Asking George Barris about how he built the Batmobile is, for some fans, like having Michelangelo walk you through the Sistine Chapel or touring Fallingwater with Frank Lloyd Wright. Recognizable by car fans and comic book fans alike, some of whom may have never rebuilt a Ford 390 V8, it is arguably one of the most iconic cars of all time, a pop-cultural juggernaut, burned into the faraway memories of baby boomers who grew up watching the whimsical “pow!” “whiz!” Batman instead of the gravelly voiced superhero of our generation. And the very first Batmobile is going up for auction at Barrett-Jackson under the bright lights in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan. 19. “I'm just honored to do this for George,” said Craig Jackson, CEO of the auction house that bears his family's name. “I've known him probably 30 years, something like that. He's been coming to the auction forever. So I was really savoring spending a lot of time with George and just having him tell his stories and share his pictures.”

This one is Batmobile #1. Peel back the black paint and automotive archaeologists can find shades of the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept -- a cartoonish, chrome-laden body that caricatured the sweeping optimism of the 1950s within twin bubble-tops. A significant car in itself, the Futura co-starred with Glenn Ford and Debbie Reynolds before languishing in a Hollywood backlot for 10 years, when Ford sold it to Barris for the princely sum of $1 (plus “other valuable consideration”).

To transform the Futura into the Batmobile, Barris and company extended the fins inward until they were flush with the body. The shop removed the catfish-wide chrome grille and split the gaping mouth in two, adding a wire slicer in the front for whatever gratuitous challenges the writers scripted. The headlights took on the form of Gothic buttresses. Wheelwells were opened up to clear ordinary-looking five-spoke wheels, wrapped underneath conventional-looking flares. And that was just the bodywork -- the rocket tubes, turbine engine, and Bat-Phone would come in time. Barris was preoccupied with making the Batmobile as much of a star as Adam West and Burt Ward, Batman and Robin, respectively: “If you're going to do it that way,” he had told Batman producer William Dozier, “I would have the Batmobile act just like what you were doing with the stars. 'Pow,' I'd send rocket tubes out. 'Bang,' I'd have oil squirters and chase lights. “So I made the Batmobile become a star -- it would actually act and do scenes like that. And that's why it became so famous, because it was the first time I ever made a car be an actor.” http://www.autoweek.com/article/20121221/carnews01/121219866#ixzz2Flk1rcOU

Barris and his team had just 15 days to transform the natty old Futura, and just $15,000. In some places the limited budget gets cleverly disguised. Look at these gas sprayers, Barris points; they're made from lawn sprinkler fittings from a local hardware store. The jet engine in the back is made from a five-gallon paint can. Everything is labeled: Nail Spreader, Bat Chute, Bat Ray, even the turn signals as Bat Turns. Maybe more people would use their turn signals if they incurred the wrath of the Dynamic Duo. The Bat Chutes are authentic drag-racing parachutes that were used to complete the Bat Turn, a maneuver only accomplished via the magic of Hollywood. “We were shooting for TV Guide there, on the off-ramp of the freeway,” said Barris, gesturing to the 101 Freeway that runs behind his shop in North Hollywood. “And I pop my Bat Chutes. I come over to the side, park it and start to pull out the Bat Chutes -- and here comes the highway patrol. 'Who are you to have parachutes on the back of a car on the 101 Freeway?' So he wanted to give me a ticket. And I said, 'This is the Batmobile, and we were road testing it!' And he let me go. We were road testing it to fight crime.” Read more:

Unfortunate Road Situation, Slavic Style MOST OF THOSE WHO DROVE in Russia know that the quality of roads in this country is so terrible that it’s not even funny. But you, the reader, should review the following images — and next time you hear your cab driver speaking Russian — just sit back and relax: the driver knows what he is doing. The images come from the website that has been set up yesterday by Russian human rights activist Alexey Navanly, where readers post images of roads in need of repair and the website automatically generates a complaint letter to the authorities in charge of road safety. If the authorities ignore the complaint, the site automatically generates another letter, this time to Prosecutor General, demanding investigation. Readers posted around 900 images in one day. We’ll also briefly note that several days ago, PM Vladimir Putin announced that Russia will spend $285bn on roads over the next decade and that road construction is considered one of the most corrupt businesses in this country, with bribes accounting for 50% of the costs.

table talk Set It Up New Year’s osechi ryori boxes explained

2012-12-22T00:00:00.000-08:00

Trying to find somewhere open on and after January 1, when the New Year holidays have shut doors all around Japan, can be trying. Hence the tradition of osechi ryori, or seasonal food, dishes targeted at providing sustenance over the laidback days at home. Most can be prepared ahead of time, lasting for days when kept in a cool environment. Like everything else in Japan, osechi ryori can be bought packaged exquisitely in deluxe boxes called jubako. At department stores such as Takashimaya, late October sees the spectacle of the first day of pre-order, when lined-up customers stampede inside to snap up the coveted limited-edition boxes. These tend to include offerings from Michelin-grade and other award-winning chefs, top-class hotels, and famous ryotei (luxurious Japanese restaurants)—and can fetch up to ¥200,000 per box. For those without a six-figure salary however, local supermarkets and conbini also sell—more affordable—box sets. Some mix in Chinese and Western elements, while others highlight regional cuisine. Every year has its trends, and this one is no different. Look out for a proliferation of low-calorie options, and “yawaraka osechi”— soft foods for elderly customers.

COMMON COMPONENTS Tazukuri—Candied dried sardines, formerly used as fertilizer in rice paddies, hence their other name gomame (“50,000 grains of rice”) Kazunoko—Herring roe simmered in soy and dashi broth, symbolizing fertility Kuromame—Simmered sweet black beans, a pun on the word “mame” for diligence and hard work in the upcoming year Kohaku namasu—Pickled, red Kyoto carrots and strips of white daikon make up the celebratory colors of red and white Kamaboko—Steamed fish cakes, also in the nationalistic colors Kuri kinton—Mashed sweet potato with sweet chestnut, the kanji is a play on prosperity Yude ebi—Boiled shrimp, whose bent backs refer to having a long life (check out some elderly on the bus for a visual explanation) Kobumaki—Kelp, often wrapped around herring or salmon. A play on the word “yorokobu,” for happiness in the home Tai—Sea bream; a play on the congratulatory greeting “omedetai” Sato imo—Taro root, symbolizing a great number of descendents, from the way the little potato-like vegetables proliferate Renkon—Lotus root, the holes of which allow us to see clearly into our future Daidai—Bitter orange, whose name is a homonym for future generations Look out for spice packets for steeping in sake to make o-toso. The spice pack looks like a tea bag and is filled with herbs including cinnamon and dried sansho berries, and produces a delicious drink for New Year’s Day, thought to stave off illness during the winter season.

Need to plan for Aussie challenge from now on

2012-12-21T23:42:00.001-08:00

India's win in the first T20 at Pune was so facile as to make many wonder why the team had faltered so badly in the Test series. An exuberant young fan even ventured that England would now be thrashed roundly in the limited-overs matches. We’ll get the revenge for last year’s whitewash one way or the other,’’ he said. Therein lies not just the flaw in understanding of the game amongst fans, but also the danger the Indian cricket establishment getting its priorities mixed up. To assess Tests, ODIs and T20s with the same yardstick is to compare marble, limestone and chalk the same breath. This, of course, does not take away anything from India’s fine performance in Pune. Every contest demands ability and motivation, and teams must play to win. Moreover, this victory will taste sweet to the Indian players, especially skipper MS Dhoni, after two months of heartburn and setbacks. Also read: Living in denial, BCCI style However, victories in limited-overs matches should not obscure the frailties that exist when playing Test cricket. In Indian cricket, that has often been the case and, as has become evident over the past 15 months, a recipe for disaster. After the second T20 against England, India are scheduled to play a five- match series against Pakistan ( two T20s, three ODIs) followed by a five- match ODI series against England. All these are international fixtures and important to win. But even if all matches are won, it should not cause a memory lapse of how the recent Test series was lost. There are lessons to be had from the defeat against England: inadequate fitness and planning foremost among these. Unfit players are a cardinal sin at the international level and lack of forethought perhaps even more so. For most of the Test series, the focus was needlessly on pitches — almost as if to psyche the English players out — and not on performances. As it happened, England were not only mentally tough, but also showed better skills and adaptability to cut the ground under Dhoni and Co. The difficulty for India’s selectors begins when they start putting down names on paper of those likely to play against Australia. The core group has shrunk drastically, and the list becomes meagre when you consider calibre, form and fitness. Of those who would make this list without ado, I can think of only Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha and Dhoni — though he would have an asterisk against his name where captaincy is concerned, and Sehwag because of his iffy fitness. Harbhajan Singh has lost form and Zaheer Khan both fitness and form. Even more vexing is the case of Sachin Tendulkar, who seems to be in an existentialist crisis. Will the selectors speak to him and work out an exit plan? It’s about time they did. These are all high quality players who can make a difference if fit and in good fettle. They should be thrust into domestic cricket, and their progress closely monitored. Selection for Tests and other internationals should not be based on reputation. Looking ahead to the Test series against Australia, therefore, the planning has to start right away. Barely three months remain before the Aussies arrive here, and considering how poorly India have fared recently, this may just not be enough time. Remember, England planned for almost six months prior to coming to India. But better late than never.

Delhi gangrape: Yuvraj Singh dedicates man-of-the-match award to victim

2012-12-21T23:27:00.002-08:00

Pune: Indian batsman and cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh on Thursday dedicated his man-of-the-match award to the victim of the horrific and brutal gangrape and assault in a private chartered bus in Delhi. Addressing the press, Yuvraj said that the whole Indian cricket team was concerned about the girl and had found the incident disturbing. He added that the whole team was praying for her. The budding 23-year-old physiotherapist was gangraped and manhandled in a moving bus on Sunday night, an incident which shook the nation, leading to angry outburst across the country. Yuvraj first took three wickets and then scored crucial 38-run knock in India's five-wicket win. "I came particularly to dedicate this Man-of-the-Match award to the girl who got gangraped in Delhi. It's very sad to know what has happened and the whole team is very concerned," Yuvraj said at the post-match press conference

Yuvraj prayed that the girl should recover at the earliest. "I do not what is the state of the girl now. I want to dedicate it to the girl and her parents. I have been reading a lot about this and this has been very disturbing. I am sure the whole of India is rooting for her recovery," Yuvraj added. Prior to this, Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary had dedicated his man-of-the-match award against West Indies last year in Chennai to the victims who lost their lives during a fire that broke out at the AMRI hospital. Salt and sea salt (difference)?

2012-12-20T08:54:00.000-08:00

According to The Mayo Clinic and Australian Professor Bruce Neal, the health consequences of ingesting sea salt or regular table salt are the same, as the content of sea salt is still mainly sodium chloride. Buzzle.com says this: What Differentiates Table Salt from Sea Salt? Besides the difference in the manufacturing process, sea salt and table salt differ in the following ways: While only sodium and chloride ions are present in table salt, sea salt has other minerals like iron, sulfur and magnesium that are naturally present in it. Sea salt has a better taste and texture than table salt as it contains traces of other minerals. These minerals help maintain a healthy balance of electrolytes in the body. The refining process of table salt strips it of all of its minerals, other than sodium and chloride. This makes it an unnatural substance as compared to sea salt. Although, due to the higher mineral content, sea salt may be considered to be a healthier choice than table salt, it has its own drawbacks. One major disadvantage of this salt is that it is a poor source of iodine. The iodine that is added during the refining process of table salt makes it a better source of iodine than sea salt. Another health concern that sea salt raises, is the fact that it is obtained from sea water that contains a number of impurities. The sea water is neither boiled nor treated. Sea salt is obtained with minimum processing. Table salt is available in the form of fine, white crystals. Sea salt, on the other hand, may have a slight grayish color if it is from the coastal areas of France, or may have pinkish hue if it came from some other exotic locale. It may be coarse or fine-grained. A small amount of an additive (usually, silicon dioxide, the primary ingredient of sand) is present in table salt. It helps prevent caking, it also promotes a smooth flow of salt. This additive has GRAS (generally regarded as safe) status. Due to the presence of many minerals, sea salt is not as 'salty' as table salt. But, it is more flavored.

Illegal wildlife trade threatens elephants, rhinos and tigers

At least 600 rhinos have been killed so far this year in South Africa. Tens of thousands elephants are killed each year for their ivory. There are as few as 3,200 tigers left in the wild. To tackle this threat, WWF has launched a global campaign with partner TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network. Laws exist to protect elephants, rhinos and tigers, but governments are not doing all they can to save them. Be their voice and join us in asking governments to protect threatened animal populations by: increasing law enforcement imposing strict deterrents reducing demand for endangered species products Rangers and communities living near protected areas are also being threatened by armed poachers going after wildlife. Criminals involved in illegal wildlife trade are distributing guns, intimidating communities, and bribing officials in order to get what they want.

The Big Melt: Fighting the Arctic Thaw Arctic sea ice is melting — and at a rate that is alarming scientists. It should be alarming to all of us. Out of sight, out of mind? Not so. While we may live far from the scene of this meltdown, we need to pay attention and act. Why does it matter? We count on the Arctic ice cap to help regulate our global climate. The ice reflects light and keeps the ocean — and the earth — from overheating. The Arctic thaw is causing rising ocean temperatures that contribute to global warming. Arctic temperatures, including Alaska, western Canada, and eastern Russia, have risen by 4-7 F degrees over the last half-century. This record rise in temperature in the Arctic region could lead to changes in climate patterns that will affect the entire planet. Scientists are also looking at the melting ice cap as a contributor to changing, extreme weather patterns. “I understood firsthand the the deterioration of the arctic sea ice on my expeditions to the Arctic,” said Sebastian Copeland, a Global Green board member and environmental activist. “The movement of the ice and accelerated melt have made impossible a return trip to and from the North Pole on foot, as was done up until fifteen years ago. On the Greenland ice sheet changes are so dramatic that they can be tangibly measured by expedition departure and return dates: the government no longer issues permits for summer travel on the interior since 2010 given the rate of surface melt.” Following this summer of extreme weather comes a new report released by the University of Colorado’s National Snow and Ice Data Center that confirms the frightening trend of rapidly melting ice in the Arctic. Predictions indicate the ice cap will shrink to a new record-breaking low. Some Facts: Sea ice cover is 47% lower than it was 30 years ago Since 2007, sea ice cover has reported its lowest levels on record In August 2012, sea ice cover dropped to a new low: 4.1 million square kilometers, breaking 2007′s lowest recorded level of 4.26 million square kilometers Even more alarming: global warming is rapidly accelerating the melting of the ice shelves in Antarctica and Greenland. Sadly, some of our nation’s leaders think it’s comical for us to fight rising seas. Well, sea level rise is no joke, and we can take action in a way that creates jobs and a greener economy. I wrote a Huffington Post blog about sea level rise — it received more than 150 comments from a range of environmentalists and skeptics. Why there are some that think there is still a debate is not just a mystery — it’s maddening. There is no question about the facts before us. We need to act now, and you can help us. Please share our sea level rise video on your Facebook page, sign our letter to President Obama urging him to fight climate change, and make a donation to Global Green to support our programs and initiatives to fight climate change.
