Blogging For Profit - Part 3- Driving Traffic to Your Site

In my previous article we have discussed the steps involved in creating your site. Now once you have created your site you need people to visit your site. The number of people visiting to your site is termed as your ‘site traffic’.
Your site should get high number of targeted visitors. Targeted traffic is the most important pre-condition for you to earn money from your site. Targeted traffic means getting the visitors searching for the same information which your site deals with. It can be a product you are promoting or simply it can be an informative article about the topic people are searching about.

In following paragraphs we are going to see various types & sources of getting Free web site Traffic
There are various sources of getting free traffic to your web site as below

A) Organic Traffic or Search Engine Traffic:
Traffic from search engines means the traffic to your site from the search results of the search engines. You have seen that whenever you make a search for any particular term on any search engine it displays the search results relevant for that searched term. Here you would see millions of search results. You could observe that out of these millions of results only top 10 to 20 results are shown on the first page of the search engine. These top 10-20 pages would get maximum number of clicks from the search engines. Why these 10-20 pages are selected to be displayed on first pages? There are many factors which are determined while selecting those sites. You may refer to my articles on search engine optimization (SEO) for more details.

The search engine traffic is the most converting one because it is highly targeted. This is so because people searching exactly what your site topic or content is all about would be shown your link in search results & they would find your site content highly relevant & the chances that they would buy your product or services are very high.

Search engine traffic is called as organic traffic or natural traffic. This is completely free for you but if you refer to my articles on SEO you may discover that many things go into achieving search engine optimization & it requires lot of hard work & dedication. A good Search Engine Optimization results into a higher page rank in search engines. A higher page rank ensures that your site gets tremendous amount of targeted traffic & that too for free.

Here I would like to give a work of caution. There are many sites claiming that they would guarantee a top page ranking in search engines for your site. Believe me; most of these claims are false. No one can guarantee a top position for your site in search engines. For that you may go for PPC (Pay Per Click) campaigns with various search engines directly. In that case also the position where your link would be shown would depend upon the competitiveness of your Bid amount which you are ready to pay per click. Suppose for example you are bidding on a keyword “Personal Finance” at $10 per click but if your competitors are bidding for the same term at $15 per click. Your competitors’ link would be shown on the top.

B) Free Directory Traffic:
As we have telephone directories there are many online directories which list out various web sites in their database classified into various categories. The purpose of having these directories is to facilitate easy of navigation & easy of searching sites on internet. There are some online directories which have huge databases covering almost all the sites on the internet. D MOZ Open Directory Project, Yahoo, Digg, are the major one to mention here.
You can submit your site free of cost to as many directories as possible. There are multiple benefits of submitting sites to directories.

1) Direct Traffic:
People browsing through various directories would find your link in the category to which you have submitted your site.

2) Fast Indexing by Search Engines:
Almost all the search engines use large databases of various online directories to index new sites into their database. If you have listed your site in those directories the chances that your site would be indexed by the search engines are very high. This is the fastest way to get your site into search engines.

3) Back Links:
As you submit your site to online directories those directories would link you back from their site. Good number of incoming links from reputed directories would improve your link popularity & page rank in search engine results.

C) Commenting:

Commenting is the facility blogs & many sites provide which you can use to express your opinion about any particular article or post or the site as a whole. The purpose of allowing commenting is to build interactivity with the readers. You can put comments on various sites which provide a field where you can insert your URL in the comment form. Visitors of that site may find your comments interesting & may click on your link giving a free visitor to your site. For visitors to find your comments interesting, your comments should reflect your deep understanding of the subject matter.

The commenting on other sites would also earn you a back link from those sites. The site on which you are putting your comments must have a ‘follow the links’ or ‘rel=follow’ HTML tag for your site to get a back link. You can check if a site is designed to follow links or not by viewing the ‘Page Source’ & making a search for tag ‘rel=follow’. A ‘rel=Nofollow’ tag is a way for site owners to tell search engines "Do not follow links on this page" or "Do not follow this link.". A site with rel=nofollow tags would not get you any back link as the search engines don’t follow that link & hence don’t count that as a link to your site.

You should put your comments on sites having a rel=follow tag to get back links to your site. This would improve your page ranking in search engines & traffic to your site.

D) Social Networking:

Social networking sites like Orkut, face book, twitter etc. provides a very big platform to share interesting things with other people. You can include your site’s URL in your main profile page on these sites. People who find your profile interesting may click your link. You can invite people to see your profile. Remember, the effect of social networking is very viral & you may get huge sudden traffic to your links if people find your content useful or interesting.

E) Forum Postings:

There are numerous online forums of people following a particular niche or people interested in something common. These forums provide a base where people share their opinions & many times solve each others’ problems. Suppose if you are an online entrepreneur & want to know if any particular online opportunity is genuine or scam. You may post a question to the forum asking other members to share their thoughts on that. These forums are very lively places in the sense that people share a strong sense of binding to each others in the forum. You may help the people seeking help through these forums & put links to your home page in your Forum Signatures. If people find your comment useful they would definitely check your link. This traffic is highly converting because people have developed a trust in you & your problem solving abilities.

F) Article Marketing or E Zine Publishing:

If you are good at writing good quality articles, you may submit articles to e zines. The term ‘E zines’ is a short form for ‘Electronic magazines’. You can include your site links in the signature box below the articles. Mostly these e zine sites are having very high page ranks in search engines & they are the biggest source of free traffic for you. If people find your articles interesting they may follow the link to your home page.

Article marketing is a very huge topic & here it would not be worth while for me to explain the concept in depth. I would try to come out with a separate article dedicated for this.

In a nutshell, we can say that there are number of ways in which one can drive free traffic to web sites. There are other paid ways of getting traffic which we would discuss in separate article.

Blogging for Profit- Part 2- Creating Website

In part 1 of this article series we have discussed how to select the topic or niche for your blog. Once you have selected the core topic of your blog now its time for you to create your blog or site.

1) Selecting the Title of Your Blog:

The Blog title should be brief & descriptive as well. Ideal size for your blog title is 40 to 80 characters. The title should summarize exactly what your blog is all about. Many people confuse title & description & choose a title that is too long & generic in nature. Remember, your title should be as specific as possible to give a correct idea about what your blog is.

2) Selecting the Web address or URL of your blog:

It is very tempting for you to put your name or your firm’s name in the web address or the URL of your blog. This is the common mistake committed by majority of people. Your URL should be related with your blog topic. If the topic of your blog is about say for example ‘Financial Planning tips’ the URL should reflect the same. Instead of having URL like john-mathew.com it would be better to have URL name like easyfinancial-planning.com etc.

The reason why I am saying this is it is very important from search engines’ perspective to include the core keywords of your site in URL itself. Search engines display results for any search query after searching in their database created by crawlers (automated programs that crawls net & collect information about various websites). The moment some one hits search for any thing on search engines they would be shown ‘relevant results’ from search engines. The URL of the website is the first thing that would be considered relevant by the search engines although they would also consider many more factors while showing the search results. (You may refer to my articles on Search Engine Optimization for more detail)

3) Choosing a Host:

You may choose a free host like blogspot.com or any other free host or you may choose to have your own .com site. If you already have a .com site & you are creating a blog to support it then the blog can be hosted on a free host. There are pros & cons for deciding whether to have free hosting service or to have own domain name. In my opinion you should choose your own domain name for your blog. The major reason for this is it reflects your commitment as a serious businessman & your site is not a fly by night operator. Remember, people should believe in you first before they buy anything from your site. In virtual world your site reflects characteristics of the owner. Although, simply putting up a .com site would not help you to sell & you have to do a lot more other things, it would definitely a positive point to have your own domain.

If initially you wish to start with a free domain & you have plans to convert it to own domain later, I would recommend that you should not start with a free domain but wait till you can afford to buy your own domain.

This may sound harsh but my friends there is logic behind why I am saying this. If you make a start with free domain & after say 6 months you wish to convert it to own domain you would face many practical difficulties to do so. If you have great & original content most of the search engines would have already indexed your blog in their databases. If you change your hosting you will have to wait until your new URL is again indexed by search engines. The search engines might consider the content of your new site as duplicate content & may even blacklist it. Although now a days some of the free hosts provide redirect facility if you buy domain from them but the search engine effect is not clear.

Another aspect to be considered here is the number of links to your blog from other sites. If you have incoming links from other sites & you decide to change the host then your new site would lose these links. Remember that the number of incoming links is the most important factor search engines consider while deciding your page rank. To avoid losing incoming links you will have to contact each webmaster who has linked to your site requesting a fresh link or editing existing links. This is not practical unless you have very few incoming links or you have a very good personal relation with the busy webmasters linking to your site.

4) Blog Design & Theme:

Your blog template should reflect a sense of professionalism & you should avoid too much glossy templates. You would find thousands of sites providing free templates. You may choose a good looking & decent template from such sites. Before using these templates you should ensure that these templates are user friendly.

The most important thing to remember is that you should not over crowd your site with too much graphics, banners or annoying pop ups. Most of the blogs promoting affiliate products fill the side bars with as many banners as they could. Over crowding your site with banners would distract the attention of your visitors & they would simply get them selves out from your site.

5) Use Meta Tags:
Meta tags are the HTML codes that are visible to search engines but not to the visitors. I highly recommend you should have meta tags generated for your blog. These tags let the search engines know about your site. Meta tags include Title Tags, Description Tags & Keywords Tag. These meta tags allow search engines to easily index your site. Meta tags make your blog search engine friendly.
