Everything You Need to Know About Dynamic Island

With the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, Apple took the much-maligned notch that houses the TrueDepth camera equipment for Face ID and evolved it into a crucial part of the iPhone interface. Called the Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped area on the ‌iPhone‌ not only accommodates the camera hardware, but also serves as a shape-changing hub for key ‌iPhone‌ alerts.

While the Dynamic Island was initially an ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro feature, Apple expanded it to all iPhone 15 models in 2023. Both the standard ‌iPhone 15‌ models and the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro models have the Dynamic Island, in addition to the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro and Pro Max.

Dynamic Island Design

Prior to the launch of the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro models, all of the rumors depicted a two cutout design with a pill-shaped cutout and a hole punch cutout, and late in the rumor cycle, we learned that Apple would combine the two into one pill-shaped area.

That's exactly what happened, and inside that pill-shaped Dynamic Island, there are actually two hidden cutouts for the hardware necessary to make ‌Face ID‌ work. The space between and around the cutouts is interactive and can display content.

While Apple tried to hide the notch away, and other smartphone manufacturers have minimized cameras as much as possible with small hole punches, the Dynamic Island embraces the need for a camera cutout on the display, cleverly incorporating it into iOS in a way that both blends it into the interface while also putting it front and center.

The Dynamic Island is able to display content that's running in the background, such as timers and music controls, plus it shows interactions like ‌Face ID‌ unlocking, Apple Pay payments, incoming phone calls, and more. It is interactive, so you can tap into it to expand it.

Dynamic Island Shape Shifting

Apple designed the Dynamic Island to change in size and shape depending on what's being displayed. At rest, the Dynamic Island is a small rounded black area on the display that's smaller than the notch, taking up less space than before.

In use, it can elongate in either direction, and it can expand to take up the entire width of the display if needed.

When making an ‌Apple Pay‌ payment, for example, the Dynamic Island morphs into a square shape to match the ‌Face ID‌ confirmation, and while on a call, it expands into a large rectangle so you can quickly access phone controls.

Dynamic Island Functions

The Dynamic Island is able to display both active and background tasks. When you unlock your ‌iPhone‌, for example, you'll see the unlock icon in the Dynamic Island, or when you connect AirPods, you can see the connection status. Dynamic Island capabilities are listed below:

Interactions

When the Dynamic Island is displaying an app that's running in the background, such as a timer, phone call, or now playing widget for music, you can interact with it.

Tap the Dynamic Island to launch the app that's in the Dynamic Island, or long press to activate a widget that has quick access control options.

Split Island

Since the TrueDepth camera system is actually housed in two separate cutouts that are merged through software, the Dynamic Island can do a neat trick where it separates into a small pill on the left and a circle on the right, both of which are able to display different information at the same time, such as music controls and a timer.

The Dynamic Island can display up to two background activities at once. You can interact with both apps, opening them up and swapping their location on the Dynamic Island.

Live Activities

Live Activities work with the Dynamic Island, so you can track live content from the ‌iPhone‌'s Home Screen. You can watch as an Uber drive approaches, get live sports scores on a game you're following, and more.

Up to two Live Activities can be tracked using the Dynamic Island at the same time.

Third-Party Apps

Third-party app developers can take advantage of the Dynamic Island, showing content in the area using an Apple-provided API. Some developers have created games and other fun Dynamic Island additions, and some apps like Spotify and YouTube show up in the Dynamic Island automatically when you play content.

The Dynamic Island can display notifications for Apple Pay transactions, low battery warnings, AirDrop transfers, and more on iPhone 15 and the iPhone 14 Pro models. Here's how it works.

The notch at the top of the iPhone has been a familiar sight for the past several generations. But other than housing the True Depth front camera, the notch is wasted space that eats into your screen. To make that space more useful, Apple has turned the notch into an interactive feature called the Dynamic Island for the latest iPhone models.

The Dynamic Island was only available on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, but it is now available on all iPhone 15 models. The feature doesn't need to be enabled or configured for the Dynamic Island to do its job; it automatically kicks in when your phone is unlocked and any supported activity is running. Here's how to use the Dynamic Island, and what it can do to enhance your iPhone experience.

What Can the Dynamic Island Do?

The Dynamic Island can display notifications for Apple Pay transactions, low battery warnings, AirDrop transfers, Apple Maps directions, incoming phone calls, music being played, SharePlay sessions, and screen recordings.

The feature even works with a variety of third-party apps to display relevant information, including Carrot Weather, Flighty, Google Maps, Pestle, SmartGym, and more.

In many cases, you can press down on the Dynamic Island to open the activity in a larger window. In other cases, you’re able to tap the Dynamic Island to launch the activity in its full-screen app. You can also swipe on it to expand or contract the window. Here are several examples of how this works.

1. Authenticate Apple Pay Transactions

Make a purchase at a physical or online retailer using Apple Pay. Double-click the side button to confirm the transaction, and the Dynamic Island displays a swirling green image to indicate the Face ID authentication. After your face has been authenticated and the purchase has gone through, the image turns into a green smiley face.

2. Visualize AirDrop Transfers

The Dynamic Island serves as a visual status indicator for AirDrop transfers. When items are shared with you, an indicator will appear on the Dynamic Island to show the progress of the file transfer. After the process is completed, a checkmark then pops up in the same spot.

3. Show Privacy Indicators

Your iPhone displays a visual privacy indicator whenever an app or service is accessing your camera or microphone. These indicator lights appear inside the Dynamic Island on phones that support the feature. Open an app with access to your camera, and a green dot pops up in the display; open one that can can access your microphone, and an orange dot appears.

4. Set a Timer

You can monitor a timer through the Dynamic Island. First, open the Clock app and set a timer. The Dynamic Island then displays the countdown in minutes. Press down on the display to expand the information so you can see the timer and also pause or stop it. Tap the Dynamic Island to open the full Clock app.

5. Control Phone Calls

When you're on a phone call and head to the Home screen, the Dynamic Island displays the ongoing duration of the call and a gauge showing the volume level. Press down on the display to see the duration and name or number of the caller, change the audio source, and hang up the call. Tap the display to open the Phone app.

6. Follow Apple Map Directions

When navigating with Apple Maps, you can return to the Home screen to see turn-by-turn directions in the Dynamic Island. Press down on the display to show the next turn with an option to end the route. Tap the Dynamic Island, and the Maps app opens in full screen mode.

7. Play Music or Other Audio

Fire up a song, podcast episode, audiobook, or any other form of audio content. At the Home screen, the Dynamic Island shows you a small image of album art and a volume gauge. Press down on the Dynamic Island to see a larger display with the album art, the name of the song, and the artist, as well as a control to pause, play, go back, go forward, and change the audio output.

8. Record Your Screen

If you’ve kicked off a recording of your screen activity, the Dynamic Island shows a record button that tells you the screen is being captured. Tap or press down on the Dynamic Island to show a timer and a button to stop the recording. Press the Stop button, and the display indicates that the recording was saved to your photo library.

A new look is coming to the iPhone 17 series, it’s reported. If correct, it will mean that the Pro models will have a strikingly different Dynamic Island for the first time since the feature launched. There will also be changes to at least two of the Pro’s cameras, it seems.

New Dynamic Island

The new phones will include a “much narrower Dynamic Island,” according to a research note for investment bank Haitong International by analyst Jeff Pu, and spotted by MacRumors.

This would be the first change to the display feature since it arrived on the iPhone 14 Pro. It will be made possible by Apple adopting a smaller metalens, as it’s referred to, for the Face ID system.

The magic of the Dynamic Island is it hides the front camera and other sensors by circling it in a lozenge of blackness, growing and shrinking to add extra information to the display. So, a smaller island would only add to the effect. The analyst specified the Pro Max but I’d guess the Pro will have it, too.

Better Cameras Coming

Pu had other things to say. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will see a significant upgrade to two of the cameras: the telephoto and front-facing cameras, to be precise.

Both currently have 12-megapixel resolution sensors but Pu claims the front-facing camera will move to 24 megapixels, while the telephoto will gain a 48-megapixel sensor. It will mean that all rear cameras on the Pro models will be 48-megapixel resolution next year.

More RAM, New Chip, Same Display

There have already been reports that the 17 Pro and Pro Max will be the first iPhones with 12GB of RAM as discussed in detail here. That’s up from 8GB in the entire iPhone 16 series, which is more than the 6GB on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

And the display sizes will remain the same as on the current models, that is, 6.3-inches and 6.9-inches respectively on the two Pro models.

Finally, the A19 Pro chip will be what’s powering the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max and they will use a 3-nanometer process, not the 2nm tech predicted by some—that’ll arrive with the iPhone 18 series, it seems.

Big changes are coming, it seems.

You've got mail -- but your inbox is full. If you've had your Gmail account for a few years, you're probably close to using up the 15GB of free storage. Even if you delete a few spammy emails or unsubscribe to those newsletters you stopped reading, you might still have thousands of unread messages. And if the idea of cleaning out your Gmail inbox fills you with dread, and you don't want to start paying for extra storage, read on: We'll show you the easiest way to get your account back to inbox zero while keeping all your old email.

All you need to do is create a second Gmail account to store all of your current messages. There's no restriction on the number of free Google accounts you can own, which means you can set one up as a dedicated archive account, and then transfer all your old emails to it.

Transferring your Gmail messages is also a great strategy if you have a school or business Gmail account that you won't be able to access permanently. Most universities and businesses will deactivate your account once you are no longer a student or employee, so if you want to view your old messages and files, you'll have to port them to a personal account before you lose access.

How much data can you store on Gmail?

Fifteen gigabytes of free storage may sound like a lot when you make a Gmail account, but it gets filled up quickly. For starters, the 15GB isn't just used for email: it also includes the files you've saved in your Google Drive and Google Photos.

If you frequently send or receive messages that contain large files such as videos, or if you find yourself uploading a lot of pictures and videos to your Google Photos, then it won't be long before you'll see the "Account storage is full" notification. This means that you will no longer be able to send or receive emails on this account, so you'll want to do something ASAP.

The quickest solution is to upgrade to a Google One account. Even if you opt for the least expensive plan -- 100GB for $20/year -- you'll still end up paying money to store old emails that you might not even need anymore.

If you don't want to buy more storage, you can always delete your old emails. You can get back a surprising amount of storage space by putting large files in the trash. Gmail makes it easy for you to identify and delete files by size. Even so, that option might seem tedious; maybe you don't want to spend hours sifting through correspondence from a decade or more ago, deciding which memories to keep and which to get rid of forever.

There's always the option to download large files to your desktop before you delete them from your Google account, but at some point, you'll probably run into the same issue with your local files and have to manage the storage space on your device.

This brings us to our "nuclear option:" Transferring all your emails to a new Gmail account.

How to transfer your Gmail messages to a new email account

Before you start the Gmail transfer process, we recommend that you back up your emails. You can do this by downloading your emails either to your computer or an external hard drive. You can delete the backup after you finish transferring the emails to your new account if you like, but it's always a good idea to have an extra copy stored locally.

To back up your Gmail messages, go to Google Takeout. Using our test Gmail account that held about 75,000 messages, we got a download from Google Takeout in about 2 hours.

Once you've saved a copy of your emails, you're ready to begin transferring them. Here are the steps you need to take:

1. Start by logging into your original Gmail account, clicking the "gear" icon in the top right and clicking See all settings.

2. Select the Forwarding POP/IMAP tab, and then select the option Enable POP for all mail (POP stands for Post Office Protocol).

3. You'll have several options under When messages are accessed with POP. To automatically delete the emails from your original account after the transfer, select delete Gmail's copy.

4. Select Save Changes.

Wow it's time to create your new account and transfer all your messages there:

If you haven't already done so, create your brand new, inbox-zero Gmail account -- we'll call this your archive account.

1. Login to your new archive account, click the gear icon at the top and select See all settings.

2. Select the Accounts and Import tab at the top, and then select Add a mail account next to Check mail from other accounts.

3. In the pop-up window, enter in the name of your original Gmail account. Select Next.

4. Select Import emails from my other account (POP3), andselect Next again.

5. Enter the password of your original Gmail account. You might also be required to create a Google app password (see note below).

6. Select 995 under Port.

7. Check these 3 boxes: Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail, Label incoming messages, Archive incoming messages (Skip the Inbox)

8. Select Add Account.

You'll probably need to create a Google app password to transfer Gmail messages

We tested this Gmail message transfer process twice, and both times the standard password for the Gmail accounts did not work. After a bit of research, we determined that we'd need to create a temporary "app password" to sync the accounts.

Google app passwords are 16-digit passcodes created for "less secure" apps or devices to access your Google account. They work exactly like your Google password.

If your regular Google password doesn't work for syncing Gmail accounts, visit https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords to create an app password. Simply create a name for the password -- we used "Transfer Bulk Email" -- and then hit the Create button. You'll get a pop-up window with your new 16-digit passcode.

Once you've created the app password, return to step 6 of the instructions above and use that new app password instead of your usual password.

Important: Google will only display your app password once. After you've created it, you can't ask to see it again, so be sure to write it down or otherwise record it after it's been created.

Google's own Help Center mentions that "app passwords aren't recommended and are unnecessary in most cases." So once you're done transferring your Gmail messages, we recommend deleting your app password.

What happens after my Gmail accounts are synced?

Once you've successfully linked your new Gmail archive account to your original account, your emails should begin to transfer automatically. The process could take several hours or days, depending on how many emails you have.

In our test account with about 75,000 messages, we found that it took Gmail about 2 full days to transfer all of them from the original account to the new archived mail account.

Important: After transferring your Gmail messages to your archived mail account, your original Gmail account will place all those messages in the Trash folder, which you'll need to empty manually. Clearing out those 75,000 messages from the Trash took about an hour.

Before transferring Gmail messages, our test account was using a little more than 12GB, or 80%, of Google's free 15GB. After transferring, the account was only using 0.66GB, of which 0.06GB was from Gmail.

What Gmail messages won't be transferred?

We found that Gmail transferred all of our messages except for two categories -- Drafts and Spam.

You'll need to decide what to do with your Drafts manually. Spam messages are automatically deleted every 30 days, so you can let Gmail handle that, or go into the Spam folder yourself after transferring your mail and delete or forward those messages.

Once all of your emails have been imported to your new account, enjoy the experience of inbox zero. You've given your original account a new lease on life.

At this point, there are two last steps: you'll want to stop the automatic transfer process so that you can continue using your original account, and you'll want to delete that app password if you had to make one.

1. Login to your new account, go into your Settings and select See all settings.

2. Select the Accounts and Import tab, and then select delete for your original account (under Check mail from other accounts.)

3. When prompted to Confirm delete mail account, select OK.

If you had to create a Google app password and want to delete it now, go back to https://myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and click the trashcan icon next to the password you created.

Congrats, you're done.

One important final note: Google will delete accounts that have been inactive for more than two years. So make sure you don't completely ignore all your old emails after transferring them. If you don't plan to regularly use your archive account to send email, you can still keep the account active by signing in at least once every two years.

The first Apple Intelligence features are coming next week in iOS 18.1. If you have an AI-compatible iPhone model, the software update will bring a host of new features. But not right away—Apple Intelligence will come with a waitlist. Here’s how you can act now to jump the line.

Process for unlocking Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1

When iOS 18.1 releases next week, it will be available for a wide variety of iPhones. But only the following will support Apple Intelligence:
All iPhone 16 and 16 Pro modelsiPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max

But having a compatible iPhone model isn’t the only requirement for Apple Intelligence. Apple will also use a waitlist for granting access to Apple Intelligence features.

How long you stay on the waitlist will be determined by demand.

To take a picture, press down on the Camera Control button. To start recording video, press and hold the button. (Hopefully, a future update will add a setting that lets you change the hold behavior, allowing it to capture bursts of images instead of video.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro include a new photo-focused button that does more than you might think -- including an Apple Intelligence hook.

The new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro promises to make your iPhone photography more intuitive. More than just a physical button, it's also a touch-sensitive capacitive control surface. You can launch the Camera app (or another camera app of your choice), shuttle through many shooting options and snap a picture -- all without you moving your finger from the control.

Using a physical button to trigger the camera shutter isn't a new concept. You can snap a photo by pressing the volume control button in the Camera app. So if the new Camera Control were simply another button -- even if better positioned when holding the phone in its wide orientation -- it would have felt like a letdown. Instead, it's a feature exclusive to the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

How the Camera Control button works

The iPhone's Camera Control is a physical button that depresses when you push it, but it's also accentuated with haptic feedback like the MacBook trackpads (which feel indistinguishable from a physical mechanism even though the trackpad is just a solid piece of glass).

The surface of the button is a smooth capacitive surface that responds to the motion of your fingertip. (The MacBook Pro Touch Bar technology lives on!)

When you lightly press the button -- exerting some pressure on the surface but not enough to depress the switch -- an onscreen overlay appears. Did you notice how iOS 18 introduced a subtle user interface animation that shows a black indent where a physical button press occurs? The Camera Control button extends that area to an overlay where the Camera Control options reside.

One of the new standout iOS 18 features is the ability to remove the default Camera icon from the lock screen and replace it with something else. I've personally never used this shortcut, preferring to swipe from the right edge to open the app.

Now, pressing the Camera Control button quickly launches the built-in Camera app, which is arguably faster because it's positioned near where your thumb or finger rests while holding the iPhone.

If you find yourself accidentally launching the app when you don't mean to, you can require a double-press: Go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control and under Launch Camera select Double Click.

Capture a photo or video the 'traditional' way

Camera ergonomics are often overlooked, but they can mean the difference between composing a shot comfortably and twisting your fingers into pretzels to tap the shutter button onscreen.

To take a picture, press down on the Camera Control button. To start recording video, press and hold the button. (Hopefully, a future update will add a setting that lets you change the hold behavior, allowing it to capture bursts of images instead of video. You can already do that by pressing the Volume Up button, but only after enabling the option under Settings > Camera > Use Volume Up for Burst.)

A light press also temporarily hides most of the interface items for a clutter-free look at your subject. If you don't mind the information, go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control and turn off Clean Preview.

Arriving in a software update later -- Apple hasn't specified when -- you will be able to lock focus with a light press and hold of the button, the way you can with a half-press of the shutter button on most cameras. But in the meantime, you can touch and hold on the screen where you want to focus and the app will lock focus and exposure at that point, even if you recompose the shot.

Zoom and switch between the cameras

Perhaps the biggest advantage of the Camera Control is having so many functions available without having to move your fingers all over the screen.

To zoom in and out, you lightly press to bring up a slider and drag to adjust the focal length.

The Cameras option -- represented by an icon that looks like a shutter -- allows you to switch between cameras and their focal lengths, such as selecting the Ultra Wide camera (0.5x zoom) or the Telephoto camera (5x zoom).

Quickly adjust exposure and depth

Also included in the overlay that appears when you lightly double-press the Camera Control button are options for Exposure Compensation and Depth. The latter is the iPhone's way of changing the aperture (it even uses a ƒ icon to indicate f-stops), but because all iPhone cameras include fixed physical apertures (the opening through which light passes through the lens to the image sensor), the control adjusts the simulated depth in Portrait mode; if the camera detects a subject in the scene, it automatically saves depth information.

Adjust the Depth setting for portraits and other scenes with a person or pet as the main subject.

Apple Choose Photographic Styles

Apple has revamped its Photographic Styles feature on the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, replacing the stock filters and making the styles more editable. They're also selectable via the Camera Control. (The iPhone 13, 14 and 15 models still use the Photographic Styles feature introduced in 2021, which operates differently.)

Double-press lightly on the control to view the capture overlay and drag to select the Photographic Styles option. Then slide your finger to preview the styles in real time and choose one.

Camera Control works for capturing video too

These Camera Control options also apply when shooting video. In Apple's event video, a demo suggested that switching between resolutions and frame rates, such as 4K 120 FPS, is possible using the control, but that feature doesn't yet appear. You can zoom, choose cameras and adjust exposure.

Apple also demonstrated how it can be applied in third-party photo and video apps by highlighting the Grid Composer feature in Lux Software's Kino video app, which cycles among types of visible guides.

What about non-photo features of the Camera Control?

The button is reserved for photographic uses, including features that third-party developers include in their photo and video capture apps. If you don't want to take pictures using the control, you can also use it to scan QR codes or launch the Magnifier Control Center tool. Go to Settings > Camera > Camera Control and choose Code Scanner or Magnifier in the list of apps.

But Apple is also sneaking in an Apple Intelligence feature called visual intelligence that uses the camera. It's not available yet, but here's how it will work:

With the iPhone locked, press and hold the Camera Control button to bring up the camera. When you snap a picture in this mode, Apple Intelligence looks up what you're pointing at. In Apple's examples, a person snapped a shot of a restaurant to get more information and check its operating hours and then looked up the breed of a passing dog.
