St Ives Harbor in Cornwall is a magic spot for lovers of the sea, boats and harbors. My wife and I spent a few weeks there in summer of 2009 and loved it. If you are an artist then you will want to do as many before you have ... take your brushes, paints and canvases down to paint. If you are just looking for a great place to getaway then its perfect for that. This painting is of the St Ives Harbor at low tide in summer.

Further down the Great Ocean Road as you get close to Port Campbell is the famous Twelve Apostles rock formation. This stunning peice of coast line is a popular tourist destination and provides some incredible imagery along the coast. Sadly they are in decay and the rock formation in the front of this painting no longer exists.

I painted this typical Australian scene on my 44th birthday ... hence the name "Path Over The Hill". For my birthday my mother gave me a great DVD by Warwick Fuller who is a master of painting landscape scenes with lots of light and shadows and really captures the spirit of the Australian landscape. So having watched the DVD I painted this as an exercise in applying some of the lessons learnt on the DVD. This is a scene from the rolling hills just near Geelong where I live.

Another hot summers day on Angelsea Beach. This is similar view of another of my Angelsea cliff paintings ... this time the cliff faces are mostly in direct sunlight washing out the hills behind. If you ever get the chance to walk along Anglesea beach and walk along the cliffs then you will love it. If you are an artist this is a must stop place to go and paint.

Point Lonsdale is an often visited place for local artists and generally they all paint the lighthouse. I have painted it myself a number of times. Just around the corner however is the Point Lonsdale peir which has a great view across the rip. This painting was painted on location ... it was low tide and I found a small cave in the rocky cliff face to set up in out of the wind. The sun was just coming up adding a nice warm glow to everything.

One of the first places tourists stop when they venture down the Great Ocean Road is the lookout at Anglesea that looks back towards the cliffs. Its an amazing site ... but if you take the time to walk down onto the beach and around the corner you will find its even more amazing up close and personal. I did that just recently on a perfect summers day and came across this scene of a family playing on the beach with the cliffs providing a dramatic back drop.

Jan Juc is just around the corner from Torquay ... its always been the little cousin often overlooked in the past. I can remember one trip to Jan Juc surf beach when I was young and being knocked about in the surf. Later that day I found a gentlemans gold watch and vividly remember turning it in at the surf life saving club. Funny how little things stick in your mind. Today more and more people are discovering the charm of Jan Juc ... for an artist the dramatic cliffs provide endless subject matter. This painting was inspired after Sue ran in the Bells Bash fun run and I went down to the beach.

The Great Ocean Road in Australia has some of the best surf beaches in the world. Miles upon miles of endless beaches as the road winds its way through the mountains and along the cliff faces. There is nothing more magic than the early morning sun as it rises above the horizon with its warm glow lighting up the beach ... perfect time for a walk and a painting :)

Early Morning On Great Ocean Road

Lots of people ask me about my painting process ... so I thought I would walk you through it step-by-step. This painting titled 'Early Morning On Great Ocean Road' is a great example of how to approach a painting from start to finish. I am fortunate enough to live by the Great Ocean Road and have spent a lot of time there.

In this painting I am painting on a peice of mdf board that has had geso applied to surface. It is 8" x 10" and I have applied masking tape to the back to attach it to a painting board on my easle. I start off with a little burnt sienna thinned down to put in the drawing. At this stage it is really about placement and getting the composition right first.

With the sky I first off apply titanium white thinned down over the entire sky area. Then with a large flat brush I add in Ultramarine Blue. I make sure it is darkest at top of sky and in the outer corners to draw the eye in. I am fairly random on how I apply the paint and leave some gaps as you can see.

In order to get the effect of the early morning sun rising over horizon I add in Yellow Ochre at horizon line and back behind the cliffs. This is then blended back into the sky to create a smoother transition.

I swith to a smaller filbert brush and with a variety of dark mixes (mostly Burnt Sienna & Ultramarine Blue) I start to create the shadow areas of the cliff faces. This is done by dragging the brush downward along cliff face. By varying the colours with more of the blue here and there, and then more of the Burnt Sienna you get a mix of colour and warmer shadow areas. Notice also how I have used the clouds to soften the transition in the sky.

Next I add in highlights on rocks and cliffs using more Yellow Ochre in the mix. Where the cliffs meet the rising sun the cliff face is almost all Yellow Ochre. The sand is blocked in using Yellow Ochre and Titanium White mix and the water is blocked in using Ultramarine Blue and Yellow Ochre mixes.

Finishing touches are added last with the people and their shadows, the whitecaps on the waves and foam on the sand, and of course the foreground rocks. Overall I am happy with the result and this is a great little study to practice as it is a limited pallette used to great effect.

Australia's surf life savers do an amazing job. At surf beaches all over the country you will find them keeping a watchful eye over everyday folk enjoying their time at the beach. Growing up I spent a lot of time at Torquay Surf Beach and used to be fascinated by these heroic men and women in their yellow and red uniforms.

This painting comes in a great little white frame and can easily be hung on wall or use the stand to display on sideboard or table:
