How Fetal Dopplers Work

Fetal Doppler technology is based on the Dopple shift principle. This theory was first discovered by Christian Doppler an Austrian physicist in 1842. Doppler discovered that sound waves from a moving source would be compressed or expanded, or that the frequency would change.
Doppler work on the principle of listening to reflections of small, high frequency sound waves (ultrasound). These ultrasound waves are generated by microscopic vibrations of piezoelectric crystals. When the waves are reflected from moving objects, such as a foetal heart the frequency changes slightly. It is this change that is analysed by the electronics of the Doppler and converted into a sound that you can hear or a digital display of the heart rate.

Is fetal doppler use safe for my baby?

Just got back from a lovely trip to Sunny Florida with the family.

At the last possible packing minute, I decided to throw in a MediBuddy thinking maybe I would get a chance to try it out. Well...did we ever. DAILY!

Travelling to Disney with the Kids: Tips, Tricks and Reality Check

A Disney vacation can be one of the most unforgettable experiences of a child's life.

I still remember my first trip to Disney when I was 6 years old. Everything seemed so magical and exciting. My fondest memories were that of of It's a Small World and the Peter Pan Ride. I must admit that on my last trip to Disney I begged everyone to go straight to The Peter Pan ride, but I didn't get the reaction that I was expecting. My kids were scared stiff and afraid of the dark ride. It's a Small world was definitely more their thing!

Now, as an adult I look at the trip in an entirely different way, more of a challenge with the kids and I know proper planning is the key to success! Our little crew consisted of a 3 and 5 year old, I was 5 months pregnant and my 3 year old was also in mid potty-training! Some called me crazy, but I think of it as more of an adventure. A trip to Disney with preschool aged kids in any case is exciting, fun and exhausting. Proper planning will help make the trip enjoyable for both parents and kids alike.

Getting there: The easiest way to get to Disney World for us in Canada is by plane. If you are staying at one of the Disney hotels, ground transportation from the Orlando airport is available. I highly recommend this option (see below). Once your luggage is checked in at the airport, it will arrive in your room shortly after you check in. This is a major help when you have toddlers to chase around. Just grab your carry-on and go! Providing a little bit of entertainment while waiting in airport lines is also important. Our Trunki ride-on luggage came along for the trip and the kids rode them around the airport the entire time.

Air Travel with Kids: Flying with kids can be a real challenge. Thankfully a flight to Florida is not too far (at least from Montreal it's about 3 hours). We all fear the 30,000 ft high meltdown. Trapped on a plane with an inconsolable toddler having a crisis. But there are many things we can do to help avoid this. First, pack some new goodies for your little ones. (We used our Trunkis) Games, colouring books and toys are great items. Disney themed books are great too. They can be rationed throughout the flight. Our kids loved their Leap Pads and we loaded them up with new games before the flight. Second, most major carriers like Air Canada and West Jet have in seat entertainment systems. They really have a great selection of movies and TV shows for the kids. Unfortunately my own system didn't work on the way down, so be prepared just in case. And finally, pack loads of snack food. With all of the restrictions it is definitely a challenge to pack healthy food from home, but you can take crackers and other dry foods without a problem. Once through customs, you can purchase drinks and healthier options,but at a higher price. I highly recommend bringing food and be prepared for the unexpected. Don't assume you can buy your meal on the plane. We were delayed on board the plane for 1 hour and everyone was getting hungry. By the time the food cart came to us during the actual flight, all of the kid friendly food was sold out. Try telling your little guy that they are all out of that pizza you promised him for being a good boy for the last hour.

Getting to hotel: Disney hotels are amazing and staying on-site has its advantages. Complimentary airport transportation service, known as Disney's Magical Express, is complimentary roundtrip airport transportation and luggage delivery for Guests of select Walt Disney World Resort hotels. Book this service when making your reservations and you will be sent luggage tags. All you need to do is put them on your suitcase and you are good to go! We used this on our last trip and it was a real help. After landing, we picked up our stroller and headed right down to the magical express, waited in line for the next bus and were on our way. Look out for the Disney Cruise line, they seem to round wandering passengers :)

Settling in: Once you check into your hotel, take some time to scout out the pools, grounds, restaurants and other amenities at your resort. Some of the resorts have multiple pools with water slides, snack bars and scheduled outdoor movie nights. Spending a day or two at the pool will give mom and dad a break from chasing the kids around the crowded parks. Plus there's never a line up to get in a pool.

Meal plan: Make sure to book your meal plan and meal reservations well in advance. The best restaurants and ones with character dining book up months ahead of time. The meal plan works on a point system. The Disney Dining Plan includes one (1) Quick-Service Meal, one (1) Snack, and one (1) Table-Service Meal per person, per night of your package stay for everyone in the party ages 3 and over. The plan also includes one (1) Resort refillable drink mug per person, that is valid for the length of your stay. Keep track of your points and plan your meals ahead of time and you will save lots of money! Don't bother with the deluxe dining plan unless you have a major appetite. I highly recommend the breakfast at Cinderella's Castle. It takes 2 points but all of the princesses visit each table and a photo, magic wand and princess sing-a longs are included!

Transportation to parks: No need to rent a car at Disney. Transportation to all of the Disney parks is free from the resort hotels. Buses run about every 10-15 minutes until the parks close. Transportation by boat and the Monorail is also available at selected resorts. Get to the buses fast after the closing fireworks as they can fill up quickly.

Fast Pass and More: Guests staying on site have access to extended park hours privileges. Get more bang for your buck and flexibility by checking the extended park hours before you go. This also helps with dinner or breakfast planning. And don't forget to use the fast pass system. Grab your fast passes as soon as you get into the park. This allows you to come back at a time indicated and skip a large portion of the line.

Souvenirs: Buy your gifts at downtown Disney on the last day. It's easy to drop hundreds of dollars in the parks if you start buying gifts on day 1. We bought 1 gift for our own children a few days in and avoided the gift shops as much as possible. Little ones easily melt down from all the excitement. This saved us lots of money in the end.

Travel Home: Finally it's time to head back home. The kids may be a bit stressed after the long week. It's important to have all the same entertainment and snacks as the flight down. I figure if you made it this far, you'll be OK. Just don't forget to pack a change of clothes for the kids and even a few diapers in case any accidents happen.

In the end, Disney is a great family destination for children of all ages. My advice is to make sure you plan ahead and enjoy.

Long or short road trips in our family's automobile is an exercise in patience, creativity and contortionism (is that even a real word?. Let me explain...My two boys aged 3 and 6 are OBSESSED with Lego and any toys with smaller than smaller parts. However, this leads to dropped pieces, screams and wails... which then leads Mom into a complicated yoga sequence of spine twists, lunges and downward dogs in order to save the precious piece and complete their "creations". Which leads me to the Star Kids Snack and Travel Tray from Bebegogo. This tray works like a charm and keeps peace amongst my little builders. How to Survive a Summer Road Trip with the Kids.

Two years ago, I decided to take our family on a road trip to Maine. At the time I didn't think it would be a challenge. My son was 6 months old and my daughter was 2. We didn't really have a plan for entertaining the kids on the ride. Then again, how do you entertain a 6 month old in a rear facing car seat for that amount of time. The fact that the little one was breastfeeding made it even more of a challenge.

Turns out that the ride was a total disaster and my husband and I vowed to never again attempt such a long ride with our children. We really enjoyed our vacation, but not the travel aspect. Well like most traumatic experiences, the bad memories faded and we decided to try it again 2 years later. This time the kids were a little older and we had a plan!

First we mapped out our root and looked for a few places to stop on the way. We found some very nice parks in Maine to have a picnic. A stream or a river nearby is always a plus. We made sure to pack lunches and bring plenty of snacks for our breaks. I will admit that we had a DVD player in the car and we picked up a couple of Disney movies for the ride as well. But TV can only entertain the children for so long..

I chose a few toys from the BebeGoGo store that I thought were appropriate for travel with young children. My picks were the Star Kids Snack N' Play Travel Tray. This tray quickly creates a solid surface for kids to play on. This really helps to prevent the "Mommy, I dropped my toy" scenario.

We brought along our Trunkis to pack all of our stuffed animals and games for the ride. Children really enjoy having their own luggage like mom and dad.

Finally, the Octo Beach Tote by Melissa and Doug was excellent for carrying our sand toys as well. The net on the sides allows for water to drain out and the kids love the cool design

Looking for a fun activity to do with the kids this weekend? Why not check out the Butterflies Go Free exhibit at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. Little ones will have a blast as they discover the colourful flowers and butterflies throughout the greenhouse. We recommend leaving the stroller behind since it can get a little crowded.

The exhibit is open this year until April 25th. Visit the Botanical Garden's website for additional details.

A number of diverse plants can be seen throught the exhibit.
