Thrift Store Finds!!

I hit one of my favorite thrift stores the other day and I guess I was really in the mood for the "Bric a Brac" because I left the store with an armload of goodies for a little over $35.00

Here are a few of the things I purchased:

Pottery barn wooden shelf - like new with tag marked $29.99, purchased for $7.50

Cute Vintage Porcelain Elf (Homco?)

I received some new items in the mail yesterday, and really love the Tulum Bracelet. The pictures don't do it justice - it is very well made. Three strands of turquoise beads on brown leather cording with sliding silver adjustable accents that allows you to slip in on & off. I will enter a couple of pics of the bracelet on one of my daughters later today.

Baby Leather Shoes from Thrift Store Handbags - Great Idea!

Since I am a Thrift Store Addict and Love to find Creative Ways to Recycle, I found this ingenious post on making those cute baby/toddler leather shoes that cost an arm & a leg. These are great!

I wanted shoes for the twins to be able to wear and not wear out quickly. I had purchased some patterns on Etsy and I knew if I could just get leather, they would be more durable and good for extended use. But I didn't want to pay for leather. So I went to my nearest thrift shop and bought some leather handbags for $.75 to $1.50 a piece and "Wha La!" Here is the result:

I had purchased some patterns on Etsy and I knew if I could just get leather, they would be more durable and good for extended use. But I didn't want to pay for leather. So I went to my nearest thrift shop and bought some leather handbags for $.75 to $1.50 a piece and "Wha La!" Here is the result:
What I learned:

Soft subtle leather works the best.

If your leather is more rigid, you can use this for soles on fabric shoes...simply glue (or stitch) it on the bottom of your finished shoe.

You NEED a leather needle. This project is impossible (at least with my machine) without one.

These make up pretty quickly because you don't have to line them (you can if you want but there really is no need).

When cutting your bags apart, try to get as much in one piece as possible (as you are searching for bags at your local thrift shop, look for bags with large pieces of leather and maybe bring your pattern with you to get an idea of how big your pieces need to be).

There are a lot of great shoe patterns on Etsy for pretty reasonable prices. Most can be emailed to you almost instantly (which is nice for a not-so-patient, home-with-babies all day person like me). There are also some great FREE patterns available online. Winter Weather Through the Eyes of Little Girls

No school today due to the freezing rain and snow that has moved through our area. My girls, ages 4 and 6 are so content to watch Disney channel, sit near the fire and watch the snow coming down. Wait, what is that on the deck? It's a dead bird. Sophie wants to go get it. "Put on your shoes, do you have something to put it in?" are my practical comments. Out she goes in her pajamas and her boots, picks up the sweet bird and gingerly lays it in her box. "Gotta go show Daddy" Daddy promises to take her down to the woods in a little while and they can put the bird in the leaves.

I am answering calls, emails and text messages about issues and work, Daddy gets called by his boss to come in for a little bit. I remind him about the bird in the box in Sophie's closet. Mommy scrambles around to get the girls dressed - Ava wants to hold the bird, Sophie claims its hers. Snow falling heavier, Daddy ready to get outside, but of course they need to bring special things for the birds resting spot . . a prettier box, some ribbon. Ava cries about the bird "it's just a baby" she says. "Honey, it died because it was weak or sick" Why are they so sad about this little bird and I don't have much feeling about it, where is my compassion?

Out they go, so excited to walk down to the woods. They lay the bird in the leaves and snow by a tree. Even though I watch from the living room, I know what they are saying "Bye bye birdie, we love you . . ."

Now they are playing in the snow, catching snowflakes on their tongue. The world is a winter wonderland.

They come inside and I ask them about the bird. "Huh?" "Oh yes, it's down in the woods"

Treasure those little moments, they pass so quickly.
