In the old flick 'The Outlaw Josie Wales,' Mr. Eastwood lectures some soft pioneers about how to get mad dog mean when you're in a fight to the death. There is truth in his lecture, but there is, especially if you are training in classical martial arts training, a falsehood.

The truth is that you have to raise up your desire to survive. You have to be willing to do more than you have ever done before. You have to be willing to fight harder and never give up.

The lie is that emotion increases your desire to win. To understand this, and other things concerning emotion and the martial arts, we have to define what, exactly, emotion is. The odd thing is that if you look in a dictionary you will not find a good definition.

Emotion is not 'mood,' or an 'instinctive state of mind,' and that sort of definition tells us nothing. So consider this definition: when somebody is unable to accept reality he/she creates a mental turmoil that is emotion. That's a good one, and I know because I made it up, but we have to look deeper if we are really going to understand emotion, it's value, and how to handle it.

The Neutronic definition for emotion is: 'Motion inside the head.' You get angry, and in your head you want to create motion (of some sort) towards somebody (hitting them in the head with a hammer). But it is all in your head, and, though that can be tapped into and used, it is also a little less than real.

So, think about this: when you punch somebody, would you put energy into your knee? Sort of a waste of energy, eh? What you want to do, as a martial artist, is put energy into and only into the fist.

When you direct energy into body parts other than the one(s) being used you are not being efficient in your motions. This same idea holds true in the subject of emotion. Energy put into emotion is not energy put into the desire to win; to win it is best if we get mad dog cool and determined, not extra angry.

Emotion is not to be discouraged, for emotion is a handle by which we can read others, release our own feelings, experience love, and that sort of thing. However, emotion in a fight can inhibit a person's will to fight. When it comes to Karate Kumite you must increase your desire to win without falling into emotion, or trying to use emotion in any way.

Martial Arts are, by and large, about self defence. Did you know, for example, that Tai Chi chuan - popularly known as just Tai Chi - is actually a martial art whose name translates literally as 'supreme ultimate fist'! That's right, that gentle exercise beloved of Japanese car manufacturers to wake up the workers, is actually a form of fighting!

These defence arts come in many variations and each has its claim to be the best and the one to study is a matter of personal choice, general fitness and ability. Steven Seagal, the legendary actor, a term used loosely here, is in reality a 7th degree black belt in Aikido which forms the basis of his groovy moves on film. Aikido is based on the principle that when an attacker strikes he leaves a part of himself vulnerable. Joint locks are key as they do not need speed to perform and easily immobilise an opponent.

The late Bruce Lee was an exponent of Wing Chun Kung Fu an art he considered too slow and formal when fighting martial arts experts. Lee invented his own version and won by using Wing Chun's signature punches, rapid fire blows to the chest area whilst always moving forward augmented by straight or roundhouse kicks. This is a very effective discipline.

As mentioned there are a variety of other fighting arts. Jui Jitsu is popular with police forces as it can be used to manipulate joints and enables control of the opponent. Adding to the list Judo and Karate will be familiar to readers but the Keysi Fighting Method, a modern close-in fighting advance on Tae Kwon Do, probably isn't although you have seen it in Chris Nolan's Batman films - how else could our hero defeat twenty villains? Well, he could follow Jason Bourne's lead and fight with Escrima, a Philippine art using weapons that come to hand. In the Bourne movies this included a rolled up newspaper and a ball point pen! The character also appears to fight with the no-holds-barred Krav Maga, from Israel, which seems to incorporate the best elements of many other disciplines.

All this talk of fighting misses the point, however. In fact, there are many benefits to participating in martial arts training and first among them is self control. Proper martial arts training emphasises the need to resolve conflicts peacefully and physical reaction is a last resort. Any age group can participate and there are fitness benefits for all. Parents wanting to instil self esteem and self confidence in their children could do worse than encourage them to learn and, indeed, it is a pastime that the whole family can enjoy.

There are many clubs around the country offering a variety of disciplines so why not give it a try and then maybe you won't be for the chop!
It is a martial art which requires the full use of both feet and fist. Thus, when translated literally, it means the way of the hand and the foot. It is a combat technique used as a means of self defence, as a sport, an exercise. There are cases where it is even used as a means of meditation. In the term of the number of practitioners, it is the most popular martial art in the world.

Kickboxing is the Japanese equivalent of the Korean martial art and like the Korean art; it is also a martial art which combines the effective use of hands and feet. This martial art is mostly seen as a form of combat sport which gained popularity since 1990. Although the sport reached the American audience around the 1970s, it failed to gain much popularity. It was not until the eighties that the sport reached Europe in full force. However, around this time, the sport's popularity dropped among the Japanese crowd. The sport then regained its popularity among the Japanese and among the American and European audience around the nineties, and since then, it is a very popular sport throughout the world.

Both of these martial arts are popular forms of contact sports as well as an excellent means of self defence. These sports require extensive training to hone the mind and the body to reach the highest form of mastery. This is why most of these martial arts prefer to take in younger apprentices as these young apprentices can be melded into any form since they are young and are still flexible. Young learners can, in most cases, reach a higher proficiency level than adult learners. However, given the more aggressive nature of kickboxing, it is not common to see young learners in this sport.

Martial arts have found its way even into the Olympic Games. Taekwondo is a fully fledged Olympic sport making the sport even more popular among enthusiasts. The rules of the match are set by governing bodies of the sport like the world taekwondo federation which governs the rules for the sparring matches in the Olympics.

In contrast to taekwondo, kickboxing is not an Olympic sport, but the popularity of the sport is by no means negligible. It has reached such a large audience count that the sport hosts its own world event. It is hosted by the international kickboxing federation and is the largest such event.

The practice of such sports is not just for the sake of reaching the top, or competing in world events. The most important thing that these sports provide is the opportunity to remain healthy through proper exercise of the body and as these sports require full body involvement, it provides the most effective health control.

Taekwondo is an Olympic level sport to develop self-defence skills in Melbourne martial arts and kickboxing with taekwondo academy, lessons, A focus on mental and ethical discipline, justice, etiquette, respect, and self-confidence.
Some people actually say that speed is not that important because a fight goes to the ground and becomes more grappling. So why bother to work on speed if it's not going to be of any use?

Developing speed will also increase the power that is delivered to your target. This is actually based on a physics formula to discover the amount force delivered from one object to another. So, if your punches become faster, then the amount of damage, you can do also increases.

To increase the speed of your punches, I will cover three of the top pieces of advice I received from my instructors over my thirty plus years of martial arts training. There are many ways to increase speed, but many incorporate power training as well. The training I will outline deals with only speed.

Using multiple punching techniques can over power an opponent by keeping them on the defense to the point of giving up. Imagine getting hit so fast that you cannot block or deliver any counter strikes. This is the basis for the first part speed training.

Begin by selecting three or four punches and chain them together. An example would be a front punch, reverse punch followed by a back fist. You want to start slow so that each punch is delivered properly and flows into the next. Then increase the speed until each "set" of punches can be delivered as fast as possible. Multiple chain sets that are properly delivered can quickly over power an opponent.

Individual punch speed can also be improved with items found around the house. Bruce Lee is credited with a drill which extinguishes a candle with a punch. A stick candle is best, but any candle where the flame is not blocked from the side will work.

You want your fist to about two or three inches from the flame to start. When you punch the wind generated from your punch will blow the candle out. If you have never done this, you may only get the flame to flicker a little. As you progress and become faster you may be able to blow out the candle a few times. Don't become discouraged and keep practicing. Once you are able to extinguish the candle consistently at a two or three-inch range you will want to increase your range by a few inches.

Warning: It is very tempting to lock your elbow with this type of training. Do not lock your arm out as you can damage the ligaments and tendons in your elbow. If repeated locking occurs over a period of time it can lead to damage of the Ulnar or Radial Nerve. Damage of these nerves can lead to weakness in the hand and/or loss of finger coordination.

The third type of speed training also works on your targeting ability. Speed and power count for nothing if you can't hit your target. The only item you need for this training is a small light weight ball such as tennis ball or racquet ball.

There are two ways to perform this drill. First, you can bounce the ball and then punch the ball as it comes into range. If you strike early the ball will hit the floor almost immediately. If you strike late the ball will take off in an upward arch. If the ball goes right or left, then you are either hooking your punch or your fist is turned, which indicates an improper technique. The object is to hit before the ball so that it flies straight. Speed and proper technique are the only way to accomplish this objective.

The second way to perform this drill is slightly more complex and takes a second person. Have your partner stand behind you and toss the ball over your shoulder. It will take some time to get everything correct so that you can strike every time. You can also use these improper tosses to adjust yourself into the correct range.

By using these speed training drills you can correct technique problems, increase the amount of force delivered, and improve your targeting ability. Use one of these techniques for a short period of time then use another to gain the best result.

Sport karate classes focus on tournament training, traditional karate classes tend to focus on what people refer to as the three k's, Kumite (sparring), Kata (forms) and Kihon (basics).

Then within the sport and traditional karate dojo (training hall), there are no two the same.

Sensei (teacher) focus on different areas, some sport dojo, focus only on kumite, others focus only on kata, then there are the dojo who practice both. The same applies with the traditional dojo.

Then we come to the training itself, some dojo train extremely hard, some hardly do anything! Some work on power, some on speed, there are dojo who make heavy contact during kumite practice and others who never touch!

You have the schools that performs a twenty plus minute warm up and stretch, then you have the schools that have a twenty second warm up and stretch!

There are the instructors who focus on 'how to kill', then there are those who focus on the philosophy of the ancient masters.

There are disciplined karate dojo, where the training is very militaristic, then there are those where they have cigarette breaks!

We could go on and on, the karate class is developed around the individuals who run them, so the way to find the right karate class for you, is to go online and look at different karate resources, find a way you like the look of, then go and find karate classes in your area that match your results, they are out there!

Good luck and I hope you find the right karate class for you.

The average man must learn how to defend himself against the roaming roughnecks. And Karate is the answer! You don't have to lift weights to practice Karate. No rigorous exercises at the gym are needed. Size and weight are not the primary factors in overcoming your attacker.

In Karate you need fear no man! Even a 200 lb. brute can be overpowered ... If YOU know how to use his own weight and size against him! Let us now demonstrate the proper basic karate defense against street attacks:

1. You are walking down a dark street. A man creeps up behind you. He grabs your right hand, pulls and twists it from behind in an attempt to get a strangle-hold on you. HOW TO DEFEND: Swing the foot opposite the hand being held and attack his face with smashing blows.

2. You're standing still on a street corner. A wise guy walks close behind you. Perhaps you had a few disagreeing words with him last week. Now he wants to get "even" with you. He suddenly pulls your right hand back and with the same motion pushes your shoulder forward. HOW TO DEFEND: Don't hesitate a moment. Give him the mule kick from the rear-and right to his solar plexus. He will loosen his grip and then you really go to work on him.

3. Two men sneak up behind you. Each grabs a hand, pulls it back and pushes your shoulders forward. HOW TO DEFEND: Attack one opponent with a rear mule kick. Attack second opponent with elbow blow to ribs. Free your self and run for safety.

4. A man goes berserk and tries to attack you with a knife. He attempts to strike you from an overhead position. HOW TO DEFEND: As he plunges down, you leap off at a 45° angle, land on your left foot and kick with your right foot at the maniac's knee. This will throw him off stride. Follow through with any of your Karate weapons.

5. A maniac tries to knife you in the stomach. HOW TO DEFEND: Fall forward to the floor diagonally and throw a roundhouse kick to the nut's groin with your right foot. This will make him double up with pain. With the same leg you thrust at the man's knee joint, throw him to the ground and disarm him.

6. A punk, reeking of liquor, tries to whack you with a back hand blow from across his body. HOW TO DEFEND: Basic karate should save you in this situation. Step in with your right foot and slash at his forearm with your right hand. Disarm him and strike at any nerve center.

7. A seedy looking, beady-eyed tramp tries to hold you up with a knife. He surprises you and holds the weapon against your stomach. HOW TO DEFEND: Make a motion with your right hand to distract his attention; then slash down with the left. If possible grab the tramp's wrist. Turn your body away from the knife and smash him in the Adam's apple.

8. A wild teenager tries to club you on the top of the head. HOW TO DEFEND: Move quickly with your left hand and push against the elbow joint of the attacking arm; then move in fast and counter attack with the elbow with smashes to the face and kicks to the groin.

9. An opponent tries to club you with a roundhouse swing. HOW TO DEFEND: Block the blow with a knife hand defense against his forearm and with your right hand deliver a stinging, smashing knife blow to your opponent's neck.

10. A man attempts to attack you with a backhanded swing of a club. HOW TO DEFEND: Lean to the side to dodge the attack and then counter with a sweeping roundhouse kick to the solar plexus or groin.

After all, most classes consist of perfecting kicks and sparring drills, not weapons training. This is not to say every school is this way, but many do not stress this important part of martial development enough. Incorporating taekwondo weapons can expand one's martial arts strategy, improve hand and tendon strength, and allow us to better use our environment to an advantage.

Taekwondo weapons by definition really don't exist. Research seems to indicate that taekwondo in most schools is strictly unarmed, and if any weapons are taught it is not an official part of the system and is added by the instructor or other students. It is wise to always look to the masters of old and the training methods they employed as an example. All warriors past and present trained with weapons and so should you. Taekwondo weapons are, in essence, a reflection of each individual martial artist. Therefore, one should be encouraged to explore many different taekwondo weapons, even ones that "aren't in your style."

Weapons training can help expand ones martial strategy. How? By training with taekwondo weapons of different lengths and capabilities the ability to judge distance is enhanced. For example, the staff has the advantage of length and long distance, but the sai must be in close in order to be effective. This can translate into open hand fighting by teaching proper combat distance, which is essential to win. It also teaches how to use the body as a weapon, and the object one uses as an extension. This training correlates over to open hand fighting and soon the student realizes that he/she's own body is a weapon and the same principles can be used for self-protection.

Another added benefit of training with taekwondo weapons is hand and tendon strengthening. Some martial art weapons are more beneficial in this aspect than others, such as heavier ones like sais or tonfa. The weight of the weapon forces the hands and forearms to adapt to the training. In turn, one learns to better relax since it takes more effort to wield. Naturally, the body does most of the work, which increases hitting power with minimal effort. This is an essential step in martial development.

Adding taekwondo weapons training into your routine can open up the environment and the objects within it to be used as weapons. Almost any every day item, such as screwdrivers, silverware, jewelry, pens, chemicals, etc can be used as an object of destruction. This does not mean one is constantly looking for ways to hurt people, but simply being prepared for the worst, should it occur. It is important to remember that our martial ancestors always carried a weapon, be it hair pins or a farming tool. The notion that martial arts are weaponless in nature is incorrect thinking. Training with taekwondo weapons over time will increase perception of the world around us and allow one to better protect himself from danger.

Taekwondo weapons offer many benefits such as strategy training, hand and tendon strengthening, and tactical perception of the world around us. Regardless of whether the school a person trains at even uses weapons, it is important to fit this old and dying art into one's MA schedule. If we let others decide how much we can learn, our full potential can never be reached.

These competitions are held on local, national and international levels as well as the Olympics. Tae Kwon Do competitions feature 3 main areas to compete; forms, sparring and weapons, as well as demonstrations that often include board breaking. There are standard weapons used in most schools, but students are encourage to explore the use of other traditional Korean weapons and develop there own forms and demonstrations with them.

These traditional weapons commonly taught in Tae Kwon Do classes inlcude Ssahng Jeol Bong (nunchaku), Bahng Mahng Ee (short stick), Gum Do (Japanese style sword), Sahn Knat (Kama) and the Jahng Bong (Bo staff).

The Bahng Mang Ee which is like a short baseball bat or stick is the most basic, but still extremely effective. The one common trait among the use of these weapons is the principal of the nine lines of strike. The nine lines of strike define the moves for attacking an opponent. Basically there are two diagonal downward strikes from left to right and right to left followed by two upward strikes in the reverse direction. Then there are two horizontal strikes one in each direction, followed by one straight down at the opponents head, one upwards to the groin and the final nine strike is a straight blow delivered to the face or center of the body. Bahng Mahng Ee training will also include a lot of self defense against attacks with this weapon as it is similar to something you may be attacked with on an everyday basis.

The nunchaku of course made famous by Bruce Lee movies can look very difficult and at the very beginning a little difficult to get the hang of. However with a little practice, even children at six years old can develop the skill to use even two of these simultaneously. It's looks great in demonstration, but whether this is a practical weapon that can be used in real situations is probably still questionable to most.

The Bo staff or Jahng Bong as it is known in Tae Kwon Do and the Kama are both great weapons, but the pride of the arsenal is the Gum Do. You are taught to respect and revere your sword like something out of a Japanese Samurai movie.

Anyone aspiring in sports wants to achieve a lot in his/her sporting career. They will do as much as possible in order to fulfill their aim of gaining the best. For this purpose, various areas need to be taken care of, especially your diet. Your career in sports may come to an end if you become ill or malnourished. One of the ways to take care of the sportsperson's diet is to use sports supplements.

Know about Sports Supplements

First, decide why you want to take sports supplements. The goals you for yourself should be clear in mind when choosing sports supplements. In order to obtain a safe product, research well what you desire to take before purchasing it. These products will be efficient in realizing your goals if used properly.

All athletes and bodybuilders generally want to enhance muscle mass and weight. This need not be done by consuming unhealthy calories, carbohydrates and sugar. Sports supplements aid in this process and increase the advantages of having a balanced diet and work out. If you are trying to gain weight in a healthy manner then try these bodybuilding supplements.

Always keep in mind that these supplements only aid you in reaching the maximum of your physical activities. If a supplement claims to do the work for you, chances are that it might be unsafe for you (like steroids). Sports supplements are available in a wide variety of products and execute various functions.

Also, results vary for different body types. Choose that body supplement which best helps you in accomplishing your goal. How will you know this? It will depend on the research you undertake before deciding which supplements are right for you.

These supplements come in the form of vitamins, fatty acids, amino acids, minerals and even herbs and are often referred to as nutritional or dietary supplement. They can be used before or after a workout depending on the requirement. Various reliable online dealers sell high quality bodybuilding supplements.

If you perform a dedicated search online then you will save on your precious time and money as well as relieve the stress of shopping from store to store. Try to talk to people who are already consuming supplements in order to get a better idea of their results. If these supplements are taken in combination with a balanced diet then they will be quite beneficial for you.

If you really want to gain weight and stay healthy then choose a sport supplement best suited to your needs. With these considerations, along with your supplements, work out and stay fit.

If you are a sportsperson then it is sure that your aim would be to attain greater heights of success and become a renowned sport personality. To achieve these aims you need to remain fit and healthy so that you may outperform others. For this you will require supplements in combination with a healthy diet. But before choosing sports supplements make sure you know everything about it like- its effects and side effects, daily requirements and more. But many boxers in high school will use worn-out equipment a lot of the time. You will see a box of second hand gloves and old pads in the place where they practice this sport.

In the following lines we will talk about the equipment you need to start off your boxing training. We will tell you about the essential and non-essential devices you need to purchase.

Boxing equipment is inexpensive when you compare it with other sports. The initial outlay is minimal: gloves, punching bags and the boxing ring. It also has a low-cost upkeep. All boxers need a mouth piece, they are very affordable as well. This equipment is essential in any boxing training to help protect the teeth and gums.

You will also need a quality ring, the padding must be extended over the edge. A groin protector is very important as well. Many stray punches can go to your groin and if you do not use protection you will have problems. There are also many quality brands to choose from like Kalleva, Supreme Pro, Full force and others just to name a few.

If you want to be a quality boxer a jump rope is essential. You need to work out daily so this equipment will be what you need to start of with. You will stay light on your feet using a jump rope. You will also boost your fitness and stamina. The weight loss benefits that come from using this rope are huge as well. There are also many wholesale boxing equipment suppliers in the market today. You can use the Internet to find some good ones but we advise you to read some reviews about them or get recommendations from friends and fellow boxers.

The speed bag, although losing popularity, is very important as well. This device will help you develop hand/eye coordination skills. A floor to ceiling ball will do a similar job as far as coordination is concerned.

Head guards are mandatory for all sparring matches and if you enter amateur competitions, you will be expected to wear the correct head guard which is quality checked and passed by a governing body like AIBA, gloves must also be passed by this governing body.

The essential boxing equipments are: head guards, protective cups and mouthpieces. Your boxing training must include a qualified coach to teach you the correct punching techniques and make sure you are training the right way. Heavy bags are important when you need to develop endurance and punching power. Your knuckles and wrists will be protected because you will use hand wraps. When hitting heavy bags you will use bag gloves, they are very light and easy to use.

Good boxing gloves are essential, we advise you not to buy low-quality gloves because they will wear out quickly.

O.K, so now you have learned the basics about the boxing equipment you need to get your boxing career started right away.
It is often misunderstood as simply fighting, but there are vast health benefits to the aerobic workout you get from boxing. It is important that when you decide to take up the sport of boxing you invest in solid, durable boxing equipment that will protect you and your opponent while you train.

One of the primaries of boxing equipment is, of course, gloves. You can get professional fight gloves for fighting, training gloves and bag gloves all for the different aspects of the sport.

Professional fighting gloves conform to the shape of your fist to attain maximum comfort, support and grip. They are commonly made out of soft, top-grade leather for durability and comfort. Underneath the leather is foam--sometimes three different foams, to promote metacarpal and knuckle safety while still maintaining your punch's full power.

Training gloves are designed for training. While they are similar to professional fighting gloves, training gloves are often easier to get into--meaning you will normally not need a trainer to lace them up so that they are worn properly.

Bag gloves come in a wide variety but are a necessity when training with a punching bag. There are different gloves for heavy bags and speed bags. Speed bag gloves are lighter and do not have as much padding, as they are used primarily for a speed bag and do not require a lot of protection.

Your boxing equipment wouldn't be complete without punch mitts--for the most serious of boxing trainers. These pads are worn by a sparring partner while the opponent hits the moving pads wearing boxing gloves. You can also invest in body protectors and body shields.

Headgear is also an equally important facet of boxing equipment. You can choose open face or full-face protectors in a variety of materials and colors. Traditional style headgear provides padding on all four sides for durability and shock absorbency. They provide additional ear protection with new, technologically advanced air-release ear channels to relieve excessive air pressure.

Mouth guards are another important aspect of equipment for boxing. These important pieces absorb shock and are quite comfortable on contact points in the mouth. They protect the teeth and tongue during a fight. while higher end mouthguards also protect shock to the brain resulting from jarring of the jaw.

Protective cups are also essential for male boxers. These padded groin and abdomen protectors do just that--protect the sensitive groin and abdomen areas. Different styles are available for you to choose from for your comfort and safety.

We've moved all the way down to your feet now in boxing equipment--shoes and socks. There are specially made socks to be worn with boxing shoes. Boxing shoes come in both high and low top styles and are specially made for impact and shock absorption. They provide for flexibility of fast-footed boxers while maintaining comfort and maximum safety. The soles are made to be anti-slip and provide good grip on the mats and in the ring.
Boxing equipment wouldn't be complete without clothing. Clothing for boxing varies widely and will depend on your comfort style. Shorts are most often worn for training and fighting in the ring. They come from cotton to silk for fights and in any color you can imagine. You can also invest in specially made uniform or dress boxing clothing for the prizefight. Robes and t-shirts are also readily available for training and fighting.

What would boxing be without training bags? Heavy, double-end and speed bags are quintessential to any boxing career.

Heavy bags are just that--heavy. They are strung from chains and are hung from a heavy bag stand or a ceiling beam. They swing easily and are durable enough to take years of punches.

Double end bags are made out of leather and are equipped with a rubber cord at each end for rebounding and quick action. These bags are a must for all boxing workouts and come in six, seven and classic nine inch diameters.

Speed bags are designed for speed, so they are small and lightweight. They are made from leather or vinyl, depending on the make and model of speed bag you wish to purchase. They hang from a speed bag stand with floor and ceiling attachments and recoil great under each punch.

This is a brief overview of the boxing equipment you will need to get into the sport of boxing. As with all sports, there is always plenty of extra equipment that can enhance the sport and the experience. Check with your boxing trainer for all the equipment you need for your boxing--as a career or casual sport.
A recent medical study has shown that over 85% of the world populations are known to fall under the obese category. The remaining 15% that are known to be of healthy weight are also at a high risk of becoming over weight due to the life style that we have in the current modern era.

As a result, there has been a lot of emphasis put on how a person can under go a weight loss program effectively. One of the main reasons as to why people in the current day and age are suffering from weight issues is solely down to the life style that they live. With modern advancements, many people have become more reliable on technology. Seeing as this is the case, more people are using lower amounts of human energy.

To give you a few examples of how people have become use to modern advancements, one can simply look at the transport system. In previous years, people were known to walk to places or at least cycle when they knew they were traveling a long distance. In both walking and cycling, one would be burning a large number of calories in the process ensuring that their body remained fit.

However in the modern day and age, the concept of walking and cycling to places has completely gone out of fashion. Nowadays, people are known to sit on motor vehicles in the form of buses and cars in order to get to their destination. On average, one person is known to spend over three years of their entire life in a motor vehicle. This just gives you a small idea of how reliable we have become on modern advancements.

Using a motor vehicle to travel to all places means that your body is not burning enough calories in the day. Over time, these unburned calories are known to equate to body fat. It is for this very reason that many health experts have been trying to get people to change their life style for the better. One of the main changes that many health experts have been trying to achieve is implementing various recreational and sporting activities in one's life.

Simply adopting such a small change in your life style can make a huge difference in you losing weight. There are many recreational and sporting activities to choose from that have been known to contribute a significant amount to one losing weight. One of the most important things that you need to remember in regards to choosing a recreational or sporting activity is to choose something that you enjoy.

In terms of losing weight, the best option would be to join the gym. The only problem with going to a gym is that a person will most likely look at it as a chore rather than an activity; therefore the results won't be as prominent as they should be.

Choosing a recreational or sporting activity is the key; something that gets your heart rate up more than normal.

John Skelly is the owner of Quality-Chess.net, a site where you can find a large variety of top quality chess products including folding wood chess sets or glass and marble chess sets.
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of traditional martial arts, wrestling and boxing, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete. The MMA fighters compete using techniques from these distinct forms of fighting inside of an eight sided cage. A win is when the other opponent is knocked out, submits, or succeeds by the decision of the judges.

As a result of the different techniques used in MMA, fighters must be highly trained and in top physical condition. Practitioners that prepare to fight in matches have to work on their speed, strength, agility, and endurance. Becoming a professional MMA fighter takes time and patience. Most MMA fighters have to start out from the basics - martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Jiu-Jitsu. Wrestling and boxing are also valuable skills to have. If you don't have these skills, it is essential that you join a mixed martial arts gym, school or club to be trained properly.

After you acquire the basic skills, the next steps are practice and physical conditioning. It is essential for a MMA fighter to develop strength, endurance and balance. Here are some important tips to achieve your MMA dreams!

Tip 1 - Follow a Program. The worst thing you can do is go to the gym and spin your wheels. There is no point in wandering aimlessly around in circles. If you're serious about being an MMA fighter, then you must have a serious strength and conditioning program. You must always be thinking about what you need to do to improve those aspects of your training that need work and to practice and perfect those skills in which you excel.

Tip 2 - Maximize your Efficiency. If you want to succeed as a mixed-martial artist, at a minimum, you've got to train in jiu-jitsu, boxing, kickboxing and wrestling. This doesn't leave you a ton of time to work on strength. So you've got to get in an efficient workout in the little time that you do have. In your strength program, you can do so by training full body workouts focused on movement patterns. Instead of generally working on your chest, biceps, quads, hams and back, think squats, lunges, deadlifts, pushes, pulls, and twists.

TIp 3 - Use a Medicine Ball. By far the best tool for developing MMA specific power is the medicine ball, since you can throw the ball as hard and fast as you can in rotational movements that heavily involve the core. Integrating the medicine ball will allow you to develop knockout power with your strikes, as well as explosive take down ability.

Tip 4 - Get the Right Gear. You can't fight or train without the proper equipment. Experienced competitors involved in fighting sports such as MMA, wrestling, jiu jitsu, and boxing know how important it is to wear the right protective gear and clothing. Safety and performance are of the utmost importance when choosing the proper equipment.
Initially, the apparel range was available only for men. But, with more and more women literally jumping into the ring, top brands such as Fight Chix, TapouT, Bad Boy, Silver Star, ShotGun Cage, etc., have come up with attractive, stylized and comfortable MMA clothing for women also. MMA gear consists predominantly of the MMA shorts, MMA gloves, MMA T-shirts, sweatshirts and hats.

Men's MMA gear is mainly composed of Ninja suits, hooded sweatshirts, fighter MMA shorts and T-shirts, MMA gloves and hats. Rash guards are also available that are better than T-shirts in terms of comfort during performance. However, the color and pattern choices of MMA clothing for men are limited mostly relying on basic blacks and other solid colors. The patterns are also quite sober being generally plain with a logo across the centre. When it comes to men's MMA clothing, greater stress is laid on comfort and performance rather than on style.

On the other hand, the women's range of MMA gear consists of not only apparel but even accessories such as purses that clearly show the amount of stress laid on style in addition to comfort and performance. Their apparel range consists of Gi, rash guards, MMA shorts, MMA gloves and hats. As compared to the men's MMA clothing, women's apparel comes in many vibrant colors such as pinks and blues in addition to the basic black and white. Prints are also exotic and include some unique ones such as leopard and zebra prints!

However, the difference between MMA gear for men and women becomes very obvious when it comes to the MMA gloves. The weight of the MMA gloves for women is usually around 10 to 12 ounces while it is higher for men. Higher weighted gloves for men are designed keeping in mind their stamina to carry off heavier gloves. The glove is designed ergonomically separately for the genders based on the bone structure of their hands.

On the whole, since women are relatively new to this sport as compared to men, women's MMA gear is yet to spread its wings fully. As compared to the men's range, variety for women is still less and not very readily available. However, this scenario should change as the number of women moving into the ring from the ringside is increasing day-by-day!

As compared to men's MMA gear, although the women's range is still limited it is more stylized and vibrant.

Albert couture is an expert in MMA clothing and MMA gear. He is known to have helped many MMA professionals to choose the right gear to suit their needs, style.
Legend has it that the emperor felt that Buddhist priests were too weak so they were ordered to develop exercises in strength training. These exercises soon became known as karate. The uniforms being worn for training are colored white to signify a state of mind that is pure. The wearing of this uniform is an art form all by itself. The following deals with the proper way of wearing the uniform.

The fit of the uniform depends on the type of martial art that you will be training for. Take the case in point of Judo; the uniform should be worn tighter to facilitate grappling and techniques in throwing. If it fits loosely, the top would just slip off during a grapple hold. Buy the appropriate size. The uniforms for Karate don't have the same size designations as our regular clothes. Thus, the only way for you to know the right size for you is to fit it.

Drawstrings usually hold up the Karate pants traditionally. But some designers have already added Velcro fasteners. Make sure you try kicking with the pants on just to make sure it is loose enough and will not restrict such movement.

The Karate uniform's top is worn like a bathrobe, one flap over the other, with the belt holding it in place. Like the pants, it should be loose enough to allow a variety of movements unrestricted. You can use an undershirt so that it can absorb your sweat. To wear the belt, hold an end, approximately 12 inches from the tip, to the waistline just below the belly button. Then bind the belt around the waist once then twice making sure they fix the other end. Then tie a knot with both ends. Pull it tightly then let the free ends drop down neatly.

The belt's color usually signifies the degree of the practitioner. White is the first degree, then black for the highest degree. Never let your Karate uniform get soaked in sweat for a long time. Pre-soak the jacket and the pants for 15 to 20 minutes before washing. Put some towels and other soft articles with it in the washing machine so that the friction would be reduced. That should also reduce the stress on the stitching. After the cycle of washing is done take the uniform out and hang outside to dry.
The key things to keep in mind when trying to purchase the perfect fitting uniform for your martial arts training are; comfort, range of motion and presentation.

Your uniform needs to be comfortable enough to train in for hours and must provide enough room for the full range of motions required of your chosen martial arts style. This normally means the fit of your uniform should be loose and easy to move in, being able to full stretch with your legs and arms. At the same time you do not want your uniform to be too baggy as this may offer an advantage to any opponents during training and sparring as it while give them something easier for them to grab onto. Sizing is also important due to the amount of movement you will be doing. The last thing you want is for your uniform to come open or your pants fall down in the middle of class.

Choosing an elasticated waist band for the pants as opposed to traditional drawstrings can be a help. Some styles of martial arts will also allow for a shirt that can be pulled over your head as opposed to the traditional jackets that can be notorious for coming open.

Uniforms that are to be used for competition are usually made out of higher quality fabric. This is often a canvas like cotton that holds it's creases better to look professional and has more of a snapping sound when movements are completed. However the competition uniforms are normally heavier and thicker, so most martial artists do not use them during regular day-to-day training.

But, prior to competition time you do need to get in practice in your competition uniform so that you are used to the feel and fit, otherwise you may feel weighed down, overheated and restricted in your range of motion when it counts most.
They are a traditional garment that has been worn by karate students and teachers for generations. They are available in varying weights and styles, but almost always consist of three main components; the jacket (Kimono), the pants (Zubon) and of course, the belt (Obi).

Wearing a Gi is highly recommended when practicing karate. Unlike most other clothing, a Gi is designed to withstand a substantial amount of abuse. They are often made from a heavy cotton canvas material, although the weight of material can vary. This material is exceptionally strong, enabling it to survive through years of being pulled on, scraped, beaten, sweated through, and of course, washed. It is also an exceptionally flexible material, which is essential to allowing a student to comfortably perform the necessary motions.

Karate uniforms also come in two basic styles, normal and tournament cut. A typical Gi will have sleeves and pants that reach all the way to the wrist and ankle, respectively. Tournament cut uniforms, by comparison, are a bit narrower and are cut short of the ankle and wrist. This allows the student to move freely without having to worry about accidentally snagging a finger or tripping over the longer hanging pants of a normal Gi.

The karate Gi is based on the traditional uniform of Judo. It is believed that it was adopted by karate practitioners after Master Funakoshi wore one while performing a demonstration, at the behest of Judo master Kano. Previous to that most karate was simply performed in shorts. However, Master Funakoshi was so impressed with the uniform that he brought it back to Okinawa with him and these karate uniforms have been used ever since. Today, they are the most easily recognizable martial arts uniforms on the planet.

Finally, a student should do his/her best to ensure that their Gi is kept in as pristine condition as possible. Tradition dictates that a uniform be clean each and every time a student sets foot in a dojo as a sign of respect.
Chain wrestling is known as putting together a chain of wrestling moves in order to achieve your goal and is best when the moves flow from one move to the next with no real stopping between them.

Chain wrestling is important for wrestling because more often than not, it will take more than one attempt to take your opponent down or escape from him. In high levels of wrestling you will find that they have to use chain wrestling to win. This is because at high levels of wrestling, wrestlers are quite skilled at not only offense, but defensive skills also.

Chain wrestling is often used with takedowns and escapes. A takedown is when a wrestler takes his opponent from off of his feet to the ground. He has to make sure that he is behind him and in control for the takedown to be counted. An escape is when a bottom wrestler uses a move to get out from underneath the top wrestler.

So when a coach tells his wrestler to chain wrestle when he is trying to take down his opponent, he is basically telling his wrestler to put together a string of takedown attempts. For example, if a wrestler is trying to take down his opponent then he might try to snap down his opponent, right into a high crotch double leg attack and then finishing it up with a single leg attack to take his opponent down. When done correctly, these moves will flow together and will allow him to move efficiently through the moves.

When you are in the bottom position, the top man is going to be constantly trying to break you down. Chances are that when this happens, one move is not going to be enough to completely escape. A much more effective way to escape, for example, would be to put three to four sit out moves in combination with a stand up move. It is hard to hold someone down that is constantly moving.

In order to chain wrestle well you will need to make sure to drill the moves individually. You will want to get to a point where you won't have to think about them. You just do them. It will also help to have good conditioning because you will be constantly moving and attacking.
I didn't know about the importance of proper nutrition and proper hydration. I had no idea about the number of calories in certain foods. I didn't know a deep fried fish square on a bun had more calories than a hamburger because I thought that fish was healthy. I had no clue about the different roles that the various nutrients played in one's body.

Wrestling is a sport that involves competitors being in different weight classes. Therefore, some wrestlers find it beneficial to diet thinking they will have a competitive advantage in a lower weight class. This is not always the case but this notion seems to persist. Regardless of whether or not a wrestler decides to cut weight or not he should still practice proper nutrition to ensure that he performs at top level.

A few simple things to keep in mind:

    * One pound is equal to approximately 3,500 calories
    * If you consume 500 fewer calories per day then you will lose one pound per week (500 calories per day x 7 days = 3,500 calories per week equating to one pound)
    * One gram of carbohydrate has four calories
    * One gram of protein has four calories
    * One gram of fat has nine calories
    * Your body's preferred source of fuel is carbohydrates like bread, cereals, rice, potatoes, and pasta
    * Adequate fiber can help you feel full when dieting
    * Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

A simple formula regarding weight loss, weight gain, and weight maintenance:

    * Take your body weight times 10 to find the number of calories to eat per day to lose weight (e.g. a wrestler weighing 150 lbs. would need to consume 1,500 calories per day to lose weight)
    * Take your body weight times 15 to find the number of calories to maintain your weight (e.g. if a wrestler cuts down to 120 lbs. he could then eat approximately 1,800 calories per day and still maintain that weight)
    * If you want to gain weight then take your body weight times 20 to find the number of calories needed each day to gain weight

As you can see, fat contains more than twice the number of calories per gram than carbohydrate or protein. So, if you want to lose weight then cutting down on fats will help. Fat is not all bad. Fat helps in the production of hormones like testosterone and does many other good things in the body so do not eliminate it entirely.

When I wrestled in high school, I ate a lot of fruit, potatoes, plain unsweetened oatmeal, plain unbuttered bread and toast, vegetables, milk, yogurt, and lean meat.

Your body's muscles need adequate glycogen for energy. Your brain's primary source of fuel is glucose. In other words, you need to consume adequate carbohydrates to have energy and to be mentally focused.

When I was cutting weight in high school I would become very weak and had trouble concentrating. I now know this is because I had no glycogen and no glucose, which my body was in vital need of.

Keep in mind that your pre competition meal should be light and carbohydrate based as well.

Low calorie diets can lead to muscle loss. You cannot be as strong and powerful if you are losing muscle mass. Some researchers also believe that very low calorie diets can cause one's metabolism to drop because the body senses a famine situation and goes into starvation mode. Therefore, if you choose to lose weight to be more competitive do not go on a drastic low calorie diet.

Whether you diet or not, be sure to get these six key nutrients:

    * Carbohydrates
    * Fat
    * Protein
    * Vitamins
    * Minerals
    * Water

If you eat a wide variety of food, you should be able to meet your nutritional requirements. Educate yourself about proper nutrition. Read books and articles. Consider buying a food scale and a calorie-counting book if you decide to lose weight.

Do not neglect the importance of nutrition in addition to proper technique and good conditioning in your quest to be a successful wrestler.
You can tell when many wrestlers start off in MMA because of some tell tale signs that they do. If they aren't careful they will lose or get hurt because of the mistakes they make.

The mistakes that they are making in MMA would be the correct thing to do in wrestling, however, it is not wrestling. There are different rules and attacks that they have to worry about.

Taking down opponents in wrestling and MMA is a critical skill to learn. However, there are some slight modifications that you have to make when you are in MMA. The biggest modification that you have to make is to protect your neck. When most wrestlers shot in for a leg attack they will leave their neck wide open to attack. This is the main reason that new wrestlers in MMA will get submitted.

They will shoot in on their opponent and leave their neck unprotected. The other fighter will see this and will quickly slap in a guillotine choke on them. From there, there is almost nothing that they can do to get out of it, if it is placed correctly. The way to prevent this is to protect your neck when you shoot in. When shooting in, make sure to keep your neck tucked into your body and keep it close to your opponent's body. This will make it much harder for him to try to get the choke.

The next mistake they make is again with their shooting. When they are on their feet many new guys will bull rush in to try to take down their opponents. They will leave their head down and will just rush into his opponent. He will not set up his shot and will telegraph it from a mile away.

The danger comes in from his opponent being able to react to his take down attempt. With the wrestler coming in with his head down it is all to easy for his opponent to catch him in the face with a hard upper cut and that is not the worst thing that could happen. If his opponent is fast enough then it is entirely possible for him to knee him right in the fact when he is coming in.

Getting kneed in the face is not a pleasant thing. The way around this is to keep your head up (and tucked in) when you shoot in. Make sure to set up your shot and not to telegraph it.

Mind you, this isn't a scientific analysis, just an observation based on watching a few UFC fights on the tube. The results of this unscientific survey, however, indicate that perhaps a deeper study should be considered.

To be specific, out of the last three UFC fights I viewed on television mixed martial artists with the most tattoos lost their fights, 67% to 33%.

Two thirds to one third, that means the untattooed fighters are winning twice as often as their decorated opponents.

There are a couple of factors that one should consider in this analysis, and these factors could skew the results, and perhaps severely.

One factor was deciding, when two fighters with tattoos were fighting a match, which fellow had the most flesh inked. Usually, but not always, this seemed fairly straightforward.

Another factor that seemed to count, be it loosely, was the type of tattoo a martial artist was adorned with. This factor is very hard to pin down, as the fighters are constantly shifting about and the camera doesn't always pick out and define the tattoos. The single thing that seemed to prevail, however, was that people with religious tattoos seemed to lose more than people with 'straight forward' tattoos.

Now, here comes the speculation as to why this is happening.

One thought that immediately came to mind was the fact that members of the famous Yakuza gangster groups, when they do reach old age, tend to die of organ failure--I believe it was liver. One doctor surmised, with graph and thick reports, that the ink on the body stopped proper oxygen ingestion. This would indicate that the liver depends on oxygen taken in through the skin more than other organs. This was presented as a straight forward scientific study, but I have a lot of questions about this, and would like to get a copy of the document. And then perhaps even be able to read and understand the 'medicalese' involved in the study.

The other factor that might figure in in this notion that tattooed MMA fighters lose more than non-tattooed fighters, has to do with a person being 'symboled.'

When somebody gets a tattoo, the usual reason is that it 'looks so good.' This would indicate that a person is more concerned with appearances than any actual function; would indicate that learning to fight is secondary to how he looks. This is an intriguing point, and one which I would put more credence in than the previously mentioned medical study.

At any rate, I will be glued to the television, come the next UFC extravaganza, searching for factors that explain this phenomenon. Who wears what kind of ink? How much ink is involved? What percentage of the flesh is needle painted? Can punching power be linked to the size of the ink stain? Is endurance at risk when a fighter has more artwork on his skin? Obviously, a sizable door has just swung open.

Many people today even get sport tattoos to show their interest in this concept. Proud supporters of a specific sport get tattoos that stand for their beliefs and values. Much like the way people who are fond of animals get tattoos of tigers, sport fanatics have their own version of tattoos to get. If you feel the need to express yourself this way, there are many options for designs that you can consider. To give you an overview of what you can get for a tattoo, take a look at the three categories below:

The Sport

Since there are many sports in the world, you can consider getting sport tattoos that are based on the sport that you are most fond of. For example, if you are an avid fan of soccer, you can choose to use the image of the ball for your tattoo. Images depicting a game of football can also be used as a design for the tattoo. Absolutely anything that has to do with the sport you love; be it fencing or swimming, the objects in it can be used to symbolize your enthusiasm related to sports. You can get a tattoo of a jaguar signifying your passion for car racing, or you can get a tennis racket to show your eagerness in this sport. There are truly no limits when it comes to this kind of tattoos.

The Team

Teams in some sports have specific colors and images that represent them in competitions or leagues. For instance, basketball teams in the NBA have distinct logos or seals that identify them from the rest. If you are in favor of a specific team and you want to promote it, you can get sport tattoos related to the team. In international competitions, the emblem of the teams usually has some semblance with the flag of the countries where the teams come from. You can use this concept to come up with a design that holistically represents both the country and the team that you are supporting.

The Virtues

Sports vary in the virtues that they uphold. Although team spirit and teamwork is common among multiple-player games, other sports promote more than these values. In billiards, for instance, precision and technique are important to be successful in the game. This may also be true in bowling, but in badminton, you should also have agility and speed. Since the way these sports are played vary from one another, the persons who are fond of these may also vary in the virtues that they hold above others. If you know which of these values can be equally related to the sports you love, you can use it in a tattoo so as not to limit yourself with plain images on designs. The use of text or words in tattoos is a good option because it gives a more direct meaning to the designs.
