It does everything you want it to and more, right? Not quite! You can install 'BlackBerry Apps' onto your handset and make your BlackBerry do even more!

KEY Words You Need To Know:

OTA - Over the Air. This means you can download the application through your BlackBerry browser and install it straight onto your BlackBerry. You don't need the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for an 'ota download'.

App - Application. Just like you can install extra software onto your computer/laptop, you can install extra software onto your BlackBerry. A software program for your BlackBerry is called an 'app'.

RIM - Research In Motion. The company that makes the BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager - The CD and software program that came with your BlackBerry. It runs on your PC and allows you to do all kinds of stuff with your BlackBerry, like backup all your data, install new applications, etc.

3rd Party - This is when a company other than RIM has made the BlackBerry app. RIM makes some apps for your BlackBerry (like the facebook app, and flickr app, but most BlackBerry apps are made by other companies. Usually they will make a profit by selling their apps, but sometimes offer them for free. Sometimes they also offer the basic app for free and the upgraded 'premium' version for a fee.

The Thing To Know About These IM Apps

The thing about downloading some of these following IM apps is that some carriers don't allow them. Annoying, right? They want you to instead spend lots of money on their SMS charges.

If you can't install any of these Instant Messaging apps give your carrier a call and ask to speak to the BlackBerry team, and ask them to push the download to you. Make them work with you to install it.

Some carriers really do suck, but keep pushing them until they do it. It's just a case of unblocking a port that these apps use to connect with [i think].

Opera Mini

The default web browser on your BlackBerry is good. But it's not perfect. It has lots of good points, and lots of bad points. For example, it does not render web pages as fast as you would like and often has trouble showing you a desktop-faithful rendering of the webpage.

Enter Opera Mini.

Opera is a 2nd browser you can install on your BlackBerry. You can't set it to be your default browser [so clicking on links in emails will always open the default browser], but Opera will put an icon on your home screen for you to click open whenever you like.

It won't fully replace your default browser, but it is really fast browsing webpages that would even crash your BlackBerry browser, so it's good to keep this one around.

Google Maps BlackBerry App

The native Maps application on your BlackBerry will either be BlackBerry Maps, or maybe even a map application from your carrier. While these are ok, Google Maps trumps them on nearly all counts.

More features, satellite images, a tie in to the massive amount of data Google has about the world around you, and even a cool feature to tell you roughly where you are even if you don't have GPS.

If you have a BlackBerry with an unlimited data plan, you need to install Google Maps. It is a solid application and gets fairly regular updates.

Here are some good things about it:

MyLocation - If you don't have a GPS enabled BlackBerry, worry not. Google Maps application can still locate where you are. It 'triangulates' your signal just like they do on 24, and offers you an approximate location which is always pretty damn close.

Latitude - If you have lots of friends (lucky you) and want to know where they are, just click open the Latitude option. If you have shared your location with your friends then you can see where they are, and they can see where you are. you can pause it at any time, cancel it completely, or leave it going constantly to give your friends a God-like power over you. It's up to you...

Full Satellite View - Bringing the power of Google Earth and Google Maps to your teeny BlackBerry screen. It's just what you expect, works fast (faster over wifi or 3g), and lets you zoom right in to your house and look at your garden. Always cool.

Directions - What Map application would be complete without the power to get you to where you want to be? Combined with MyLocation (see above), you'll never get lost again.

If you have ever heard a song on the radio and wished you could identify it, Shazam is for you.

Press the Shazam icon, hold your BlackBerry up to the music, and in about 15 seconds it will tell you what the song was, who was singing it, and what album it's on.

It's worked every time for me, but does have a few limitations. It can't identify live music and doesn't have a link to buy the music just like the iPhone/iTunes version does.

But I can easily live with those!

BlackBerry app for Gmail

If you have a Gmail account, and you DON'T get the emails sent to your BlackBerry like your other emails, then the gmail app is for you. It puts a nice little mail icon on your homescreen, and when you click it open you can access any and all of your gmail accounts in a fast and fancy interface.

Just like everything Google makes, it is free. And just like almost-everything Google makes, it is a must-have.

Google Sync

Keep your BlackBerry contacts and calendar in sync with your Google mail contacts and calendar

Google created this Sync application so that dear old BlackBerry users can keep their BlackBerry calendar and BlackBerry contacts completely in sync with their Google calendar and Gmail contacts.

You can set the application to run on Manual mode, and only sync when you want it to, or on Automatic mode.

While automatic mode sounds great, the trouble is you can't set the sync schedule. So if you have an older BlackBerry model you may find it jamming up as it tries to sync up at unknown intervals. So manual might be best, especially if you don't mind not having up-to-the-minute syncing.

Apple wins global smartphone crown, Nokia now 3rd

Apple, followed closely by Samsung Electronics, overtook Nokia in global smartphone market share during the second quarter.

Apple controlled nearly a fifth of the smartphone market, or a share of 18.5 percent, as it shipped more than 20 million iPhones, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics. Samsung Electronics wasn't far behind, with 17.5 percent of the market share and 19.2 million smartphones shipped. Nokia fell to third, with its market share plunging by more than half to 15.2 percent from 38.1 percent a year ago.

The ever-shifting top of the smartphone food chain is illustrative of the ultra-competitive nature of the business. Over the past year, Nokia has seen its market share drop as consumers opted for more sophisticated operating systems made by Apple and Google. The declines have forced Nokia to partner with Microsoft and switch to its Windows Phone operating system

Samsung to stop releasing data on phone sales

Samsung will no longer provide sales data and forecasts on its mobile phones and tablets.

Announcing the new policy today, the company said that revealing such information may present risks to its business in the face of increased competition. However, analysts believe the move is also related to the company's legal skirmish with Apple, says today's Wall Street Journal(subscription required).

Releasing its second-quarter earnings today, Samsung said that its mobile sales rose 43 percent year over year. The company also reported selling 70 million mobile devices for the quarter, but that figure included its Galaxy Tab tablet, according to the Journal, leaving analysts uncertain how many phones were sold.

Samsung actually recorded a drop in its quarterly earnings but said that smartphone sales continue to grow. A huge contributor to the gain in sales, the company's Galaxy S II smartphone pulled in 5 million in unit sales during its first 85 days

APPLE World's Most Valued Brand

Apple is the world's most valuable brand with a value of $153.3 billion, according to Millard Brown Optimor's annual "BrandZ: Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands" study released today. In just one year, Apple's brand value has increased by 84 percent, the study said.

Google, the leader in the study for four years running, was knocked down to second place this year, losing 2 percent of its brand value to end up at $111.5 billion.

IBM, McDonald's, and Microsoft rounded out the top five with brand values of $100.8 billion, $81 billion, and $78.2 billion in brand value, respectively.

The marketing and advertising industry, not surprisingly, believes strongly in the importance of brand value. "Strong brands, while not immune to the vicissitudes of the market, are more protected, prepared, resourceful and resilient," David Roth of WPP, parent company of Millard Brown Optimor, said in a statement.

If that's the case, Apple's ability to insulate itself from market issues has exploded over the last several years. Millard Brown Optimor said Apple's brand value has increased 859 percent since 2006--the first year of the BrandZ study. Moreover, Apple's year-over-year growth has easily overshadowed the rest of the market. According to the study, the top 100 brands have seen their combined value increase by 17 percent to $2.4 trillion since last year.

Apple wasn't the only fast mover in the study. Facebook's brand value jumped to 35th place, increasing 246 percent year over year to $19.1 billion. China's biggest search engine, Baidu, saw its brand value increase by 141 percent year over year to $22.5 billion, which gave it 29th place.

Such companies have helped tech lead the way in brand value. The researchers said tech companies make up one-third of the top 100 brands worldwide. Amazon.com was also able to beat Wal-Mart to become the most valuable retail brand with a value of $37.6 billion.

Emerging markets are playing a bigger role in the top 100 list. Back in 2006, just two companies from emerging markets made the list. Last year, that tally reached 13. And this year, 19 of the top 100 brands came from emerging markets
