Blog 2 Final Project: Business Plan

According to Phil Breman of About.com, getting starting in the film or television business is one of the hardest things to do, but if you follow certain steps it will not be as difficult, and knowing the right information is key to making the ride less bumpy. (Breman, 2012) For starters you must narrow down the areas of business that you want to enter, because there are so many different careers in the entertainment industry, it can be very overwhelming. Breman states you should know what you are looking for before you start looking. (Breman, 2012) The next steps is to assess your skills, and determine what type of skill this particular job requires in comparison to what you are good at doing. Next you should make a list of places to start looking for jobs, and Breman feels the Internet is a good place to start. He states, “it used to be that the only way to find a job in the biz was through word of mouth, but now most production companies have more work than they can handle. (Breman, 2012) This is where search engines come into play, when looking for entry-level positions in the industry. He suggested the Hollywood Reporter Job Classified and Major Media Company Job boards like Disney, University, NBC, and other networking companies. Next is to prepare a good resume, or employ an agency to do one for you. “Build a solid resume, that will help you get your feet in the door.” (Breman, 2012) Being honest and including all of your accomplishments is key in effective resume writing, and because most people in the entertainment industry have no or little experience when the enter the business, therefore being patient is one of the most important characteristics that you can have. Breman states, to remember the three P’s: stay passionate, persistent, and patient is essential, and it will help dramatically to increase your odds of succeeding in the entertainment industry. (Breman, 2012)

The Coalition Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) is a network of public and private lending organizations that provide funding to individuals or businesses in low-income communities across the country. They have over 950 different representatives in all 50 states that are their promoting development loan funds, community under development banks, community development credit unions, microenterprises lenders, community development corporations, and community development venture capital funds. (CDFI, 2012) Their mission is “to unify national voice of community development financial institutions. Our mission is to encourage fair access to financial resources for America’s undeserved people, and communities.” (CDFI, 2012) Today the 950 public and private organizations are certified by the CDFI funding operations, in the effort of upgrading rural and urban communities. They also get a lot of their money to distribute for the US government, via religious, corporate, individual organizations that help low income people obtain better housing, start or rebuild businesses within their own communities. It states CDFI measures success by focusing on the “double bottom line”, economic gains, and the contributions they make to the local communities. (CDFI, 2012) In the effort to help people and/or businesses to become self-sufficient in their communities, they can also get training, technical assistance services, loans, grants, and etc. The ultimate goal is to rebuild their credit, and their community, get educated, increase jobs, and some the opportunity to become entrepreneurs.

The other website I found very informative was the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) and their mission is “to develop and establish a foundation for sustainable job growth and to rebuild durable regional economics throughout the US.” They use two main economic components, innovation and regional collaboration. “Innovations are the key to global competitiveness, new and/or better jobs, resilient economy, and to attain the national economic goals. EDA encourages initiatives that advance new ideas and create approaches to address rapidly evolving economic conditions.” (EDA, 2012) They offer grants to public and private sectors, as long as they meet certain guidelines that are associated with global competitiveness, create jobs, and other priorities listed below:

Public/ Private Partnership
National Strategic Priorities
Environmentally Sustainable Development

Economically Distressed and Undeserved Communities your idea falls under one of these categories, than you have a good chance of receiving a grant, and/or loan to establish your business. The EDA also offers different opportunities news about federal funding grant opportunities for example:

Expert View On the Value of Business Plans

Experts: Oprah Winfrey & Donald Trump

The two experts that I chose to research for my blog post are Oprah Winfrey & Donald Trump mainly because I admire both of them, have been following both throughout their careers, now on Facebook, Twitter, and because I have listened to them speak on different subjects, I respect their thoughts and opinions.

Oprah Winfrey:

Oprah was not born into a privileged family and had limited support doing some parts of her life. According to the Encyclopedia of World Biography, Oprah had a difficult childhood, because she was born to unmarried parents that soon separated after she was born in 1954. After coming in to a dysfunctional environment, she was left with her grandmother on an isolated farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She showed early signs of being “special” it stated, “ as a child, she played like she was in front of an audience of farm animals and by age 21/2 she was reading. She skipped Kindergarten after writing her teacher a note on the first day of school saying that she belonged in the first grade and after that year she was skipped to the third grade. Excelling early in life, Oprah became a excellent student while living with her father, she started giving speeches at church and at events, she even made $500 to give a speech and right than she knew she wan to get paid to talk. Because Oprah had to move back with her dysfunctional mother to Nashville, she became rebellious, and was abused. But once reunited with her father, where her lifestyle became safe and normal again and because of his strict child rearing methods, it provided guidance, structure, rules, and books. But due to the negative experiences, and impact that her mother put on her, Oprah came to the realization that having a business plan would “force her to consider the what-ifs and tiny cost you might overlook” while putting a business together. Furthermore she stated that a “business plan would force you to see what you need to change to finally start making money with your business.” She considers “a business plan as a living thing because it grows and changes just like we do and the economy.”

Donald Trump:

According to the Encyclopedia of the World Biography, Donald was born into a privileged family in Queens New York, in 1946 he was the forth of five children of Frederick and Mary Macleod Trump. Donald’s parents enrolled him into the New York Military Academy at age thirteen so that he would learn self-discipline, and how to stay focused at an early age in his life. Following his father’s footsteps, into the Building and Real Estate Development business, in the summertime he would work onsite with his father doing construction work and learning the family business. At the military school he excelled academically, athletically, and socially where he became a positive role model for others. He graduated in 1964. Donald than entered Fordham University but transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Finance where he graduated in 1968, with a degree in Economics. After graduating Donald became a big part of the Trump Organization and in 1971 he moved to Manhattan where he began to network with influential people. Trump stated that “stance on business plans are simple: with a business plan there is a direction and focus, not having a business plan, you are bound to fail because there is no focus. A plan gives you direction to know where you are going, what you are doing, and how you will get where you want to be.” He stated in terms of obtaining an investor, its very important to have a good detailed business plan because the investor will want to see it before they agree to invest any money, Donald also stated “without a plan, any entrepreneur would not be able to get their feet off the ground.”

According to Rhonda Abrams author of Successful Business Plan, she states “Investors are sensitive to issues of the industry health, because it is harder to raise money if the industry is facing a crisis”, employing capable management is key also when you are seeking funding because they realize that you can’t run a business totally alone and if you don’t employ experienced, real, flexible, and work well with people team of managers it can cause you business to be unsuccessful. Lastly is having the ability to control money, by having a full understanding of the anticipated cost to start up your business at the beginning in order to eliminate unwanted pressure doing the honeymoon stage of the partnership. (Abrams, 2010)

In closing, each of these people is great examples of successful business owners, and because of their experiences, planning and professional techniques of not deviating from their ultimate goal, they were able to reach the top. Oprah Winfrey and Donald Trump had two totally different starts in life, but due to their level of success, they both have developed businesses plans that have turned into successful businesses. Because of Donald’s drive and determination, focus and direction that he inherited, he was able to associate his business plan to how the military structures the life of a soldier in combat training. He stated, “if there is no business plan there is no focus, and you are bound to fail” which I means, staying focus in life will lead to success. And because Oprah’s experienced heartaches and challenges early on in her life, and she developed her plan around the concept of learning as much as possible, and with experience it is essential to change. Her plan was “ writing a business plan to help stay focused and having the ability consider the what-ifs, tiny cost that you might overlook, and force you to see what you need to change to finally start making money in your business.” In my opinion, Oprah went through major transformations throughout her life and because she realized that if she didn’t force herself to, and didn’t have a plan she would have missed out on some important aspects that needed to be addressed, whereas Donald learned what he needed to know early and stayed on course throughout his life.

According to Sports Business Journal Staff Writer, Eric Fisher states that social media usage has proven its credibility of being an “effective tool to boost fan interaction, forge connections between teams, leagues and their fans, sell tickets, merchandise, and help drive TV viewership.” (Fisher, 2011)

Because social media has become such a broad leveraging approach to a new line of communication with consumers, it will never be considered a “one-size-fit-all” method of pursuing sports properties in order to exceed traditional media strategies. Fisher states that there are 20 top social media tactics that have utilized over the past few years, but the one that I feel is the most creative, is how the Cleveland Indians have took Social Media to a another level by adding a social media suite to their list of communicating with their fans, and consumers. The Indians wanted to do something out of the norm to reach their fans and to relieve the attention off of their challenging season of losses in recent years. So they “opened the social media desk the bleachers of Progressive Fields. Seating 10 outfitted with wireless internet access, that were sponsored by Time Warner Cable, helped to build good will for the club”. Because of the success, the social media suite has acquired a large waiting list that extended for almost the rest of the season. According to Author John Basso, the team’s president Mark Shapiro was in total agreement to the new idea and spoke highly of the idea on his twitter page and Sr. Director, Curtis Danbury for the Indians stated, “This has given us a tangible platform to show our commitment to the social media space. We are creating new brand ambassadors who are then going out and talking about the Indians experiences and are in essence of spreading our message.” (Basso, 2011) Their new social media direction has allowed the Indians to build a “stronger relationship with their fans” (Basso, 2011) and develop a new strategy that has helped to ease the negative media comments, and open the line of communication with their fan base. Their goal is to keep their new program and social media network strong and refreshing by having onsite coverage at every event during their season, for now on.

According to Scott Cendrowski, writer-reporter of CNN Money states “The legendary brand blew up its single-slogan approach and drafted a new playbook for the digital era.” (Cendrowski, 2012) In a highly secured area of the company’s 192-acre office space located in Beaverton Ore, Nike’s team of highly qualified engineers, and marketing executives along side Apple ‘s development team have launched a “New Home of Nike Digital Sports” in 2010. (Cendrowski, 2012) These new marketing gadgets consist of a device that lets the user track their own personal performance level, while participating in their sport of choice. Its called the “Nike+ Running Sensor” which is in the form of a watch, but has a sensor installed, you may purchase the sensor alone, or with an IPod connected w/o the watch, and Nike just added another gadget to the list, which is another high tech piece of technology; it’s called the Fuel Band. This gadget allows the user to monitor their energy output level just by wearing this wristband, while doing their activity.

According to Sir Lucas Leftfoot, Nike’s goal is to get closer to their target market by building new and improved lines of communication via Facebook, twitter, and any other social media avenue, he states “Nike has been running its marketing from a different playbook lately. Rather than the ubiquitous TV and Print Ads of the past, a new focus has been placed on digital marketing. Cendrowski states, “Its part of a bigger broader effort to shift the bulk of Nike’s marketing efforts into the digital realm, and it marks the biggest change in Beaverton since the great one of ‘Just do it’. Nike’s strategy is to eventually eliminate the use of marketing via television commercials and because TV and Print advertising in the U.S. has dropped by 40% in just three years, with a marketing budget still climbing upward to hit a record $2.4 billion last year. (Cendrowski, 2012) And by changing their marketing techniques for advertising to their consumers, using social media networks, and online advertising to reach a broader rim of consumers who will purchase their products, see figures above. Because of the high cost of advertisement, and the additional staff for their new project, Nike projects their expense budget will continue to grow, but so will their revenue. Their logic is to go to their customers instead of them waiting for the customers to come to them. Cendrowski states “its core customer is a 17-year-old who spends 20% more on shoes than his adult counterpart, has given up television to skip across myriads online communities.” (Cendrowski, 2012) Nike feels that the television campaign is old, but the digital marketing era allows brands to market and communicate with their targeted market at a up, closer and personal level like in the yester years. · After perfecting the art of big branding, it’s moving on to a world in which its consumers want to be told less and just do more.

In closing, in my opinion Nike’s New Digital Marketing Era is well off to a good start, and because of their pro qualities of marketing I feel that we have just seen an introduction of the advance level of technology in sports and there is plenty more to come.

Amazing Little Stars in the Making: Sophia Grace & Rosie

Hello Everyone,

I saw this video about 4 month ago, it was on someone page that I was following on Twitter, I was amazed as much now as I was than. But in that footage they was making a home video, as I see Sophia Grace and Rosie have REALLY came a long way and I see why. Sophia is a star in the making, and little Rosie make the show very even better Lol. On the Ellen show they really out did themselves they had approx. 952,000 viewers of this video!!! They optimize their searches by using Sophia Grace & Rosie as the keywords and all kinds of stuff pops up. Who would have thought when they start to run the video camera in their home living room that all of this magic would come about. They even got to sing, dance, and shop with Nicki Minaj and most likely a contract from somewhere will be followering in the very near future. Because little Sophia is so Talented, once that video hit the airwaves, and at the time Nicki song was so popular a #1 hit, it was all over everybody's social media site. Music executives were amazed because that where I first got a glimps at it. Within about 3 to 4 months she/ they was stars. That's Showbiz!!!!!

I've only have had 15 visitors, 102 pageviews at 6.80, average time on site 10:26, new visits 46.67. Direct Traffic 40%, Referring Sites 40%, Search Engines 20%.

In my opinion, I need to start developing new traffic by making more social media friends to follow me to my different sites. Because I am still learning how to work these features, I feel I still have a lot to learn. My strengths are I am eager to learn, Im developing a social media presence, and learning new ways to promote my sites at full sail. Weaknesses, these concepts are confusing, because there are so many, I am still learning which social media sites are the best ones to go on, and 4 weeks are not enough time to become a pro in digital marketing. I must study, and keep learning the most productive way to market myself.

All-Star Weekend 2012

The weekend of February 24^th thru 26^th marks the 20-year anniversary of the All-Star Weekend http://www.allstarnba.es/editions/2012.htm event taking place in Orlando Florida in 1992. Players and fans from all over the world will travel to Orlando, Florida to watch the best of the best basketball players compete against one another of the last time of this season. This year after the final voting was calculated, on who would represent the East and the West during the final game on Sunday February 26, 2012. The West Team: Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, and Andrew Bynum. The East Team: Dwight Howard, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, and LeBron James, these will be the starters for each side. During the weekend there will be other contest going on like The Rookie Challenge, The Shooting Star Contest, The Celebrity Game, 2 Ball Contest, Hoop-It-Up Tournament, The Slam Dunk Contest, The Three Point Contest, The Horse Contest, and the Final event on Sunday the NBA All Star Game. All three days will be full of lights camera action and whether or not you are a baller, there will be plenty of opportunities to meet and greet, pass-out your business cards, and network with others in the entertainment industry. In my opinion, opportunities comes at the strangest times and places, and if you are in the right place at the right time your chances of landing an opportunity to move closer to your professional are very high. In concluding, I am traveling to Orlando, Florida for the All-Star Weekend Events, and I feel that it will be worth the effort, so I can meet others in the industry, see old friends, and watch some of my favorite players compete against each other for the last time during this season. Today Digital technology has come a very long way. According to Dmitriy Gamarnik, author of Best Uses of Digital Sports Technology Today, “at first the sports universe was hesitant but now they have embraced it with open arms. In this article I would like to tip my cap to the impressive and custom ways teams and leagues have incorporated technology in sports.” The Tampa Bay Buccaneers for example traded in their oversized play book for a in improved method of todays technology, all the players was handed a iPad2 to study their plays, as well as the ability to watch films of games, team meeting material, and etc. This made everyone job a little easier, and gave the players a new gadget to “play with”. According to Yahoo News, the NBA New Jersey Knicks Basketball team has partnered up with Alpari, LLC (US). Alpari is a global provider of online foreign exchange trading services. On January 6, 2012 they announced that Alpari will be one of the teams new sponsors, and their prominent brand will be located baseline, on basket pads, LED signage, courtside, and throughout the Knicks website, which is located at www.njnets.com and any other social media sites that the team is affiliated with. According to the article, this marketing venture is the third- US based professional sports team affiliation that Alpari has been the sponsor of, and according to Daniel Skouronski, CEO of Alpari, he is very excited about the partnership with the Knicks, and their first season of sponsoring them and he plans to continue for the next season once they move to Brooklyn Barclay Center for the 2012- 2013 season. Alpari LLC is a very successful and established Commodity Future Trading Company that has been in business since 1996, and they’re headquartered is based in the business district of New York City. According to the New York Times, on November 24, 2011 author Ken Belson stated that in spite of Tiger Woods recent negative media exposure concerning his “marital infidelities” in 2009 that caused him to lose millions of dollars in endorsement deals that were snatched away because of his negative image, the once #1 golfer is now ranked somewhere in the top 100 place. But because he is gradually improving his game, and he helped the United States win the Presidents Cup in Australia last year, is showing signs that Woods is working hard to repair his image. Belson stated that “Rolex the watchmaker, and Fuse Science, which is a sports nutrition start-up company" is confident that Woods is ready to represent their brands with honor and respect; they signed him to sponsorship deals. These deals are only a small fraction of what Woods lose when he was representing brands like Accenture, AT&T, Gatorade, Gillette, and other well-known brands names. As part of the deal, Wood was required to put “Fuse Science” name on his golf bag during the Chevron World Challenge, and they would give him stock in the company. Because Woods is in the rebuilding stage of his career, and his multi-million dollar salary status, which is improving everyday, by gaining new sponsorship along with the ones that stuck with him during his fall, like Nike, EA Sports and a few others, today his salary is nothing in comparison to a few years ago. But he is still considered the highest paid athlete in the world. And to show that he is still on top, Rolex resigned him for the second time, and after he left them in 2002 to represent another watchmaker “Tag Heuer” until last summer when their contract ended. According to experts on sponsorship strategy, when a athlete or celeb signs a sponsorship deal, and take “stake” in the company by obtaining stock, they stand to profit more in the long run when or if the start-up company is sold to a bigger, more popular company for example, when Vitamin Water was sold to Coca-Cola and David Wright, the third baseman for the Mets already had a deal in place, this could very well happen to Woods by getting in at ground floor with Fuse Science, he stands to profit more in the long run. To secure Wood’s deal even more, Fuse Science signed a few more athletes like Arian Foster, Ronde Barber, and David Ortiz to sponsorship deals, which will “insulate” Woods success within the company’s brand marketing. It stated that Wood was very excited about his new deal, because after consulting with his team of experts, the product is sure to grow in the environment of sports/health, and he wants to focus on promoting it from the start. It also stated that he wasn’t going to hurry and sign another deal to be able to focus on Fuse Science, which can generate more money if he starts to win again in golf, or if /when the company is sold to a bigger company.

Increased Restriction on Covering Sports Events

According to John Seldenberg of Suite 101, Sporting leagues here in the US are attempting to change the way the media is covering their events. Recently there has been new restrictions added by the league and amateur sports teams regarding games coverage, information techniques and photographing. The league is “attempting to control what is published, and/or posted to web sites and in newspapers” . The league is using the tool of credentialing individuals and organizations that want to attend and cover their events. In the effect to achieve this, professional leagues are monopolizing news that is gathered doing their events. Seldenberg used the example of how the Academy Award has been controlling whose covers their annual event by monitoring who pictures are taken, and when it is done. The league’s main objective is to be able to control the product that comes out of sports coverage for example: training camps, press conferences, and practices are the 3 other areas that the league want to gain limitations on what the media exposes in addition to the events it self. Media Attorney Kevin Goldberg gave a statement briefing the press on how the NFL only concern is the NFL itself and the channel that they are in contracts with to cover events. Therefore the leagues are making every possible effort to keep video footage, of events limited to their own network channels. In my opinion this is a very good idea for the league and the broadcasting station, because they are in partnership with these television stations like Fox and ESPN are getting paid millions and I feel both parties involved has the right to control how and what information is floating around. According to Seldenberg, in the New York Times on April 21, 2008 there was a article on sports blogging which stated, “League officials ague that too much video and audio coverage in news papers and websites could infringe on right holders- the broadcasters who pay millions of dollars to carry live game, and the league and teams have their own website, carrying news accounts and footage. “ Because news coverage is such a rapidly moving way of communicating events, news coverage has no value beyond 72 hours according to professional baseball officials, and the NFL feels there news has a 24-hour value. Even colleges are adding new restrictions to how is allowed to cover their news by making them apply for sports media credentials and also limiting the use of photos, videos, web sites and bloggers. In the effort to limit these restrictions, some of the well known news publication groups like the American Society of News Editors, the Associated Press Sports Editors, Online News Association, Radio- Television News Directors Association recently protested decisions made by the Big Ten Conference, “To make work produced as part of game coverage the property of the Conference”. The different leagues, colleges, are battling with the media over access and copyright material from games, requesting that changes be made in federal law. And because of the limits professional leagues, and colleges are trying to enforce, making the press have credentials, to create entrance barriers, which is set out to relinquish the “media’s” legal rights. According to Kevin Goldberg, who specialize in First Amendment copyrights and trademark issues, related to newspapers, and internet publishing feels that the leagues are making their own rules by asking those who cover their events to give up their copyrights rights in order to be able to cover their (the teams) game or event. He states, “The First Amendment rules essentially don’t apply.” Goldberg pointed out that there is no copyright on the actual playing of a game of sports because they are unscripted events that occur during real time. “ Therefore, what the leagues and colleges are doing is unconstitutional. In a case the NBA v. Motorola, because Sports Team Analysis and Tracking Systems Inc. hired individuals to communicate information during various NBA games for gambling and fantasy sports purposes, using Motorola pagers to relay the information, the NBA filed a lawsuit claiming the actions violated rights to publicity and its copyrights, heard in the US District Court, for the Southern District of New York, it was decided when Motorola appeal that the NBA had no copyright rights to this claim, therefore Motorola won the appeal stating that “there is no underlying script that exist in any game, and that information about issues were public accessibility and it did not involve any misappropriation of broadcasting the NBA’s information . Still yet the leagues are insisting they have copyright rights to video footage, photos, and stories regarding their events. They are granting licenses to selected media to cover their games, take pictures, and interview selected athletes but only under their restrictions and terms. Goldberg is working with the different press associations to try and stop the leagues and colleges from controlling audio and/or video coverage at their events, and the American Society of News Editors and other organizations are trying to make the proper federal law changes for example: Amending the Internal Revenue Code, to require access to events to any press member, if the stadium is receiving public funding. In concluding because the leagues and colleges have found ways to capitalize on making millions of dollars with the different broadcasting companies, to cover their events, they are going with the highest bid. Unless the different media associations keep finding loopholes in the leagues new rules and restrictions, they are trying to enforce, they will soon be working for the leagues, under very strict terms and conditions or having to bid high like the broadcasting companies. The media has been covering game, and event stories, for the public for many years and because of new ways of making money has come into play; the leagues and colleges feel that they can make their own rules. My question is can they, are can they not, because it seems like they already have, with the blessing of the lawmakers.

Refs Charges NBA with Unfair Labor Practices

According to Adrian Wojnarouski of Yahoo! Sports, the National Basketball Referee’s Association recently filled charges with the National Labor Relations Board, stating the NBA violated federal laws when they engaged in unfair labor practices. They outlined the charges by sending several memos to the 60 NBA’s referees saying “the league refused to negotiate with the union concerning non-collective bargaining agreements which expires September 1, 2011. But because the league was involved in a major labor battle with the players, and trying to get the matters resolved before the lockout deadline, they focused only on those matters. The referees union than hired an experience labor, employment attorney named Lee Seham to communicate on behalf of the refs from that point forward. Because when Seham and the NBA met to discuss the matters on three different occasions, and nothing was resolved, the referee association decided to move forward with their claims and complaints. Seham outlined the issues that the Refs had and they were. In the effort to find a non-economic dealing point for all parties involved to agree on, and they are as followed:

A. Weight and fitness restrictions

B. Travel issues

C. Anti-discrimination bases on race, sex, and union activity

D. The league’s ability to terminate a referee without cause- Is a act of bad faith

E. Alleged “obscene expression” by commissioner David Stem at the Union negotiation meeting held January 24, 2011. It stated: “ One of the league’s negotiators, got angry when the union’s attorney used” standard language found in many collective bargaining agreements” on discrimination. He became hostile, and used obscene expressions and the negotiator refused to delete the remarks from the meeting notes, and the negotiator left the room abruptly.

The Refs union felt that recently, the commissioner has been acting unprofessional and disrespectful since 2009, during union talks. The decision will be for the National Labor Relation Board to decide if the NBA has violated any federal laws. In response the union requested the NBA to propose a completely new deals. There wasn’t any response on the old/new deal being present by the NBA prior to September deadlines. More up-to-date according to Kelly Dwyer of Yahoo! Sports stated that the Refs and NBA finalize a new deal September 15, 2011 but not knowing the details of the deal, just that it was an agreement for five years and both parties were in agreement to the terms. In my opinion, this was a very important collective bargaining agreement in sports, because without Refs calling game plays correctly, the NBA season will be at risk of losing its creditability. Dwyer stated that in 1995-96 season, because replacement referees were used after their lockout, “a whole lot of calls went wrong”. I feel the league doesn’t have room for anymore-negative press time. In conclusion, because of the enormous responsibility of Referees, its essential that their concerns and needs are met in the highest level of priority and in order for the NBA to proceed without further delay due to the lockout issues, they made a very smart decision to quickly come to a new collective bargaining agreement before the season begins.

“Dodgers Owner Frank McCourt and Fox TV Rights Battle”

According to Bill Shakin of the Los Angeles Times, states “The Dodgers believe sale of TV Rights now could lead to higher bids for the team. Fox which holds Dodgers television, deal through 2013 has sued to uphold exclusive negotiating rights.” At first McCourt had doubts about selling the Dodgers Empire because he said that he wanted to give it to his son, but because of the amount of money he has to pay in his divorce settlement, he has decided to continue on with the process of filing bankruptcy, and make good faith on his obligations. In November, McCourt proceeded with the bankruptcy due to the high settlement amount that he must pay his ex-wife Jamie McCourt in their divorce settlement, she has been awarded $131 million and he must pay by April 30^,2012. The battle is currently with Fox because they have a contract that upholds “exclusive negotiation rights” until 2013 when their contract expires. Dodger and McCourt’s want to sell the rights now, along with his other Dodger related investments. He feels that since the television rights are a part of the 3 connected investments: The Dodger’s team and the Dodger Stadium would be one deal, the parking lots surrounding the stadium is the second deal, and the television rights would be the third deal. The issue is that if future pricing is not included in the bidding of the sale, than the new owner will be able to negotiate a new deal on the rights in a year and it could exceed the price that he or she have to pay now. According to Shakin, in June the Commissioner of baseball Bud Selig rejected a proposed contract between the Dodgers and Fox, in which McCourt valued at 3 billion and that amount will most likely be the starting bid between Time Warner and Fox in 2013. In my opinion, I totally understand McCourt’s concerns of wanting to make sure the value of all his investments are priced accordingly before potential buyers of the Dodgers take place. But I also understand Foxes claim against not wanting to start any type of negotiation before their rights expire. Because McCourt is having to sell the entire package anyway, they feel they don’t owe him any favors. Furthermore, the only logical answer to this negotiation issue is for the courts to decide, and I feel that it would be fair to use the June’s proposal amount of $3B as the future value of the television rights that Fox holds currently and it should be used in the sale of the Dodgers 3 package deal that must be completed by April 30 2012.

Trademarking Boise State's Football Field

“Trademarking Boise State’s Football Field"

According to Blackbook Legal Blog, the issue was that Boise state Broncos wanted to obtain their “signature blue football field and symbol color”. Because the University of New Haven restated their football program recently after shutting it down for 5 years, added a also blue turf. Boise than decided they wanted to claim the color, and they applied for a trademarking for the color blue so that know one else could use it without their permission. Boise felt that because they have used the color for so long on their field and for their team mascot, since 1986 it stated:

“The blue field has been an iconic symbol for Boise State University and Boise. It is recognized near and far as the home of Broncos. We consider the blue turf to be part of our identity, and we place great value on the uniqueness.” According to Logo Mark, on September 19, 2008 Boise University filed for their Logo- the blue field turf and the horse head to be trademark, it was filed by Attorney Brad Frazer, with Hawley Troxell Ennis Hawley, LLC. In April of this year, (2011) Bois State University was granted the exclusive right to the blue turf field, and the horse head symbol. In my opinion Boise State did exactly what they was suppose to do. Because they had built a great spirit, recognition, honor, and respect for having the blue turf, it became a part of their school tradition and should been given the rights to the color before someone else did it. And since New Haven, just came back into existence after 5 years, they should have preference over Boise’s symbol of tradition. In closing I feel schools and businesses are built on traditions, symbols, and colors and if they don’t have the rights to build them they won’t have anything to carryon into their history.

The Orlando Magic is my favorite Professional Basketball Team. Because I lived in Orlando for a few years, I got to experience them hands-on by attending most of their games, events, and became friends with a few of their players. During the time I lived in Orlando, the most popular players were Penny Hardaway, Nick Anderson, Bo Jackson, and Shaq had just left to go to the Lakers. Because I only stayed in Orlando for two years, I lost contact with the team and their new accomplishments, until recent years of “Dwight Howard.” Dwight is my favorite player now, and in my quest to reconnect with the Magic, I feel that its is my duty as a Sport Management major and a fan, to conduct research of their Background/ History, Business Model, Current Major Positions/Employment Opportunities, Community Involvements, Current Events and News, and any other information that will give me a better understanding of how they operate, so I will have completed knowledge of the business, and not just the sport.

Background/ History

According to ACE Sports Betting, the Orlando Magic joined the NBA in the 1989-90 season. They rapidly moved up to competitor’s status quickly, and after drafting Shaquille O’Neal in 1992, which allowed them to move in the spotlight as one of the best teams in NBA around. According to ACE, Jim Hewitt a local banker/developer in Orlando had a vision of forming a popular NBA team in Orlando, four years later before it actually happened. Hewitt joined partnership with the GM of the Philadelphia 76ers, Pat Williams to proceed with his great endeavor. With both parties in sync Hewitt started to market the idea with the locals, and started selling the Orlando Magic’s tee shirt, caps, and persuaded everyone to make the initial down payment of $100 to reserve their season package for the first season. This effort was to show the National Basketball Association that they had central Florida’s permission to move forward with the making of the Orlando Magic Basketball Team. Hewitt than teamed up with four other investors and invested $100k each to the cause, and to be considered for one of the expansion teams, with the NBA. On April 22, 1987 the NBA Board of Governors voted to allow four new teams to be added to the franchise, and in the 1988-89 season they voted in Charlotte and Miami, and in the 1989-90 season they voted in Orlando, and Minnesota. All teams had to pay 32.5 million as the fee for admission, and Magic did. Moving forward to form the Orlando Magic team, Hewitt and William selected Matt Guokas as the team’s first coach; he had played in the NBA back in 1966 until 1976. He retired and became a broadcaster for the 76ers, and than went on to be their assistant coach to Billy Cunningham, and after Cunningham retired, Guokas became head coach for the team. In 1989 Magic’s first line-up team, in the NBA Expansion Draft pick was Reggie Theus, Scott Skiles, Terry Catedge, Sam Vincent, Otis Smith, Jerry Reynolds, and a 11^th overall pick out of the University of Illinois, a forward-guard Nick Anderson. The first season started November 4, 1989, which was a sell-out event against the New Jersey Nets. That first month of playing in the league, Magic’s record was 7-7. As the new kids on the block, Magic was known as the “leagues most prolific offensive teams in the 1989-90 season, and continue to sell-out every home game throughout the entire season. Magic continue to get better by adding new and more experienced players like Dennis Scott from Georgia Tech, in the next season to help move up the ranks of NBA balling. There third season, 92-93 Magic drafted Shaquille O’Neal, which everyone considered the most important day in franchise history. The next season, they added a No. 1 draft pick to the roster Penney Hardaway, now Magic was equipped, the went on to win all 50 games that year, and continued on to the playoffs. Because Shaq and Penney was the main attraction in NBA, they received great exposure by getting endorsements, commercial, movie deals, etc. Both became a household name. But because of Shaq’s size 7-1, 301 lbs. and his aggressive playing nature he went on to having a very positive career with Magic. Of the four expansion teams that came into the league, Magic has been the most successful in terms of winning percentage. The entire Magic franchise joined forces to take the Orlando Magic to an elite status in professional basketball, leading up to today’s most current baller Dwight Howard. Over Magic’s 20year career high they have changed coaches, staff, and players but they have always stayed unified, and continued their record as a positive, elite professional team in NBA.

Community Involvements

NBA.com- Orlando Magic states that they contribute community services in areas of community, philanthropy, and diversity. “They are committed to helping children reach their full potential by investing their resources in areas of education, the arts, health, and wellness. They reach out to over 75,000 children yearly, and that’s not counting the 5,000 plus hours of community service that is provided by the players, coaching staff, where they make personal appearances to community events. According to the Orlando Sentinel, some of the Orlando Magic full-time staff members visited 65 Orange County Schools on November 16, 2011 to promote the county’s “Teach-in” day. Some of Magic’s executives that participated were President Alex Martin, Vice President of Community Relations/ Government Affairs Linda Landman Gonzalez, Coach Stan Van Gundy, President of Basketball Operations Otis Smith and the whole coaching staff visited Jones High School.

Because of the NBA Lock-out, Orlando Magic players stand to loss millions of dollars if the 2011-12 season does not start soon. According to the Sentinel, “The Magic, their $75-million payroll second only to the Lakers’ $91 million, will feel the pinch or the punch if the season is entirely lost.”

Magic salaries for 2011-12: (according to Hoopshype website):

Gilbert Arenas — $19.2 million. You might feel he owes the Magic a rebate anyway.

Dwight Howard — $17.8 million. He’ll make up some doing commercials…maybe in L.A.

Hedo Turkoglu — $10.6 million. That’s a lot of lira in Turkey.

Jameer Nelson — $7.3 million. Jameer’s reckless on the court, not with finances.

J.J. Redick — $6.5 million. Invested a good portion of his big deal earlier.

Brandon Bass — $4 million. Never dreamed he’d be a millionaire.

Chris Duhon — $3.4 million. Nice living interrupted as a back-up PG.

Quentin Richardson — $2.4 million. Might have to watch what he spends at tattoo parlor.

Ryan Anderson — $2.2 million. Still on rookie deal, he’ll be affected by new CBA.

Daniel Orton — $ 1.1 million. Couldn’t make this much at Kentucky … Could he?

Orlando Magic president tells fans: 'We continue to share your frustration'

On November 17^th Josh Robbin’s of the Orlando Sentinel states below that the President of the Orlando Magic reached out to the Magic fans on any unanswered questions, or concerns and to inform them on any updates concerning the Lockout. It states:

Here is the letter for your perusal:

Our fans are our most important assets as without you the game would not be the same. We continue to share your frustration and we understand the impact this has had on you, and all of our fans, our employees and those who work in the Amway Center. We recognize that without you there would be no NBA, and we do not take your support for granted.

We remain committed to keeping you informed as developments unfold with the current work stoppage. Your patience, loyalty and support are truly appreciated during this time.

On Monday, union leaders rejected the NBA’s latest proposal. We believe the proposal was fair and addressed many of the players’ concerns, and we regret that a new agreement has not been reached. In light of these developments, all regular season games through December 15, 2011 have been cancelled.

Everything the NBA is doing in this process is in the best interests of the game – to ensure better competition, league stability and the long-term growth of our game.

As always, we’ll continue to keep you informed throughout this process, and we’ll remain available to answer any questions you may have. Thank you again for your continued support.

In closing I really miss the Orlando Magic, and hopefully the will return to sports soon. Because of their great team spirit, love for the fans and community they have developed an organization that sells out arena’s and continuously stock players that breaks records. There old fashion way of doing business, keep them high on the charts of professional organizations for example their Community Service, Philanthropy, Diversity and hundreds of organizations that they support spreads Magic throughout the world. Researching the Orlando Magic has help me to understand why they are my favorite Professional Basketball Team.

Because the US is experiencing an economical hardship due to several different

reasons, the sporting industry has, is , and will have to deal with the challenging economical climates. According to the article Economic Research, “Sports Still Draw Fans Despite Recession” states that the south is more supportive of the colleges and professional teams than other places, which is the reason sales of tickets, merchandise, and other revenue producing entities are still on the rise. According to the article, “Five of the top 10 revenue producers in college football in the 2007-08 academic year were Southern schools: Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Alabama, and LSU which brought in a combined $303 million, according to Street & Smith Sport Business Journal. Because of the unconditional love for the teams, fans find resources on a regular basis to go and watch their favorite players perform which allows television networks and teams to make a huge profit by agreeing on substantial television contracts. But others in the industry are having to readjust to the economical changes of fans not spending their hard earned money on sporting events anymore. This is causing the television industry to create new ways of making money on the televised events. Economic Research states “ESPN and CBS amid a severe recession earlier this year and agreed to pay the Southern Conference SEC- home of the top five schools listed above , and seven others $3 billion to broadcast mainly football games over the next 15 years”. Creative bargaining is a must in these pressing times, and those who drag their feet in coming up with other ways to generate money will eventually become powerless, with having to lay off and close down their businesses, in this multibillion dollar industry. Every sport is feeling the crunch but the larger organizations are keeping afloat with only a small decline in sales and layoffs. Smaller teams or less popular are being eliminated completely. For example, tennis teams at schools located in Louisiana and even the University of New Orleans have discussed dropping athletics all together due to the economical hardships. On the professional level, Arena Football in Atlanta, New Orleans, Orlando, and Tampa Bay shut down in 2009, leaving only a few teams to compete. The list goes on and on concerning how our sports industry is being effected by negative change. In my opinion, in other for the industry to whether the storm of this recession, sports officials must join together to operate as a one-business entity in order to survive. For example on a college level, athletic departments must get involve in their communities, so that their fan will feel appreciated and want to support their schools. Also the bigger schools need to carry the load of the smaller schools during these hard-times and share some of the money that they are receiving from their great accomplishments. On a professional level, teams need to stop fighting over money, because it’s making their fans feel differently about supporting them. They are making billions of dollars and the greed is causing them to lose focus of what’s important, which is their fan. They need to also be more involved in their community, by having fundraisers for varies needy organizations, and fan appreciation events on a regular basis. These efforts will bring in positive media exposure, which will make fans feel like they want to spend their hard earned money on supporting their team. Furthermore teams need to cut back on giving extra money out when they really don’t have to. There is still a lots of money being generated among these teams but if everyone don’t band together as a whole team, will cause everyone to suffer.

Biggest Sports Business Story Of the Past Decade

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Being a true football fan I can say that the New England Patriots is truly the Team of the Decade. In the last decade they won three championship titles, which put them in a class of their own. Having the opportunity to watch the game live in Houston Texas in February 2004, was something very special to be a part of, there's no doubt that they are a major league team with major league players. The event in 2002 Patriots 20, Rams 17, 2004 Patriots 32, Panthers 29 and 2005 Patriots 24, Eagles 21, plus the others victories have made them one of the biggest sport team in history today. In my opinion the Patriots are the best team in the NFL, because of their style and techniques they use to overcome their opponents. Led by Tom Brady, the MVP winner two out of three years, exhibit leadership qualities and skills on and off the field which was the reason for his 15 straight games win and the Super Bowl trophy and ring in 2004. According to Dave Goldberg of the associated press, stated “for a contest that was scoreless for a record 27 minutes this game was one of the all-time offensive shows between two of the NFL’s best defenses” and by pairing up Tom Brady and Adam Vinateri produced mega wins all three times in NFL history. According to Michael Cohen of the Bleacher Report, states “They became the model franchise in the NFL, preaching perfection and persistence; anything but victory was not an option for the Patriots during their decade-long run of success”. I’m laying it out there, because of the recent negative activity surrounding the National Football League, fans could use some skillfulness from a team that, as they say, gives you your money worth! This message is to the New England Patriots and I feel that I can speak for ALL true fans of a good game of Football, NEP we are ready for some football!

The person that I choose to enter into my blog post is a heavy hitter in the music industry, DJ/Producer John Hitta out of Miami, Florida. Knowing DJ Hitta for only a short time, I can professionally say that he is highly affiliated with the music industry and his role as a DJ for 99.1 JAMZ and a producer that works with several successful people in the industry like May Bach Music, May Bach Latino, Slip N Slide, ICON Music, LIFE ENT, ALL Star Management and he recently signed with the WuTang Clan to name a few. His honest, humble, professional demeanor and natural appreciation for his supporters has helped him to build lasting relationship thus far. When interviewing DJ Hitta, he expressed that the most important part of negotiating a business deal is to make sure you maintain your professionalism in order to achieve your ultimate goals. He stated that his role as a professional, producer, and entrepreneur, and DJ requires him to wear several different hats, while still maintaining his ethical values and direction. Furthermore, he feels that in order to reach “super production status” in the industry, you must be willing to sacrifice your personal time, sometimes money, to market, network endlessly and develop a strong autonomy of business relationships, by learning quickly the do’s and don’t of the business. Also who is with you and who is not. John feels that his success is owed to making the right decisions in order to gain his leverage and power, and by offering services that his clients need. He wins in this business basically because he make it a habit to gets paid on the front as well as the back end of business transactions, which makes it essential to have a good attorney on staff, as well as knowing legal policies and procedures too. "Money, Money, Money"

Here we go again, now the National Basketball Association (NBA) players, and team owners are fighting over money, like the NFL. According to Sports Business, the issue is that team owners/ management want a cap on how much money players can make while in the league, regardless to how good they perform. The NBA management propose a cap on players pay and “implement a $50 million cost- cutting plan in order to balance their books.” Of course players, are not in agreeance with their proposal because the owners want all revenue split 50/50 between them and the players. According to the article, the players counter offered with 54.3% reducing their 57% that they have been getting. This proposal will increase owner’s revenue to $100 million more per year, than they already get. Negotiations are still being conducted. Several players are already looking into going overseas to play because there is No Cap on salaries over there. Deron Williams has already committed to an overseas club, in order to proceed with his career, while dispute is still going on here in the states. Because this is a lockout, and training camps are supposed to begin in October, it is unlikely that the season will begin on time. Which will cause a problem for the 2012 NBA Draft because owners and players are nowhere close to solving their lockout issues, according to Jeff Chase of the Bleacher Report. “If the NBA gets things back on track before the 2012/2013 season, it is questionable how the draft will be handled.” Because in the past, teams with the worst record gets to pick the best players first, in order to make their team better next season, but if games are delayed, and no decisions are made on the best and worst teams by mid season, after playing 50 games, than it will be impossible for a “fair” pick in the upcoming draft. This will cause some teams to end up with too many good players and others with none. Chase feels that the NBA should eliminate the 2012 Draft if the lockout doesn’t end soon. This will also be unfortunate for college players that plan to be drafted because they will have to maybe wait until next year. But they also have the option to go overseas and play.

PepsiCo and NFL Renew Sponsorship Deal

According to Yahoo Finance, the NFL and Pepsi Co Inc. “renewed” their contract yesterday, for the popular brand name of many: Gatorade, Tropicana, Pepsi, Frito-Lay, and Quaker Oaks to partner up with the league, once again for another 10 years as their official marketing partner. According to sources, Pepsi plans to spend roughly $90M a year to have exclusive rights to marketing, selling and promoting ties with the NFL. In addition to the day to day rights, included in the contract was that Gatorade will continue to be the “drink” featured at the games, events, and sidelines for the pro’s and their millions of fans. Another perk is that Frito-Lay snacks will be promoting at big events like the super bowl for the length of the contract. In my opinion, Pepsi Co is a great product I grew up on it. And they are still keeping up with a major player like the NFL. This contract will help them to keep their business flowing smoothly while we overcome these hard economically issues. Needless to say, everyone is feeling the stress of how far money goes right now, but some way some how, sports fans still support their teams and enjoy themselves while there. This is a good look for Pepsi and they are truly a company that puts their money where their mouth is, because they will be spending an estimate of $1B over the term of their contract, but they are not new to the game, they have been a sponsor for the NFL for over the last 28 years. And the NFL will profit about $1B over the next 10 years just for allowing a vendor to advertise and sell their products during their events. In essence, both companies are big $$ businesses, and its mainly because of their reputation in their industry. I Love America!

The University Of Miami Football Scandal

In recent news, that literally hit close to home, because of my recent relocation to the beautiful city of Miami Florida. I found it very shocking hearing about the scandal associated with The University of Miami football team players, and how so much money exchanged hands over the recent years. In my opinion, it’s a total injustice that those young men already get a “free ride” to a major university, and now exposed that they were given millions of dollars with of gifts, and money in addition. Don’t get me wrong, I totally feel that athletes are very special people, to be able to disciple themselves in order to reach the level in sports that some of them do, but is all that really necessary for them to be happy and perform to the best of their ability? Aren’t they suppose to be playing the games that they “love” and aren’t they suppose to be scholars that receive a prize of recognition, exposure, and free education, meals, books, etc. for their hard work on the field, representing their school enough? My biggest problem is that the University of Miami isn’t the only school that has, is, and will do the same thing to “motivate” their players. This is a major problem, and the NCAA needs to address it now! According to Yahoo Sports, a booster name Nevin Shapiro provided impermissible benefits and gifts to at least 72 Miami Hurricane players over the last 10 years. Research found that the players received cash, entertainment, jewelry, trips, yacht rides, bounties for field plays, prostitutes, and abortions for some of them. According to the source, everyone knew- the coaches, teammates, and others around the campus of the royal treatment that these players were given and a lot of them have even moved onto pro status, and they are as followed:

Jon Beason, linebacker, Carolina Panthers, Calais Campbell, defensive end, Arizona Cardinals, Orlando Franklin, offensive tackle, Denver Broncos: Frank Gore, running back, wide receiver/returner, Chicago Bears, Sam Shields, cornerback, Green Bay Packers, D.J. Williams, linebacker, Denver Broncos, Kellen Winslow, Jr., tight end, Tampa Bay Buccaneers to name a few. The sad thing about this entire situation is that the players that haven’t reached “pro status” are left behind to deal with all of the press negativity, fans, and maybe a chance at the pros. They must come back down to earth, eat the humiliation of everyone that have benefited in the past, and live a modest lifestyle like any other up and hopefully coming star. I believe that there has been some foul play in this whole scandal, because in every lie there is some truth, but why did it have to come out right before the season starts?

"Back To Football Friday!"

Back To Football Friday

According to all of the articles posted on the web by most all teams in the National Football League and United Way are launching a campaign to celebrate the return of the NFL to sports, and to continue the fight to end childhood obesity, by giving a better understanding and awareness about youth health and wellness. In the effort to raise awareness for the cause, the NFL is asking schools, businesses, and the public to spread the word and fight the cause by educating everyone and improving youth health issues here in America. Schools are being asked to organize a “Back to Football Friday” celebration that everyone can participate in, and by registering their school, sending 3 to 6 photos of the events, 3 (100 words or less) essays will earns the opportunity to be named one of 34 NFL Play 60 Super Schools and have a chance to win a $10,000 grant for having the most spirit and participation in this nationwide school contest, there is no limit to how many times you can register, which increases their chances to win.

Businesses are also given the opportunity to also get in on the fun and excitement by launching fund raising events to raise money for the cause, and by asking each employee to donate $5 to United Way to fight childhood obesity. The incentives for the donation will be to be able to wear their favorite teams gear on the “Back to Football Friday, celebration that launch September 9, 2011. Whichever teams gives the most donations will earn a chance of winning a trip to Super Bowl XL.

They are asking everyone else to reach out to their Twitter, Facebook families, and any other networking channel they may use to spread the word for the cause to help bring childhood obesity to an end by taking networking to another level.

In my opinion the Back to Football Friday fundraising campaign is worth the effort. Because childhood obesity is truly an issue today in America that need to be address in schools, homes, and around the world and, because the NFL gained so much negative exposure during the lockout, partnering up with the United Way, for the sake of the Kids was a great marketing move, and for a good cause, in order to try and help the league gain some positive exposure before the season starts.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. I have a dream speech is the TED.com speech that I decided to analysis mainly because of the emotional effect that it has on me every time I watch it. The power and energy of that march that day was unbelievable to watch. When watching this world event, I am reminded of how bless we are to have had such a great leader, and how far this world has come today. Dr. King was a very informative speaker for back in 1963. He had a vision that we can all still relate to today. It wasn’t just a “black thing” that he was speaking on but a concept that would shape our world into a place that allow us to see how to move in a positive direction, by giving everyone the opportunity to learn and grow from each other, which gives us the advantage to learn more. But because I am black and some of my family member did experience some of the adversity that was going on during that time, it means the world to me that one man’s vision and others before him gave my family hope and a dream powerful enough to passed down to my generation and will continue to for many to come. In my opinion, in order to achieve you must know where you come from, to know where you are going. Because of Dr. King, I am able to follow my dreams, and interest to enter into the job markets of my choice without being keep at a stage because of my race or the color of my skin, but given the opportunity because of my ability and knowledge. The social impact of that march was to say the least the most important march in the world, because it has changed so many lives, and set the stage for so many people to copy the vision and dream of Dr. King. The Professional Trade Association that I choose to analyze is the National Sports Marketing Network (NSMN) because they seem to be very information in all areas surrounding the sporting industry's up to date news, teams, players, coaches, marketing tools, networking by offering chapters in almost every major city in the US. The NSMN even provide a list of reference books on a regular basis that provides good information regarding the industry, by industry leaders. Some of the major corporate members are Harvard University Athletics Department, San Francisco 49ers, Merrell Lynch, ESPN, Best Buy, Samsung Electronic America, Inc. WSOC-TV to name a few. NSMN provide counseling, information on Charity Events and different groups that are associated with sports and entertainment. Because the NSMN has been in existence sine 1998, and currently have over 9000 members and still growing, I feel that they are moving forward toward and gaining a positive position in the sports marketing industry. I truly respect founder Jennifer Karpf vision and mission of providing a very informative link amongst the industry’s best. They cover hot off the press sporting stories by major news media like, The New York Times, CNN, Forbes, Brand week, ABC, Chicago Sun times, Sport Business Daily, Promo, AJC, Star Telegram, Dallas News, DFW, to name a few. MISSION STATEMENT

National Sports Marketing Network (NSMN) is the exclusive trade organization for the sports business industry. For more than a decade, NSMN has been a pioneer in hosting industry education, networking events and discounts in the sports business industry.

Founded in 1998, the national trade organization includes nearly 9,000 individual and corporate members with chapters in major markets and members based in more than 50 U.S. cities. NSMN Board members are dedicated to the advancement of the sports business industry through senior-level networking, professional development counseling, and the production of thought-provoking, issue-oriented seminars created to raise the level of discourse on critical sports industry issues.

NSMN is Board-governed by the sports industry’s leading decision-makers from teams, leagues, properties, agencies, college athletics, sponsors and the media. Known for producing groundbreaking, timely and newsworthy discussions, NSMN Membership is annual and open only to professionals who work in sports business.

CHARITY

Sports Tackles Cancer is an industry-wide fundraising program that unites sports business executives AND sports fans in the fight against cancer. 100% of the funds raised are donated to cancer research and patient advocacy. Organized by the National Sports Marketing Network (NSMN), the industry trade association, Sports Tackles Cancer is the first charitable program of its kind to encourage sports executives across the country to use their resources to help create additional awareness about cancer and to raise money. Through national outreach to sports business professionals, teams, leagues, sports sponsors and sports fans, Sports Tackles Cancer has raised thousands of dollars since its inception in 2008. Sports Tackles Cancer encourages creative fundraising programs and recognizes the individual and corporate sports industry leaders who take a stand in their public support of the program. Individual and corporate giving is welcome.
