3 years ago, the Geneva International Motor Show was the car show the first international instrument to a section devoted specifically to the topic of alternative transportation and environmental propulsion technologies and renewable fuel sources: The Green Pavilion. From the start, visitors can find well-qualified small businesses and startups that have been presenting their innovative visions for the future of personal transportation. And now, the major automakers are also to take this opportunity to present their latest concepts in this area. The Green Pavilion can be found in the park Sarasin, just opposite the main entrance to Palexpo in Geneva International Motor Show which runs from 8-18 March 2012.

In 2009, long before the global economic crisis, the International Motor Show of Geneva created the Green Pavilion and has thus become THE international exhibition for auto focusing on the development of transportation technologies of the future.

For its first edition, the Green Pavilion featured companies only highly qualified and specialized institutes, and start groups that might take this opportunity to present the latest results of their research to the public as part of an overall exposure . NAIAS 2012 -NSX New Concept Car

Honda has unveiled its NSX Concept at the NAIAS in Detroit, previewing the next-generation NSX. Expected to enter the market in 2015. “The NSX will be the ultimate expression of synergy between man and machine. The car development will be led by the US, and it will be sold globally within the next three years. It is a car that is up to the performance of racing and, while this car is for customers, you might see it racing as well,” Honda’s president and CEO Takanobu Ito said in Detroit.

“This is a car that demonstrates our passion for performance. The NSX became an icon through its power-to-weight ratio and the driving experience that it gave anyone behind the wheel. “Since 2005 we have strived to make a successor but global change has had a colossal effect on the industry in that time. Even a supercar must respond to environmental responsibility. This car is about high performance through efficiency."

NAIAS 2012 - All-new 2013 Accord Coupe Concept introduced

When the all-new 2013 Accord Coupe Concept was introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the press got a taste of what to expect from the ninth-generation Accord.

Its bold, athletic profile is only the beginning. A choice of three powertrains will be available: an efficient, 2.4-liter direct-injected 4-cylinder, a powerful 3.5-liter V-6 and a plug-in hybrid, all of which are expected to achieve class-leading fuel efficiency[1].

Both the Coupe and Sedan will show off a host of new technologies along with an entirely new design. And while both will retain their current spacious cabin size, the Sedan's exterior will be more compact, creating a more aggressive appearance.

The 2013 Accord will introduce features that are new for any Honda. Lane Departure Warning (LDW)[2], Forward Collision Warning (FCW)[3] and the Honda-exclusive LaneWatch™ blind spot display[4].

The Accord has been one of the best-selling cars in America since its introduction 36 years ago. And it's poised to continue this tradition when it hits the streets next fall.

NAIAS 2012 - Lexus Unveils Sleek Hybrid 2+2 Sport Coupe Design Concept

DETROIT, Jan. 9, 2012 - Lexus today unveiled a new design concept for a hybrid 2+2 sport coupe at the North American International Auto Show. Showcasing the future design direction for Lexus and emphasis on a driver-focused vehicle, the LF-LC concept will be at the Lexus display through January 22.
"We are in the middle of the biggest change in Lexus history - inspired by a new generation of distinctive design," said Karl Schlicht, General Manager, Lexus Product and Marketing Planning Division "The new GS embodies this with its sculpted spindle grille as our symbol of change. And now, the next chapter of Lexus evolves with the coupe design concept unveiled at Detroit. With its striking looks, this concept hybrid 2+2 hints at the design cues that are coming in a wave of new Lexus models over the next 24 months"

Challenged by the Lexus Center in Japan to come up with a design for a future hybrid sport coupe concept, the company's Calty design studio in Newport Beach, Calif. sought to advance the redefinition of Lexus with emotive, avant-garde beauty and advanced technology, yet remain within reach for premium buyers.
"Our entire studio worked to develop this beautiful interpretation of Lexus originality," said Kevin Hunter, president of Calty. "The LF-LC concept embodies our vision of what a premium sport coupe could be."
The LF-LC displays the new Lexus design language in its bold interpretation of the signature Lexus spindle grille and rear architecture. Sumptuous curves blend smoothly into dynamic angles, creating an inviting display of lines, shadows and corners.
Framed by a deep aluminum surround, the mesh pattern of the spindle grille takes 3D sculpture form, and functional air intakes in the bottom corners of the grille show the fusion of distinctive style and engineering functionality.
Daytime running lights are shaped like an "L" while the vertical fog lamps utilize a fading dot matrix pattern to suggest a sense of movement.
The profile of the LF-LC creates a powerful, dynamic silhouette that is unmistakably that of a serious driver's car. The lines of the vehicle emphasize direction and motion.
The concept car's glass roof features a lightweight, cantilevered pillar with a glass-to-glass juncture inspired by modern architecture. A rising, kick-up window graphic and polished aluminum trim are unexpected elements. Overall, the greenhouse design enhances driver visibility while adding to the sleek lines of the car.
The dynamic cabin lines are carried through to the rear deck, sculpturally integrating the spindle grille theme to echo the front of the vehicle while creating a unique sense of width. The tail lamps, inspired by the look of a jet afterburner at take-off, use inner lighting to create a remarkable sense of depth. The rear is also fitted with fog lamps, repeating the fading dot matrix pattern of the front fog lamps. Visually, the integrated tail and fog lamps repeat the "L" shape and lead the viewer's eye down to the powerful Lexus quad exhaust.
The interior of the LF-LC concept vehicle contrasts the cool ambience of advanced technology with soft textures and organic shapes to create a driver-focused synergy of form and function. The cockpit expresses a feeling of both openness and security. The driver is enveloped by deeply scooped side panels and a high, curved console. The effect is to focus the driver zone on the controls and on the road.
Based on Lexus' commitment to creating an intuitive driving experience, the LF-LC incorporates a remote touch-screen device that allows the driver to comfortably operate controls without shifting position or altering line-of-sight.

Twin 12.3-inch LCD screens provide information and navigation display. Inputs come from a touch-screen control board piercing the swept center console. Used to control the audio system, climate controls and navigation, the interface features a pop-up touch-screen keyboard for more complex entries. Similar touch-screen surfaces on each door operate the windows, mirrors, seat adjustments and personal entertainment settings.
Set directly in front of the driver, multi-level meters layer analog and LCD technologies. The bottom layer displays temperature, fuel and the background for the Eco meter. The middle layer is the tachometer mechanical center ring. The topmost layer provides indicators for the tachometer, speedometer and Eco meter.
Surfaces throughout the cabin are presented in a combination of smooth leather and suede, with brushed metal trim and wood accents. The lightweight, race-inspired front seats are formed of multiple layers and repeat the interlacing curves that define the cabin interior. The racing style steering wheel is also a lightweight design and contains integrated controls and start button. Beautiful stitch details emphasize organic movement throughout the interior.
The front-engine, rear-wheel drive LF-LC features Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, delivering both driving performance and fuel efficiency.

NAIAS 2012 - The all-new Ford Mondeo

The all-new Ford Mondeo has been launched at the Detroit motor show. The car isn’t due to go on sale until March next year, but Ford has announced it early because the Mondeo’s sister vehicle, the US-market Fusion, has just been revealed at the Detroit show.
As part of the company’s ‘One Ford’ policy, the European and Asian-market Mondeo and the US Fusion have merged to become essentially the same car.

Sources say the new car, which has been engineered primarily in America, is based on an all-new, “10 per cent stronger” platform that replaces the one under today’s Mondeo and the Mazda 6-sourced platform used by the current Fusion. It retains MacPherson struts at the front and gets all-new multi-link rear suspension. Ford claims the Mondeo has again been conceived as a driver’s car.
For now, most of the technical information relates to the Fusion, but Mondeo buyers can expect 168bhp/172lb ft 1.6-litre and 234bhp/250lb ft 2.0-litre turbocharged Ecoboost petrol engines, as well as Ford’s 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre diesels.

The US market also gets the Fusion Hybrid, which uses a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine, electric motor and CVT transmission to deliver 56mpg-plus economy. A plug-in hybrid version has also been announced which promises fuel economy equivalent to around 100mpg with a range comparable to the Chevrolet Volt.
Sources at Ford say although no decision has been made on whether hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants of the Mondeo will be sold in Europe, an electrified C/D segment car is scheduled for a 2013 launch.

The new Mondeo platform has also been engineered to accommodate all-wheel drive, which will be an option on the US-market car powered by the 2.0-litre petrol engine. Stop-start will also be an option on the new model, activated by brake pedal pressure. Lane Keeping Assist, adaptive cruise control, Active Park Assist and a Blind Spot Information System will be available as options, as will a new Active Noise Control set-up, which use the audio system to help cancel out road noise. SYNC, Ford’s in-car internet service, will also be offered on the new Mondeo, after appearing later this year in the UK in the Focus.

The look of the new Mondeo doesn’t stray too far from today’s model but, in keeping with Ford’s new design policy previewed on last year’s Evos concept, the headlamps are much smaller and the current car’s large lower air intake has been shrunk and raised, giving the nose a more than passing resemblance to contemporary Aston Martins.
The new Mondeo has grown in length by just over 13mm, and is 26mm higher. However, it is now 35mm narrower. The sides of the car are now more crisply defined, with a marked ridge running through the door handles and Audi-style sculpting in the lower door skins. The rear end, which features shallow LED tail-lights, retains the closest styling links with the Evos concept.

The exterior’s measured restraint is reflected in the “driver-orientated” cabin, which features a large, central touchscreen and touchpad audio interface. Ford claims the quality of the cabin has improved over the current car, with tighter shutlines and softer surfaces.

Why America led? Mark Fields, President Ford Americas explained: "The mid-size sedan market is worth two million sales in the US. The Toyota Camry and Honda accord dominated the Market until 2008 when it stagnated. They have stood still while fusion sales have risen. It leads favourable opinion change among consumers of all ford models, and wins the most conquest customers.
“Last year was our best sales year with the Fusion and we sold almost 250,000 vehicles. The new Fusion is something different that will change opinion again of mid size sedans. It represents a great opportunity.”
This fourth-generation Mondeo is Ford’s second attempt at building a global mid-sized car. The original 1993 Mondeo was also sold (unsuccessfully) in the US as the Contour and Mercury Mystique. Its codename, CDW27, referred to C/D segment World car. Even the name ‘Mondeo’ was created from the French ‘monde’, which means ‘world’.

The Frankfurt Motor Show 2011 - The All New Porsche 911

The All New 911

Porsche's new 911, seen here officially for the first time, will be sleeker, larger, lighter, more powerful, faster, less thirsty and, according to the maker, better to drive.

Known internally as the 991, the new 911 — the sixth truly independent model in an illustrious 48-year history — is set to make its world debut at next month’s Frankfurt motor show prior to going on sale in the UK in December.

The new 911 will initially be sold in rear-wheel drive Carrera and Carrera S coupé guises at £71,449 and £81,242 respectively — increases of £4179 and £5070 over the outgoing models. Cabriolet and four-wheel-drive variants will follow in 2012, and pave the way for a range-topping Turbo packing 523bhp in 2013.
Styling

Developed under Porsche design boss Michael Mauer, the visual changes are subtle but effective enough to set the new car apart from its predecessor.

Official dimensions are yet to be revealed, but Zuffenhausen insiders confirm the new car is 56mm longer, 65mm wider and 11mm lower than its predecessor at 4491mm in length, 1873mm in width and 1299mm in height. The wheelbase has been extended by 100mm at 2450mm.

The traditional round headlamps are set on the front of a wider, slightly higher front bumper. The lights have been made bigger and house more complex internal graphics than before, and are complemented by new LED daytime running lamps on the leading edge of a reshaped bumper.

The rear is distinguished by new, thin LED tail-lamps. They sit underneath a prominent lip that forms the trailing edge of the engine lid and wrap further around the rear bumpers than before. Changes to the design of the rear wing, which continues to deploy at 75mph, help reduce lift without any detrimental effect on the low level of drag, according to Porsche.

In the interests of production efficiency and parts sharing compatibility with next year’s Boxster and Cayman, the new 911 continues to be based around a unitary monocoque structure with a high-strength steel platform.

But in a break from tradition, the new car receives a predominantly aluminium body shell, which Porsche says is 45kg lighter than the outgoing 911’s steel body.
Engines and Gearboxes

As with the outgoing 911, the new model has a choice of two standard naturally aspirated, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engines mounted aft of the rear axle line.

The big news concerns the downsizing of the base unit in the Carrera. It drops in capacity from 3.6 litres to 3.4 litres — the same as the Boxster S and Cayman S. But while the Boxster/Cayman S engine delivers 316bhp, the new Carrera packs a sturdier 345bhp at 6400rpm — up by 4bhp over the old 3.6-litre engine. It also has 280lb ft of torque.

The Carrera S continues with a 3.8-litre unit, but it has changes to the induction and exhaust which liberate an extra 14bhp at 394bhp at 7000rpm and this version boasts 324lb ft. At the rear, the Carrera continues to feature two oval exhaust pipes, while the Carrera S gets four round pipes.

The new model receives a new seven-speed manual gearbox — a first for a series production road car. It has been described as being closely related to the new car’s optional seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox. Both gearboxes have been engineered to support standard automatic stop-start and brake energy recuperation.

Porsche claims a 0-62mph time of 4.4sec for the Carrera with the optional PDK gearbox and Sports Chrono package (an improvement of 0.3sec), with the similarly specified Carrera S put at 4.1sec, or 0.3sec faster than before.

No top speed claims have been made, but aerodynamic tweaks are said to allow the new Carrera to top 180mph, with the Carrera S extending beyond 190mph.

The new Carrera is claimed to deliver combined consumption of 34mpg with the PDK gearbox, a reduction of 6mpg on its predecessor, with a CO2 rating of 194g/km — the first time any 911 has dipped below the 200g/km mark. The Carrera S returns 32mpg, with a CO2 figure of 205g/km.

Chassis

There have been significant chassis changes as a result of the lengthened wheelbase in the quest to further improve the handling, grip and ride.

Porsche confirms that the front track has increased in width while the multi-link rear axle assembly has been redesigned with new pick-up points in a bid to improved longitudinal stability and provide more secure lateral properties.

Porsche has dropped hydraulic steering actuation for a new electro-mechanical arrangement as part of the drive to reduce weight and lower fuel consumption. Another new feature is Active Chassis Control (PACC), an active stabilisation system conceived to reduce roll and give greater wheel control for higher cornering speeds.

The new 911 will also come with Active Suspension Management (PASM), which will be optional on the Carrera and standard on the Carrera S.

It features continuously variable dampers and different throttle mapping. Optional sports suspension brings firmer springs and dampers, reduced ride height and a more aggressively configured limited-slip differential.

Subaru will give the clearest indication yet of the make-up of its all-new coupé – now officially named BRZ - at next month’s Frankfurt motor show with a new technology concept.

The Frankfurt concept, shown partially in a cryptic teaser video on Subaru’s official website, will be a development of the clear plastic-bodied concept at this year’s Geneva motor show that showcased Subaru’s involvement in the coupé it has co-developed with Toyota: the four-cylinder boxer engine, chassis and suspension package.

BRZ stands for “boxer engine, rear-wheel-drive, zenith”, with the latter word claimed to embody Subaru’s “ultimate passion” for the new baby sports coupé.

The clear plastic body of the Geneva concept gave an indication of the styling of the BRZ. Toyota also brought the latest version of the co-developed coupe, called FT-86, to Geneva which gave “the clearest indication yet of the final design for Toyota’s next sports car”.

The final production version of the car will be revealed at the Tokyo motor show in November, with sales to follow in 2012. Production will take place at Subaru’s Gumma plant in Japan.

Subaru will also launch a production version of its new XV crossover at the Frankfurt show.

If you think the 2012 VW Beetle looks like the old Beetle, well, you’d be right: from Super Beetles to New Beetles and Ragster concepts, this newest version of the automotive icon is inspired by a 73-year history. But make no mistake: 2012 ushers in a Beetle full of today’s key automotive features and technology, from three engine choices to Keyless Entry, an available panoramic sunroof, Fender Premium Audio and more. So yes – the aggressive style, the retro lines and planted look will get your attention. But it’s the car that will make you want to drive. And drive.

Sporty. Dynamic. Bold. Since its debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, those have been just a few of the words used to describe the newly redesigned 2012 VW Beetle. Arriving here, however, at this new interpretation of a classic icon, is a story about drawing inspiration from the original Beetle and translating its unique style in a modern way. To do that, Volkswagen Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff and team eschewed the design geometry defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it), gave the car a lower profile, a longer hood and a steeper front windshield. They also stretched the Beetle 3.3 inches wider and 6 inches longer, creating a more sporting, powerful appearance.

Another key to the design of the new 2012 VW Beetle is the rear spoiler, integrated into the design of the car with a black top and a body color under side. What that spoiler also hints at is the Beetle’s performance: the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine, pictured here, will be offered with a DSG 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. At 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, the turbo will be the sportiest Beetle offered – though you’d be hard pressed to say no to the 2012 VW Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel, thanks to 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque. The TDI Clean Diesel Beetle offers manufacturer estimates of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city, and 33 mpg combined. Also available is the 2.5L five cylinder engine, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or optional 6-speed automatic. The five cylinder engine produces 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft of torque.

quick glance at the styling of the back of the 2012 VW Beetle reveals its connection to Beetle heritage. This is, however, unmistakably a Beetle for today with dual exhaust, 19-inch wheels and available features such as a panoramic roof, keyless entry and personalization options such as colors, wraps and an annual theme model.

Inside, Beetle heritage cues continue with available painted or carbon-look dashboards, an additional glove box integrated into the dash and optional gauges (oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge) located above the entertainment system. There’s also a split-folding rear seat.

Driving this newest Beetle is a decidedly modern experience, and one designed for drivers, from its engine choices and available 19-inch wheels to details such as an instrument panel arranged directly in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) that provides all key information at a glance. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line. Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard. Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.

Sometimes it is time to leave the city. Escape the restrictions of everyday life. The BMW i8 is an icon of progress. It combines the energizing performance of a sports car with benchmark efficiency.

The concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics created excitement and very positive feedback at the IAA 2009. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics made it clear that an emotional sports car with the fuel economy of a small car is no contradiction, but could soon be reality.

After successful initial testing of the vehicle concept, the decision for a series-production vehicle was quickly made. The BMW i8 Concept is the next step in the evolution of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. The result: The most progressive and innovative sports car of its time. Its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 Concept – fitted over its front axle – with a high-performance three-cylinder combustion engine producing 164 kW/220 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at the rear. Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents to the full, delivering the performance of a sports car but the fuel consumption of a small car.

Acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds combined with fuel consumption in the European cycle of under three litres per 100 kilometres (approx. 94 mpg imp) are figures currently beyond the capability of any vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance. Thanks to its large lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a domestic power supply, the BMW i8 Concept can travel up to 35 kilometres (approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone. Added to which, the 2+2-seater offers enough space for four people, giving it a high level of everyday practicality.

The LifeDrive architecture of the BMW i8 Concept has been carefully adapted to enhance the vehicle's sports car character, and therefore to deliver unbeatable performance and excellent driving dynamics. The motor in the front axle module and combustion engine at the rear are connected by an "energy tunnel", which houses the high-voltage battery. This gives the car a low centre of gravity – and the dynamic benefits that come with it. The positioning of the electric motor and engine over their respective axles and the space-saving and well-balanced packaging of all components result in an optimum 50/50 weight distribution.

The so-called Life module conjures up a feeling of space inside the car more generous than even the latest conversion vehicles can offer. Select materials lend the open and airy cabin a lounge-like character. The use of renewable raw materials is another defining characteristic of the interior, offering passengers a further means of "experiencing" the sustainability of the vehicle. Parts of the instrument panel and door panelling are visibly made from natural fibres, while the naturally tanned leather of the seats creates a lounge-style ambience. With four seats, wide-opening opposing "coach" doors, a boot capacity of around 200 litres and an additional functional compartment in the front, the BMW i3 Concept is neatly equipped for the demands of everyday use.
Innovative connectivity functions create a seamless connection between the BMW i3 Concept and its customers' lives outside the car. Remote functions accessible via a smartphone enable owners to find their vehicles, flag up nearby charging stations, allow battery charging and preconditioning at the touch of a button, and supply information on the current status of the vehicle. Meanwhile, intelligent BMW ConnectedDrive assistance systems ease the stress on drivers in monotonous city driving situations and allow them to arrive at their destination more safely and in a more relaxed state of mind.

We shall be exploring this “ECOSYSTEM Electric Mobility” and with it the entire related value chain in the Electric Mobility Congress at the 64th IAA Cars 2011.
