Samsung Galaxy Note 7 review

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is the large-screen phone for 2016 that Android power users have been anxiously waiting to upgrade to, and it takes several cues from the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Sure, the S7 Edge already stretched our fingertips into near-phablet territory with a 5.5-inch display in March. But it didn't have two Note-series staples: a 5.7-inch screen and the S Pen.

The Note 7 maximizes the screen space, while minimizing its body, and it includes a small stylus that slides right into the phone – no matter which way you put it in this time.

All of this makes it larger and heavier than most of today's phones. But it's a worthy trade-off if you can wrap your meaty paws around its elegantly curved glass and aluminum frame.

Returning features include a microSD card slot for extra storage, absent from last year's Galaxy Note 5, and an IP68 water-resistance rating, normally limited to the S range, which makes this first Note phone that's both waterproof and dustproof to a point.

New in the Note 7 is an iris scanner, Samsung's latest novelty act and your next party trick. You never knew you needed to unlock your phone with your eyes – and, truthfully, you really don't. The fingerprint sensor is still here and works just fine.

This now-launching Android phablet is especially anticipated in the UK and Europe – the S Pen upgrade is long overdue there. Samsung made the bizarre decision not to launch the Note 5 outside of the US and a few other countries.

Skipping over the Samsung Galaxy Note 6 name, the Note 7 is meant to bring it into line with the Galaxy S7 series – and steal the thunder of Apple's iPhone 7and iPhone 7 Plus.

It's certainly among the best phones available right now, big or small. Let's take a look to see if the sizable Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is the right fit for you.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 release date is August 19 in the US and Australia, and September 2 in the UK. Don't worry, it's coming this time. Pre-orders In the UK launch earlier last week, August 16.

In the US, it costs between $33 and $36.67 a month on device payment plans with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint. That's basically the full price spread out over 24 months. Without a contract, it's anywhere from $850 (T-Mobile and Sprint) to $880 (AT&T). Sprint is the only one offering old two-year contracts in exchange for $350 upfront. Samsung is likely to wait four months for a SIM-free unlocked Note 7, just like it did with the S7 Edge.

The Note 7 UK price is simpler, but still expensive at £749. In Australia, it's pricey, too, at AU$1,349. But if you pre-ordered in certain stores, you'd receive a bonus: either a Samsung Gear Fit 2 fitness tracker or a Samsung 256GB microSD card, your choice. Shop around to see if that's still available.

You best like futuristic-looking edge-to-edge displays, because this screen wraps around the left and right sides of the handset with space-age curved glass. No, there's no flat Note 7, grandpa.

It's a lot like the equally-stylish S7 Edge, only this phone has a slightly bigger 5.7-inch display. It comes together in a rich-looking, glass-and-metal-fused design that's going to really wow people who are upgrading from those old, plastic-clad Note 4 and Note 3 handsets. Next to the similarly designed Note 5, it's less breakable, too, thanks to an upgrade to Gorilla Glass 5. It's still heavy compared to Samsung's flagship S series, but it's a tad lighter and noticeably slimmer than the Note 5.

What really makes the Note 7 superior is its gentler dual curved sides. Both the front and the back of the phone slope inward toward its frame, meeting at its metal band apex. The curves aren't as pronounced as the S7 Edge's one big curve, which boldly slopes the front glass all the way to its nearly flat back. But with a more dramatic curve comes more drama in the way of more false touches.

The Note 7 has a larger screen as the S7 Edge to go along with that same color-rich Super AMOLED panel and pixel-dense 2K resolution. It's perfect for the newSamsung Gear VR and also supports Mobile HDR.

Let's be honest, 0.2 inches of additional screen space doesn't make a tremendous difference in a world where the 5.5-inch S7 Edge exists. It's just a hair better for reading a few more words without scrolling, gaming with a smidge more room for on-screen controls without dying, and watching a 12-hour Netflix binge without feeling as badly for not stopping. It's not your fault, it's the immersive screen!

Mobile HDR, on the the hand, allows for darker blacks and brighter whites, and it's more meaningful than any size increase or jumping to a 4K resolution. It'll be up to Netflix, Amazon Prime and other popular services to deliver more content with the expanded contrast ratio. Right now, movies and TV shows with HDR are extremely limited and hard to find (often without proper labels). In the case of Netflix, HDR costs $2 a month on top of your current subscription. So the screen isn't just futuristic-looking, it's future-proof.

Leap Motion wants to bring your hands into virtual reality

Earlier this year Leap Motion announced its ambitions to make controller-free VR a reality, and now it's bringing us one step closer by introducing the software you'll need to bring your hands into virtual space.

The new bit of software is named the Interaction Engine, and it essentially acts as an intermediary translator between the real-world hand movements captured by Leap's motion trackers and the popular gaming Unity Engine. Essentially this new analog-to-digital layer tells virtual objects when and how to react realistically when they've been grasped, pushed or thrown.

Beyond creating a more lifelike simulation, the Interaction Engine can introduce new physics into games, such as the ability to pass your hands through elastic objects and customize throwing physics.

Altogether these features should lead to a more immersive experience than simply pulling the triggers on the HTC Vive controllers to pick up an object. Although there isn't any physical or haptic feedback, Leap Motion argues its method will open the way to subtler interactions in the virtual worlds.

The Interaction Engine is available to download now, and users can add it on as a module for the Unity Engine, which powers virtual reality experiences such as Ghostbusters: Dimension and A Haunting: Witching Hour. It's just one piece of Leap Motion's big plan to create a hardware and software platform built specifically for virtual reality, called Orion.

The Sony Xperia X is a curious phone. It's a handset that's not being dubbed a flagship device, but seems to be packing many of the top-end features you'd expect from such a smartphone.

Sony is pushing the X as having a killer camera with fancy new abilities to track objects in space, with the new technology designed to inspire you to capture more spontaneous images without sacrificing sharpness.

Besides that Sony is still ramming in its other high-end technology, with Hi-Res Audio upscaling and powerful screen technology, all while keeping the price tag down compared to other flagship handsets.

However, the confusing thing here is that we're not sure if this is Sony's flagship phone. That technically doesn't matter – after all, it's what you're thinking of buying right now, and you just want to know how good it is – but if you're a Sony fan there could be something better down the line if the Xperia Z6 pops up any time soon.

So, taking all this into account, what has Sony actually launched here? Is it a phone that's filled with compromises to hit a lower price tag, or is it a triumph of convergence?

Is it the result of a brand that's spent years working out how to bring the very best features to its phones without breaking the bank, just tweaking the design to offer you a phone that lets you do what you need to do without stuffing in overly expensive components for the sake of it?

This phone started off with a SIM-free price tag of £450 in the UK and $549.99 in the US. It's since dropped to around £400 in the UK, but that's still a high price for a phone that doesn't have one of the best processors on the market.

It's starting at around £25 per month on contract for basic amounts of data, which seems to fit the bill for a phone that doesn't have a high-end CPU and lacks features like waterproofing that you can find on the current 'flagship' Sony phone, the Xperia Z5.

The Sony Xperia X launched in May 2016 in the UK, and is now being rolled out worldwide.

Design

New rolled glass sides add an attractive look to the screen

Sony's also going big on design on the Xperia X, curving the glass into the sides of the phone to bring a more smooth and refined appearance to things.

The X still brings the boxy design that's a feature of the Xperia range – that's not to say it's ugly, but it doesn't make the phone stand out as a striking device when you pick it up for the first time.

The 'matte glass' feel to the back is nice, and there's no doubt when you first fondle this handset that it's not a cheap phone. However, the placement of the volume keys below the fingerprint scanner is far from ideal. It means you constantly have to shift the handset around just to change the level of sound you're listening to, and that seems like a weird thing to do.

The power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner, and it's pretty accurate – rarely were we frustrated by it mis-reading our thumb. It's also the natural resting place for a thumb or index finger (depending on whether you're right- or left-handed, resulting in fewer instances where you'll be angrily tapping the button just to get into your own phone.

If you like the way Sony puts its phones together, then you'll like the way the front glass helps the phone fit into the hand, with the lime gold colouring particularly impressive.

However, it's far from the sleekest phone on the market, and Sony highlighting the new design as a big feature shows there's not a lot else to talk about with this latest device.

If you compare this phone to some of the other larger handsets on the market (including the Sony Xperia Z5, which many will want to look at as well given the slight increase in power it offers) it's definitely more palm friendly, with the 5-inch screen fitting nicely within the frame.

In fact it's actually quite irritating that Sony hasn't given the Xperia X a wider screen, as the cheaper and less powerful Xperia XA has an edge to edge display that's really something to look at - it's worth a look if you're into the aesthetics of a phone.

Samsung Galaxy S8: release date and everything you should know

A VR-ready 4K screen is also looking ever more likely, while a dual-lens camera and 'Smart Glow' features are other possible inclusions for the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 was almost everything we hoped for, with improvements throughout leading it to be one of the most powerful, stylish and all round accomplished smartphones on the market.

Samsung Galaxy S8 release date

It's too early to get too specific about release dates, but the Samsung Galaxy S8 is bound to launch in early 2017, since the beginning of the year is typically when Samsung rolls out its new flagships.

The last couple of years the brand has shown off the phone the day before Mobile World Congress starts, with MWC 2017 set to kick off on 27 February... meaning a Galaxy S8 release date of February 26.

In terms of when you'll be able to fondle it for the first time, expect a two week wait - so March 13 is our best guess there.

Samsung Galaxy S8 news and rumors

There's very little Samsung Galaxy S8 news so far, but we can take an educated guess at what we might see.

We've divided our thoughts up into sections below, but likely highlights include a 4K screen, a Snapdragon 830 processor, 6GB of RAM and a massively improved camera.

There's even a chance that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will have an iris scanner or a foldable screen, though they're somewhat less likely.

Samsung Galaxy S8 screen

Samsung is making a big push into VR with its Gear VR headset and one thing it really needs to make the most of that is sharp screens on its phones.

QHD, as we have on the Samsung Galaxy S7, is more than sharp enough for using it as a phone but it's not quite up to scratch for VR, so it's likely Samsung will push the resolution up for the Samsung Galaxy S8, perhaps as high as 4K.

Even without the lure of VR a sharper screen wouldn't be surprising, as a couple of generations of Galaxy devices have now had QHD ones, so Samsung is likely to want to push the resolution up further for the Galaxy S8.

In fact, the company has already shown off a 5.5-inch 2160 x 3840 screen, which comes in at a pin sharp 806 pixels per inch. There's no guarantee the Samsung Galaxy S8 will get this screen, but it's clearly been designed for premium mobile devices and phones don't get much more premium than the S8.

Not only has Samsung developed such a screen, but according to Chinese sources speaking to WCCF Tech, the company specifically plans to equip the Galaxy S8 with a UHD display. They don't specify who the source is though, so take this with a pinch of salt.

Samsung is also putting a lot of work into curved screens, and a recent commentfrom Samsung Mobile President Dong-jin Koh claimed: "Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup."

So that sound like we might not actually get the Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge at all, and the Galaxy S8 will be a single curved variant only.

But it might go one further and give us a foldable phone, especially as prototypes and patents for such a device already exist. In fact, it's rumored that the company will launch a folding phone in 2017, but it's unlikely to risk attaching the untested tech to its flagship.

The screen size could also change. While Samsung won't want to encroach on its Galaxy Note phablet range the 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 is one of the smaller flagships around right now and significantly smaller than even the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge which launched alongside it.

Given that it recently showed off a 5.5-inch 4K display that could be the size the S8 comes in.

There's also the Always On Display (AOD), a feature that debuted with the Galaxy Note 7. This feature has been hugely improved on the new Note, with more pictures added to the mix and a richer display hanging about on the phone when it's turned off.

Future updates to the AOD mean that it should become even richer for the Galaxy S8, with third parties able to add their own widgets to the screen. Samsung recently added a music player onto this area, so it's highly likely third parties like Spotify will be able to do the same thing by February next year.

Samsung Galaxy S8 design

Samsung is on to something with the design of the Galaxy S6 and now the Galaxy S7. Its melding of metal and glass has led to one of the most attractive handsets around, so we don't expect huge changes there.

On the other hand, people like to see changes, so at the very least the design will probably be refined. Samsung slightly curved the back edge of the Galaxy S7, so perhaps it will make the Galaxy S8 even more curved, so it sits even more comfortably in the hand, like the HTC One M9. Or maybe it will focus on making the phone thinner.

And a completely new design is always possible, but if it does have one it could take almost any form. Well, any form that's basically a rectangle anyway.

Samsung Galaxy S8 camera and battery

Samsung is said to be working on a new camera, which will be between 18 and 24MP and have a wide f/1.4 aperture, where the Samsung Galaxy S7 has a narrower f/1.7 one.

That extra width could allow more light in and the jump in megapixel count could allow for more detailed images, though while Samsung is apparently working on this camera it hasn't been specifically linked to the Galaxy S8 yet.

Another rumor, this time from Chinese sources speaking to WCCF Tech, points to a dual-lens camera. It's not clear what role the second lens would play, but the sources claim it's being built by Samsung Motors (Semco).

It's too early to say how accurate this rumor is, but with the Huawei P9, LG G5and possibly the iPhone 7 Plus packing dual cameras it's seemingly the latest trend, so wouldn't be surprising.

There's no word on what size battery the Samsung Galaxy S8 will have, but hopefully the company won't reverse the good work it's done on the S7, which has better life than the S6 before it.

The Galaxy S7 has a 3000mAh juice pack and with any luck the battery in the S8 will be even larger, or at least more efficient. It might need to be if Samsung pushes the screen resolution up.

Samsung Galaxy S8 OS and power

The Snapdragon 830 isn't official yet, but it has been rumored and is the likely name for the next major flagship smartphone chip from Qualcomm. It's likely to be faster, smaller and more efficient than the Snapdragon 820 – or at least those are all areas Qualcomm is likely to try and improve.

That said, Samsung also makes its own Exynos chips and with the Galaxy S7 some regions got those and others got the Snapdragon 820, so the same may happen with the Galaxy S8, but whatever chip it comes with you can be sure it will be cutting edge, as the company usually puts the best tech in its flagships.

That extra power will really come in handy if Samsung plans to put a 4K screen on the Galaxy S8 or use it for high-end VR content.

We can also take a look at Galaxy Note 6 rumors to get some clues about what specs the Samsung Galaxy S8 might be packing. That phone is rumored to be coming with 6GB of RAM and if it does we'd wager the Samsung Galaxy S8 will too. Certainly a boost on the 4GB found in the Samsung Galaxy S7 is likely.

PS4 Slim release date, news and rumors

We might have known about the PlayStation Neo for some time now thanks to a series of leaks as well as a direct confirmation from Sony's Andrew House, but more recently details have emerged about a second new piece of PlayStation hardware, the PS4 Slim.

Whereas the Neo is expected to offer 4K output and more beefy internals, the PS4 Slim is expected to be a much more traditional slim console upgrade like those seen by all previous PlayStations.

We would have previously said that this was shaping up to be a pretty standard console upgrade were it not for the recent arrival of the Xbox One S, a slim version of the Xbox One that adds an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, HDR, and 4K upscaling to the console.

A post-Xbox One S world

But that's not all, a recent analysis performed by the folks at Digital Foundry has shown that the souped up internals of the console lead to some helpful boosts in game framerates.

It's not a massive leap, but in several cases Microsoft's new hardware is much better at keeping to each game's frame-cap than its predecessor.

With the Xbox One S, Microsoft has significantly changed what people will expect from a console's hardware refresh, which raises significant questions about what Sony will pack into its PS4 Slim.

PS4 Slim Appearance

Thanks to a series of images unearthed by NeoGaf, as well as an unboxing video that has since been removed from YouTube, we have a pretty good idea of what the PS4 Slim is going to look like.

The PS4 Slim borrows many design cues such as the slanted front and back from its bigger brother, but the biggest change is its size.

PS4 Slim connectors

The PS4 Slim has most of the same connectors as the standard PS4. It has a power port, accessory port, HDMI out and Ethernet port.

Interestingly the new console forgoes the optical port found on the standard PS4, which is a shame for anyone who relies on this port to provide audio output.

PS4 Slim Controller

The initial leak gave us a good look at the console itself, but it was light on details of the controller. However the YouTube channel ZRZ was able to later post a video which gave us a good look at the controller.

Though the video has since been removed, screenshots of it have been widely circulated online. It appears to have seen a minor change in the form of the addition of a small transparent strip to the front of the controller which allows the existing front-facing light to shine through.

Other than that the controller appears to be more or less the same as the existing models, but we'll be keeping an eye out for any internal changes that Sony has made.

PS4 Slim Release Date

Given that we had heard nor seen anything about the slim PlayStation 4 until recently, we would have previously assumed that a launch this year would have been out of the question.

But what we've seen so far suggests that the console is pretty far along in development. We've seen a working console, and there even appears to be a retail box that people have managed to get their hands on.

Given that the console appears to be essentially ready for store shelves we wouldn't be surprised if it was available to consumers before the end of the year. This is just our guess though, so make sure you take it with a pinch of salt.

PS4 Slim Price

At the moment little is known about the PS4 Slim's price.

Sony's previous slim console versions have each been sold at a reduced price compared to the original console.

After all, as time goes on the various components used to make each console will inevitably come down in price, and Moore's law will allow the various chips to be manufactured more easily and cheaply.

Given that the 500GB of the PS4 currently retails for around $350 / £250 / AU$400, we'd expect the PS4 Slim to at least meet this price.

Conclusion: Lots of questions, relatively few answers

At the time of writing Sony hasn't yet confirmed the existence of the slim console, so we don't yet have any clear idea what form the console will take.

All we know for sure is that a PS4 Slim is coming.

Sony has an event scheduled for September 7 which was previously expected to be the venue for the announcement of the PlayStation Neo, but we wouldn't be surprised if Sony plans to announce the Slim in addition to its beefier 4K brother.

That's the latest user figure from the social network, which released its Q2 earnings report today. As has been the case for many quarters now, Facebook is doing quite well for itself. Numbers continue to go up, it's making more money per user, and it continues to beat analysts expectations, which always makes Wall Street happy.

As if nearing 2 billion monthly active users isn't enough, there are more staggering numbers to gawk at from the company's latest financials, including what's going on with Instagram and WhatsApp:

1.1 billion daily active users on Facebook, up 17% from the same time last year

Over 1 billion people accessed Facebook on mobile last month, up 22% from the same time last year

Double-digit percentage growth in time spent on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger compared to the same time last year

$6.4 billion in revenue, up 59% year-over-year

Over 60 million monthly active business Pages

4 million 360 photos were shared on Facebook

2 billion searches are conducted on Facebook every day

More than 500 million monthly active users on Instagram, with more than 300 million daily users

More than 1 billion people on both Messenger and WhatsApp

Its user growth in regions where it's available will stagnant, but the fact that Facebook is growing how much it makes per user, increasing ad revenue (mobile ad revenue was up 81% year-over-year) and is already thinking about how it can get more users - namely, by bringing the internet to more people - is a tremendous sign for its future.

Is Facebook truly unstoppable? There are no guarantees in life, but it will take a lot to knock the company off its game.

Video times

So, what's the secret to Facebook's success? While smart execution of its core products is no doubt a factor in Facebook's continued growth, video is now the major driver for the social network, and its No. 1 priority moving forward.

"We're particularly pleased with our progress in video as we move towards a world where video is at the heart of all our services," CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the company's earnings release. He backed that up on a call with analysts, saying the "big theme" Facebook's working to execute is "to become video first."

Zuckerberg said that on mobile, users have a number of apps and services to choose from, including YouTube, live.ly, musical.ly, and Snapchat, and each offers different levels of video sharing, from 1-on-1 private conversations to fully public that meet different needs.

It's a tough landscape, but Zuckerberg indicated the company will focus on video production as one way to gain a leg up on competitors. It just made its Surround 360 degree camera open source, so expect more devices, tools and services centered around video from Facebook over time.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 could launch with a new Gear VR

Yesterday a huge chunk of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 information leaked out and today even more has arrived, this time joined by press photos, along with details about the new Gear VR.

The information was shared on Nowhereelse.fr by reputable leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka @OnLeaks, so as sources go this is a good one.

He claims to be able to "confirm" that the Note 7 will have a similar design to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, with a metal frame and glass back, as you can see in the press render, and that it's IP68 certified dust and water resistant.

Nothing particularly new there, but he goes on to say that it's 153.5 x 73.9 x 7.9mm and 168g, which is new information. That makes it ever so slightly thicker but lighter than the 153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6mm and 171g Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

The specs apparently include a curved 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED screen, a 2.3GHz octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, Android 6.0, a 12MP rear camera with optical image stabilisation, a 5MP front-facing camera, a USB-C port, both fingerprint and iris scanners, a 3500mAh battery and 64GB of storage, plus a microSD card slot.

Familiar specs but a new headset

While the processor isn't named the specs suggest it's the same Exynos 8890 chip as used in the Galaxy S7 in some regions, though it's possible that as with that phone the US will get a Snapdragon chip instead.

Otherwise the specs are largely the same as we've heard before, though that 3500mAh battery is worth highlighting as that's smaller than even the Galaxy S7 Edge's 3600mAh juice pack. Though it's significantly larger than the Note 5's 3000mAh battery, so it may still have a decent amount of life.

The S Pen's pressure level has apparently been doubled from 2048 on the Note 5 to 4096 here and it's said to have a latency time of less than 50ms, all of which should bring it one step closer to feeling like a real pen.

The leak also details the new Gear VR, which is apparently 207 x 122 x 98.5mm and 300g, making it a little lighter than the current 318g Gear VR. The field of view has also apparently been increased to 110 degrees from 96 degrees and it uses USB-C as expected.

That new Gear VR is supposedly going on sale next month, but according to the leak you won't be able to buy the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 until September, at least in France, where it will apparently retail for around 850 euros (roughly £715/US$945/AU$1258).

Sony has revealed how much space will be required to use PS VR, while a premature blog post has announced that Driveclub VR will be a launch title in Japan.

The parameters for using PlayStation VR can be seen on the PlayStation Asia site, recommending that the PlayStation Camera is given a play area of 3m (9.8 feet) by 1.9m (6.2 feet) - so about 60 square feet of space in total.

"Limit your use of PS VR to within the Play Area," it reads. "Clear an area larger than the Play Area of all obstacles before using PS VR and remain seated whenever possible.

"If the application requires you to stand while wearing the VR headset, follow the application instructions carefully, and maintain awareness of your surroundings."

Sony also states that the height of the play area "depends on the range captured by the camera".

It's a bit surprising to see Sony setting these space requirements on PS VR, despite all of our demos so far requiring little movement (and most involving us being sat in a chair).

In fact, the HTC Vive requires a minimum space of 5ft by 6.5ft, but it's recommended you use a bigger area.

But safety is going to be a key concern with VR, so Sony could just be being overly cautious here. Don't sell your sofa just yet.

Space oddity

In other PS VR news, a post from PlayStation Japan- now pulled - announced that Driveclub VR, the virtual reality adaptation of the existing PS4 game, will be a launch title for PlayStation VR on October 13.

It's not clear if this will apply to Japan only. Sony told us in a statement: "We have nothing to announce with regard to Driveclub VR at this time".

The post was followed up by a tweet from Driveclub director Paul Rustchynsky, who confirmed that the VR version of the game will come with a "collection of brand new tracks", however he didn't say anything on release date.

When Driveclub developer Evolution Studios was shuttered by Sony earlier this year, many of the team were snapped up by Codemasters, leaving the development of the VR adaptation a bit of a mystery.

We knew it was still happening, but it's unclear how many of the original team have been involved.

Samsung Gear S3 tipped for September with the S2's best feature

There was never much doubt that Samsung would make a Gear S3, after all, the Samsung Gear S2 is one of the best smartwatches around. But we now have a good idea of when the Gear S3 is actually coming and the wait is almost over.

According to SamMobile, the wearable will land during IFA 2016, which takes place from September 2-7. That lines up with previous rumors, so it seems likely, especially as Samsung is bringing the launch of the Galaxy Note 7 forward to August, leaving it with an IFA-shaped hole where it can show off the Gear S3.

But that's not all we've heard, as the same source claims that the Gear S3 will have a rotary bezel, which means you can expect the face to be circular, as with its predecessor, and for the bezel to rotate, giving you an intuitive way to scroll through menus.

Time to get excited

The rotating bezel was one of the best features of the Samsung Gear S2, so it's great news that it's tipped to return here.

Hopefully some things will change though. We'd like to see more customization options this year for a start, and the option to use it with any Androidsmartphone.

But the Samsung Gear S3 is worth getting excited about if you're looking for your next wearable. The Gear S2 is already sitting at the top of our best smartwatches list and along with the upcoming Apple Watch 2 the S3 could easily be one of the wearable highlights of the year.

It's safe to say at this point that the Surface Pro 4 launched to some length of controversy. Between the major glitches and massive rollout of firmware updates required to fix said complications, it's no surprise that the Surface Pro 3 is outselling the Skylake-powered 2-in-1, according to PCWorld, at a 10:1 ratio.

The Surface Pro 3 still works like a charm, and its sales numbers reflect this. In fact, it's still the best-selling Surface device on the market even if the Surface Pro 4 is finally beginning to creep its way up. Still, it's not without its fair share of faults.

Ever since its initial release, for instance, the Surface Pro 3 has been plagued with a shorter than expected battery life to the remorse of its users. Recently, however, Microsoft has traced that problem back to a software defect, which will be addressed in an upcoming firmware update.

In other OS news, if you're eager to get your hands on the major Windows 10 Anniversary Update, you may be waiting longer than expected. In classic Microsoft fashion, the first 'Redstone' overhaul is undergoing a phased rolloutbeginning on August 2.

Knock it for the Windows 8 launch. Lay into it for how it debuted the Xbox One. But, when it comes to its latest product, the Surface Pro 3, don't pull out the torches and pitchforks just yet – Microsoft is onto something here.

Over the past few years, the Redmond, Wash. Windows maker has proved to be one of the bolder technology companies, for better or worse. Microsoft clearly isn't scared of falling on its face in the hope of landing on what in the world tech users want next in this turbulent industry, and the Surface Pro 3 is – well, it just might be an exception.

The company has hammered away at what it considers is a problem with tablets for years. Since the launch of the Surface Pro, Microsoft has sought after the ultimate mobile computing device, one that could usurp the laptop with a tablet-first approach.

All five versions of the Surface Pro 3 are available now in the US, UK and Australia. They are: 64GB / Intel Core i3 ($799); 128GB / Core i3 ($899); 128GB / Core i5 ($999), 256GB / Core-i5 ($1,299), 256GB / Core i7 ($1,549) and 512GB / Core i7 ($1,949).

It's also available in many more countries, including 25 new markets for the first time.

The Surface Pro 3 is closer than Microsoft has ever been to making good on its mobile computing vision. After over a week with the slate, I'd go so far as to say that the Pro 3 is closer than any laptop-tablet hybrid released yet.

Microsoft was so sure of itself that not only did it directly compare the Pro 3 to Apple's iPad Air and 13-inch MacBook Air, it gave members of the press pre-release Surface Pro 3 units during an announcement event in New York. Sure, the units have bugs as of this review, but who cares?

"I forced the giving away of the device, just so you're aware," Surface team lead Panos Panay told me just after the reveal. "I said, 'You know what? I want the product in people's hands.' 'But the bugs are still there. They're not all done until June 20, until it's on market.' I don't care. The purity of the device is still true, and on June 20 there will be more drops."

One look at the thing might explain Panay's eagerness to get the Surface Pro 3. It's no iPad Air, that's for sure, but the iPad Air isn't packing a 12-inch display.

Design

Yes, Microsoft bumped the Surface Pro touchscreen from a tiny 10.6 inches to a far roomier 12 inches. In the process, the pixel count has been upped from 1920 x 1080 to 2160 x 1440 The result is a modest boost in pixels per inch – 207 ppi to 216 ppi – given the increase in screen real estate.

More important is Microsoft's interesting choice in aspect ratio. Rather than sticking with the Pro 2's 16:9 or glomming onto the iPad's 4:3, the firm went with a 3:2 aspect ratio. The company claims that, with this aspect ratio, this 12-inch screen can actually display more content than the MacBook Air's 13.3-inch panel at 16:10. The move was also made to make the tablet feel more like your average notepad when held in portrait orientation.

Wrapped in a bright, silver-colored magnesium shell that's cool and smooth to the touch, the Surface Pro 3 feels premium in every regard. The tablet keeps the trapezoidal shape of its predecessors, but manages to come in both thinner and lighter than before. Plus, the tablet's upper half is beset by vents on its edges to better dissipate heat pushed out by its fan.

Microsoft also moved the Windows home button to the device's left side of its silky smooth – though, rather thick – glass bezel. This way, it appears on the bottom of the slate while held upright, calling out, 'Hey, hold it this way now.' While it's no doubt the lightest Surface Pro yet, I'm not sure whether I could hold onto it for an entire subway ride home.

Adorning both sides of the Pro 3 are 5MP cameras capable of 1080p video recording. While stills on either shooter won't blow you away, the front-facing lens should do just fine for Skype and the weekly video meeting over VPN.

This Surface isn't without its sidekick(s)

A tablet wouldn't be much of a laptop replacement without a keyboard, and the Surface Pro keyboard was in desperate need of a boost. Luckily, Microsoft sent the Type Cover back to the drawing board, and what came back is the best version yet. From keys with deeper travel and stronger feedback to a wider glass trackpad that actually clicks, nothing was off the table.

But the most important improvement is the brand new double hinge. Equipped with a strong magnet that latches onto the Pro 3's lower bezel, the Type Cover can now rest with just a portion of it touching your lap or desk. This proved to make writing on my lap much more stable than with previous Surface devices. (Plus, the plush cover comes in five colors: red, blue, cyan, black and purple.)

Tucked beside the Type Cover is also the newly improved Surface Pen. Microsoft made a point of calling its stylus that, because the firm wants it to be seen as and feel like the writing instrument we've all grown up with. With an aluminum finish and a useful clicker up top, the Surface Pen is weighted to better feel like a pen. Using Bluetooth and powered by N-trig, the stylus tracks closer to its physical position than ever before, thanks to some major improvements to the Surface screen.

The new Surface Pro 3 unarguably has the look and feel of a premium product, so it only deserves to be stacked up against the most luxuriously built tablet and laptop around.

Adobe launched major updates to two of its classic design applications in March. Called Touch Workspace, the apps are available now free of charge to existing Creative Cloud subscribers and Surface Pro 3 owners with the latest versions of Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 and Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 installed. The apps feature a streamlined design user interface that makes it more responsive to fingertips, while optimizing a number of new or existing software tools with touch interaction in mind.

But it is US mobile giant Verizon that has upstaged us all.

No, it hasn't been up to the attic to find its collection of Beanie Babies or a Panini Euro 96 sticker album - it has instead spent $4.8bn buying doyen of 1990s internet: Yahoo.

Faded Memories

Founded in 1995, Yahoo quickly became the starting page for a generation of internet users in an era before Google. It was a portal, with search behaving more like the Dewey Decimal System in a library than as the algorithm-powered behemoth that we think of today.

And the company expanded, offering a wide range of services including email, message boards and even the ability to build your own websites. In 1999, Yahoo acquired Geocities, which enabled anyone with no sense of taste or design to create violently ugly webpages - no coding skills required.

But then Google happened, and poor Yahoo was never quite the same. The problem was that Google's superior search powers essentially destroyed Yahoo's core business - to the point where in 2000, the company actually licensed Google to provide the search engine on the Yahoo homepage.

Since, Yahoo has pretty much been defined by the fact it is struggling. Viewed as a series of revolutions, Yahoo missed the search revolution, it missed the social media revolution, it missed the video revolution and perhaps most importantly, it missed the mobile revolution.

"Yahoo!" was probably the last thing that investors wanted to shout when they got their quarterly earnings report.

The International Picture

So how has Yahoo stayed afloat? It appears that largely this can be attributed to its success in China and Japan. In 1996, the company launched a joint venture with Japanese firm Softbank (yep, the company that recently bought ARM in the UK). This was wildly successful - and is still the most popular website in Japan.

In 2005, the company invested $1bn into Chinese retailer Alibaba. While the company has no presence in the west it is in fact the world's largest retailer (yes, even bigger than Amazon) - it offers Chinese consumers a service that combines the functions of Amazon, eBay and Paypal.

Earlier this year it was revealed that, effectively, Yahoo's core business (the thing it is selling today) is worthless - and the only reason that investors kept their money in the company was because of Yahoo's stake in China.

With the sale to Verizon, the company we currently know as Yahoo will effectively become a holding company - an empty shell - through which investors will hold their share of both Yahoo Japan and Alibaba.

Innovation

You have to feel sorry for Yahoo though. It isn't like the company hasn't been trying.

Like many of its competitors, over the last 22 years Yahoo has continued to hoover up smaller technology firms and invest in new ideas in search of smarter technologies and a runaway hit. And to be fair to Yahoo, it has had lots of interesting ideas.

For example, back in 2008 when phones were only just starting to get smart, Yahoo engineers came up with a service called FireEagle, which would share your location data with all of the web services you use - so they'd always know where you are.

In the pre-app era, it invented a Facebook desktop app called "Friends on Fire", which used the Fire Eagle service for location sharing with friends. Unlucky for Yahoo, this emerged just as mobile apps became a thing - negating the need for such a service as we all suddenly had GPS in our pockets.

Similarly, Yahoo Pipes was an innovative solution to a potentially tricky technical problem. Around the same time that RSS feeds were a popular way of sharing content, Pipes would let users manipulate feeds using a number of visual tools, with no need to code.

For example, you could take an RSS news feed and have Pipes remove any items that were not about, say, little known Senator Barack Obama (whatever happened to him?) - so you'd have a customised feed. Again, unfortunately for Yahoo this was just as Twitter was taking off, providing a much easier way to track websites than messing with RSS.

These are just two examples of many of bets that Yahoo has made, which in the end haven't paid off.

In terms of bigger acquisitions things are a little better. In 2005 Yahoo bought photo sharing site Flickr for just $35m - and it is still going strong today. And in 2013 the company bought itself some social media cred by picking up Tumblr for a significantly more pricey $1.1bn.

The latter purchase was a year into the tenure of current CEO Marissa Meyer, a former Google executive who was hired to turn the company around. Despite her hard work, the only real noticeable change other than the Tumblr purchase appears to be a logo that infuriates typography nerds.

But until now, everything else has continued chugging along - including Mail, Yahoo News and various other services. In fact, for all its troubles according to ranking site Alexa, Yahoo is still the 5th most highly visited site worldwide.

Given this, it is an obvious question: Why did Verizon decide to buy Yahoo? What does Verizon want to do with a company that appears to be past its best? From Verizon's perspective, Yahoo starts to look a whole lot tastier.

Connecting with Verizon

Verizon is a telecoms company. It sells mobile connectivity and fixed line connections - but these are effectively dumb pipes.

The fight over net neutrality notwithstanding, once you have a Verizon internet connection, despite all of the money changing hands to show you adverts or sell you stuff, it doesn't get a share. If it only relies on your broadband subscription, then there is a limit to how much Verizon can earn. And this is why it has been investing in content.

Last year Verizon bought another stalwart of the web's stoneage: AOL, for $4.4bn. AOL has long ceased to be an ISP - instead, it is a content company that has the likes of the Huffington Post and TechCrunch under its umbrella. Heck, it has even produced full TV shows for online.

So combine this with what Yahoo has to offer and suddenly Verizon has a tasty piece of web real estate, with all of the eyeballs that implies. And the combined company should prove attractive for advertisers too.

While together the two companies still only control a small proportion of the online advertising market compared to Google and Facebook, together they will make it easier for people who want to sell you things, because they will be able to offer greater scalability to advertisers. Which means more money for Verizon.

Since the acquisition was announced there has also been speculation that the underlying technologies driving the advertising in both companies could also be combined to create more sophisticated tools. This could mean adverts are better targeted thanks to a richer pool of data - and will result in a higher click-through rate. Which are exactly the things that advertisers want.

Leaked documentation of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 appears to point out some limitations of its rumored iris scanner. Plus, the phone may come in a gold shade and almost certainly has a 12MP camera, but may not actually have as big a battery or as much RAM as we had hoped.

Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy Note 7's S Pen could work underwater and we've seen clear shots of the front, back and bottom edge of the phone, as well as a video. The possibility of a flat version has popped up again too. Here's the latest Note 7 news.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is the large-screen phone for 2016 that Android power users have been waiting to upgrade to, and its release date is almost here.

Sure, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge stretched out fingertips into phablet territory too, with a 5.5-inch display earlier this year. But it didn't have two Note series staples: a 5.7-inch screen and an S-Pen stylus.

Note 7 rumors point to a phone that maximizes the screen space, while minimizing the body and bezels. Returning features like a microSD card are welcome and the unconfirmed iris scanner will turn heads.

It's especially anticipated in the UK and Europe, as Samsung made the bizarre decision not to launch the Galaxy Note 5 outside of the US and a few other countries. Their S-Pen upgrade is long overdue.

Just don't expect it to be called the Samsung Galaxy Note 6. All recent rumors indicate that Galaxy Note 7 is the name of the next phablet. It's thought the company wants to bring it in line with the name of the Galaxy S7 series - and the forthcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 release date

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 release date is Tuesday, August 2, according to every rumor out there and, as of this month, a Samsung Unpacked invite. We got one and will be there in both New York and London.

The official announcement will happen at 11am EDT. That means you can expect all of the Note 7 news to start at 8am PDT, 4pm GMT (or 1am the next day, on August 3 AEST).

The August 2 launch event is a little under two weeks earlier in the year than the Galaxy Note 5 announcement. But it's what we've suspected for several months now. A Korean news source believes production to be starting in July - so an August announcement made sense.

Samsung typically launches its Galaxy Note flagships during IFA, which is happening in early September this year, so that's the only other possible launch date, but It may have its hands (or wrists) full with other announcements, like the Samsung Gear S3

Before we get into the design, let's talk about the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 colors. It may come in three hues, according to an early July leak that made the new Android phone look especially convincing.

Options include Black Onyx, Silver Titanium and, the highlight of the bunch, Blue Coral. However, we've since seen another leak, showing the Note 7 off in a gold shade, so we may get four colors at launch.

It's also possible that Samsung will add additional colors to the mix after the initial sales rush, to revive interest in the phone.

Techradar's take: Samsung limited the Note 5 in the US to three colors: Black Sapphire and White Pearl at launch and, eventually, Gold Platinum. However, there was a Silver Titanium color too, but it didn't launch in the States. So it's not clear whether all four of these colors will launch in all locations or not.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 design is poised to be more than just a bigger, S-Pen-included version of the Samsung Galaxy S7. In fact, there may be no flat version of the phablet at all, although a question mark remains on the Edge-only Note 7 rumor.

We're hearing a few other rumblings about the design of the Galaxy Note 7 too. Rumblings like the possibility that it will be waterproof and dust-resistant. AWeibo post echoes those claims, saying it will be IP68 certified. That's one rumor that seems likely, given that the Samsung Galaxy S7 is.

TechRadar's take: It would make sense for Samsung to stick with the popular Galaxy S7 Edge design for the Note 7 and that included waterproofing, so expect to get that here too.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 screen is said to be large and curvy, with a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, according to phone leaks expert Evan Blass. That's our best guess, too.

Sure, it could get a tad larger. Word from both Weibo and GSM Helpdesk points to a 5.8-inch screen at the same 1440 x 2560 resolution, with the latter also claiming the display might be curved.

We also heard similar rumors from another Weibo post, which claimed the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will have a 5.8-inch screen in both curved and flat varieties. In fact it could be bigger still, as a listing on Indian import site Zaubaputs it at 6 inches.

That seems like a literal stretch, but one thing is certain: Everything we're seeing says it'll be big.

It's also going to fill that screen space with at least a QHD resolution, given that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 uses a Quad HD display already.

But our money is on a 5.7-inch screen in the end. After all, the Samsung Gear VR might not be able to fit anything bigger, unless Samsung is shaving off .2 inches from the already-thin Note 5 inner bezel.
