Whale Shark Swim Season 2011 Cancun

Several whale sharks, were spotted north east of Cancun and Isla Mujeres. A group of 12 was sighted. Another group of three were seen about a week ago passing by the Cancun coast line.

Predictions state that the Whale Shark Season in Cancun will begin most likely earlier than last year.

Our scouts go out to spot them and monitor them around mid-may.

Cancun Underwater Museum, statues changing

The Statues at the Cancun Underwater Museum are getting populated! Coral is starting to grow on them, due to the chemical composition they are made of. Some days ago we went diving with our good friend and Artist Jason deCaires Taylor to the Museum, the dive was fantastic and it was great to see lobsters, several starfish and many more critters that already found a home at this amazing site, here is a photo taken by Jason to document the change of the statues.

Referral Open Water Diver Courses Dive the Cancun Underwater Museum

We have been getting several divers that wish to do Dives 1 and 2 of their Referral Open Water Diver Certification program at the Cancun Underwater Museum. Since it is a shallow area 11mts. (33ft) and it is surrounded by 3 mooring buoys, it is easy to have a descent line, there is hardly any current.
These new divers have had a fantastic experience and have videos and photos of it. When they are told that the statues will change shape and form, they seem exited to visit the Museum again when they come back to visit Cancun and dive the Under Water Museum.
We do have on staff a very good and experienced Underwater Photographer that provides the video and photo services.
Universal Referrals, SSI, SDI, PADI are welcome to dive the Cancun Underwater Museum as part of their course, as well as divers taking their full Open Water Diver Course. There is no extra cost to do it.

We have been there several times, one of them was to take our time, to check the whole site. After that we have been bringing divers. The statues were sunk less than 2 months ago and they are already a habitat to several types of Coral, bringing the complex and countless underwater species that develop their echo system right there.

It is becoming popular among the underwater microscopic life also lobsters, parrot fish (different kinds), Gray Angels (many) and lots more.

A few days ago we dove with Jason the artist that creates this amazing statues that attract divers to enjoy the site, but helps the environment through a process that is not like many solutions to climate change or to aid the coral reefs that are long time projects, expecting a later solution.

As the coral grows, the statues will change forms and shapes, so it will be visited by those who dove the statues to witness and document the pass of time. UNDER WATER MUSEUM CANCUN

Artist Jason DeCaires Taylor, is done!! More than 400 statues have been sunk in Cancun's beautiful Caribbean waters. This is just a part of a big project that includes local and international artists that will soon be sinking more art.

Jason's sculptures are made of a special chemical and cement that allows subaquatic echo-systems to develop on the statues. These sculptures change as the organisms start to grow, so this museum will always be changing, and never the same, people that visit now are taking many photos so they can compare the growth of life along the years.

Hurricane Paula shifted its path and now it's directed to Cuba, and will soon cease to exist!

It passed through the southern part of this state, not even close to Cancun, all we had was some rain and waves.
Tomorrow diving outside the bay with Advanced Open Water Courses we are going deep to the Cancun Wreck Dives, one of the students, did not have his certification,card with him, so we did a PADI check, he as well did not have any prove of number of dives, because he lost his log book and card.
We helped him get a replacement card, and he liked this cool log book as well.....

Wreck diving in Cancun is used for the Deep Dive for the Deep diving specialty or for the Advanced Open Water Deep dive, although the skills are different for both dives or Specialty Courses (Wreck or Deep) and we cannot tag both dives on one, meaning each dive is used either for the Wreck dive or Specialty or for the Deep Dive or Specialty.

The Advanced Open Water Course is full of fun and diving experience, exploring 5 dive themes, 2 of them are core dives: Deep Dive, Navigation Dive, the other 3 themes of your dives you may choose. ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVES & SPECIALTY COURSES

Aristos Reef System

Today we visited the Aristos Reef, it is a great dive, it has several coral caves and today we did the whole narrow penetration, we saw a great big green moray, turned around and realized no one had a camera!!! it is always there when you do not need it!!

Tomorrow we are going again, this time with cameras, but also we are going to do the Under Water Digital Photography Course!

Have been diving a lot lately, water was a little colder than normal 73 degrees FHT was the lowest, it was due to a thermocline! With my friend Specialty Underwater Digital Photography Diver Chris, we went wreck diving, the wrecks are close to Cancun 25 to 30 min. boat ride.

C-58 General Anaya is wreck sunken along several others Admiral Class American Navy boats that were sold to Mexico in the late 60's, this in particular was a mine sweeper that was in the Pacific on World War II. They were sunken to create artificial reef, this wreck has two different sites, the stern and bow are separated!

Gulf Spill

The Oil Spill that affects the Gulf of Mexico, will not affect diving in Cancun nor Cozumel, the Caribbean and south area of the Gulf will most likely not be affected, due to the current at this area runs South to North the spill most probably will not affect these areas.

Cancun dive yesterday

Diving in Cancun yesterday was very nice, calm day! we saw a nurse shark at the Aristos reef System 20 mins. from our dock in Cancun, the group was small, it is slow season now. Low season allows more private diving, less tanks, equipment on board. Today the water was great, warm, nice visibility, saw several parrot fish while diving El Grampin also part of Cancun's National Park, at the coral reef swim through we were surrounded by several schools of grunts and blue tangs. Great Dive.

Diving Tip, for better Air consumption, stream line your body, swim calm with a nice kick cycle and rhythm arms,should be on the side or front crossed together. Kicks from the hip and full leg kick not bending your knee to much and always remember:
"The more you move, the more air you consume." When drift diving assume comfortable position, if you limit your movements to only the necessary ones, you can expect a lot more air !!!

WHALE SHARKS.

Officially the whale shark swim season begins June 1st, sometimes they pass Cancun and stay between Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox.....the Plankton is getting here, the whale sharks are not close yet, they have been spotted away, maybe the first whale shark scouts will get here in a couple of days, maybe our scouts will find them today and determine when they expect them here.
On thing for sure is that they are on their way and if they are a little late ( June 1st) that can only mean they will stay a little later!!! Some times divers encounter a smaill group of whale sharks close to Cancun Diving reefs ~

EQUALIZING TIPS

When we go diving, a lot of us never have this issues, but we never know if on our next dive we will!! It is always good to know our own body so you do not get influenced by others, so pay attention to your ears they will let you know info, to perform the (valsalva maneuver) equalization when you begin to feel discomfort (pressure) in your ears.
When attempting to equalize do not limit your ways to achieve it, you can pinch nose, move your jaw, swallow etc. if you cannot equalize you may try:
-If you know you have problems chew gum prior to diving. This move your jaw and the muscles inside help our airways, sinuses to open.
-While inside the water, always first try to go up to a shallower depth (not all the way up) and try descending again, if that does not work:
-Move your jaw around, swallow.
-Massage muscle behind your jaw, move your head so your ears can point towards the surface, then the other one keep doing this for several seconds, and try to equalize again. Try this next time you dive or come diving to Cancun and try!!!

WHEN YOU HAVE A COLD!

If you have to go diving, the best is to use a nasal decongestant, but better is to avoid diving when you have a cold!! ~
