Pop quiz: Name a show Garret Dillahunt won’t be on this season. Burn Notice, you say? Wrong!

The former Sarah Connor Chronicles killing machine, who in the past month has completed guest stints on CSI, Lie to Me, and Law & Order: SVU, is en route to Miami to shoot a role on the USA smash, sources confirm to me exclusively.

Dillahunt will play Simon, a scary-smart new client of Michael’s (Jeffrey Donovan) — and perhaps the first person to outsmart him. The episode — which will air this winter when the show returns to finish out its third season — also features the return of Frasier’s John Mahoney as Management.

I’m thinking Dillahunt’s agent deserves a raise.

Here are the highlights. I had the distinct honor of sitting in on a conference call with Bruce Campbell and Sharon Gless of 'Burn Notice'. I had the even more distinct honor of asking them a question. How great are those two actors? It was quite telling; any 'Burn Notice' fan I told that I was participating in in this phone call, their eyes would sort of sparkle with inquisitive hope as they asked "Who from the show?" The payoff they were all looking for was Bruce Campbell. How can you not love that guy? And Sharon Gless is a powerhouse, I just adore her. Anyway, enough gushing. Or at least just straight gushing.

The phone call was really interesting. I enjoy listening to actors talk about their characters. Funnily enough though, I can't stand 'Inside the Actors Studio'. Perhaps that's because to the degree that I enjoy listening to actors, I hate listening to James Lipton open his mouth. I digress. There wasn't a ton of probing about the future of the show in the questions asked but both actors also repeatedly stated that neither one knows anything about the future of their character, or frankly of the plot, and that neither one wants to know. Bruce shared that he likes "to sit back, just like the audience, and let it happen. I get excited reading the next script, because I don’t really know what they have planned... The season finale, I couldn’t tell you sitting here right now what’s going to happen. Not because I’m lying or that I’m not supposed to, I don’t know because I haven’t asked, I don’t want to know." I can get down with that. I can also get down with some spoilers though, come on guys, you're killing me.

Although most of the conversation centered around ruminations on their characters , they did let slip a few speculations, potential future plans and a mild spoiler or two. Let me see if I can distill out some of the good stuff for you.

The perpetual question on everyone's mind is "Will Michael get to the bottom of his burn notice and get back in the spy game" or some variation there of. While neither Bruce nor Sharon could answer this question, not surprisingly, they recognized the profound effect that development would have on their characters. Their stance is divided, as one would expect from such complex characters, and is a healthy mix of skepticism and understanding. Bruce feels Sam would be the most understanding out of Michael's companions, having the patriotism that Fiona lacks and the experience of liking "doing what he did for the sake of his country." That said, Sam may be less convinced a return to the game is worth it, given all Michael has been put through, and he certainly is often at odds with Mike over the precarious situations he gets into. Bruce teased that "in the episode we’re shooting right now that comes to a head where Sam refuses to help him because he’s doing stuff that is too questionable. So Michael’s going to get in pretty deep. We’ll see how deep he gets in. And if he winds up going back in, I think Sam would miss him because I think Sam has enjoyed getting back to work instead of just drinking and hanging out with rich Miami women. I think he’s enjoyed tailing people and pulling up some of the old skills again. It kind of gets the cobwebs out, gives him a reason to get out of bed." Is it creepy for me to state here that I'll give Bruce Campbell a reason to get out of bed? Erm, moving on.

How would Madeline respond to losing her prodigal son again? Would she be right back where she started or does she have new insights that would help her accept another disappearance? A little from column A, a little from column B. Although Sharon feels that Madeline still doesn't understand the "full impact" of what her son does, she is slowly figuring it out and becoming more informed. Although, "there are moments where she does trust him... I think there’s always a bit of doubt because he’s never completely forthcoming. So what she finds out she sort of finds out on her own. He’s a little vague when he explains things, enough to calm her down or to get her to help in an indirect way." And, as Bruce points out "I... really get the sense that Maddie knows more than she’s letting on, like most mothers." So will her increased awareness of who Michael is and what he does provide comfort or increase concern should he vanish once again behind the curtain of covert ops? That depends on whether or not Michael maintains radio silence. "(I)f Michael went away again like he did before, and didn’t contact me like he did before, I think Madeline would have more reason to be concerned because I think she knows now."

But just how much does she know? There are various theories floating around that Maddie may herself be a covert operative. If that is true, she certainly knows how to work a cover ID. It also is most certainly something that Bruce and Sharon don't seem to have any inclination of. That's not to say that Mama Weston will be sitting on the sidelines either. She may or may not be a spy but, as creator Matt Nix told Sharon, “Remember, (Michael) gets his smarts from her.” And Maddie has tried her hand assisting in a few jobs- playing lookout during a stakeout and even taking a crack at interrogating- which she turned out to be pretty good at. She certainly has had plenty of practice trying to extract information from her tight-lipped son. Both actors hinted that we may see more participation from Madeline in the future with Bruce going so far as to suggest to Sharon "don’t kid yourself. You’re going to be an operative before too long maybe." Her response? "Okay, look out." Oh, I will.

The actors also mused on future relationship developments, particularly the budding one between their two characters. Although we can be fairly confident that there won't be any romantic developments between the two "because it would be too creepy sleeping with Michael’s mother. You know, it’s too inbred", they do see a lot of room for the relationship to grow and evolve. Sharon "see(s) that it can get rougher, it can get more tender, and I think there’s a myriad of things that can come out of a relationship with two people who do respect each other and who both love this one man, this boy, my boy and his friend." Even though they are not currently roomies, both see the potential for that living situation to happen again and hopefully if it does Matt Nix will follow through on a promise he made to the actors. "He promised us season two, he promised that we would get drunk together."

Speaking of which, will the show ever introduce to us a cocktail that Sam hasn't met and liked? Bruce gave that one a definitive no . "I think Sam has been making them up, he knows so many of them." That said there may be some new faces, or old faces, we will get to see in the future. Both stars would love to see Sharon's old partner Tyne Daly return (she makes her first appearance on tonight's episode). Sharon shares "She wants to come back as a bad guy. Like Judy Dench on the James Bond things. Not a bad guy, but she would be running the whole thing." An "evil temptress". Bruce Campbell shares his costar's loyalty. "We had Lucy Lawless a couple years ago, which was a lot of fun for my old Xena pal. One of these days I’d love to get Kevin Sorbo, my Hercules buddy, to be a bad guy." As he points out, the nice thing about a show that gets great ratings is that quality actors want to work on it. Well, if they keep up their track record of Battlestar Galactica alums and legendary character actors I will certainly continue to help with those ratings.

Although the Q & A didn't provide a plethora of juicy tidbits and future plot points, it did provide the opportunity for two Hollywood legends to talk about their craft and it reinforced once again what makes this show so great: quality actors who are committed to their characters and just as invested and enthusiastic as the most die hard fan. Really, aside from more spoilers(!), what more can you ask for?

The summer's hottest cable series will be back.

Sources said that USA Network has renewed its flagship action drama "Burn Notice" and breakout freshman hit "Royal Pains."

The pickups come amid another sizzling summer for the basic cable network, which is wrapping up July as cable's most-watched network after finishing first during the second-quarter ratings race.

The Thursday combo of "Burn" and "Pains" has been the main driver of USA's ratings surge, with all fresh episodes of the series landing in the top 20 programs on ad-supported cable for the month.

On July 9, the original runs of the Fox TV Studios-produced "Burn" and Universal Cable Prods.' "Pains" drew 7.1 million and 7.3 million viewers, respectively.

"Burn," starring Jeffrey Donovan, is being picked up for a fourth season. The show it helped launch, the Mark Feuerstein-starring medical soap "Pains," is being renewed for a second turn.

"You created a show with a main named Michael Westen [played by Jeffery Donovan] not really realizing that that guy you liked from that episode of Six Feet Under is named Michael Weston [yes, with an O, and he played Jake on Six Feet Under in case you were wondering]. And then everyone goes, 'Did you know there's a Michael Weston?' So you start looking for an opportunity to cast Michael Weston. And you know, he's a great actor." Scheming sociopath Gilroy demands all local flight data for the next six weeks, a request that gives both Michael and Sam the heebie-jeebies, and scheming sociopath Number Two Larry Garber has casually dumped a dead body in Michael's apartment and expects Michael to help him clean up the mess...

[CARLOS] Male, 30s to early 40s, Hispanic, this volatile professional criminal runs a cash processing center for a Colombian drug cartel, and is understandably furious when $3 million of his money disappears, and four of his men are killed, all courtesy of Larry Garber. Wrongly convinced that Michael is to blame, Carlos is more than ready to kill him on sight, and has put out a contract on both Michael and his (only partially framed) sidekick, magician Jack Fleetwood. In a state of rage, Carlos is taken in hand by Michael, who smoothly and steadily convinces him that one of his own hit men ripped him off. Determined to get revenge himself, Carlos shoots the traitorous rat dead, and never finds out that the man he "killed" has been dead and on ice for a couple days already...GUEST STAR

[JACK YABLONSKI AKA JACK FLEETWOOD] Male, Caucasian, mid 30s. A professional magician, his real name is Jack Yablonski, but his stage name is Jack Fleetwood. Jack has made the fairly spectacular error of acting as the front man for scheming sociopath Larry Garber, and now he's been targeted for death by a local Colombian cartel that's famously efficient at killing people. Michael's new client (kinda-sorta), Jack is not too bright and not too gifted at magic, but when someone like Michael tells him to "run" and "duck," he follows orders -- especially when his tattered life is at stake. In the end, Jack disappears from the cartel's hit list, but Jack himself has to disappear from Florida -- for the rest of his life...GUEST STAR

Burn Notice - Jeffrey Donovan arrested for DUI

Burn Notice star Jeffrey Donovan was arrested for driving under the influence in Miami Beach after almost hitting a stopped police car, according to police.

Donovan was arrested in the early hours of July 12 after failing field sobriety tests, police said. The actor refused a Breathalyzer test, according to the police report.

The arresting officer was stopped at a red light when he "heard a loud tire screech" and observed Donovan's vehicle swerving to the left to avoid striking the rear of the police cruiser, the report said. When the officer approached Donovan, the actor said, "Sorry, I didn't see the red light or your stopped car," according to the report.

The report said Donovan told police he had three drinks and said while being transported to the Miami Beach Police Department, "I really think I'm only borderline and not too drunk... The only mistake I made tonight was drinking Benadryl with 3 glasses of wine."

Donovan was booked at the Miami-Dade County Jail and released at 9:42 a.m. on $1,000 bond, according to an employee at the facility. A rep for the actor didn't immediately respond to TVGuide.com's request for comment.
