Furniture

I've been working on lots of small furniture for Sweet Ila Mae's barn sale!

Mostly I wanted to have some pieces to build my booth and to display all my small stuff! I'm soooo happy with how all of it turned out!

I'm pretty much a novice at furniture painting. I painted a lot of stuff when I was younger, but I knew nothing about how to paint, proper types, top coats, etc. so these are my first successful pieces! ;)

Almost of this was painted with DIY chalk paint (made with plaster of Paris), with the exception of the white sides on the tall dresser below. That is CeCe Caldwell's Chalk Paint. All are waxed with CeCe's clear wax. Love. Love. Love that wax!! I use it on everything, and its lasted all these pieces plus more, with just under half a can left!!

All "distressed" areas were dry brushed. It looks 10 times better in person! The hardware I sprayed with oil rubbed bronze. Makes a world of difference! I got both of these pieces from friends and they were very well-loved and used. Almost vintage!

This bench had nasty maroon carpet stapled to it. Super. Nasty. You could tell the bench was handmade though and it had potential. My mom picked it up at a yard sale.

Now it's cute, stripey, and has some signs to match!!

Cute nightstand, stripped the dark top which had nasty maps mod-podged on it and whitewashed it a bit. And small round table was previously dark stained too. Looks beachy and frenchy respectively now! This was the only photo is snapped before I stored them away for the sale, but it's with lots of other cute stuff headed to the barn sale too! The hardware on the nightstand just got a quick whitewash and sanding. It was decent to begin with

Gray and cream bookshelf. Previously with heart cut out doors.

Ignore this mess in the garage! This is going to be "my desk" at the sale. It was a beast to paint with the beaded sides so I just sort of slapped it on and it ended up cuter than I expected! I still have a board I'm going to add to the back with my logo.

Oh, one other exception, this piece was spray painted on the black part. I didn't have the patience to hand paint it!! It looks great though! Distressed beautiful on the edges and sealed with a polyurethane. The top is DIY chalk paint and waxed though!

This piece I worked on awhile ago and it's been a makeshift night stand for the hubby. It's a little too girlie though, so it's headed to the sale!

Only a couple more pieces to work on...if I get to them! :) If not, I think this is plenty! My booth is only 10x9 and will have lots of other stuff, vintage goodies and of course my signs!!

Also working on painting some furniture for my upcoming sale. This sweet little bench is one piece I've recently completed!

I love these North Pole signs! A little bit of Christmas whimsy, without being too cheesy!

I adore how the aqua shows up under this red sign, and I barely did any distressing to get it!

Funny story about this last one…I picked this piece of wood up off the side of the road! I loved it’s shape and thought it would be perfect for a sign pointing somewhere!

I’m personally fond of the last one since its super pretty distressed, and it’s blue! The above groups of three have sold well, and they everyone that has bought them has bought all three!

It’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas! I don’t know about you but I ALWAYS run short on time to buy/make gifts and make as many new decorations as I want! Especially now that kids are around!

I’m all for getting started early on buying and making things for Christmas….but actually decorating?? Yeah I think we get a little shorted, not being able to decorate till after Thanksgiving, but seriously don’t start decorating for Christmas in October! Hehe! I say that with love because my best friend usually has her stuff up around Halloween AND as of October 10th, my town has their Christmas lights up on the light poles! They aren’t lit up yet, but seriously, it’s a little early! Soooo, the rest of this week, I’ll be featuring some of my Christmas signs! Today, I’m showing off my Christmas letter blocks! These couldn’t be easier! I made my letters myself with this method, but you could easily use stencils or stickers to make your own!

I’m sure you’ve seen lots of these signs around with “You are my Sunshine” on them! They are pretty popular!

Funny thing is, my husband says the song behind it is actually based on something really sad? But I’m not really familiar with where it came from, I just remember my grandpa bouncing me on his knee and singing it to me, so it brings fond memories!

Here are a couple versions I’ve done….

This above one I’m not completely happy with….wish it had turned out cleaner like the one before. I need to re-do it!

Continuting our 31 days of signs, here's a few more signs for inspiration!

Last year I made a "Bushel and a Peck" sign for a customer (and former roomate/amazing friend!), and I was inspired to make a few more!

I can't even remember what colors I used on her sign because I made it so quickly and shipped it out without a picture! Oops!

This gray and purple one, I made using my first ever DIY chalk paint. I used baking soada, a little water and purple paint, and I love the way it distressed and shows the wood grain! The gray is spray paint over top of the chalk paint, and it was so much easier to work with than usual!

I created my own stencils with this method to make these signs.

Continuing this weeks random theme of sign inspiration, here is another idea!

I made these little letter blocks right before one of the shows I did. I ran out of time to make as many as I wanted, and haven’t made any more, but I’ve still been selling a lot of them! It’s been something fun for kids to look through to find their own initials while their parents are shopping the rest of my signs!

I made these using stickers (see how to here).

Sorry the picture is so bright!! I keep them in this divider that was originally a shelf that I spray painted to look shabby white and use it at sales along with these blocks in it.

A customer asked if I could make larger blocks in her last name, in the same green and red, but with some cream blocks too and brown letters. This is what I came up with for her…

Love it! Put them on top of my fence, because I’ve realized outside is where I get my best pictures of what my signs actually look like! It was a bright day though, so they really aren’t THAT shiny!!

Continuing this week to show you signs I've made.....

Here are a couple Dr. Seuss signs I made. One was for a friend and another I made using the same stencil (I made using this method.) to make another one.

It’s sort of weird to say I made this for a friend, because I actually made it for the child of a one of the first kids I ever babysat for! But, yes, she is now my friend! I was pretty young so she’s only about 12 or so years younger than me!

Anyways, she loved this saying and wanted it for her son’s nursery. I found a great Dr. Seuss font on fontspace.com. This is where I get most of my fonts, especially since you can limit your searches to only commercial-use free fonts- ones that are okay to use on things you sell. I try to limit myself to those whether I’m making something to sell or not because I know I’ll forget which ones aren’t ok after I’d installed them!

I adore how the distressing came out on this one! Just enough, not too much, not too little! Some across the letters and around the edges! I wish I had a better, closer view to show you, but I can’t even crop it to show you because this was taken before I got my DSLR!

And this one looks like it’s the exact opposite, but it’s actually just a white background with the vinyl letters stuck on. I took them right off of the first sign and put them on this board so that I can make another. Although I think it actually looks good just like this!

It’s the last day of the beach segment of my 31 days of making wood signs!

Today, I’m going to show you the small beach signs/blocks/ornaments that I’ve made!

I had a really rough scrap piece of wood that I bought on the scrap cart at Home Depot! I thought some really small hanging signs would look good made out of this wood!

Here’s a look at all the different ones I made….

And a better look at just the beachy ones!

(Totally looks like these are on sand, huh?! It’s my driveway! Ha!)

The hubby bought a circular saw for Christmas, but I made these before then, so I had my dad help me out! I painted the boards the letter color, he cut them, I drilled the holes.

Later I added my stencils I cut, spray painted over the letters and removed them to reveal the words beneath, then strung them up with jute twine.

I used a lot of these on my Christmas tree last year, and sent several to my best friend!

I also made these beachy blocks that are perfect for setting on a shelf.

Continuing with our beach theme, here are a few more beach signs that I have made……

Beach house in teal and aqua! Love this on this rough pine board. The teal behind the yellow easily peeks through without any distressing.

I thought these “Sail Away” signs would be adorable in a little boys nautical nursery. In fact, I planned on using one if my second was a boy! Since I have two girls though, no nautical nursery here!

I first made a Flip Flop Junkie sign here, and it was such a popular gift that I decided to make another, smaller one.

Beach weekend is continuing!

Yesterday I showed you my beach subway art, today I’m going to show you how I was inspired by a pillow to make some beach art.

Inspiration is ALL around us! I see things everywhere I go that I think would make great signs!

I came across this pillow on completely-coastal.com (fellow beach lovers, this blog is a MUST to follow!!). Not a sign, but it should be, right?!

You can buy this pillow here for about $19. Not a bad price. Except I knew that I could make it!

Here’s how mine turned out!

I made a stencil with my silhouette, pretty much following the same directions as here, except since it was for fabric, I used freezer paper, and ironed the stencil down on to the fabric (drop cloth!) before I painted on acrylic paint mixed with fabric medium.

I’ve seriously been needing some pillows for my couch! It’s an enormous sectional, that I love the comfort of, but don’t love the style necessarily, so it needs some accessorizing!

You can see I still need more!! Working on that!

I definitely thought that this should be a sign too, and would go perfectly in my brightly colored, beachy guest bathroom.

I made one using my silhouette to make a stencil (Go here to day 3 to see how), and then used the negative to make another one!

I can’t find one of them to take a good picture of both but here is a pic I snapped right after with my cell.

And this one is hanging in my guest bath-

I absolutely love the signs and the pillow!!! Great inspiration. And seriously, if I have the people I love around me, and I’m at the beach…life is perfection!

If I had to restrict myself to only ever making one type of sign, hands down it would be beach signs!

I’ve drooled over beach signs for years and years, even collecting more than my fair share of them. And now I can make any one my heart so desires! Fortunately, my best friend is JUST as beach obsessed as I am (and so is her mom!) so I do have others to make beach signs for!

Beach signs were also my best sellers at my most recent craft fair!

I’m going to spend the weekend talking about and showing you some of my beach signs and featuring some from around blog land.

Today, I want to show you my beach subway art!

This piece of beach subway art that I made for my best friend, was actually the very first sign I ever made!

I already showed you this one on Day 3 when I went over making signs with your own stencils. I made this for my best friend, a reminder of all the beaches we have been to together in North Carolina. I also did a full post on just this sign last year when I actually made it!

Awhile later, I made this one for my living room, with beaches my husband and I have been to together. It does have a few of the same as with my best friend, since we’ve been to some together with her and her husband! You can definitely tell I’ve known my best friend longer than my husband since her sign has more beaches! Haha!

I’m looking forward to hitting some more beaches so that I can make some more beach subway art!

So far I have gone over where to find your supplies (see wood and other supplies) and 8 different methods to make signs (some of them including more than one method!)
