type="html">

For week 21, gather mayonaisse, parmesan cheese and other suggested items.

STEP 1: 3-MONTH SUPPLY (per adult) - Mayonnaise, parmesan cheese 20 ounces total.
Tip: Watch for great sales in the next few weeks on these items. You can certainly substitute other items for the ones I suggest. You may not think shelf-stable parmesan cheese is for you everyday, but if all you had to eat in a disaster was a can of green beans, your kids may appreciate a sprinkle on top. The suggested amount is a starting place. Don't go overboard! Consider what you use most often and stock more of that item. Or simplify and keep one in the fridge and one on the pantry shelf. Even though we will gather BBQ sauce, ketchup and mustard next week, there may be a great Memorial Day sale for these items this week. So don't be afraid to stock up.
Shelf Life: Varies. Check the label.

STEP 2: DRINKING WATER (per person; always keep in stock) - 14 gallons water
FEMA recommends 1 gallon per day of drinking water per person. That's about 4x24 ct. cases of bottled water per person. "You will also need water for food preparation, bathing, brushing teeth, and dish washing. Store a 3-5 day supply of water (at least 5 gallons for each person)." FEMA
Tip: Around Memorial Day, you can usually find a great price on bottled water. Small bottles are for short-term storage, so slowly go through your supply and replenish. More durable food grade containers are for long-term storage.
Shelf Life: small commercially prepared bottles store indefinitely. Other containers need to be refilled every 6 months. Store off your cement floor on 2x4's or on a shelf.

STEP 3: FINANCIAL RESERVE (per person) - $2.00 +/- per week
Tip: Add to your fund each week for emergencies. Keep some in the bank and some cash in small bills at home.

STEP 4: LONGER-TERM SUPPLY (per person) - Nothing this week

OTHER STORAGE ITEMS
FOOD PREP 1 - Plastic utensils
Tip: Having a small supply of plastic utensils can be useful during disasters when you may not have running water to wash dishes. They are also useful for those summer parties.

PREPAREDNESS GOAL - Photograph Home Contents
Tip: There is no excuse for not taking pictures of items in your home and the outside of your home. These days the ease of cell phone cameras, makes this a no brainer. Documenting your home contents will help if you ever need to show an insurance company what you own.

EQUIPMENT GOAL - Dutch Oven Supplies
Tip: If you are planning on cooking with a dutch oven during an emergency, this is a great time of year to gather your supplies because you will find them on sale.

WEEKLY INVENTORY - Beans, Meat & Soup
How: This week check your supply of these items. Are you stocking enough?

Good luck on your weekly goals. You CAN do it! Here is the printout of the May 2013 Food Storage List. If you are new around here, go to my START HERE page.
Caring for aging parents is something we all face at some point in our lives, but it can happen so suddenly that you feel like you've just jumped on a roller coaster. The time has come that my mom needs to move into a skilled nursing facility, but I am blessed to have a husband who works at such a facility. So we are busy helping my parents prepare to move to Utah.

Imagine being able to ask the man you sleep with any question you have about senior care, and getting an immediate response. I can't say enough about Brad. I am truly blessed.

As a child, guilt creeps in as you consider these life altering changes for a parent. I can't imagine how my Dad feels as a spouse moving my mom to "that place." But we keep reminding ourselves that the extra care she needs is there and we physically can't do it all by ourselves. He has been amazing to work with on the preparations for both of them. And I have loved our visits on the phone where he shares memories and wisdom.

Dad is moving into a senior apartment in the building next door to Mom's skilled nursing facility so he can visit her every day. We are excited for that. And they can attend the same church branch (ward) together without him needing to take her in a car. How I love Utah!

My big sister who lives a few miles from my parents in Oregon, has been helping me figure out how to make this all happen with the least amount of stress possible for my parents. I am grateful for her. Support from family is so necessarry at times like this.

My parents are originally from Utah, so they are actually coming home. There are several relatives still here in the Salt Lake Valley and Utah is the crossroads for my out-of-state siblings as well. And my Dad is an amazing family historian and will love being close to the Family History Library; the largest library of its kind in the world.

Because this is a multi-care campus, as my father advances in age he can get the help he needs by moving to the other buliding and not have to make The Big Move again. He can move to the assisted living floor, get rehab and eventually to the skilled nursing facility if needed. I will be 25 minutes away, but it's a relief to know my husband works in the same facility 5 days a week.

I've learned that taking many visits beforehand to the facility you have chosen, really helps. I've made so many visits that on my last trip a woman in the senior apartments asked me if I was moving in! I told her I was looking for a place for my dad and she said, "I thought you were a bit young."

My first visit brought out all of my fears and emotions. No place could ever be good enough for my parents. Especially when their current home is just perfect for them. But my husband kept reassuring me it would be just fine. The key is focusing on the parent, and not on your own feelings. These types of changes are always hard on children of aging parents.

I remember looking at the senior apartments for Dad. I was critical and paid attention to details like "those plants need some water" and "that carpet looks a bit worn." I tried to imagine him eating lunch and dinner in the dining room with all these "old people." He has always been so strong and independent even at 80. My saving grace was the employees and how kind and attentive they were to the residents. As I watched them serve food and interact I could feel a warm, welcoming spirit.

The second time I visited the senior apartments I measured rooms. I tried to imagine my Dad there with his dog. Could his sofa fit on this wall? Could the picture that currently hangs over their fireplace hang here? How would we set up his office? He definitely wasn't going to need his king-sized bed.

On my visit to the room chosen for my mom, I passed several old people in wheelchairs in the halls. Why were they cluttering the halls? I talked with a nurse and she said they liked getting out of their rooms because they don't want to be in them all day. That was exactly what I would have done if I had been in their situation. As I explained to the nurse what care my mom needed, I felt as if I was apologizing for it. And the nurse confidently said, "That's what we do. We take care of all of that." I love that nurse. Nurses and CNA's are special people with Christlike hearts and hands.

When I looked in Mom's room for the first time, I could only think hospital. It was not at all like her current bedroom with the Shirley Temple dolls on the dresser and Shirley pictures on the walls. It was missing her dresser and the old sewing machine table with the T.V. on top. I tried to image her things in the room, and suddenly saw my mom's sweet face with her familiar gentle smile. (Tears.) So amiable, yet frail at 82. I lifted my shoulders. We would make this room homey and lovely. It just needed some familiar touches. The Shirley Temple pictures were moving in.

By the third visit I had come to grips with this being the place for both of them. I spent time walking around the grounds, and it was lovely! How had I overlooked the beauty of the grounds on my other visits? There were lots of shade trees on the west side and vegetable boxes residents could work on in another garden. And a beautiful walking path all around the parking lot with more gardens. There was also a pretty pioneer home across the street.

I looked over the activities schedule and loved it! My Mom would be doing more and my Dad would be with her. A sigh of relief. All will be well.

Food Storage Goals: May Week 20 - Sauces

Time to get back on track. For week 20, gather sauces as well as other suggested items.

STEP 1: 3-MONTH SUPPLY (per adult) - Sauces 12 ounces total.
Tip: I like to have a supply of sauces and marinades in my food storage. The suggested amount is a starting place. Since we have 5 people at home, I would gather 60 oz. of sauces. You may have 2 people and would gather 24 oz. This could be a variety of teriyaki, soy, tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, marinades, etc. Don't go overboard! Some of these things last more than a year. Consider what you use most often and stock more of that item. Or simplify and keep one in the fridge and one on the shelf. (Don't include BBQ sauce as we will gather it in a few weeks.
Shelf Life: Varies. Check the label.

STEP 2: DRINKING WATER (per person if needed) - 14 gallons water

FOOD PREP 1 - Paper plates
Tip: This is a great month to buy paper plates. These can be useful during disasters when you may not have running water, but are also helpful for those summer parties. I always keep a small supply on hand.

PREPAREDNESS GOAL - Pet 72-hour kit
Tip: If you own a pet, don't forget to put together a 72-hour kit for her. I put items for my dog in a red backpack and included food, water and a plastic bowl. I kept it hanging near her leash in the broom closet. You could certainly be more elaborate but I kept mine simple.

EQUIPMENT GOAL - Charcoal and Lighter fluid
Tip: These items are great for emergency use and barbecues. Make sure you get the right kind of briquettes if you plan to use them for Dutch oven cooking. We made the mistake once and bought the quick light and needless to say, the food did not cook correctly.

WEEKLY INVENTORY - Paper & Plastics
How: Check your supply of paper cups, plates, utensils, napkins, paper towels, etc. Great for everyday use AND emergency use.

Good luck on your weekly goals. You CAN do it! Here is the printout of the May 2013 Food Storage List. If you are new around here, go to my START HERE page.

Whether you are a mother or have a mother, this is a special holiday to reflect on the sacrifice mothers make to bring children into the world and raise them. I have been blessed to be the mother of 7 amazing, talented children. I love each of them and have adored raising them.

But I want to honor my own mother, Maria Torres McCune, who raised me. Here is her bridal portrait. Lovely!

And here she is as an LDS missionary in El Salvador. Beautiful!

This picture was taken at my Gold and Green Ball. Look at her radiant eyes.

And here she is at the side of my Dad, supporting him as he served as the Santiago Chile MTC president.

I love you Mom! Thank you for your devotion to our family, the Gospel and your sweet spirit. You are forever an example to me of "love thy neighbor as thyself." Viva La Maria Pequena. Happy Mother's Day!

And Happy Mother's Day to all of my readers!

The past three weeks I've had some health problems that have taught me several lessons. One of those lessons is when I have planted roots deep in gospel soil, I can endure trials better. I am grateful to know that Heavenly Father is aware of me.

When I turned 50, I decided to be a good girl and have one of those medical procedures we don't like to talk about. The lab results showed a clean bill of health. However, a few days after the procedure, I had excruciating lower back pain.

I've had back problems for years and regularly see a chiropractor, but I hadn't planned on muscle spasms in my lower back followed by neck pain, and then complex migraines.

I felt dizzy and nauseous, and had a difficult time concentrating. I could hardly talk, and it felt like I my tongue was swollen. Looking at the light coming in the window hurt, and there was pressure in my eyebrows and left side of my face and jaw. My teeth even ached. I could feel my left eyelid droop, but it was not obvious.

I decided to see my chiropractor, but his office was closed, so I went to my old DC. He ran some neurology tests and said I could be having a mini-stroke. :-( No one should ever mention the word stroke to you. My daughter took me to the ER to be evaluated. The MRI showed I have a beautiful brain which is a good thing. The ER doctor put on the medical report: complex migraine. I was given some meds, told to consult with a neurologist and was sent home. However, I had daily migraines, back and neck pain for over a week.

I tried massage, meds, ice, and bed rest. Being cooped up in the house was a bit depressing, but going out only triggered another migraine. For those who have experienced bed rest with back pain, you know that you really don't get rested. You have disturbed sleep.

I asked my husband for a priesthood blessing and was grateful for it. Too bad I waited a week to finally ask for one, something I won't do again. Things started to ease up after the blessing. I've prayed a lot to understand what happened and why. I prayed for the doctors to know how to help me, and patience for myself. The word "endure to the end" has taken on a whole new meaning.

As I lay in bed, I took a hard look at mylife. I went through my calendar and made the decision to wipe everything off including blogging, speaking engagements, church assignments and family events. That was extremely difficult for me. But I did it. I talked with my bishop and my Relief Society president for guidance. And I am slowly putting things back on. I have been pondering and working on bringing the essential things first. And taking care of my health is an essential thing.

I am still sore, but it is tolerable. The gentle rehabilitation has begun, and I'm taking vitamins, increasing water, and stretching. I am not without hope. I am very aware God has placed others in my path who have shared ideas to help me. I have never been left alone in all of this.

I am grateful for good friends who offered to drive my youngest to and from school. I love them for that. Grateful to my amazing family who prayed for me and helped around at home.

Spring is absolutely beautiful in my neighborhood, and I missed being outside in it. But today was amazing. I listened to birds chattering in the trees. Watched enormous clouds glide through the sky. Put my hand in the warm soil in the garden and got my fingernails dirty pulling weeds. I smelled the bark and looked at flowers. Such simple things remind me God cares for each of us.

Thank you for your patience and I hope my readers will continue to strive to become prepared both temporally and spiritually. The spiritual preparation is the key to facing our trials.
Best wishes,

Everyone has those weeks when they don't feel so good. Migraines have moved in on my block, and I'm trying to endure their presence. But I decided to make the best of a tough week by watching the cooking show "Fusion Grain Cooking" with Chef Brad and learning all his great tips on making wheat bread.

What a great teacher! I never grew up baking bread, so his ideas are so amazing. I've watched cooking shows before, but learning how to use wheat and other grains is so wonderful. Especially for those of us trying to incorporate food storage grains into our diet.

If you have not seen his show, you can watch it online. I especially enjoyed watching the "Wheat" episode where he shows us how to make bread. Love the tips! He makes it all possible. Check out his other episodes on Chef Brad's Fusion Grain Cooking on BYUtv.

May is a busy month for many families because of Mother's day, end-of-the-year school projects, performances, and graduations. So I like to simplify this month's food storage focus to condiments and spices. Some of the best deals for condiments happen in May.

Here is the list of items I like to stock up on in May and some preparedness goal as well:

May 2013
Food Storage Shopping List.pdf

As the weather warms up, more and more people cook outdoors. There will be plenty of store coupons and sales for condiments. However, let me caution you not to go overboard when buying condiments. You will be tempted to stock up on more than you need, so be practical. I like to stock up on a year's supply, but how many bottles of ketchup do you really need? Take a look at my suggested amounts for a 3-month supply, which I feel is more realistic. If you multiply the amounts by 4 and then muliply that number by the number of family members, you will be able to decide what is best for you.

Also, stock up on spices and dry onions. Go here to see how I store my spices. I like buying a 2.4 lb. #10 can of dry onions from the LDS Home Storage Center for $6.90 because it's a great bargain and lasts longer than a year for our family. After I open the container, I keep it in my cool basement, and transfer a small amount in a shaker container for kitchen use. You would pay $11.20 for an equivalent amount at Sam's Club. Many of us use fresh onions more often than dry in the summer which is fine. But dry onions are very useful as well.

In regards to other spices, I buy less-used spices in bulk at Winco and put them in my own jars. Don't go overboard here either and feel you have to buy those large containers at Costco or Sam's Club. That is not necessarily the best price. Consider what you use a lot of. In our family it's cinnamon, oregano and onions. I don't need a 15 oz. container of thyme. Be practical so you can spend money on something else you need this month.

I like to keep a stock of paper goods on hand all the time for power outages or longer disasters. Paper plates, cups, foil, plastic utensils, etc. are extremely useful when you can't use your dishwasher or sink. Watch for sales closer to Memorial day, and stock up. I like to keep a 30 day supply always in a cupboard. With our large family gatherings, they always get used and I just replace them.

Even though I don't focus on freezer foods for food storage, you may find good deals on meat this month. My butcher told me roasts go on sale in May because people are barbecuing other cuts of meat. May is also National Pet Month so put together a 72-hour kit for Fido or Fluffy this time each year. You may want to read "The Dogs of Hurricane Katrina" to motivate you.

If you plan to use a dutch oven for outdoor emergency cooking, charcoal briquettes go on sale this month too. And the price of bottled water drops as we get closer to Memorial day.

Hopefully you've started an area for your vegetable garden. I'm not a great gardener, but I like to plant a "salad" garden every year.

Last of all, if you get a nice tax refund, consider buying a wheat grinder. It's a worthwhile investment if you like to use whole grains. In 2009, my readers said their favorite grinders were the NutriMill and the Wonder Mill.

It's nice to hear the lawnmowers buzzing in our neighborhood again. It's a great time of year. Good luck on your continual progress to becoming better prepared. You can do it!

Best wishes,
The funny thing is, we are different. But some of our differences are more apparent than others, especially when we have a physical disability like Autism. The following Mormon Messages video shows that through a little sister's eyes, her brother is "just my brother."

As soon as I started this video, my daughter ran in from the other room, drawn to the voice of the little girl. I enjoyed talking with her about Autism as she had many questions about Hyrum. What can he do? Can he talk?

For week 17, gather prepared soup as well as other suggested items.

STEP 1: 3-MONTH SUPPLY (per adult) - Prepared Soup 3 cans.
Tip: A few cans of prepared soup can be helpful everyday, for sudden illness or disasters. For singles and empty-nesters, the convenience of a can of soup can't be overlooked. Consider adding a few of your family favorites to your 3-month supply.
Shelf Life: Typically 2 - 5 years, unless tomato-based. Check the label.

STEP 2: DRINKING WATER - 14 gallons water
FEMA recommends 1 gallon per day of drinking water per person. That's about 4x24 ct. cases of bottled water per person. "You will also need water for food preparation, bathing, brushing teeth, and dish washing. Store a 3-5 day supply of water (at least 5 gallons for each person)." FEMA
Tip: Stock up this month! It's everywhere today, but it may not be tomorrow. Buy more to replenish what you use.

STEP 4: LONGER-TERM SUPPLY (per adult) - Nothing this week

OTHER STORAGE ITEMS
SANITATION ITEMS - Toilet bowl cleaner
Tip: Whether you use a liquid or Comet-type product, buying a few extra is helpful everday. Sometimes these items are less expensive when purchased in bulk at a warehouse store.

PREPAREDNESS GOAL - Update your 72-hour kit food
Tip: Does your kit need a checkup? Has it really been a year since you looked at the food in you kit? We keep our kits in our coat closet for quick access. You can find more ideas on my Pinterest 72-Hour Kit page or at this post about food packs.

EQUIPMENT GOAL - Portable Toilet
Tip: Trash bags could line a toilet in a disaster. Or you could purchase a portable toilet like the Go Anywhere by CleanWaste, or make one of your own with a seat and bucket.

WEEKLY INVENTORY - Freezer
How: We just discovered some hot dogs that had been in our freezer for over a year. Though freezer foods are perishible, it's still a great idea to take an inventory every few months. I like to store my yeast in my freezer so it will last longer. Check out my Pinterest Freezer & Refrigerator page for more ideas.

Good luck on your weekly goals. You CAN do it! Here is the printout of the April 2013 Food Storage List.

In honor of the Great Utah ShakeOut, yesterday I had an earthquake drill with my preschool class. I wanted to make this experience fun yet serious, but at the same time not scare them.

Over the past few months I have taught them a song called "Five Little Mice" from "150 Toddler Tunes" by Kidzup. During this song they pretend they are mice and take turns running away from the cat by hinding under the preschool table. They love playing this game.

However, during an earthquake they would all need to get under the table at the same time. The thought came to me to have them pretend to be playing with something in the classroom before I said, "1, 2, 3 earthquake!"

So, I assigned each of them something to do such as, "Joey, pretend to read a book; Sally, play with puzzles; Mary, sit at the table; Gina, play with the ball" etc. (Fictitious names). They loved this because they are great pretenders.

Once we were ready, I told them to start pretending. Then I shook back and forth in my rocking chair and said, "1, 2, 3 earthquake!" They dropped whatever they were doing or holding, and scrambled under the table. They loved it! Each time we did a drill, they pretended to do something else in the classroom.

The first time we did it, I tried to get under the table with them, but could only get my shoulders under. So, I decided my protection location would be the doorway to the bathroom a few feet from the kids. We practiced over and over again. And I am very proud of my students!

We also talked about the importance of listening and obeying quickly. It's always a challenge for teachers to get everyone on task quickly. They have to learn to freeze. However, we are working on it.

I also taught them how to evacuate in case of a fire. They practiced grabbing their coats and shoes (without putting them on), and getting out the door. I taught them how to open the door by themselves in case I am unable to do it because of an injury. Practicing at a young age is very important, and need not be scary.

I hope some of you are teaching your children how to be better prepared for earthquakes. This would be a great family home evening idea too!

Are you prepared for a 7.0 earthquake in Utah? Participate in the Great Utah ShakeOut on Wednesday, April 17th at 10:15 a.m. wherever you are. Sign up here.

The following video shows "what might happen in a Wasatch fault earthquake, and what Utahns can do to reduce losses."

What will happen on April 17?

The ShakeOut Drill is scheduled for 10:15 AM on April 17, 2012.

This means that wherever you are at that moment—at home, at work, at school, anywhere—you should Drop, Cover, and Hold On as if there were a major earthquake occurring at that very moment, and stay in this position for at least 60 seconds.

There will not be any freeway closures, power outages, or other simulated effects of the hypothetical earthquake, unless your local government or utility company specifically notifies you about something of this nature.

The ShakeOut is not something you need to leave work to participate in—in fact, participating at work is encouraged! Businesses, organizations, schools, and government agencies can register and have their employees practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On or have a more extensive emergency drill.

The main goal of the ShakeOut is to get Utahns prepared for major earthquakes, so use the ShakeOut as an opportunity to learn what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. Visit http://www.earthquakecountry.info/roots/seven_steps.html for tips on how to prepare, survive, and recover.

Anyone in Utah can participate, from a single individual at their home to a major company at the office. Talk to your coworkers, neighbors and friends about the ShakeOut and encourage their participation.

Sign up for free at www.ShakeOut.org/Utah/register to be counted in the ShakeOut Drill, get email updates, and more.

For week 16, gather condensed soup as well as other suggested items.

STEP 1: 3-MONTH SUPPLY (per adult) - Condensed Soups 10 cans.
Tip: Condensed soups have been around for generations. They are useful in casseroles, crockpot meals and many other recipes. Consider varieties such as tomato soup, chicken noodle, cream of mushroom or chicken. Check out CampellsSoup.com for some you didn't even know existed. A few varieties are usually available during the case lot sales in Utah. Also find some at Sam's Club and Costco year-round, though they are a bit more expensive. Check your grocery ad for a good price and stock up on your favorites. If this is a staple for your family, you may want to stock up on more. Personally, I gather several cases twice a year.
Shelf Life: Cream of mushroom or chicken 2 - 5 years; tomato soup - 12 - 18 months.

STEP 4: LONGER-TERM SUPPLY (per adult) - Nothing this week

OTHER STORAGE ITEMS
SANITATION ITEMS - Disinfectant Cleaning Wipes
Tip: These are definitely a convenience, but if you were without water, these would be useful for quick sanitation cleanups. These are also great for camping, everyday use and during disasters.

PREPAREDNESS GOAL - Family Home Evening Lesson on Emergency Sanitation and Hygiene
Tip: Does your family know how to handle sanitation issues in a disaster? Consider preparing a lesson to teach your family. Check out "Personal Hygiene and Handwashing After a Disaster or Emergency" at this CDC link. The Handwashing Station pdf is a great visual. Review what to do after a flood as well.

EQUIPMENT GOAL - Trash Bags
Tip: Trash bags are extremely useful after a disaster. If trash service were suddenly interrupted, you will be grateful you had some large bags on hand. Animals and rodents will be looking for food, so make sure you have covered trash cans as well.

WEEKLY INVENTORY - Cleaning Supplies
How: Check your cleaning supplies such as bleach, disinfectant cleanner, laundry soap, ammonia, etc. for breakage, and replenish if needed.

Good luck on your weekly goals. You CAN do it! Here is the printout of the April 2013 Food Storage List. If you are new around here, go to my START HERE page.

I have met a variety of people from various economic circumstances who are trying to help their families become better prepared.

There is much we can learn from each other and so much strength in the people in these wards and stakes. When I come to teach, I usually feel somewhat inadequate knowing each ward has many capable teachers and leaders. However, when those fear thoughts enter my mind, I quickly push them aside because I have faith that Heavenly Father knows my gifts and that there is usually someone in my class that I can lift. Someone who needs to know they are not alone, and yes, they can get through their trial.

It is because of this faith, that I find the courage to teach. We did not come to this earth empty handed. It is sometimes difficult to see our own gifts, but I know we each have them and can use them to help others.

Today I thought I would share a Mormon Messages video entitled "Courage." As we push forward each day, may we each discover our gifts and have the courage to use them.
When the age to serve was lowered, many more youth have chosen to serve missions in unprecedented numbers. This report shares stories of several youth and the feelings they have about choosing to serve missions for the LDS Church. Their enthusiasm is contagious. As Elder Russell M. For week 15, gather some tuna and salmon.

STEP 1: 3-MONTH SUPPLY (per adult) - Tuna or Salmon 6 cans.
Tip: Canned tuna or salmon is a great source of Omega 3 and protein. Canned fish can be used in sandwiches, salads and casseroles. Tuna is .50 cents per can and albacore tuna is $1.50 during the April case lot sales in Utah. They are always at Sam's Club and Costco or check your grocery ad for a good price to stock up on your favorite brand. If this is a staple for your family, you may want to stock up on more.
Shelf Life: About 3 - 5 years.

STEP 2: DRINKING WATER - 14 gallons water
(FEMA) or about 4x24 ct. cases of bottled water per person
Tip: Stock up this month! It's everywhere today, but it may not be tomorrow. Buy more to replenish what you use. Small bottles are for short-term storage, so slowly go through your supply and replenish. More durable containers are for long-term storage, but need to be refilled every 6 months.
Shelf Life: small commercially prepared bottles store indefinitely, see Still Tasty. Store off your cement floor on 2x4's or a shelf.

STEP 3: FINANCIAL RESERVE (per person) - $2.00 +/- per week
Tip: Add to your fund each week for emergencies. Keep some in the bank and some cash in small bills at home.

STEP 4: LONGER-TERM SUPPLY (per adult) - Nothing this week

OTHER STORAGE ITEMS
SANITATION ITEMS - Baby wipes
Tip: Even if you don't have a baby, these wipes are great for cleansing when you are without running water. I buy a few packs and keep with the emergency supplies. Great for camping, everyday and during disasters.

PREPAREDNESS GOAL - Plant a vegetable garden
Tip: This is by far the best preparedness thing you can do to keep food costs down. Even if you live in an apartment, you can have a tomato plant on your porch. With practice, you could become the porch expert! Check out some ideas on my Pinterest Vegetable Gardens page. And I love reading about gardening at The Prudent Homemaker.

EQUIPMENT GOAL - Solar Shower
Tip: If you were without running water, a solar shower is a great sanitation gadget. Sure you could create something of your own, but for less than ten dollars you could have something to hang in a tree and let the sun heat. We picked up ours from Walmart. May I never have to use it.

WEEKLY INVENTORY - Beverages
How: Check your beverages for breakage, spillage and replenish if needed. Items such as shelf stable juice, soda, sports drinks, powdered drink mixes, lunch box drinks, or other canned beverages can be considered food storage.

Good luck on your weekly goals. You CAN do it! Here is the printout of the April 2013 Food Storage List. If you are new around here, go to my START HERE page.
For week 14, gather some canned beans and chili.

STEP 1: 3-MONTH SUPPLY (per adult) - Canned beans AND chili 14 cans.
Tip: The lovely thing about prepared canned beans is the health benefits and how easy they are to use. Canned beans can usually be found year-round and come with or without salt. Canned beans (not chili) should be rinsed and swished in cold water to help get rid of the gas-causing raffinose sugars. Beans are typically on sale during the April case lot sales in Utah for .50 cents per can. Or check your grocery ad for a good price to stock up on.
Shelf Life: About 2 - 5 years.

Store off your cement floor.

SANITATION ITEMS - Disinfectant cleaner
Tip: Keep this concentrated cleaner on your shelf. It's an inexpensive cleaner every day and during disasters.

PREPAREDNESS GOAL - Collect bean recipes
Tip: There are so many options for recipes using beans from hummus to homemade chili. Search online or in your own recipe books for some family favorites. Keep them in your binder for easy access.

EQUIPMENT GOAL - Rubber gloves
Tip: Helpful for cleaning to protect your hands from chemicals or other unwanted germs.

WEEKLY INVENTORY - Fuel and Light
How: Look through your supply of fuel and light and count them. Consider propane, camp stove fuel, lawnmower gas containers, light bulbs, lanterns, running headlamps, batteries or other similar items. Learn to keep similar items grouped together to make them easier to inventory. We needed our headlamps last weekend for a trip and could not find them. Now new ones are in the emergency closet as well as our batteries and lanterns.

Good luck on your weekly goals. You CAN do it! Here is the printout of the April 2013 Food Storage List. (Updated 4/6/13) Sometimes it's difficult for children to enjoy watching the LDS General Conference twice a year on television. But if you prepare in advance and make this event an important tradition in your family, kids will look forward to it each year.

I taught a Relief Society class in my ward about helping children enjoy general conference. The moms and grandmas put together an activity notebook for children ages 6 - 11, so I am sharing my ideas. The cool thing about this notebook, is once you have your binder made, you can remove and add new pages every 6 months.

There are so many great ideas online, so my notebook has a-bit-of-this and a-bit-of-that. It's easy to customize. Look through the links, then print what you need for your own child.

More ideas can be found on my Pinterest General Conference for Kids board. And there are new April 2013 Notebooks at SugarDoodle for various ages. FOR PARENTS SECTION
"Helps for Parents" printable handout from my class (see below). Keep this in the binder so you can refer to it again. Or add any other handouts you find helpful. A few weeks before conference, come back to this page and print something new for your child.

Helps for Parents “It is when children are young that parents must be innovative in helping them develop good habits regarding conference participation. As our children are given opportunities to observe and learn the role of these special witnesses, they will receive a spiritual confirmation of the sacred calling of their Church leaders, and they will feel a deeper love for and interest in these leaders and their message.” Elder Neil L. Andersen

Before Conference • Make general conference a priority by mark it on your family calendars.
• During family prayer, pray for the speakers several weeks before conference.
• If possible, devote the entire weekend to your family and conference. Take time off work.
• Complete homework, chores and shopping by Friday night.
• Prepare food menus to make food preparation easier.
• Serve a traditional family favorite breakfast or lunch.
• Prepare conference treats in baggies such as yogurt covered raisins, granola, cereal, etc.
• The week before conference, spend a little time every day talking to your children about how exciting it will be to get to hear the prophet talk to us.
• Have a special family home evening lesson about “Following the Prophet.”

Room Set up • If the goal is to keep everyone in the same room for one or all sessions of general conference, then take some time to set up the room.
• Make sure everyone has a comfortable place to sit. Small children will need floor space to play.
• Bring in a tote with a variety of favorite toys for young children.
• Kids who can’t sit still for long could do an activity at a small table in the same room like play dough or Legos. Or use a kitchen table adjacent to the room where the T.V. will be on.
• One family set their room up to look like a tent imagining they lived in the days of King Benjamin.
• Put a bowl of fruit on the sofa table and some drinks.
• Have notebooks and pencils ready. Older children can take notes in a special spiral notebook purchased just for conference.
• Fill small buckets or bowls with candy or snack on your fireplace mantle. As children hear words on the containers, such as “temple,” “family prayer,” etc., let them enjoy a small treat.

During Conference • Tell children to remember the stories by drawing a picture or writing words or a sentence about what they hear. Be an example by taking notes yourself.
• Reverence is a worthy goal, but not always realistic with young children in the room. Quiet voices may be the best you can get.

Between Sessions • Spend time between conference sessions showing old family movies, playing games, or taking a walk.
• Play general conference bingo. (See http://www.lds.org/general-conference/children?lang=eng)
• Have a family picnic indoors or outdoors
• On Saturday, go out for frozen yogurt
• Or while Dad is at the priesthood session on Saturday, start a tradition by taking kids for ice cream, or going to the park.

After Conference • During family home evening the week after conference, let family members share stories, pictures or messages they learned from their notebooks.

Family Recipes List a few family recipes you may want to become a tradition during general conference weekend. Breakfast Ideas
Lunch Ideas
Snack Ideas

This list helps me compare the prices at this week's Utah case lot sales to items I can get everyday at Sam's Club, Walmart, the LDS Home Storage Centers (dry pack cannery) and Emergency Essentials.

At the beginning of the list are some how-to tips for shopping at case lot sales. Make sure you compare ounce for ounce or pound for pound which are shown in the gray column. And typically, items in #10 cans have a longer shelf life so they cost more per ounce or pound.

I didn't have time to update the Walmart prices, so my list has last year's prices. But I've found that most of these Walmart items don't go up in price much unless there is an extreme drought or shortage. Nor did I get to Costco. :-( Sick kids. However, Sam's Club prices are very similar. For those of you who have a Utah Albertson's nearby, just look here for those prices and then compare with my list.

Take a look at the price list if you live in Utah, because it may help you figure out what to buy before you even enter the store. You will save the most money if you go shopping with a plan of action. I hope you find it useful and get some great shopping deals! I will post some pictures after I shop. :-)

Update: Just got back from Smith's and the picture above has the items I bought there. I would love to tell you my family ate regular oatmeal for breakfast, but my kids prefer instant. So, I stocked up. Smith's does not let you break the case which is too bad because they would probably sell more food if they did. But who am I to tell them how to market their food. :-)

I would LOVE to hear what some of you purchase at the case lot sales! Please share.

Spring always brings with it a fresh start. So if you feel behind, no worries. Make April a month to get refocused on preparedness.

During this month, our food storage focus is beans, fish and soups. We will also focus on sanitation and hygiene. And our spiritual focus is Be Clean as in becoming spiritually clean through repentance. Stock up on spiritual preparedness by attending or viewing the LDS General Conference this weekend.

For my printable monthly list, click below.

April 2013 Food Storage List

In our short-term supply of everyday foods, we will be stocking up on prepared canned beans. There is such a variety to choose from: kidney, refried, garbanzo, and black beans. Whatever you love is what you will store. The possibilities are endless! Beans for salads, beans for soups, beans for chili. Beans, beans and more beans. I love our Utah case lot sales which started this week because you can find these items on sale for about 50 cents a can. And most stores like Macey's or Dick's let you mix and match the cans so you are not stuck with a whole case of one type. Even if you see cases in the front of the store, head to the regular bean aisle to see individual cans on sale. Smith's (Kroger) usually does not break the case, but some of you may need a whole case of one type.

We will also gather canned fish. This could be tuna or salmon in cans, or in pouches. A great source of Omega 3 and protein. It usually has a 3 - 5 year shelf life, but check your product to be sure. Fish mixed with other items like mayonnaise has a much shorter shelf life. Tuna is usually about 60 cents a can during the Utah case lot sales. However, you can always find it at other stores as well. Costco and Sam's Club both carry tuna and salmon. It is best stored in a cool (75 degrees or less), dry place. Not in your garage.

The other item to gather is soup. There are so many options here as well. Check your favorite recipes to see what kinds of soups you regularly use. Creamed soups, tomato soup or prepared soups are fine. Whatever works for your family. Condensed soups are about 50 cents at the case lot sales.

In our short and long-term supply of foods, we will gather dry beans or lentils. If properly stored with an oxygen absorber packet in #10 cans or Mylar bags, these may be kept for 30 years. However, learn how to prepare them. I have a weakness here, because I'm not good with dry beans. But some of you are over-the-top with dry bean knowledge. There are some great resources on cooking with dry beans and I have a list of recipes here. During the case lot sale, you can find 20 lb. bags of black beans for $18.00 and pinto beans for $16.00, but you can always get a 25 lb. bag of black or white beans at the LDS Home Storage Center for about $16.00. And a 25 lb. bag of pinto beans is $18.55.

Okay. No one likes to talk about emergency sanitation and hygiene, but it is so important. Our bodies have to do their thing, and we have to learn how to deal with it if there is an emergency. Those of you with little children will want to have a good supply of baby wipes and diapers always around. We also need to have cleaning items on hand that will help us with our food sanitation safety as well. This month we need to do some studying, and then teach our families and friends.

Good luck with your preparedness goals! You are never behind. Any step forward is still a step forward. Let me know what you think of this month's goals.

“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord:

though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;

though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

My friend, Mable, makes the most scrumptious sugar cookies! Our young women at church love them. I'm not the best cook, but she makes me look good, so I made them for my family for Valentine's day. This is also a great recipe for Easter cookies. I use store bought frosting. This recipe is a keeper. They are tender, not crisp. Also, the printable Valentine's in the photo can be found here. And there is a cute Valentine garland here.

Update: We made these for Easter. Still the best recipe ever!

Mable's Sugar Cookies
printable copy

3 eggs

2 1/2 c. sugar

1 c. sour cream

1 T. vanilla

1/2 c. butter flavored Crisco

6 1/2 c. flour

1 T. baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix wet ingredients in mixer. Sift dry ingredients. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix until dough is easy to handle. Roll dough 1/4 inch thick and cut out on floured counter. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 - 9 minutes. (I baked them for 11 minutes.)

Cream Cheese Frosting

1 T. butter

2 T. cream cheese

1 t. almond or coconut flavoring extract

3+ c. powdered sugar

1 or 2 T. milk

Soften butter and cream cheese in microwave. Add extract of choice. Stir in powdered sugar. Add milk slowly while stirring until cream.
This past April our family updated our 72-hour kit food pack supplies. Because I've written before about the importance of having the right amount of calories for each person, as I went shopping for food items I knew I wanted to do this again. But this time I made sure the shelf life of most items would be at least a year so we would not have to change so often.

My old post had some items that did NOT last a year, and I don't recommend you do that. Foods like Pop Tarts or crackers DO NOT last very long. But about a 1 year shelf life is a good idea because most of us update our supplies every 2 or 3 years.☺ We are not an MRE family yet, so it took me some time to figure out what would work. However, there are some great MRE bars out there with a longer shelf life.

I like to shop at Sam's Club for my items, because I get it done in one place. Costco or another warehouse store would work just fine. Buying in bulk saves you money when you are shopping for a large family. However, you could probably do something similar at another store if you have a smaller family.

Step 6 - Food
Here are a few suggestions I think will help many of you with the food for your 72-hour kits.

Make sure the food items are things your family will and can eat. Sometimes the food in a purchased kit will not work for your daughter's nut allergy or a son's intolerance to lactose. I prefer to customize the food for each of my children.

Choose items that will have a shelf life of at least 1 year. Actually, one of my items has a 6 month shelf life, but we decided we would eat it even if it was hard; Nature Valley Oats 'N Honey bar. This isn't always easy when you have infants. However, your larger diaper bag could contain 72 hours or more of the current food your baby eats. If I had a baby I would grab this bag if I had to evacuate.

Try to find items that are small, but have the highest calories. Stressful situations burn more calories. For one adult I tried to get up to 2000 calories. Also make sure you have some type of comfort food or candy.

It is difficult for one person to carry 3 gallons of water in a backpack. So you will have to put less than the amount you would store if you had to shelter at home. I put some bottled water in the backpacks, but also store three cases of 24 ct. bottled water on the shelf near the 72-hour kits. If we had to evacuate by car, we could easily grab the cases too.

Consider the strong odors of the foods you are storing. Even though it is high in protein, beef jerky can make everything smell horrible. If you choose to store it, change it often and double or triple wrap it. Even minty gum can make everything smell/taste minty.

Watch out for items that can go rancid. If some of your foods have nuts, make sure you store them in a cool, dry location such as under your bed or a house closet. The garage is not a great location because of the varying temperatures. Ask your local grocer if he would store his food there.

Ours items are divided into gallon-sized Ziploc bags and labeled with the date we put them together. I made some labels with a different scripture quote for each day. I printed them on full sheet labels and cut apart. We put the same items in each bag for each day. Your items may be totally different, but this list will get you thinking.

The printables below the list have the calorie count. Let me know if my math is wrong or if you can't print. Don't forget to send your college kids a kit as well.

Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3
2 Nature Valley Oats 'N Honey bar (6M)
4 Clif Energy bar (12M)
1 PowerBar Protein Plus bar (12M)
1 Kar's Sweet & Salty (2Y)
6 Arrowhead water bottle 16.9 oz (2Y+)
1 Betty Crocker Fruit roll up (12M?)
Crystal Light on the Go (2Y)
1 Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa packet (2Y)
2 Candy Skittles, Starburst Fun size (18M)
Extra gum 15 pc pack (10M)
It's time for me to get caught up. Sorry I'm a bit behind on posting the weekly food storage items, but my family has needed me. For week 13, gather some canned pasta & ramen noodles.

STEP 1: 3-MONTH SUPPLY (per adult) - Canned pasta 8 cans. AND ramen noodles 12 pkgs.
Why?: In many families with children, canned pasta like spagettios, raviolis or ramen soup noodles are a staple. If you are one of those families, then this week gather some of these items for your food storage. Consider what your child would prefer eating if a disaster happens: a can of whole dry wheat or Spagettios. The choice is yours.
Tip: These items are typically on sale during the April case lot sales in Utah. Or check your grocery ad for a good price to stock up on.
Shelf Life: Check the package of the item for the shelf life.

Store off your cement floor.

FIRST AID GOAL - Thermometer
Tip: Purchase a medical thermometer for your family. Or if you already have one, replace the batteries.

PREPAREDNESS GOAL - CPR or First Aid Class
Tip: Consider taking a class that may save someone's life. If you can't take it this month, sign up for one this summer. Invite your teen children to take it with you.

EQUIPMENT GOAL - Ace bandages
Tip: These are always useful for sprains or other injuries. They can be washed if you put them in a lingerie bag.

WEEKLY INVENTORY - Emergency Kits
How: Go through your 72-Hour kits and write down some goals of what you need to resupply. We like to restock every spring near General Conference time.

Good luck on your weekly goals. You CAN do it! Here is the printout of the March 2013 Food Storage List.

Do you have any tips on gathering the items on this list?

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BEGINNERS:
If you are new around here, check out my START HERE page. Each week, I post various food storage and emergency items to gather. By stocking up year round, you build up your supplies economically, use some, leave some on the shelf, and buy some more. Cycling keeps your items fresh and integrated into your everyday diet. I've incorporated the LDS 4-Step Approach to Home Storage, but with my suggested items to gather.

Work on STEP 1, 2 and 3, before moving to STEP 4: Long-Term Food Supply. It may take you awhile to gather your 3-Month Supply, water and a financial reserve. As long as you are moving forward, that's what matters most. Only gather what you can afford, will eat, and choose goals you have time for. Substitute other foods that work for your family.

Your food storage should consist of shelf-stable foods. What we store in our 3-month supply (STEP 1) is everyday foods or short-term storage foods which have an approximate range of 3 month - 10 year shelf-life. What we store in our long-term supply are foods that have a 20 to 30 year shelf life. Don't consider what's in your refrigerator or freezer as this type of storage, because it could be gone quickly with a 24-hour power outage. However, we all buy perishable foods and can continue to purchase them and inventory them. Hope that all made sense.
