Abrams was off making a little movie called Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the third installment of the Star Trek reboot was in the middle of production. Since most of Abrams' time was preoccupied elsewhere, the studio turned to Justin Lin to direct Star Trek: Beyond. Now if that name sounds familiar, it should. Lin has directed four of the Fast and Furious movies.

But despite the clear differences in directing style between Abrams and Lin, the heart of story remained because Simon Pegg, who plays the role of Montgomery Scott, had an integral part in the writing of the script. So on the surface, Star Trek: Beyond looked like the perfect summer blockbuster. And it was. It was loud, it was exciting, it was action-packed, and it was probably the best summer action movie from beginning to end this year.

It's difficult to think that this is the last time
they will all be on screen together

We first see the Enterprise crew three years into their five-year space mission. It's clear that the time in space has begun to take it's toll on Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Hikaru Sulu (John Cho). Without giving too much away, Kirk appears to be having an existential crisis of some sort, Spock and Uhura are having issues with their relationship, and Sulu hasn't seen his daughter in some time. The great thing about the beginning was we got to see how the rest of the crew operated during their downtime. To be frank, it's essentially a freshman dorm hall. But I digress.

With supplies dwindling, the Enterprise arrives at Yorktown, a new planet with advanced capabilities, to replenish, meet up with their families, and really just relax after so much time in space. But there was no rest for the weary as they were quickly confronted with a new issue. An approaching escape pod carrying Kalara, an alien who claimed her ship had been stranded in a nearby nebula, needed help. So out go the Enterprise crew to rescue her ship and crew only to be attacked by Krall (Idris Elba) and his group of "bees."

As the Enterprise is overrun, and eventually destroyed, the crew members escape the ship, but they end up separated from each other. It's an interesting strategy by Lin, pairing together the crew members for the majority of first half of the movie, creating interesting dialogue, especially between McCoy (Karl Urban) and Spock. McCoy's dry humor and metaphors combined with Spock's literal interpretations provides for cheap laughs to break up the monotony of their search. But while Spock and McCoy, Uhura and Sulu, and Chekov and Kirk are all paired off, Scotty is off on his own. That is until he stumbles upon Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), an alien who had been stranded on the planet after her family was killed by Krall and his lackies years before.

Is it weird to be attracted to a
black and white alien? Asking for a friend

For all intents and purposes, Jaylah is probably the best character of the entire film. It takes plenty of guts to introduce an entirely new character to a film franchise that has its diehards, but Lin, Pegg and Abrams pull it off perfectly. Not only do they portray Jaylah as an intelligent, resourceful total badass, but they also show her vulnerabilities later in the film as she's lost a great deal in her life. She's the key to everything, and she will be a much-welcomed addition to the Enterprise crew. Plus, it's apparent that by the end of the film that she has an monumentally high alcohol tolerance. Respect.

Eventually, the crew reunites and they are able to get everyone off the planet before they are killed. Unfortunately, Krall, armed with a bio-weapon, heads toward Yorktown with the full intention of destroying it. And it's up to the Enterprise crew to stop him. That's as far as I'll go. I don't want to give away the ending, but I will tell you the movie has the greatest usage of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in the history of cinema. I have no issue in saying that.

The one thing that bugged the hell out of me with this film is the lack of character development on the whole. These people have spent the last three years in space, but the amount of new information we learn about them is minimal. It definitely didn't match up to the previous two films, but maybe that was to be expected with a directorial change. But I figure that can all be forgiven since we know a decent amount about the main characters to begin with.

What can't be forgiven is we really have no idea why Krall is the way he is. We are given no reason as to why he wants to destroy the Yorktown and the Federation, other than he is a supervillain. That's it. In the first two films, we know why the Romulans want to destroy Spock, and we know why Khan wants to destroy the Federation. We get no inkling or reasoning behind Krall's constant need to take innocent lives.

For the record, while Elba does his best with this character, can we stop giving him roles of this nature? He is far too accomplished of an actor to have his face covered for an entire film.

But in general, it was a rather enjoyable two hours. What the movie lacked in character backstory, it certainly made up for with consistent, high-octane action throughout.

Ruby Rating: 4.5/5 gems

Well, well, well... the Ghostbusters are back, ladies and gentlemen. But predictably enough, there was unwarranted backlash toward the idea of rebooting the franchise. Look, I get it, Ghostbusters with Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis was a comedic masterpiece. I loved it. Nothing will ever top it, and to think the reboot would do so is just incredibly naive. The original has hung over the reboot since the first trailer dropped. This is what we like to do. As a country, we are so resistant to change, and we refuse to accept that something new could be as enjoyable as it was 30 years ago. Well guess what? It can.

But let's take a look at the clear difference: the leading cast members. They're women! It's 2016, everyone. Women can do stuff now. Oh, and by the way, they're just four of the funniest women on the face of the earth. Part of me wants to believe that four women starring in a major motion picture wasn't part of the backlash. But I'm not dumb. I know it was part of it. But if you were able to sit through Ghostbusters II, there is legitimately no reason not to check this movie out.

If you look closely, there aren't any
lenses in those glasses

To be frank, the most offensive part of the movie was Fall Out Boy singing the theme song. It was so bad that I won't even post the link here. You can find it for yourself. I definitely could've done without that.

And just to appease your appetite, yes, we see brief cameos from Murray, Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, Siguorney Weaver, Annie Potts, who played Janine Melnitz, and even this class 5 full-roaming vapor. Sorry, no Rick Moranis.

Here's a piece of advice: Don't walk into the movie theater with any pre-conceived notions. Because if you sit down and begin to compare this Ghostbusters with the original Ghostbusters, you're going to walk out of the theater disappointed after wasting two hours of your life along with 25 bucks. Ghostbusters paid homage to the original while also separating itself from the previous two by highlighting the abilities of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Three of these ladies are current or former members Saturday Night Live, similar to the original cast. So the banter and the constant back-and-forth is natural and free.

There are lenses in her glasses

The movie starts with Erin Gilbert (Wiig) trying to earn tenure at Columbia University. But after discovering a book, which she believes is a less-than-flattering depiction of her, that she co-authored with her best friend Abby Yates (McCarthy) on Amazon, she tracks Abby down to have the book removed from the site. While visiting Abby, we meet Jillian Holtzmann (McKinnon), a truly eccentric tech genius.

Holtzmann and Yates were somehow able to convince Gilbert to go on a ghost hunt, which ultimately costs Gilbert, not only her tenure, but her job entirely. So the three set off on their own to track down the paranormal throughout the city. If that plot sounds familiar, it's supposed to be. The plot line in this reboot is essentially the same as the 1984 original, and I'm sure that was intentional. Add a non-scientist in Patty to the group and hire a less-than-perfect secretary in Kevin, and the plot is almost exactly the same. But that can be forgiven because, as a whole, the cast is just so damn funny. The foursome of McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon and Jones make up for the lack of imagination with sheer firepower.

While Wiig and McCarthy are seen as the heavy-hitters of the group, and their relationship is absolutely vital to making the movie to work, it's the utter weirdness of Holtzmann and the bluntness of Patty (Jones) that make this movie memorable.

I can't begin to describe how incredible McKinnon is in every aspect of the film, from the beginning through the final credits. Every group needs a wildcard, and she is it. But this wildcard just happens to be a tech prodigy, a perfect combination of Egon Spengler and Peter Venkman, who happens to thrive on the craziness of the situation. Whether that's fixing up a hearse or creating side gadgets to destroy ghosts, it's quirkiness that grants her the ability to steal every single scene that she is in.

It's a great summer flick that will provide more than a few laughs. Is it memorable? Probably not. But it really isn't a bad way to spend a couple of hours, and it's definitely a better alternative than the Republican National Convention.

Ruby Rating 3.5 gems
5. Because my favorite wrestler of all time, John Cena, is hosting. He does this for a living:

btw the rap in the video was written and recorded by Mr. Cena himself.

4. Because I might see an all time great inspirational speech like this one.

Or this one.

3. Because this team is going to own the night.

2. Fuck that. Because this man is going to own the night and I as a true believer cant miss that. (ever notice how Lebron doesn't go to the ESPY's the years he doesn't win a championship?)

1. Most importantly. Because its a fuckn Wednesday in the middle of fuckn July while the fuckn MLB is on its fuckn All-Star break and there is absolutely nothing else to do or watch.

Its debut concert took place less than a year ago, and the venue has been flooded with talented acts since. Relatively speaking of course. This is Central New York, an area that isn't blessed with visits from much hot new musicians. The smart ones will just book a gig 200 miles southeast of here.

So the lack of starpower at Lakeview so far may not be much of a surprise. Even the so-called "major acts" have been on the downward trajectory of their careers. Until Sunday night at least, when the band that seemingly never goes away came to play. And for Phish, it was a bit of a hometown show.

Their drummer John Fishman (make whatever puns you want) is CNY bred, and a graduate of Jamesville-DeWitt High School. He met guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, and keyboardist Page McConnell at the University of Vermont in the mid-1980s, and they've been playing together ever since.

Before we even get to the show itself, let that sink in. 30 years. 30 YEARS! Three decades of writing, practicing, travelling, and performing together. Somehow they're still going strong and haven't gotten sick of each other. Even if you can't stand their music, that's an accomplishment in and of itself. Most bands can't even stay together for three years, not without some major fireworks along the way.

It all speaks to the band's egalitarian nature. Anastasio is the defacto frontman, but every band member writes and sings lead vocals throughout the band's performances. And they all have specific characteristics that help to define the band. Whether it's Trey's slick riffs, Page's glistening vocals, or John's wardrobe, they're all bringing something to the table. Plenty of bands are perfectly fine plugging in new members, even a new lead singer. But you get the sense that, with Phish, it's either all of them or none of them.

Chilling in the studio for what must seem like the millionth time.

It's largely the same approach that many Phish Phans take to their beloved band. I was admittedly overwhelmed by just one show. I went with my younger brother. He's been to 13 of them, including three in the past three days. And his approach is rather tame compared to some. There's a large swath of people who will travel all across the country with these guys, experiencing dozens and dozens of performances every year. Phish says to never miss a Sunday show, but for many of their admirers it's crucial to not miss any show.

To the average listener, this probably seems crazy. It sure did to me, and frankly still does a little bit. But when you actually hear them play, it starts to make at least some sense. No two shows are alike. My brother Daniel told me Phish were playing several songs that he was hearing live for the first time, and even a couple that he had never heard before at all. That's absolutely staggering to think about, but the band has such a diverse and prolific catalog that it's entirely plausible. Not to mention all the covers they've mastered.

Last night I was truly floored by their renditions of "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" and "Frankenstein." Danny tells me they do a version of "Boogie on Reggae Woman" that's to die for, and I might have to see these guys again to make sure I catch it in person. One of the band's most famous sets took place on Halloween 1994, when they played through the ENTIRE FUCKING WHITE ALBUM! These covers stack possible set list combinations even higher for them, ensuring that every single show has its own unique flavor.

Phish themselves embrace the idea. Every ticket for every show they do comes with a code. If you go to their website and type in that code, you get a free download of that entire show in high quality audio. It's part of the reason why such an unusually high number of their concerts have an HD rendition on YouTube, and it's a very successful model. Many musicians seem to understand the growing value of live concerts, but only Phish seems to understand how to maximize it.

Their approach makes every concert a special event, for both the band and its spectators. With all the figurative (and literal) Phish Phumes wafting through the air, you can get lost in the ambiance. And as I stood smack dab in the middle of the amphitheatre's lawn, I got that kick too. The music propels you into movement; not necessarily dancing, but at least some form of a full-body sway or swerve. There were remarkable peaks and valleys of energy within the set. Styles vary from piano ballads to funk jams to edgy rock, and the band excels playing them all. For three hours, you get fully immersed in that sea of Phish.

At the end of their 2nd set (no opening act, two full sets of Phish) native son John Fishman, dress and all, wailed into his microphone, "thank you! Thank you, my people!" He may have meant it for his hometown, but you get the sense "his people" follow him wherever he goes. Independent of whatever neo-hippy stereotypes you have about them, Phish Phans share a love of live performance above all else. You have to truly love music for music's sake to take in a band like this.

And at their core, Phish's following is just like the four band members themselves: hard core music nerds. And they make up the best act that's made it's way to Central New York's new arena so far.

Top 20 TV Role Models

We all have them. It's a big part of the reason we watch certain TV shows. Either we relate to them or we want to be more like them, our TV role models are the characters that make shows worth watching. Here are my top 20.
Amongst NBA fans, Kevin Durant's decision has sparked rampant speculation about just how good the Warriors can be. And they all range somewhere between giddy analysis and borderline lunacy. But all the pundits seem to forget; if this superteam meets its full potential, it will be the exception, not the rule.

Managing that level of star talent is incredibly challenging. It applies not only to your favorite sports teams, but also to movies, TV shows, and bands. It's not clear whether the expectations become so outsized or the stars genuinely perform worse when playing in an ensemble, but the whole rarely meets the sum of its parts.

Assessing expectations is what makes this exercise tricky. I know 29 other franchises that would take back-to-back championships and four consecutive finals appearances in a heartbeat, but can the Heatles era in Miami really be considered a success? They certainly fell short of where Lebron James saw them landing...

And for that matter, couldn't it be argued that the Beatles themselves underachieved? Their peak was undeniably the highest in the history of pop music. But while contemporaries like the Stones and the Who are still kicking, the Beatles were essentially dead before the 1970s began. And that's all due to the egos that formed once all the members developed a god complex.

It's even worse when musicians decide to team up while their star power is still shining. Remember Young Money? If you didn't, I apologize for reminding you. But it featured standout talents like Drake and Lil Wayne, up-and-comers like Nicki Minaj and Tyga, and whatever Gudda Gudda is.

The Brady Bunch of hip-hop, but way funnier.

I'll admit that "Bedrock" was a big hit, but that's mostly thanks to the chorus sang by Lloyd, who as you may notice isn't a member of the group at all. If you take just these eight together? You effectively have nothing. It's an issue of stars and scrubs, in which the three truly talented members are drowned out by all the blahness of the remaining five. The G.O.O.D Music album deals with this slightly better, but there are still too many cooks in the kitchen. And even when everyone involved really does have star power, you can still run into problems.

We all assume that we want the most star-studded cast when we pick out which movies we're going to see. It's why trailers make such a point of telling which actors are in the movie in the first place. But there's a fine line between loaded and overloaded. Take Now You See Me, for instance. There's simply too much going on in that cast (it's even worse in this summer's sequel).

Not pictured: the two other members of the Screen Actors Guild

There are so many well-known actors, and so many actors well-known for performing with a specific personality or essence. A star power, if you will. But rather than make the movie shine brighter, this oversaturation winds up cancelling itself out. If you replace one of those big names with a lesser-known but just as talented character actor, perhaps it's an entirely different dynamic. But then it's not the supergroup everybody covets.

So why do so few of these all-star alliances fail? It's difficult to say considering they do so in so many different ways. And even when there is success, it can almost always be considered an underachievement because the demand was set so high.

The one possible thread we can find in common is a lack of complimentary talent. You can get two of the strongest paddlers in the world for a kayak race, but it doesn't do you much good if they have to paddle at completely different paces. It's what happened with the "your turn, my turn" Heatles and the "your song, my song" Beatles and any "your scene, my scene" movie you can think of. If you aren't going compliment each other with your skills, you may as well go it alone.

The widespread thinking with the new-look Warriors is that Kevin Durant can blend right in with Golden State's system. Their fans better hope that's true, or the past tells us this won't go nearly as well for them as the prognosticators expect.

No Limits Podcast: 2016 Knicks

No, I'm not gonna state the obvious here. There is no Game of Thrones on this list. No Breaking Bad. No Grey's Anatomy or Scandal. (go fuck yourself if you don't think those last 2 shows belong with the first 2)

No this list is about the underdogs. The shows that you thought were interesting when you saw the trailers but never quite followed through on that handshake agreement with yourself. The shows that you hear about once in a while from friends who are more sophisticated than you, or have more time on their hands (have you ever noticed how sophisticated people always have time for just about anything). The shows that will go down in history as the greatest shows you thought you were too good for not knowing at the time that you are, and almost certainly will always be, a nincompoop.

10. Greek

This show was so good I watched the first three seasons (72 episodes) in a week. A must watch for anyone ages 18-22 and is 100% the reason I joined a fraternity.

9. Orphan Black

Full disclosure: I haven't seen one second of this show but a friend, who's opinion I trust, told me to put this show on this list. So I did. I'm a good friend. Also this girl looks hot, I might have to watch.

8. Blue Mountain State

Hilarious show. Very bro. No show sums up what I want in life better.

7. Black Sails

If Game of Thrones and Pirates of the Caribbean had a baby, it would be this show. Yea, its that good. Also Charles Vane is the baddest motherfucker that ever lived.

6. Franklin and Bash

It's as if Zack and Screech grew up and became below average lawyers. Its Brogasmic.

5. Royal Pains

It's House but funnier and with more attractive people.

4. Hart of Dixie

This shows makes me want to leave New York and move to Alabama. Yes, you read that correctly. In many ways, this is the perfect show.

3. Happy Endings

Quite possibly the funniest show I have ever seen. I dare you to watch one episode of this show without having your stomach hurt from laughing too much. Also this show is about watch Coach does in between his stints in New Girl.

2. One Tree Hill

There are two kinds of people in the world. People that like One Tree Hill, and people who suck donkey dick. Ball is life. Also, Brooke Davis is the perfect woman, She is also the basis for every girl I've ever liked.

1. Everybody Loves Raymond

The best sitcom ever. Period.
