Haute couture is a style of handmade Parisian clothing. This secret club of about 200 women all commonly desire to acquire the most expensive clothes that money can buy. Twice a year, the exclusive, all over the world travel to paris fashion week to get a glimpse of the Haute Couture shows. Pieces range from 20 thousand dollars to 6 figures. Often correlated with philanthropy. Pieces can be donated to museums if in good conditions, and written off as a tax loss.

Mass producing and the preference of ready to wear clothing has taken over the fashion market. The wearable art form once employed 46 thousand people after the war and now only 4 and a half thousand. Frances Glessner Lee

2014-04-10T19:09:00.001-07:00

Frances Glessner Lee (March 25, 1878 – Jan. 27, 1962) a chicago native was a millionaire heiress. Her an her brother were homeschooled but she was not allowed to attend college. It wasn't until she was 52 before she took steps to starting her career path. Revolutionizing the study of crime scene investigation, She founded and funded Harvard's department of legal medicine. ( The first program in the nation for forensic pathology ).

Glessner was a fan of the Sherlock Holmes series and her perfectionism can be reflected in her family upbringing. Her father was a collector of fine furniture and antiques, and the family home is now a museum.

Known as " The Nutshell Studies of the Unexplained ", in the 1930's Glessner created dollhouses in replica of homicides to help detectives in training. Before DNA, and CSI we had dollhouses. These surreal like homes had doll corpses as victims and blood stains in great and gory details. Glessner would go to extreme lengths to insinuate realisticness which has proven to be effective till this day.

The documentary " Of dolls and murder " explores the 16 nutshell diaroma studies still in museums and CSI detective seminars today. Modern day forensics built on a 1 inch to 1 foot scale, check out more of this tiny world of big time murder at ofdollsandmurder.com

Wasteland.

2014-04-10T19:06:00.004-07:00

Contemporary artist Vik Muniz born and raised in Rio de Janeiro ( best known for his collection sugar children that changed his career ) relocated to his hometown for 2 years to work on his project " Wasteland ". His hope to change the lives of a group of people with the material they use everyday lead him to Jardim Gramacho, the largest landfill in the world.

The 3,000 pickers of Gramacho are responsible for recycling paper, plastic, cardboard, metal and other miscellaneous items. The work conditions are dangerous and many accidents occur as well as gruesome things get dumped there. Without help from the city the ACAMJG paved roads, built a sewer system and recyclying center which helps get trash off the streets.

Tiao is the president. When he first started the association everyone including the pickers laughed at his ideas. He has a daughter who wants to study psychology he hopes to fund through his salary as a picker.

Zumbi started working with his mother after his father died. He got into a major accident and over 20 people from the landfill donated blood. He's a board association member who picks books from the garbage, to read and hopes to one day open a community library. His dream came true with the monetary help from the portraits and the ACAMJG office now has 15 computers.

Isis worked at the landfill for 5 years. Her son died at age 3 of acute pneumonia and her husband left, taking their 8 year old daughter with him. Isis completed a secretarial course and remarried. She found her ex husband and daughter but they refused to see her.

Suelem started working at the age of 7 yrs old. By the age of 18 she had 2 children by a drug dealer she moved in with when she was 12. She later become a stay at home mother, having a third child and being supported by his father.

Irma is a trained chef who cooks food for the pickers. She uses ingredients from the trash and food trucks that dump at the landfill to make sure none of the pickers go hungry. She set up a small cooking business with the proceeds from the project but returned to Gramacho stating she missed her colleagues.

Magna rather pick then turn tricks in Copacabana and thinks it's more honest and dignified though it stinks. She divorced her husband, works in a drug store now and enjoys the time she has at home with her son.

Valter has worked as a picker for 26 yrs. He is the Vice President of the association Of ACAMJG. He died of lung cancer shortly after meeting Vik. He worked up until his death, he was a proud picker. Vik Muniz's " Picture of Garbage " series consigned directly to auction at Phillips de Pury and company raising over $250,000. All the money was given back, funded truck equipment, and helped open a learning center. Watch this compelling documentary " Wasteland " and get a more intimate look at the transformation Vik Muniz made in these peoples lives.
