I love that now Peeps have a design for every holiday. I wanted to share with you a recipe that I ran across the other day for gift giving. I have used a picture from another site to show you the Halloween peeps but keep in mind, you can use any peeps and make the gift for any season.
Smores in a Jar.

This is a recipe that gives you the taste of smores but in bar form. This gift would be great for teachers, neighbors, coaches, friends or anyone that has a sweet tooth. I am going to make these for my small group at church. I can't wait to share.

You will need:

1 quart size canning jar with lid and ring

1 sleeve of graham crackers (10 crackers)

8 marshmallow Peeps (don't tear apart, it is easier to line them around the jar if still together.)

1/3 c. brown sugar

1 1/4 c chocolate chips, seasonal m&m's or other choclate candies

ribbon and fabric to decorate.

Putting it together......

Crush the graham crackers into fine pieces.
Pour about 2/3 of the graham crackers into the bottom of the jar and press it down.
Place the 8 peeps around the inside of the jar. Use a wooden spoon to press them up against the glass. (but don't squish them)
Pour the rest of the graham crackers into the middle of the peeps. This will help hold the peeps in place.
Pour 1/3 c of brown sugar into the center of the ring of peeps and pack it down.
Fill the rest of the jar with the 1 1/4 c of candy. Try to pack it down with out squishing the peeps.

For the tag, write these instructions;

Empty the contents of the jar into a large bowl. Cut the peeps into pieces and miss all the ingredients well. Add 1/2 c melted butter and 1 tsp vanilla to the dry ingredients. Mix well.

Spoon into a greased 8X8 baking pan and pat down lightly. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Cool pan on a cooling rack and then cut into bars.

The first time we took our children to Disney, our son was in love with Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. That was all he talked about before we got to Disney. We did a breakfast one morning with the Disney characters and Chip and Dale was some of the characters that were there. Ryne and Jordan both enjoyed seeing Mickey, Minnie, Goofey and others come by the table and greet and also play with them. But when Chip and Dale came by Ryne went totally shy. It was funny how he became shy. It didn't take long for Chip and Dale to bring Ryne out of his shell and then for the rest of the day, all we heard was how Chip and Dale did this, did that and how he loved Chip and Dale.

You can make that special character even more special for you child. Disney has a fan club that you can write to and tell them what your child's favorite character is and they will send you back a signed photo of that character. This is so cool!

Big Tax Credits for Going Green

Are you aware that you will get some tax credits if you did a few home improvements around the house to make your home a little greener? At energystarI have learned of that you can get a 30% tax credit up to $1500 on products that help save energy.

Such as Exterior doors, Roofs that are metal or asphalt, Insulation, Central air conditioner and air source heat pumps, Water heaters and natual gas furnace.

The tax credit is $1500 total, so if you do more than one of these upgrades, you can only get $1500 for all the products combined. But $1500 is still a big break.

If you are considering upgrading to be more energy efficient, you might consider doing it soon while this option is still available.

Kelloggs Cinnabon Bars, do they really taste like Cinnabon?

I bought a box of Kelloggs Cinnabon Bars last week. I was very intriged by the thoughts of having the taste Cinnabon at my beck & call for breakfast. We have a Cinnabon shop in one of our malls but it is 1/2 way across town so I don't get to go very often.

When I opened the box and the wrapper, I could smell what smelled about like if I was standing counter of Cinnabon. The pastry is soft. The bar is about 1 1/2 inches wide.

When, I tasted the bar, it tasted good but the smell is better than the taste. I think Kelloggs has done a good job trying to bring that wonderful taste of a cinnabon into a bar but I don't think you can ever reproduce the warm, smooth, creamy cinnamon roll from Cinnabon.

Pumpkin Carving Sunday! coming soon to the McMullen home

Our small family has very few holiday traditions but this is one that we started a while back and it has become a fun tradition. We have a pumpkin carving Sunday. We have several to come over and join us for this event. I have a basket of pumpkin carving supplies that I just purchased at the $1 store or bought after halloween and I just keep them for year after year use. It is a BYOP party (bring your own pumpkin) so we have pumpkin of all shapes and sizes. Some are very detailed and some are just the traditional smiley face.

Why am I tell you all about this? Well, for my family, this fun afternoon cost around $20 but it is full of great memories and fun. I think a memory is well worth $20. Plus, we take all the pumpkin seeds from all the pumpkins and roast them for a great nutritional snack that is expensive to buy. I will roast the seeds in the oven and then bag them up and give them to the carvers that attended the pumpkin carving party.

Everyone has a great time. They leave with a cute carved pumpkin and a memory of laughter. I highly encourage you enjoying the fall with your family and friends. Take a small decorating task and turn it into a family event and share with your friends.

Theatre Communication Group's Free Night of Theatre program is celebrating its 5th anniversary and returns to 120 theatres across the country on October 15, 2009. Last fall, 650 theatre companies opened their doors to over 65,000 new theater goers. I have done one focus group in the past 3 months and loved it. It was easy money but it also was very enjoyable and I felt like I was contributing to product development that I was being asked about. After participating in this group, I have been seeking out more focus groups to work with.

Thanks to imommies, I have ran across this opportunity that I want to share with you.

Schlesinger Associates and The Research House is doing a focus group on Immunizations. They are looking for individuals between the ages of 25 - 60 yrs of age to participate in a phone interview that will last around 1 hour. The interview will be about immunizations. If you qualify you will paid an honorarium of $300. The interview will take place between Setpember 14 - October 2nd.

All you have to do is fill out this prequalification survey and they will contact you if you qualify for the focus group. The survey only takes a couple of minutes to do, so I think it is well worth my time.

I wanted to share with you some exciting changes coming to this blog. We are going to step to the next level and to a self hosted website! I am so excited. I have been wanted to do this for a while but just afraid to take the leap. BUT the other week, I won a years worth of hosting wtih Mom Webs through a contest that Jendi's journal was doing. So that confirmed to me I needed to take the leap and do it.

Make your own laundry detergent for a fraction of the cost of regular detergent

You have heard me talk about my friend Beth before on this blog. Beth is a mom to 4 boys and I am sure always has a load of laundry going. She shared with me a few weeks ago about a laundry detergent that she had made and is using it. She has always been a Tide girl and she said this is as good as her Tide.

She shared with me the recipe for the detergent that is in liquid form. I ran out and bought all the stuff to do the detergent and then it sat in the laundry room for 2 months. :) (sorry Beth)

But I have now tried it and I love it. Beth and I used the same ingredients but I kept my detergent in powder form and she made hers liquid. I kept mine in powder form because of space.

Today I want to share with the quick methods of making your detergent at home. I will also post the liquid method tomorrow. Here is what you need.....

1 bar of Fels Naptha soap. This can be found in the laundry section of your store or maybe in the bathing soap section if the stock boy didn't know what it was :) If you can not find this soap, Ivory soap or another natural lye soap works fine.

Borax This can be found in the laundry section of your store.

Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. Don't confuse this with baking soda. It is two different products. This can also be found in your laundry section.

Putting it together.

I use a food processor for this but if you need to hand grate, just grate soap fine over a large bowl.

Grate 1 bar of soap. If using a food processor, cut the soap into chunks and put in food processor and add the remaining ingredients as follows.

1/2 Cup Borax

1/2 Cup Washing Soda

Mix together completely. If you are using the food processor, mix until the soap chunks are fine.

Get a container that has a lid that seals and place your detergent in it. The measurment that you use is 1 tablespoon for one load of laundry. I just keep a measuring spoon in my container for easy use. Be sure to write the measurment on the container to where others can help you with the laundry.

From my calculations, this way of doing laundry cost about 7 cents per load. My old method of doing laundry cost 21 cents per load. Wow a savings of 14 cents per load. That might not sound like much but you are cutting your laundry cost by 2/3 by doing it this way.

I like this detergent. It has no smell to it. If you want a fragrance, then I would suggest buying a soap that has fragrance and maybe doing 1/2 of the Nels Naptha and 1/2 the fragrance soap and then adjust if needed. Our clothes are coming out clean and stains are not being left in the fabric.

Thanks Beth for opening my eyes to this way of saving money and also going a little greener because I am not using all those plastic bottles and throwing them away.

Smells of Fall with Rachael Ray recipes

Who else can say that Fall is their favorite season? I love fall. I love the smell of fall, the feel of fall, the activities that happen in the fall and the food that comes along with cool weather.
In this month’s edition of Everyday With Rachael Ray , there is a recipe for Philly Cheese Steak stuffed garlic bread. I wanted to share it with you. If you don’t get the magazine Everyday with Rachael Ray, I highly suggest you starting to pick it up or subscribe here. It is one of my favorites!
This recipe serves 4 and can with prep and cooking time it will take about 45 mins.

One 1 pound loaf of peasant bread
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary
1 pound onions, thinly sliced
1 pound sirloin steak or sirloin tips, very thinly sliced
salt and pepper
¼ cup dry red wine (I will omit this due to not having it on hand)
8 slices of provolone cheese.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Slice off the top ½ inch of the bread and save.
Scoop out the insides of the loaf, leaving a ½ inch think shell. (cut the scooped bread into cubes)
In a large skillet heat 6 tablespoons of Olive Oil over med heat. Stir in garlic and rosemary for 2 minutes.
Place the bread shell on a baking sheet and brush the inside with some of the seasoned oil. Add 3 cups bread crumb cubes to the skillet with the remaining seasoned oil and coat the bread cubes. Transfer to the baking sheet and surround the bread bowl shell. Place the bread top on the baking sheet also cut side up. Bake until browned and toasted (10 – 15 mins)
In the skillet heat the 2 remaining tablespoons of olive oil over med heat and add the onions and cook. Stir until golden (10 mins) transfer to a bowl. Add the steak to the skillet and cook for 4 minutes, season with salt and pepper. Add the wine if you would like and cook for 2 more minutes. Stir in the onions.
Spoon ½ the steak onion mixture into the bread bowl and top with ½ of the cheese then ½ of the croutons. Layer the other ½ of the steak mixture, then the croutons and finish on the top with more cheese.
Bake until the cheese has melted.
Top with the bread lid.
To serve, slice the bowl into wedges.

Kellogg's Pop Tarts Blueberry Muffin - New Flavor Review

I received in the mail this week a sample of the new Blueberry Muffin Pop tart. I am not one that eats a lot of pop tarts but I do love blueberry muffins so this one intrigued me. I opened up the package and I could smell a blueberry muffin. I have always bought the brown sugar and cinnamon pop tarts for my husband and daughter which don’t have a strong smell, so I was surprised at the smell of the blueberries. The top of the pop tart has the white frosting with sprinkles of blue granules and brown granules. I think the brown is to represent the crumbles from the muffin. When I broke open the pop tart it has white cream filling with blueberry cream mixed with in. The taste is good. I think the smell is more like a blueberry muffin than the taste but the taste is not bad.

I would not buy these just for me but if my family liked fruity pop tarts I would buy a box for them to try. The only huge negative I that see with this pop tart flavor is it has 11 grams of fat and 71 grams of carbs for two pop tarts. Kellogg’s pop tarts does offer low fat pop tarts in other flavors but I am not sure if the blueberry muffin flavor is yet offered as a low fat selection.

Baking Soda.... wow 20 different uses.

A small box of baking soda cost 62 cents at my local grocery store. I was amazed at the uses that baking soda has and it cost so little. All You magazine gave a great list of 20 uses that you can use Baking Soda for . I want to share them with you.

Baking soda will put out a grease fire. Just scatter over the flames.

Put an open box of baking soda in your frig and freezer to absorb odors. (last for 2 months.)

Clean the dishwasher and coffeemaker by running an empty cycle with baking soda.

Add 1/2 cup baking soda to your bath for an at home spa treatment.

Polish jewelry with a paste made from water and baking soda.

Scatter baking soda in the kitty box, then spread kitty litter on top.

Sun burn relief or bug bites. Make a paste and put on the effective areas.

Add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to 3 eggs for a fluffier eggs.

1 cup baking soda poured in kitchen drain and followed with 1 cup of hot vinegar to quickly unclog a kitchen drain.

Have trouble with dandruff? Stop using the shampoo for a few weeks and start using baking soda and massage into your wet scalp and hair. Use a handful.

Gargle with baking soda just like mouthwash.

Soak toothbruses in a mixture of 1/4 cup water. soak overnight.

Make kitty litter. 1 small box and 3 inches of sandy clay.

Brush your pet's teeth with baking soda.

Melts icy sidewalks.

Discourage weeds by sprinkling baking soda into the cracks on your driveway and walkways.

Surround your dog's good bowl with baking soda to keep pests away.

Sprinkle baking soda on the sink and tub, and scrub with a sponge.

Have heartburn? Create an antacid by mixing 1/2 tsp. of baking soda with 1/2 c water.

To clean a toilet, add 1/4 cup baking soda to the bowl, swirl and scrub.

Can you believe you can do this much with that little box of soda? This will cut down on your cleaning supplies bill.

September 9th Good Neighbor Day

I believe there is a day for everything now. I had not heard of Good Neighbor Day until I saw this promotion from FTD. Once I saw what they were promoting, I changed my sarcastic thought and realized that this is something good and I wanted to participate in it also.

FTD is celebrating Good Neighbor Day by giving floral bouquets in select location for free. The thought is to keep one stem and then give the other stems of flowers to your neighbors to brighten their day.

You can click on the flowers to see if there is a florist in your area that is participating. There is not one near me but I see some in several locations that I know you as readers live. So get you a bouquet of flower on that day and share some joy to your neighbors.

WD-40 Is it a wonder in a can?

I ran across a list of 2000 + uses for WD-40. I was amazed at what all this can of what I thought was just "squeak remover" oil does. After reading through this list, I went out to the garage and dusted off the cobwebs from the can and moved it into the kitchen for easy access. Let me share a few with you.

Removes Crayon from screen doors, plastic tables & the carpet.

Removes sticker residue from clothes.

Cleans the piano keys

Polishes silver jewelry

If you get stung, put a dot of WD-40 on sting and it won't hurt.

Drives moisture from electrical parts.

Removes splattered grease on the stove.

Removes marker pen from glass objects.

Removes tree sap

Keeps zippers on outdoor items from sticking from weather.

Keeps snow from sticking to doors and satellite dishes.

Takes handprints off stainless steel and helps keep them off.

Cleans volleyballs & golfballs

Prevents rust on golf shoe spikes.

Ever get stuck in a sleeping bag because of the zipper..... yes, WD -40 will fix the zipper. ( i don't think this helps if the fabric is the problem in the zipper :) )

Sorry for this post being later than expected. Many events this weekend kept me from doing my blogging.

Today I am going to share with you some opportunities to work from home by doing some Editing and also Online Juror. Let's start wtih editing.

Editing
CyberEdit, Inc. They offer educated editing, writing services and also resume writing. This is done on a freelance basis but it ranges from $15- $40 a hour. Click on Peterson's resume Edge and then on the bottom of the page, click on jobs (in small letters)

Edit Fast: You would do editing, proof reading and writing. This is also freelance. The editor gets 40% of the final project price. This could be a whole lot or it could just be a little. It all depends on the project.

Online Juror

This just sounds fun to me. How about you?
eJury.com this is a tool that the attorneys use before going to trial. They do mock trials via the internet. You can get paid an average of $5-$10 a case.

Online Verdict.com: This is another tool that attorneys use to prepare for cases. If you participate you can get paid $20 - $60 per case.

Trial Practices, Inc: This is the same as above but the pay is $10 a case. Click on Juror to sign up.

Trial Juries. com: This is also the same as above. The pay is around $30 a case.

Today I am going to tell you about some mystery shopping companies as well as some jobs that I have ran across that nurses can do.

With the Mystery shopping, you will get to do restaurant shops, video stores, banks, book stores, etc. Usually these shops will pay for the product that you purchase along with give you an incentive to do the shop. The only thing about doing mystery shopping is that you need to be very organized and attentive to the shop. Anyone can do this but pay attention to the details that the company is looking for.

Game Films Consultants. This is my favorite because I do mystery shopping for them at steak houses. We get to go have a great meal that usually pays around $35. You fill out a review online and send a picture of your receipt.

Second To None This is also one of my favorites. They are easy to work with and shops are available often.

Customer Service Experts This one is one that I have not shopped with but I have it on my list and I am signed up with them. I just have not taken time to watch for shops to come available with this company.

Corporate Research International: You would conduct on site and phone evaluations.

Mystery Guest Inc.: You would visit business then complete an online survey. Check the details regarding payment and if you get to keep the items. I have not used this company at all but I have been told it is good.

Nurses: I am not a nurse but I ran across several things that a nurse could do from their home and I wanted to share it with you.

Atena hires nurses to work from home in case management, precertification and as nurse consultants. Must have an RN License.

Fonemed hires home based nurses for triage calls and home based customer service reps. Must have a RN license

Humana hires home based nurses for inpatient case managers, concurrent review and case management. Must have a RN License.
