The Down Home Benny has a sweet waffle with salad, poached egg, beef bacon, olives, guacamole and hollandaise sauce. The waffle is crunchy yet soft, not as soft as the japanese style waffles. The variety of flavours somehow come together very nicely.

Western Food Disappointment

We heard that Morganfield's in Pavillion served some really good food but we've never been there. So when we were in Sunway Pyramid and found out there was a Morganfield's there we gave it a go. The waiter informed us it has been in operation for a few months.

So we ordered an appetizer of Bacon Wrapped Meat Balls (6 deep-fried meatballs).

The two mains were the Pork Shoulder Chop (pork shoulder loin served with red skin mashed potatoes, garden vegetables and creamy mustard grain sauce) and the Tequila Spiked Prawns ( prawns marinated in spicy tequila lime-paprika marinate, served with pilaf rice and garden vegetables). In the menu, all three dishes had little stars next to them denoting they were "Oinkingly Good!".

For drinks, we ordered an Iced Latte and 100 Plus (bottomless).

All together, this was RM 128.00. First the drinks arrive, no complaints with the 100 Plus of course. But oddly the Iced Latte was totally sugar-free and no extra sugar was given so we requested some from the waiter, who gave us sugar syrup. The meat balls arrived, and we found them to be pretty nice. The flavour was a spicy sweetness that was to our liking. Unfortunately the mains were disappointing. The Pork Shoulder dish had plain tasting, lumpy mashed potatoes, vegetables that weren't soft and rather rubbery pork which wasn't well cooked (and resulted in a tummy upset). The Tequila Prawn dish was meh in flavour, and the vegetables were also not cooked to softness (I love well done vegetables, not the super crunchy hard ones). Considering how expensive the dishes were, this was a total let down.

Complaints were made to the waiter. He was nice enough to reduce the bill. Perhaps since this particular branch of Morganfield's is new, they haven't yet sorted out a lot of issues in running the business. But I'm thinking we won't be going there again.

Super Spicy Tom Yam Soup

Dinner at Para Thai restaurant, Mitsui Outlet Park.
The most spicy seafood tom yam soup I have ever had! Also had fishcakes, chicken with basil, phad Thai, and sago with honeydew. The chicken had a bit of cartilage bits mixed with the lean meat, but otherwise there was no other complaints. Verdict: good!

New favourite breakfast meal

Tried out The Fifth Palate in Kota Damansara on a Sunday afternoon. It was packed and so ended up in the little outdoor area, which still had a good ambiance. Orders are placed at the counter.

The Butcher's Breakfast (RM 29) immediately caught my eye. It comes with eggs (either scrambled, poached or fried), ham/ bacon, sausage, tater tots, portobello mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, wholemeal rye bread, some rocket and a chutney.

The meats have the best flavor and texture I have tried so far. Totally can't find any fault withthe meal, although pricier than similar dishes elsewhere.

Food was served within 15-20 minutes of placing the order, which was really good considering how packed it was. Looking forward to trying more stuff from this place soon.

It seems like a never-ending problem during this time every year, the haze. It just feels like your lungs are working doubly hard.

Ended up at a cafe to get a drink to try and wash away the discomfort all this pollution has caused.

Went to Legends Bar at TTDI the other day and tried out the Heaven is Pork pizza which was nice. It has a spiciness to it that is unique.

Also totally satisfying was their version of Pigs in a Blanket.

If you are a lover of durian fruit and you live in Adelaide, then head to 116, Flinders Street Adelaise SA. The Second Floor Lounge (Facebook page) serves desserts such as Durain Creme Brulee, Durian Eton Mess, and Durian Parfait. If you aren't much of a durian fan, then there are other desserts such as Strawberry Pandan Waffle and Summer Parfait to name a few.

For starters and appetizers, the Hog Tail Fries and Monterey Cheese Sticks are a good way to begin a meal.

The cheese sticks come with jalapeno jelly as a dip, and it goes extremely well with the cheese. Definitely recommended!

Both the prime rib dishes were excellent, the meat was soft, juicy and full of flavor. The chicken and rib combo was also good although it would be best to order it with a sauce as only the ribs are coated with sauce while the chicken pieces are not.

Hoggies Rocky Road Sundae

Finally the dessert was enormous! 8 scoops ice cream on top of chocolate mud cake, chocolate sauce and toppings. Best to share with 2 or more people, unless you have a high sweet tolerance!

I never knew I'd be learning something new by having dinner at a sushi restaurant...

Okay here's what happened. My friend and I were having sushi, and decided to order something new, a drink called Ramune. The waitress brings this uniquely shaped glass bottle, and shows us how to open it. The bottle-cap has a little marble in its center which needs to be pushed downwards and into the neck of the bottle using a marble popper that is supplied within the packaging of the bottle.

I was so impressed with the bottle! In fact I thought it was a cool new invention from Japan to bottle carbonated drinks. However, a quick search on the internet proved otherwise. The bottle design was invented by Hiram Codd, an Englishman who patented his design in 1872.

Apparently, the older Codd bottles are now collectors items, with the rare ones fetching upwards of several thousand dollars. Not bad for something that must have been as common as a Coke bottle in those days...

A Sweet Snack - Onde Onde

My favourite kuih (cake or pastry) is definitely the onde onde. For those of you who've never tried it before, you don't know what you're missing!

Onde onde is a Nyonya snack that is very popular in Malaysia. It is round and about half the size of a ping pong ball, and is green in colour due to the use of pandan (screwpine leaf) juice concentrate as a flavouring, with a surface covered in a thin layer of grated coconut. It has a soft chewy texture and its centre is filled with gula melaka (palm sugar) which melts as the onde onde is cooked, making it wonderfully sweet and juicy.

I decided to try and make some onde onde and after some trial and error, I managed to successfully make a pretty tasty batch of onde onde. *proud of myself*

Here's the recipe i used:

Half a grated coconut (white part only).
300g peeled, boiled and mashed sweet potato.
1 tbsp pandan juice concentrate (blend 4 pandan leaves with 1 tbsp water, then squeze the leaves to obtained the juice.
A pinch of salt.
100g palm sugar, cut into small pieces (heat for 10 seconds in microwave oven to soften before cutting).
90g glutinous rice flour, sieved.

Method:

Add the salt and glutinous rice flour to the finely mashed sweet potatoes. Mix together.
Add the pandan juice and knead till it forms a slightly sticky dough. Add more flour if needed.
Pinch a small piece of dough and roll into a small ball. Flatten slightly between palms of hands, then add a piece of the sugar in the middle of the flattened dough. Roll back into ball and set aside. Repeat to form more of these sugar filled dough.
In a pan of boiling water, drop the sugar filled dough. When they begin to float, remove and place in a plate of grated coconut.

Pirate $hip

Ever wanted your very own pirate ship? Well maybe just ask the people who built the Pirates of the Caribbean 4 ship that was on exhibition in Mid Valley Megamall if they'd be willing to donate it. I'm sure they wont have any more use for it...unless of course there's a 5th installment of the franchise in the making?? :p

Hmm I wonder how much it cost to build.....
