TCC/LE (Take Command Console) Improved Command Line

In the days before Windows, we all used the command line. Most of the commands available from the DOS command line were implemented by a program called COMMAND.COM, which later became CMD.EXE. It's still there in Windows today. If you go to a command prompt, you're actually running the latest incarnation of CMD.EXE.

In the early days of COMMAND.COM, the number of commands that it provided was limited. So an enterprising company created something called 4DOS, which was basically a drop-in replacement for COMMAND.COM that implemented all the existing commands plus lots more. Over the decades, 4DOS became 4NT and then TCC (Take Command Console). And TCC is still available today, as both a commercial and a free version.

The free version, while not as feature-laden as the paid-for one, still has over 100 additional commands, on top of what the built-in CMD.EXE provides. Such as the MEMORY command, shown below. So if, like me, you're still a command-line junkie, and you want something that's more powerful than CMD.EXE but not as difficult to learn as PowerShell, why not try the free version of TCC? It's called TCC/LE, is available in both 32- and 64-bit flavours, runs under Windows XP and above, and you can get it from http://jpsoft.com/tccle-cmd-replacement.html.

TCC/LE is a 6 MB download, and virus-free according to the latest VirusTotal check. And it will exist happily on your Windows system without affecting the availability of your existing command prompt, so you can easily switch between them as you wish.

How to Make Your Windows PC Boot Faster

Looking to slash your Windows PC's boot time to the bone? We'll show you how we made one system boot 30 percent faster--without any hardware upgrades.

Back in the old days of 2010, I used to walk into my home office in the morning, hit the power button on my production system, and then head back upstairs to have breakfast. By the time I returned to the office, my system had fully booted up and was ready to go.

Then I upgraded to a solid-state drive RAID array--and now my system boots in about 30 seconds. However, not everyone is willing to spend $700 on PC's storage, so I decided to find out how much I could speed up a PC's boot time without spending a dime. After several hours of tweaking and testing, I managed to reduce the boot time of a PC from 69 seconds to 47 seconds. Here's how I did it.

The Test System

Rather than artificially creating a slow-booting system by installing a bunch of glop from the Web, I decided to use an existing system--one that I use almost daily. It's not my speedy, SSD-equipped production system, but my system for performance-testing add-in graphics cards. Since that system also serves as a backup content editing system, I've installed Adobe Master Collection 5.0 on it, along with all of the extraneous stuff Adobe likes to add to a system. Microsoft Office is another major software component.

Among its hardware components are a Core i7 965X quad-core CPU, 6GB of RAM, and a 7200-rpm Seagate 7200.11 1TB hard drive.

This setup allowed me to test real-world improvements in boot times on a system that reflected real-world usage. Over the years, I have installed numerous graphics cards on it, which also means numerous driver installs and uninstalls. Games and applications have come and gone, too. What you won't see from optimizing a gradually cluttered real-world system are insanely big improvements, as you might with some of the artificial tests that are floating around.

The PC Boot Process

Illustration by The Heads of StateWhen you fire up your PC, the processor performs some initial startup steps and then looks for a specific memory address in the boot loader ROM. Next, the processor starts to run code that it finds at this location, which is the system boot loader. The boot ROM enumerates all of the hardware in the system and performs a number of diagnostic tests. Then it looks for a specific location on the first storage device--probably your hard drive, assuming that the system isn't set up to boot from a network--and runs code found in that location. That's the start of the operating system load process.

For Windows, the code that your processor loads is the Windows Boot Manager. The boot manager then begins the process of loading Windows. At some point during this process, the core of the Windows operating system--the kernel--loads into memory along with some key drivers and the hardware abstraction layer. The HAL functions as the interface between the operating system and the underlying hardware. After this, the Windows Executive, a collection of essential services such as the virtual memory manager and the I/O manager, fires up and loads the Windows Registry.

The Registry contains information about what services, drivers, and applications load during boot. The Registry is actually a database that stores configuration settings, options, and key locations for both high-level applications and low-level OS services. Over time, as users install and uninstall apps, the size of the Registry can balloon, thereby increasing load times. Boot times are also affected by the loading of key services and startup applications.

This summary is by no means a detailed description of the PC boot process. Consult a detailed tutorial on the Windows boot process--such as this one--if you want to dive deeper.

In view of the PC boot process, we can explore several areas to reduce boot times:

The System BIOS or Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)
The Windows Boot Manager
System Services
Application Services (helpers)
Startup Programs
Windows Registry
Let's consider each of these Windows functions individually.

Disabling Extraneous Services

Before proceeding further, I needed to measure my system's pretweak boot time. One way to do this is to create a text file containing the text "Stop the Stopwatch." Drop this into the Windows startup applications folder in C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. This allows you to time the boot process with a stopwatch and know when to stop the watch. The boot process isn't completely finished at this point, but the system will be in a usable state.

Measured by this method, my system took 69 seconds to boot--far too long. It was time to nuke some services.

First, I looked at the startup services that opened when my system booted. You can check the list for your PC by running msconfig, a built-in Windows utility. Click the Start menu, type Run, press Enter, and then type msconfig in the Run box. Click the Services tab. In the accompanying screenshot you can see that, for simplicity's sake, I ticked the checkbox next to 'Hide all Microsoft services'; nevertheless, I did plan all along to disable a few Windows services.

In addition to disabling all of the services shown in the above list, I disabled six Microsoft Windows services from starting on boot:

Microsoft Office Groove Audit Service

Smart Card Removal Policy
Smart Card

Since I don't use Windows Media Center on this system, disabling the first item on the list was an easy decision. And these changes only scratch the surface. Another item that you might disable on startup is Remote Login (if you never use it). The right choices depend on your needs.

After disabling the extraneous application services and a handful of Microsoft services, I found that the system now took 68 seconds to boot--not much of an improvement. The next step was to disable a few startup applications

How to Repair a Corrupt Windows 7 Installation

Windows 7 may be Microsoft's best desktop OS to date, but it's not immune to problems and corruption. We show you how to repair a misbehaving Windows 7 installation using the In-Place Upgrade option.

Every operating system needs an occasional repair job, and Windows 7 is no exception. Whether the source of the problem is corrupt data, a particularly brutal piece of malware, or some other serious issue, you'll occasionally have to reinstall your copy of Windows.

Wiping your hard drive and performing a fresh installation can be a huge headache; but fortunately there's a way to repair a corrupt Windows 7 installation while keeping all your programs, personal data, and user accounts intact. With Windows 7 you can perform an in-place upgrade installation to repair a flaky existing install. Though technically designed to upgrade older Windows operating systems like Vista, the in-place upgrade installation option can also be used to repair an existing installation of Windows 7.

The in-place Upgrade installation involves multiple stages, starting with copying installation files to the destination drive and gathering existing files and settings.

Note that you must perform the in-place upgrade process from within Windows; if your PC can't fully boot to the Windows desktop, this repair guide is not for you. A few other limitations come up later in the article, so be sure to read the entire guide thoroughly before attempting to repair your corrupt copy of Windows 7. Performing a repair installation should be your last resort, and you should consider it only if you have already removed spyware from your PC, reinstalled your drivers, and unsuccessfully tried to restore from an earlier (working) version of Windows 7 using System Restore.

Prepare Your PC for Windows 7

Before performing a repair installation, you should take a few precautionary measures to ensure that the process goes smoothly. The first step is to back up all of your critical files to an external storage device. Though the repair process is unlikely to fail or to render any of your files unrecoverable, it's always a smart idea to back up your data.

After you've backed up your system's important data, we recommend uninstalling any third-party security software such as firewalls or antivirus applications. You can always reinstall them after completing the repair process; but since you'll be initiating this process from within Windows, you need to remove any security applications that actively scan files. You should also download and store all of the drivers that your system needs to function--especially the network controller, which tells your network adapter how to access the Internet.

After backing up all of your drivers, clean out all of the temporary files and junk data that have accumulated in Windows 7 over the course of prolonged use. To do this, click the Start button, and in the Search field type Folder Options; then press Enter. In the Folder Options window, click the View tab and select Show hidden files, folders and drives; then click OK.

Next, initiate a Disk Cleanup by opening the Start menu and selecting Computer; right-click your primary drive (the C: drive by default) and open the Properties menu. Select the Disk Cleanup utility in the lower-right portion of the menu, and select Clean up system files. The Disk Cleanup utility should take a few moments to rescan the drive. Next, click the More Options tab, and select Clean Up in the 'System Restore and Shadow Copies' section at the bottom of the menu. In the dialog box that appears, click the Delete button; then navigate back to the Disk Cleanup tab, confirm that all items in the Files to Delete list are checked, and click OK. The Disk Cleanup utility should clear out outdated system files, temporary data, and other digital detritus. Depending on how much junk data is on your drive, this step may take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.

After running the Disk Cleanup utility, you should clean out a few folders manually. Open the C: drive again, and double-click the Windows folder. Scroll down the list of folders and delete any files in the Prefetch and Temp folders. Be sure to delete only files within those two folders and not the folders themselves. Next, navigate back to the C: drive, and double-click the Users folder. Within the Users folder, double-click first the folder for your particular username, and then the AppData folder (if you don't see the AppData folder, you must not have selected 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' earlier), the Local folder, and finally the Temp folder. Delete all of the files in this Temp folder as well; then restart your system.

1. Open Apps the Easy Way

Want to launch programs in Windows 7 without lifting your hands from your keyboard? You can open any app on your PC by hitting the Windows key and typing the first few letters of the application's name (chr for Google Chrome, it for iTunes, and so on), then hitting Enter. You can also press Windows + 1 to open the first app pinned on your taskbar, Windows + 2 to open the second app, and so on.

2. Tweak Windows's AutoPlay Settings

Ever wonder why DVD movies automatically start playing the moment you pop them into your PC? It's controlled by Windows AutoPlay. Go to the Control Panel, AutoPlay, and you can tell Windows exactly what you want it to do every time you insert a CD or DVD, plug in a camera or smartphone, and so on.

3. Turn Off Automatic Window Management

By default, Windows 7 automatically changes the size of your open windows if you drag them to the edge of the screen. Drag a window to one edge of the screen and it "docks" there while resizing to fill half the screen, drag it to the top to make that window go full-screen, and so on. It can be handy, but it can also be annoying. You can turn it off by going to Control Panel, Ease of Access Center, click Make the mouse easier to use, then uncheck Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen and click OK.

When you're having problems with Windows or your everyday applications, try using those apps with a User Account different from the one you usually use and see if you have the same problems. If your spare account doesn't have the same problems, whatever is causing the problem most likely isn't that deeply rooted in your system—it may just be a corrupt settings file somewhere, for example. If both accounts have the same problem, you may need to reinstall the application itself, or possibly even reinstall Windows.

5. Reveal File Extensions in Windows Explorer

File extensions (a holdover from early DOS days, believe it or not) tell you what kind of file you're looking at. Thus, a Word file has a .doc extension; a digital photo, a .jpg extension; and so on. These days, Windows Explorer hides the file extension by default, but you can show them by pressing Windows + E to bring up Windows Explorer, clicking Organize, Folder and search options, selecting the View tab, and unchecking Hide extensions for known file types.

6. Disable Your Laptop Trackpad While Typing

The most important difference between a trojan virus/trojan horse and a virus is that trojans don’t spread themselves. Trojan horses disguise themselves as valuable and useful software available for download on the internet. Most people are fooled by this ploy and end up dowloading the virus disguised as some other application. The name comes from the mythical "Trojan Horse" that the Ancient Greeks set upon the city of Troy.

A trojan horse is typically separated into two parts – a server and a client. It’s the client that is cleverly disguised as significant software and positioned in peer-to-peer file sharing networks, or unauthorized download websites. Once the client Trojan executes on your computer, the attacker, i.e. the person running the server, has a high level of control over your computer, which can lead to destructive effects depending on the attacker’s purpose.

A trojan horse virus can spread in a number of ways. The most common means of infection is through email attachments. The developer of the virus usually uses various spamming techniques in order to distribute the virus to unsuspecting users. Another method used by malware developers to spread their trojan horse viruses is via chat software such as Yahoo Messenger and Skype. Another method used by this virus in order to infect other machines is through sending copies of itself to the people in the address book of a user whose computer has already been infected by the virus.

Types of Trojan Horse Viruses

Trojan Horses have developed to a remarkable level of cleverness, which makes each one radically different from each other. For an inclusive understanding, we have classified them into the following:

Remote Access Trojans

Remote Access Trojans are the most frequently available trojans. These give an attacker absolute control over the victim’s computers. The attacker can go through the files and access any personal information about the user that may be stored in the files, such as credit card numbers, passwords, and vital financial documents.

Password Sending Trojans

The intention of a Password Sending Trojan is to copy all the cached passwords and look for other passwords as you key them into your computer, and send them to particular email addresses. These actions are performed without the awareness of the users. Passwords for restricted websites, messaging services, FTP services and email services come under direct threat with this kind of trojan.

Key Loggers

Key Loggers type of Trojans logs victims’ keystrokes and then send the log files to the attacker. It then searches for passwords or other sensitive data in the log files. Most of the Key Loggers come with two functions, such as online and offline recording. Of course, they can be configured to send the log file to a specific email address on a daily basis.

Destructive Trojans

The only purpose of Destructive Trojans is to destroy and delete files from the victims’ computers. They can automatically delete all the core system files of the computer. The destructive trojan could be controlled by the attacker or could be programmed to strike like a logic bomb, starting on a particular day or at specific time.

Denial of Service (DoS) Attack Trojans

The core design intention behind Denial of Service (DoS) Attack Trojan is to produce a lot of internet traffic on the victim’s computer or server, to the point that the Internet connection becomes too congested to let anyone visit a website or download something. An additional variation of DoS Trojan is the Mail-Bomb Trojan, whose key plan is to infect as many computers as possible, concurrently attacking numerous email addresses with haphazard subjects and contents that cannot be filtered.

Proxy/Wingate Trojans

Proxy/Wingate Trojans convert the victim’s computer into a Proxy/Wingate server. That way, the infected computer is accessible to the entire globe to be used for anonymous access to a variety of unsafe Internet services. The attacker can register domains or access pornographic websites with stolen credit cards or do related illegal activities without being traced.

FTP Trojans

FTP Trojans are possibly the most simple, and are outdated. The only action they perform is, open a port numbered 21 – the port for FTP transfers – and let anyone connect to your computer via FTP protocol. Advance versions are password-protected, so only the attacker can connect to your computer.

Software Detection Killers

Software Detection Killers kill popular antivirus/firewall programs that guard your computer to give the attacker access to the victim’s machine.

Note: A Trojan could have any one or a combination of the above mentioned functionalities.

The best way to prevent a Trojan Horse Virus from entering and infecting your computer is to never open email attachments or files that have been sent by unknown senders. However, not all files we can receive are guaranteed to be virus-free. With this, a good way of protecting your PC against malicious programs such as this harmful application is to install and update an antivirus program.

Tablet computers aren't new. In fact, they've been around for about 20 years, but nobody much was buying them until April 2010, when Apple shook up the consumer electronics marketplace with the iPad. Perhaps because it bore a strong resemblance to Apple's already wildly popular iPhone – it even runs the same operating system – the iPad caught fire immediately with the public and turned tablet computers into a major product category. And why shouldn't they be? Tablet computers are the ultimate in electronic simplicity. Highly portable, with few built-in controls except for a flat touch-screen interface, tablet computers are attractive, easy to use and just plain cool.

Competition wasn't long in coming. Google had already released an open-source operating system for smart phones called Android and it was easy to scale it up for tablet computers the way Apple had scaled up its iOS operating system for the iPad. The Android 3.0 operating system, codenamed "Honeycomb," was the first version intended for tablet use and in February 2011 Motorola released the first Android tablet: the Xoom.

Like the iPad, Android tablets have a touch-screen interface, which allows the user to activate icons with the tap of a finger or move objects around and scroll screens with a swiping gesture of their hands. Both Apple and the various Android manufacturers offer an online marketplace where programs – known as apps in mobile computing parlance – can be purchased and downloaded directly to the device. In fact, Android tablets are enough like iPads that at a casual glance a user unfamiliar with the two types of tablet might mistake one for the other.

So which is the better tablet? That's a tough question. It's not so much like comparing apples (or Apples) with oranges as it's like comparing one or two apples with a whole basketful of oranges. Only Apple makes the iPad and there are only two versions: the iPad and the iPad 2. On the other hand, any company that's able to manufacture hardware that will support Google's operating system can make an Android tablet and inevitably some companies are going to do a better job of it than others. Some companies even disguise their Android tablets as something else. (The Barnes & Noble Nook e-book reader is an android tablet with a limited range of features and a small subset of available Android apps.) But it's possible to compare the iPad against some representative Android tablets.

When the Xoom hit the marketplace, Motorola knew that it would have to beat the iPad's specs, so it shipped with a dual core processor, potentially allowing software to run twice as fast as on the iPad, and two built-in cameras, a 5-megapixel camera facing forward and a 2-megapixel camera facing backward toward the user to allow video chatting. This was exciting for the many people who had been annoyed that Apple hadn't gotten around to including a camera in its first iPad. The Xoom's screen, at 10.1 inches, was slightly larger than the iPad's, and its 1280x800 display offered marginally higher graphics resolution. The Xoom comes with 32 gigabytes of memory, but its memory can be expanded using MicroSD (Secure Digital) cards.

But Apple still had the advantage for most users. Why? Because programmers had been developing apps for the iPad for nearly a year before the Xoom appeared and the Apple App Store was bursting with thousands of programs while the Android app store was nearly empty. And Apple quickly struck a new blow in the hardware wars when it replaced the original iPad with the iPad 2. These days many Facebook users have hundreds and possibly thousands of friends. More friends increase the chance that your Facebook account will be hacked – especially if you accept friend requests from people you do not know.

Critical vulnerability found on FACEBOOK

It isn’t entirely unusual that Facebook users receive friend requests from people they do not know. Often, those friend requests are blindly accepted in an effort to grow the friendship base. It seems that especially people with Facebook accounts that are primarily used for marketing purposes are more likely to accept friend requests from people they do not know than the typical Facebook user does.

Such accounts could be hacked easily, and there is no ingenious hacking talent required to do so: You simply need to walk through Facebook’s passwork recovery process with two other Facebook friends of a targeted account.

You can easily gain access to a your friends Facebook account through a collusion approach. You have to use Facebook’s password recovery feature, which is accessible through the “Forgot your password?” link on the Facebook login page.

Once identified the Friend, Facebook suggested to recover the password via the existing email address. However, you can bypass this hurdle by clicking the “No longer have access to these?” link. In that case, Facebook asks for a new email address. In the following step, Facebook presents the security question tied to the account. However, you can also to bypass the question by typing wrong answers three times in a row. After that, Facebook provides a rather surprising way to get your account back – via the support of three friends.

1. First, you select three friends “you trust”. These three friends then receive a code, which is required to change the account password.

2. Select yourself and immediately received a code from Facebook. With those three codes, you can easily change the password for the targeted account.

3. The problem clearly is that three friends you do not really know and cannot trust could potentially gain access to the victim Facebook account – through the standard password recovery feature.

4. To bypass problem mentioned in step 3 SOCIAL ENGINEERING. Create your own 2 more fake profiles and add the victim as a friend on facebook. Now get all the 3 codes and you are done.

NOTE: The targeted account will be locked for 24 hours after this password change and the user’s old email address receives a notification of the password change as well as the names of the three friends who were given the codes. However, if these are friends with fake names, it doesn’t quite matter that you now know their names.

Now if a Facebook user could in fact be in a situation when a Facebook account is not checked within a 24-hour period, particularly since we enjoy to flaunt our activities through Facebook status messages. And if the account is checked frequently, the account depends on Facebook’s response time, which can easily stretch to a number of days.

Bottom line is You don’t expose yourself to people you don’t know.

May be this has been fixed by facebook... but im hoping sooner facebook would make another stupid mistake again..

Top 10 Web 2.0 attack vectors in our world

maps, Writely and MySpace.com are a few examples. The shifting technological landscape is the driving force behind these Web 2.0 applications. On the one hand are Web services that are empowering server-side core technology components and on the other hand are AJAX and Rich Internet Application (RIA) clients that are enhancing client-end interfaces in the browser itself. XML is making a significant impact at both presentation and transport (HTTP/HTTPS) layers. To some extent XML is replacing HTML at the presentation layer while SOAP is becoming the XML-based transport mechanism of choice.

WEB 2.0 Security concerns – Reshaping the industry

This technological transformation is bringing in new security concerns and attack vectors into existence. Yamanner, Samy and Spaceflash type worms are exploiting “client-side” AJAX frameworks, providing new avenues of attack and compromising some of the confidential information. On the “server-side”, XML based Web services are replacing some of the key functionalities and providing distributed application access through Web services interfaces. These remote capabilities to invoke methods over GET, POST or SOAP from the Web browser itself provide new openings to applications. On other side, RIA frameworks running on XML, XUL, Flash, Applets and JavaScripts are adding new possible sets of vectors. RIA, AJAX and Web services are adding new dimensions to Web application security.

Here is the list of 10 attack vectors along with a brief overview of each:

1. Cross-site scripting in AJAX
                  In last few months, several cross-site scripting attacks have been observed, where malicious JavaScript code from a particular Web site gets executed on the victim’s browser thereby compromising information. A recent example is the Yamanner worm that exploited cross-site scripting opportunities in Yahoo mail’s AJAX call. Another recent example is the Samy worm that exploited MySpace.com’s cross-site scripting flaw. AJAX gets executed on the client-side by allowing an incorrectly written script to be exploited by an attacker. The attacker is only required to craft a malicious link to coax unsuspecting users to visit a certain page from their Web browsers. This vulnerability existed in traditional applications as well but AJAX has added a new dimension to it.

2. XML poisoning
                 XML traffic goes back and forth between server and browser in many of the WEB 2.0 applications. Web applications consume XML blocks coming from AJAX clients. It is possible to poison this XML block. Not uncommon is the technique to apply recursive payloads to similar-producing XML nodes multiple times. If the engine’s handling is poor this may result in a denial of services on the server. Many attackers also produce malformed XML documents that can disrupt logic depending on parsing mechanisms in use on the server. There are two types of parsing mechanisms available on the server side – SAX and DOM. This same attack vector is also used with Web services since they consume SOAP messages and SOAP messages are nothing but XML messages. Largescale adaptation of XMLs at the application layer opens up new opportunities to use this new attack vector. XML external entity reference is an XML property which can be manipulated by an attacker. This can lead to arbitrary file or TCP connection openings that can be leveraged by an attacker. XML schema poisoning is another XML poisoning attack vector which can change execution flow. This vulnerability can help an attacker to compromise confidential information.

3. Malicious AJAX code execution
                             AJAX calls are very silent and end-users would not be able to determine whether or not the browser is making silent calls using the XMLHTTPRequest object. When the browser makes an AJAX call to any Web site it replays cookies for each request. This can lead to potential opportunities for compromise. For example, John has logged in to his bank and authenticated on the server. After completing the authentication process he gets a session cookie. His bank’s page has a lot of critical information. Now he browses other pages while still logged in to his bank’s account Web page and lands at an attacker’s Web page. On this page the attacker has written silent AJAX code which makes backend calls to his bank without John’s consent, fetches critical information from the pages and sends this information to the attacker’s Web site. This leads to a security breach and leakage of confidential information.

4. RSS / Atom injection
                                  This is a new WEB 2.0 attack. RSS feeds are common means of sharing information on portals and Web applications. These feeds are consumed by Web applications and sent to the browser on the client-side. One can inject literal JavaScripts into the RSS feeds to generate attacks on the client browser. An end user visits this particular Web site loads the page with the RSS feed and the malicious script – a script that can install software or steal cookies – gets executed. This is a lethal client-side attack. Worse, it can be mutated. With RSS and ATOM feeds becoming integral part of Web applications, it is important to filter out certain characters on the server-side before pushing the data out to the end user.

5. WSDL scanning and enumeration
                                 WSDL (Web Services Definition Language) is an interface to Web services. This file provides key information about technologies, exposed methods, invocation patterns, etc. This is very sensitive information and can help in defining exploitation methods. Unnecessary functions or methods kept open can cause potential disaster for Web services. It is important to protect WSDL file or provide limited access to it. In real case scenarios, it is possible to discover several vulnerabilities using WSDL scanning.

6. Client side validation in AJAX routines
                               WEB 2.0 based applications use AJAX routines to do a lot of work on the client-side,such as client-side validations for data type, content-checking, date fields, etc. Normally, these client-side checks must be backed up by server-side checks as well. Most developers fail to do so; their reasoning being the assumption that validation is taken care of in AJAX routines. It is possible to bypass AJAX-based validations and to make POST or GET requests directly to the application – a major source for input validation based attacks such as SQL injection, LDAP injection, etc. that can compromise a Web application’s key resources. This expands the list of potential attack vectors that attackers can add to their existing arsenal. AJAX routines are

7. Web services routing issues
                                 Web services security protocols have WS-Routing services. WS-Routing allows SOAP messages to travel in specific sequence from various different nodes on the Internet.Often encrypted messages traverse these nodes. A compromise of any of the intermediate nodes results in possible access to the SOAP messages traveling between two end points.This can be a serious security breach for SOAP messages. As Web applications move to adopt the Web services framework, focus shifts to these new protocols and new attack vectors are generated.

8. Parameter manipulation with SOAP
                             Web services consume information and variables from SOAP messages. It is possible to
manipulate these variables. For example, “<id>10</id>” is one of the nodes in SOAP Messages. An attacker can start manipulating this node and try different injections – SQL,
LDAP, XPATH, command shell – and explore possible attack vectors to get a hold of internal machines. Incorrect or insufficient input validation in Web services code leaves the Web services application open to compromise. This is a new available attack vector to target Web applications running with Web services.

9. XPATH injection in SOAP message
                  XPATH is a language for querying XML documents and is similar to SQL statements where we can supply certain information (parameters) and fetch rows from the database. XPATH parsing capabilities are supported by many languages. Web applications consume large XML documents and many times these applications take inputs from the end user and form XPATH statements. These sections of code are vulnerable to XPATH injection. If XPATH injection gets executed successfully, an attacker can bypass authentication mechanisms or cause the loss of confidential information. There are few known flaws in XPATH that can be leverage by an attacker. The only way to block this attack vector is by providing proper input validation before passing values to an XPATH statement.

10. RIA thick client binary manipulation
                           Rich Internet Applications (RIA) use very rich UI features such as Flash, ActiveX Controls or Applets as their primary interfaces to Web applications. There are a few security issues with this framework. One of the major issues is with session management since it is running in browser and sharing same session. At the same time since the entire binary component is downloaded to the client location, an attacker can reverse engineer the binary file and decompile the code. It is possible to patch these binaries and bypass some of the authentication logic contained in the code. This is another interesting attack vector for WEB 2.0 frameworks.

Conclusion
AJAX, RIA and Web services are three important technological vectors for the WEB 2.0
application space. These technologies are promising and bring new equations to the table,
empowering overall effectiveness and efficiency of Web applications. With these new
technologies come new security issues, and ignoring them can lead to big disasters for the
corporate world. In this article, the discussion was restricted to only ten attacks but there
are several other attack vectors as well. Increased WEB 2.0 security awareness, secure
coding practices and secure deployments offer the best defense against these new attack
vectors.

On the “server-side”, XML based Web services are replacing some of the key functionalities and providing distributed application access through Web services interfaces. These remote capabilities to invoke methods over GET, POST or SOAP from the Web browser itself provide new openings to applications. On other side, RIA frameworks running on XML, XUL, Flash, Applets and JavaScripts are adding new possible sets of vectors. RIA, AJAX and Web services are adding new dimensions to Web application security.

Here is the list of 10 attack vectors along with a brief overview of each:

1. Cross-site scripting in AJAX

In last few months, several cross-site scripting attacks have been observed, where malicious JavaScript code from a particular Web site gets executed on the victim’s browser thereby compromising information. A recent example is the Yamanner worm that exploited cross-site scripting opportunities in Yahoo mail’s AJAX call. Another recent example is the Samy worm that exploited MySpace.com’s cross-site scripting flaw. AJAX gets executed on the client-side by allowing an incorrectly written script to be exploited by an attacker. The attacker is only required to craft a malicious link to coax unsuspecting users to visit a certain page from their Web browsers. This vulnerability existed in traditional applications as well but AJAX has added a new dimension to it.

2. XML poisoning

XML traffic goes back and forth between server and browser in many of the WEB 2.0 applications. Web applications consume XML blocks coming from AJAX clients. It is possible to poison this XML block. Not uncommon is the technique to apply recursive payloads to similar-producing XML nodes multiple times. If the engine’s handling is poor this may result in a denial of services on the server. Many attackers also produce malformed XML documents that can disrupt logic depending on parsing mechanisms in use on the server. There are two types of parsing mechanisms available on the server side – SAX and DOM. This same attack vector is also used with Web services since they consume SOAP messages and SOAP messages are nothing but XML messages. Largescale adaptation of XMLs at the application layer opens up new opportunities to use this new attack vector. XML external entity reference is an XML property which can be manipulated by an attacker. This can lead to arbitrary file or TCP connection openings that can be leveraged by an attacker. XML schema poisoning is another XML poisoning attack vector which can change execution flow. This vulnerability can help an attacker to compromise confidential information.

3. Malicious AJAX code execution

AJAX calls are very silent and end-users would not be able to determine whether or not the browser is making silent calls using the XMLHTTPRequest object. When the browser makes an AJAX call to any Web site it replays cookies for each request. This can lead to potential opportunities for compromise. For example, John has logged in to his bank and authenticated on the server. After completing the authentication process he gets a session cookie. His bank’s page has a lot of critical information. Now he browses other pages while still logged in to his bank’s account Web page and lands at an attacker’s Web page. On this page the attacker has written silent AJAX code which makes backend calls to his bank without John’s consent, fetches critical information from the pages and sends this information to the attacker’s Web site. This leads to a security breach and leakage of confidential information.

4. RSS / Atom injection

This is a new WEB 2.0 attack. RSS feeds are common means of sharing information on portals and Web applications. These feeds are consumed by Web applications and sent to the browser on the client-side. One can inject literal JavaScripts into the RSS feeds to generate attacks on the client browser. An end user visits this particular Web site loads the page with the RSS feed and the malicious script – a script that can install software or steal cookies – gets executed. This is a lethal client-side attack. Worse, it can be mutated. With RSS and ATOM feeds becoming integral part of Web applications, it is important to filter out certain characters on the server-side before pushing the data out to the end user.

5. WSDL scanning and enumeration

WSDL (Web Services Definition Language) is an interface to Web services. This file provides key information about technologies, exposed methods, invocation patterns, etc. This is very sensitive information and can help in defining exploitation methods. Unnecessary functions or methods kept open can cause potential disaster for Web services. It is important to protect WSDL file or provide limited access to it. In real case scenarios, it is possible to discover several vulnerabilities using WSDL scanning.

6. Client side validation in AJAX routines

WEB 2.0 based applications use AJAX routines to do a lot of work on the client-side,such as client-side validations for data type, content-checking, date fields, etc. Normally, these client-side checks must be backed up by server-side checks as well. Most developers fail to do so; their reasoning being the assumption that validation is taken care of in AJAX routines. It is possible to bypass AJAX-based validations and to make POST or GET requests directly to the application – a major source for input validation based attacks such as SQL injection, LDAP injection, etc. that can compromise a Web application’s key resources. This expands the list of potential attack vectors that attackers can add to their existing arsenal. AJAX routines are

7. Web services routing issues

Web services security protocols have WS-Routing services. WS-Routing allows SOAP messages to travel in specific sequence from various different nodes on the Internet.Often encrypted messages traverse these nodes. A compromise of any of the intermediate nodes results in possible access to the SOAP messages traveling between two end points.This can be a serious security breach for SOAP messages. As Web applications move to adopt the Web services framework, focus shifts to these new protocols and new attack vectors are generated.

8. Parameter manipulation with SOAP

Web services consume information and variables from SOAP messages. It is possible to

manipulate these variables. For example, “<id>10</id>” is one of the nodes in SOAP Messages. An attacker can start manipulating this node and try different injections – SQL,

LDAP, XPATH, command shell – and explore possible attack vectors to get a hold of internal machines. Incorrect or insufficient input validation in Web services code leaves the Web services application open to compromise. This is a new available attack vector to target Web applications running with Web services.

9. XPATH injection in SOAP message

XPATH is a language for querying XML documents and is similar to SQL statements where we can supply certain information (parameters) and fetch rows from the database. XPATH parsing capabilities are supported by many languages. Web applications consume large XML documents and many times these applications take inputs from the end user and form XPATH statements. These sections of code are vulnerable to XPATH injection. If XPATH injection gets executed successfully, an attacker can bypass authentication mechanisms or cause the loss of confidential information. There are few known flaws in XPATH that can be leverage by an attacker. The only way to block this attack vector is by providing proper input validation before passing values to an XPATH statement.

10. RIA thick client binary manipulation

Rich Internet Applications (RIA) use very rich UI features such as Flash, ActiveX Controls or Applets as their primary interfaces to Web applications. There are a few security issues with this framework. One of the major issues is with session management since it is running in browser and sharing same session. At the same time since the entire binary component is downloaded to the client location, an attacker can reverse engineer the binary file and decompile the code. It is possible to patch these binaries and bypass some of the authentication logic contained in the code. This is another interesting attack vector for WEB 2.0 frameworks.

Conclusion:

AJAX, RIA and Web services are three important technological vectors for the WEB 2.0

application space. These technologies are promising and bring new equations to the table,

empowering overall effectiveness and efficiency of Web applications. With these new

technologies come new security issues, and ignoring them can lead to big disasters for the

corporate world. In this article, the discussion was restricted to only ten attacks but there

are several other attack vectors as well. Increased WEB 2.0 security awareness, secure

coding practices and secure deployments offer the best defense against these new attack

vectors.

Syntax Notes
To be functional, each DOS command must be entered in a particular way: this command entry structure is known as the command's "syntax." The syntax "notation" is a way to reproduce the command syntax in print. For example, you can determine the items that are optional, by looking for information that is printed inside square brackets. The notation [d:], for example, indicates an optional drive designation. The command syntax, on the other hand, is how YOU enter the command to make it work.
Command Syntax Elements
1. Command Name The DOS command name is the name you enter to start the DOS program (a few of the DOS commands can be entered using shortcut names). The DOS command name is always entered first. In this book, the command is usually printed in uppercase letters, but you can enter command names as either lowercase or uppercase or a mix of both. 2. Space Always leave a space after the command name. 3. Drive Designation The drive designation (abbreviated in this book as "d:") is an option for many DOS commands. However, some commands are not related to disk drives and therefore do not require a drive designation. Whenever you enter a DOS command that deals with disk drives and you are already working in the drive in question, you do not have to enter the drive designator. For example, if you are working in drive A (when the DOS prompt A> is showing at the left side of the screen) and you want to use the DIR command to display a directory listing of that same drive, you do not have to enter the drive designation. If you do not enter a drive designation, DOS always assumes you are referring to the drive you are currently working in (sometimes called the "default" drive). 4. A Colon When referring to a drive in a DOS command, you must always follow the drive designator with a colon (:) (this is how DOS recognizes it as a drive designation). 5. Pathname A pathname (path) refers to the path you want DOS to follow in order to act on the DOS command. As described in Chapter 3, it indicates the path from the current directory or subdirectory to the files that are to be acted upon. 6. Filename
A filename is the name of a file stored on disk. As described in Chapter 1, a filename can be of eight or fewer letters or other legal characters. 7. Filename Extension A filename extension can follow the filename to further identify it. The extension follows a period and can be of three or fewer characters. A filename extension is not required. 8. Switches Characters shown in a command syntax that are represented by a letter or number and preceded by a forward slash (for example, "/P") are command options (sometimes known as "switches"). Use of these options activate special operations as part of a DOS command's functions. 9. Brackets Items enclosed in square brackets are optional; in other words, the command will work in its basic form without entering the information contained inside the brackets. 10. Ellipses Ellipses (...) indicate that an item in a command syntax can be repeated as many times as needed. 11. Vertical Bar When items are separated by a vertical bar (|), it means that you enter one of the separated items. For example: ON | OFF means that you can enter either ON or OFF, but not both

Keyboard shortcuts to work on the Windows XP Desktop

win+d :

Minimizes all open Windows and return to a clean desktop. Pressing it again restores the previous state.

arrow keys:

The arrow keys navigate between objects on the desktop.

home and end:

Activates the first object (top left corner) or the last object (bottom right corner) on the desktop.

Enter:

Launches the active object.

shift+f10:

Activates context menu of active object. Basically replaces the right mouse button. Once in the context menu, the arrow keys will navigate you to the desired menu item (or press any letter which shows as underlined); pressing enter activates whatever you want to in the context menu.

F2:

Changes the filename of a desktop icon. Press the arrow keys to go left or right if parts of the old filename should be kept.

Hold ctrl key, navigate with arrow keys and hit space:

On the desktop, pressing and holding the ctrl key enables to highlight multiple items. Once pressed, move around with the arrow keys and press space

for every item which should be highlighted. Hitting space a second time de-selects the item. Once everything is marked as desired, release the ctrl-key.

ctrl+c, ctrl+x, ctrl+v:

ctrl+c for copy, ctrl+x for cut and ctrl+v for paste should be an essential for everyone. If you so happen forget one or the other shortcut on this site, please stick with this most essential keyboard shortcut.

alt+tab, alt+shift+tab:

alt+tab Holding the alt key and continuously press tab to move forward between open applications or folders. Then release the key when the desired object is active to launch it. The same works backwards by adding shift to the shortcut combination: Hold alt and shift and then keep pressing tab moves

backwards between open applications. The direction can be changed in at any time by pressing and releasing shift

win+tab, win+shift+tab then press enter:

Pressing ctrl+tab will navigate between object of the desktop: the desktop itself, the quick-launch bar (if activate) and the notification bar. This will not work when an Application Window is open, simply press win+d before pressing ctrl+tab. Again, the order can be reversed by adding shift to the combination: ctrl+shift+tab moves backwards. This is a good opportunity to access the notification bar without the mouse for example: Press win+d to get to the desktop, then ctrl+shift+tab to go directly to the Notification Bar, arrow left to go to the clock and press enter to open the Windows calendar without

touching the mouse.

that the focus is actually ON the desktop and not on the start button or taskbar. Simply press win+d twice if nothing is happening when pressing the initial letter and try it again.

To launch an application you press enter to activate the respective

many websites (http://ww.smashits.com) stream songs and videos
people believe they cannot be downloaded, quite why i dont know. they kinda think there is no file present to dwnld

once the file is located it can then be retrieved by nettransport
nettransport is able to dwnld any file whether ftp or rtsp etc

1. Download Project URL Snooper 1.02.01 from http://rain66.at.infoseek.co.jp/
2. Install URL Snooper (and WinPcap together)
3. Don't run URL Snooper when it is done installing
4. Restart computer
5. Open Project URL Snooper
6. Click on the General Options Tab
7. user posted image
8. Chose a network adapter
9. Now click on the search tab
10. Click Sniff Network
11. Go to a webpage and you should see some results in the results list
12. If nothing is appearing then chose another network adapter, until one works

13. Now you are ready to begin searching
14. Click the "Hide Non-Streaming URLs" option to hide all http:// references and only show URLs corresponding to streaming audio/video (rtsp, pnm, wma, etc.)
15. Then click Sniff Network
16. Your links should appear as you begin streaming your file
17. Select your desired stream user posted image
18. usually rm file user posted image
19. On the bottom there should be the link which you simply copy user posted image
