior Keeper or equivalent, a degree in a relevant biological subject, the City of Guilds Diploma in Zoo Animal Management or equivalent

 ability to work as a member of a team and go that extra mile

 Guest empathy

 proven supervisory and interpersonal skills

 clear and effective oral and written communication skills

 good computer skills

It is essential that the Keeper is willing to become a trained first aider, and it may also be necessary for them to become a member of the gun team.

We require two Seasonal Rangers to join Bristol Zoo’s Presentations Team within the Learning Department. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, founded in 1909, owns and operates Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park and manages a variety of programmes dedicated to conservation, education and research domestically and internationally. With a mission to “inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals, and so to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats”, it is one of Europe’s leading centres of conservation, and Edinburgh Zoo is one of the UK’s leading visitor attractions, enhanced by the recent arrival of two giant pandas from China. The position of Chief Executive of the Society is therefore one of significant visibility and influence with considerable responsibilities and opportunities.
Reporting to the Board of the Society through the Chair of the Board, the Chief Executive will be responsible for leading the senior management team in the development and management of the Society as a commercially sustainable organisation in pursuit of its charitable aims and objectives.

Person specification

The Chief Executive must be an experienced and successful business manager, an excellent communicator, a strong leader with sound financial skills and the ability to inspire and motivate staff and manage stakeholders. They will require strong commercial skills and be required to have displayed commercial judgement in previous roles. A background of working in a zoological, wildlife or relevant animal environment would be an advantage as would experience in a customer focused organisation. The Chief Executive must be capable of championing the Society’s excellent commercial and charitable aims both within the organisation and in the wider business, conservation and political communities. They should have significant experience at senior management level where they have a proven track record of leading an organisation.

Key Criteria for this role are as follows:

Leadership - the ability to provide strong and authentic leadership in a setting where they have had responsibility for significant budgets and staff numbers and have contributed at the most senior level to the management of a business.

Strategy/Performance - the ability to define the strategy and monitor/evaluate the performance of an organisation, enabling successful delivery of its products and/or services.

Business and Financial acumen – the ability to manage a successful business, identify and exploit appropriate markets, build and maintain market share and manage budgets in excess of £10 million.

Blackpool Zoo is looking for an experienced primate keeper to assist in the daily care and husbandry needs of their Primate Section. They will also help in developing and moving forward the section within the framework of the animal department's aims and objectives in a new and exciting period within Blackpool Zoo’s history. The section currently maintains over 20 species of primates including Red-fronted Lemur, King Colobus, Red Titi, Goeldi’s Monkey, Emperor Tamarin, Black Howler Monkey, L’Hoest’s Monkey, De Brazza Monkey, Pileated Gibbon, Bornean Orang-utan and Western Lowland Gorilla. You will need to be hard working, physically fit, enthusiastic and reliable. You should possess the Advanced National Certificate in the Management of zoo Animals or an equivalent and have a minimum of three years primate keeping experience. Some experience with great apes is essential.

We offer a competitive salary of £17,968.00 per anum, inclusion in the company’s pension scheme and the opportunity to further your career within the zoological world.

Description of Practice

We require a qualified listed veterinary nurse to work weekends within the exotic department (Great Western Exotics), located within the multidisciplinary Vets Now referral hospital in Swindon, Wiltshire. The part time position (hours negotiable) would suit an experienced RVN with prior exotics experience, to nurse our referral and first opinion exotic case load. The hospital has an enviable clinical kit which includes; MRI and CT scanner, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, endoscopy, surgical suite, ultrasound suite, bespoke exotic wards and dedicated OOH team (we offer 24hr exotic cover).

Duties

Your duties will involve clinical nursing of our exotic patients including; monitoring of anaesthesia, radiography, medication, handling and husbandry of a wide variety of exotic in-patients (birds, reptiles and mammals) . There are day to day responsibilities for running and maintaining the exotic wards and equipment, and opportunities to cover weekday holidays and sick leave for other team members if you so wish. We offer a dynamic, supportive working environment with abundant learning opportunities and scope for further qualifications in exotics if desired.

This role requires a level of autonomy being that you may be the only VN working alongside our clinicians on any given day - thus we require a qualified, listed and experienced veterinary nurse with exotic knowledge and practical capabilities

SUMMARY
The emphasis of this position will primarily focus on laboratory analytical procedures in an exotic animal nutrition laboratory, including sample and data collection and laboratory analyses. In addition, the candidate will be participating in an investigation regarding the impact of diet and (or) dietary ingredients on carnivore health and well-being.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
The candidate will work directly under the supervision of the Director of Comparative Nutrition and the Nutrition Manager at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo. The candidate will be responsible for learning and conducting all laboratory analyses associated with exotic carnivore nutrition research and diet management. The candidate will be responsible for assisting with sample collection during nutrition research projects.

EXPERIENCE
Nutrition laboratory or chemistry experience preferred.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate work toward a B.S in nutrition, biochemistry, animal science, or related biological field.

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Candidate must be independently motivated and possess a familiarity with nutrition research techniques. The candidate must have a flexible schedule and willing to work weekends or holidays if necessary, although a standard Monday through Friday schedule will be typical. Candidate should have an understanding of basic chemistry and scientific method, and exceptional attention to detail. Good communication skills are required, both oral and written. Candidate must be able to work in a team environment, and willing to work alone in a laboratory setting. Basic computer skills are required including applications in EXCEL, WORD, and POWERPOINT.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Some undergraduate coursework.
Valid and current driver’s license.

HOURS
This is a full-time position (30 – 40 hours per week) for 6 months, with potential for a 6 month extension.

To shape a herpetological collection that fulfils the Trust’s conservation aims through managing captive populations, staff training and research and that also provides a valuable, entertaining visitor experience.
To support the delivery of Durrell’s Conservation Strategy, by liaising with Durrell’s Global Amphibian Programme Manager to lead amphibian conservation, both with the animal collection in Jersey and overseas.
To manage and motivate departmental staff and aid them in their professional development.
To teach visiting students practical aspects of animal management, instigate research projects and support others conducting research.
To ensure that the husbandry of the collection conforms to our high standards of animal welfare and ethical guidelines.
To manage the collection and departmental resources within a specified budget.

Specification

Extensive experience (minimum 10 years) of working in reptile and/or amphibian conservation – experience of captive husbandry and working within zoological collections a distinct advantage.
Excellent interpersonal skills with proven experience of leading a team.
Degree in life sciences, biology, zoology or related field required.
Wide knowledge of biology, taxonomy, ecology and the captive requirements of the reptile and amphibian species for which the post is responsible.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English) and experience of delivering presentations.
Proven experience with field conservation projects, preferably amphibian, and knowledge of global amphibian conservation issues.
Good organisational ability and project management skills desirable.
Experience in developing and managing budgets.
A high level of health and fitness as aspects of the job are physically demanding, and a willingness to travel as required.

Deep Sea World is a market leader visitor attraction and Scotland’s gem based in North Queensferry. Our Aquarium hosts the largest temperate marine display in the UK through its underwater walkthrough tunnel. The responsibility of the Aquarist/Diver will be varied, challenging, but extremely rewarding. A hands on approach is required to ensure you achieve the highest standard of animal care and husbandry.

You will be responsible for maintaining and developing all Deep Sea World’s displays and exhibits, along with promoting public education and awareness in relation to conservation of biodiversity.

The successful candidate will be expected to be very personable and able to communicate well with the visitors as you will be responsible for promoting and participating in public presentations and education sessions, as well as conversing with our visitors whilst carrying out your daily duties around the aquarium.

The role requires you to take members of the public into our main tank (as part of our dive experience package), and to carry out shows and maintenance dives, it is essential that you are qualified to PADI Divemaster or equivalent and hold an in date dive medical.

This is a full time post working on a rota’d basis which includes regular weekends and bank holidays as well as being on call for out of hour’s emergencies.

Howletts and Port Lympne are sister parks in Kent housing over 1000 animals from a range of species (primarily mammals). We have multiple-groups of many of these species, providing fantastic research opportunities. We are therefore looking for enthusiastic graduate students wanting to gain practical experience in zoo welfare and research for a 6month to 1year placement working between both parks commencing 13th February 2012.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to run an extended research project, the results of which could be submitted to a research/enrichment conference, gain experience in zoo based research with a wide variety of species. They will also gain experience in the organisation of professional workshops and conferences for keepers and students in collaboration with zoo professionals in the fields of enrichment and research through two conferences: the ‘Primate Society of GB Spring Meeting’ and the ‘UK and Ireland Regional Environmental Enrichment Conference’ which will be hosted by the parks in 2012.

We are looking for someone with a BSc in zoology, animal behaviour, psychology or similar qualification who has a passion for conservation and captive research. You will need a good knowledge of statistics programmes such as SPSS, have experience of data collection with various animal species, Good communication skills, a full clean driving license and your own transport and a flexible approach to working hours is essential.

Working three to four days a week which will include some weekends ideally we are looking for someone to start as soon as possible.

We are currently seeking an Operations/Commercial Manager, dedicated to giving our visitor’s a great day out. PhilinCon´s rainforest conservation project PanayCon has lost its local project manager and is in urgent need of a new one. The project is operating
successfully since 1995, see web pages below. As the recent flood disaster on Mindanao with many dead and homeless people has shown, deforestation in the Philippines threatens both humans and ecosystems, with an increasingly pressing need to save the last intact forest remnants like the Panay lowland rainforest as a genetic resource for reforestation.

Amazonia is an indoor tropical rainforest themed exhibit situated within M andD’s theme park, Strathclyde Country Park, Motherwell.

We are looking to recruit a manager to oversee all aspects of the successful running of the facility including animal management, staff management, education, reception and retail, and liaison with other departments of M and D leisure ltd. It is a varied and challenging role that will prove hugely rewarding for the right person.

Duties and Responsibilities

-Attending to the husbandry requirements of a varied small animal collection which will involve writing and updating protocols and training staff in their implementation
-Co-ordinating education visits to ensure they run smoothly and that group organisers are happy with their visit
-Liaising with directors and senior management to ensure that expectations are met
-Liaising with sales and marketing to ensure optimum commercial operation of the facility
-Ensuring that the standards of the SSSMZP are met and exceeded
-Keeping accurate records
-Overseeing all staff and volunteers to ensure efficient operation of the facility and filling in for any role when necessary to allow for busy periods, staff sickness and holidays
-Monitoring stock of food and supplies and re-ordering as necessary
-Cashing up reception tills at end of day
-Developing and implementing a collection plan
-Overseeing the process of obtaining full BIAZA membership

Person required
-As this is an extremely varied role we require an organised individual with the ability to multi-task and delegate as appropriate
-Confident and outgoing who enjoys communicating with a wide range of people.
-Has at least 3 years experience working with exotic animals, in a managerial or supervisory capacity and experience delivering education
-Must be familiar with all aspects of zoo licensing legislation
-Holds the ANCMZA/DMZAA or equivalent and ideally a 1st degree in an animal related subject. Extensive experience may be considered in lieu of qualifications
-Full driving license and own transport essential Hours and pattern of work
-Approximately 40 hours per week with the ability to be flexible when the workload requires it
-Expected to work weekends, bank holidays and school holidays as part of a rota

ZSL is now looking to recruit a Deputy Team Leader for the Bird Section at ZSL London Zoo. In keeping with the responsibilities and require skills of the post it is essential that applicants have a significant and diverse experience of aviculture within a Zoo environment and sound experience in a supervisory position.

You will be fully familiar with accepted husbandry practises and standards and have a deep interest in breeding programmes and conservation. The successful applicant will be responsible for working closely with the Team Leader and deputizing where required. You will be actively involved with the day-to-day running and management of section. Along with good administrative skills and the ability to organise and motivate staff, you will be expected to give a strong commitment to raising the profile of ZSL through your work especially via linkage with relevant organizations such as BIAZA and EAZA. The ability to work as part of a team is essential as are excellent communication skills.

Twycross Zoo – East Midland Zoological Society (TZEMS), the World Primate Centre, has over 1,000 animals and is the most comprehensive collection of primate species and subspecies in the western world. We have exciting plans for developing the Zoo further, continuing our work in conservation of endangered species and providing the very best environment that we can.

A position has become available for a deputy section head keeper to work on our Primates Section, which includes Old and New World monkeys and lemurs, although there may be opportunities to cross train between other sections. Zoo-based experience is essential, including a minimum of 5 years practical management of primates. Experience of supervising staff and the BIAZA approved Sparsholt College ANCMZA/DMZAA would be desirable but an equivalent zoo animal-related qualification could be considered.

The role is full time, including weekend duties on a rota system. Salary is paid monthly and we provide uniform, 31 days holiday, 5% employer’s pension contribution.
