Vedic India And Later

India encompasses history of a civilization that goes back five thousand years. The best thing that happened to India of old..is subsistence in extremely rich natural surrounds. Dependence and hence productive relationship with nature was instrumental behind creation of the existential framework that we call the Indus Valley Civilization. And in spite of exotic ideologies and modernity that prevails besides...the ethos still persists amongst us.

Vedic culture albeit has a murky existence in the convoluted labyrinth of our minds in the contemporary era, nevertheless it is very much apparent in our belief systems across the subcontinent. The widespread practice of rites and rituals which express affinity with agrarian practices and sugar coated principles that some historians and those opposing refer to as myths is suggestive of an old system that has aged through years attributing extensive tolerance and faith in non violence besides acceptance of ethnic and ideological diversity.

All these attributes are colors of the living in a harmonious environment that has accorded impressive growth and development post independence. Not that the subcontinent was underdeveloped in the historic era before the foreign invaders charged upon us and the squabbles of indigenous rulers began. The latter did not erode our systems albeit they lead us to penury and made us susceptible to overseas invaders.

The servile existence through the period of internecine wars and intermittent rules and subsequent emergence is a sign of resilience that we have inculcated during the earlier ancient Vedic period... the traits are very much among us till date. Take for example aggressive postures in our neighbourhood and our positive approach.

Although the country went through wars and ravage which occurred frequently... peace prevailed subsequently with emergence of intrinsic ethos that were formed during the Vedic period. Even till this date they prevail and shape our reasoning and logic.

The exact civilisation status (Indus Valley) is made out of clay tablets and some archaeological sites. Nevertheless the Vedic scriptures are a robust pointers to the belief systems and practices that developed and subsequently prevailed in India and is prominent even in the contemporary.

Emergence of Thought

A thought so powerful that it reigned over many neighboring and Far East civilizations for a considerable period till the start of Islamic invasions. Nevertheless the ethos never died and still persists in one form or other among us.

From nature we have learned to respect and accept diversity in all forms including in the society. The proclivity towards nature, and a value system that accords respect to its various elements labeling them sacred and worthy of belief is an inclusive trait which teaches us to accept our environment holistically.

Hinduism

It is these comprehensive set of beliefs that have led to evolution of Hinduism. It is an ecosystems in which many related beliefs have successfully flourished and still do. Hinduism is an inclusive ideology that accepts the exotic with ease or with minor turbulence in case of assertive dominance or proselytization.

Nevertheless a value system with proclivity towards nature besides the prevailing modern religious ecosystem could have emerged only in non volatile circumstances. The existence of diverse spectrum of practices and micro-beliefs within one ecosystem stands testimony. India can never accept one overriding belief that is a characteristic of theocracy.

Pluralistic Ethos

Pluralism will prevail like it does today and it is strongly solidified with the system that is seeing light in many developed countries as the need of the hour. The World will eventually be a pluralistic society even Nations that are solidly entrenched in theocracy or totalitarian ideologies accept in some manner or another the secular principle of India's democracy.

Modern Religion

What emerged was not animistic or a primitive source of beliefs but a modern religion that accorded right values to immediate surroundings that carried over a profound impact on the lives of the people. Diversity and Pluralism should prevail and be accepted as an existential phenomenon that is proactive and harmonious until unless extremism steps in.

India has benefited from its diverse profile and inclusiveness. Indian democracy today encompasses the secular and inclusive principle of Nationhood. Jai Hind!

Chinese Hegemony at our Doorstep

War & Peace

Is the war on? War is already on!

I was reading a comment question on one of the articles in an online newspaper covering the Galvan Valley Faceoff. Those who are not able to make out the dubious design of our adversary could be shocked in time to come if the contemporary events have not made them yet. Hence complacency on our side would be disastrous, but I have faith in the ruling dispensation and our defense forces that such lacunae is not there.

It's all in the open especially after China blatantly favoring countries with political or military agenda that is inimical to our interest. It has been aggressively opposing us on all International forums. Its hegemonic expansionist design is no secret with constant aggression in South Asian Sea (SCS) and acrimony with nearly all its Asian neighbours. It's collusion with our staunch enemy, and some gullible neighbours is no secret. Oops! I nearly forgot the annexation of Tibet which is history.

But however aggressive and malicious the design behind the skirmishes are war is not easy to start and endure considering the International displeasure and discouragement that the aggressor may face and added to possible International isolation could be the price that its economy would have to pay. The later could result in dip in demand severely if not a total boycott.

Unfortunately the peace initiative is not in our hand it seems. For we are a peace loving country that believes in dialogue and not war. If you look back at history we have always faced the offensive right from the days of Arab invasion to arrival of Moguls and then the British.

Whether this defensive peace loving National Character has been costly is not the matter of discussion here? But it is not difficult to conjecture that we need to be militarily strong, proactive and offensive whenever the situation arises. Any hesitation on our part could be costly, not only on terms of lives lost but losing land can be of consequence as well.

LAC

It is not only the long boundary that we share with China called LAC the line of actual control which stretches a good three thousand five hundred kilometres it is the disputed nature of the boundary that is behind the frequent scuffles that have taken place since year. But the recent faceoff has aggravated the situation alarmingly. Behind this heat up is definitely the expansionist policy of Northern neighbor whose claim on our land should never be accepted. Most of claim on our land is chimerical based on conjectures without any fact to support. It will not be possible to settle this issue until unless status quo is accepted.

Claims and counterclaims, blaming each other repeatedly on every event is a tactical percusor to false propaganda in order to justify the heinous acts of war. This is how wars start as the real motive behind the aggressor (China) are not known or at the best construed. One things is not difficult to conjecture and that the aggressor has not tasted real blood so far, and for that 1962 war and our failure at that event has bolstered its belief in might is right. The economic disparity favoring it and the military might that seems to be in its favour as well creates a perception that it can any time make India bite the dust.

Way Ahead!

India is no more a disorganised weakling as it was in 1962 with practically no military capabilities. This is not the case anymore we stand neck to neck in case of confrontation now and can deliver a shocking punch. They have lost more soldiers than we have and this will be the case in future faceoffs or full fledged war.

China should immediately stop claiming our territory and return all that it has forcibly captured during the 1962 war...if it wants good relations and peace with us. If ever they try to intrude into our territory they will be repelled and incur heavy losses.

For us this is not time to entertain political, social and ideological distances and dissension. We should stand united and deliver a solid punch to the enemy.

This minuscule infectious agent survives in the microscopic maze of obscurities and so far has defied all norms and analysis about its spread, growth and prevalence. Covid 19 has proven to be the most mysterious pandemic the World has ever faced. With a contingent or a methodical race for cure in form of a vaccine which seems most likely panacea for our survival, and number of existing solutions hidden in the bottomless labyrinth of pharmacopoeia there augurs no forward movement in the immediate circumstances at least not much.

Dexamethasone has been now illuminated as a wonder drug after rejection of HCQ by many research based institutions. Dexamethasone is a steroid or a corticosteroid produced naturally by our adrenal glands. Though not exactly a cure its role seems to have been enhanced as strong palliative and life saver in the line of treatments in contingency which makes oxygen supplement or ventilation support an imperative.

This conclusion about new addition to line of treatment has arisen due to trials carried out in England. In fact this is the drug is part of biggest trail testing of existing palliatives or possible cures. As reported in the BBC News the drug dexamethasone has emerged as a major breakthrough with possibility of saving lives by one third of those on ventilators and by one fifth of those needing oxygenation. The medicine seems to work at low doses during the advance stage of infection. This is an inexpensive durg available widely.

If the drug proves its mettle in the long run it could be one step forward towards saving large number of lives and bringing the fatality ratio down in favor of beleaguered humanity. But this news should not have people rushing to the pharmacists since all medication should be taken or administered under the aegis of expert medical practitioners and in care of well equipped hospitals. Self medication is disastrous, for any suspected symptoms please contact you doctor or nearest medical institution in charge of infectious disease or a hospital.

If the effectiveness of this palliative or life saver is further proven it will be a miracle, but only experts can deduce the efficacy of the drug under various underlying conditions.

Covid - 19 Defying Norms

Coming back to the point Covid 19 is defying all established norms set by previous pandemics and is supposed to have mutated in a manner that has enhanced its infectious abilities and has become more stable.

The pandemic is defying all norms of containment globally though lockdowns seems to have diluted the spread of Covid 19 by enhancing distances between carriers and susceptible, it has been only limited to controlling the spread. The seasonal impact has not been as expected at all the hot summers seems to have played no role in containment so far. This seasonality will also be under scrutiny during the monsoon in India.

Take Precautions Advised Without Hesitation

Hence social distancing norms, wearing masks and gloves and putting up face shields whenever necessary and washing hands vigorously with soap and safe sanitizer is what every person should follow strictly. Governments all over are advising their citizens best practices to safeguard their health from ill effect of this deadly disease. Please follow!

Lockdowns have a limit because of social and economic compulsions, respect guidelines set by the Government and keep yourself safe while moving or at a place of work. Avoid places that have been designated as risky and stay at home maximum.

Pen Mightier Than The Sword!

With the introduction of Internet and the increase in its popularity the pen has become mightier than the sword. In this net age there cannot be a more adequate saying than this popular one.

Yes there are more readers well in millions now if not billions, and news is within easy reach of them. With this widespread COVID 19 pandemic or coronavirus people have more time to visit these sites which they come across frequently in the cyberspace.

This opportunity is being widely exploited by authors who are political opportunists and those with biased ideological leaning and bigots. False malicious message or propaganda as skillfully crafted half truth is being spread among people using news, articles, videos and blogs. Those with reputation and employed by foreign media, and those with seditious tendencies are most vociferous.

Half baked celebrities, some media persons and some writers all with ill intents, few overzealous intolerant evangelists all are making a dive for this social opportunity to further their malicious cause. Some are seeking cheap popularity while some are trying to rake in the country's detractors maybe for hire and what not.

Even Nation's with anti-India agenda are resorting to false news, negative and preconceived opinion pieces, malicious half truths, news distortions in order to to impress International rights communities and organisations against us and further their ill conceived plans and cause.

These are turbulent times when we have to be cautious in believing the fake media and the propaganda distributed by the likes mentioned above. Hastily accepting this malady propagated through the Internet and social media sites is giving into dangerous emotions and playing around with negative belief against others. These people are not honest towards and do not care for your well being.

All this is leading to disharmony, religious disturbances and overall weakening of the Nation. United We Stand!

Shouldn't we believe in ourselves, and make the Nation strong by fortifying religious harmony through tolerance and understanding, discouraging the detractors and supporting the Governments chosen by the people.

The right to oppose and dissent is guaranteed in our constitution - what we call the freedom of speech - but should it favour or promote sedition or create disturbances in civil society?

Opposition and dissent should not become a tool for prejudice, undue political gains, and self promotion in public life.

Anyway these very false attributes are going to be revealed one day. You cannot fool the public for long and then it will turn against the detractors en masse.

So please stick to the rules and aesthetics.

COVID-19 : After The Lockdown

A commendable action does not mean a commendable gain. But in case of Covid-19 humanity seems to be winning the battle albeit painfully slow. The lockdown has been been borne by the majority with a stoic acceptance and somewhat as fait accompli.

But the act of closing the movement of people albeit imperative has slowed down the economy by bringing to halt the churning wheels of daily chores. In some cases businesses have come to sudden halt impairing income especially that of daily wage earners and the downtrodden.

Death looms large and people stay inside peeping out only for the essentials - medicine, grocery and milk. This has been a terrible inconvenience for active souls. Locked up in the house they have come to know the number of cracks in the wall hitherto neglected. Well not only this a large number of issues must have come to life in this stale air of stillness. Of conjugal relationship less highlighted the better.

But the stress is telling not only among the people bolted within the four corners of the house but on the Governments as well. The economy must spin and wheels of progress must go round and round as they did before this coronavirus was heaped upon the unsuspecting humanity.

After strict lockdown and amelioration the things need to open a step at a time. But in case of economy the haste is obvious in a poverty stricken country like India. In spite of all the precautions - Stay At Home - many places in our country are still in red zone and even during the relief containment zones would be locked proper with no respite to those within.

How long this will go on nobody knows. Well it depends upon the efficiency and speed of testing and the effectiveness of quarantine. People will bear in silence but the religious zealots are the biggest threat. Yes internal order is of utmost importance and the administration would find it difficult to contain in case of such leaks.

The final solution it seems is not the heat nor the CHQ or any other panacea, it is the development of effective vaccine that will win the battle. That is more than a year away hence the Government will loosen the lock down in places with less incursion of the pandemic.

This will be the post lockdown period and a dangerous one in the sense that community movement will start fervently even whence the malady is there albeit in some other quarters. The cautious one's will have to use all the etiquette learned during the active period in their realms. The not so cautious one's will be playing with fire and increasing the chance of spread once again.

As rightly pointed out this malady is not restricted by boundaries whether state or International. It would not infect on basis of caste, creed or colour. It will be for each person to save himself from this deadly virus.

One will have to live in a virtual lockdown, in isolation, distancing during work, avoiding get togethers hence no parties, avoiding places where crowd could be formed. It certainly will be different World the one with which we are terribly unfamiliar. There will be noose hanging over all the time.

The post lockdown period would not a period of absolute emancipation it would a freedom at possible cost. Hence take care!

This is the price we will be paying for desecrating rules of nature and causing an environmental disaster. As the first step, lets stop felling trees and killing and consuming wild life forms. All the wet markets selling exotic meat have to be shut down permanently. We now know how caged animals feel. Lets stop keeping pets in cages and aquariums zoonotic disease may be transmitted not only by meat consumption, the pets may be the transmitter in future.

There is no other option. Keep Safe!

Global Economic Models! Are We Auguring Extinction?

With mass extinction taking place on Earth and having lost innumerable species, it is time for us to rethink. The extinction is continuous as many species all over the Earth are dying on day to day basis. The valuable forests our green lungs are being rapidly devoured for wealth and survival. There are lot of incongruities that is threatening life on Earth a delicate and fragile ecosystem. Life depends upon an equilibrium created by innumerable earthly elements and we are dependent upon that till we can trans-locate to another planet with life supporting systems.

With this COVID - 19 pandemic our time has come as well?

Well it is only a conjecture but you never no. With rapid incidence of disease and disorders, internecine wars, overpopulation, self annihilating weapons and a failed economic model we are dying for sure! Albeit slowly.

Why is extinction happening regularly?

Some species naturally become extincting when their contributory role is over on Earth. But most of the extinction that is taking place is at the behest of humans and their inimical activities. The race to amass wealth is the case of already developed countries and for the less fortunate it is a race for survival. But that is our creation overpopulation, lack of conservation ethos, greed and what not. Nature does not understands human predicament it is a fragile web of life in conjunction with limited earthly elements where a fatal rupture is taking place at the present juncture.

Infinite economic growth and unchecked infrastructure development not forgetting ill planned urbanization all at the cost of our environment is the cause of the deadly menace we are facing. The unmitigated lust for having a go at limited natural resources is a common occurrence at this juncture , it is the work of an economic model that is causing harm to our environment and leading towards species extinction that includes us humans.

Albeit as harmful to Earth, the global warming and the resultant climate change pale out whence compared with deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

While there should Global regulations and restrictions as regards the commercial activities like industrialization and exploitation of natural resources the idea appears to be at best chimerical. With the Earth in absolute chaos we have to look within!

Forget about the World order, we in India are also under the deadly spell of this pandemic. Labelled as a developing country with abject poverty all over we are hard pressed to provide life of sustenance to an overpopulated mass.

The ill planned economic models are cause of death and destruction all over the World India too is contributory. Hence we have to sit back and rationalize. hat is going wrong? Development is an imperative but at what cost?

The impact of unchecked natural resource utilization and denudation of scarce ecosystems has contributed to environmental ills that we are witnessing and more is to come.

When environmentalist protest against National policies it does augur extreme and honest circumspection if not more. How we can move ahead minimizing harmful actions and policies? This pandemic albeit a zoonotic disease is an indication of what happens when we do not stick to responsible behavior and continue to indulge propelled more by instinct than careful planning.

In India our ecosystems (remaining), natural resources, and vast stretches of open land which even though do not constitute as ecosystem are valuable to us for the environment's sake. In short we have to minimize land use and exploitation of natural resources in our country. This will help, even though we will not be left unscathed by the impact of inimical global activities that are raging uncontrolled around us. It will be a good beginning anyway and exemplary.

Why the affect of COVID-19 has been sparing in our country? Although too early to say as it is not understood well yet. But it could be because of something we have been doing right?

Coronavirus: Death And Destruction

Coronavirus Pandemic!

The economic fallout is destructive as destructive as a holocaust. The viral epidemic has created its own saga, a sordid tale of unfolding human tragedy that shows no sign of abating and mitigating our sorrows.

Ironically the major impact has been in countries with top of the rung medical care systems and an enviable economic hierarchy firmly established in the global ladder of development. USA, Italy and Spain to name a few are under the spell of the viral agent and some of the sufferers there are dropping like pins and needles. Poof!

No amount of research and development has created a platform wherein we could deal efficiently with this menace that has sprung a surprise. Lockdown is the only recourse we have that too for breaking the chain of infections not decimating the invisible monster.

A tiny invisible spec of a germ is holding us for a ransom and the ransom is very much explicit. Stop fooling with nature! But paradoxically in spite of such deadly epidemics, World wars, internecine uprisings, global warming and climate change we will not do what the instances warn us about again and again.

The fight against pandemic has has lead us to extol stories of valour, sacrifice and stoic wait in each and every country affected. It is the battle for survival of the meek against the mighty and the latter is COVID-19. The war that began in one small corner of the World has spread like bush fire consuming humans in its wake. The battle rages on in spite of gigantic efforts by countries enmeshed in this ravage.

But when will the rot stem and what cost it will extract...the projections are speculative. Yes how will it all end? People in affected countries are hoping for a vaccine as saviour or anti malarial remedy to come to their rescue, there are myriads of solutions enumerated by the enlightened, the soothsayers, psychics and what not.

Unfortunately we fail to grasp the reason behind this apocalyptical onslaught that is slaughtering us from unknown gaps and crevices we can barely guess. Somehow or the other the impact will decrease And yes a solution would be found. What then?

This is a clear cut case of cause and effect. We are bound by a food chain which has norms and we have to follow a consumption pattern it dictates. We just cannot consume what is not a part of our present food chain perhaps. We are omnivorous but with limitations, we cannot consume exotic animals, birds, reptiles and insects which are not in our regular diet. Irregular exotic food consumption will not enable the development of immunity within us, hence the prevalence of deadly zoonotics will keep on rampaging the human society.

In order to retain life support systems on Earth and keep it in an equilibrium we need to behave responsibly else we will have to keep on tackling the deadly epidemics that surge now and then. But this is not all, we have to change our relationship with Earth and all elements that are part of it.

The unchecked fossil fuel consumption, mining, rabid industrialization and ensuing pollution to name few negatives are responsible for global warming, hence the climate and the depletion of ozone layer. Should we not take remedial actions at fast pace?

In isolation we will certainly perish we have see the Earth in a holistic perspective and define laws and regulations in order to prevent what is inimical to our only home in the Universe. Now is the time whence these laws and regulations have to be implemented on global scale and not individually by countries. There has to be uniform World order.

It is time we unequivocally speak against the consumption of exotic meats. It is time the World bodies stepped in to ban unholy practices quite common in some countries. There should be stringent application of Wildlife Protect Act like in India all over the Globe. If we are lax in these remedial actions and also continue to denude the ecosystems we are doomed. Doomed!

Coronavirus Conundrum - Nature Fights Back

Coronavirus & Our Environment!

While the World seethes under the impact of deadly coronavirus, we have no remedial measure in place. Social isolation and stay at home are not a remedies but mitigating nonetheless that will be practiced in continuance for our well being. But even at this perilous juncture there are gaps and loopholes. Take for example people resisting isolation measures on ideological pretext. This is disastrous and inimical to our National interest and should be put to stop with a firm hand.

With thousands dying every day paradoxically in countries with advanced medical care there seems to be no end to it. In this quagmire of deadly pandemic few facts are emerging which albeit have yet to be quantified. The impact of this menace has been more in cold countries and statistics are testimony to that. In time to come more facts will emerge.

Why heavily populated countries like India are not reeling under an impact as severe as that in Italy, Spain and US is bit hard to conjecture?

Is there a disaster in waiting for dense populations that could be an easy target for this rapidly mutating pathogen?

Perhaps rising temperatures have something to do with this low level impact in some countries. But this has not been hundred percent proven albeit many such countries are waiting for temperature to rise.

Pandemics & Nature!

This tragedy that is holding the World in consternation is being seen as an invasive disaster shaped perhaps by evolution. But this is a myopic approach and we have to pay greater attention to the root cause of emergence of such pandemics on Earth.

World has been subject to pandemics at regular intervals and this is no surprise. With rapidly deteriorating environment these incidences of deadly pandemics are going to hasten. And we continue to go against nature in our greed for amassing wealth by breaking rules and that too with great haste and impunity. Where this mad race for wealth creation will lead us nobody knows? But it has certainly lead to deadly Corona! And more is in offing.

What we do not realize is that we live in a well defined environment created by a large ecosystem. Well many of us do know this but mired as we are in a material World we continue to move into the black hole.

Yes wealth accumulation precedes care for our environment, we have been given a free hand to create wealth with no holds barred, no principles. In spite of such economic disparities we have yet to realize the folly of system we have created. And there is no governing arm as regards to illogical and irrational lifestyles in many countries. How do we put a stop to this?

It is each for self (Nations) with abject disregard for what holes we are leaving in the process. Dependency on fossil fuels, excessive exploitation of natural resources, rabid industrialisation and infrastructure development, overflowing populations, internecine wars, economic and ideological wars, irrational lifestyles and consumptions....these are inimical to well being of our ecosystem...and we will continue to face the wrath of nature. Our survival is in question and if this is not apocalyptical than what is?

Uniform World Order

It is evident now we need a uniform World order, a governance and restriction mechanism which prohibits exploitation of natural wealth, prevents damage to remaining ecosystems and keeps a strict hold on exotic irrational lifestyles.

Conservation Ethos - Vedic Culture

States that lack conservation ethos are certainly addicted to food which many of us will abhor and consider it bizarre and atrocious. In India we have been lucky in that the ancient Vedic Culture that still prevails among us had accorded sanctity to innumerable life forms and natural elements that play a crucial role in preserving the equilibrium of the environment that sustains life on a Earth.

Rivers, trees, animals, birds are accorded sanctity status in Hindu Pantheon as well, hence the preservation of our wilderness is still impressive in spite of the global race for rabid development and rising demand for exotic life form derivatives. This concept of nature worship which many find irrational and illogical would now seem to make sense to them after this disease outbreak.

Nature Worship

Hope nature worship now becomes acceptable globally or at least accorded due consideration...it is just according equity to important life forms and natural elements. Hope it does brings forth a realization for we do not survive in isolation like in case of an ecosystem. It is not necessary to attain nirvana, at least by respecting other life forms we will sustain ourselves for eternity.

The Earth is a supreme ecosystem and a web of life in which all life forms and natural elements are closely interlinked and a break would be disastrous. The global warming is creating havoc among us and still we fail to realize. Sustainable practices are need of the hour.

Pandemics

We have already experienced Ebola Virus, SARs, Avian Influenza and so many others... The Coronavirus is the latest threat, and it will be quite some time before we are able to tackle this pandemic effectively. Many of these disease causing pathogens are here to stay and we have to learn to avoid and tackle them whenever they strike for some a vaccine will be as good a cure.

Consuming wild animals, birds and insects poses a greater threat of infection by pathogens that we have difficulty in overcoming. In short our immunity system is not strong enough to face foreign microorganism that prevail within our systems especially in case of consumption of life forms which we do not consume on regular basis.

But this is less so of vegetable matters however distant from our daily diets, nevertheless they too can prove poisonous and could carry pathogens that can be a threat to life. However little evidence prevails regarding this hence no need to conjecture about exotic floral elements. This is a proven fact and not vegan chauvinism.

TCM

The Chinese System of Medicine (TCM) is based more on animal products unfortunately comprising of our wild brethren. The rampant consumption has posed a severe threat to many species and they are on the verge of extinction, the tiger is one of them and so are the pangolins for example.

It is not just the TCM in which exotic life forms are consumed...they are consumed in many countries but to a lesser extent. These practices are based on chimerical effect of animals parts on health and vigour. But the malady continues in most part of the World. It is not only this, in some countries wild animal parts are considered as delicacies and consuming is a status symbol among the rich.

Ayurveda

Fortunately Ayurveda is based more on herbal products and natural elements in form of minerals. Though wild animals are consumed for food and medicine in our country too the practice is almost negligible. This is thanks to the Vedic Culture and the Wildlife Protection Act so wisely instituted to preserve nature as whole in India.

Our Diet

This calls for a more disciplined consumption of animal protein through livestock and total abstinence from wild animals, birds, reptiles and insects. Though vegetarianism seems to be the answer but it is not practical since animal protein is essential for our well being. And the prices of vegetable skyrocketing in developing countries could be real till sustainable production is achieved.

In India we consume animal protein in rational amounts, and balance our diet with vegetable matter to remain healthy. Now there are more and more advocates of this kind of diet where meat consumption is limited.

If human race has to survive long with health and wellness intact we need to rethink our pattern of consumption and this is imperative. Wild matter should be completely prohibited as our Wildlife Protection Act advocates. This will not only help in preserving our environment and also save us from apocalypse.

CAA! Confusing Socio-Political Conundrum

Leaving the violence and sedition aside, the recent and continuous upheaval amongst all sectors about CAA or Citizenship Bill is a sign of a robust democracy. CAA a Citizenship Amendment Act which is enacted to provide citizenship to beleaguered citizens of theocratic neighbouring countries is perceived in different light by oppositions, social activists, thinkers, students of universities and colleges and we the general public.

The apposition on many instances is rank political gamesmanship while on other hand it is a genuine concern as to what it will lead to in a country where salient secular principles in the Constitution have already been embedded, defended and held fast during passage of time since Independence. For some it stands as a veiled threat of rising "right" amongst the political class and the bureaucracy in India. But the worst instance is that of those who habitually oppose (sometimes vehemently) every step the ruling dispensation takes...for their political or ideological gains. This in mind of public is creating a "Cry Wolf" situation in India and undermining the possibility of a strong rational opposition in the country.

The Bill which aims to provide refuge for minorities in neighbouring countries under constant threat from overzealous and forced proselytizing at the behest of rabid organizations and Governments is seen as rightly conceived and just. The exclusion of people of faith that upholds these theocracies is based upon the fact that they already have a home with majority of their own kind. What makes this bill somewhat non inclusive is that it does not provide succor to troubled minorities within the the majority in the neighbourhood. This should be a matter of concern if we are true to secularism and a liberal democracy.

Another misconception fiercely denied by the ruling dispensation is that it is against the interests of Muslims in India. Though many have not read the Bill including the author there is lot of confusion and fear perception prevailing in the ecosystem which is based on secular principals and freedom for all concept. However this article only enumerates the reaction to the legislation vis a vis extant of democratic freedom of speech we have in our country.

Another manifestation of this legislation which is already enacted by the majority in both the houses is a deep state tussle between advocates of theocratic Nationalism and those for a greater liberal secular entity. Fortunately the latter dominates in our country, former is perceived as impracticable romanticizing of a Golden past even by those not against theocratization of the State.

Looking into the federal structure and social construct, we will always be a poly cultural and multi religious democracy. In fact all encompassing community cohesion is in our National interest. But we should understand and accept that being a Hindu majority country, its ideological influence and shadow will always be there...what is unacceptable is intrusion into or discrimination of several ideologies prevailing in this ecosystem whether indigenous or foreign.

As the World's largest democracy we should have immense faith in hustings and time and again we have voted to subdue rising authoritarianism and misrule.

Hyderabad Gang Rape & Murder

The recent rape and murder of lady in Hyderabad evoked extreme passions all over the country and rightly so. This horrendous incidence should never have taken place if the security paradigm was efficient and on toes. Anyway this was preceded by many such ghastly incidences where the women were the sufferers, and some even lost their lives.

Crime & Our Attitude

In case of all such happenings there is lot of hue and cry in the aftermath. But like a receding tempest a bout of amnesia occurs and everything is soon forgotten...and then another jolt reawakens but then too nothing happens. We continue to trudge on the same path without any lessons learn't and requisite changes made. We are sleep walking?

Keeping in mind the complexity of law nevertheless there should be a high conviction rate of people involved in criminal acts.

The Accused

Those involved seemed to be illiterate, impoverished and under the influence of alcohol. But this impression does not justify crime anyway. To rape and kill a hapless lady in such brutal manner is a dreadful act no human should commit...and unpardonable.

Our Society

We can blame the society and social mores as well. But societal paradigm takes ages to change and is an evolutionary process shaped by contemporary lifestyles of the masses and the education systems prevailing at all rungs. At the best our dispensations use a ban rather then seeking alternative remedies and tools. So what is the remedy?

Should we place additional security where women could be vulnerable?

Should we increase the range of Mahila Police? And induct more?

That we should fetch paramount changes in the justice system is evident. We should strenghen our internal security is also evident. But there many other innervating factors within.

But the major impact that will reduce crime in the country would be delivered by the judiciary and law and order mechanism. Both at the present circumstances do not discourage or impede crimes in India at all.

I am not a legal expert but is judiciary and law and order mechanism still steeped in the archaic? Shaped perhaps during the Raj, the system calls for rapid transformation into the contemporary and the prevailing conditions in the country.

The consequent encounter that followed (in self defense) by police killed the criminals was lauded by one and all. Convinced that the the accused had committed this gory crime and had no right to life thereafter.

But have we given a thought further regarding misuse of policing power?

The unfortunate victim has been delivered justice and may her soul rest in peace. No one should undergo such suffering.

But this event speaks loads about how justice is imparted in India, and raises questions in the mind of the commons regarding the systems that prevail.

The easy availability of bail and indefinitely procrastinated legal process is an encouragement to those with propensity to commit crimes. The legal proceedings are further complicated by the connivance of the investigation agencies at least those who are corrupt. We should also take into account the bending of law or complete denial and twisting of evidence due to the influence of the powerful and wealthy. We are completely aware regarding these maladies.

Reducing corruption in our police force and investigation bodies will fetch in a dramatic change in crime landscape.

But speaking about institutional corruption a lot many of us the people are also steeped deep into it. It has sort of become an inherent characteristic of many. A lot of us look for easy way out, and whence seeking short cuts do not hesitate to grease palms. Not all corrupt instances are forced upon public.

We need to say No! First!

The possibility of early bail is a common knowledge, and hence does not deter a criminal act. In our country bail spells literally freedom forever albeit this is not always the case.

Who will step forward in this country to ameliorate injustice by plugging the lacunae and fortifying the systems at fast pace only time will tell? Certainly not the squabbling politicians and the lethargic management.

Till then seek mercy from the Divine? Jai Hind!

New Narrative & Environmental Concerns!

Finally!

People stomped their foot down and pressed the button after seemingly unending rancour at the hustings. Year 2019 was a year of emergence of the right, left, center, neo intellectuals, urban maoists, violence mongers, secularists, muslims, Hindus, communalists, pseudo secularists and intellectuals, castiests, loyal and disloyal in media, nationalists, religiously autocratic, traitors, peace makers, those with colonial imprint, soft and ultra thinkers. You can go on adding all will literally fit in the description of this colorful rhetoric.

This election came with the tremendous revelation of English vocabulary, and the participation of enlightened people who helped decide and clear the consternation. The latter may not understand the former but have certainly proved to be intelligent voters. The caste and creed politics has been diluted and the masses are gullible and ignorant no more.

The results came as a big, relief not because a particular dispensation was reinstated but because electoral politics was fortified, pertinent issues were highlighted, and the momentary right judgment prevailed. The rabble-rousers and demagogue were sidelined. (Voice of the People).

And I believe the trust in the EVM was finally established...at least till next elections.

Our Environmental Concerns!

With hope, India proceeds for the next five years for betterment of the peoples live, robust national security, demographic/religious harmony and settlement of prevailing issues and problems. All these are ever ongoing processes. The exemplary display of people participation was the most encouraging aspect that only a democracy can deliver.

The concerns expressed here and the optimum solutions certainly matter. But I feel the environmental concerns in this country always take a back seat vis a vis the imperatives pictured here. The neglect -seemingly absurd to some - subdued by the imperatives is frightening and depressing. With the impending climate change, rising pollution levels, damned rivers, damaged ecosystems and vanishing species a bleak future awaits us.

The Governments cannot reduce poverty, tackle health issues, provide robust careers, and improve living conditions without preserving the environment in a perfect state of equilibrium.

The environment concerns like preservation, conservation and natural resource management etc will remain pivotal to the well being of the Nation. Hence good governance should be inclusive and attentive of environmental concerns.

Unfortunately in democracy there are hardly any leaders who understand the microcosm that is Earth in the Universal scheme of things, and how sensitive it is to human interference be it infrastructure development for rapid economic growth, or urbanization imperatives.

It is the charisma of rapid transformation that makes people blind, but these promises or actions are proving to be more beneficial for the upper strata of the society rather than being egalitarian.

Yes linear developments should be for servicing the masses in qualitative manner, like expansion of communication highway into deep interiors, hygiene and health imperative like Swacch Bharat, alternative energy production that would cover extensive settlements, cheap connectivity between the rural and urban settlements and so on. This kind of much desired development is what the country needs.

Large scale infrastructure development using imported sophisticated technology may augur direct investments in India but unlike the liner development ethos the FDIs may prove to be unstable or not profitable at all. In this rapidly changing World, technological developments and innovations can make investment in third World countries with cheap labour improbable in the future.

For many in the ruling dispensation certain genuine and pressing environmental concerns appear regressive and unwarranted or simply put an impediment to the developmental goals, often drawn hastily. The long term damaging effects are often difficult to quantify and hence resistance or dissent are considered as inconsequential.

This apathy is nothing new, as I have already mentioned the imperatives that dominate our vital concerns. There has to be tangible approach to industrialization and infrastructure development keeping the fall out of schemes or planning discrepancies in mind. We can learn much from the developed countries whom we emulate often.

Irreversible fragmentation of forests, exploitation of prime lands for mining, urbanization, extensive road construction all are often at the great cost to the environment.

There should be stringent regulatory norms which would discourage unplanned architecture or plug hastily implemented unviable schemes. Much to the consternation of environmentalists and conservationists (wildlife) even the judiciary is often not condescending.

With the massive population bulge and tremendous biotic pressure as the result agricultural practises have often caused imbalances especially where fragile ecosystems have been brought under the net. The problem is further compounded by urban - rural convergence that is taking place in India. This may be due to career pursuits but in an agrarian economy shaping local eco-friendly infrastructure could stem the rot and encourage local youth to find options within.

What is crucial, and is becoming more and more so is the public apathy towards issues regarding the environment. One reason is that these matters are never highlighted and the people are not aware of the wide spectrum of ailments it can lead to...which will eventually hurt them more. These issues are not part of political discourse as they apparently lack the pull of the promises (often unfulfilled) of short term economic doles, of rapid transformation of the society and quick generation of ubiquitous wealth...and of course the material transformation into a modern age.

The environmental issues facing the country remain confined to the battles between NGOs, conservationists, the judiciary and the ruling dispensation. Sometimes the press takes in the peak but unfortunately these matters do not attract audience in exponentially large numbers like a dhamakedar (block buster) news item would. For them readership, and TPA for electronic media is all that matters.

The crux of this article is that environmental awareness and large scale participation of the masses is a must if positively identified and well planned projects for the Nation's benefit have to be implemented. They should no longer be confined in the reigns of administration/politicians alone. The participation can take place through information transmission, addressing the concerns and taking the views of the masses. Peoples participation in projects deemed viable should come through active role of people represented by the environmentalist/conservationists/experts along with the administrative set up. Things should no longer be confined to public bodies alone with closeted execution.

Are Remaining Sustainable Habitats Less Important than P.A.?

After the poisonous spring - the ransaking of our precious habitats and mass killings of our wild animals, the aftermath is still in a precarious state. In India large swathes of forests, grasslands and mangroves and other niche habitats have been completely ravaged throughout the past centuries. Not forgetting our marine life and riverine ecosystems which are under attack as well.

Should we not declare an emergency for the sake of diversity?

We have come to a point where we have to notify the remaining habitats with perfect ecosystems as protected areas (PAs). Albeit thankfully, this conservation measure has proved as a boon for the endangered species like the tiger, rhino and swamp deer little do we realize that this development has come about as an imperative rather a shameful imperative thanks to our misdeeds.

Swamp Deer

The biggest damage has been brought about by rapid expansion of agriculture in order to feed our ever increasing population. But this has been done at the cost of forests and grasslands which has resulted in the decimation of many species in the wake and brought about near extinction of those which are now labeled as endangered. Fast spreading unplanned settlements in rural and urban areas has resulted in complete disappearance of land habitable for other creatures.

But the paradigm has changed we are in an industrial age now and rapid urbanisation is an associate which was not the case in the agrarian era.

The creation of core inviolate areas have provided much needed undisturbed space for the diverse life forms in India. At least an iota of land has been wisely spared for others by a humanity that has come down heavily on land and ransacked ninety percent of mass under one pretext or another.

We have failed to rationalize land as a precious commodity and that it should be included under the ambit of resource management in order to use it sustainably.

Sabai Bhoomi Gopal Ki!

The saying stands true but is often interpreted wrongly. The land belongs to Lord Gopal and its creatures - the latter means all life forms and not just humans. But in the contemporary era we have begun to interpret the saying to facilitate our own greed and the rabid development that is taking place.

Concretization is one of the deadliest activity that is taking place within our towns and cities besides digging the Earth for minerals and coal. Remember for every platform we make of concrete we kill a habitable land and the creatures that depend upon it. The building industry is supplemented by raw materials from nature like the sand and pebbles which damage the ecosystems. The fumes from steel and cement plants are an industrial hazards of which the general populace knows very little.

Unrestrained use of our fast depleting resources does not impact only quantitatively but the end products like deadly chemical affluents, pesticides and toiletries are polluting our rivers and waterways and poisoning streams and precious pools of water which sustain diverse forms of life in our neighborhood including us humans.

Similarly we are fast losing remaining shreds of habitats in our surroundings which were once complete ecosystems. Nevertheless these still support small life forms which are important anyway. Take a peek in your neighborhood you will find birds, butterflies, jackals, hares, foxes, civets, porcupines and even hyenas, leopards and wolves.

If you do not desire to save these creatures then you should not subscribe to this article. These precious life forms and habitats are being lost to urbanization spreading its tentacles far and wide, and due to our lack of regard and our callous attitude. We do not care where we are heading to hence leave it on our nextgen to face and suffer.

In this context it has become pertinent that there is a paradigm shift as to how we perceive development and immediately stem the rot. The remaining sustainable habitats are being subjected to exploitation under the spanner of development an imperative where in alternate is never seemed to be found or deemed to be looked for. Such is the haste that we think nothing of the greater ecological impact our actions will lead to.

The dispensations are always hell bent to outdo the previous in order to present impressive figures in the index. This is usually at the cost of our precious land and all its inhabitants. If the dispensation is not circumspect regards the preservation of habitats that have gone through centuries of evolution to come to a stage to support life and be in a state of equilibrium...much needed to sustain it for posterity, should we as responsible not step in stem the rot? What we should we do if the succesive governments do not pay heed to what all is precious?

Act as responsible citizens and speak, write and act!

Murdering The Big Cats

The recent news article about the murder of Avani tigress of Pandharkawada in Maharashtra is a grim reminder of how we treat denizens of the forests especially our National Pride. The tigress was said to have killed some people in the neighboring region in a period of year or more.

Avani was shot dead by a private hunter as the story goes sanctioned by the PCCF Maharashtra. Alternative means of controlling the virulent predator was perhaps limited to paper work.

The ideal first step would have been to tranquilize the tiger especially since she was said to have been accompanied by her cubs. Little is known of her cubs (if any) since the news reports are limited to the menace she was supposed to have caused.

While shooting the man eating tigress her cubs should have been taken into account. A safe passage in captivity should have been provided since rearing them in the wild would have been impossible. Now with the the mother gone they would be difficult to trace and probably die of hunger. When organizing such campaigns the authorities should be aware of the critical status of the species. With tiger numbers at shamefully low level hasty imperatives could prove disastrous in the long run i.e. if we are serious about furthering the cause of our National Pride and an animal of prime ecological importance.

Whether all norms were followed or not a detailed investigations would reveal the truth. But in a country where truth can be suppressed with ease using pressure or monetary lure there is little hope that the facts will emerge. Nevertheless now that the deed has been done efforts should be made to trace the cubs if any. This would perhaps ameliorate the damage caused to the vulnerable species.

The action also speaks of tremendous pressure exerted by humans whence faced with a problem animal. Such is the pressure from people and politicians that all hell breaks loose and the imperative becomes the noose and no rational or mitigation measures could be taken except shooting the animal dead. The courts too are not of much help as human life on Earth is seen supreme above any other life forms.

We are still under the hangover of the Raj whence all predators were considered as vermins and exterminated by offering a reward. Human first attitude is terribly tilted and other forms of life on Earth are like third grade citizens. While the thugs and goons are nurtured by some politicians anomaly in animal behaviour is considered as threatening to all humanity. We are simply incapable of finding alternate solutions for animals with aberrant behaviour and shoot out orders are the consistent norm.

The problem in India is the spread of human footsteps all over the land. We have spread with such alarming zeal that few natural lands are in preserved state of perfectness. The ecological impact of this has been disastrous and is being worsened by dissecting or destroying few remaining habitats in India on the pretext of development. These are the causes of sad state of land use in India made worse by uncontrolled ever expanding population.

Large tracts of forests cleared for agriculture and industry lie degraded providing no viable returns. These should be returned to nature or used for expanding urbanisatination or for the industrial expansion that the rulers are so zealous about. None of the protected areas should be brought under the axe of development.

Worshipping natural elements like rivers, mountains, animals, trees, reptiles and birds seems utterly insensible doesn't it?

Consideration of natural world should not be associated with any ism whence it is holistic. The Vedas have given us this deep understanding five thousand plus years ago, they have preached worship of divine in nature. Conservationist will equate this worship for preservation ethos which is an essential set of practices in order to save the Earth and its innumerable species - the other life forms.

It does not take much to realise that we live in an ecosystem which comprises of a complex web of life intermingled as well as dependant upon natural abiotic elements. Our lives are much dependant upon these elements, hence the atonement should come much sooner than later.

Worship is an acknowledgement of the supreme truth as well as paying respect. Whence nature is creation of God than all that he has endowed us with should be worshipped or accorded deep respect making it worthy of preservation. For our own good!

Five thousand years back this truth dawned upon the Vedic Civilisations of northwestern region of the subcontinent. Purana, Upanishads and Sutra all espouse this cause. Hence elements of nature were classified with patriarchal & matriarchal entitlements that accorded a deep sense of reverence in the due course.

The ancient sacred texts simplify the concept of holistic nature worship using manifestations that highlight the value of elements on the planet. Living with nature has always been the way of life for homo sapiens, divergence from the way came due to disassociation with the wise texts. The result is there for all of us to see rampant urbanisation, pollution, global warming, hunger and disease.

This (Vedic) was a simple system of according equity or value to elements of the web which play a major role in maintenance of equilibrium on this fragile Earth. The system does not try to explain the intricacies of preservation rather offers a pill coated with sugar. Why? Well all do not wish to go deep into scientific explanations or interpretations of phenomenons associated with Earth which are responsible for our survival.

Odes and paens have constantly reminded people of this equity and so has numerous myths, legends and folklore in India. The rich and vibrant cultural past was endowed with compassion for other life forms precisely because of values inculcated by the ancients thoughts in the subcontinent.

Even religious teachings advocate this virtue of responsible living. Unfortunately rapacity has overtaken us, as a result earthly climate control is completely out of order, millions of species have become extinct or are on the verge, violence and chaos have taken over the planet and created an apocalyptic situation.

From the Vedic civilisation has evolved many thoughts in the country which have flourished right into the contemporary era. This is associated with our inheritance and accords space not only to myriads of elements but diverse thoughts as well. This is what makes India a pluralistic society in true sense deciphered in simple terms it percolates down to live and let live.

Analogy Aliens & Terrestrial Intrusions

The search for the esoteric aliens is an ongoing human endeavour, it is terribly exciting and completely trespasses boundaries of our imagination mired in colourful garb of cosmic dust. There is a wild goose chase for discovering alien life. The UFOs have taken us by storm, and the mysterious objects continue to enamour through the media. Star Wars has completely engulfed our mind with highly evolved aliens travelling through the vast void that is the cosmic space in spaceships that are in-comprehensive for our mental faculties. They appear less destructive and often friendly and human. We have been brainwashed by exploits of Superman saving humans. He is from the outer space a different World. Superman has been able to conjecture a friendly image of superior aliens contrary to what we may experience in reality....if ever.

Most of us have either not read or forgotten the War of Worlds by H.G. Wells and live in a Utopian dream of discovering benovalent extra-galactic life.

We are not alone! Ha!

But do we realise the consequences of coming in contact with highly evolved extraterrestrial creatures. The event could be disastrous and may lead to extreme subjugation and even complete annihilation of man kind.

Lets draw an analogy in order to come to some startling facts and consequences that between exploratory humans with high technological abilities and resources and the less able.

The exploratory quests or conquests have taken place throughout the recent history with objective being economic loot, missionic zeal and eventual settlement. The search for spices seems benign to the common man - a historical perspective that is completely misleading.

We are well aware of what transpired under the guise.

The arrival of Christopher Columbus on the North American shores and subsequent colonisation was by no means a favourable event for the indigenous communities as we know very well. The Spanish conquest of Southern America, the colonisation at hands of European powers not forgetting the sufferance for centuries in India and perhaps elsewhere at hands of Central Asian marauders - an extension of vicious and overpowering Arab Imperialism of that time.

The indigenous communities or locals have been brutally ravaged and plundered by these incursions, their culture and religious identities have been completely or partially destroyed by the constant proselytism and foreign ideologies and cultures imposed hopelessly out of sync with indigenous historical evolution. Some were turned into economic slaves and exploited mercilessly for ages. The rest is scripted in the annals of history often containing badly eroded and manipulated facts. The passing of time has lead often to complete amnesia regarding ones roots and cultural/religious past. (But to be fair there have been instances of arrivals being inclusive or less destructive or even completely benign).

The events have been the harbinger of incorrigible instinctive slave mentality. The altered demographics have been instrumental in creating divisive tendencies between people of same genome and has often resulted in continued bloodshed and eventual division of lands. More so the impact of these conquests are still continuing in one form or other Worldwide creating constant upheavals.

In short a heavy price has been paid by the locals due to the incursions of terrestrial aliens. Why all this will not happen with the arrival of extraterrestrial beings who can travel through bizarre incomprehensible maze of cosmic pathways from distance ranging from few to many extra galactic scales uncountable light years away. This certainly leads to them being highly evolved.

The disparate technological superiority, advanced mental and physical abilities of aliens will result in complete subjugation of human society totally enmeshed in internecine conflicts. We will be like sitting ducks enslaved, exploited, subject to epidemics caused by foreign microbes, raped, plundered or even subject to genetic intrusions.

Are we prepared?

In spite of the technological advances we have yet not been able to explore our own Universe forget about reaching the extra-galactic cosmic realms. Our weapons may prove to be Diwali crackers whence faced with those yielded by intruders from superior civilisations. Actually our imagination limit is the only succour at our disposal if we think of being attacked by aliens with violent or ravaging dispensation.

Further!

Look what we have done to our natural World, the environment we have inherited, millions of beleaguered life forms facing mass extinction. The World anyway is slowly dying thanks to destruction of habitats and the ecosystems contained within, the resultant climate change, water and food shortage, pollution and more is destroying us albeit slowly.

With humans exploiting every inch of land as population grows, industrialisation advancing rabidly, improper resource utilisation taking place, and worst our greed for amassing wealth - the future of the Earth is doomed. Armageddon has become a reality.

Then why fear the aliens whence we have inherited such deadly instincts?

The inevitable will happen and the only recourse for us is to build new colonies on other inhabitable planets till we destroy that as well.

In case of India the five year plans have to be comprehensive in true sense as we have a vast assemblage of the down trodden living below the poverty line. Informal economy limits the playing fields to the rich and the fortunate. Our Nation comprises of diverse human profiles subsisting on all steps of the economic ladder, unfortunately it is busting at its seams lower down. Hence all should benefit from economic endeavours of the State.

In current scenario dominated by impending climate change or global warming economic planning has to be circumspect - discouraging unfriendly practices. This makes tackling inequity a challenging task as lot of old norms the unfriendly practices which are causing environmental disturbances have to be done away with. The old practices have to be conducted in a greener way or completely abundant hence innovation & technology has to step in. Greater stress has to be placed on cottage industry especially those pertaining to production of endemic specialities, and arts and crafts. Global appeal has to be created for indigenous production especially from the rural sector. This means induction of innovative practices and contemporary technologies at grass root level for production of globally acceptable products.

Sound policies also means greater stress has to be placed on education and instilling technological proficiency amongst our masses. Education can be the biggest poverty alleviation instrument besides being helpful in eliminating social evils and conservatism - both are the need of the hour. Without tackling these it is difficult to come out of economic quagmire that the developing country like ours faces.

Alternative energy is one of the positive sources which could solve our energy crisis in a friendly manner. It can also be instrumental in alleviating poverty by providing fuel at lower cost. Alternative energy would be an indirect and direct growth boosting factor. It has to be seen what policies are shaped by Governments in India to encourage generation. The majority of sufferers from polluting environment are living below the poverty line in India. Hence improvement in quality of life in the country should not be a top down approach it should be the reverse.

The scourge of developing economies is rabid industrialisation, a haste that creates lot more problems and solves less. In order to achieve a rapid growth detrimental aims and objectives are unthinkably pursued which cause lot of environmental distress besides social injustice to local residents (sometimes).

Highly impressive economic growth does not mean production of unmanageable numbers of luxury cars or extensive stressful housing complexes. This is what years of faulty planning and myopia has led us into. Ill planned industrial complexes near urban areas are major cause of pollution leading to unmanageable health problems that large cities in India are facing.

In order to feed the ever growing millions we have ravaged our forests and other fragile ecosystems due to fast expanding agricultural fields, commercial wood logging, and livestock without a second thought. Though with the creation of protected areas the rot seemed to have stemmed but this is not the case everywhere. Primal land is still being targeted for economic gains and this spells bad conservation policies.

Improper utilisation of land at the cost of last remaining natural places, valuable resources and our inherited wealth are the damage rabid industrialisation does besides releasing large amounts of pollutants in the air.

We have become a human centrist society, and completely disregard nature and other life forms. Habitat destruction has been the norm since times immemorial and continues till this day. Most of the conservation efforts remain on paper, are poorly implemented and some die unheard due to legal entanglement. In a fast developing India this seems to a sector of least concern. Hence to many of our policy makers environmental concerns especially that relating to our remaining natural lands and wildlife conservation has no importance or perceived as conservationist nuisance. Even for the ruling Governments this has no place as populist policies are of prime importance for remaining in power. The gain is that of mega corps with paltry benefit to those employed. Corporate influence on Governing bodies is well known, and this is what does the utmost damage. Industrialist gauge their profits from mega projects and totally ignore environmental factors.

Unchecked population growth is another factor that is proving detrimental to environment besides increasing poverty in India. Although active efforts have been in this direction since decades but we are still heading to the most populous status on Earth. Hence we are eventually going to leave more carbon footprint on Earth that others.

In order to undo what missteps we have taken in the past with grave consequences we will have to restart from step one with an out of the box thinking.

Vendor Politics - All Professions Are Respectable

Ridiculing a person for his profession in a classist manner using cheap invective is unbecoming of National level parties. This is not surprising at all since the citizens are very much aware of the degraded level of vote politics being played in the country. The people look forward to a strong opposition in the parliament as a means to strengthen democracy and not a grouping of people indulging in populism and unruly behaviour.

This is also suggestive of the kind of people that come forward to manage the affairs in India. Well this certainly does not apply to one and all since there are many politicians of unquestionable repute in this country. But it is the proportion that matters, the participants with despicable thoughts, inclined towards corruption and are bound to be inefficient, roost the rule. This augurs bad for the country which is the largest democracy with a highly stable structure.

Resorting to personal jibes in a manner not befitting of seasoned politicians has been a norm lately. The issue based approach does not apply to the politicians in this country. In their overzealous attempt to usurp political power all civilities are kept asunder much to the horror of the common man who is certainly not impressed.

Opprobrium of lowest level are the highlights of the political campaigns. Insidious remarks, lowly vilification and slander marks the election campaign.

Nowhere is there an effort to bring forth issues that relate to the country neither is there an effort to highlight winning policies that the Nation desperately needs to come out of the quagmire of extreme poverty, illiteracy and phenomenal number of social anomalies that prevail.

The meme deriding the "chaiwala" trade of our Prime Minister is nothing but a display of absolute arrogance. People in professions pertaining to small scale economy should not be an object of ridicule. To survive not all citizens of this country would be involved in professions pertaining to economy of high end scales. The instance is nothing but a National disgrace and people behind the episode should be taken to a severe task so that there is no repeat.

The apology does not mitigate the insult that has arisen out of this episode towards a person at an utmost respectable post. And if the instance has emerged from right under the nose of top figures in the party, it certainly would prove to be a negative impact on the outcome of the recent elections to be held.

The ruling polity defines the meme as classist and anti poor and why not. Deriding a profession which appears lowly to some speaks only of an attitude not befitting politicians who could be managing the country in the future or are already doing it.

I think this embarrassing episode should remind politicians where they are heading. Citizens look desperately towards the country managers for solutions that would mitigate tremendous problems and difficulties that the common man is experiencing even after seventy years of independence.

Padmavati - A Case of Surpassing Artistic License?

Well the title does not tells the truth, as the film has not been screened to the public. I have not seen it. May not see it, since I do not see films..often.

Only a handful of people probably journalists and politicians have seen the film. A journo article I was reading in the local Hindi daily was nothing but praise for it. He was privileged enough to have attended the closeted premier.

No one it seems has been able to gauge the reason behind the eruption of massive protests in Rajasthan as well as all over the country. This keeping political opportunism aside.

The one primary reason that I seem to understand is that the eruption of protests against the film as the Queen - adored by all of us - is being projected on the screen, perhaps relegating her to a commoner status. No one in his right mind would like the personae to be seen dancing or frolicking about like a commoner. This may sound chauvinistic but the sentence bespeaks true emotions of the masses of which I am one. But of what I have heard so far such sequences have been presented in a sanctified manner in the film?

Another reason for the protests could be apprehension that the artistic license could have been crossed over surpassing the limit. Rumours always acerbate issues which is in the case of the film Padmavati.

The media makes matter worse in spite of playing the constructive role of an eye opener and an educator. The puerile debates like questioning the very existence of the honourable queen is itself provoking.

Sometimes Hindu Nationalist or Right bashing appears that Hindus in general are being subjected in guise for a gleeful ridicule. This is the work of pseudo secularist and opportunists with communal bend of mind.

In democracy the right to protest is very much apparent, but violence and threats have no place in a civilised society. People of this country should adopt a very broad and rationalistic outlook shunning aside old ideologues and dogmas impractical in the contemporary world.

But then there is an audience limit as is the artistic or expressive limit of the authors and creators. If you err by hurting sentiments of people by going recklessly overboard it could result in chaos, loss of life and property and what not.

I hope great director that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is has not erred, and has been circumspect enough in projection on the screen truth nothing but the truth.

Tiger in India: A Species Invasion?

Species Invasion

Or is it an invasive species? The tiger I mean!

From the cold confines of Siberia in the Palearctic region the tiger migrated into India about ten thousand year back. This happened much after the tectonic plate movement and the submergence into the Asian mainland.

A lot has changed by the tiger migration which have taken place all over Asia. The predator became tertiary carnivore and occupied the top of food chain in many ecosystems. In many cases it has become an indicator species as well. The prevalence in a region of this big cat does augur preservation and protection by the virtue of its indomitable presence. Even the Project Tiger for the conservation of this species in India benefits the whole ecosystem and its elements. Hence all seems to go well by this natural time bound invasion. Moreover it has not displaced the Asiatic Lion which was its precursor having arrived from the Ethiopian Region. The two big cats subscribe to two extremely diverse habitats in India.

Cultural Invasions

Well is this not akin to an invasion similar to that of the Mongols, Moguls and or that by the British? This question deems pertinent as after all we too belonged to the same ecosytem aeons back. But this is not anymore since we have completely alienated ourselves from the natural World and created our own colony on Earth.

The demographic and cultural changes in India brought about by invasions are a major challenge to the country faced with an internecine battle between inherited cultural ethos and the adapted foreign practices and beliefs which will take a long time to naturalise. The division of the country is an example of the effects of disruptive invasions. But this phenomenon will continue to prevail in some form or other, it is our capacity to absorb and integrate that will result in existence in harmony. This virtue will eventually sustain a diverse but unified system which we call our country.

Humans

More than the invasive animal and plant species, humans have managed to colonise the Earth in disastrous proportions, and multiplied to such extent that our survival is slowly being threatened by limitation of natural resources and our own irresponsible usage. This is nowhere more evident elsewhere than in a heavily populated country like ours. Another threats arises from our lifestyle which aggravates the consumption, and not to forget chemical and nuclear weapons of mass destruction. The rapidly evolving strains of deadly microbes is another invasion that is threatening our survival.

A species invasion is understood as that which invades and then rapidly populates in an ecosystem that is not native to it. But this does not necessarily mean the specie is not compatible with complex web of life and abiotic factors that prevail in the area under conquest. On the contrary the invasive species often propagates unchecked eventually damaging the habitat, disrupting the ecosystem and over powering native species to the detriment of environment. Many species have become by unnatural species invasion triggered by humans. The Dodo is a living example besides rabbits and dogs in Australia.

The Tiger

Invasions are disruptive? Well not always, those which are time bound natural spread of species manage to settle down with ease learn to coexist and eventually become part of the ecosystem - ineradicable and indelible. In case of the tiger this has proven to be the case. The slow spread can be attributed to adaptive changes the animal had to undergo in order to survive under changing weather conditions and the new habitats containing unfamiliar elements.

The tiger conservation in India is not a sentimental or elitist approach as it appears to some. It is downright sensible and practical approach, keeping in tandem with our Vedic cultural inheritance that makes us realise the value of the environment and those of the elements contained within.

The Battle

After a successful habitation of the subcontinent, the survival of the tiger was insured in India. Hunting as sport was prevalent way back but it did not take a toll of the species. But with the development of modern weapons hunting turned from sport into an elitist addiction and egotist fascination this proved to be destructive on wide scale. Another factor detrimental to the tiger's survival in India was the vermin concept that the British brought along with them. This resulted in mass destruction of not only the big cats but many other carnivores.

The invasion of agricultural practices became more destructive to the habitats with population explosion in India. Unable to produce food for a rapidly growing populations habitats including the forests all over the country where cleared with fervour and converted into farm land. This also resulted in unchecked settlements into deep recess of remote confines which had been left untouched since aeons. There was no recourse, the country had been checkmated by the population explosion beyond redemption. This is what rabid industrial developments is auguring in the country resulting negative climate change, global warming and pollution of uncontrollable magnitude.

The rapid conversion of habitats, hunting beyond proportion and urbanisation of settlement sounds like a death knell for the tiger. During or post 19th century the animal's population began to dwindle unchecked. But it was in much later era that realisation dawned upon us of the species imminent extinction.

Battle Continues

The decline in the status of the tiger continued unabated post independence. It was in the sixties that the extreme threat level was acknowledged. The wildlife protection act and the initiation of Project Tiger Conservation Program by the Government of India has augured hope for the hopelessly embattled species on Earth.

Tiger Deaths A Sad Plight of A Beleaguered Animal

With the electrocution of a tigress (Jr. Kankati) at Bandhavgarh another critically endangered species loses number. The worse to happen is that she was in custody of her cubs totally dependent. This would mean a loss of four big cats. Negligence, misfortune, accident whatever is stated the sad story is that no answer has been found to prevent deliberate electrocution by local poachers near the reserves.

Incidences of ghastly electrocution of this dwindling species is not new yet no solution has been found. The menace continues unabated thanks to burgeoning human population that surrounds reserves in India. Man animal conflict is taking its toll not only in case of big cats but other critically endangered animals as well. This is a discouraging plight of wildlife conservation in the country.

We have taken over lands after destroying niche habitats in order to survive. This is besides the large number of tracts that are not tilled. Suggestive of bad land use policy unfortunately the issue is not a National imperative. And we continue to overpopulate.

We talk about human rights even in sensitive regions which have constricted beyond regeneration capability. We do not justify alternate existence/sustenance in order to preserve if the project does not carry sufficient economic leverage. Wilderness is truly battling survival in India.

Is conservation a wash off of our guilt?

It could well be because we have not yet inculcated values that accord rights to other life forms. We are shamelessly a human centric society. On one hand we zealously discuss climate change, environment change etc but our actions are diametrically opposed our efforts are sham.

Not only neglect or disregard for other life forms and nature, our actions, development goals and attitude are totally destructive and devoid of any concern for mother Earth that sustains us. When the rot will be stemmed is anybody's guess.

The spiralling downwards of big cat population continues - Panna, Pench, Sariska, Kanha to name some. Numerous tigers are missing - presumed to have been poached. Although tigers travel a long distance to find new territories this is a rare occurrence. Many such predators vanish due to poaching, habitat destruction, mismanagement, lethargy and inconsideration especially in reserves which are not in the limelight. The vanishing species dies unsung.

Male tigers rarely switch territories unless until forced to since this may also mean loss of young cubs they have sired. The overtaking male kills them instantly if the female is not able to protect them. Whence common sense prevails the males do not leave the area they are commanding.

Recently at Kanha National Park a male tiger in the buffer area was electrocuted, purportedly the wire was stretched to kill small game. The unfortunate tiger walked in. Well who knows! Neglect of small crimes leads to more organised, deadly, and concerted efforts.

The poachers got away with minor punishment exposing the legal lacunae that exists whence crime against wild animals is concerned. There seems to be a complete lack of political will in giving the vital elements of our ecosystems their due.

States keep on losing big cats purportedly due to poaching. In spite of all the patrolling and protective measures in place the animal is losing ground. It won't be a surprise if the recent exhilaration of rising numbers turns into deep despondency.

This is not only a conservation challenge, our pride as a Nation is deeply involved. If we fail or falter we will lose face like never before.

None Above The Law

With the conviction of another guru as announced in the recent news, the law of the land has prevailed. Nobody is above the law, even the so called God men with mystical powers and prophetic ascendancy as many claim. The mass following is overpowering and the blessed (sic) assume autocratic powers and eventually commit heinous crime under the garb of the holy.

The religious/ideological zeal created by cults and some sects is able to sway masses into becoming overzealous and fanatical followers. Though many God men have been controversial - it is the followers of some that resort to violence creating a tremendous stress on law and order machinery, disrupting public life and even causing death of innocent.

This problem is not peculiar to India since many such instances have happened overseas as well. The rise in radicalisation or extremism in many countries may not be attributed to mystical God men but nevertheless some local clerics are able to sway their followers using an equally or perhaps more vicious indoctrination. These rabid clerics are no less than God men, perhaps deadlier as they are legalised as head of a place of worship which has large number of followers.

Due to fearful sanctimony that is created around religion or radical beliefs especially that which prevails around places of worship these harbingers of violence escape undetected in the initial stage.

The zeal is impressive and captivating and even the right thinking people are taken in initially. The truth emanates whence lot of damage has been done. Even at this stage political wranglings, fear of the masses, and the uncertainty of outcomes makes law agencies hesitate. Eventually whence the die has been cast action is taken. But by this time extreme damage has been done by radical indoctrination and eventual violence that is emitted by vile sermons and conversations of the wrong kind.

When the matter escalates beyond control it becomes a threat to the Nation itself and sometimes even the integrity of the constitution is challenged. In case of dissent external elements are able to take full advantage of the situation creating further chaos and threat to stability.

This is a warning for India, religious apparatus should never be allowed to enter the system of governance. Zealots should be kept at bay. Policies favouring religious or cultural systems eventually lead to vigilantism or religious autocracy which most often is violent and leads to death of innocent. Such ideological prevalence also threaten the fragile fabric of a diverse nature with many religions and sects flourishing in the country.

Legitimate religious practise, diverse as they may be should be protected as is the duty of the State.

Parochialism : Hindrance to Wildlife Conservation

Crucial wildlife conservation projects are stalled due to parochialism which still persists in United India. Take the case of Asiatic Lion translocation from Gir in Gujarat to Kuno Palpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Known as Asiatic Lion Reintroduction Project the exercise to trans-locate a pride of lions is a Government of India initiative. According to Wildlife Institute of India the project envisaged fetching the endangered animal out of isolation and prevent extinction due to disease transmission (epidemics), natural disasters, development projects and severe man animal conflicts.

Earlier, before the decimation of the Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) due to excessive hunting and takeover of land, the species was spread out to many parts of Northern and Central India. Today the lions are restricted to Gir National Park in Gujarat. Nowhere else outside India does the Asiatic Lion survives and its safeguard and conservation has become all the more crucial.

From last remaining population of about twenty two lions the population has grown to more than five hundred animals. This was a commendable conservation effort. But due to paucity of protected area in the last stronghold the predators are roaming in and around human habitations in an area of approximately 20, 000 square kilometers. This movement is a cause of concern to naturalists and conservation fraternity as man animal conflicts could lead to serious consequences for the beleaguered cat.

Palpur Kuno in Madhya Pradesh

After an intense study Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary was found suitable for scientific lion reintroduction - a contingency plan to save the Asiatic Lion from extinction. Taking enough time the State Government with assistance of Central Government the Kuno habitat improvement took place keeping all aspect of the endangered cat's survival. Eventually the habitat with increased pray base was ready for the reintroduction exercise.

Gujarat Government Opposition

The lion reintroduction has so far not taken place due parochialism that prevails. The Gujarat State Government came out with number of issues related to the habitat and conservation practices in MP.

The Government considers the population of lions as a matter of State pride and heritage. Another contention that was put was that the predators have never been trans-located successfully. This does not apply to present context as advance scientific means of translocation and rehabilitation in new environment are in practice. The reintroduction of tigers at Panna and other places speaks contrary to it being a failure. The Government's attitude is nothing but a negative thought which we have still not done away with.

Status

The project is now stalled in a quagmire of legal proceedings, and it seems extrication from this would take a long time if ever. As far as translocation and rehabilitation is concerned we are much better placed with institutional support and backing of advance scientific techniques. The project should be completed as envisaged since conservation is a win win situation for the Nation and the critically endangered animals.

In a surprising turnaround in June 2015 MOEF declared the project as not viable. This was based on some grounds.

It is up to the Gujarat Government to show a positive attitude and co-operate in the exercise for reintroduction of Asiatic Lions to Palpur Kuno. Wildlife conservation should take prominence since it is the matter of survival for beleaguered animals in India and not that of heritage of pride.
