Como nosso cerébro aprende um novo idioma?

Você sabia que aprender uma segunda língua altera a massa cinzenta do cérebro, área onde se encontra os neurônios responsáveis por processar as informações? Pois bem , isto acontece porque nosso cérebro é como um músculo que quando mais treinamento recebe mais se fortifica, mais musculatura se forma. Entrando um pouco mais a fundo no assunto, vale a pena citar o que a neurociência denomina de plasticidade cerebral ou simplesmente neuroplasticidade que é a capacidade que nosso cérebro possui de forma novas conexões e sinapses diante de novos desafios e descobertas. No caso do aprendizado de idioma, esse processo acontece em duas áreas conhecidas como área de wernick (responsável pela compreensão do que se fala e se ouve). A outra é a Área de broca (responsável pela articulação e produção da fala).
Seguindo a lógica da neuroplasticidade, não temos outra saída a não ser nos expormos o máximo possível ao idioma alvo. Em inglês que é nosso caso, a prática deve ser diária. Não existe milagre. Pelo menos, não ainda. O que existe, são métodos para acelerar esse processo de novas conexões e sinapses neuronais tornando o idioma inglês mais acessível em nossos arquivos da linguagem.

Comose diz "Ao pé da letra" em Inglês?

Uma caracteristicas de estudantes inciantes em Inglês é ler e interpretar tudo o que vê em inglês ao pé da letra. Mas não demora e o estudante é informado pelo professor que não é assim que as coisas funcionam no idioma inglês. E a medida que estudamos o idioma percebemos que muitas palavras ou frases inteiras devem ser interpretadas. Isto explica porque muitas vezes a tradução que vemos em filmes parecem não ter sentido. Principalmente quando tentamos acompanhar a legenda em inglês e português ao mesmo tempo. Ao longo do nosso aprendizado, aprendemos um aspecto muito interessante não somente no idioma inglês, como também em qualquer idioma no mundo. Este aspecto chama-se "Idioms" ou numa tradução em português "expresões idiomaticas" que não são nada mais do que uma forma propria que certo país tem de falar certas palavras ou expressões que nem sempre tem realmente como traduzir, a não ser seu sentido equivalente em outro país. A expressão : "no pain, no gain" por exemplo jamais faria sentido se interpretado ao pé da letra (nehuma dor , sem ganho). A interpretação e sentido equivalente em português seria: "quem não arrisca, não petisca". Essa e muitas outras expressoes idimatica e seus equivalentes em português você pode encontrar nos seguintes sites só lingua inglesa e sk idioms.

Mas você deve está achando que perdí o foco e esquecí de responder à pergunta do título. Mas fique tranquilo. Fiz esta introdução porque achei muito relevante destacar em que momento o idioma inglês é interpretado "ao pé da letra". |Mas chega de enrolação e vamos ao que interessa e responder de uma vez por todas como se diz "ao pé da letra" inglês.

Quero aproveitar a noticia que acabei de receber do jornal new york time em meu e-mail sobre o estado de saúde da secretária de estado Hillary clinton Ou originalmente Hillary rodham clinton . A notícia aparece da seguinte forma:

A palavra que queremos encontrar e discutir hoje está em negrito : Blood clot

Na verdade, o post de hoje não tem muito o que discutir. Mas para que você não se esqueça deste vocabulário é importante criar textos próprios com uso desta palavra. Quando você coloca em prática o que acabou de aprender, ajuda seu cérebro colocar essa informação como destaque na memória, e assim terá grande possibilidade de se lembrar da palavra quando precisar usa-la.

Se tiver dificuldade para criar textos com o uso desta palavra ou de qualquer outra, basta acessar o site Linguee e digitar a palavra no buscador do site e logo após se abrirá uma janela com varios textos com uso da palavra em questão. Esse site é importante porque permite que você encontre as palavras dentro de um contexto. Na verdade, é um dicionário que se diferencia dos outros por dar o significado da palavra dentro de um contexto.

LEARN ENGLISH COM O PRIMEIRO VÔO DOS BEBÊS PATOS (BABYS'' FIRST FLIGHT) Parte 2

HI folks! Estou aquí com a segunda parte deste divertido e interessante video sobre os primeiros passos dos patos carolinos
Hoje irei compartilhar uma descoberta muito relevante para quem pratica a língua inglesa, que é bastante oportuno no processo de analise deste video. Você já ouviu falar de frases fixas e semi-fixas do idioma inglês?... SE sua resposta for não, você está no lugar certo.
Existem muitas expressões faladas no vídeo que são fixas e outras que são variáveis. Um exemplo de frase fixa seria:
Enjoy yourselves Aproveitem ou divirtam-se

Veja que esta expressão não varia.. Isto significa dizer, que é uma expressão fixa e vai aparecer sempre desta forma. No entanto, existem expressões que são apenas parcialmente fixas. Um exemplo deste tipo de expressão está na expressão inicial do vídeo:

We're inside [a tree] Nós estamos dentro [de uma arvore]

Neste exemplo existe a parte fixa (We're inside....) e de uma outra parte que pode variar (a tree).
Sendo assim, poderiarmos mudar esta frase, substituindo apenas a parte variável. veja os exemplos:

We're inside [the block] Nós estamos dentro [do bloco]
We're inside [the school] Nós estamos dentro [da escola]

Como você pode perceber, apenas as frases entre colchetes é que variam.

É muito importante praticar desta maneira porque não precisamos ficar presos apenas na expressão utilizada no vídeo ou audio. Isto permite criarmos nossos próprios exemplos substituindo apenas a parte variável.

Seguindo com o vídeo temos a frase:

[15] feet above [a lake] [4,57] metros acima de [um lago]

Neste exemplo temos uma pequena diferença dos exemplos anteriores, que é a existência de frases variáveis antes e depois da expressão fixa. À aplicação de mudança é a mesma explicada anteriormente.

Agora segue abaixo o transcript completo do vídeo com algumas possíveis mudanças de expressões varíaveis:

Why would these hatchlings take such a leap? Well, if they stay in the tree, they starve to death. they starve to [tired] Yeah, that sounds like motivation to me. that sounds like [bad to me, you, them]

Mom and her eleven little hatchlings. After a rite of passage like this one, they're ready for absolutely anything.

BABYS' FIRST FLIGHT (O PRIMEIRO VÔO DOS BEBÊS PATOS)

Olá Friends! estou aqui hoje para compartilhar um pequeno e divertido vídeo Como eu já disse em outro post, videos é uma das melhores formas para se aprender inglês. Porque videos atingem todos os aspectos do processo de aprendizagem da língua inglesa, como listen, read, write e speak.

Este vídeo mostra como é os dois primeiros dias de filhotes de patos que vivem em madeiras, em inglês wood duck hatchlings. O nome tecnico é patos carolinos, Natural da América do Norte, em particular das zonas pantanosas da costa este dos Estados Unidos da América, a espécie foi introduzida na Europa como animal ornamental de jardins. Alimenta-se de vegetais e grãos.( fonte : wikipedia).

Vamos explorar parte por parte do transcript deste video.

Na primeira parte ouvimos: We're inside a tree, 15 feet above a lake. High in the Rocky mountains. We're in a nest of wood duck eggs, hatching after a 30-day incubation.

Esta primeira deixei em negrito um importante dado relacionado a pesos e medidas em inglês "15 feet above a lake" . Um foot equivale a 12 inchs (doze polegadas) ou 30, 48 centimetros. Mas para que você tenha uma noção mais clara sobre à altura que os filhotes de patos ( duck hatchlings), é importante fazer a conversão de centimetro para metro. Para isso, primeiro vamos multiplicar 30,48 por 15 que é o numero de feets. Então 30,48 x 15= 457,2. Agora é só fazemos a conversão, usando para facilitar, um convertedor de medidas online http://www.convertworld.com/pt/. Então 457,2 centímetros equivale à 4, 57 metros de altura.

Acho que não ´é preciso dizer que é preciso muita coragem para filhotes que nunca voaram saltar (leap) de tão alto. Esta altura corresponde à 30 pés (30 feets) 9 metros de altura para um humano. Lembrando que existem filhotes que pulam de muito mais alto que isto. Existem o que pulam cerca de 60 pés (60 feets) (18 metros de altura.).

Acho relevante aproveitar o momento para falar sobre outras unidades de medidas ( measures) mais usados no dia a dia.

1 pound (uma libra) equivale a 16 ounces (16 onças) ou 453,59 gramas.

Para fixar vamos à alguns exemplos:

Para falar sobre sua altura ou altura de alguém usa-se em conjunto as unidades foot e inch.

Então quando você ouvir: she's 5 feet and 10 inch significa que ela mede algo como 1 metro e 77 cm de altura. lembrando que estas unidades aparecem geralmente na sua forma abreviada feet= ft e inch= in

Para falar sobre distância usa-se "mile" (milha). 1 mile conforme a tabela é aproximadamente 1km e 600m.

ex; Brian and mary run three miles without gettig tired ( Brian e mary correm 3 km sem se cansar)

My company is 15 miles from here ( minha empresa fica ou está à 15 km daquí)

Para peso usa-se as unidades ounce e pound.

ex:

my friend bruno is extremely fat. He is 249 pounds. He need to lose weight ( meu amigo bruno está extremamente gordo. Ele está com 249 libras ou 112 kg e 94 gramas. Ele precisa perder peso)

I want an 10 ounce hicken steak, please ( eu quero 226 gramas de bife de frango, por favor)

Ainda falando sobre a primeira parte do vídeo É importante observar à forma como as frases são faladas. Porque como você deve saber, o inglês falado (spoken engish) é o grande gargalo da maioria dos aprendizes da língua inglesa, principalmente de estudantes brasileiros. A grande questão é que tendemos à pronunciar as palavras isoladamente. Esta é uma forma errada de se praticar a conversação que consequentemente gera dificuldade para se entender o que um nativo da língua inglesa está falando. Por exemplo, ao ler o que está sendo falado no video a pessoa tem a impressão de que é capaz de entender o que será dito. Mas é só quando ela tenta ler junto com o comentarista do vídeo que sente a grande dificuldade. Neste vídeo por exemplo começa : We're inside a tree, 15 feet above a lake. High in the Rocky mountains. We're in a nest of wood duck eggs, hatching after a 30-day incubation. Em relação a tradução um estudante intermediario não sente dificuldade.Mas quando ouve, pensa até se tratar de outro texto, não do que texto que acabara de ler. Isto acontece, porque no vídeo apresentado acontece um fenômeno chamado linking words. Isto significa que numa conversação normal falada por um nativo da lingua inglesa as palavras tendem a juntar-se uma à outra. por exemplo: neste pedacinho do texto "We're inside a tree.." acontece o linking words com a palavra "inside" e a letra "a". Se você observar com atenção perceberá que o DE da palavra inside se conecta com a letra "a", e que o DE da palavra "inside" assumi o som de R. Então ouvimos: Insi de-a (ra) = insi-ra.

è desta forma que ouvimos "insi-ra tree" (insaira a tree). Seguindo o texto lemos: 15 feet above a lake. Novamente acontece o linking word entre a palavra "feet" e a letra "a" da palavra "above" ficando: fee-ra bove ( firabove).

Ficou confuso, não é mesmo? não se preocupe, isso é mais fácil do que você imagina. Tenho certeza que a medida que você for observando pausadamente com atenção você perceberá e se acostumará com sete fenômeno na conversação.

JEFFREY BROWN: And we take a closer look now at today's move and the reaction with Catherine Mann, professor of economics at the Brandeis International Business School. She served previously on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. And David Smick, a global economic policy strategist and author of the book "The World is Curved: Hidden Dangers to the Global Economy."

Catherine Mann, I will stall start with you.

Fill in the picture a bit. What exactly is the problem that the central banks were trying to address?

CATHERINE MANN, Brandeis University International Business School: Well, what they were trying to address was that it's become more expensive since the summer, actually, for banks to borrow from each other in the overnight market.

And that's the way that banks fund themselves, is that they borrow in the overnight market from each other. And since the summer, we have been looking at the interest rate that they charge each other has been rising and rising and rising. It's now at a level or was earlier today at the level right before the crisis with Lehman Brothers.

And so the central banks were looking at this really expensive cost of banks borrowing from each other as really an indicator of the amount of stress that was happening and the lack of trust between banks since they weren't going to lend to each other. So that's really what they were trying to address here.

It's a narrow bank-to-bank funding question, but, of course, from that narrow place, you get into a lot of difficulty on lending more broadly to companies and to businesses.

JEFFREY BROWN: Well, so, David Smick, the markets, well, they loved it, 490 points. What did they see?

DAVID SMICK, "The World is Curved: Hidden Dangers to the Global Economy": Well, you can't deny -- any time a 4 percent increase in equity market happens, it's significant, but not -- probably not as significant as we'd like.

I agree with Catherine. This was about trust. And I think it's confusing for a lot of people. What's going on here is that in the summer, the European banks decided they didn't trust each other. And the interbank market froze. So the European Central Bank said, we well into the interbank market.

And so everything worked fine until just the last week or so, when suddenly the European banks said we don't trust the European Central Bank. We're not sure it's going to be around the ways things are going.

JEFFREY BROWN: They don't trust each other because they don't know how much of their own problems are connected to...

DAVID SMICK: Part of it is, too, yes, there's so much -- there's like a web of interconnectivity, but they are not -- but what's interesting now is that the global central banks, led by the Fed, said, well, do you trust us? And if they don't trust the world central banks collectively, then we have a problem.

But I think it was successful, in that what you have right now is massive amount of liquidity around the world sitting on the sidelines with very cheap equity markets. So any time there's a little bit of positive news, you see this explosion in stock markets, and because it's so cheap and there's so much money just sitting there ready to move.

JEFFREY BROWN: Catherine Mann, what would you add to about why the markets just took off like that?

CATHERINE MANN: Well, the markets have been -- the markets are basically run by algorithmic trading these days or traders. Nobody's making investments in the stock market thinking they're getting a long-term investment in the company that they're buying a stock for.

So all we're looking at is trading on news. This was big news. And so when the market opened here in the United States, the market just responded to that news in a very positive way. I think, though, that one of the downsides of this additional liquidity being put into the global marketplace is that it provides more ammunition for the traders in the marketplace who want to bet against the central bank -- or against the European Central Bank in particular, or want to bet against some of those sovereign governments in Europe that are running some difficulties.

So this excess liquidity or a lot of liquidity does have a downside. And I think that we aren't thinking exactly how that ammunition is going to be used. We're thinking it's going to be used for good, but there's no guarantee that it's going to be used for good.

JEFFREY BROWN: Well, David Smick, I mean, it goes to this larger question of Europe which we have talked about so many times on the program.

Today's action, how much does it address or not address those deeper problems?

DAVID SMICK: Well, it really is a sideshow.

If you look at today and you say, when's the last time that the global central banks got together, it was three days after the Lehman crisis in 2008.

JEFFREY BROWN: That was a big moment.

DAVID SMICK: And you know what? The stock market, the Dow went up 6 percent, not 4 percent.

The problem is that for the next three months, global stock markets dropped 30 percent, and growth globally, including in the U.S., fell off the table. The problem is, this is a sovereign -- a solvency problem in Europe, not a liquidity problem. The -- you have a 5 trillion euro solvency problem that has to be financed by at least, it looks like, 6 percent, sometimes 7 percent or higher.

And that is going to put enormous strain on the Europeans. So I would look at it and say they haven't really solved the problem of solvency. They have got this nice little takeoff. It's a reprieve, but we're really back to square one in dealing with the problem.

The other thing that I would say is, I -- I think that the people who are selling Europe and have been in the last few weeks are not traders in New York, hedge funds, speculators, because they're barred from doing it. The people who are selling European sovereign debt right now are the Europeans.

The European banks are selling themselves, because they're saying, we don't have confidence in our leadership.

JEFFREY BROWN: Yes.

Now, Catherine Mann, what about the American risk here? I mean, it was enough to get the Federal Reserve involved, right?

CATHERINE MANN: Well, I think that the fact that this was a coordinated effort I think is important, because it does take the spotlight off of any individual nation state or individuals, national financial institutions, that, oh, we're going to try to help them in particular.

But it is a fact that the foreign branches of -- or the U.S. branches of foreign banks -- in other words, they're a European bank, they have a branch in New York -- they are ones who are -- were particularly tight in being able to get funding, because the U.S. banks that were sitting around them in New York were closest to the accident waiting to happen.

And so they were the ones that were most restrictive in their willingness to lend to those U.S. branches of foreign banks. But I do want to go back to the issue of whether or not this is just a Band-Aid and is really not addressing the underlying problem in Europe.

It's very similar to the type of intervention that the central banks did before Lehman. And then, of course, we have additional problems after that. The central bank intervention that was coordinated at the time didn't solve the underlying problems of the housing market.

Similarly, this intervention in Europe is not going to solve, it doesn't even come close to addressing the political problem that they face there, that it's a fiscal problem. National governments have spent too much money, they have borrowed too much over a long period of time. And for Greece in particular, there has to be some write-down of that -- those debt obligations, those so-called haircuts.

Você já deve ter ouvido que o principal segredo para desenvolver a capacidade de ouvir (listening skills) é ouvindo bastante os mais diversos sotaques nos mais diversos contextos.Mas saber disso não é suficiente para que você entenda o inglês falado (spoken english).O tão necessario "ouvir" deve ser feito com critério, ou seja, é preciso aprender ouvir.Na minha opinião e também de diversos especialistas a internet é o hoje o meio mais eficiente para se adquirir fluência em inglês.Através da internet você tem à sua disposição podcasts, videos com transcripts e exercicios completamente gratuitos para desenvolver todos os aspectos da fluência como: listen (ouvir), read (ler), write (escrever) e speak (falar).Depois que descobrí o poder da internet decidir definitivamente abandonar escolas convencionais que diga se de passagem estão absoletos no quesito fluência em inglês.Hoje em dia a internet é meu (a) professor.Por isso na medida do possível estarei compartilhando a descoberta de sites interessantes sobre o ensino e metodos de aprendizado.
Mas voltando ao assunto principal ( listening skills) estarei postando podcasts com seus respectivos transcripts para desenvolver seu listening skills.
Listening skills é na minha opinião o principal aspecto porque as escolas convencionais de inglês mesmo sendo absoletas, conseguem desenvolver aos trancos e barrancos o read e o write skills.Isto significa que numa destas escolas você conseguirá aprender a ler e a escrever razoavelmente bem.Mas isto não capacita as pessoas a interagir com um falante nativo por falta de habilidade em entender o que está sendo dito.Desenvolver seu listening skills diferentemente de saber somente ler e escrever nos habilita a interagir sem medo com native speaker (falantes nativos).
As convencionais escolas de inglês no Brasil pecam por substimar este importante aspecto levando -os a inverter a ordem das coisas.Talvez surja a pergunta do por quê que um aluno passa anos dentro de uma escola e ainda assim não consegue falar em inglês.A resposta a esta pergunta é simplesmente por não ter sido desenvolvido a capacidade de entender o inglês falado.Isto é uma questão de lógica.Porque veja bem: se eu não entendo o que alguém diz não tem como formular uma resposta ou interação com esta pessoa, é uma questão de lógica.Conclui-se então que listening e speaking devem andar juntos respectivamente.

Esclarecendo o GET

Acredito que todo aprendiz de Inglês no processo de sua aprendizagem se deparará com uma palavrinha no minímo incomoda.Esta palavrinha é o famoso e complicado 'Get'. Provavelmente você já teve a experiência de está entendendo um texto quando derrepente----GET,GET , GET e mais GET. Nestas horas a frustação é certa. Porque o texto parece não fazer mais sentido simplesmente porque o bendito Get se interpôs de maneira inconveniente.

Descobrir que a razão de tanta frustação é devido a interpretação unilateral da palavra Get, ou seja, um único signicado visto de forma totalmente isolada. A palavra ou verbo Get isoladamente significa 'Conseguir'.Até aí tudo bem. O problema é que o aprendiz de inglês em seus primeiros passos traduz 'Get' com o sentido de 'Conseguir' em todo texto que ver pela frente. Quem taduz desta maneira ficará totalmente embaraçado diante de um texto como este: "He got his father to buy him a car". Traduzindo isoladamente, a frase ficaria assim: "Ele conseguiu seu pai para comprar para ele um carro" . Totalmente sem nexo não é mesmo?. A tradução correta seria a seguinte: "Ele convenceu seu pai a dar-lhe um carro". Talvez surja a pergunta por quê?. Nesta frase especificamente 'Get' assumiu o sentido de convencer.De agora em diante você aprenderá que 'Get' está entre as principais palavras entendida somente observando seu contexto. Isto é, dependendo do contexto Get assume vários significados como: ficar, ganhar, receber, conseguir, arranjar, comprar, pegar, trazer, buscar, chegar, ir, ter, preparar, ser, convencer, mandar, entender e etc.
Um alerta muito importante é não tentar aprender todos os significados de Get de uma só vez. Por isso este post visa mostrar separadamente cada significado com seus respectivos exemplos.

Get com o significado de:

FICAR
It’s getting dark. - Está ficando escuro.
We got tired yesterday. - Ficamos cansados ontem.
I’m getting confused. - Estou ficando confuso, estou fazendo confusão.

Ao longo da vida é inevitável de vez quando estarmos diante de situações onde se faz necessário concordar e discordar de uma opinião. Claro que nossa opinião se de concordância ou discordância precisa ser transmitida de forma menos perigosa pautada pela boa educação. Certamente que em português sabemos fazer isto muito bem. Olá amigos e amigas!. E vamos para o quarto vídeo. Hoje, o collocation será com a palavra "Party". E então surge a dúvida atroz: make a party ou Do a party?. Se você optou por uma das duas respostas ficará surpreso ou surpresa ao descobrir que nenhuma das respostas estão corretas. Portanto, isso reforçar o conceito de que sem praticar ou conhecer as combinações das palavras em inglês, é impossível chegar ao um nível natural de comunicação em inglês. Não tenho dúvidas acerca de seu fascínio pelo primeiro vídeo que inevitavelmente lhe trouxe à analisar com muita empolgação este segundo vídeo.
Hoje, aprenderemos quais palavras combinam com a palavra Ideia= Idea em inglês. O interessante é que algumas combinações são no início muito fáceis, como por por exemplo "Ideia excelente"= Excellent Idea", péssima ideia= Bad Idea e assim por diante. Agora você saberia me dizer qual a combinação em inglês que expressaria "Ideia de girico" em inglês?..bom, já sei..o negócio como a complicar, né?..Mas fique tranquilo e assista o vídeo que você verá que não é tão complicado quanto parece.

Olá friends ! Estou aqui para compartilhar minhas novas descobertas e dicas. E começo a partir de hoje a compartilhar uma série super interessantíssima de vídeos , do renomado professor Denilso de lima.
Neste primeiro vídeo Denilso de lima começa falando de um termo muito relevante para a correta formação de palavras em inglês_ collocations. Mas o que seriam colocations? Bom, nada e ninguém melhor para explicar isso do que próprio protagonista do vídeo em questão. No entanto, posso lhe adiantar que colocar em pratica os diversos collocations que existem, te livrará do hábito que vamos dizer assim.: tipicamente brasileiro de traduzir tudo ao pé da letra palavra por palavra. Como você verá, não é possível ganhar fluência no idioma inglês aprendendo as palavras apenas individualmente. Isso porque as palavras para fazerem sentido em uma conversação normal precisam esta em combinação com diversas outras. Os collocations nos darão um idea muito clara de equivalência entre inglês e português, no livrando definitivamente do hábito de traduzir palavra por palavra que quase sempre nos faz incorrer em erros gritantes. E de uma forma muito leve e didática, o professor Denilso explica neste vídeo e nos muitos outros vídeos desta série de collocations.

Neste video com um pouco mais de 3 minutos, temos muito a aprender com relação ao entendimento do inglês falado (spoken english).Acredito que videos é a forma mais rápida para apurarmos o ouvido no entendimento do inglês falado.Isto porque além do audio que em sí já é bastante útil temos também a expressão facial.As expressões das pessoas do video é um recurso que alcança além do nosso sentido auditivo.O que nós vemos é mais facil para a memorização.
A partir de agora você começará a entender de tal forma este video que não precisará mais de nenhuma legenda ou transcrição para que você consiga entender o que barack obama está dizendo.Para isso vamos analizar detalhadamente varias partes deste discurso audivisual.

Vamos começar o primeiro bloco de palavras :
No início do vídeo barack obama diz : "As many of you know over the last few months i've been thinking hard about my plans for two thousand eight"
A primeira palavra "As" que traduzido é a palavra "COMO" em português é também o equivalente a palvra "LIKE" em inglês que também é "COMO" em português.
A grande duvida é em que momento aplicar estas palavras.
vejas estes exemplos:
1.I work as a teacher.
2.I work like a teacher.

Em qual das duas a pessoa é realmente professor? Se você disse que é na primeira então acertou; o "AS" está lá para dizer que a pessoa é o que é - no caso, professor. Já na segunda sentença foi usado o "LIKE"; ou seja, a pessoa ou faz de conta que é professor ou tem um emprego parecido ao de professor - sabe-se lá!
Quando o presidente obama disse: "As many of you know" ele estava se referindo a algo que ele acredita ser verdadeiro.
Então lembre aí: use o "AS" quando for de verdade; mas, use o "LIKE" quando for de faz de conta ou parecido! Veja as duas sentenças abaixo:
1. I eat like a horse
2. I eat as a horse
Se nesta frase você estiver se referindo a uma pessoa, voce provavelmente estará se utilizando de uma forma figurada para expressar o quanto esta pessoa come.OU seja você usará o "LIKE": I eat like a horse. Se por outro lado você estiver querendo falar literalmente, ou seja, ele realmente come como um cavalo.Neste caso você deverá utilizar o"AS": He eat as a horse.

UMA DICA IMPORTANTE: Para que seu entendimento do inglês falado seja proveitoso é importante que você esteja determinado a ouvir quantas vezes forem necessarios apenas uma parte do video.Por isso não é interessante apenas ouvir.É importante também escrever.Porque quando você escreve seu cerébro irá memorizar a forma falada e forma escrita do que está sendo dito no video

As many of you know, over the last few months I've been thinking hard about my plans for 2008. Running for the presidency is a profound decision -- a decision no one should make on the basis of media hype or personal ambition alone -- and so before I committed myself and my family to this race, I wanted to be sure that this was right for us and, more importantly, right for the country.

I certainly didn't expect to find myself in this position a year ago. But as I've spoken to many of you in my travels across the states these past months, as I've read your emails and read your letters, I've been struck by how hungry we all are for a different kind of politics. So I've spent some time thinking about how I could best advance the cause of change and progress that we so desperately need.

The decisions that have been made in Washington these past six years, and the problems that have been ignored, have put our country in a precarious place. Our economy is changing rapidly, and that means profound changes for working people. Many of you have shared with me your stories about skyrocketing health care bills, the pensions you've lost and your struggles to pay for college for your kids. Our continued dependence on oil has put our security and our very planet at risk. And we're still mired in a tragic and costly war that should have never been waged.

But challenging as they are, it's not the magnitude of our problems that concerns me the most. It's the smallness of our politics. America's faced big problems before. But today, our leaders in Washington seem incapable of working together in a practical, common sense way. Politics has become so bitter and partisan, so gummed up by money and influence, that we can't tackle the big problems that demand solutions. And that's what we have to change first. We have to change our politics, and come together around our common interests and concerns as Americans.

This won't happen by itself. A change in our politics can only come from you -- from people across our country who believe there's a better way and are willing to work for it. Years ago, as a community organizer in Chicago, I learned that meaningful change always begins at the grassroots, and that engaged citizens working together can accomplish extraordinary things. So even in the midst of the enormous challenges we face today, I have great faith and hope about the future -- because I believe in you.

And that's why I wanted to tell you first that I'll be filing papers today to create a presidential exploratory committee. For the next several weeks, I'm going to talk with people from around the country, listening and learning more about the challenges we face as a nation, the opportunities that lie before us, and the role that a presidential campaign might play in bringing our country together. And on February 10th, at the end of these discussions and in my home state of Illinois, I'll share my plans with my friends, neighbors, and fellow Americans.
