The iPhone 5 - Coming June 2012

The all new iPhone 5 is already buzzing with speculation. Will the iPhone 5 be a complete redesign? Yes! The current Apple iPhone release wasn't much to rave about, although people do really like Siri, the personal assistant. However, the iPhone 5 is going to have some amazing new hardware and features like 3D video and pictures, newly designed keyboards and 4G speeds to name a few!

The new iPhone 5 is going to be loaded with awesome new features like video chat on 3g and 4g (no longer restricted to WiFi only), face recognition and extreme downloading. Also there is a new chat service between Apple devices! Similar to the blackberry messenger service. It has also been integrated into the SMS/MMS application used originally on the iPhone models. (List of possible features below). The new iPhone 5 features are speculated, these features are well received by the public and will typically follow suit based on previous releases and their features.

This iPhone 5 will be equipped with a two A5 chip processors and higher more powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions (5-9 times better and 7 times faster) and amazing "still" images when taking pictures, AND it will make multi-tasking a lot faster, in addition to adding support for 4G speeds. The processor will have speeds at 1.5 - 2.0 GHz and 1GB of RAM. Obviously the new iPhone 5 will have iMessage, iOS5, iCloud and all the standard features of the iPhone 4S, including Siri the personal assistant. These improvements alone will be healthy competition for the newly released Samsung Galaxy S II.

Apple recently filed several patent applications in order to bring 3D picture capturing to the iPhone 5. This phone will be capable of rendering, capturing and processing 3D images, which coincides with the recent changes to the dual-camera hardware. The new iPhone 5 will also be capable of taking pictures in Panorama!

The new iPhone 5 will boast 4G also known as LTE (Long Term Evolution) speeds, according to AT&T which is due to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) which is in line with the most recent technology standards for mobile networks.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S, a faster version of its best-selling smartphone that includes a virtual "personal assistant" you can talk to. And now, Apple will release the iPhone 5, which looks promising in terms of being sleek, packed with new hardware and finally less restrictions. Very exciting! So, what'd you have in the office pool? iPad 3, iPad 2S, iPad HD? Doesn't matter, really. All that matters is that it's here! This is the next generation of Apple's iOS slate and, as usual, she's a beaut -- and yes, she's still rockin' a physical button. As was rumored this thing is packing a Retina Display, potentially making this the most pixel-packed slate on the market. The 9.7-inch screen plays host to 3.1 million pixels in a 2048 x 1536 arrangement -- that's 264ppi. It's not just a higher resolution though, the screen also boasts improved color saturation. Of course, what would a new iPad be without some updated guts. The new model has an A 5X Processor and quad-core graphics chip. Apple even claims its newest sliver of silicon can deliver four times the performance of a Tegra 3 -- we'd say dems fightin' words.

There's also a new i Sight Camera on board that's quite similar to the version inside the iPhone 4S. It's only five-megapixels, but it does have a backside illuminated sensor with a five element lens. It's also capable of capturing 1080p video, which should come as no surprise. We're also excited to see the keyboard sporting a brand new dictation key that lets you speak instead of type -- yes, just like on Android. The new software inside will also let you use the slate as a portable WiFi hotspot... so long as the carriers are game. It even has the ability to recognize at least some bezel gestures, as revealed during its iPhoto Demo.

Perhaps most exciting though, is the new connectivity options -- you guessed, LTE! The new iPad is sporting 21Mbps HSPA+, but it's also rocking an LTE radio capable of pulling down 73Mbps on both Verizon and AT&T here in the US. Outside of the states Rogers, Bell and Telus will also be scoring 4G flavors of the iOS tablet. Amazingly enough, even with an LTE antenna on board, Apple is still claiming to get 10 hours of battery life. That's probably partially do to the slightly increased weight of 1.4lbs, though the 9.4mm thickness is nothing to sniff at.

The new iPad will be available March 16th, starting at $499 for the 16GB WiFi model and scaling up to $829 for the 64GB version with 4G. So, on the price front, nothing has changed. Pre-orders start today in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, with much of the rest of the globe to follow on March 23rd. Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight hands-on

What's American's number one problem in the bedroom? Honestly, whatever you first guessed is probably the right answer. For the sake of this conversation, however, let's just assume that it's light, as Barnes & Noble suggests. People are keeping their partners awake at all hours by leaving the light on as they finish the final gripping pages of that Stieg Larsson novel. There's got to be a better way! Something like, say, the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight (make sure to put little sparkly illustrations over the last word when you read it aloud, by the way).

As you'd imagine, it can see in the dark. -- or, rather, you can see it in the dark, so you won't have to get kicked out of bed for reading The Hunger Games anymore. The clunkily named Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight is up for pre-order now at $139 a pop. Plunk down your information today, and it should be on its way to you in early May -- just in time for Mother's Day and with a bit of time to spare for 'ole pops. So, how does the reader stack up to its predecessor? Click on through to the other side to find out.

For all intents and purposes, the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight is exactly like the original Nook Simple Touch. We're talking the same stubby body, TI processor, 2GB of storage, microSD slot and six-inch Pearl E Ink display with infrared touch. Oh, and the rubberized page turn buttons on the sides of the screen, the little "n" home button on the bottom and that power button on the rear are all in tact. The concave back cover that makes it easy to hold the reader one-handed? That's the same, too.

There are a few distinctions, though: the border around the perimeter of the device is lighter, so you wont accidentally pick the wrong device out of a pile (think of the slight difference in color between the Nook Colour and Tablet). The device is also a bit lighter than its predecessor -- five percent, to be exact -- a change significant enough that seasoned Simple Touch users might actually notice if they were to compare the two. Really perceptive folks might also pick up on the screen, which feels slightly more textured. This is due to the anti-glare technology screen overlay B&N added to compensate for the differences in screen. All of which brings us to the main thing distinguishing the two devices.

The centerpiece of the Nook SimpleTouch with GlowLight is, naturally, that illuminated screen. The reader uses a patent-pending technology Barnes & Noble built in-house, which shines a light from over the top of the screen. The illumination is triggered by holding the "n" button down for two seconds. You can adjust the brightness by clicking the button again and sliding the dial on a Quick Settings screen. Half brightness should be enough to keep you reading in a dark room. You can also turn the light off here or just hold down the "n" button again.

The light is actually quite well distributed on the display. You'll notice a bit of a gradient at the top, near the light source, but after reading for a bit, odds are you'll completely forget about it. We used it for a bit in a darkened room, and it's really a pleasant reading experience, staying true to most of the benefits of e-ink. We asked Barnes & Noble reps how the resulting eye strain compares to a back-illuminated device like the iPad, and while they refused to say anything conclusive, they conceded it should be "equal or less" to what you'd experience on such a device.

Battery life, on the other hand, is much better. The Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight should give you an estimated month of reading time, according to B&N's numbers, compared to two months with the light off. That second number matches the rating for the standard Simple Touch -- the battery, like the rest of the hardware, is identical. The price, however, is a bit of a jump. At $139, it's $40 more than Simple Touch, and will be sold alongside that device (albeit in a darkened case that gives you a better idea of its powers). That premium might be a bit rich for some people's blood, though keep in mind that that price is the same as the WiFi Kindle Touch once you drop the "Special Offers." If the rumor mill is to be believed, however, Amazon's likely got some competition on the way.

In the meantime however, it may well be worth the $40 investment to make sure you don't get booted out of the bed again any time soon.

But there are still some wrinkles here who were responsible for the performance of Q4 iPhone:

New MacBook Pro Release Coming Soon? Apple Stops Selling Laptops Online

Looks like that new MacBook Pro may be dropping very soon: Customers looking to buy one can't buy one for the next three to five days, at least not online.

9 to 5 Mac first saw the online stall in shipping MacBook Pros, news that's in line with the latest flurry of rumors suggesting Apple plans to release new MacBook Pros as soon as Thursday, February 24th.

Recently, Engadget spotted five new SKUs in the Best Buy system, with prices at $1,199, $1,499, $1,799, $2,199 and $2,499 in the company's online Laptop Configuration tool, each named a "New SKU" with the availability marked as "Coming Soon".

Apple Insider also caught wind that Apple has notified several of its European retailers to expect some "sealed packages" this week, warning them not to open them until told to do so. Apple's move to stall sales of the older MacBook Pro may help stave off the buyer's dismay customers feel when a new model of gadget arrives just after they've purchased the last one.

The New York Times has apparently confirmed that Apple is working on a cheaper iPhone, aimed to broaden the devices appeal in the face of an increasingly competitive mobile landscape. The NYT also disputes some of the past claims regarding new iPhones from WSJ and Bloomberg, specifically that the cheaper device won’t be smaller than the existing iPhone 4.

Another person who is in direct contact with Apple also said that the company would not make a smaller iPhone at this time, in part because a smaller device would not necessarily be much cheaper to manufacture and because it would be more difficult to operate.

More important, a phone with a smaller screen would force many developers to rewrite their apps, which Apple wants to avoid, the person said.

This is interesting because the language specifically addresses the disadvantages of a smaller screen, to me this continues to suggest the new cheaper iPhone will use the same screen as the existing iPhone 4. Maybe this is a controlled leak to alleviate some of the concerns voiced in the developer community about working with another iOS screen resolution?

The New York Times also specifies that the new iPhone will be ready this summer, perhaps at the rumored date of WWDC 2011 and iPhone 5 launch.

Wireless Syncing via Free MobileMe
Finally, backing up prior reports, a new free version of MobileMe will also be released that allows for wireless syncing, according to the NYT:

“The goal is that your photos and other media content will eventually just sync across all your Apple devices without people having to do anything,”

Wireless syncing and easily accessible cloud storage have long been desired by the Apple community. The New York Times did not specify a timeline for the relaunch of MobileMe, but we assume it would be made available along with the new cheaper iPhone, iPhone 5, and a new version of iOS.

Bloomberg is reporting that a smaller, and cheaper, version of the iPhone is on Apple's agenda "aimed at slowing the advance of competing handsets based on Google Inc.’s Android software". The report states that a prototype has been knocked up and that the aim is to get it hitting shops, priced at $200 (non-contract ) in the "near mid-year" - whenever the heck that is. So let's crack open the beers and put on some Susan Boyle - because it's like 2009 all over again.

Back in January of that year, Tim Cook - who is now essentially in charge of Apple in Steve Jobs' absence - stated during the earnings call that Apple wouldn't be producing "low-end" devices and it didn't want to be the market leader when it comes to the number of units sold, it just wanted to make the best phone possible.

But that didn't stop the iPhone nano rumours from kicking up, although they proved fruitless.

Cook's stance during this year's earnings call was a bit different though. The Apple COO admitted that, regardless of its undoubted success, the iPhone is far from the number one smartphone and hinted at a market assault. "We also have a low share of the handsets market", he said. "So we are excited that there is great opportunity there.

"We are in some great markets, some fast moving markets. We have some great products in the pipeline. We feel very very confident".

Could one of those "great products" be a mini iPhone?

convinced, but with Nokia and Microsoft now teaming up - Apple is going to

have to do something to pread its love further afield.

Nokia’s 41-megapixel 808 PureView is now up for pre-order in Italy

Nokia unveiled its 41-megapixel cameraphone, known as the 808 PureView, at Mobile World Congress 2012, surprising all in attendance. And now the handset is officially up for pre-order in Italy.

Scheduled for a May release the Nokia 808 PureView is powered by Symbian Belle, features a 41-megapixel camera and will cost €599, according to online Italian retailer, NStore.

News of the device hitting pre-order comes via Engadget, which reports that Nokia is cooking up a Lumia-flavoured PureView handset as well. So if Symbian isn’t your bag – but you like the sound of a 41-megapixel camera – then you might want to hold fire until Nokia introduces this technology into one of its Windows Phone-powered devices.

Of course there’s no official word on when this is happening as yet or how Nokia plans on getting around Microsoft’s strict hardware regulations. But we guess all will become clear in time.

One thing is definitely certain though: USPs like a 41-megapixel camera will be very useful in the Windows Phone ecosystem. Hardware, after all, is the only way manufacturers can differentiate their devices.

The Nokia 808 PureView is expected to launch in Europe during May.

The NEW iPhone 5 - Coming June of 2012

The all new iPhone 5 is already buzzing with speculation. Will the new iPhone 5 be a complete redesign? Yes! The current Apple iPhone release wasn't much to rave about, although people do really like Siri, the personal assistant. However, the new iPhone 5 is going to have some amazing new hardware and features like 3D video and pictures, newly designed keyboards and 4G speeds to name a few! This is made possible by the new A6 processor which will also be featured in the iPad 3.

This phone is going to be loaded with awesome new features like video chat on 3g and 4g (no longer restricted to WiFi only), face recognition and extreme downloading with 4G. (List of possible features below). The new iPhone 5features are speculated, but have been well received by the public and will typically follow suit based on previous releases and their features.

Like the recently release iPad 3, this new iPhone 5 will be equipped with a dual core A5X chip processors, much like the iPhone 4s (A5) and higher more powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions (5-9 times better and 7 times faster) and amazing "still" images when taking pictures, AND it will make multi-tasking a lot faster, in addition to adding support for 4G speeds. There is a possibility it could contain the new A6 processor instead, boosting it above the iPad 3. It will also have a 4 inch screen (corner to corner) making it larger and on par with most android phones.

The processor will have speeds at 1.5 - 2.0 GHz and 1GB of RAM. Obviously the new iPhone 5 will have the new iOS6 software, iCloud and all the standard features of the iPhone 4S, including Siri, the personal assistant. These improvements alone will be healthy competition for the newly released Samsung Galaxy S II and the Google Nexus phone.

Apple recently filed several patent applications in order to bring 3D picture capturing to the iPhone 5. This phone will be capable of rendering, capturing and processing 3D images, which coincides with the recent changes to the dual-camera hardware. The new iPhone 5 will also be capable of taking pictures in Panorama!

The new iPhone 5 will boast 4G also known as LTE - Long Term Evolution technology according to AT&T which is due to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) which is in line with the most recent technology standards for mobile networks.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 4S, a faster version of its best-selling smartphone that includes a virtual "personal assistant" you can talk to. And now, Apple will release the new iPhone 5, which looks promising in terms of being sleek, packed with new hardware and finally less restrictions. Very exciting! The sixth generation of Apple's vaunted iPhone—the iPhone 5—is expected to arrive in Apple stores worldwide in October 2012, approximately one year after the launch of the iPhone 4S. Google's Android, nipping at its heels for years, is expected to overtake Apple's iPhone in market share this year, putting Apple on the defensive. If there ever were a time for the iPhone to woo and wow potential buyers, now would be it. The iPhone 5 should continue the biennial pattern of issuing a major overhaul the year after a more evolutionary model, like the 3GS and 4S.

With every new iteration, the questions on everyone's mind are:
1.What's new? (What are the new added features?)
2.What does it look like?
3.When does it come out exactly?

Launch date change: Apple is reputedly trying to make the iPhone more attractive as a holiday gift item, so has begun in 2011 to launch the new iPhone in the fall, as it has done with the iPhone 4S. A fairly new iPhone is hot and not impossible to buy in late November or December, and will have not been upstaged by the latest Android phone by then. Expect October launches for iPhone from 2011 onwards.

While there is some speculation that the iPhone 5 might be available in the first half of 2012, that is unlikely. The popularity of the 4S suggests that Apple doesn't need to shorten the lifecycle of the iPhone just yet, and there is some speculation that the iPhone 5 might be released on October 5, in commemoration of Steve Jobs, who passed away on this day in 2011.

So far, Apple's been characteristically mum on the details on all future unannounced products, but the rumor mill and fake pictures are already starting to spring up.
Here's what we can probably expect:
4G: The iPhone 4 and 4S are belatedly available on Verizon in the United States (and the latter on Sprint), but 4G (LTE) is likely not going to be available until AT&T releases its own 4G service (HSPA+) nationwide, expected in later 2011 at the earliest. The iPhone 5, released in 2012, will likely be the first 4G iPhone available on all three US carriers (AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint). This is, admittedly, a disappointment for Verizon users, since its speedy LTE network will have been deployed for well over a year and accessible with competitive (read: Android) devices during that time.
Edge-to-edge, larger screen. The entire front face of the iPhone might be a screen, doing away with the physical home button, or possibly integrating it into the display itself. Rumors suggest the screen will grow from 3.5 inches to 4 inches.

Wireless charging. Removing the need for a port-cable connection for charging, the iPhone 5 might employ inductive charging, where the iPhone is placed on a charge mat and the phone battery is charged by induction. You can easily imagine buying mats for your desk, car, and elsewhere where your iPhone is typically lying around losing its charge. Since iOS 5 enabled data sharing over the air, inductive charging might allow the iPhone to finally ditch cords altogether.
Faster chip. With each successive Apple mobile operating system, increased complexity and added features create strains on the processor. Apple is likely to move away from working with Samsung, with whom it has a number of outstanding patent lawsuits underway, and move to an updated, quad-core A6 chip, which the iPhone 5 will share with the iPad 3. The A6 is likely to be produced by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and tested/packaged by Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL), both based in Taiwan. The A6 offers performance and energy usage improvements over the A5, using a more advanced 28-nanometer fabrication process, over the A5's 40-nanometer process.
Polysilicon (p-Si) touchscreen mounted on Gorilla Glass. The Japanese newspaper, Nikkan, has reported a rumor that the 2012 iPhone will switch to a new display material that will enable it to be thinner, lighter, and less power-intensive than current displays. If even the last claim is accurate, that will be a major boon to battery life, since a phone's display is typically the largest draw on power. This display technologically will putatively be manufactured by Sharp, starting the spring of 2012 ahead of the phone's summer launch.
Gorilla Glass, a Corning innovation, resists breakage far better than any other commercially-available glass. Coupled with the p-Si touchscreen, the iPhone 5 will likely be the brightest- and toughest-screened
iPhone yet.

More memory. The iPhone app store shows no signs of abating in popularity, and without SD card memory expansion in Android phones, Apple will up the phone storage options available. Expect 64GB and 128GB variants.

Improved battery. The iPhone 5 might be the first to use the organic radical battery (ORB) technology developed by Japan's NEC, which is more environmentally-friendly than current lithium ion batteries that have dangerous heavy metals. ORB also boasts an absurdly fast recharge time (about 30 seconds) and higher energy density (will be able to pack more power into a smaller battery).

Better camera. The iPhone 5 might be the first iPhone to cross the 10 million pixel threshold with its camera (the iPhone 4S boasts an 8 MP camera), unsurprising as high-resolution images have always been a hallmark of Apple's products.

Near-Field Communication (NFC) chip. Debuted on the Samsung Nexus S and possibly implemented on the iPhone in the 5th generation product, this newest hardware addition enables contactless communication between a phone and objects similarly embedded NFC capabilities. This should eventually enable things like paying via credit card by holding your phone over a terminal for a second, or paying for things from vending machines using your phone. The technology is similar to Bluetooth although it uses less energy and establishes a connection far more quickly (although at a much closer range - a few inches away instead of yards away).
The most compelling reason for not installing an NFC chip is that the technology has really been Google's bailiwick, since adoption of the technology at POS (point of sale) retail terminals has been pushed by Google Wallet. Apple might strategically choose to lag here.

Form factor improvements. Apple puts a tremendous amount of emphasis on the sleekness of its products. The iPhone 5 will be no exception, with a modern, lightweight, and thin look. Expect some surprises in terms of shape and, especially, materials, as Apple hopes to push the envelope and fend off attacks from Android handmakers, its largest competition.

Case material improvements. To round out the environmental friendliness of the new device, more advanced, naturally-sourced plastics might be used in the case. For example, isoplast polymers might replace the previously used polycarbonate case manufactured with BPA (bisphenol-A). The glass back used in the iPhone 4 has had too many breakage issues, although Gorilla Glass would make the glass far less fragile.

Improved antenna design. After the fiasco of the iPhone 4's wraparound metal antenna, Apple has to make some ground in reception in its new overhaul. This has been addressed somewhat by iOS 5 already, which purports to choose between two sets of antenna based on the strength of the signal. But for the 2012 iPhone, expect a new antenna that doesn't require a special case or on-the-fly antenna selection to avoid "death grip" interference. This will probably be a benefit that Apple will not make a whole lot of fuss about, since it would only draw attention to the iPhone 4's serious shortcoming, and because it was supposedly addressed via iOS 5.

Possible innovations and features

Apple usually includes something unique and technologically cutting-edge into each iteration of the iPhone (like the smudge-proof screen in the 3G and glass case in the iPhone 4 and 4S). Here are some long-shot possibilities for the iPhone in 2012:
the case could be made of the battery itself (lithium ion polymer), reducing weight and improving battery life
the button could be phased out, replaced with a virtual button on-screen
face or thumb recognition as a security measure
the phone could be a Wifi hub using the carrier 4G connection
a "pico-projector" - video can be projected a short distance onto a flat surface
a clear "window phone" in which the phone could be transparent

What do we know so far?
Toshiba Mobile Display Company is building a $1.2 billion factory to produce LCD panels for the iPhone 5. The factory is scheduled to be operational in the second half of 2011, ready to produce iPhone 5 displays for the 2012 launch.
A consortium of three Japanese display manufacturers - Toshiba, Hitachi, and Sony - are merging their mobile display businesses in early 2012. They are reportedly working on a 4-inch (10.1 cm) display that is rumored to be used in the iPhone 5.
