Some are cheap while others are much more expensive. However, they all have one common denominator, they are cars designed specifically for the police. Some cars look so good that locals and tourists pose to have their pictures taken in front of them. However, even the police cars that don't have much in terms of looks can perform extraordinarily well in the hot pursuit of fast moving vehicles.

Classic cars captivate us with their beauty, rarity and engineering,
with the memories they evoke, the history they capture. The articles
collected here present concise, authoritative profiles of more than 400
American and import classic cars built from 1930 to 2000.
The grandest Imperials, Lincolns, and Packards are just some of the unquestioned American classics represented.
Bentley, Bugatti, and Rolls Royce are among the many import-brand immortals featured.
These articles also embrace great cars that hover just outside the most-exalted circles. So you'll read about the 1954 Kaiser-Darrin DKF161, 1955 Chrysler C300, 1959 Studebaker Silver Hawk, and other bona fide collectibles.
Classic cars can be modern favorites, too, and can even be cars celebrated for their quirky individuality.
That's why we've included articles on such recent gems as the 1990-2000 Acura NSX, 1987-1990 BMW M3, and 1992-1995 Ford Taurus SHO. It's also why we acknowledge such delightful eccentrics as the 1958 Edsel Pacer, 1951 Henry J DeLuxe, and 1954 -1956 Nash Metropolitan.
Each article places the subject car in its historical context,
and outlines the qualities that make it a classic. Attributes such as
its performance or styling are included in a list of "Pluses." Deficits
like build quality or propensity to rust are counted among its
"Minuses."
A vital key to classic and collectible status -- the number of
each car built -- is listed in a "Production" roundup, while handy
charts list vehicle dimensions, weights, and price when new.
Details about engines, their horsepower, and the years in which they were available are provided, as well.
To make your journey easier, we've divided these classic cars alphabetically by manufacturer, and separately by decade.

Tracing the rise of the British modified car and associated cruise
scene back to its roots has always been the source of much debate. Many
would point back to the original vintage and classic car rallies of the
50′s and 60′s. Others make reference to the legendary Ace Cafe London to
Brighton cruise, an event synonymous with classic motorcyclists. The
notorious hot rod scene also argues a strong case, in
fact many popular modifications derive from that era. It all depends
how far you want to go back in time, perhaps to the point from which you
hold the fondest memories. Everybody of course, has their own view.
Most of us however would agree that the birth of the modified car
world as we know it today, truly began in the early eighties. Iconic car
launches including the MK1 Golf GTi, the Escort RS Turbo, the Renault 5
GT Turbo and the Peugeot 205 GTi created a market of dedicated
followers with a passion for performance cars that would last a
lifetime.

In the late eighties and early nineties these cars were joined by a
new raft of Japanese imports, fuelling demand and raising the profile of
the scene even further. Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru sold the
Civic, Supra, Skyline and Impreza in huge volumes, in many ways
repairing some of the damage caused by years of lacklustre models and
shoddy reliability. European manufacturers responded to the Japanese
influx with a wave of iconic motors including the BMW M3 E36, the
Peugeot 306 GTi-6, the Renault Clio Williams, the Vauxhall Calibra Turbo
and the Volkswagen Corrado VR6. Thousands of former petrol heads look
back at this era with affection, and good examples of such models still
attract high prices.
At the turn of the century, the scene was changing once again.
Modified cars were getting wilder, budgets were becoming more flamboyant
and the target market was getting younger. ‘Chav culture’ had well and
truly taken over, re-igniting the rise of the ‘boy racer’. The scene was
awash with negative publicity, police intervention and cruising
crackdowns but despite this, the modified car business was at its peak.
Industry leading magazines such as Max Power and Fast Car were reporting
record sales, and body shops and tuning centres had never had it so
good. Following the release of cult film The Fast And The Furious, and
console games such as Need For Speed, as dusk fell in every major town,
cruisers could be seen prowling the streets in greater and greater
numbers.Ironically, due to the dramatic rise in insurance and fuel
costs, or possibly because modified car fans were getting younger,
engine sizes were actually getting smaller. Despite the fact that many
enthusiasts were still driving powerful motors such as the Saxo VTS or
Leon Cupra R, cars such as the Corsa C, Fiesta Zetec and Polo MK4 were
becoming immensely popular.
This trend brought with it a massive shift in consumer spending.
Whilst the styling market had never been so lucrative, the tuning sector
was almost grinding to a halt. Older enthusiasts who could afford the
insurance and running costs of tuned high-performance cars were growing
older and settling down. Cosworths were traded in for Mondeos, and
thousands of modified cars were scrapped or dismantled for parts. It is
difficult to say exactly when it happened but to make matters worse, by
2002 the market was flooded with cheaply made bolt-on parts. The shift
in spending from tuning to styling parts meant that the products in
demand were now less complex to manufacture. As a result, hundreds of
businesses in the UK started importing directly from factories in China.
Everyone was copying products from someone else, and with more and more
consumers buying goods from eBay, quality stepped down and price became
king.
If ever the industry has experienced a ‘dark time’, this was
certainly it. Droves of retailers closed their doors, and British
product manufacturers slashed their product development budgets or even
went out of business. Never was this more poignant than in 2006 when the
UK’s biggest performance exhaust brand Magnex ceased trading. To the
modified car scene this was the equivalent of losing Woolworths from the
British high street, and although the brand is thankfully now under new
ownership, it proves how difficult a period the industry had suffered.
At the time of writing, the modified car scene is still in troubled
waters but despite being in the midst of a global recession, we’re
beginning to see positive signs of recovery,. We’re also seeing further
changes in buying habits. Whilst the market is still very
styling-orientated, demand for high quality parts is growing. Despite
the fact that pre-modified cars such as the Corsa VXR, Civic Type-R and
Focus ST are growing in popularity and diminishing the need for
aftermarket modifications, sales of premium styling parts from quality
manufacturers such as Lumma, Team Dynamics and Momo are on the
increase.Product development is back in full swing, and it is
interesting to note that many parts are now being developed for brand
new models such as the Suzuki Swift, the new Corsa D and surprisingly,
for prestige models including the BMW M6 and Porsche Cayenne. This may
be in response to the previous credit boom that granted mass access to
newer, more expensive cars, or even due to the credit crunch, with
owners choosing to modify their cars as an alternative to replacing
them.
Whatever the reason, the market is changing. Styling parts are
becoming more subtle and are being manufactured to a higher standard.
European models, particularly German, are back in favour and sales of
mild tuning parts such as braking and suspension components are
recovering. Customers are now getting a better deal, not by sacrificing
quality but by shortening the supply chain. The industry is getting
leaner, meaner and is growing in confidence, and that is definitely a
good thing.

Best Modified Cars

Generally speaking the most satisfactory way to classify and categorise classic cars is
by reference to the year in which they were manufactured. We have to
start somewhere!Further classification must introduce a geographic
component. The US probably represents the largest sector here, but the
UK and other European countries contribute hugely to the rich tapestry
that now constitutes the classic car world.Vintage cars
are probably still best defined as those built before 1930. So that's a
big part of the territory. Then come those built between 1930 and the end of World War 2
so, again a substantial sector. This era has been defined as the age of
the "Post Vintage Thoroughbred". Not a bad label by any means.Once we
get beyond World War 2 things become a little more subjective. In the UK
there is the zero rate of road tax which applies to any car built
before 1973. Somewhat confused because it defines a "build" date rather
than a "registered" date, but that aside this sector is fairly easy to
classify. So if it's not vintage, and it's not a Post Vintage
Thoroughbred, but it was built before 1973, then it almost certainly is a
"Road Tax Free, Classic".Coming further up to date there is definite
confusion. There are classics being produced today, by small specialist
manufacturers and even home build kit car fans. There are also the
eccentric and bizarre that only their owners would ever define as
classic. The first thing you should do
is to find out what the car you are considering purchasing is presently
selling for. You need to know the make, model, year, rather it has all
original parts or not, and be able to accurately approximate its present
condition. Next, you should check out the internet for the websites
that specialize in providing the estimated value of the car you are
considering obtaining. If the numbers work for you, then this is
defiantly the easiest and safest way to drive away with the car of your
dreams. The next avenue you can attempt to pursue when you are looking for
a classic car; is to buy one that needs a great deal of work done to it
in order to have it look like it is showroom new. This really is not as
difficult as it seems, even for somebody that knows nothing about
cars. Before you start this process though, it is recommended that you
find a shop that specializes in rebuilding classic cars. Once that is
done, you can start looking around for your new ride. The sales price to
purchase one of these types of cars,
is usually nothing compared to the work and cost required to get it
fully restored. After you find a few that you are interested in, please
be sure to take detailed pictures and videos of the car so that the shop
you will be using can review them thoroughly. If you do your job, and
get great shots of the car, they should be able to provide you a very
accurate estimate. You are almost done now; simply add up the purchase
price and the restoration estimate to get your total cost. Next, use the
same types of websites we mentioned above to find out what a car like
this is presently selling for. Once again, if your figures come out in
your favor, you will soon be driving a new stunning classic car.

There are specialized repair shops for such cars, and one should
consult with them before purchasing any classic car part. Some of these
parts could cost you a few thousand dollars. Remember, when you are
getting your classic car repaired, all of its parts should be carefully
stored. There are certain classic car parts, such as steering wheels or
brakes, which were made to suit the needs of a different time period.
These parts may still be functional, but might not be suitable for
today's world.

And do not forget that classic cars did not come with safety devices, so
there is always a chance that someone may steal a valuable car part off
of your vintage car. You must take care of that before ordering a new
part for your classic car. You can secure the parts of your classic car
by speaking with an expert of your make and model.

Timescales
How much time can you devote to your restoration?
Cost
What is the estimated cost taking into account the timescales you have given yourself?
How much money do you have to restore your car?
How much work will you have to do yourself?
Road Tax
Is the car permanently off the road? If it is not of a certain age will
you need to make the car SORN whilst carrying out the restoration?
Acquiring parts
To purchase parts for your vehicle maybe difficult as many parts become discontinued stock.
It maybe possible to replace the part with a modern alternative.
Second hand parts could be an option although if you can find the part
you need it maybe in the same condition as the one you already have.
Where to find parts.
There are many ways to find parts if you are restoring on a shoe string.
Car parts suppliers.
Some modern suppliers may still have certain parts. Most parts after a
certain period become discontinued, although there maybe a modern
equivalent that is suitable although not authentic. You might even be
lucky and there might be some old stock!
Specialist car suppliers maybe your next option as they specialise in classic cars.
Newspapers and newsagent windows
You never know what will be advertised. You may want to advertise a
Wanted space yourself, but that can be costly. If you want to keep the
costs down ask them for a late space advertisement. If they have spare
spaces to fill and you can negotiate a better advertising rate.
Newsagents window are cheap and effective although localised. Keep a
look out for adverts in your local newsagents for garage clearances,
motor parts and vehicles for sale.
Car magazines
Car magazines can be costly but great for information. Have good look in
the shop to make sure you have the right magazine to suit your car.
Many of the magazines are now online and you may be able to find out
details of specialist repairers and restorers free of charge.
Another cheap way of buying car magazines is to have a look at boot sales and local newspapers. It is amazing what information, books or manuals you can find for very little money.
Scrap yards
Get to know your local scrap dealer or car breaker. Tell them what you are looking for and they can contact you if anything suitable comes in.
Specialist car parts suppliers
Car Associations
Their members have been there and done it. You can find out details of
associations in specialist classic car magazines and on the web.
They will be able to provide you useful advice. Possibly have access to parts and specialist repairers.
Car jumbles
Look out for car jumbles or classic car jumbles. They are always great
to have a look round and you never know what useful part or tool you
will be able to pick up.
Internet
The web is a fantastic source of information. The internet provides
copies of manuals, reference books, association feedback, newsletters
and forums as well as purchasing essential items such as parts, tools
and specialist classic car insurance.
Insurance.

Some parameters and definitions are required and this leads to the first
problem: what exactly is a classic car? And how do you begin to
identify one? The answer is probably the old favourite that applies to
all things of beauty and it is simply that it's all in the eye of the beholder.
One person's classic is another's heap of junk, but there's no doubt that we all know a true classic when we see one.
The earliest mechanically propelled vehicles are now, in the main,
museum pieces that only rarely see the light of day. They are delicate
relics of many a bygone age and evoke tremendous feelings of affection
and attachment in those who love them.
Next are the classics that still represent a part of history long gone
and comprise vehicles that can be nursed and nurtured by those who own,
maintain and love them. Because of the dedication of these enthusiasts,
the rest of us can enjoy the reward of exploring history, in much the
same way as we would explore any part of the development of mankind
through the ages.Coming more up to date are the vehicles that represent
the boom years of motor car design and ingenuity, before computer aided
design took over and resulted in what exists now, i.e. all cars looking
pretty much the same. Modern needs and demands for fuel efficiency,
together with environmental considerations dictate how cars are now
configured. From modern techniques of design and manufacture we get cars
that are incredibly efficient, but perhaps a little boring and unlikely
to mature into what might be called classic cars in the future. Time
alone will tell.Mechanical transportation has been around since the
latter part of the nineteenth century so we have a wealth of history to
draw upon.

This hobby sure requires some high investments. You need to select the
right combination of modification to gain the most out of your car.You
have to make sure that any modifications to your car are safe and won't
disrupt the reliability and stability of the vehicle.Modification for
the vehicle is done according to the ability of the driver and their use
for it.Make sure that the person using it, will be able to handle it.

Modification are simple and will make your car stand out from the rest
with very little work.Parts are freely available off the shelf from
companies such as Spareco, Koni and Spax. For example you can buy Spax
suspension, Janspeed exhausts, Momo rims and steering wheels, body kits,
light alloy pedals, leather or led lit gear knobs, Corbeau race seats
and even race harnesses.

If you have an antique car or a classic car then how much car
insurance coverage should you carry? No matter what type of car you
drive, you need to have the proper insurance coverage.
This brings up the question of specialty vehicles such as antique
cars. If you have an antique car as a hobby or as a dream come true, you
still need to cover it with insurance. Even if you only drive the
vehicle once in awhile it is important to have the proper insurance to
cover it.
An antique car is an investment and the best way to protect it is
with insurance. This brings up the question, how much insurance should
you carry on an antique car? Read on to learn some of the specifics and
then use the free tool on this page for a free car insurance comparison!

What is Considered an Antique Car?

Before the question of coverage is answered, it should be understood
what an antique car is. There are many different categories of cars
including exotic, collectible, and antique cars.
Generally speaking, if a car is more than 25 years old it is
considered an antique. Be careful, because in some circles the word
“antique” and “classic” are interchangeable whereas in other circles the
word “classic” means a car that is 50 years old or more. When speaking
with an insurance company, be sure to ask their definition of these
words.
There is also a difference between an antique and a car that is just
really old. The condition of the car is also what qualifies it as an
antique. A car that is an antique has usually been restored, is well
taken care of, and has some resale value. Its value increases with time
instead of depreciating. Just because a car is old doesn’t mean it
should be considered a classic or an antique. Insuring an old car is not
the same as insuring an antique car.

Should you Get Coverage Through a Standard Car Insurance Company?

Some people think that going with their family insurance company is a
good idea because insurance companies typically offer a discount for
multiple cars and policies. But the big difference is the terminology. A
typical car insurance company
will not take into consideration the restored value of the vehicle.
They only take into consideration what you paid for the vehicle or the
actual cash value.
For example, if you paid $8,000 for a car that needed a lot of work
and you put an equal amount of money into restoring the car, you would
have spent $16,000. But now that the vehicle is in mint condition, it
could sell for $50,000. If you go with a typical policy, you would only
receive $8,000 should something happen to your vehicle.
If you are thinking about skimping on insurance because you only
drive your vehicle to and from car cruise events, think again. Car
cruise events are often crowded with a lot of vehicles in the mix. It is
one of the most likely places to receive a fender bender or worse.
Don’t jeopardize the value of your car just to save a few bucks. If you
are going to spend the money to make a vehicle into a true antique or
classic car, spend the money to protect your investment.

Other Antique Car Insurance Options

To make sure your antique car is properly insured, you can go through
a standard company that accepts Stated Value Insurance or Agreed Value
Coverage. Some insurance companies offer these types of coverage while
others do not.
Stated Insurance is basically where you state the value of your car
and that is the amount it is insured for. Of course you need to provide
proof of the number you come up with. Some Stated Insurance requires
that you carry a deductible, so make sure you discuss this with the
company.
Agreed Value Coverage is similar to Stated Value except that both you
and the insurance company present a value based on research, you
negotiate, and come up with a number you both agree upon. This final
number is what the car is insured for, period. Remember, you want to
insure your vehicle for its replacement value, not what you paid for it
or what you put into it.

Antique Car Insurance Quotes Online

Choosing which company to get coverage through for your antique car
is important. Using an online comparison tool can show you different
companies and what type of coverage they offer. You can see the rates
you would pay and decide which company would best cover your antique
car. Protect your investment and enjoy your antique car with no worries.
Use our online auto comparison tool now to find the proper antique car
coverage!
The Toyota NS4 plug-in-hybrid sedan may hint at elements of the next
Prius, although Toyota says it was envisioned at "removed from the Prius
family." It debuted on Tuesday at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.
The four-passenger NS4 previews a sportier, less conservative look
for Toyota. The NS4 also provides a glimpse at Toyota's next-generation
hybrid drive system — due out in about three years — which will be
smaller and lighter with better fuel economy. No fuel-economy
projections were provided, however.
"The NS4 was envisioned as a dedicated plug-in hybrid separate and removed from the Prius family," said Toyota in a statement.
However, certain elements, such as design cues and the new hybrid
drive system, may end up in the next Prius. One key detail was missing
in Toyota's presentation of the NS4 — that is, whether a future Toyota
plug-in hybrid will have the older nickel-metal-hydride battery pack or
adopt the newer lithium-ion battery pack.
The silhouette of the NS4 is what Toyota calls a "modified triangle." One key design element is a solar panel roof.
The NS4 also previews Toyota's next-generation pre-collision system,
which uses millimeter wave radar and stereo cameras, as well as the
automaker's adaptive driving beam headlights, said to
"three-dimensionally tailor where the light beam is targeted," thus
improving visibility for the driver.
Toyota said the central theme of the NS4 is "the human connection to
the car." The concept features a multi-touch screen "with the look and
feel of a smartphone," said Toyota. The human-machine interface in the
NS4 can "learn" driver preferences "to anticipate driver responses in
specific environments and situations," the company said.

Porsche Details New-Model Rollout

Porsche plans to bolster its U.S. lineup with the addition of several
new models over the next two years, starting with the arrival next
month of the redesigned 911 Carrera and culminating in the launch of the new Cajun compact crossover in 2013.
The 911 hardtop will be followed in the spring by two new convertible
versions. The 911 Carrera Cabriolet starts at $98,250, while the 911
Carrera S Cabriolet is priced from $108,950. Both prices include a $950
shipping charge.
To be formally unveiled next week at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show,
the 911 Carrera Cabriolet is powered by a 3.4-liter direct-injection
flat-6 engine that makes 350 horsepower, enabling 0-60 acceleration in
4.4 seconds and a top speed of 177 mph. The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet gets
a larger 3.8-liter version of the boxer six, rated at 400 hp, providing
0-60 acceleration in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 187 mph. Both
engines come with a standard seven-speed manual gearbox and can be
ordered with Porsche's PDK automated-manual dual-clutch transmission.
Also due here in the spring is the 430-hp Panamera GTS, followed by the Cayenne Diesel, Porsche's first diesel model in this market.
Porsche said the all-new 2014 Cajun, a smaller sibling to the best-selling Cayenne, will make its U.S. debut in 2013.
Mercedes-Benz will unveil two new hybrid versions of its midrange E-Class — one diesel, one gasoline — at the upcoming 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January.
The gasoline-electric E400 Hybrid is intended initially for the U.S.
market and eventually will be sold in China and Japan. The
diesel-electric E300 Bluetec Hybrid will go on sale first in Europe, and
will be available as a sedan and a wagon.
The heart of both models is what Mercedes-Benz calls the "intelligent
modular hybrid concept," which features a lithium-ion battery pack and a
20kW electric motor that produces 184 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid
powertrain can accommodate either a diesel or gasoline engine, and
includes a stop/start system to enhance fuel economy and reduce
emissions, as well as regenerative braking to help keep the battery
charged.
The E400 Hybrid mates the electric motor to a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline
engine rated at 302 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The combination
should achieve projected EPA fuel economy of 24 mpg in city driving and
31 mpg on the highway, compared with 20/30 for the standard 2012
Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan.
The E300 Bluetec Hybrid couples the electric motor with a 3.0-liter
V6 turbodiesel that makes 201 hp and 369 lb-ft. Combined fuel economy on
the European test cycle is projected at 56 mpg.
Mercedes-Benz said it will be the first premium manufacturer to offer a diesel-hybrid production model in Europe.

Ford Fusion

This is the midsize family sedan that Ford thinks can win back the
hearts of American car buyers the same way the Taurus did years ago. The
2013 Ford Fusion not only has dramatic new styling, it has a
wide-ranging lineup that now includes three different gas engines, a
gas-electric hybrid and a plug-in hybrid.
For starters, there's the same 2.5-liter, 170-horsepower
four-cylinder used in the current Fusion. No big news there, but then it
gets interesting. There's a new 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
that Ford says will make the Fusion the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid
sedan in its class. It will deliver around 179 hp and 26 city/37 highway
mpg, or at least that's what Ford says.
Then there's the new 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder, which
will be the "performance" option. It's expected to deliver 237 hp and
250 pound-feet of torque. Not bad, especially when you consider that it
will come with a standard six-speed, paddle-shifted automatic along with
optional 19-inch wheels and tires and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive
system.
For the eco-minded, Ford is doubling down on not one, but two
hybrids. The standard Fusion Hybrid will pair a 2.0-liter,
Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with an electric motor powered by a new
lithium-ion battery pack. Ford says the combination will result in EPA
numbers of 47 city and 44 highway mpg, both of which top the latest
Camry Hybrid.
If that's not enough, there's the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. Ford
says the Fusion Energi will deliver more than 100 MPGe, an efficiency
standard applied specifically for electric vehicles. For comparison, the
Chevrolet Volt is rated at 92 MPGe, while the Prius plug-in hybrid is expected to arrive with a rating of 87 MPGe according to Ford.
All Fusions will ride on a new front-wheel-drive platform that uses a
MacPherson strut front suspension and an independent multilink rear.
Electric steering will come standard on all models, while the hybrid
Fusions will also get acoustic underbody panels to reduce road noise and
improve efficiency. The overall size is up slightly over the current
Fusion, as the new version is an inch longer overall, has a nearly
5-inch-longer wheelbase and is slightly wider.
In terms of technology, the Fusion will introduce a new Lane Keeping
system that does the pesky work of keeping the car going straight. A
combination of an audible warning and even a slight nudge of the
steering wheel will tell drivers when they're slacking in the steering
department. The new system will be paired with adaptive cruise control,
parking assist and blind spot detection to effectively make the Fusion
almost idiot-proof. Almost.

Cadillac ATS

The 2013 Cadillac ATS is the company's latest attempt to build a
better BMW 3 Series. Just about every luxury manufacturer has tried to
do the same before and none of them have cracked the code with any great
success.
This time Cadillac isn't trying the bigger car/smaller price formula it used with the original CTS.
Instead, the ATS is nearly identical in size to the latest 3 Series. In
fact, the ATS is not even a half inch longer at 182.8 inches and
fractionally shorter and wider at 55.9 and 71.1 inches, respectively.
More importantly, Cadillac says the ATS is lighter than a comparable 3
Series, too. It hasn't provided any final numbers yet, but Cadillac
says the ATS will weigh less than 3,400 pounds. We assume that's for the
lightest configuration possible. In the 3 Series lineup that means a 328i with a manual transmission and it tips the scales at 3,406 pounds. Let's hope Cadillac does better than 3,399 pounds.
No matter how far under the 3,400-pound threshold Cadillac gets, the
ATS will be well-equipped to outrun the 3 Series, provided you choose
the right engine. Three different engines will be available, the least
powerful of which is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 200 horsepower
and 188 pound-feet of torque. We suspect this is the bottom-feeder
special, or the car Cadillac will use to drop the price under $30,000
and suck in a few extra step-up buyers who might otherwise opt for a
loaded non-luxury sedan.
The real fun starts with the optional turbocharged, direct-injected
2.0-liter four-cylinder. It develops 270 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, a
significant bump over the 240-hp 2.0-liter engine found in the base 3
Series. Then there's the V6 option, which delivers 318 hp and 267 lb-ft
of torque. Both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic
transmission will be offered, although Cadillac hasn't specified in
which configurations.
An all-new rear-wheel-drive platform underpins the ATS. Cadillac says
the new chassis delivers a nearly 50/50 front-to-rear weight balance.
The front suspension is a multilink, double-pivot MacPherson strut
design, while the rear suspension is a five-link, fully independent
setup. An optional "FE3" suspension will be available that adds
driver-adjustable Magnetic Ride Control similar to the larger XTS sedan.
A set of 17-inch wheels will come standard, while 18-inch wheels and
Brembo brakes will be optional.
As far as interior features go, the ATS will offer all the safety and
convenience features you would expect in an entry-level sport sedan.
Its one ace in the hole is the company's new CUE (Cadillac User
Experience) system. It pairs a touch-sensitive screen with the ability
to connect with up to 10 Bluetooth devices to deliver music, phone and
navigation integration, with a minimalist design that keeps the button
count to a minimum. Like so many other aspects of the ATS, we'll have to
try it out before we'll know for sure if it's an improvement over the
competition or not.

Bentley Will Unveil Continental GT V8

Bentley will introduce a new twin-turbocharged direct-injection 4.0-liter V8 at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in the 2012 Bentley Continental GT.
The new V8, which is being jointly developed with Audi and is said to
deliver around 550 horsepower, will be extended to other models in the
Bentley range.
Audi also plans to use a version of the turbo 4.0 V8 in the new RS7,
among other models, with a formal introduction as early as next month at
the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. Audi also may share its S tronic
seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with Bentley, for use with the new
V8.
Bentley will unveil a face-lifted Continental GTC convertible in
Frankfurt, but that car will continue to carry the brand's twin-turbo
6.0-liter W12, which is rated at 567 hp. Eventually, the redesigned GTC,
due in 2013-'14, will get the 4.0 V8, as will the coupe and convertible
versions of the Mulsanne and the successor to the Continental Flying
Spur sedan.
Also heavily rumored in the European press is a new Bentley SUV,
which is expected to share a donor platform from the parent Volkswagen
Group with the redesigned Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg.
Bentley has said little publicly about the new high-output V8, other
than to note that it is "being designed specifically by Bentley's
engineers" and will honor the brand's ongoing "environmental commitment
to deliver a powertrain that achieves a 40 percent improvement in CO2
emissions."

Acura ILX Concept Debuts

Acura's new entry-level ILX sedan is based on the Honda Civic and
will offer a choice of three powertrains, including Acura's first hybrid
gasoline-electric drive system. The ILX, unveiled here in concept form,
will be assembled at Honda's plant in Greensburg, Indiana, and goes on
sale in spring.
The ILX is being positioned by Acura as its new "gateway" model,
aimed at younger buyers. The basic version will come with a 2.0-liter
four-cylinder engine, while a more sporting edition gets a 2.4-liter
four and a six-speed manual gearbox. The ILX Hybrid will share the
Civic's 93-horsepower 1.5-liter gasoline engine.
Other features include a smart entry keyless access system and

The 2014 Acura MDX Prototype, which previews the next generation of Acura's luxury SUV, will be unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.Honda said the MDX Prototype uses "Aero Sculpture" design language, thus shedding the MDX's hard edges.
One teaser image of the 2014 MDX Prototype was released, showing that
the upcoming MDX is likely to keep its current proportions, but with a
softer, rounder look.
"The 2014 MDX Prototype will feature alluring proportions with
smooth, arching body lines matched to an efficient architecture," said
Honda in a statement on Wednesday.
It did not release any technical specifications about the new MDX.
The current MDX is in its seventh model year. It is likely that Honda
will offer a 2014 MDX with improved fuel economy, as the current model
has a thirst for premium fuel. The EPA says the 2013 Acura MDX 4WD
returns 16 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway.

When the original Honda CR-V debuted in the late 1990s, its mission
was simple: to offer a distinct alternative to more mainstream mid- and
full-size large SUVs. With its car-based design, economical
four-cylinder engine and sedanlike ride and handling, the CR-V was an
instant hit. Priced competitively and offering plenty of passenger room
and cargo capacity for most people's needs, the Honda CR-V has long
enjoyed strong sales numbers and much loyalty from consumers.
Today, the compact- or small-SUV segment has grown to include more
than a dozen different models, with varying philosophies of what
constitutes the perfect blend of size, power and capability. While some
models offer V6 engines and others can deliver true off-road
capability, the Honda CR-V remains focused on its more practical
aspirations. True to form, it is one of the best choices available in
the all-important areas of being both easy to drive and
family-friendly.
Current Honda CR-V
The CR-V was redesigned for 2012, making this the fourth generation
of the model. Though hardware changes are minimal, there are enough
style and feature changes to keep Honda's top-selling compact crossover
fully competitive.
Essentially the same size as before, the CR-V is offered in familiar
LX, EX and EX-L trim levels. Even the LX comes pretty well equipped,
while the EX and EX-L get additional convenience and luxury features.
The EX-L is also eligible for either a navigation system or a rear-seat
entertainment system. You can't get the navigation and the DVD systems
together, however.
Powering all CR-Vs is a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine that's
good for 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque, mated to a
five-speed transmission. On all models, front-wheel drive is standard
and all-wheel drive is optional.
The newest Honda CR-V's list of merits is a long one. Its interior
is intelligently thought out and boasts high-quality materials. Its
ride is more comfortable and quieter than before, and handling and
steering remain high points. Its major shortcoming concerns passing
power in certain circumstances. Our editors found the CR-V's
acceleration peppy enough around town, but somewhat sluggish during
merging and passing maneuvers on gradients -- especially when compared
to its V6-equipped competition. However, as long as your beaten path
doesn't include many steep roads or overly heavy loads, the Honda CR-V
should provide all the room, refinement and performance you will ever
need.
Used Honda CR-Vs
The third generation of the Honda CR-V was produced from 2007-'11.
Compared to the previous-generation CR-V, this one had few key
improvements, including a new liftgate (instead of the previous
side-mounted door with an outside-mounted spare tire), improved
handling and steering, and the option for a navigation system for the
first time.
Trim levels included the traditional LX and EX, plus the EX-L -- the
L signifying leather upholstery (along with heated front seats). CR-Vs
from 2007-'09 made 166 hp versus 180 hp for the following two years. A
five-speed automatic transmission was standard across the board, and
all trims could be had with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
Those looking for maximum luxury in a CR-V should know that the EX-L
gained a power driver seat, automatic climate control and a premium
stereo for 2008. An SE trim level, which slotted between the
traditional LX and EX trims, was made for just the final year of this
generation.
In reviews, we've found this CR-V to be a very well-rounded model.
High points included a comfortable and sensible interior, top crash test
scores and agile handling. Elevated amounts of road noise might be a
problem for some shoppers, as would be the engine's modest power, but
overall this CR-V should be a great choice for a used small crossover
SUV.
Produced from 2002-'06, the second-generation CR-V boasted a number
of improvements compared to the original CR-V, including more power,
more interior room and improved passenger protection. It was available
in base LX or uplevel EX trim. The EX had more features, as well as
standard antilock brakes and side airbags for the entire run (the LX
didn't get them as standard until 2005), so picking an EX might be a
wise idea. Notably, stability control and side and side curtain airbags
became standard across the lineup in '05. The Special Edition model,
available only in 2005 and '06, included exterior styling tweaks, a
hard spare tire cover and heated leather seats and mirrors.
Power came from a 2.4-liter four cylinder rated at 160 hp, though
this number dropped to 156 hp in 2006 due to a revised rating procedure.
The LX had standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive,
while the EX was AWD-only until 2006, when a FWD version was also made
available. Both LX and EX initially came standard with a five-speed
manual transmission, but from 2005 onward the manual was limited to the
EX. The other transmission, an automatic, had four speeds until 2005,
when it was upgraded to five.
In reviews, our editors lauded the second-generation CR-V's
comfortable ride and refined powertrains, though the significant road
noise at speed was deemed regrettable. Some of us found the
four-cylinder a bit meek, but its smooth power delivery and reasonable
efficiency were mentioned as admirable traits. All in all, the
second-generation CR-V was roundly praised when new and remains a solid
choice on the used-car market.
The original first-generation Honda CR-V compact SUV was produced
from 1997-2001. It was priced competitively and offered more passenger
room and cargo capacity than its peers. A manual transmission was added
in 1998, and a welcome 20-hp boost the following year gave it a new
output of 146 hp. In 2000, a leather-trimmed SE (Special Edition) model
was added to lead the model lineup.

Honda Accord Review

Few vehicles over the past three decades have garnered as much
respect in America as the Honda Accord. It hasn't achieved this by being
sporty, glamorous or sexy. Instead, it has, for every year, offered
what most Americans want out of their daily transportation. Take an
Accord for a test-drive and you'll find it comfortable, roomy,
intelligently engineered and easy to drive. Research it, and you'll find
it backed by a solid reputation for reliability, strong resale value
and an emphasis on safety.
It is true that some competing sedans or coupes hold certain
advantages over the Accord. Some are faster while others are more
prestigious or less expensive. What's special about the Honda Accord,
though, is its completeness. It scores well in all of the categories
that matter to people shopping for a family-friendly sedan or coupe, not
just a few. When examined from a holistic standpoint, it's easy to see
why this Honda model has become an automotive icon and one of our
editors' top recommendations.
Current Honda Accord
The 2013 Honda Accord represents the start of the ninth generation.
And for once, it's not bigger and heavier than the one it replaces. This
is likely a response to criticism that the previous Accord had become
too large and too soft. As such, this slightly smaller successor not
only boasts segment-leading fuel economy but also marks a return to the
sporty driving dynamics of much earlier Accords.
Within the less bulky styling is an improved interior with a more
cohesive design and higher-quality materials. The switchgear is less
confusing than before and the HondaLink system allows connectivity for
audio streaming and social media as well as iPhone and Android apps. And
despite the newest Accord measuring nearly 4 inches shorter in length,
there is more rear seat legroom and trunk capacity. Trim levels are the
familiar base LX (sedan only), luxury EX, leather-lined EX-L and
leather-and-navigation-equipped EX-L with Navi. New trims include the
enthusiast-oriented Sport (sedan), loaded Touring (sedan) and LX-S
(essentially the LX version of the coupe).
Under the hood, direct injection debuts for the standard 2.4-liter
four-cylinder engine, adding power (now up to 185-189 horsepower) and
greater fuel efficiency. Although a six-speed manual transmission is
standard on nearly all four-cylinder Accord trims, most will likely be
fitted with the optional continuously variable automatic transmission
(CVT). The available 3.5-liter V6 provides 278 hp and is backed by a
conventional six-speed automatic in all trims except for the EX-L coupe,
where it can also be matched to a six-speed manual transmission.
In reviews, this Accord impresses with its more agile demeanor,
spirited acceleration (with both engines), refined CVT performance,
excellent fuel economy and roomy, comfortable cabin. The Accord's crisp
handling should delight even those who don't consider themselves driving
enthusiasts, as the car simply drives smaller than it is. However, the
ride is on the firm side, which may not suit those used to a plusher
ride in their family sedan or coupe. Overall, this is the best Accord
we've seen in quite some time -- no small accomplishment considering how
consistently well-regarded this segment staple has been.
Used Honda Accords
The previous-generation Accord -- which ran from 2008-'12 -- was
bigger than prior models, yet boasted better engine performance without
any loss of fuel efficiency. As before, it was available as a midsize
coupe or sedan and in a variety of trim levels to suit almost any
buyer's needs. Entry-level LX versions provided the basic amenities
while the top-of-the-line EX-L featured items like leather upholstery,
Bluetooth and an optional navigation system. All Accords came with a
full array of safety equipment, including side curtain airbags and
stability control.
Once again, engine choices consisted of a 2.4-liter inline-4 (with
177 hp for LX trims and 190 hp for EX trims) and a 3.5-liter V6 with 271
hp (268 hp for '08). The four came with a five-speed manual
transmission as standard and a five-speed automatic as optional. The V6
sedans came with a five-speed automatic, though V6-equipped coupes also
were available with a six-speed manual. The most notable changes to this
generation took place for 2011, when it saw a bump in fuel economy and
the availability of previously lacking features, such as an iPod/USB
interface, a rearview camera and shift paddles for the automatic
transmission.
In reviews, we found this generation to be a satisfying family sedan
or midsize coupe, despite increased competition from numerous rivals.
Strong points included a roomy cabin, an agreeable ride/handling
balance, crashworthiness and reliability, while points were deducted for
a button-happy dash, merely average materials quality (previous Accords
were known for high-quality cabins), noticeable road noise and mediocre
braking performance.
Many other used Honda Accords you'll encounter will represent the
vehicle's seventh generation -- the 2003-'07 model years. It was
available as a midsize coupe or sedan and picking an Accord from this
generation should be rather straightforward. Initially, there were three
trim levels: DX, LX and EX. The DX was pretty sparse with features, so
an LX or EX would be a better choice. Side and side-curtain airbags were
typically optional on all trim levels.
Under the hood was a 160-hp 2.4-liter inline-4 or a 240-hp, 3.0-liter
V6 engine. Four-cylinder engines could be had with either a five-speed
manual or five-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual was
available on the V6-powered EX Coupe.
In 2005, Honda introduced the Accord Hybrid. This model's V6
gasoline/electric powertrain produced 255 hp and, in theory, the best
fuel economy of the lineup. In real-world use, however, the car's fuel
economy was disappointing and people balked at its higher price. Very
few Accord Hybrids were sold.
The most significant changes of this generation occurred in 2006 when
the Accord received freshened exterior styling and more power for both
engines. Stability control also debuted this year, as did minor
modifications to trim level organization. In reviews we praised the car
for its roomy and stylish interior, tight build quality, smooth ride and
good crash test scores. Downsides included tepid handling and mediocre
brakes. All said, however, this Accord was an excellent choice for a
family sedan or midsize coupe.
The sixth-generation Honda Accord is also very popular in the used
car market. Available from 1998-2002, this model came in coupe or sedan
body styles and had either four-cylinder or V6 power. In a nine-car
comparison test conducted by our Edmunds.com editors, this car finished
in 2nd place. We noted that the car was not exactly entertaining to
drive but was very user-friendly and competent in all areas. Buyers
should feel relatively free to look at models throughout this generation
as Honda didn't make any drastic changes, though cars built after 2000
have expanded safety features.
A well-kept Accord built from 1994 to 1997 should make for a smart
choice for those on a budget. This model boasted the typical Accord
attributes and, as a used car, should provide better than average
reliability, assuming it's been properly maintained by previous owners.
This generation marked the first time that Honda used its VTEC variable
valve timing system. A VTEC-equipped four-cylinder engine came with the
EX trim level. Accord models from 1995 and upward also had a V6
available. This generation was also the last for the rare Accord wagon.

Honda Civic Review

Since its launch in 1973, the Honda Civic has been one of the most
popular compact cars sold in America. Its success can be attributed to
its consistently high level of fit and finish and an impressive,
long-standing reputation for reliability and low running costs. High
fuel economy, environmental awareness and engaging performance have
also played a large role in making the Honda Civic a top choice for
many Americans.
The latest Honda Civic isn't really a no-brainer choice as its
forbearers were, but it still comes recommended thanks to its clever
interior, wide range of models and aforementioned strong reputation. For
small car shoppers looking for a used vehicle, the Civic is certainly a
smart choice, as its long production run and wide range of models make
it easy to find what you want.
Current Honda Civic
Redesigned for 2012, the Honda Civic is again available as a coupe or
sedan. Mainstream trim levels consist of the familiar DX, LX, EX and
EX-L, with standard equipment levels increasing throughout to include
heated leather seats in the EX-L trim. There are also the Hybrid sedan,
Natural Gas sedan and Si coupe/sedan. A new "HF" (High Fuel
efficiency) version is also available, with gas-saving features such as
low-rolling-resistance tires and subtle aerodynamic tweaks.
The powertrain for the DX, LX and EX versions is unchanged, meaning a
1.8-liter, 140-horsepower inline-4 matched to either a five-speed
manual or five-speed automatic. The Hybrid has a more powerful electric
motor than before (resulting in a total output of 110 hp) mated to a
continuously variable transmission (CVT) and boasting improved fuel
mileage ratings (44 mpg in combined driving). The clean-burning Natural
Gas model puts out 110 hp, while the Si sports a larger (2.4-liter)
engine for this year, which provides greater output (201 hp) as well as
the promise of a broader power spread. The Si is only available with a
six-speed manual transmission.
The exterior styling is a subtle evolution of the previous form,
with more sharply chiseled body sides. The cabin is likewise similar to
before, with intuitive controls and a new multifunction display. Sadly
there's more low-grade plastic trim than what's seen in some of the
Civic's rivals that now have notably more upscale interior materials.
Overall, this Civic is still a pretty capable small car. Its
generous selection of engines and configurations should help it appeal
to a wide variety of shoppers, while typical small Honda traits like
nimble handling and high fuel economy remain intact. However, many
other new small cars that also offer these traits are arguably more
desirable to own. This Civic is a solid pick for a small coupe or
sedan, but we do suggest shopping other top competing models as well.
Used Honda Civic Models
Prior to the current model, Honda sold the eighth-generation Civic
from 2006 through 2011. It'll be the most common used Civic you'll
probably come across, and overall it should be a great pick for a used
small car.
For this generation, Honda offered the Civic in coupe and sedan body
styles with the usual base DX, well-equipped LX, loaded EX,
leather-lined EX-L and sporty Si main trim levels. In addition to the
mainstream trims, there were also the Hybrid and GX (natural gas) trim
levels.
All trims had a broad range of safety features, such as antilock
brakes, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags,
although stability control could only be had on the EX-L, Hybrid and Si
trims. The standard DX trim was pretty bare-bones in terms of premium
features, so you'll have to jump up to the higher trims to get
amenities such as air-conditioning and full power accessories.
Only minor updates occurred during this car's run. The Si sedan
debuted for '07, while the following year saw a limited-edition Mugen Si
model and the addition of a leather upholstery option. For '09, the
LX-S and DX Value Package trims debuted along with a minor exterior
refresh. For the final two years, the Civic continued on essentially
unchanged.
All Civics but the Si had a 1.8-liter, 140-hp four-cylinder engine
paired with a five-speed manual transmission; a five-speed automatic was
optional. The Civic Si, offered in both coupe and sedan body styles,
featured a high-revving 2.0-liter, 197-hp four-cylinder engine matched
to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission.
The Civic GX featured a 113-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that
ran on clean-burning compressed natural gas. The Civic Hybrid came with
a 1.3-liter four-cylinder gas engine and a 20-hp electric motor. Total
output was 110 hp. The Hybrid had an exclusive CVT and earned
EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 40 mpg city and 45 mpg highway.
The coupe was tuned to feel sportier than the sedan, but both are
fun to drive, with quick steering and impressive handling. The 1.8-liter
engine won't overwhelm anyone, but it provides enough power for
comfortable everyday driving. The Hybrid gets fantastic fuel mileage
and the GX is impressively clean, but both suffer from slow
acceleration.
In reviews and road tests, our editors found this Honda Civic to be a
well-rounded car, and it should be a top pick for anybody shopping in
this segment. Thanks to the wide array of configurations, it should
also be easy to find a Civic that meets your needs. The only major
downsides include elevated road noise and a controversial dash layout.
Previous to the 2006-'11 model was the seventh-generation Honda
Civic, which was sold from 2001-'05. There were coupe and sedan body
styles as well as a two-door hatchback. Honda offered its typical
mainstream trims -- DX, LX and EX -- plus a few specialty trims such as
VP, HX, SE and Hybrid. The hatchback came only in the Si trim. Most
models had a 1.7-liter engine good for 117 hp or 127 hp (EX). The Civic
Hybrid mated an 85-hp 1.3-liter four-cylinder gas engine to a 13-hp
electric motor and offered the best fuel economy of the lineup. The
Civic Si produced 160 hp from its 2.0-liter engine. At the time, we
commented favorably about the car's fuel-efficient engines, roomy
interior and top safety scores but were disappointed by the limited
availability of antilock brakes.
Sold from 1996-2000, the sixth-generation Civic was in many ways a
refinement of the style and technology found on the previous generation.
Coupe, sedan and hatchback body styles were available. Sedans were
offered in DX, LX and EX trim levels. Engine choices were a 1.6-liter
good for 106 hp in the DX and LX or 127 hp in the VTEC-equipped EX.
There was also a higher-fuel-economy coupe, the 115-hp HX. Honda didn't
release an Si trim until 1999. Based on the coupe body style, the Si
was powered by a high-performance 1.6-liter engine tuned to put out 160
hp.
Honda's VTEC technology first appeared in the fifth-generation
Civic, which was sold from 1992-'95. The Civic VX featured a
fuel-efficient 92-hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder with VTEC-E. More powerful
was the 125-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder VTEC engine found in the Civic
Si and EX sedan trims. First sold only in hatchback and sedan body
styles, the fifth-gen Honda Civic got two coupe trims in 1993, the DX

Despite spending an impressive six years on the market -- and
enjoying advantages like a roomy cabin and available all-wheel drive --
the compact Suzuki Aerio remained nearly invisible to most consumers. If
you ask us, it probably had something to do with the Aerio's
average-at-best overall report card. To use a football analogy, it was
like a second- or third-string specialty player that Suzuki forced to
suit up against several heavy-hitting, all-purpose first-stringers. This
wasn't a game the Aerio was likely to win -- yet it was a better car
than its sales numbers and anonymity would suggest.
Most Recent Suzuki Aerio
The
compact Suzuki Aerio debuted in 2002 as a sedan and four-door hatchback
wagon. Initially, there were S and GS (later called LS) trim levels for
the sedan; the hatchback came in SX trim only. Later Aerios were
offered in either base or Premium trims. Versatility was always a strong
point for the hatchback -- with the rear seats folded down, it could
carry an impressive 64 cubic feet of cargo.
Aerios were
initially powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine;
displacement was later bumped to 2.3 liters, with a commensurate
increase in power. A five-speed manual transmission was standard on
entry-level cars, while a four-speed automatic was optional on those
models and standard on higher trim levels. The Aerio was available in
either front-wheel or, beginning in 2003, all-wheel drive.
With
either transmission, the Suzuki Aerio was sufficiently responsive for
running errands around town or commuting. However, although the Aerio
provided a soft, smooth ride on the highway, we found there was a
penalty to be paid: excessive body roll around corners, which was
exacerbated by the car's relatively tall, tippy stance. Opting for AWD
settled things down a bit, and of course it improved the Aerio's
traction in wet weather as well. Indeed, that optional all-weather
capability was one of the few compelling features the Aerio had to
offer.
Thanks to its high roof line, the Suzuki Aerio
boasted a surprising amount of interior room for its size, and we found
ingress and egress to be an all-around cinch. The Aerio offered a
generous 14.6 cubic feet of trunk space, too. Unfortunately, interior
plastics quality, execution and overall refinement were below average
compared to the economy class leaders.
Some notable changes
occurred after the Aerio's debut. In 2003, it received a slight power
boost to 145 horsepower (from the initial 141 hp) and minor interior
trim refinements; uplevel GS and SX models got a six-disc CD player and
could be had with all-wheel-drive traction. The 2.0-liter engine was
replaced by a 2.3-liter unit in 2004, and horsepower rose to a rather
impressive 155. Suzuki added more standard features in 2005 and
redesigned the instrument panel, which we had previously criticized as
having hard-to-read gauges and a lack of storage compartments. The wagon
was dropped for 2007, leaving the sedan to finish out the Aerio's
production run by itself.
As a used car, the Suzuki Aerio
does have a few things going for it. Its attractive price when new looks
even better now that depreciation has taken its toll, and its peppy
engine and optional all-wheel drive were pleasant qualities. But the
Aerio was never particularly enjoyable to drive and generally came up
short in terms of refinement and features.

Suzuki Kizashi Review

Suzuki is renowned for its desirable motorcycles, but its cars
historically haven't enjoyed nearly the same respect. The Suzuki Kizashi
midsize sedan is a serious attempt to bring the company's automotive
division up to snuff. Billed as a sophisticated sport sedan at a
family-sedan price, the Kizashi generally delivers. It looks sharp, it
drives well and its interior is one of the nicest in the segment.
While the Kizashi is billed as midsize, its dimensions actually fall
in between that segment and increasingly large compacts. This means
it's in the unique position to compete against both camps. It's larger,
more luxurious and better built than most compacts, yet less expensive
and more agile than the midsizers. We think it's definitely worth a
look, but the biggest obstacle could be finding one given Suzuki's
limited dealer network.
Current Suzuki Kizashi
The Suzuki Kizashi sedan is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder
engine that produces 185 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.
Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional. It comes
in S, SE, Sport GTS and Sport SLS trim levels. A six-speed manual
transmission is standard on the S, Sport GTS and Sport SLS with
front-wheel drive, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is
optional on those trims and standard on the SE and all-wheel-drive
models.
Standard equipment on the base model is impressive, including
keyless ignition/entry, full power accessories, dual-zone automatic
climate control, a USB/iPod interface and satellite radio. Higher trims
net features like alloy wheels, power seats, a sunroof, leather
upholstery, steering wheel shift paddles (for the CVT), a Rockford
Fosgate sound system and Bluetooth. The Sport trims get cosmetic,
aerodynamic and suspension enhancements.
The Suzuki Kizashi's design is an interesting mix of familiar and
novel elements. Some people might see some Volkswagen influence in the
car's exterior styling, but otherwise the Kizashi is its own beast.
Inside, there's an attractive dashboard design with tastefully
restrained metallic accents and upscale materials. Nice touches abound,
such as standard keyless ignition and cushioned chrome-ringed door
handles. The backseat has plenty of room for two full-size adults, and
the relatively high seat cushion actually makes the Kizashi more
comfortable for long-legged rear passengers than some larger rivals.
In reviews, we've praised the Suzuki Kizashi for emulating the
sophisticated driving dynamics of Japanese and European sport sedans at a
fraction of their price. Grip is ample in corners, the ride is supple
yet well-controlled and the steering is a bit lacking in feel but
nicely weighted. Wind and road noise are kept in check on the highway,
and the Kizashi has a sense of straight-ahead that's uncommon for a car
starting under $20,000. The four-cylinder engine is the closest thing
to a weak link here -- it's plenty peppy for normal use, but those
expecting the Kizashi's power to match its sport-sedanlike handling may
be disappointed, particularly if they select the CVT.
Used Suzuki Kizashi Models
The Suzuki Kizashi was new for 2010. In that first year, the Sport
GTS and Sport SLS lacked the "Sport" prefix as well as the associated
cosmetic, aerodynamic and suspension enhancements.

Suzuki SX4 Review

While Suzuki makes class-leading motorcycles that are desired from
Okinawa to Omaha, its luck in the automobile market has been less than
stellar. Most of its models were rebadged Daewoos when the Suzuki SX4
was introduced. This compact car proved the small Japanese company could
make better cars when it took on the project itself. While it's not
quite as fun as Suzuki's two-wheeled vehicles, the SX4 is nevertheless a
thoroughly competent and well-made small car.
Considering that Americans still overwhelmingly prefer sedans to
hatchbacks, the sedan model gives the Suzuki SX4 an advantage over other
subcompact cars that are offered only with a hatch. The available
all-wheel drive on the hatchback also gives the SX4 a decided advantage,
as do both models' impressive build quality and sporty styling.
However, its 143-horsepower four-cylinder engine struggles with the
hefty curb weight, and fuel economy is consequently below average as a
result. If your top priority is having a fuel-sipping compact, the SX4
is not the best choice. Yet while other subcompacts may lean toward
either sportiness or comfort, the Suzuki SX4 does a good job of
providing both, with the added bonus of all-wheel drive and a sedan
model.
Current Suzuki SX4
The Suzuki SX4 is offered in four-door hatchback and four-door sedan
body styles, which are split into two different styles. The sedan can be
had in a no-nonsense economy car guise as well as a "Sport" series of
trims that feature different suspension turning and styling. The
hatchback is available as the sporty "Sportback" or the SX4 Crossover
for those seeking a more rugged compact car with available all-wheel
drive, SUV-like body cladding and a taller ride height.
Underneath its sporty exterior lies a platform shared with the
previous-generation, award-winning Suzuki Swift sold in Europe and
Japan. This translates into a car with ride and handling characteristics
seemingly fashioned for those locales. The ride is on the firm side,
but in an upscale sort of way, absorbing bumps and undulating pavement
with impressive composure. Its steering is also tight and direct,
offering one of the more fun driving experiences in this segment.
For those in colder climes, the SX4 Crossover should prove
attractive, as it is the least expensive all-wheel-drive car on the
market. Featuring three modes, the AWD system can be configured for
maximum traction or fuel economy. AWD Auto is like many crossover SUV
systems that shunt power to the rear wheels only when front-wheel
slippage is detected. AWD Lock is for lower speeds through snow or mud,
while FWD mode is best for fuel economy. In most cases, that's the mode
of choice, since neither body style achieves good fuel economy numbers
for this class.
Picking the right SX4 for you can be tricky, as there are a multitude
of trim levels available. The range starts off with the base sedan,
which is scarcely appointed with full power accessories, a
height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt steering wheel and a
60/40-split-folding rear seat. Added niceties available on both the
upper sedan and Sportback trims include air-conditioning, a four-speaker
sound system, cruise control, automatic climate control, Bluetooth,
keyless ignition/entry and an integrated Garmin navigation system. The
"Sport" sedan options include a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy
wheels, four-wheel disc brakes and an aero body kit.
The interior is one of the Suzuki SX4's best attributes, sporting a
simple, user-friendly design and decent materials. Although not as
versatile as some other subcompact hatchbacks, the SX4 does offer plenty
of rear passenger room and cargo space thanks to a flip-and-fold
backseat that's placed high atop the floor for so-called "stadium
seating."
Used Suzuki SX4 Models
The Suzuki SX4 debuted for the 2007 model year. Changes since then
include the addition of the front-wheel-drive SX4 Sport sedan in '08; in
its first year of production, the SX4 was offered only as an
all-wheel-drive hatchback. Model-year 2009 saw the arrival of a
front-wheel-drive hatchback (known as "Crossover"), a split-folding rear
seat for the sedan and a standard navigation system on upper trim
levels.
For 2010, Suzuki added the SX4 Sportback model and power was ever so
slightly increased from 143 hp to 150. New transmissions -- a six speed
manual and continuously variable (CVT) -- replaced the previous
five-speed manual and four-speed automatic, improving fuel economy A
restyled front fascia, new gauges, a height-adjustable driver seat, an
auxiliary audio jack, a few new navigation features and some renamed
trim levels also debuted for 2010.
It's important to note that every SX4 got standard stability control
for 2012. Previously, it was only available on upper trim levels. For
2011 only, rear drum brakes came on the base and LE trims.

Suzuki Vitara Review

By the late 1990s, the major Japanese automakers had established a
new design direction for compact SUVs by introducing models with
car-based platforms for enhanced comfort and efficiency. However, Suzuki
had been in the cute-ute business longer than almost anyone, and when
the time came to replace its long-running Sidekick, Suzuki stuck to its
traditions for the then-new Vitara.
Essentially, the Suzuki
Vitara was born with the roots of a truck. Instead of adapting new,
lighter unibody construction, the Suzuki maintained a rugged
body-on-frame design. Every Vitara rode on a solid-rear-axle suspension
and came with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with low-range
gearing. Thanks to 8 inches of ground clearance, 4WD models possessed
better-than-average off-road ability. An available two-door convertible
body style also made it possible to equip a Vitara as a fun-in-the-sun
runabout, and responsive steering made it enjoyable on any surface.
Still,
the Suzuki Vitara had too many detriments weighing it down in
real-world driving. Slow acceleration was a problem with either of the
small four-cylinder engines, and a hard-to-shift manual transmission
didn't help. The low-tech suspension could never absorb bumps very well,
the rear seat was cramped (space was identical in both body styles) and
cargo capacity was a modest 45 cubic feet even on the four-door.
Finally, the interior looked dated even when new, and some of its
controls weren't user-friendly.
Suzuki raised the Vitara's
standards in power and features over time, but at both the beginning and
end, we'd still say Honda, Toyota and Subaru had better SUVs for the
street, while Nissan and Jeep had better off-roaders.
Most Recent Suzuki Vitara
While
the upscale Grand Vitara lived to see another generation, the regular
Suzuki Vitara led one lifetime spanning from 1999-2004. Body styles
included a four-door hardtop and a two-door convertible soft top that
was shorter than the four-door by 11 inches in both length and
wheelbase. A 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 97 horsepower was the base
engine on two-doors; a 2.0-liter version with 127 hp was optional on the
two-door and standard with the four-door. Both engines came with a
five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, with shift-on-the-fly
four-wheel drive optional with any combination.
The
Vitara's initial trim lines were JS (2WD) and JX (4WD), though by its
second year that expanded with the JLS and JLX, which became the only
models with power windows, power locks, air-conditioning, and on the
four-door, cruise control. Among two-door Vitaras, the JLS and JLX were
also significant for having the more tolerable 2.0-liter engine.
Many
details changed over the years. Along with the trim line changes for
2000, the two-door Vitara earned standard air-conditioning. For
model-year 2001 came a new grille, seat fabric and an easier-to-use
stereo. In 2002, the JS and JX got dropped completely and took their
1.6-liter engine with them, trimming the Vitara line down to JLS 2WD and
JLX 4WD models. All trim lines vanished for 2003, and only the
four-door model made it to the Vitara's final year in 2004, when a
165-hp 2.5-liter V6 became the new engine.
If
you feel compelled to buy a Suzuki Vitara, later is better: The
improved content and ergonomics of more recent models make for a more
appealing SUV. Regardless of year, try sticking to models with at least
the 2.0-liter engine, whose 127 hp is just enough
