Is keeping an exotic pet morally wrong? Many environmentalists would answer yes in a heartbeat, which is a sign they haven't really thought the answer trough. What's morally wrong is the way most exotic pet keepers keep their animals, not ownership itself.

The first argument people use is that animals are happier in the wild. Since there is no way to measure happiness in animals we must measure the various components of happiness for a human (and we are assuming they are the same in animals).

According to Maslow the basics of happiness are food and safety. Neither are guaranteed in the wild where animals periodically undergo starvation and predators and disease lurk everywhere. In captivity they will get optimal diet and complete safety. One point for captivity.

Another argument is that animals belong in the wild where they are truly free. Ignoring the limits of territory and predation lets examine the claim that animals belong in the wild by looking at the very animal that claims that, the human.

Human beings are meant to live in the wild as well, in the African continent. They are definitely not meant to use the Internet, drive, farm, live in houses, or any of the modern commodities. If all animals are happier by doing what they were "meant to" why are activists roaming the virtual world?

That's two points for captivity.

Now let's examine animal welfare and the animal's interest.

Good captivity provides good health care. Animals won't die of minor injuries or small diseases like they do in the wild. They will get every possible treatment. Captive animals live longer and during their golden years have access to physiotherapy and a group of techniques and facilities that improve quality of life.

The main thing going against captivity is lack of enrichment. Using modern standards this is not a problem. Unfortunately most private owners do not provide enough enrichment. Many don't even provide enough housing space or an appropriate diet.

In these circumstances it is wrong to keep exotic, or any, animals. But this is not a problem of captivity, it is a problem of lack of law and enforcement. There should be open standards and tight control of private and public owners.

Furthermore, rescuing animals from private owners is often not the answer. This is becoming a problem with elephants. Uninformed public and activists have recently been involved in "rescuing" elephants from zoos to sanctuaries.

In those zoos the elephants, who were older than their wilder counterparts, had vet care, physiotherapy, special medication for their disease and an exercise program to keep them healthy both physically and mentally.

In the sanctuaries they were rescued to by politicians that got popularity and lead to public consciousness relief they had nothing of the sort. Their diet is often poor for their conditions, they have to roam by themselves instead of meeting proper physician and mental activity standards and the sanctuaries didn't have funds to give them the medication they needed.

Now I ask, what was the best option for the animal, as opposed to some warped moral standard? I will let you do the math.

The simple answer is you get what you pay for, but that doesn't mean that you can' get a great deal that suits your budget and gives you the insurance cover you need. Let me explain.

Basing your choice of pet insurance coverage on price alone is a recipe for disaster. Sure you will get cheap monthly premiums but it is simply false economy because you will end up paying for a policy that fails to provide you with enough to pay your vet bill when you need it.

There are ways to swing the odds in your favor so that your monthly premiums are kept at a minimum while you still enjoy a level of coverage that safeguards you against costly veterinary medical bills.

Step 1/.

The first rule in getting a good value pet health insurance policy is to make sure you get five very important medical conditions included in your policy.

These are a must:

Coverage for Chronic disease
Continual coverage for chronic disease
Coverage for Hereditary/congenital conditions
Cancer Coverage
Coverage for Breed specific conditions

Why do you need these inclusions?

If you do not include these five essentials in your pet insurance plan, you are wasting your money because without them you will not be fully protected.

These pet medical conditions can and probably will affect your pet during its lifetime and each of them is singularly difficult and expensive to treat.

It's the last two I want to focus on for now.

Deductible is the amount of the veterinary bill you must pay before the insurance company starts paying.
Co-Pay is the percentage of covered expenses that you must pay after the deductible is met.

You can raise or lower the amount you pay monthly by adjusting the levels of these two elements. In other words, if you choose a higher deductible or co-pay, you will lower your monthly premium but your out of your pocket expenses for medical treatment will be higher.

On the other hand, a low deductible or co-pay will push up the cost of monthly premiums but your out of your pocket expenses will be reduced.

This is a bit of a balancing act so here's a couple of things to ask yourself that will help you arrive at the right balance that suits your budget and your pet's well being.

Take a moment to think about your pet. How old is he? Does he live indoors or out? Is he a naughty pet that is always getting into mischief? Is the breed susceptible to any hereditary diseases? Is he overweight? Does he have road sense and so on.

By asking yourself these questions you should be able to determine a level of coverage that is affordable, will most likely meet all of your pet's medical needs, and save you money along the way.

The higher the deductible and co-pay, the lower your monthly premiums.

The lower the deductible and co-pay, the higher your monthly premiums.

You are much better off to adjust the deductible and co-pay slightly to bring the premium down, than to remove any of the five important coverage elements mentioned above.

There is one more thing you need to consider: Maximum Payout Structures.

At the high end of the scale, medical costs for serious illness or injury can be as much as 10 or even 20 thousand dollars Since it is impossible to know in advance what injury or illness your pet will suffer, you will want to focus on plans that give you the most flexibility when it comes to Maximum Payouts so you are not left short.

The reticulated python is the world's longest snake, capable of growing up to and over 28 feet long, although they tend to end up somewhere between 10 and 20 feet long on average. They are native to Southeast Asia, where they reside in tropical forests, hanging out in caves, trees, or on the ground. They are named for their interesting and intricate pattern, which resembles netting. The word "reticulate" is generally defined as net-like or netted.

These particular snakes are non-venomous constrictors that eat mammals such as rodents, cats, dogs, and pigs, and sometimes birds such as chickens. There are reported cases of them attacking and killing humans, although this is relatively rare. This does not stop people from keeping them as pets, however.

Reticulated pythons are prized as pets due to their length and beautiful pattern. In fact, their admired skin has gotten them in trouble, as they have often been hunted for their skin, which has been used in items such as boots, belts, wallets, and more.

If you are thinking of getting a reticulated python as a pet, there are a few things that you should consider first. One is its eating habits. While pythons are easy to feed in that they do not need to eat daily and can even go a long time without eating, it is often difficult for animal lovers to feed them and watch them eat, as they eat small, live mammals. A baby should be fed mice and rats, while an adult python may need larger mammals, such as guinea pigs or rabbits. Another thing to consider is fear: do you want a pet capable of attacking and eating you? You also need to be sure you have a decent amount of space to house a python and the right accessories as well. When creating a home for your new pet, you need to find a cage that is appropriate for its size. Be prepared to buy larger cages as your snake grows; too large a cage for a small snake will make it uncomfortable, but a large snake needs plenty of room. Also be sure the cage is secure, well ventilated, and kept reasonably warm. In order to keep the cage warm, a heating pad and/or basking light is in order, as snakes are used to warm environments. The cage needs to be at least 75 degrees to keep the snake happy and healthy.

Reticulated pythons can make lovely pets for those who are willing and capable of taking care of them, so if after reading this you are still interested in them, go for it. Just be sure to keep its ability to grow in mind and make sure you have the proper space to house a snake that can get at least 28 feet long.
