The Pitha is named after twin Goddess Tara & Tarini, who are worshipped here as sign of Adi Sakti. It is the oldest pilgrimage centre and one among the four major Shakti Pitha of India. Goddess Tara Tarini is the presiding deity of most of the houses in south Odisha.

Interesting Tales

There are many folklores regarding the place Tara Tarini regarding their origin. The most interesting and widely accepted one is from puranas. As per some Puranas, Goddess Tara-Tarini was originated from the limbs of the corpse of Devi Sati (Parvati).According to the Purana, Devi Sati Sacrificed here life in the Yagyan Kunda of the Yagyan organized by her father. Then Lord Shiva, the husband of Devi Sati started Tandav Dance by taking her burned body. And on Request of Devatas, Lord Vishnu, Brahma and Sani disposed the body in parts. There created a shakti Pitha, where the parts of the body fell on the earth. And Tara-Tarini is one of them.

Natural Beauty of the place

The place is full of Natural Beauties. The temple situated on the top of the 708ft Kumari Hill is the main attraction of the place. The remodeling of the temple was done very recently. The view of the temple from the hill top to the River Bank of Rushikulya is a thrilling one. Two stones anthropomorphized by the addition of gold and silver ornaments are found inside the temple looks like as human faces are the main Shrine represents the Goddesses Tara and Tarini. The place is famous for the sea beach of Bay of Bengal. The presence of old light house, ruins of old jetty depicts the past maritime glory of Gopalpur. The old jetties were renovated by Govt. of Odisha in 1970 to revive the past glory. Lack of proper commercial activities, the port could not come into the limelight. At present a new jetty is under construction. And once it is completed, it will become an important port of south Odisha.

Scenery of the place

Gopalpur on sea has got a beautiful beach. Serene environment, immense sailing opportunities, clusters of palm & coconut trees, white sand dunes and casuarinas plants makes the beach most pristine beaches of Odisha. The beach is ideal for both swimming and surfing. The horizon of deep blue sea and the blue sky is always a pleasant scene to watch. One can have a feeling that both sea and sky want to touch each other. Unlike the Puri, Gopalpur Beach is a deep one. While wandering in the beach, one can experience the number of boats waiting to sail into the see for fishing. Because of the saline water casuarinas and cashew nut trees grow in plenty here. It adds to the scenery of the place and in some places it separates the sea beach from the sea.

The light house of the Sea Beach is another attraction of the place. The view of the sea and entire Gopalpur town from the top of the light house is a splendid one.

Military Training School of Indian Army is also here at Gopalpur.
