Like other members of the mollusk family, snails lay eggs that eventually hatch to release live young. With such reproduction, most of the gestation process takes place within the eggs over several weeks time. During that time and immediately after hatching, the baby snail goes through several stages of development.

Mutual Fertilization the Snail Way

Most snail species are hermaphrodites -- they possess the reproductive organs of both the male and the female. Technically, these snails can reproduce on their own, but most choose to find a mate and reproduce sexually. A 2009 study found that sexual reproduction produced fewer harmful mutations in the snails’ genes than did asexual reproduction. To mate, one snail rubs the foot -- the portion of the snail body responsible for movement -- against another snail's foot to exchange sperm. After the mating ends, both of the snails will typically have fertilized eggs and will bury them.

Baby Snail Gestation

After snails bury their eggs, the so-called gestation process usually does not take long. Some snails begin hatching in as little as 24 hours; some don't hatch for up to four weeks. In the wild, the average gestation period lasts between two and four weeks. What happens inside the shell during this time varies according to environment and according to snail species. For example, Japanese snail larvae inside the egg begin moving only after the tenth day, while Calliostoma ligatum snails have already hatched by the fourth day and seem to be moving within the egg on the second day.

Larvae Development in the Egg

Snail larvae develop initially through a process known as spiral holoblastic cleavage. Cleavage refers to the initial cell divisions of the fertilized worms, which create the cells that will continue dividing and specializing to create the larvae. In mollusks and a few other animal groups, this division results in a spiral shape with the groups of divided cells touching each other and forming distinctive patterns.

Hatching From the Egg

When they are ready to leave the eggs, the larvae begin tapping on the inside of the shells to eventually weaken them enough to permit breakage. In many species, the first snails to hatchstay in the nest and consume the eggs of their siblings. Even after hatching, most snails stay close to their birth location to the next for up to three months, with their parent continuing to provide protection. However, the nepionic whorls or markings on the shells at their hatching are usually distinctive, allowing for species identification.

ANSWER TO ONE OF THE QUESTIONS FREQUENTLY ASKED IN SNAIL FARMING BUSINESS: " HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO REAR MY SNAILS TO A VERY BIG SIZE FOR SELL?"

I will love to address this question in this way: In every livestock business, there are different business opportunities. I will like to boost my answer by bringing in a more popular area of livestock business, poultry. When you ask any practical snail farmer this question, is just like asking a poultry farmer that set out to go into egg production , hatchery, 3weeks breed and sell, 2 months meat production stage, 3-4months big size birds, how long will it take him/her to get to old layers stage. In snail farming, the ideal thing is to kick off your farm with what we call Point of Lay (POL). Snails start laying at 9months. So if you kick off with snails that are 9months to one year is good. When they lay, you can hatch and decide to sell as baby snails. You can also sell your snails at grower stage , point of lay stage, table size stage or jumbo stage. The truth of the matter is that no snail farmer that understands the business, will set out to rear his/her snail from baby snail to jumbo, having in mind that his/her target is to reach jumbo size. If you set out for that only, l will say is a waste of resources. I will want you to understand this more by giving example with my practical experience in my farm. I started my farm with eighty (80) point of lay AMO specie of snails, which is the specie that lays the least number of eggs. As l culled them off in less than two years that they were with me, they left behind about three thousand snails plus some eggs in my incubator. This is bar mortality. You can see that my effort and target was not to get to very big size snails to sell but l have sold them and made some cash. This is just like what happens when a poultry farmer culls off his/her old layers.

In summary, l will say that the business of snail farming is not on setting out to grow your snails to very big size. Good snail farmers do not like keeping their snails to grow so big because the bigger they are, the less productive they are.

I will also love to use this channel to ask my follow snail farmers to think about how we can carry the business to the level of selling snail eggs. I know the challenge is that snail eggs are so fragile. Little heat causes crack on them and when they are cracked, they do not hatch. Not withstanding let's keep on researching on the way forward.

Can you miss a period without being pregnant?

5. Thyroid problems

PRESIDENT BUHARI TO PARTICIPATE IN AFRICAN FINANCE SUMMIT IN PARIS, MEET WITH EMMANUEL MACRON ON SECURITY

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday, May 16, 2021, depart Abuja for Paris, France, on a four-day official visit to attend African Finance Summit which will be focused on reviewing African economy, following shocks from Coronavirus pandemic, and getting relief, especially from increased debt burden on countries.

The Summit, to be hosted by President Emmanuel Macron, will draw major stakeholders in the global finance institutions and some Heads of Government, who will, collectively, discuss external funding and debt treatment for Africa, and private sector reforms.

During the visit, President Buhari will meet with the French President to discuss growing security threats in Sahel and Lake Chad region, political relations, economic ties, climate change and partnership in buoying the health sector, particularly in checking spread of Covid-19, with more research and vaccines.

Before returning to Nigeria, President Buhari will receive some key players in the oil and gas sector, engineering and telecommunications, European Council and European Union Representative for Foreign and Security Policy and Commission, and members of the Nigerian community.

The President will be accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, Minister of Trade and Investment, Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, and Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire.

Palestine Update: Turkish President Recep Erdogan Phones Buhari, Seeks Nigeria's Support For Palestine

President Recep Erdogan of Turkey has told the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), that he expects Nigeria to show solidarity with Palestinians following the latest attacks by Israel on Jerusalem and Gaza.

Erdogan made the call when he spoke with Buhari on the telephone on Thursday evening.

The Turkish Presidency disclosed this in a message posted on its Twitter handle, @trpresidency.

The Turkish President told Buhari that his country was trying to get the international community to teach Isreal, which he described as “unlawful, unjust and unscrupulous” a lesson.

He expressed the belief that Nigeria will support Palestinians in “this rightful cause.”

The message read, “President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by phone with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria.

“Exchanging Eid al-Fitr greetings, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.

“Drawing attention to Turkey’s efforts exerted in order for the international community to teach the necessary lesson to unlawful, unjust and unscrupulous Israel due to its attacks against Palestine, President Erdogan voiced his belief that Nigeria would show solidarity with the Palestinians in this rightful cause.”

Apart from Buhari, reports say Erdogan had also spoken with some other world leaders on the matter.

He was said to have spoken with Kyrgyz President, Sadyr Japarov; his Afghan counterpart, Ashraf Ghani; Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, a former Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad; and Libya’s Prime Minister, Abdul Dbeibeh.

According to media reports, Israel’s ongoing offensive on Gaza has left 103 dead, including 27 children and 11 women.

The reports quoted the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Another 580 people were said to have been injured.

Hotels.ng also provide reviews and recommend hotels ensuring that their clients stay in a clean and comfortable hotel all over the country. They aim to be the biggest provider of travel information and reservation in Africa.

Hotels.ng was founded by Mark Essien in 2013. Shortly after the company was founded, Spark.ng made an initial investment of $75,000 in Hotel.ng. Seeing the significant promise of the startup, it did not take a while before Spark.ng made another investment of $150,000. This is a is a Venture Capital (VC) backed startup that offers modern financial services for emerging markets such as Nigeria, Brazil and Indonesia. The company was founded in 2014 by a small group of computer scientists from Stanford University, aimed to use artificial intelligence to provide access to credit.

Mines prides itself as the world’s most powerful platform for consumer credit in emerging markets. The business combines world-class artificial intelligence and extensive use of data with a strong focus on local partnerships to build financial inclusion.

They observed a problem; more than 3 billion adults globally do not have access to credit. Mines partners with banks, retailers and mobile operators to provide a credit-as-a-service digital platform that enables institutions in emerging markets to offer credit products to their customers.

They provide financial insights on their clients’ customers using phone records, bank records, and payment transaction history. LifeBank is an e-health startup dedicated to saving human lives by speeding up blood donations and deliveries to hospitals. It facilitates the transmission of blood from labs across the country to patients and doctors in hospitals.

LifeBank work with hospitals round the clock to find life saving medical products and deliver to the hospitals in the right condition across Africa. LifeBank believe no African should die from shortage of essential medical products at the hospital level. They deliver medical products such as blood, blood products, oxygen as well as vaccines to hospitals across Africa.

The startup was established in 2016 by Temie Giwa-Tubosun to ensure that safe blood supplies and medical products are delivered to hospitals and those in need using smart solutions.

The health startup secured $200,000 funding from EchoVC Partners and Fola Laoye to expand its services. They launched a new service called AirBank, an emergency medical oxygen delivery service to reduce Nigeria’s child mortality rate caused by limited access to oxygen.

According to their website, LifeBank has moved 12,570 products, served 704 hospitals, attracted 6,542 donors and saved 3118 lives. LifeBank has screening centers in Lagos and Abuja.

Paystack

Paystack is a Nigerian-based payment startup that allows businesses to accept funds via credit card, debit card, money transfer and mobile money on their websites or mobile apps. It was founded by Shola Akinlade and Ezra Olubi in 2015 to enable Nigerian merchants accept online payment.

Paystack helps businesses in Africa get paid by anyone, anywhere in the world and is trusted by over 27,000 plus businesses. Some of Paystack merchants are MTN, Domino’s Pizza, Axa Mansard, Ren Money and Taxify.

Why Nigerian banks are slashing cash dollar deposit by 50% – Nigerian Deposit Money Banks (DMBs)

Some Nigerian Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) have reduced the amount of cash dollar deposit in domiciliary accounts by 50 percent from $10,000 to $5,000 monthly.

Analysts say the move is in order to limit speculative dollar demand by restricting individuals from depositing cash in domiciliary accounts. Speculative demand is thriving on the back of a near N80 spread between the official and black market rate.

While some of the banks have reviewed their procedure for foreign exchange transfer from domiciliary accounts, others have sent notification to their customers informing them that they can only deposit $5,000 in cash into their accounts monthly.

One of the systemic important banks, on Tuesday, May 12, 2021, sent a letter to all staff on ‘review of procedure for FX transfer from domiciliary accounts’, which stated that customer’s transfer request for amounts up to $5,000 can be initiated and fully consummated in the branch upon the presentation of relevant support documents.

It said transactions in excess of $5,000 can be initiated in the branch but must be reviewed at the head office, before final processing. Such transactions the bank said must be supported with relevant documents and necessary approval.

Jimi Ogbobine, head of Consulting at Agusto Consulting, a pan-African credit rating agency, said the development was meant to reduce speculation.

Ogbobine said people were looking for different ways to trade on the arbitrage on the naira between the parallel and official market. “The gap of about N80 today between the two markets would be able to drive speculator behaviour.”

However, the best way to truly reduce speculative demand, according to Ogbobine, “is to return to the fundamentals, which is to harmonise the two markets and improve uniformity between the two markets. We need to see rate convergence between the two markets,” he said.

On his part, Uche Uwaleke, professor of capital market and president, Capital Market Academics of Nigeria, said if there is a directive from the CBN to that effect, “I see it as an attempt to channel more US dollars to the forex market and stabilize the Exchange rate which is positive for the economy”.

Another bank also indicated that cash deposits are no longer allowed for some account holders in a letter to clients.

“There is a $5,000 monthly cash deposit limit. We encourage you to make more deposits via electronic transfers. Cash-funded transfers to beneficiaries with accounts in other banks in Nigeria are no longer allowed. There will be no restriction to the frequency or value of transactions for accounts funded through inflows but supporting documents are required before payments are processed. Liverpool have thrashed Manchester United 4-2 at Old Trafford to brighten their chances of a top four finish in English Premier League.

This is the second time United are losing two consecutive games at home in two three days.

United had lost 1-2 at home to Leicester City on Tuesday, a loss that handed Manchester City the premier league title.
